Tecnomancy - Ectoburhaunt Day 2

ugh I thought I could churn this out in less than a day. It has been much more than a day. I also spelled tecnomancy wrong fuuuuuuuge. Context and more mumbling under the cut.

Anyways, Val is learning technomancy, and I thought it would be funny if one of the first things she learns is how to project her instructions onto a wall. She is reading from a foldable tablet(like those weird folding phone with a screen on both sides-I hope you know what I’m taking about). I also used like, no posing references and had no idea what I was doing with the projection thingy. Also, I didn’t know what to do with the lighting. I am definitely going to use references next time.

Okay, let the record show that Sam didn’t intend all of this to happen.

Some (Tucker) would argue that it began when Sam began her journey into vegetarianism, while others (Sam) would argue that it began when Tucker was born, and his stubbornness came into existence.

For simplicity’s sake, the beginning of this situation came in the form of Danny going into the Ghost Zone; he ended up visiting Princess Dora’s haunt. While visiting, Danny noticed that surrounding her castle were several strange plants that stood in the trenches of once might have been a moat.

“Hey Dora, what are those plants doing there?”

Dora looked at the direction he was pointing at and hummed, “Those are special plants meant to guard the castle. Moats aren’t as useful when everyone can fly, you see.” Danny continued to look curiously at the plants.

Some of the plants looked like earthly flowers, with some of the colors harsher and brighter to match with the rest of the Ghost Zone. Something about them gave off an odd feeling in Danny’s chest. Nothing as instinctually frightening as blood blossoms, but they kept him guarded. Princess Dora hadn’t noticed Danny’s silent observations and continued to explain some of their properties.

“You see, for some of the weaker pest-like creatures, these plants are good at disorienting and repelling; similar to how lavender repels mosquitos. Some of the larger ones – like the trees next to the drawbridge – are much more potent and have specific forms of protection. If I whisper a special incantation into the hollow of the tree, the branches can extend and create a barricade of sorts preventing anything to pass through the bridge.”

“That’s a pretty cool way of protecting yourself.” Danny couldn’t help but wonder aloud, “How did you even discover what these plants do?”

Princess Dora perked up at the question, “Oh, I have a book in the palace library that has all sorts of helpful information about these plants! Would you like to see it for yourself?”

What Princess Dora doesn’t realize is that Danny would much rather let her set him on fire in her dragon form than sit in a stuffy library all afternoon. Danny, however, was taught some semblance of manners, and held his tongue on that thought.

“Oh, no thank you. This seems more of Sam’s wheelhouse than mine to be honest.”

“Oh…Lady Samantha?” Princess Dora said coyly, her gentle smile taking on a more mischievous smirk.

“Just Sam, she doesn’t like to be called that,” Danny crossed his arms and tried to look at her sternly for a moment before looking down embarrassed, “and don’t look at me like that,” he muttered.

Dora couldn’t help herself and let out one last giggle before composing herself and suggested lending her book to Danny’s dear friend for a short period of time.

It was a kind gesture for Danny to think of his friend in that moment. After all, Sam had been consumed with upkeeping her greenhouse and trying to expand into growing her own vegetables. She’s spent the last two weeks ranting about fertilizers and visiting libraries and bookstores to see if there were any solutions to her struggling hobby.

At first, her friends would nod supportively whenever she went on her tirades; however, teenage boys are not known for their patience, and Tucker and Danny are no exception.

To be fair, their relaxing weekend was replaced with an early morning visit to the farmer’s market and digging through compost bins collecting soil samples for Sam to take home.

“Sam, I think we’ve managed to bother every single gardener in a ten-mile radius about your gardening issues,” Danny whined. The two of them were sitting in Tucker’s room, waiting for him to get back with the pizza they ordered earlier.

Sam was busy flipping through another gardening magazine and distractedly replied, “And I’m going to keep bothering anyone who might know something about plants until we figure out how to keep my plants from dying.”

Tucker came in at that moment, pizza in hand, and asked Sam, “So if we find a way to keep your plants alive, we won’t need to go dumpster diving for daffodils and daisies?”

“Yeah, basically,” Sam replied.

And so, Danny and Tucker had a new goal in mind.

The day after Danny met up with Dora, Sam received the book.

Tucker and Sam were sitting in the cafeteria for lunch. Tucker was rambling about nanobots detecting fertile soil of some sort. His glasses failing at hiding the dark rings surrounding them.

“I don’t know Tuck…” she mumbled to herself. Tucker was scrolling through his PDA, showing Sam something on his screen, not realizing that Danny had arrived at the table.

“Hey, I might have something for you to help with your gardening. Princess Dora gave me a book all about ghost plants. Maybe there’s some tips for you in there.”

Sam smiled at Danny and thanked him. She then turned to Tucker and sternly said, “Tucker, put away your PDA and eat something!”

Sam was skeptical, but decided to give it a shot regardless once she got home. However, she wasn’t risking her greenhouse on this test. She took a potted fern in her room and began speaking to it, in what she belatedly realized was ghost speak. (Her pronunciation “gives her a strange accent” according to Danny, but it works well enough.)

The leaves began to turn a bright purple and started making her feel drowsy. “That’s not good,” she thought to herself.

Once she started walking away from the plant and her foggy mind cleared, she suddenly notices that Tucker is calling her. She answers and before she can speak, Sam hears unintelligible screams through the phone.

“Sam! Get over to the gardening club, now!”

“Tucker, what is it?! Is it a ghost?” Sam opens her closet and grabs a hidden box, containing her ghost catching equipment.

“Worse! I think I revived James Amity!”

Sam pauses for a moment, “…the founder of this town?”

“Yes!”

“How?”

“It’s nanobots, Sam! They regenerated his cells!”

“…Hold on I’ll be right there, send me your location.”

“Hurry!” Tucker yells and hangs up, presumably to figure out what to do with a reanimated corpse.

Before she left to go find Tucker, Sam grabbed a plastic bag and took her new ghostly fern and placed it inside. “Well, I hope this helps.”

Dear Phandom new and old, sorry for the delay but this here is our 2023 theme and prompt list! Once again we've changed it up a little to make it a little easier on all of us, and to invite fun and mayhem Phandom wide! Oh. Perfumes and drugs. Because nothing has ever gone wrong with perfumes and drugs in the Vorkosigan family before. My bets are now on an allergic reaction.

XDDDD Poor Ivan. Doesn't deserve this slander. But it's cool that Miles worries.

Oh, we're profiling suspects! This is really Detective Miles: the book. So, Lord X (or Lady X, Miles), is our suspect. It makes sense that even if Yenaro was actively trying to harm them he needed help to make the sculpture.

My main suspect rn is the Emperor but we'll see.

Me: Too much drink description. Is it poisoned? Maybe it's like in the Princess Bride where... Miles: Ah. Yes. This could easily be poisoned in this and that way. Me: Miles I adore you.

Day 2

Tecnomancy vs Botanomancy

“Hey tuck.”

“Yeah?”

“Why are you burning your notes?”

“It’s for the omens.” Tucker doesn’t look way, his focus is 100% on the burning school work. 

“The- How many redbulls have you had?”

“Not enough man. Not enough.” 

Danny hovered in place and watched Tucker watch the pire. 

“So, you finding those omens?”

“I dunno.” Tucker takes the bucket next to him and douses the fire in it. Once the fire’s out, he bends over to examine the remains. 

Danny leans over as well, and points to a clump of mush. “That an omen?”

Tucker shrugs. “Could be.”

“Hm.” Danny nodded. “So um, why-”

“Sam’s grandma gave me this book and it had spells and I figured -if I couldn’t hack my way into the midterm answers, maybe witchcraft.- This was under botanomancy and sounded cool and easy but I’m no closer to passing…”

“Um, dude, we could just study.” 

“You don’t get it. I need to pass, my sweet Clair is depending on me.”

“Oh, you’re parents finally are resorting to that.”

Tucker looked at him with sadness. “I can’t lose her.” 

“Common. Leave your mess behind and lets go ask Jazz for some help.”

Dedicated Spaces in Tech Magic

Welp, I was in a bit of a funk re: my craft and then I was inspired by a question from @artsiwych sooo... Have some talk about making a dedicated space for your tech magic. I'll try to go back through soon and link resources but this was a 2am mad type-up.

So, one of the nice things about tech magic is it doesn't require much physical space or presence. It blends nicely into your mundane life so if you are living with those who don't support witchcraft or just prefer to not explain an altar to visitors to your place? Tech witchcraft is amazing for that.

This does NOT mean you can get away with not having a dedicated space to practice, however. Sure, I'll do programming work on whatever machine is available, but the serious work? The actual craft of things? I have separate devices, accounts, even separate Discord servers for my bots when doing serious magical work like one would do at an altar. Tech magic may be digital but it is still magic and you need to set it apart from your other digital doings.

There's a number of ways you can do this. I'm going to devide this into both physical and digital elements, so think from both angles to find whichever one fits your budget, means, and workflow.

Separate physical devices

Much like an altar can be anything from a table to an Altoids tin, you can easily keep a digital device set apart for your witchy doings. This can be anything from a USB flash drive to a completely separate computer/device.

If you want to go to the moon, you can do something like I have with my Raspberry Pi Zero W where I can remote connect to it using wi-fi. Have I mentioned the device was $15 for the board and the case? It's a steal of a computer, especially if you have some old micro-usb chargers lying around. You could also use an old cellphone just for magical work, if you like mobile apps. Or you could have a flash drive with whatever setup you wish on it, whether that is a bootable OS setup or just a bunch of files. Think outside the box and do some research on small computers or repurposing old tech. There's a lot you can do on this end of things.

Separate digital spaces

If you are using a device you usually use for mundane activities for magical ones as well, consider setting up a separate digital space for your craft. At the bare minimum, anyone using cloud storage for their craft should consider making an account separate from their primary. But this can be much more complex as well, as it is easy to fall into old habits when using the same space for both mundane and magical activities.

One easy way to do this is to make a second user account on your PC and use it just for magical work. This is a trick I suggest to people who have trouble shutting off their notifications on their main profile, as it isolates you from your usual space. This clear digital line between accounts keeps you on task.

On the other hand, if you have a need to swap back and forth, try a Virtual Machine on your computer. This lets you run a computer within your computer, complete with its own OS. Now, installing an OS on a Virtual Machine can be tricky, especially if your current OS license is for one computer only. If this is the case, Linux is going to be your friend. Find a distro you like and give it a try. Ubuntu is always a solid choice if you want somewhere to start.

Things to consider:

- What sort of mobility does your tech space need?

- If writing code, what languages will you need to write and what apps to compile and process?

- If working with graphics, what physical and digital requirements does your space need?

- Do you want a graphical interface, or a command line interface?

- Do you want to use systems you are comfortable with, or do you want to learn something new in the process of setting up your space? Systems you are comfortable with will ensure less fumbling in the middle of your craft, but sometimes pushing yourself to learn something new creates a build up of energy you can add to your work.

Hunt - Tecnomancy - Day 5

I used a reference for the pose!!! It looks good! Ahh! I’m so proud of the lighting on this one, it’s the best I’ve done so far I think. The gripped fabric and mouth looks off tho for I need to practice that a bit more. Overall, I like this piece :)

There’s some writing about the aftermath of this scene under the cut because I thought it would be cool. A certain someone finds a very vulnerable Danny, who has just escaped from a dangerous confrontation from his parents.

A child appears, far away from the alleyway, scarred from the inside out. He knows he’ll be found soon if he doesn’t transform back, but his mind is as messy as his room that he long for. A breath. His thoughts pause as he looks at vampiric ghost before him. The MONSTER smiles at him. The MONSTER speaks to the FOOL. “They’re hunting the MONSTER that YOU know YOU aren’t. “The MONSTER was never there, but THEY needed SOMEONE to take IT’S place.” “Oh, time and time again, a HUNTER stalks IT’S PREY.” “I...I have no idea what you’re talking about VLAD!” “Join ME, DANIEL! Join ME, so YOU no longer have to look at those HUNTERS with SHAME.” ”...” “That GREEN GLOW shines brightest when it’s shot at YOU, doesn’t it?”

Sooo rambling here cause while it is tmnt related it doesnt exactly fit on my au blog. Its mostly musings and questions.

Firstly thinking about the turtles love languages and what they might be...partly inspired by seeing someone post about their aus version of donnies love language(s) and it got me thinking about it.

Moat versions of donnie seem to have gift giving/an act of service as their love language. I think we see this most, of the animated turtles specifically, with 2003 and Rise Donnie, correct me if im wrong, but the other Donnies still do this very often.

The mikeys seem to have physical touch as theit love language which is why they often are initating contact with their brothers. Its also why usually if the mikeys are huggers their usually the first to hug their brothers.

Unfortuantly I cant exactly pin point the leos and raphs , at least not well,because well admidedly I have a harder time getting into their heads. I have a little bit of what the leos might be but im not

I think some of the leos also have an act of sevice as their love language but not all of them? But I feel they have another love langauage as well.

If I have to take a shot in the dark for the raphs uhh I think it depends but a couple of raphs seem like words of afformation? Please note this is not a stable guess and what yall think about this all!

The next bits kinda pertain to rise specifically namely the ninpo. So it was floating around that apparently the writers intended for the ninpo/mystics the boys have to get stronger/more varried as time went on/they got older and im curious what people think those abilities might be. I have my own ideas and ill share what they are and why but they might be...underwhelming.

Please note this would be the good time line where no one lost their ninpo to the krang and they can all develop it as they get older.

Imma start with leo cause hes the one i was able to think of easily

Mass teleport with no portals. In the fight against shredder leos show to be able to telepodt without making portals first and even swapping with people and its been show he can still use his portals for long distance or group teleporting, or even delayed teleporting so instanious group teleportation doesnt seem too much a stretch.

Healing ngl I am a fan of medic leo, how ever I belive medic leo is more likely to happen after the events of the movie as before hand they seemed to heal fairly fast and may have not had majorly needed a medic nessisarly.

Water manipulation this is a bit...indulgent, my sister who I roll play with a lot and I have always associated the leos with the element of water soo....

Next imma gonna do Donnie

Tecnomancy- obviously donnies ninpo/mystics connect more with his liking of science and technology and his creativity. Being able to simply mentally connecr with and control technology would certainly be a step in the right direction I think. This would actually be the broad term to use and some other abilities I thought of certainnly fall under it.

Data collection- more or less he touches something technology based and any information it has kinda gets for lack of a better word "downloaded" into his brain.

Manipulation of tech- kinda taking already exsiting tech and uaing his ninpo to turn it into something else.

Electricity manipulation- zappy zapps...*cough* ok but in all seriousness being able to manipulate the electricity that powers his tech would help with the powers/flow of the tech.

Mikey

Err ngl a lot of mikeys abilities would probably be inspired by the movie because well yeah

Flight- was show to have at least levitation if not outght right flight in the movie.

Teleportation-seen in the movie as a mystic master

Fire manipulation- already shows shades od this by summoning fires with his nunchucks

Super speed-mikey is extreamly energetic and that could easily translate into this

Just magic just just magic what ever draxum could teach this kid

Raph...I dont got much

Barriers cause hes a protective older brother

Clones cause he was shown to be able to do that in the shredder fight even if we didnt see it in the movie

Maybe an elemental manipulation since his brothers also have those in their power listings

I look at raphs powers and ask myself how to work with this

....

Finally this is an in general thing uhh how does one write a fight scene im working on a fic for my tmnt aus and Im...just how do fight scene?

I believe "meds" is used for medical staff. I recall a word like that, "tecnomed", in earlier books.

I have hopes for fastpenta! The Vor Game didn't translate it, it just said "interrogate" and "needle" but it never gave it a word. So far the only book to translate it was Barrayar, which used "pentotal", but given that they didn't keep nor cetagandanés nor disruptor nervioso, I doubt that it'd be the same.

And about Ivan or Iván, I think I've seen both over the books. So you can write Iván if you like :D

(I'm gonna start keeping an excel on how everything is translated across books cause I'm going crazy lol)

Cetanganda: Foreword and ch. 1

Cetaganda here we go!

Something marvelous happened: there was only one Cetaganda volume left in my e-library! There's two copies available at any given time for most Vorkosigan books, so that means there's other person reading the book too. I requested that they continued the Vorkosigan saga selfishly last year after reading Shards and Barrayar (I only had TWA left) so it makes me happy that other people are benefiting too. (I was so surprised when the library answered my request the following week with "Sorry, we could only get up to no 10 :/". That's 7 books more than you had before!!)

This edition has a foreword written in 1996 explaining the context of the Vorkosigan saga at the time. The guy is extremely excited for Memory to come out, and wonders if either Cetaganda or Memory would get the 1997 Hugo. A Wikipedia search reveals neither did and that the foreword guy died in 2021. Oh, well. I hope Memory also has a prologue from him so I can know if he liked it. He did seem to like Cetanganda a lot!

Ivan and Miles right off the bat! And Tung mention! Oh this is gonna be good.

And this TL has sci-fi words! "Vehivaina". What's that, vehipod?

Ivan is 22 and Miles is 21 and will be 22 in some months which doesn't math with previous books, I recall in TWA Miles tells Elena that he is registered as born when transferred to the uterine replicator, and that would make him a bit older than Ivan as per Barrayar. This implies that his birthday was at some point changed to his second birth. Is this correct??? Sounds weird, but I can totally picture him changing his birthday for some weird paperwork issues when entering the military academy or something. Or maybe it's a security issue and he had to change his birthday to not have the same as Admiral Naismith.

Anyway this sets this book two/one-half-ish years after TVG. Cool!

If this tedious duty ran to schedule, he should actually be back home in time for a celebration, for a change. A pleasant thought
