OK AU IDEA FOR A GHOAP FANFIC I MAY OR MAY NOT WRITE

Johnny as a selkie.

The whole thing would make most sense as a non military au, because I don't know of a way to write it in a military story that wouldn't make more sense as just a hybrid au.

See, there are a lot of interesting themes in selkie folklore to play with here. Very often the Selkie is a woman who becomes landlocked by a man stealing her seal skin. often, once she discovers her skin again she leaves to never be seen again. Selkies have a constant yearning for the sea when landlocked. There's also a few stories out there in which the man accidentally shoots the selkie when she's in her seal form.

there's two very obvious routes to take this.

You could have a subversion of how the story usually goes in folklore. In which Simon, maybe due to his own experiences, does not do as others before him and loves Johnny while leaving him his freedom. Could work from either perspective although I'm more inclined towards Simon.

Or you could take these themes of a relationship built on imprisonment and turn it to the max. This came to mind because I was thinking about a thramsay fanfic that did something similar (although I read that one before I had an ao3 account so sadly I don't remember the name). Where Ghost goes even further than those men. Selkies's skins are unique and cannot be replaced upon destruction. And once without their skin, a selkie can never transform into a seal again. So that would definitely be a longer story, in which Simon captures or lures Johnny into a vulnerable position, to then steal his skin first and keep Johnny like that. But then, inevitably, johnny tries to flee or similar, which will prompt ghost then to destroy his skin and prevent him from ever returning to the sea.

Also, in the old folklore the children of selkies and humans weren't selkies themselves. Rather, they had physical differences like webbing between their toes and fingers and were otherwise human. I've read something about cutting the webbing away resulting in it being replaced by a rough and rigid growth. So again there's opportunities here, with lots of angst for Johnny's children. (Because of course I'm making him also trans. Because why not)

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
