Chapter 12: Injury
Tumblr media
During the Clone Wars, the Bad Batch is tasked with a variety of missions across the galaxy. An unexpected addition to their team throws a wrench in the mix, particularly for Tech, who finds a particular connection with this disillusioned Padawan-turned-mechanic named Vel throughout the events in this action-adventure romance.

Weeks later, the full moon shone brightly above as Hunter sprinted between tree trunks, tapping the helmet comlink over his ear, "I told him to take that thing back to the ship!" he hissed, knife flashing in his hand.
"Apparently it would have been redundant to go back and forth," came Crosshair's reply, "and it would not have survived without the 'necessary accoutrements.'"
Hunter sighed, scaling the tall tree nearby to assess the situation through his macrobinoculars. Tech and Wrecker were in the middle of a large clearing on top of the hill, bound to two large vertical poles with thick strips of some kind of animal hide. There were additional poles scattered throughout the area. In the center of the clearing was a large bonfire, around which the poles were placed, and a large tribe of menacing leonine humanoids gathered, equipped with bows and spears of all shapes and sizes.
"Well I call this pretty redundant now," Hunter muttered over the com. The mission had been simple: capture the animal at the full moon and bring it back to Coruscant for further study. Its regenerative properties were of great interests to Kaminoan cloners and Republic scientists alike. Tech had successfully trapped the small, turtle-like creature and stashed it safely in his backpack, but he had then insisted on gathering some local habitat pieces for its journey and had brought Wrecker along for backup.
Both had been trapped in large, intricately-woven nets and found themselves trussed up like womp rats ready to be roasted. Wrecker showed no sign of stopping his loud protests until one of the tall tribal members stuffed his mouth full of cloth, reducing his bellows to muffled grumbles.
Tech had the sense to remain silent, observing the tribe with interest despite his less-than-fortunate predicament. They stood a full head and shoulders above even Wrecker, with long, wild manes and strong, prominent cheekbones. They had almond-shaped eyes, golden in color, with vertical slits for pupils. Long-clawed hands gripped thick spears decorated with straps and rocks, and they balanced on two large feet. Notably, each had a long, flickering tail with a small tuft of hair at the end.
"What's the plan, Hunter?" Crosshair asked, nestling closer to the tree trunk from his perch high above the hill. He peered through his scope, counting the heads and figuring the odds.
"We don't want to incite an entire conflict," Hunter answered. "We aren't even supposed to be here."
"They don't know who we are or where we're from," Crosshair replied. "We can--"
Sudden silence.
"Crosshair?" Hunter whispered, tapping the comlink twice. "Come in. Crosshair!"
Nothing but silence on the other end. Hunter furrowed his brow, turning with the macrobinoculars to scan the treeline for any sign of the grey armor or hair. He glanced back at the clearing at the sudden sound of drums -- ten or twenty of them, struck in unison to create an intimidating cacophony of rhythm.
A tall, imposing figure appeared at the edge of the circle of tribe members, decorated with a large, ornate frame upon his head. The hair of his mane was laced throughout it, holding it firmly in place, and from its various branches hung a display of fragmented shells and shimmering beads. He held a large staff, the top of which had been fashioned into a similarly-shaped frame as the one on his head.
The crowd parted as he approached the fire. Across the circle, another opening appeared, and Hunter zoomed in closer to see Crosshair, unconscious in a heavy net, being dragged toward an empty pole near Wrecker. He was freed from the net, propped up against the pole, and trussed up quickly to match his brothers. His head lolled on his chest and Wrecker muffled all kinds of profanities through his gag.
Hunter lowered the binocs, keeping a level head as he assessed the possibilities. He slid down the tree, crouching at the base to determine the best course of action. Sensing a threat behind him, he twisted to fire a stun blast just in time to drop the lion man who had been creeping up with a net in its hands. Time to move, he thought, stealing toward the circle noiselessly, knife and blaster at the ready.
The drums shifted to a steady roll as the chief arrived in front of the fire, then fell immediately quiet as he lifted his staff straight above his head. Everyone was silent, even Wrecker, and the only motion was Crosshair regaining consciousness, head rolling to an upright position with a groan.
His eyes opened with a flash, sudden realization settling in, and he looked around rapidly with a disdainful scowl. The tribesmen who had dragged him in threw his helmet and sniper into a pile of the other clones' equipment, all sitting at the feet of the chief, who then began to speak.
Without his visor, Tech was unable to translate, but the general gist was hard to miss. Condemnation spluttered forth in a roaring declaration of guilt as he gestured at the three of them. He stopped with his staff pointing to Tech, lowering to pick up his backpack from the ground. He held it out to a small youth next to him, who opened the backpack and retrieved the shelled creature they had been sent to retrieve. He handed it to the chief, who held it above his head, bellowing in anger now, before releasing it into the woods.
The guttural roars of the tribe rose to meet his, and Tech looked around with a growing sense of unease. He saw no sign of Hunter, but the fact that three of them were fairly useless was quite concerning. He racked his brain for any sort of plan, repeatedly checking on Crosshair to see if any sort of communication was possible.
The chief tapped his staff once again, and the crowd fell silent. He beckoned behind him, and another cub-like youth appeared with a basket in his hands. The chief reached in the basket, pulling out a spiny, bulbous thing with five long tentacles. It squirmed in his hand, wrapping its arms around his fingers, but he seemed unfazed.
The tribe stamped a foot, all together as one, and the chief approached Tech. They stomped again, in unison, and again as their leader drew closer. He motioned with his other hand, and two tribesmen pulled the cords behind Tech, freeing him from the pole. Still fully bound with his hands behind his back, tied from toes to shoulders, he struggled to maintain balance.
The stomping stopped abruptly as the staff was raised one last time, and the chief lifted the squirming creature in his hand. He made one final roaring declaration, pointing his staff at Tech, then at the other two, and then placed the animal in the middle of Tech's back. It enmeshed its tentacles around his armor plates, finding every gap between them, and then an entirely new set of arms came out from its middle, stretching to fill any other openings it could find. It seeped between the straps and armor effortlessly, and for a moment there was silence.
Hunter moved into position behind the closest tree to the clearing, stopping in his tracks as an inhuman scream filled the air. Writhing in pain, Tech fell to his knees, then onto his side, struggling against his restraints. There was no change or motion from the creature, except to further sink its tentacles into any space it could find.
Crosshair winced, grimacing in shared pain, and Wrecker pulled against the pole with all his might. A few of the straps snapped, but there were plenty more in place. Another bloodcurdling yell pierced Hunter's ears, Tech's voice cracking at the end. There was no clear plan, but there was no time to wait.
Hunter charged into the clearing, leveling two tribesmen with stun bolts as he ran toward Tech. They immediately reached for their bows and spears, and he ducked under a volley of arrows as he reached Tech's side. Firing off four more stun blasters, he swung his foot at the blob on Tech's back, but it remained firmly planted and the uncontrollable screaming continued.
The tribe closed in quickly, arrows flying left and right, and Hunter spun across the fire, dropping a smoke grenade for some cover. Blue rays hit the leonine figures and dropped them one by one, but there were far too many. Hunter returned to stand above Tech, one leg on either side, and found himself surrounded by spears, held at the ready, waiting for the chief's decree.
The chief started to roar but stopped as a brilliant ball of fire suddenly launched out of the bonfire in the center of the clearing. It spun around the poles, and the tribesmen leaped back in shock and awe. Completely separate from the burning logs, the large fireball made a perfectly circular orbit around the men, going so fast it was almost a blur, a wall of flame between them and the spears.
The chief tapped his staff twice, and the entire tribe fled into the trees with rumbles and squawks of confusion and apprehension. Utilizing the distraction to quickly cut Crosshair and Wrecker free, Hunter grabbed a dropped spear from one of the stunned lion men. He thrust it in the fire, noticing that the fireball had disappeared, and after a few seconds, put the burning hot end onto the creature wrapped around Tech.
It hissed and sizzled, and the arms retracted quickly, making nauseating sucking sounds. As soon as it had released him fully, Hunter delivered a swift kick, sending it flying, and cut the rest of the straps around Tech's arms and legs, but he remained on the ground in a fetal position, twitching and murmuring under his breath.

Chapter 19: Unpredictable

The door whooshed open and Vel's eyes widened at the array of bottles on shelves before her. Every shape and size was displayed, accented by a large mirror behind them all, and each was accompanied by the appropriate glasses for that particular drink. Her heart sank a bit, as it wasn't the laboratory she was expecting, but she covered her disappointment with an awed look around.
"This is my private bar," Terrik said, waving a careless hand around the room. It was furnished with plush couches covered in lush fabric, and Vel stroked a hand along the back of a chaise lounge as she followed him in. "It's a more... intimate space for entertaining."
Vel teetered for a moment, catching herself on the side of a wingback chair, and gripped it for stability. She cursed herself inwardly for being so free with her consumption, but also had a gut feeling to just relax and go along with it. It was going well so far; she just had to get to the lab. Terrik hadn't missed her slight tip, however, and a tiny smirk played at the corner of his lips.
"Can I get you another drink?" he asked, eyebrows raised in innocent cordiality.
"Oh, I'm fine," Vel demured, moving carefully to inspect a tall bookshelf with leather-bound volumes. "But look at all of these!" She started fingering the spines, perusing the titles with genuine interest, and noticed Terrik stiffen all of a sudden when she started to pull out one of the books.
"Come on, it's on me," he said warmly, beckoning toward the bar counter and placing a hand on her elbow. It had just enough firmness to make it clear that it wasn't a request.  A cold feeling started to grow in her stomach, and she allowed him to steer her away from the shelf.
He stepped behind the bar, throwing a white towel over his shoulder before turning to her with a flourish, "And what can I interest you in this time?"
"Surprise me," she mused, leaning over the counter and smiling coyly.
"Atta girl," he crooned, moving his face close to hers, "I think I know just what you like." She resisted the urge to pull away, spared by his turn to the wall of bottles and consequent drink mixing. As he poured and stirred, she slipped a hand under the counter, feeling around in her small purse for the marker. She definitely hadn't missed his discomfort at her proximity to the bookshelf, and wanted to be ready once she was able to confirm the lab's location.
"Whatcha doin down there?" Terrik asked, startling her from her thoughts as she realized she hadn't been as subtle as she'd hoped.
"Just looking for this," she said, producing a tube of lipstick after a quick rummage. "All these drinks are making me a little messy." She smiled breezily, running the lipstick along her lips while he watched, giving them a cute little smack at the end. He chuckled, looking down to pour the drinks out of their mixer, and she put the lipstick back into her back, feeling her hand tremble a bit.
"Come," Terrik invited, carrying the glasses to a purposefully small couch. Vel tucked her purse under her arm, draping herself across one side of the couch as gracefully as possible, and accepted the glass from him with a small "thanks". He sat next to her, crossing a foot across his knee and stretching an arm behind her.
***
Tech tapped his foot incessantly, waking up his datapad, checking the same settings he had checked the last eighteen times, and putting it back down. He glanced around anxiously, wondering how the other three were so nonchalant about it all. His sleeves were thoroughly wrinkled from having been folded up and down repeatedly, and he had been unable to resist loosening his tie to unbutton the top of his collar.
"She should have activated it by now," he said, pacing back and forth. "There is no reason for this to have--"
He was interrupted by a ping from the datapad that sent him a few inches into the air in response. He whipped it from his belt, "There it is!" he said, "Time to go."
"She has three minutes to get him out of there, then," Hunter responded. "Tuck in your blasters; we'll be down there shortly."
***
Hunter listened silently outside the door for a moment, then motioned for Tech to override the controls. The door slid open and they slipped into the room, looking around in confusion as they observed not a lab but yet another sort of lounge.
"Look at all that!" Wrecker whispered, pointing to the mirrored wall of liquor bottles as they slowly moved toward the center of the room.
Something felt instantly off, and Hunter whipped his knife from his wrist sheath, raising a closed fist. The other three halted immediately, but the room shifted before their eyes. The entire space was lined with thick curtains hanging from rods, brought together in neat pillars of velvety fabric tied back with a sash. Or so it had appeared: the bottoms of each pillar rotated suddenly, revealing two guard droids in each one that promptly sprang forth, leveling small blasters at the clones.
"Hmm, interesting. I was wondering who would come," Terrik said darkly, emerging from the shadows to their right with a blaster in his hand. "I found the most curious little trinket in your friend's purse here, and I just had to see what would happen. So that's the plan, is it? Have her seduce me so you can come and steal from my personal inventory? You lot are all the same."
"Steal?" Wrecker asked, unfazed in the sights of thirty-two blasters.
Hunter flickered a pointed glance toward the liquor wall, putting the pieces together in his head and also confirming the accusation.
"Mmhmm," Terrik mused, "I'm never wrong. But I think a lesson is in order, to teach bantha fodder like you about stealing from me." He reached behind him, pulling Vel out from the darkened corner, and held her in front of him, turning the blaster toward her temple. "I'll give you a choice," he continued, "One of you gets to go tell the rest of your lot what happens when you cross me. The rest... well, unfortunately, your taste for the finer things will cost your lives."
