Evolution Line Spotlight: Sunkern & Sunflora (191-192)

Would you look at that, it’s our first evolution line spotlight with consistently good ranks! It’s a little surprising, honestly, given how these two pokémon are so different when it comes to their care. Sunkerns are pretty sedentary: they’re one of those cases where, sure, they’d be easy to keep happy and healthy, but they’re much more of a houseplant than a pet. They’re absurdly easy to care for, since all they need is sunshine and water (like I said, much more of a house plant) and they hardly move around if those things are easy to get to. Sunfloras, on the other hand, are hyper-active so long as they have sunshine. They’re a pokémon that you’re only going to want to adopt if you have plenty of space for them to move around in. That being said, they’re not that much more difficult to take care of!

That being said, I will warn any sunkern owners out there to be aware of this contrast. If or when your little buddy evolves, their lifestyle will go through a pretty significant shift. While a sunkern, for example, could be totally content getting their sunshine on the tiny balcony of an apartment, a sunflora might go a little stir-crazy without a yard. Thankfully, sunkerns only evolve into sunfloras if exposed to a Sun Stone, something that should theoretically be under your control. I will point out, however, that the pokédex describes sunkerns’ sedentary lifestyle as being a part of conserving/building energy and nutrients for evolution: a sunkern may be unhappy if it is prevented from evolving indefinitely. This all really depends on your individual sunkern, but you should really keep it in mind.

In both sunkerns’ and sunfloras’ individual posts [linked at the bottom of this one], I pointed out that neither is exceptionally dangerous to humans. Sunfloras have some moves with pretty high power stats, which affected their score, but the moves themselves are far from lethal. In the sunkern post, I expressed confusion about a sharp contrast between their move set and pokédex entries: they are said to be completely helpless when being picked on by predators, yet, like their evolution, they boast a pretty impressive punch. In the comments, @kitkatkk2 and @athena-is-trans-soda pointed out that there isn’t really a contradiction there at all: sunkerns have pathetically bad stats when it comes to battle. I usually don’t look into stats too much, because I don’t want to overcomplicate my ranking algorithm (thankfully it didn’t turn out to be too much of an issue since sunkern still ended up with an A), but I learned from it to investigate these contradictions by delving deeper into game mechanics.

Personally, I probably wouldn’t adopt a sunkern or a sunflora as a pet. I think sunfloras in particular are really cute, and I think that their relative ease of care is nice. I also bet they smell really nice. But, that all being said, I prefer pets that are more cuddly and social. My read on sunfloras is that they’re mostly focused on seeking out sunshine to survive (the houseplant in them). I like active pets, but I think sunfloras are a bit too much of a one-track mind for my taste.

DAN HIBIKI from STREET FIGHTER

JUSTIFICATION:

"Although I personally headcanon them as nondysphoric genderfree (as in lacking gender in a fluid, free, whimsical way) I can see so many cases for Dan to be a trans woman or transfeminine nonbinary it's not even funny. To start off, although their appearance is heavily based off the very masculine Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia (albeit chubbier than the two), their personality is based off the very much a tomboyish with a girly streak girl Yuri Sakazaki. In addition, starting from IV onward, they say lines that very much imply they lean in a transfeminine direction, albeit without changing their pronouns like an onee character (those characters are typically transfeminine or transfeminine coded) would. For instance, in one of their winquotes to C. Viper, at least in English, they say "you're a businesswoman? That's what I do too!" Implying they at least partially see themselves as a woman. Street Fighter V takes this even further with lines in the shop quotes (they run the in game shop) implying they have worn schoolgirl skirts, implying they want to wear a bikini, and even saying "You know who would look hot as a woman? If you guessed me, give yourself ten points!" in reference to the Demitri costume Ed has as DLC. The Japanese version of this quote takes it a step further with them calling themself a "number one bijin" in reference to the costume, with bijin being a gender neutral leaning feminine term for beautiful person. Meowscarada Facts

-The scientific name for Meowscarada is "Concelo magus" which roughly translates to "Masked magician"

-Meowscarada use the pollen bombs they make for hunting. Their main prey consists of flabébé, smoliv, pawmi, hoppip, sunkern, and petilil

-Meowscarada are very popular for Mardi Gras celebrations due to their showmanship and masked-like appearance

-It's a common misconception that meowscarada "masks" can be removed. But the "masks" are actually apart of their bodies (seen with them closing with their eyes when they blink or sleep)

-The cape on their back evolved to look like leaves, so they can hide can blend in with trees

-Meowscarada can run up to 40 mph

-Meowscaradas will gently headbutt their trainers to show affection

-They enjoy sunny days and rainy days, as both can give them energy

-Meowscarada emits a scent from their cape and flower that smells like grass after rain, which can lure prey in. But they can also change the scent to be fowl, when they want to keep someone away.

-Meowscarada are closely related to the Liepard and Delcatty line, but are also considered to be in their own genus

-The entire meowscarada line is attracted to shiny things. They'll often collect random coins they find, and show them off to their trainers. Sometimes, they'll collect gimighoul on accident

-Despite bug types being their weakness, meowscarada hunt a lot of bug types

-Wild Meowscarada aren't actively hostile torwards humans, and only attacked if provoked. But they do play Pranks on humans, as well as scary tricks. The best course of action is to laugh it off, as it's just their way of entertainment

Honestly, I think Sunkern is Fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing really bad, either. The idea of a little seed with a sprout coming out of it is cute, and the design pops quite a bit due to the brown stripes, which resemble the stripes of sunflower seeds.

If I have any problem with it, it's that I always found the eyes a little disconcerting. Something about the size of the black outsides and the position of the highlights always made it seem kind of dead-eyed to me, despite the rest of the design being pretty cute. Everything else, however, is Fine.

I'm not as big on Sunflora. It's not bad, it's just that it's fairly generic; if you think "flower with a face", this is probably the first thing that comes to mind. It's ironic, as the Spaceworld beta indictes Sunflora was made first, despite being the weaker of the two designs.

The one thing I do like about it is how cheerful it is. It's so happy and plesant to look at! Even its PMD dialogue is pretty fun:

I also like that it's fairly plant-like in shape, despite technically being humanoid.

However, like I said, it's still too plain to really stand out amongst all of the other more interesting humanoid grass-types. The only unique thing about the design is the lines on the face, which are maybe meant to resemble Sunkern's stripes (which, side note, I wish it kept the dark brown from Sunkern somewhere. Maybe on the back petals or something).

Combine that with it being one of the weakest Pokemon in the game, and I think this line is majorly overdue for an update. An evolution wouldn't work because Sunflora already evolves via stone, but I could see a regional doing something interesting; maybe something fairy-type, to reflect the beliefs that sunflowers ward off evil and disease.

Anyway, overall: this line is okay. Sunkern is fairly cute, but Sunflora is more generic. Neither are really bad, but both are badly overdue for a refresh or variant of some kind. Hopefully they'll get some love in the future.

fakemon concept of a regional evolution for the sunkern line. i’m not sure whether its an alternative to sunflora or evolves from sunflora once certain conditions are met. either way it’s double the size of sunflora

based on mutant flowers and the sunflowers planted at sites of nuclear meltdowns to help purify the soil. tentative typing is grass/fire, and abilities like poison heal, leaf guard, and natural cure

Despite not using Sunflora in his battles, Brassius adores the line. He babies Sunkern endlessly, making sure to pot them when they need it. Most of the Sunflora in the Gym Test have been reared by him.

Hassel admires his commitment to caring for the line. Any resemblance he might have in his beloved Brassius’ mind to the flower Pokémon are lost on him though

Gender identity: Bigender, epicene (my interpretation based off anon's explanation)

Why would transition save them?: "i wrote an actual essay on this so basic premise: oscar is biologically female, but her father just. pronounces her a boy at birth so he can raise her as a soldier. everyone still knows she's biologically female and she still uses she/her pronouns, but she's brought up socially male. so like. inherently we've got some gender. she canonically doesn't want to be seen solely as a man though. like iirc she doesn't like being mistaken for a man. there's one scene where she wears a dress just so she can interact w a character who Does see her solely as male in a setting where he'll view her as female. …but she also doesn't want to be seen solely as female!! she's very uncomfortable with a character who emphasizes that he sees her solely as a woman!!!! Obviously part of this has to do w just the social restrictions on women and all of that esp since she's in pre- and actively Revolutionary France, but like. she has one line that translates to "I am not a man… I am not a woman…" like. How much more explicitly genderqueer can you get. There are numerous other times throughout the manga where oscar thinks of herself as not being male, or not being female, AND ALSO there are numerous lines where she DOES think of herself as one or the other. she literally explicitly exists outside the gender binary and is both male & female (but also neither exclusively). if she had known the word bigender it literally would have saved her sm grief"--anon

There's been lots of Pokemon crossover lately. Project Voltage being one of the most well-known ones, using the Vocaloid/Japanese voice synthesizer "Hatsune Miku". So I'm planning to remake my gijinka thing again.

Behold, Beautifly Yumi for my Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Gijinka AU! The plot is heavily based from Explorers of Sky's story, but with a few subplots involving various Pokemon (Jirachi recruiting, Wurmple rescue, Suicune search mission, Mewtwo's challenge, etc).

The roles so far:

Skitty: Aelita (Player character/Hero), later evolves into Delcatty, but much later than Riolu/Ulrich

Riolu: Ulrich (Partner), later evolves into Lucario after the Darkrai fight

Beautifly: Yumi (Recruited at Mt. Horn), she was recruited during a monster house mission.

Glameow: Odd (Recruited at Crystal Crossing), this is the only gijinka I didn't plan to evolve bc I had a bit trouble designing Purugly

Jeremy is planned to be a Jolteon and William is planned to be either Houndour or Nidorino.

The ones that are gijinka are the main 6 CL Characters and the Future Pokemon/time travelling trio (Dusknoir, Grovyle, Celebi). I'm not sure about Sissi's gang being the PMD's team skull, but let's see

The moveset is the latest moveset, NOT the one after recruiting. She only learned Absorb, Gust and Stun spore after joining the team at first.

scarf thing is a Vivid Silk, which is an item exclusive to the Wurmple line (in the games it's just written "Beautifly exclusive item) that absorbs rock-type moves as HP, so it's pretty neat.

There are some items like that on the PMD2/Explorers games, but they depend on the Pokemon on your party, and it's usually for a certain evolutionary line. Vivid Silk is for the Wurmple evolution Line, Sun Scarf for Sunkern line (Sun Scarf negates Fire-type moves into HP), etc.

Her fans are used for Silver wind and Aerial ace, her wings are used for gust.

Beautifly Yumi's absorb/mega drain/giga drain is just like Dusknoir's thing here lmao
