"Huh." It's a single, punctual sound. Clearly, while Neo thinks having different languages everywhere is strange and, probably, unnecessarily difficult, the concept of a single world-wide language is likewise a very odd concept to him.

Certainly, he could see the merits of one unified language, but...

"Must not be a very big place," he mutters, somewhat absently, because logically that just seems like the most sane explanation. He knows, at least conceptually, how and why so many different languages form. Distance and population isolation that leads to different solutions to the same problems, including what different sounds mean and the way they string together.

(And he can't see what Neo sees, so the fact that it mostly all looks the same to her by some means of magic is entirely lost to him. Things that are attributed to "magic" in his world is, obviously, almost always related to Abilities, or a lack of scientific understanding paired with imagination and a need to explain the "unexplainable".)

Slipping his phone away again, he tilts his head a little further. Not quite a question, more simply mulling over the implications of these differences of theirs.

Idly, he can't help but wonder if Remnant -- clearly, what she calls the place she comes from -- is an entire world, or just a place within it, the same as the difference between whether they're talking about Earth or a country like Japan. From what information she's given him and the promise of only one language, he has to assume that maybe Remnant is a country, part of a bigger whole and too isolated to have encountered other cultures. That would make more sense (to him, at least) than an entire planet with only one dialect.

"Anyway, I can't really say that I do. I've never really had the need for it. It's not like you find all that many people who are deaf or mute working in the crime circuit, and on the rare chance we deal with someone like that in the business side of things, they usually have an interpreter the same as negotiating with someone who speaks a foreign language, or some kind of assistive device like you use, but it wouldn't be hard to find someone who knows. Since there are different languages, there are entire schools and classes for teaching things like that, and now with the way technology has gone, these days you can find that sort of thing online without ever having to pay a thing or meet with a real person, so there's a lot of options for learning."

A different language for every place in the world? Different ways to speak the same language, even within the same country? To say that Neo looks as though she thinks that's the stupidest thing she's ever heard would be doing the incredulity on her face a disservice. But more importantly than that, means of communication for people who can't communicate. That don't force them to use a voice that will never be their own, or act as their own personal scribe all the time.

It seems unbelievable. And a little counterintuitive.

On Remnant, anything that could keep a person from detecting or reacting to a Grimm in time is as good as a death sentence. People like her normally wouldn't have survived, if they lived near outskirts or in other places in the Kingdoms where Huntsmen didn't work regularly.

Not enough people like her survived for something like that to be created.

When he shows her what's supposed to be two different languages, Neo shakes her head. At a glance, they both read the same. Neo rubs her eyes, grateful she hadn't put any of her makeup on yet, and looks again just to be sure. It happens suddenly, a flicker as she concentrates hard on the words. One of them shifts, changes to a series of lines and curls and dashes that are completely unlike anything she's used to.

When she blinks, they're both back to 'normal', but Neo realizes now, there's something up. Definitely a parting gift from the Blacksmith, given how different this place is in this regard.

I have to really be trying to see the difference, I think? Everyone in Remnant spoke the same language. No matter what Kingdom, it was all the same.

It feels strange, and she knows without even having to be told that such a thing isn't normal. Brothers, is she ever going to feel like she is? Maybe in whatever passes for her next life, she supposes.

That's a little less important to her now though, because the concept of a language without speaking is really stuck in her mind.

...is there a way I could learn? Sign language, I mean?

It should be obvious- for someone who has such difficulty communicating, the opportunity is too good to pass up. Then, with her eyes peering over the scroll's screen at him expectantly:

You know what would be hilarious? 

Constantine comes into one of those meetings as he sometimes does every blue moon. Though the proper word would be storms into a meeting and practically slams a whole stack of papers down. “Can someone bloody explain to me why the American-fucking-government is trying to go to war with the fucking Infinite Realms?!” 

The Justice League is of course alarmed and confused- and also John weren’t you in Hell?! Yeah, he was, where the fuck do you think he found out about this? 

Now if you’ll excuse him he’s going back to the House of Mysteries with his now haunted trench coat. John, John Constantine what the fuck do you mean by that? No don’t just leave, don’t leave this mess just for them- JOHN!

Random thoughts/analysis on Spock & Bones relationship inspired by The Immunity Syndrome (s2e18).

I love the dynamic of a whole trio because it is different.

With Kirk & Spock it’s an obvious affection and love. They both are open about them liking each other, and it is noticed multiple times by other characters, even by those who do not know them well.

Kirk & Bones — it is also an open and deep friendship, although probably not as deep as with Kirk & Spock. Or rather almost as deep. As Kirk says that he trusts Bones at the same level as Spock. Then come Spock & Bones.

Their relationship is ambiguous to say the least. They both have very different life views and beliefs, but actually are far more alike than they might think. At one moment they say very hurtful things to each other, next second they both argue that they can’t let the other die. McCoy says multiple times that he dislikes Spock, while mostly being the first one to start worrying about him or noticing any change in Spock’s behavior, and having him as a priority when it comes to saving his life or treating him (This Side of Paradise, Amok Time, Mirror, Mirror, Metamorphosis, etc). Because he’s an amazing doctor.

What I also have noticed is a slight jealousy from Bones, when Kirk prefers Spock. There’s an obvious competition, and it is very understandable — you’d feel the same way is someone very close to you has a preference to someone you don’t agree with on monumental issues, which results in Bones making “racist” remarks, although I don’t believe he’s racist, he just uses every opportunity to point out the difference and Spock literally does the same (“You, humans…” Spock, do you realize you’re literally a half human what do you mean “you humans”).

Also, Bones is clearly annoyed when Spock contradicts himself, always pointing out how he’s so logical, so alien and doesn’t feel or have human emotions, while obviously having it all, and literally lies to himself, denying his human half. Bones despite his shortcomings stays true to himself, Spock doesn’t. So Bones chooses to believe.

There’s a clear competition, but it feels… One sided.

Spock likes McCoy and tries to befriend him. He trusts him with even personal worries, he asks advice, and just tries to be near him (The Conscience Of The King, Obsession, A Piece of Action, Journey To Babel, etc etc) even saying openly in Amok Time that he regards McCoy as his close friend, and also mind melds with McCoy even more often then with Kirk. In the end, Spock even gives Bones his katra years later. McCoy actually does not mind it at all, but showing Spock that he actually likes him back or agrees with him, will mean for Bones to betray his core beliefs, to admit that Spock is right. Illogical, but human.

The Immunity Syndrome showcases this dynamic beautifully as well as Spock’s “rejected” feelings.

Bones is willing to sacrifice himself, but reasons it with having pure scientific goals. Spock immediately points it out, and McCoy doesn’t even try to argue this, because it is true. Still, because they both are scientists, the curiosity plays a huge if not the main role in their motivation. So, when Kirk chooses Spock, McCoy experiences conflicting emotions.

First, McCoy is more suitable candidate for the research, and lost the opportunity of a lifetime, just because Spock is physically stronger. Spock admits it, showcasing understanding towards Bones, but McCoy is still obviously hurt by this and aims his annoyance at Spock, as if he “stole” the opportunity from him, instead of blaming Kirk.

Second, Spock is going there to die, while it was Bones who was first willing to sacrifice himself. So when McCoy doesn’t let Spock to open hangar, he says bitterly “You are determined not to let me share it, aren’t you?”. But this gesture of hesitation is also suitable for the person who doesn’t want other person to die. As the last, weak, hopeless attempt to stop the unavoidable.

The way McCoy looks at him, is anger mixed with pain and worry. But he can’t share it. He’s bitter that Spock wouldn’t let him to do this instead, because he lets the other being die. While it should be him, Bones! Vulcans do not feel such emotions, they grief differently, Spock will be fine if McCoy dies, right? Right?

And then Spock makes the situation worse. He suddenly admits that he’s scared. And that he needs comfort. From McCoy. He wouldn’t even show Kirk that he’s scared. But he trusts McCoy to see his weakness.

And McCoy can’t bring himself to do this. A lot is happening there. Spock is literally being more noble then McCoy, sharing something even not every non-Vulcan would admit, and McCoy has to be faced with his own cruelty, that he was so busy with his own feelings, that he didn’t even think how Spock actually feels, choosing to believe Spock is heartless at the moment so Bones would feel right about himself. While he’s a doctor, and he’s the one with a savior complex. Spock doesn’t know if he’s going to die there or not, and so he wants to let Bones know that he actually wants Bones to show warmth to him, he gives Bones a chance to put the facade aside, as he, Spock does it. Spock asks Bones for comfort, while doing something Bones was willing to do - sacrificing himself in the name of science and to save people. And here’s the fact Bones has to face: Spock actually can die.

To show Spock that he cares, is admitting the danger. Not hiding behind scientific motivations. It means that there is a possibility that this is the last time Spock and Bones see each other.

McCoy can’t do this. So he does not. He does not want to believe that Spock won their self-sacrifice competition once again, and that he, Bones, is realizing the sincerity of Spock. It goes against everything he believed in. Spock doesn’t like McCoy, because McCoy doesn’t like Spock… It’s easier to believe this then to let the truth be out that they are the same. He’s mad that Spock is right once again and angrily pushes the button himself.

But there’s guilt and pain. Spock showed his vulnerability. Spock literally admitted his warm feelings towards McCoy. Bones can not do this in return. He does not let himself do this. So he’s there in his pain, alone. Does not want to lose his face as it means admitting the truth. So he only wishes luck to Spock when he leaves, showing he cares not in Spock’s face, keeping his memo. Before this he can’t turn away and watches Spock go, probably for the last time. Maybe he wanted more? Maybe he wished Spock to pressure him more to finally say the truth? Maybe he just wanted Spock to say it even more openly…

When Spock thinks he is dying, the last thing he does is again admitting his feelings towards McCoy. “He should have wished me luck”. The last thing McCoy hears from Spock is that he, McCoy was valuable to him, and Spock is deeply hurt that Bones did not break his shell. And Spock wants McCoy to feel guilty about it. And McCoy does.

He even admits to Jim that he’s sentimental about Spock, doesn’t believe he’s dead. To face the truth means to face his own cruelty once again.

In the end, everything turns out fine and Bones even can feel good about himself because after all, he did not face his own egoism and self deception.

He is angry at Spock that Spock isn’t true to himself. Because he, Bones, isn’t true to himself either. And unfortunately he will continue lying to himself until it’s too late.

Favorite Tiny:

Yeah yeah call me basic but what can I say, she's awesome; across the original books she's in and the multiple adaptations of them, Arrietty Clock is a brave and clever and kind-spirited character and an icon, and is widely respected as such by most of this community for a reason lol

Favorite Giant:

Bumblebee doesn't even really speak for the majority of his own standalone film and he's still the biggest sweetheart, to Charlie especially but really to anyone and everyone across all the films, comics, and shows he's been in; as long as you're not a dick (to him or anyone), he'll be very polite (I mean look at him).

Favorite G/t Movie:

This one is tough because I wanna say it's a tie between Ferngully and Smallfoot. The former I saw for the first time at a young age (and as a result watched on repeat more times than I could count), and I still love it to this day; and the latter is actually really cute but I feel like no one ever talks about it; it ain't perfect (not by a long shot) but it's a decent enough film and deserves more love.

BFG by Roald Dahl. Easily. Read it for the first time in the fourth grade and my brain chemistry was forever changed. (/very pos)

Small Blessings by Danie Stirling (@whitherling); I have my own physical copies of both volumes but it's also available to read on Dillyhub. Very cute story, characters and art style, and overall I highly recommend it.

Favorite G/t Fictional World:

Gotta be the Borrowers. The established existence of a species of hidden small people has captivated me for YEARS and its entire concept is a staple of so much of this community's favorite media for a reason. (On that note I highly recommend the filmed adaptation series of the Mary Norton books from 1992, also on YouTube if anyone is curious)

Favorite G/t coded Song:

The music video for Touchy Feely Fool by AJR dropped almost a year ago now and I still won't shut up about it, it's great (and the song's a bop so that's just a bonus). (It's also hilarious to me that while Jack is running around trying to figure out what's going on, Adam and Ryan are just vibing the whole time lol) Also worth mentioning that AJR incorporates both subtle and blatant g/t themes into some of their other music, videos, and their live shows; very good stuff and also it's just good music, highly recommend.

Character I would like to Shrink/Grow:

There should be a g/t episode of Amazing Digital Circus. Fight me. Probably would best fit Pomni if just one of the cast members had to deal with it, but if all of them were periodically affected by some kind of size shifting to varying degrees (likely Caine's doing but even better if he's also involved), just THINK of the kinds of chaos that would ensue, oh it'd be great
