When Tails alerted him of a new Eggman base, Sonic accepted the offer with glee, figuring it’d be like every other time. He’d go in, kick some butt, trash the place, and claim another win. Easy!

But of course, things had to get more complicated than they should be. And not the good, exciting complicated this time.

Oh, no.

The base itself had been exactly as always. A different layout, maybe, as if that’d throw him off. Fresh materials signaled that it was newly constructed, not a single scratch on pristine walls. He changed that pretty quick.

Badniks, booby traps, the usual. He tore through all of them, reinforced steel giving in to his spin dash with satisfying crunches that left him grinning. You’d think that Eggman would learn something from losing this many times, but apparently not. 

Blowing a raspberry at the nearest security camera before taking it out of commission, something bright red caught his eye. A gaudy “Do Not Enter” sign handily showing him the entrance to the control center. Heh, this was too easy.

It wasn’t until he blew a hole in it, the poor badnik that he kicked through tumbling across the room, that his world came crashing down.

“Metal!” Sonic exclaimed at the sight of his robotic copy, a bit too much cheer in his voice. “I didn’t expect you to be here! Should make things… more…”

He didn’t usually pay attention to screens. Info grabbing wasn’t his job, nor was it a goal today. But this took up the entire wall, the glow backlighting his enemy standing before it, no visible reaction to his dramatic entrance. 

It was hard to ignore the file, labeled clearly with PROJECT: METAL SONIC.

It was even harder to ignore the profile of a young hedgehog, her bright smile hauntingly familiar.

“...Tania?”

No more than a whisper, but Metal turns around. 

As much as Sonic would like to say that something magical happened right then, the only thing remotely close was the chaos energy that blazed in the robot’s core booster as they lunged, ferocity rivaling that of Shadow on a bad day. If he’d ducked a millisecond later, Sonic was sure his head would be rolling on the floor.

Inertia carried Metal through the ragged hole in the wall, giving the hero a brief reprieve to prepare himself before the badnik came at him full force, claws extended like knives.

“Wait, wait!” Sonic caught the charge with both hands, his fingers interlocking with Metal’s. His arms would be thanking him for that later, he winced, gritting his teeth to the jolt of pain as he pushed back. At least he didn’t dislocate one.

He opened his mouth to say something, not that he knew what to say. Cold, sharp steel punctured the backs of his hands as Metal tightened their grip, the heat flaring from their booster causing beads of sweat to dot Sonic’s face. 

They showed no sign of stopping. If anything, they increased power, brute force easing the deadlock in their favor. If those digital red eyes could show any emotion at all, Sonic was sure it’d be pure hate. 

None of the little sister he’d been looking for.

Forced back, the smooth floor offered no purchase to his skidding shoes. As he hit the adjacent wall, the Metal’s sheer force allowed him to get up horizontally and propel himself forward using his legs, twisting their positions to hopefully gain an upper hand. 

Sonic didn’t predict the way Metal grabbed his wrists, using what was supposed to help the former to their own advantage. The big screen flickered as they flung the surprised hedgehog into it, an ugly crack splattering where he landed quills first.

“Met—gUH!” he wheezed, cut off as said robot grabbed him by the neck, what air was left in him forced out in a strangled squeak. “Mmph—! L-listen…” Sonic tried, attempting in vain to pry Metal’s hands off him and they squeezed, an uncomfortable amount of pressure crushing his trachea and decorating his vision with spots of color. “...please!”

“METAL SONIC! WHAT IS THIS?!” a voice that was undeniably Eggman’s echoed from somewhere in the building. “I TOLD YOU TO PROTECT THE BASE! WHAT WERE YOU DOING?!”

Metal, of course, having no voice box, couldn’t respond. But it served as enough of a distraction for them to loosen their hold, giving Sonic just what he needed to wrench himself out of their grasp, a swift kick to the booster sending them flying into the opposite wall.

Oxygen rushing to his brain brought both relief and nausea as the hedgehog crumpled to the floor, gasping for breath. Eggman was back, and clearly unhappy. He was out of time. 

Sonic shakily stood up, throwing a glance back as red eyes pierced him from across the room. Metal’s file was still open, a large crack in the glass cutting right through the face of Tania. 

It seemed… creepily symbolic. He felt something lodge in his throat, although that might be because Metal had a death grip on it five seconds ago. There was no time to dwell on it. He committed that marred image to memory as he smashed through the control panel, an error message flashing on the screen for a split second before it went dark. 

A louder “METAL?” told of Eggman’s approach as the badnik turned toward the sound before looking back, energy flickering in their core as they prepared for another attack. But their opponent was already gone, a fading blue trail the only sign that he was ever there.

Sonic popped out a vent and crawled onto the grass with a stuttered sigh, the sky a welcome sight. As much as he liked to mess with Eggman… not today.

“Tania,” he whispers, no one but the wind to hear him. The clouds above him seemed to morph into her face the longer he looked.

“I’ll be back. I promise.”

Shuu Sakamaki 💛

Angelica is one of the few people who can have Shuu do things without much effort.

Due to Angelica still being Karlheinz's wife in the present day, she is the one to receive calls for when a new sacrificial bride is being sent to the mansion. When she does receive a call, Angelica makes sure to tell Shuu about it and tells him to inform his brothers and sister that they're getting a new guest. Whether Shuu remembers to do it or not is out of her control.

The only room that Shuu doesn't sleep in is Angelica's room. While he has done it in the past as a young boy, the blonde haired vampire doesn't want to invade his stepmom's privacy.

When Angelica gave birth to his little sister Sofia, Shuu would help her with the baby whenever he saw that his stepmom was getting tired. One of the reasons why is because Karlheinz was busy with his duties as the Vampire King and as "Tougo Sakamaki" in the human realm.

He prefers her cooking over the cooks of the house. He claims that she's the only one who can make his favorite food, rare steak, "just right".

When Shuu bought the music room at Ryoutei Academy, Angelica had helped him with the purchase: she also reminded him to make sure that it didn't distract him from his studies.

Whenever Angelica gets tickets for an opera through Karlheinz, Shuu is always the one to go to the opera with her and Sofia, especially when Karlheinz can't go if he gets too busy with his job.

Angelica tries to get Shuu to stop bathing with his clothes on as it causes a hassle for her and the servants who wash them when he's done.

He likes to watch some of the movies that Angelica stars in if she has a music role, as he's a fan of her singing.

When at school, Shuu gets asked questions from his fellow classmates if the famous actress and singer "Angelica Amor" is actually his mother, he often tells them she's his stepmother as they bring up that they don't look alike and if it's easier for him to get the conversation over with. But if they ask him if he can get them her autograph, Shuu typically ignores them and walks away.

Shuu especially doesn't like it when he hears some of his male classmates talking about Angelica from her more "risqué" movie roles. However, out of all the brothers, except maybe Reiji, Shuu is the best at ignoring them.

He enjoys whenever they can play music together.

Reiji is probably the second most devoted to Angelica as a son, the first being Subaru.

Unlike the rest of his brothers, Reiji isn't as protective of Angelica since she's a grown woman and is capable of taking care of herself: it also helps that his father Karlheinz always has bodyguards with Angelica whenever she's out in public.

He still likes to help Angelica with cooking.

As he got older, Reiji's ideal woman would become similar to both Beatrix and Angelica: his "perfect" woman would have Beatrix's grace and elegance with Angelica's warmth and empathy.

He helps her with keeping Akira's shrine and grave as unblemished as possible.

Reiji doesn't call Angelica 'mom', or even 'mother', like the rest of his siblings do, he refers her as either 'Ms Angelica' or 'Mother Angelica' in private.

He still feels guilty for what he did to Edgar's old village and for causing Angelica to receive burn scars on her back when she, Akira, and Shuu tried to save the human boy in the past.

However, if Reiji had to critique Angelica on ANYTHING, it would probably have to be how she 'babies' Shuu.

Reiji always makes sure that Angelica gets a proper amount of alone time when he senses that she's overworked, and she does the same in return.

When he is at school and overhears some of his male classmates talking about Angelica in one of her 'suggestive' roles in movies and tv shows she stars in. Reiji labels them as 'degenerates' in his head and if they have an encounter face to face, he tells them to not talk about his mother in that way in front or anywhere near him as politely as he can. Reiji is usually good at ignoring his classmates when these things happen.

Reiji still tries to find ways to impress Angelica, like he used to do with his birth mother Beatrix.

Ayato is the one who has the more 'casual' mother-son relationship with Angelica between him and his brothers, other than Subaru of course.

He casually calls her 'mom', 'ma' without fear of consequence.

Even though Ayato is still a bit of a prankster, he does try to be on his best behavior for Angelica.

He prefers her cooking over the other cooks in the mansion.

Ever since Angelica started acting, Ayato has often asked her to bring him a souvenir from whatever project she's on. He likes to show them off to his friends at school.

Angelica usually fixes Ayato's uniform before he goes to school, but he always makes it go back to his usual style.

Due to Ayato hating his eyes (because they remind him of Cordelia), he has thought about buying colored contacts that'd make them appear silver so he could match with Angelica.

Angelica is the one to have helped Ayato with removing the spikes from his Iron Maiden device so he could start using it as a bed.

Ayato does get a little defensive when his classmates ask him how he's related to Angelica, as the two of them don't look anything alike. He usually tells them that it's 'none of their business' and walks away.

When Angelica has free time, Ayato always asks her to watch horror movies with him, though they both have to make sure that Sofia isn't around.

However, like most parents with their kids, Angelica and Ayato do get into arguments, though it's not often. If Ayato is the one in the wrong, it typically takes him a day to apologize while Angelica tries to apologize as fast as she can.

Like the rest of his brothers, Ayato gets livid if he hears about the boys at his school talking about Angelica as if she was some kind of sex object. However, he is one of the few to take action. . . .which is just him pranking them by either leaving glitter bombs in their lockers, signing them up for mailing lists, or even by going to their home and making them think they're going to die by dressing up as a masked intruder (I genuinely don't know if these are the kind of pranks Ayato does in the games, so I'm sorry if they're inaccurate).

He has thought about signing Angelica up for dating apps since he thinks his father Karlheinz isn't good enough for her, though he doesn't go through with it since he is scared of his father finding out.

Kanato Sakamaki 💜

Kanato's familial love for Angelica has grown to be quite intense as he grew up to be a young man. To this day, Kanato still calls her "Mama Angie" and seeks her out whenever he craves attention.

He is easily the most clingy out of all the brothers.

Whenever Angelica is out shooting for a movie or tv show, Kanato often goes into her room and sleeps in her bed for comfort.

Kanato has had moments where he's thought about dyeing his hair pink so he could match with Angelica, but he changes his mind almost immediately, as he still has some love for his birth mother Cordelia and, therefore, still takes some pride with the fact that he looks like her.

He has a rather large DVD collection of movies and tv shows that Angelica has starred in that he keeps in his room. However, none of them are the 'saucy' films that she's starred in on occasion.

Kanato still "takes care" of Angelica's unwanted suitors, and he takes the most delight in "dealing" with those who are more persistent. He doesn't make them into his special 'wax figures' though, as he believes that they aren't worthy.

Like with his mother Cordelia, Kanato has a portrait of Angelica in his room, though they are not kept together.

Angelica, other than Sofia, is the only person Kanato is willing to share his sweets with and to allow to hold/talk to Teddy.

Angelica often has to get creative with getting Kanato to eat fiber.

Kanato always makes sure that Angelica is included in whatever text chain he is in.

He loves to play with her hair and put it in any pretty styles he saw in a book or online.

When it comes to his classmates at school and their 'perversion' towards Angelica due to her being a popular actress, Kanato makes sure to deal with them with his own 'methods'. Two of them even ended up at the hospital after 'falling down' a flight or stairs at school or getting into a freak accident where most of their skin was horrifically burned.

He gets instantly jealous if anyone tries to 'steal' Angelica away from him and Teddy.

Laito Sakamaki 💚

Laito has felt that Angelica was the true motherly figure he, Ayato, and Kanato needed since Cordelia didn't truly care for them.

He still enjoys to play the piano with her, and even helps her with writing new songs before a concert.

Laito likes to go shopping with Angelica when they are both free from their duties: him with school and her with acting and singing.

When Laito has girls from school over, he makes sure that Angelica isn't around.

The only person Laito is comfortable talking about what happened to him during his childhood is Angelica.

He likes to wear some of the clothes and jewelry Angelica gets to take home from her movie and TV show roles.

Whenever Angelica is at the store, she always makes sure to bring home a crossword puzzle for Laito.

Due to Laito's fear of bugs and insects, he always asks Angelica if she can take care of them for him. And if she's not around, he goes to his little sister Sofia.

Laito has a few friends of his own that he hangs out with at school, and while they talk about the kind of women they like and what not, Laito absolutely hates it when they bring up Angelica from whatever movie role she has at the moment. He likes his friends, he really does, but it's upsetting to him that they see the woman who loved him like her own child as some kind of sex symbol. When he gives them a certain "look" to stop talking, they listen.

Laito tried to make Angelica a cake for her birthday once, but he forgot to add the baking soda before he baked it. Angelica, however, still thought the gesture was sweet.

Subaru Sakamaki 🤍

Naturally, out of all the brothers, Subaru is the closest with Angelica due to her raising him ever since he was a baby.

Subaru is easily the most protective (without going into a murderous rage) over the pink haired woman.

He calls her 'mom' and 'ma', much like Ayato.

Like all of his brothers (except maybe Reiji), Subaru thinks that Karlheinz isn't good enough to be Angelica's husband, but it may be more personal for him due to what happened to his birth mother Christa.

One time, Subaru was getting rid of trash from his closet when he found an old crayon drawing he did as a child: the drawing depicted a six-year old Subaru with Angelica, Christa, and a then living Akira living in a cottage in the woods as a family. Subaru thought about throwing it away, but he ultimately kept it, though he made sure to keep it hidden.

Subaru always makes sure to give Angelica a bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day or for her birthday. They are typically a bouquet of red carnations, as they are considered a sweet symbol of love.

Despite Angelica being the mom, Subaru makes sure to track her location on his phone if she goes anywhere with Karlheinz, basically treating the two grown adults as if they were teenagers going on a date.

Even though Subaru doesn't normally eat human food, he does like to eat some of Angelica's cooking.

Due to his status as a loner at school, Subaru often hears the boys at his school talking about Angelica in movies and tv shows she's starred in, though it's not like he does it on purpose: they' just talk that loud. And when they talk about her like an object, he gets livid. He absolutely does NOT like it when he hears conversations like those. One time, he even got into a fight with a few of them and broke either their arms, legs, or noses.

Like with Christa, Subaru is willing to kill for Angelica.

Kino Sakamaki 🤎

Kino was believed to be an "illegitimate" son of Karlheinz and a past mistress of his.

When he first appeared, the brothers, Angelica, and Sofia were shocked that Karlheinz seemingly had another son, especially one who seemed to hate vampires: given that he was half vampire himself.

When it is revealed that Kino was revealed to be some kind of experiment Karlheinz made and abandoned, Kino felt some shame that he thought he was someone that he was not. Angelica, feeling sympathetic and some pity for the young man, decided to take him in and officially adopt Kino as her son, like she did with the other boys. This was meet with some complaints, obviously, from the boys.

Kino was very much surprised by this. For a while, he believed that Angelica's kindness was a facade, a trick to get him to lower his guard so she and the boys would kill him.

However, when Kino realized that Angelica was being genuine, he started to get more comfortable with being around her. It was still a little weird for him though, as he never had a mother to begin with.

Angelica had to come up with a believable story for how Kino came to be apart of the family when others asked: she and the boys would say that Kino was Tougo's (Karlheinz human persona) nephew from the countryside who was adopted by Angelica and her husband after Kino's parents died.

Kino practically scarfs down her food and would always ask for seconds when Angelica cooked dinner.

When Kino accidentally called Angelica 'mom', he got embarrassed up until Angelica told him that it was fine and that she took it as a compliment.

One day, while Angelica was cleaning Kino's room when he and the others were at school, she was shocked to see that he possessed her eldest son Akira's old telescope. When Kino returned home, Angelica did ask the dark haired young man on where he got it. After Kino asked her why, Angelica revealed that his telescope once belonged to her son, which greatly shocked Kino.

Even before he found out, Kino did suspect that Angelica and her daughter were connected to his old friend Akira, as they shared a resemblance to him and were related to Karlheinz like he was.

Sofia Sakamaki 🐰

Sofia is Angelica and Karlheinz's youngest child and only daughter.

During the first few months, Angelica felt rather sickly, though she had a feeling that this wasn't a regular sickness. She was proven right when she fainted and after getting a check up from the family doctor, learned that she was pregnant.

A few months into Angelica's pregnancy, Karlheinz's first wife Cordelia was putting small amounts of an abortion drug in her food and drinks, as she was jealous that Karlheinz was giving her more love and affection than he did with her during her pregnancy with the triplets: it also reminded her of when Angelica first got pregnant with Akira.

When this was discovered, Karlheinz had Angelica on bed rest and hired the best doctors to get her better, and the best guards to keep an eye on her until she got better.

Angelica's pregnancy with her daughter was a bit difficult for her: combined with the recent death of her eldest son Akira, Cordelia's harassment and drugging, Beatrix's death, and so on and so forth, Angelica's husband Karlheinz had her stay with him in his castle, with Shuu, Reiji, and Subaru in tow, to make her pregnancy with Sofia easier on her. The triplets weren't allowed to go as even though Angelica was their legal mother, they claimed that they were staying behind to make sure Cordelia wasn't planning anything. This led to the three of them planning to murder their birth mother as revenge for what she did to them, for her part in Akira's death, and Angelica's past torment and near death experience.

Angelica and Karlheinz never did ask for the gender of the baby when she was pregnant, as they and everyone else believed that the baby would be a boy given Karlheinz's track record at that point.

During her pregnancy, Angelica would hum lullabies from time to time as she believed that the baby could hear her. And if she wasn't in the mood to sing, Angelica would play classical music like Mozart since she heard Mozart's music made babies smarter.

When Cordelia died, the triplets were finally allowed to go to Karlheinz's castle to help with Angelica during her final trimester: as a result, Shu, Reiji, and Subaru helped her out with anything she needed while the triplets kind of became her little bodyguards.

When it was finally time for Angelica to give birth, it went well for her as not only did Karlheinz hire the best doctors he could find, but Reiji had also made a little concoction to make her labor pains lessen.

As soon as Sofia was born, Angelica made a vow to protect her and to never allow anything to happen to her, similar to Marlin with Nemo from the Pixar film Finding Nemo.

A story of two very different people learning to work with each other and themselves, and perhaps falling in love in the process.
