so, a few caveats before i start off — one, i actually haven't played many other pbta games (like for example i know Of thirsty sword lesbians + own a copy that i've poked around in but im not very familiar w it), so i honestly can't provide much in the way of comparing/contrasting it w other pbta stuff in the same vein, and my impressions of sapphicworld are pretty much just contained to the game as its own thing, not so much sapphicworld as a Type Of Game

and two, while i am a dev myself, i'm a huge novice! like, i'm proud of the stuff i put out and i love doing it, but i personally feel like my lack of experience is such that like, i don't think my opinions in this case are particularly informed by my own work as a dev or anything. all this to say im happy to answer this question, i think i just gotta tackle it from a different frame than what ur specifically asking!

BUT ANYWAY. i can still talk abt why im so excited abt sapphicworld in a way that has kind of outstripped other stuff in general, and for me it's about the world 100%. like i honestly spend close to no time thinking abt the fact that sw is even pbta to be honest. not that the mechanics + gameplay aren't important, bc they are thoughtfully crafted and well done and fun, and i'm saying that from the perspective of someone who playtested earlier versions that have now been reworked! it's just like, not what comes to mind first for me — what's exciting and fresh and irreplaceable abt the game in my mind is like. it is fully committed to immersing you in an extremely lush, strange, richly fleshed out world, one with a long history and folklore/mythology and a TON of really fun npcs who all have different subcultures and its own calendar with seasonal holidays and regional terrain with specific fleshed out dungeons/towns/etc to discover and even like, specific FOODS typical to each different region and and and and —

and maybe at first that seems kind of overwhelming, and tbh it is. when i first got into it and i was going thru the playtest document (which if im remembering right was like. ~300 pages shorter at the time than the current playtest doc) i DO remember anxiously thinking to myself "god this is a LOT and idk if i'll be able to retain enough of this to rp convincingly" etc etc. but like... it's just really compelling, and it does an incredible job of mixing humor and gravity and horniness in a perfect ratio that always comes across as intensely earnest and makes it equally easy to have a fun goofy time or a really emotional time, which i think is REALLY hard to do.

and while normally it's hard for me to get thru something that dense and long all i can really say is that i just straight up like it enough and was charmed by it enough to pick away at it until i grasped it and felt like i understood a bunch about the world, which also has a curve to it bc in structure and tone its very different from any of your... idk more Standard fantasy or sci fi worldbuilding, so it's not like u can immediately slot in ur expectations from other settings and just learn some new vocab words, it's a world that from my perspective also Functions differently than a lot of other fictional settings in a way that's a little hard to describe succinctly. (none of this is succinct to begin with but ykwim). it makes me want to gm my own campaign, really really bad, when usually i have always been absolutely Terrified of the idea of gming! idk man. it has a Flavor. it's full of Vapors. u get transported somewhere else reading it and playing it in a way i haven't experienced in a while and a lot of times after a playtest session i felt like my brain stayed behind in sapphicworld for a pretty long time.

i feel like i am sounding a little melodramatic and incoherent but like. genuinely sapphicworld is just a fictional world that i am really bone-deep charmed by and interested in and when i WAS reading thru the rulebook for those first days it did not take me long at all to find myself constantly thinking "i want to play in this world, i want to play in this world, i can't wait to play in this world," and i just think that's really special. and like — just as your curiosity abt comparing sw to tsl was not intended as a diss or a negative, what im abt to say is similarly neutral — im a person who sometimes finds it a little difficult to click with or feel excited abt a lot of the Queer Indie Stuff that i see get popular with other people, bc it just doesn't connect w my specific lesbian + trans experience; not that it feels inauthentic but that im like, oh, idk, i think these guys are just. not My Zone, ykwim. on the flip side so much of the humor and heart and transness and sex in sapphicworld is something that really resonates w me and just Clicks in a way that i have also found really special.

rounding myself off before i ramble for like five more paragraphs but just as one more morsel of something i like abt sapphicworld that is a little more concrete than me spinning around the room yelling "I JUST LIKE IT OKAY": one of the most fun parts of character creation is getting to mix and match your kind (sort of like ancestry/species, the form ur physical body takes) with a subculture. so u get things like a werewolf babe (cookie! babe being a subculture that focuses on being Like, Totally Hot), or a centaur knight, or a minotaur debaucher, or a vampire cowboy, or an organist (cthulu-y tentacle guy) scenester, or a skeleton wizard, etc etc etc etc — there are SO MANY to pick from that when i was trying to bait my friends into playing w me i couldn't find a convenient way to list them all so ppl could start thinking abt their characters. and every possible combination basically is interesting and amusing and fun and practically THROWS a great oc into your lap and i literally think i could amuse myself endlessly just Making Characters in sapphicworld and never actually playing w them.

[panting, disheveled] so tldr. i like it. uh. what sets sapphicworld apart from other ttrpgs to me is that i have fallen balls to the wall in love with the very soul of it to the point where i don't even really think about it in comparison to other games at all and it has just become an Experience to me and i suppose i cannot guarantee anyone else will fall into insane homosexual hysteria in the same way but here we are. HOPE THAT HELPS

2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom

Lucien loves pet names. Some of the sweeter ones are reserved for the people she cherishes. For the most part, “doll” or “love” are usually attached to the ends of her sentences.

Lucien made her start at The Pearl doing drag performances—it’s actually where her stage name comes from. She still does drag a few nights a week, although she’s changed her drag persona a lot in the last decade.

Lucien owns a bit of The Pearl. A deal was written up between her and the current owner sometime during their fleeting romantic relationship. Only recently did they realize Lucien conned them into it.

Lucien hasn’t belonged to a vampire clan for a long time. Most of her allegiances align with The Pearl and the city’s forgotten souls that find their way there. She does miss the deep connection that comes with being a part of a clan.

The necklace she wears with the sword pendant belonged to friend that was turned with her way back when. Unfortunately, he was killed when they were still fledglings, so she wears his necklace to remember him.

She has a secret interest in cooking, despite not needing to eat in the same way humans do. She’s absolutely terrible at it. But it’s fun, even romantic.

You can't even bribe Lucien to sleep in a coffin. Nothing compares to her plush mattress and goose down pillows. No way in hell is she putting on her sexy chemise just to tuck into a wooden box.

also thank you for letting us include Martina's friends in our character bios!! I love to think she adores Dove like she would a sibling. She may say she doesn't like them, but she's given them an affectionate nickname anyway. I feel like they would have a love-hate relationship that's solely based on being petty, but they have each other's back when it comes to it.

i do think its a feminist issue in that i think women, and people socialized as women, are so systematically cut off from their desire and anatomy (my mom didnt know u dont pee out of the same hole until i told her….when she was like 45….) that we don’t want to and don’t know how to write sex focused on vaginas. even in leftist circles and sapphic circles it’s easy to project onto cis men tangentially, because if you have to write about pussies you have to think about what feels good, what’s sexy, and that runs into this wall that you put up so you don’t HAVE to think about these things. i am pushing through these walls primarily for mine and my partner’s enjoyment, and publishing it bc other people should get to enjoy it, too, although there are still some things i write that really are too personal, i.e., pretty much directly lifted from real life experience, but that falls into a different category of erotica than, say, writing lesbians having weird sex with swords because it’s fun for those characters and why would i write it as cis men if i could just not? we alll love calling cis men butch icons or whatever; why not actually DO that? anyway, women like humping and women like sucking and women like sweat and body hair too and i’m gonna write about it.

on a side note it is very unfortunate that english lacks sexy words for female anatomy. we literally don’t have a good word for wetness. it makes writing it very difficult from a technical standpoint which means i also get more burnt out. i’m taking a few days off and then i’ll be back to my zolusbian fucking nasty duties.

Abt the drawing itself I was trying to achieve the sense of like. All the different aspects of float that make her float and just. Everything that leads itself to it’s own inevitable conclusion, but things don’t get to end for her once she’s dead and now she is an outsider to herself. Looking into a life that she was designed to feel and remember as if they were her own. Such a cruel joke on Clarity’s part just to make the lie authentic! she is a walking ghost now!! The panel of her cyborg body just below the memory of her first real instance of identity, the clothes she was given through the kindness of a stranger, a new name and appearance and a chance to invent herself.. but knowing what comes of Flint bringing her into his past in an attempt to protect her :( sad and ironic 

The scene she was crying after facing flint I don’t think of only as her attempt to authenticate the lie she is feeding Spark, but more so that. Picture you just faced someone you’re supposed know as your best friend, someone you never even got to say goodbye to, and you also know that you only exist to lie about your intentions and achieve someone else’s goal I think in that situation I’d be upset as hell, no separating your objective from your feelings there.

& for general headcanons. Like you said she is THE schizophrenic girl of all time to me. (Spark too but that’s a post in itself) First time I got through the game it was like. Oh there is some kind of depersonalization theme here. Character who has never truly known her own self, her cyborg body a reminder of what was discarded, and even when she’s back in her original body it’s a form she has no memory of! It is still unfamiliar and detached from her.

what are your spiciest things to add to RPG encounters to mix things up? u seem like you've got a great handle on creating max chaos in ur combats

depends on the system and how the combat works, because obvi what makes satisfying combat encounter between, say, D&D 5e and Thirsty Sword Lesbians and Mythras and Blades in the Dark is different.

but broadly speaking I find that it's a lot more fun to multiple enemies with varying skills and danger levels rather than one super big enemy, because that requires your players to split their attention and get creative in how they prioritize who to take out first. it's also WAY more interesting to have lot of different kinds of enemies on the board than a bunch of the same guy over and over again, and on a practical level that's useful for helping differentiate between enemies and keeping combat straight when players are trying to figure out what to do with their turn.

if you do this it also helps to build up enemies individually rather than just use premade enemy statblocks, because that will flesh out the characters more for you and give you a chance to get a sense of who they are and how they'll act when confronting the players. NPCs with personality are vital to getting players invested in the world and the stakes of their encounters, and that's true for enemies as well! what's motivating them? what would make them give up and run from the fight? can they be bought? why should the party actually want to fight them?

I can't speak for everyone's players of course, but the folks I generally play with aren't murder hobos. so if, say, some bandits stop them on the road, they're way more likely to try and talk their way out of the situation than engage in a fight. like, they don't know these guys. what's the motivation? but if, say, the party has gotten really attached to a particular NPC and that NPC's mom is obviously controlling and awful to her kid, then boom bang - you've got someone that the players are ready to fight at the drop of a hat!

haiiiiii hm well to say i don't would be a lie but truly i am very mainstream with the danmei i read so i doubt you haven't read them before

all of mxtx's stuff is really good and worth a try but tgcf is always going to be my favorite. there's a new revised version out by now i am pretty sure which is all the more reason to check it out. the plot beats are clever, xie lian is one of the most compelling main characters ever written, but i think the worldbuilding is what makes it so good. you can tell it was crafted very lovingly and the cultural aspects make it twice as interesting! hua cheng is also very jean-coded to me

i think mdzs needs no introduction but if you're into more somber stories it will definitely please you, the political intrigue is well written and all character dynamics are very compelling. i reread mdzs every few months and i always come out of it obsessed with a new character so i feel like, if you're coming from aftg, it will be the smoothest transition. that being said wangxian are VERY into cnc and i know it can be an issue for some people so i would suggest avoiding the extra if it's a total turn off for you. if it's no issue, i'd also say that if you read mdzs and end up not liking jin ling you will no longer be welcome in my page

qiang jin jiu/ballad of sword and wine is one of my favorites but it is VERY extensive and it goes really deeply into politics, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. the main characters are truly nasty to each other at first but their relationship develops into one of my favorite dynamics i've ever read, and their scenes together are pretty sweet and intimate. this novel also has a canonical lesbian couple in the bg, though i am pretty sure you only get more information on that in the extras, which is always nice :) again i am repeating that this one is famously heavy on the politics so be aware of that! also some pretty graphic scenes of gore torture and abuse

2ha/dumb husky and his white cat shizun is good but i will say that meatbun's specialty is not plot and you can tell. if you're reading 2ha you're most likely reading it for the character dynamics and the worldbuilding, which are always amazing, but the plot is convoluted and in desperate need of some heavier editing. yuwu/remnants of filth suffers from a similar fate but has the essential flaw of not having chu wanning in it so i don't recommend it as much, BUT there are two characters who are kevriko in another world for sure

i think that is all? i picked up stars of chaos recently for the milfisms and i do plan to finish it eventually but i can't say for sure if it's good yet
