Pedagogy to the Test
My new wolfstar fic, Pedagogy to the Test, has landed on AO3! This is a multi chapter sequel to Teaching and Learning. It's spring, and Sirius is staying at Hogwarts.
I think we can all use a comforting tale right now. This will be about the same length as Teaching and Learning, and I'll post new chapters regularly. Chapter two will be posted in about a week.
I hope you enjoy it!

The thing that gets me about the whole word/phonics argument with teaching reading is that ignores a fundamental thing about teaching young kids in general - every. single. kid. learns differently. Every single kid has things that will gel with them and won't with others. The reason why the two methods exist in the first place is because some kids just don't get phonics, at least not at first, and AT FIRST is where we're learning to read. A five year old kid is still LEARNING TO SPEAK let alone read and form complex ideas, there's a reason early childhood educators tell parents not to worry too much if their year 1 or year 2 kid can't read a sentence easily.
You teach kids both. YOU TEACH KIDS BOTH. You give a kid every goddamn tool a kid needs to negotiate learning and you have a box full of them and they're many and varied and not all of them work.
Institutionalised learning is the worst system because it means we can't cater to every child's individual needs, and this is why rich parents and rich kids consistently get better outcomes than poor kids, because what happens with rich kids is that they get better modelling (their parents have time to talk to them and do things with them that encourage learning) and in the wealthier cases, tutors who can cater to individual needs.
BUT institutionalised learning is the only option a lot of kids have.
So.
TEACH BOTH.

tw: caps, school, bullying.
meeting a seminar leader who you was clearly the quiet kid in school because they never fucking do icebreakers and they never fucking pick on anyone and they always offer the option to work in groups OR BY YOURSELVES THAT’s also fine. (and they also recount all the times they got picked last in sports teams like same ily).
they make the best teachers and they change the system from the inside and i love them. i would be a teacher if i’d got to a better place with my social anxiety and trauma from bullying. but i love when people who were bullied in school go on to protect bullied students.
still, about changing the system from the inside: the system ain’t broken; it was just designed to hurt you. 🌹🌹

Duke is unapologetic for everything that comes out of his mouth. In fact, give him a mic, he'll say it louder.
Some way too old for that guy, trying to flirt with Cass: You know, you seem so mature for your age…
Duke, popping out of nowhere: And you're really fucking dumb for yours, man, fix this puddle of desperation on your head first and only then think about trying to fit into society. If even your hair doesn't want to be with you, what are you counting on?
Cass, who really didn't want to ruin her cute dress with blood: 👍🏻
A really annoying paparazzi: Hey, boy, how does it feel to become rich after, well, whatever you were before? Have your, erm, extracurricular activities changed? What's your favourite thing to do now?
Duke, with the straightest face known to mankind: No, it's still your mom. My favourite extracurricular activity, planning to do her more actually, thanks for the question.
Bruce, trying to parent a whole ass teen: So…
Duke: I really shouldn't have told this terrible, rude, insufferable piece of person to go eat shit. I genuinely regret it. I should have told her to go eat shit and die choking, such a missed opportunity, damn, I'm still upset.
Bruce: ...
Bruce, to himself: Why am I even trying?
There are a bunch of compilations on YouTube and Tiktok “Duke Thomas-Wayne has no PR training whatsoever”. Duke personally likes every single one of them.
#he thinks he is funny#because he is#it's hard to teach him manners when you're trying your best not to burst into hysterical laughter#he's not learning btw#batman#batfam#batfamily#duke thomas#still on my Duke kick as you can see

I'm writing a sequel to "Teaching and Learning!"
8k words so far, but it will be multiple chapters. Would you prefer I post chapter by chapter with gaps between as I write, or wait until the whole thing is done and then post a new chapter every few days?
Feel free to bookmark the series on AO3, or follow along for eventual updates on posting. I don't have a title for the sequel just yet :)

Why should you consider a diploma in teaching and learning?
Teaching has long been seen as a preferable career, often considered less demanding, more creative, and comfortable, especially for women balancing household and professional responsibilities. Today, this profession holds even greater value than before, but the ease and simplicity once associated with it have shifted.
In our fast-paced world, the demand for modern education and innovative teaching approaches has surged. It means that being an educator now requires an expanded focus beyond traditional methods toward embracing cutting- edge teaching aids and techniques.
If you're still passionate about shaping the future through education in this rapidly changing landscape, it might be time to contemplate pursuing a diploma in teaching and learning. This will enable you to stay updated with the latest trends, equipping you to navigate the evolving demands of education in the modern era.
What do you mean by modern teaching?
Modern teaching emphasizes enhancing learners skills through innovative teaching techniques rather than rigidly following syllabi solely for exam purposes. Over time, the teaching approach has shifted from teacher-centered to learner-centric, focusing on activity-based methods such as questioning, demonstrations, explanations, and practical applications. This contemporary teaching style accepts individuals as unique, each with distinct learning capabilities and comprehension levels, contrasting the conventional one-size-fits-all approach.
Embracing innovative teaching techniques is essential in the current scenario. It not only reduces tough competition among students but also fosters cooperation, creating a healthier study environment. That is why we advocate for pursuing a diploma in teaching and learning to equip educators with the tools to adopt these modern teaching techniques.
Characteristics of modern teaching methods
Teaching methods have shifted:
Student-centered: Teachers guide, allowing students to lead learning collaboratively.
Activity-focused: Learning is not about memorization but doing.
Interactive: Students cooperate, gaining knowledge from peers and preparing them for the real world.
Resource-driven: No spoon-feeding; teachers provide resources while encouraging independent research and peer learning.
Technology-driven: Modern aids like whiteboards and the internet create flexible, focused learning environments, saving time and enhancing understanding.
What skills should you gain as a modern teacher?
In the 21st century, a proficient teacher exceeds mere academic qualifications. They hold significant influence over how students absorb knowledge, emphasizing fundamental skills and a range of innovative teaching methods. Modern teaching demands a fusion of individual competencies and inventive approaches. In addition to subject mastery, contemporary educators should possess:
Adaptability to evolving learning standards and expectations.
Confidence to inspire and motivate others towards improvement.
Clear and effective communication skills.
Collaborative spirit to solve problems, foster learning, and cultivate enjoyment.
Imagination to devise original and engaging learning methodologies.
Proficiency in cutting-edge technology and relevant digital tools catering to student needs.
Leadership skills to steer students in the right direction.
Willingness to innovate, taking calculated risks to maintain student engagement.
Unwavering commitment to being a constant support for learners.
Ability to manage their online presence, discerning appropriate social networks for use.
