Ectoberhaunt 2023: Science VS Magic
Dear Phandom new and old, sorry for the delay but this here is our 2023 theme and prompt list! Once again we've changed it up a little to make it a little easier on all of us, and to invite fun and mayhem Phandom wide! Prompts are once again Monday-Friday, with Friday being singular prompts, and weekends being (mostly) free as catch up days. The only real change is our new 'isekai weekend' on the 21st and 22nd, with two different sub prompts for the days. Isekai is a subgenre of anime in which a character ends up in a different place or world all together. It literally translates to 'otherworld'! The two prompts for this weekend are 'past prompt', where we want to see the Phandom use a prompt from either of our previous calendars. The other is 'portal shenanigans'. We highly encourage you to create crossover content and AUs you've wanted to play with. As always, our last prompt day is October 24th to make way for the Ectober Week event. This means our free days are the 1st, 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, with the 25th-31st being @ectoberweekofficial's time to shine. Please tag all prompt fills as "Ectoberhaunt23", and follow the additional posting guidelines below!
Posting for this event begins October 2nd!
Down below are our written out calendar prompts (for accessibility) AND our posting guidelines. Check 'em out!

Post Guidelines
The following are the posting guidelines. Please follow them so we can reblog and share your posts without issue. We will also have this as a post available on our blog separately.
Tag all posts with “Ectoberhaunt23” so we can find it. If you do not use this tag, we may not find you.
Tag which calendar you're pulling from (“EH Science” or “EH Magic”), which day the prompt is for ("Day X"), and which prompt(s) you completed ("Eyes" "Teeth"). Example: #ectoberhaunt23 #EH science #day 5 #hunt Single day prompts, such as the ones on Friday, do not need a tag for which calendar it's for.
Put your fics under a readmore. Add a summary before the cut with a short preview, content warnings, and which prompts were used. Then, add a readmore no more than 150 words or 10 lines/groups of text under your summary. If you're using mobile, type :readmore: and hit enter to make a readmore. If you do not do this, we will NOT reblog your post.
Make sure to tag all common content warnings (blood, gore, death, drugs, body horror, existentialism, & vermin)
We will try to reblog every prompt we can. Feel free to @ us in the post too or send us a DM with the post!!
Feel free to shoot us an ask about rules/clarifications and any queries on prompts. Our discord is open as are our messages.
Here is a spreadsheet you can use to track your progress made by the talented @ajitated

Cass/Danny Weekend - Fun Fact! Day 4
We are back for Day 4~!!! We are now halfway through our fun facts for this event, and we are so happy you tuned in. Today we have a fun fact for Danny planned for you~ and of course it's only fair that we play another game of:
✨ Where did you see that? ✨
This time we're going to focus on Danny and space! Now Danny's love for space is exhibited in a couple different ways in the fandom. More recently you might have seen it expressed as "Ancient of Space" Danny, or some form of aerospace engineering as a career. It usually comes with some form of conversation about his grades, which we'll save for another fun fact post.
Now the fun part about this element is that we have a lot of material that showcases Danny's love for space. In "Mystery Meat", Danny's very first line in both the episode and the entire show features him telling his father he wants to be an astronaut. (For further context, Jack thinks Danny and his friends want to learn how to hunt ghosts. Despite Danny's refusal, they still learn on their own anyways.)
In "Flirting with Disaster", Danny actually gets to go to space when he tries to stop Technus from taking control of a satellite. He expresses his excitement by exclaiming, "Whoaaaaa! Hey! I'm an astronaut!"
Now this tidbit is my personal favorite, but in "Kindred Spirits" when Dani comes to Fenton Works, we get a shot in Danny's bedroom. And along the wall there are posters of space or astronomy-themed paraphernalia, particularly a NASA Space Camp poster and, you might have heard about it before, a Junior Space Cadet Certificate of Completion. Of course he also has miniature figures on his shelves but a certificate. I'm so proud of him.
Tumblr media
(got this clean screenshot from vladdyissues, thank you for your service)
Lastly, I wanted to bring attention to "Reality Trip", where Danny pilots a space shuttle after it comes to life from the power of the Gem of Life. During this encounter he talks about how he "always wanted to ride on the Space Shuttle, just not on the outside!" and later remarks how he used to do simulations all the time, which allowed him to pilot and land the shuttle safely.
I actually really love Reality Trip, it was a great finale and I liked a lot of the development it gave the Fenton parents and background characters like Paulina and Dash who supported Danny, now that his identity had been revealed to the world. So if there's one episode you can watch for Phantom, let it be this one.
I'm joking, don't watch this episode. Go watch Mystery Meat, it gives a much better basis for all their characterizations and it's just a fun episode. If you can, please try to watch the Danny Phantom Rephanimated version specifically, I know a lot of people have had trouble viewing it because it got blocked in the US, but it's been so fun to see the scenes that individual creators have been posting to show their work. Please give them some love for us~
We'll see you in a flash-!

so, jack, maddie, vlad are millennials and danny and them are gen z/alpha? imaginging tucker on tiktok or something.
In a potential reboot era YEAH/
Honestly now I'm kinda looking at DP and imagining how things would have shifted if they were in 2020s culture
Like I already mentioned I want Technus to fistfight elon.
Same with Tucker because he was also a tech bro in the original but with his whole thing about modding his tech he'd be kicking it oldschool anyway because new tech you can't mod as easily.
Still leads to the whole problem with Skulker and the schedule program lmao.
Paulina is def a tiktok influencer lmao.
Spectra is THRIVING off Covid Trauma.
Ghost Writer has discovered ao3. No one is getting out unschathed.
Ember starts getting popular only for Taylor Swift to re-release a song and knock her off the charts and girl goes absolutely /apeshit/

Tucker foley headcanons?
-Sometimes tinkers with the Fenton Gadgets that they deemed too useless/broken, either making them work or turning them into something different, yet more functional in their new purpose. Maddie has seen this and offered him an internship at Fentonworks which he turned down.
-Mods his own videogames.
-The time he wished for ghost powers from Desiree is something he looks back on sometimes in a 'wow, she COULD'VE killed me and made me a permanent ghost when I wished for that that one time but instead she possessed me with some random spirit as to being full on evil with the wish she granted like she usually does. …Maybe she likes me' way.
-Has a secret fursona (A cyborg wolf named 'wirewolf').
-Made a program that, when it detects that Technus has possessed his PC, compresses him into one of those little Desktop buddy things to keep him from messing with his files without his permission. Those two have a friendly rivalry outside of the whole ghost hunting thing.
-Is jealous of Danny and Sam, in an 'I want what they have' way.

speaking of Walker, lol what would you have done to integrate him more into the dp universe? Or what dynamics do you think he would have with the other ghost?
There’s so many ways they could have done more with him.
-More episodes of him hunting Wulf.
-An episode showing how Wulf came to be Walker’s prisoner in the first place. We know nothing about Wulf, basically. An episode even showcases that Wulf has the third highest bounty in the Ghost Zone behind Undergrowth and Vortex. Why? What did he do? He doesn’t posses extreme powers like the other two, the most amazing thing he has is the portal-making claws. So what was the deal?
-Ghost court
-Personally I’m very on the fence about him being a member or the founder of the Men In White. Walker was definitely made before they were a thing, and they’re just a parody of the Men In Black. Still, that could be an option.
-episodes where he could have agreed to cut someone’s sentence if they brought him Danny. Maybe he even hired multiple to basically ensure a successful arrest.
Not what you asked, but I do wanna point out how strange it is that Walker is one of the few recurring antagonists of the show who does not appear in Dan’s dark timeline. To me, this always insinuated he was destroyed by Dan. You know darn well he would have tried to stop Dan.
As far as dynamics with other ghosts go:
Lunch Lady- Trusts her enough to let her routinely work in the prison serving food to the other prisoners.
Box Ghost- Pities but can’t really admit it outloud.
Skulker- Despises, but could possibly hire to get Danny or Wulf. (Speaking of, why the hell WASN’T there an episode where Skulker hunted Wulf, either hired by Walker or not?)
 Desiree- indifferent.
Johnny 13- Punk. Loud bike that he hates. Shadow makes it hard to keep him incarcerated
Kitty- Feels bad for her, if she wasn’t with Johnny maybe she wouldn’t be so bad
Ember- another loud punk that really needs to be taught some manners and rules.
Youngblood- Understand he’s a bratty child, and when he causes trouble he’s just doing what children do. Still, wishes someone would give him a spanking
Technus- Is mostly fine with, though he routinely needs to be searched and have his things confiscated. Walker enjoys the things he usually gets from Technus, they could be used to try and capture other prisoners, or Danny.
if there’s others I missed (and I did miss some, I know) just ask.

The Fenton family computer is a digital pool of irradiated toxic goop, - Danny keeps installing new games and never gets rid of them, even when he lost interest months ago - Jazz keeps downloading very dubious Sims mods to make the psychological torment of her virtual dolls as realistic as possible - Jack clicks on every pop up he gets if it’s attention grabbing enough. He’s installed several cool cursors, three “desktop buddies”, a screensaver of an animated ghost that makes the computer overheat whenever it runs and a messaging app that only him and like three other people in the world use (Jack and those guys are all friends now) - Maddie uses the computer to get into absolutely unhinged online arguments, which may not affect the computer itself but it does affect it’s vibes - Technus uses it to mine cryptocurrency

What if the ghosts played Minecraft? What if there was a ghost that decided they wanted to live in Minecraft? What do they even be able to do it
So you’ve come to an expert I see!
If a ghost wanted to ‘live in Minecraft’, their lair and aesthetic could be Minecraft. Think Max Brooks’ Minecraft: The Island. Said Minecraft ghost would appear like a Minecraft skin, even outside of their lair and would only able to cycle through certain emotions. They would also treat real objects like blocks or items in the game… and it would work. They’d need to punch/break stuff to acquire it, and would have a fully working inventory. Also hunger which is not great. They would be able to respawn back in their lair and craft armor so they could potentially be kind of powerful actually-
While incredibly cursed, they would be relatively harmless, and only come through portals to check for updates.
(Also the ghosts do play Minecraft. This ask has made my headcanon that all of Danny’s casual enemies have a Minecraft server that they all play on its the most chaotic shit ever. The server is modded to hell and back so they aren’t bound to plebeian non-dead Minecraft player rules. Technus is admin, because he would not play otherwise. He doesn’t actually do anything with this: Entirely unhelpful creative mode server God boi™. Tucker is the only actual staff because Skulker didn’t want to be in charge of maintaining the server once he found someone good enough at game stuff to take over. Tucker hates this but also can’t bring himself to just NOT do it. Ember learns Redstone specifically so she can make music in Minecraft also. She also has every disc on the server. Not just loot. She steals any discs anyone else gets and has them all. Pointdexter also knows redstone; he is worse at it than Ember, he just uses his skills to do actual things where she doesn’t. Kitty and Danny are the only ones that just play the game normally. Danny also patches the creeper holes like a Saint. Johnny fucks with everyone’s builds when he’s bored; this is the only reason he comes online. Sam has beaten all the ghosts at pvp, a lot of them at the same time; she is just that skilled. Lunch lady is there too, dedicating all her time online to killing and cooking every animal she comes across. On the one hand, she keeps the entire server fed, on the other hand she destroys all the farms and no one can have an edible pet or it WILL die. Skulker collects money heads, and it’s actually really impressive. He’s killed the Ender dragon a figmillion times; he just keeps respawning it for fun. Youngblood makes a tonne of ugly builds and lava casts, because pretty servers can’t exist with people like these. On that note, Box ghost is also whitelisted. No one knows how, but he keeps logging on and building dirt shacks. Dani plays also, because Danny gave her the IP address. She comes online to talk to Danny instead of calling or texting him with the phone she absolutely has. Valerie also has access to the server via ‘Phantom’. This was not a good decision. She destroys all of Danny’s stuff specifically. She griefs everyone, because ghosts, but mostly just blows up whatever Danny is making. She doesn’t come on often and it never occurs to them to just ban her- Dora and Klemperer also get to be on the server. This is good for them, they are just having a good times. Vlad is not allowed on the server, because he is a fruitloop and no one wants that. How do all the ghosts get their computer? Theft of course! And lots of it! This is fine.)

Thread: PHANTOM: MUTANT OR CRYPTID?
Original Poster: Roswell’s Child
Roswell’s Child (OP): (Video clips for reference and evidence) ok so according to the ghosts phantom isnt one. question is what is he? you all know my initial thought is alien but phantoms referenced growing up here a few times and hes way too chil with memes to be completely out of nowhere. that leaves mutant or cryptid and its our duty as amigos to decide
Cynosure: This is a really impressive video compilation, OP, but I always got the impression that it was because he was fighting them? Like, how, idk, someone from an enemy country or an enemy gang might be called ‘not one of us’ or ‘different.’ Or maybe he’s just a different species of ghost?
Valorous1: His name is Phantom, he’s pretty solidly a ghost
passthemike: I VOTE MUTANT. That would be so cool. Do you think he got it from ectoplasm exposure?
passthemike: Do you think other people could get it? I have been slimed a few times by the Fentons. I want powers.
passthemike: Maybe he drank it?
ashtree: could get some from ghost fights it isn’t like it’s hard
Pharaoh (MOD): @passthemike @ashtreeWe highly recommend that you DO NOT consume ectoplasm left from ghost fights. While purified, denatured ectoplasm has little effect on humans when consumed, that is not the case when dealing with ectoplasm sourced directly from ghosts. Please see the Advice Blog article on ectoplasm for more information.
Photosynthesis (MOD): Even ignoring the blatant phasmovory, don’t eat stuff from the ground. That’s gross. @ashtree this is your second strike. Review the AAP forum rules and FOLLOW THEM this time, or you’ll be hit with a ban.
FootballPoet: I thought Phantom was already a cryptid??????
Valorous1: He’s a ghost he’s a ghost he’s an ******* ghost. He does the same things as all the other ******* ghosts he calls himself a ghost what more proof do you want it isn’t exactly a mystery
Roswell’s Child (OP): the topic guys mutant or cryptid
West of West: JFC [EDITED BY MOD] you call ME crazy and THIS is what your posting?
West of West: Also, stop trying to make amigos happen just call us Amity Parkers like everyone else.

Valorous1: Don’t be stupid, he’s just doing a bit to get you back for the name thief thing ghosts don’t use computers
Thecooltwin: @Valorous1 do you not remember technus? And the robot guy?
Phantom (MOD): Why would I joke about this? I thought the name thief thing was a joke. I mean, I share this account with a human and they're the one that's usually on, because I’m a ghost, but like.
Phantom (MOD): I'm actively giving them permission to use my name so they aren't a thief. And I'm not apple I don't try to copyright random words.
Valorous1: Are you telling me you aren’t [EDITED BY MOD]
Phantom (MOD): NO REAL HUMAN NAMES.
Tubalover: Oh my god is this real

I almost threw my headphones in excitement after reading the tags
ANYWAY I love the idea of all these stuffy scholars, and randos who end up famous way after death, going feral over getting THEIR TURN on the computer
They are still at it when Danny wakes up, so he begs the league to set up a place where these historians can all publish on their own computers (I’m assuming the reason why they took over fentonworks instead of just his pc is cause the realms don’t get internet).
Like once the whole GIW and Anti-Ecto-Laws are taken care of the league procures a warehouse and bunches of computers as well as set up a website (before the Wikipedia mods declare war) to post ALL of their works.
Science and history will definitely have lots of changes as well as theology considering I highly doubt the only religious character who’s posting is Jesus (I’m talking both mythological scholars and some mythological beings)
Man a lot of the corrupt politicians and vatacan members and others will all be PISSED at being outed like this, cause ghosts are now widely considered real and they’d know what happened a hell of a lot better than any scholars since they both saw the original event and WERE THE ONES WHO YOU MISTRANSLATED TO FURTHER YOUR OWN GOALS
Like the ghostly scholars are feral mostly due to the need to correct the falsehoods written in their name. Their pride won’t allow for someone to twist or change WHAT THEY FUCKING SAID IN THE FIRST PLACE. Some will be mad at all the terror caused in their name (Jesus would have a lot to say about the whole of Bible Belt Christians claiming he was a “genuine white American”)
Danny has unknowingly unleashed pandemonium, you bet technus is long gone cause he knew what he was doing.
Danny does not care in the slightest about said chaos, he just wants to sleep
You know what would be funny?
If the downfall of the GIW and other anti-Ecto acts and organizations? Came about because of some long dead scholars pathological need to Be Right.
How? Would this work, you may ask? Oh, easily!
WIKIPEDIA.
Somebody is WRONG about FACTS. And that can not stand! You see, they were told... well, more OVERHEARD then anything else (during their annual and ongoing debate about EVERYTHING) from that...? Techmus? Fellow? Whomever he was.
They HEARD, there has been a MARVELOUS advancement in the realm of the Living! A collective knowledge repository! Imagine the possibilities! They must see it at ONCE!
So they harrass Danny about it. Obviously.
He finally caves. And, to prevent them going Wrath Of The Old Academic or something, shows them JUST technical papers sites and Wikipedia etc. That should fix things, right? They should be HAPPY, now, RIGHT?
WRONG.
These so called "Facts" are INCORRECT! I was THERE! We did not do THAT! Slander! Outrage! I shall BURN THEIR HOUSE DOW-!
Ooooookay, hold up! OR? We could EDIT the page? See that button? Push that.
They blink. Push up their spectacles. Squint at the screens more closely. Ah. So there IS! Their mistake! How silly, quite embassies. Now then... *furiously begins typing*
And? You obviously can just? Make random edits. Even if you seem to be correct. ESPECIALLY with out any sources. And no one will accept "I was There" as a source. We are discussing Pompeii. And a spcertain historically significant volcanic incident. NO YOU WERE NOT.
Yet? No matter HOW had the moderators try? They for some reason can not BLOCK this deluge of edits. It's unending. And not even a united front. As they edit each other's edits.
AND on top of THAT? Random papers are showing up in official journals. Ones that were NOT put there by the journal's staff. About alchemy or frogs or rebuttals to people no one has even HEARD off.
Obviously, it's? Kind of a Big Thing in the scientific and academic community. Everyone is talking about it and confused. Every Hero with a scientific job. Oracle, with her job at a LIBRARY. Anyone connected to them they ask to look into this. It keeps spreading.
Especially when the hackers FAIL to stop it.
Imagine Danny's horror. Just... IMAGINE it. He goes to bed. The old fogies content to quietly argue and merrily type away, certain he's distracted them. Harmless he thinks. Contained, he believes.
They blow up the internet. Bring the JUSTICE LEAGUE to his city.
He has to explain himself to BATMAN.
He's gonna cry. Stop laughing Tucker, this is absolutely a threat. He is GOING to cry on you. (T^T )

The Other Side
Phic Phight Oneshot for Kiinotasha and KC: (AU) Born a halfa and raised in the Ghost Zone by his mother, Danny struggles with his human identity when a permanent man made portal appears in the Ghost Zone.
On AO3 and FFN
-------------------
Danny never questioned his life until that man made portal spawned. He never forgot when he first saw it six years ago while playing with Youngblood.
Naturally, they were playing aliens and spacemen, Danny's favorite. Earlier in the play session, they had found it, and it was deemed part of their spaceship. It was just a metal outline, an octagon. Thick enough that they could sit, and they pretended that the limited space was the entrance. Obviously on the left side was space, and the right side was their ship. Eventually their moms called them home, and during dinner when asked about his day, he told his mom about it.
She frowned, and she asked him for more details. Having played on it all day, he described it perfectly. His mom paled, and she forbid him from going there again, but she didn't expand on why.
He saw no reason to be afraid. It was just a metal shape. There were far more dangerous places in the Ghost Zone. So the next day, he told Youngblood about his mom's weird reaction. His mom had reacted the same, but didn't say why. His dad explained that it was dangerous, but not what about it was dangerous. Danny didn't have a dad, but he was sure that if he did, he probably would have said the same thing. But neither child could get it. What was dangerous about a shape?
So they just played with it again the next day, and they lied to their moms about what they did.
Two years later, another ghost had join to make them a trio. Her name was Box Lunch, and she was honestly a lot of fun. But she was still a girl, and they didn't tell her about their secret fun location until they were sure she didn't have cooties. When they showed her, she instantly knew what it was.
"That's a ghost portal!" she exclaimed. Youngblood and Danny thought she was stupid. Ghost portals didn't stay anywhere permanently. They opened and closed at random, when the human world and Ghost Zone would temporarily merge and allow for a rip to tear. But it always mended back together quickly.
"No it's not," Youngblood scowled. Box Lunch made a face at him.
"Yeah-huh!" she insisted. "My mommy and daddy get into the human world all the time! She said some people there have been trying to make a permanent portal to here!"
"Nu-uh!" Youngblood argued. "My dad said that humans wouldn't do that, they're more afraid of us than we are of them!"
"Yeah-huh!" Box Lunch said more forcefully. "My parents were human once, they said that people constantly wanna hunt us in the human world! And that they're coming here!"
"If they're afraid of us, then why come here?" Youngblood challenged.
"What else would it be?" Box Lunch asked, crossing her arms.
"It's a weirdo ghost's lair!"
And as they bickered back and forth, Danny had remained quiet. He didn't know how to feel about any of this. His friends often forgot that Danny wasn't just a ghost. He was also human.
Not that he was a ghost who was once human, that died. He was both, and he always had been. Born that way, according to his mom, because his dad was human. Danny didn't know too much about him, and he never really thought to ask.
He knew that his name was Jack, and how he looked like. His mom had hung a photo of him in his room so that he'd know; blue eyes, black hair, with a square jaw and in a distinctive orange jumpsuit. The orange suit always reminded him of the blue one his mom wore underneath a lab coat. She said he looked just like his dad when he was in his human form, and he could absolutely see it. Though as a ghost he had white hair that he seemingly inherited from nobody, with his mom's light blue skin and yellow-green eyes. As a ghost, he matched with a black jumpsuit, though as a human, he preferred regular clothes.
Most ghosts had learned of Danny's true nature early on as the news slowly spread when he was born. They loved him and accepted him as one of them. He could go out into the Zone as a human, but it always felt weird. So he was always a ghost.
That night, as he got tucked in for bed, he decided to bring the metallic object up again.
"Box Lunch said that the big metal shape is a permanent ghost portal," he blurted out. His mom stared at him with wide yellow eyes, and so he knew that Box Lunch was actually right. "Is it?"
She sighed, sitting on the edge of his bed.
"I believe so," she confirmed. Danny sat up.
"Is that why you don't want me going near it?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied. Danny cocked his head curiously.
"But if I'm also human, wouldn't they be okay with me?" he wondered. His mom paused for a long, long time. "I'm also one of them."
"I don't know, honey," she admitted. He could tell that she did know. She kissed his forehead. "I'll talk to you about it when you're a little bit older, okay?"
"Promise?"
"I promise. Now good night, sweetie."
It was four more years before it really became relevant again. He had essentially forgotten about the unoperational portal as homeschooling, other friends, and general undead life had continued on for him and his mom.
Youngblood didn't age, since he was once human and died, and so as Danny got older, they hung out less. While Box Lunch, a born ghost, grew, he became distant from her too for unrelated reasons. Danny wasn't alone, however. For a while, he hung out with other ghosts who had died young before he met his best friend. He was a bit older than him when he had died, sixteen to his fourteen, but Johnny 13 (and his shadow) and him had almost instantly become friends and hung out nearly every day. Often his girlfriend joined them too. His mom also allowed him to keep a newly dead dog that had followed him home, that alternated from a puppy to a large hulking beast of a monster dog. Danny named him Cujo.
Ghost Writer provided lessons in the arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays for him and a few other younger ghosts, which did include Johnny and Kitty. On the other days, his mom homeschooled him in her passion: the sciences. His favorite memories were of him and his mother in her lab, doing home experiments and building a wide variety of things.
She indulged in whatever nonsense he wanted to build, which included but wasn't limited to: rock cannon, small spaceships, figuring out how they could grow potatoes on the moon like the man in the martian book did, using ecto energy to cook poptarts.
Often her friend, Technus, but better known to Danny as Uncle Nico, came by to do more of the tech-based stuff. Danny believed that Uncle Nico could do anything with technology. He was one of the ghosts that often went through the natural portals, and whenever he came back, he had something for Danny. Typically game consoles and games, but sometimes fun little useless knick knacks that Danny treasured deeply. He fixed those game consoles many times, and also showed him how to download and install cheats and mods to make them more fun.
And after a morning full of science or the arts, Danny would eat lunch then rush off to play with his friends, Cujo always on his heels.
Looking back, he never did much as a human. He had to resort to his human side to rest, or would default to it if he fell asleep. It felt weird being in human form amongst ghosts, and so he was just always a ghost. He never thought much about it, and nobody ever asked him to be a human around them. It was just how things were.
On the day he'd never forget, it was just him and Johnny. His girlfriend had opted not to come. Danny couldn't remember the original topic, but it made him remember the portal. As soon as he told Johnny about it, the two idly scratching Cujo as the dog slept in between them in puppy form, the ghost's eyes lit up excitedly.
"Dude! We have to check it out!" Johnny insisted.
"I dunno," Danny hesitated. "My mom said that I should stay away."
"Come on, it'll be sick! I've always wanted to go back to the human world," Johnny begged. "And you've never even been there, despite being half-human!"
Danny paused. Well, when you put it like that...
"Okay!" he agreed. He floated up from his seat a bit so he could untangle his legs to stand. Cujo immediately got up from his spot laying near them, tail wagging excitedly. "Let's go! I think I still know where it is!"
It had changed since he last saw it. It now had huge yellow and black doors in place of the previous blank space, and it seemed somehow bigger than he remembered it years ago. But it was unmistakably the man made portal.
Even now, he didn't get what would be too scary about it that his mom would encourage him to stay far away. It was just a door.
"This is so fucking cool," Johnny whispered as he touched the door. "Imagine...no more trying to hunt down a portal. We can just come and go as we please...seeing our lost loved ones...seeing my mom again…It's been so long...I dunno if she'd even remember me..."
Danny didn't say anything, but he did begin to think and truly wonder for the first time what his dad was like. His mom never talked about him, and he never really asked. He and his mom were happy, and he also had Uncle Nico. Was his dad kind? Did he also like science? Why wasn't he here? Did his dad even know about him?
"Do you think we can open it?" Danny asked. Cujo licked his fingers, and Danny scratched his head. Johnny glanced over his shoulder at him.
"I dunno," he admitted. His hand turned into a fist and he knocked on the door. "It seems really solid. I don't think we can just break it or something."
"Hm. Lemme see," Danny mused. He came closer, and he put his hand on the door. It was cold, and Johnny was right; it was metallic, just like the outer edge he used to play on, and it would not break easily. His finger traced the middle line of the two doors. "Hm. Maybe we can pry the door open."
"The humans made this," Johnny spoke. Danny stared at him. No shit. "No, no, I mean. Maybe you should do something to it as a human." Danny thought on this, and he shrugged. Couldn't hurt.
His transformation rings came and went, leaving him in his human state. He was just in a t-shirt and jeans today, and he stayed floating near the portal.
His hand had barely touched the portal when it opened for him.
Danny gasped in shock, jerking his hand back as it opened. Johnny had also jumped, going backwards a bit, and Cujo's fur went up as he barked. It fully opened, and he couldn't see anything but the green ooze. This wasn't anything like Uncle Nico had mentioned natural portals being like. They normally acted like a window you could see through. But it was an unnatural portal made by man.
"Maybe this isn't such a-" Johnny began, but Danny had already stepped through.
There was a weird in between area that shined bright blue that he never heard Uncle Nico describe. But in this in between, he could see exactly what the ghost had mentioned. He knew he was still in the Zone, but he could look out the portal into the human world like a window.
A man in an orange jumpsuit, with black hair that was graying, was sitting in a room that reminded him very much of his mom's lab. He was staring at the portal in confusion, likely because it had randomly opened, and Danny instantly knew who it was. He had no idea if his dad could see him, but he found himself rushing backwards, and back into the Zone.
The second he returned, he became a ghost again, and he silently began to fly away as he tried to process. Johnny asked no questions, only following, Cujo following them both.
That night, at dinner, he finally asked.
"What was dad like?"
His mom stared at him for a moment.
"Well, he was very sweet," she said slowly. "Very bubbly personality. Always went out of his way to help his friends." She smiled softly as she talked about him. "Adored fudge."
"Did he like science?" Danny wondered. His mom gave a short laugh.
"Oh boy he adored it. Not the best at it, but he had a lot of enthusiasm," he replied. "We used to do experiments together all the time."
Danny stared down at his food as he thought. He looked up to her, and he could tell that she already knew what he was going to ask.
"How come I never met him?" he wondered. She sighed.
"...He doesn't like ghosts," she replied. "Aspiring ghost hunter when I met him, actually. I was alive then. Had the same ambitions." At his shocked look, she laughed again. "I know, ironic. We had dated for about two years officially. But then...I died. It was winter, and I was driving late at night during a snowstorm. My car slid off the road, and into a river. And I died from my injuries. I found that I could disguise myself as human, and I was in denial. So I just...continued on."
"...Why?" he asked. His mom shrugged in defeat.
"I guess I just didn't want to admit that it was over. I hadn't done everything I wanted to do yet. I was still in college, and I felt like my life had been forcibly finished before it had even truly started," she admitted. "Jack had proposed, but I had declined. I was too afraid to tell him. He began pursuing ghost hunting more seriously as a profession and building weapons and portals. I found out I was having you, and he was so excited to be a dad. I began getting scared. I didn't know how long I could continue the lie. I didn't know how it all would affect you. Then the police found my car and body, and I knew I couldn't avoid the inevitable any longer. So I left. I had no clue how to face him, or even how safe you might be if we talked. Especially after you were born, and I realized that you were half ghost."
The more she talked, she more somber she became. By the end, she was sniffling a little. Guilt began to wash over him.
"Have you ever talked to him again? Like after I was born?" he wondered. She shook her head no. "How come you've never taken me to the human world?"
"I had considered it. But it's too dangerous," she explained. "Humans aren't like ghosts. If they knew that you were also ghost...you wouldn't wanna find out what happens."
"...Do you regret any of it?" Do you regret me?
She smiled softly despite the conversation.
"You were the best thing to ever happen to me," she told him. "I may have been very anxious about being alone, and how you may turn out despite it all. But you were born healthy and perfect in every way. You're absolutely the light of my afterlife."
Danny smiled back, feeling some reassurance. His mom stood up, leaning over to peck his forehead before picking up her plate. He heard Cujo scramble out from under the table, ears up in excitement.
"I think I'll finish this later," she told him. "I'm not too hungry tonight." She glanced down at the dog. "This isn't for you."
Cujo whined, following her as she put her plate in the microwave. Danny nodded, sparing a small smile to Cujo and ushering for him to come over. He slipped him a piece of chicken as his mom left.
Later that night, Danny couldn't sleep. He was too busy sorting out his rushing thoughts. He was of course still him. Nothing really changed, but there was this new growing emptiness. Danny was still Danny, but there was a whole other side to him that knew nothing about. It began to eat at him more and more. Who was this human side besides just human Danny who lived in the Ghost Zone? He didn't know.
He now wished that his mom had taken him to the human world before so that he could know. She did say that there was a risk in the humans knowing he was also a ghost, which he didn't get. The ghosts accepted him as one of their own, so why wouldn't the humans? He didn't get humans at all. And he needed to know more about them. He was one of them.
By breakfast, his mind was made up.
After an unusually boring lesson with Ghost Writer together, Danny immediately went to Johnny once their small class of sorts were dismissed.
"I have to go back." Danny couldn't breath for a moment. "I have to see what it's like. Like you said, I'm also human, and I've never been there. All my unlife, I've been a ghost, here, in the Ghost Zone. My dad's in the human world. And I need to know what it's like to be human. What it means. So I can maybe meet him one day."
Johnny nodded.
"I think I get it," he said slowly. "I'll come with you. Keep you company. I think I could pass for human pretty well, even if I have to say that I have some kind of sickly disease that keeps me pale."
Danny grinned.
"Thanks," he replied. "Come on."
It took no time at all to find the portal. Danny stared up at it, his breath once more stolen as he tried to think of a reason why he shouldn't go through it.
Nothing came to mind.
"It's okay if you don't wanna," Johnny said. Danny shook his head no.
"I have to do this," he replied. "I need to do this."
Johnny patted his back, and that was all the subconscious encouragement Danny needed to turn human and press his hand to the door. Once more, it opened. The fact that he's even able to open it made him know that this was something he was meant to do. He once again stepped through with Johnny right behind him.

Round 1 Match 26: @ghostgothgeek vs. @five-rivers
Writer: @dannyphandump
“Wi-fi network has been recalibrated,” Vic said as she reentered the VIP box.
“So that’s why my PDA stopped working,” Tucker mumbled, poking at the device.  Tali hadn’t been aware that the real world technology could connect with the ghostly wi-fi at all, but apparently Tucker wasn’t about to get left without Internet access, even in a different dimension.
“Would you rather have that or have Technus hack you?”  Tali asked, slurping a peppermint hot chocolate.  Reyna had delivered drinks and Rosie’s non-dairy cheesy bread between the rounds, which seemed to satisfy Sam’s desire for vegan options.
“Psh.  Technus couldn’t hack me if he tried.  He’s still running Windows XP.”
“Says the one who still owns a PDA in the year 2020,” Vic pointed out.
“A highly modded, graphically-enhanced, *blah blah blah tech mumble no one cares* PDA.”
“Whatever,” Tali said, not bothering to pretend that they understood.  “Match 26: @ghostgothgeek vs. @five-rivers! PHIGHT!”
They two adult ghosts had been flew into the arena.  Steph (ghostgothgeek) had a sack slung over her shoulder and was trailed by a blue spectral wolf.  Mar (five-rivers) was hovering with the aid of her cardigan, which had split into six patterned wings that fluttered like a mesmerizing dance.
Steph shook off the wings’ thrall, though, and signalled for her wolf to attack.
“Nice try.  Get ‘em, Lie!”  Mar grinned, and a small but big-eyed ghost with moth antennae leapt off her shoulder.
“Is this gonna be like a Pokemon battle?”  Tucker asked, sitting on the edge of his seat.
Sam hushed him, probably tired of him taking up the limited amount of speaking lines in the drabble.
It was, however, not like a pokemon battle.  Tali was pretty sure that eating your opponent wasn’t allowed in those.
The wolf burped loudly.  Mar’s eye twitched.
“Lie…”
“That bug thing is gonna respawn, right?”  Tucker showed a surprising amount of concern.  Maybe he still thought ghosts were like Pokemon.
“Uh… yeah, sure, let’s go with that.”  Tali shrugged.  Ghost-animal biology and regeneration was not one of their areas of expertise.
“Sorry, Mar.”  Steph winced.  “Can I offer you some glitter in these trying times?”
Mar nodded, and Steph sprinkled a handful of glitter from her sack on her head.
Tali hummed The Circle of Life into the kazoo.  “Five-rivers is unable to battle!  Ghostgothgeek wins!”

Brain is still going on about this. Adding outfits, combat styles, and a couple of drabbles for funsies.
Val as a red lantern: Val has next to no change in her standard outfit, to the point where I'd honestly be surprised if her outfit (and possibly character too) wasn't actually inspired to a notable extent by the red lanterns. She's already got the exact right color scheme of black on red, with a space for an emblem in the right spot on her chest and everything. The only mod to her suit is to add the emblem of the corps to it, but I am going to argue that Val wouldn't accept being forced to wear a badge on her chest for an organization she didn't choose to join; she does NOT seem like the type to just tale something like that, and Technus did help her get super user permissions... So instead of wearing the logo of the red lanterns on her chest, I'm going to say she integrates it more subtly into her helmet, she's willing to acknowledge where she's drawing extra power from, but never proclaim herself a member of the corps, especially not once she learns how every member besides the leader, Atrocitus, is essentially turned into a mindless rage zombie serving only the whims of the leader.
What does change significantly is Vals combat style as a result of her new toys. For one thing, she can fly now, she doesn't exactly *need* a hoverboard. Is she going to stop using it? Oh hell no! That's an iconic part of the Red Huntress look she's not changing that, but she'll change the board a little bit. How? Well, and this may be a bit of a deep cut, but does anyone remember Toa Lihkan?
For those who don't remember or never had the joy of playing with Bionicles, Lihkan was an old one with a hoverboard that split into two massive swords. Of course Val would love having massive fuck off greatswords on principle, but it's also practical; constructs are great and all, but so is redundancy, especially when you're dealing with something as unpredictable as ghosts can be. I can also see her installing an extending handle on the back of her board to turn it into a gigantic great axe when she needs just that little bit more stopping power.
Despite how fun the sword board is though, let's not forget how powerful and flexible a lantern ring is. Normal red lanterns apparently don't get the standard hard light constructs associated with lantern rings, but again, super user permissions here. Val can summon guns, cannons, and what have you out of shaped ectoplasm, although she'll primarily use it for three things. One, she'll summon blasters to supplement her barrage attacks. Two, she'll throw up shields around civilians, and even property when she can; her dad lost her job because of collateral property damage, if she can avoid putting someone else through that she's going to. And C, she came up with a new finisher/area clearing move...
See, I mentioned that normal red lanterns can't do hard light, what they get instead is their blood replaced with corrosive boiling red plasma-like fluid (which, just gonna point out, that sounds a lot like Ecto that's turned red because it's saturated with rage) that will burn through their enemies of they get splashed, this makes red lanterns terrifying melee fighters, since any injury is more dangerous to the foe if their "blood" splash makes contact. For Val, I'm envisioning her being able to imbue this blazing hot and corrosive property onto her constructs, something she takes fierce joy in doing as a finisher by summoning thousands of tiny brightly glowing red blade constructs and blasts them outwards shredding everything in the vicinity. With those who know her she calls it her "Thousand black rose petals dragon twister" and if you are also weeb enough to get all three references you might just be able to convince her to be friends instead of killing you for knowing her secret.
Tucker as an Orange lantern: For the most part, Tuck is always going to be most comfortable as the guy in the chair, and the Orange lantern and ring are satisfied by this since it also includes him constantly searching for and obtaining new knowledge; thirst for knowledge counts as avarice. So he becomes a little more of a support in the day to day, with an outfit that does have armor elements but is more focused around the detailed integrated ops display visor and multiple monitors with tactile input via what looks like orange Nintendo Power Gloves, but he's also one of the team's heavy hitters when the chips really have to go down. Why? Well remember, the orange lantern corps only ever has one wielder at a time because they go into a avaristic frenzy and take each other's rings and power... oh, and also souls. Yeah. Souls. Which the wielder of the ring can then summon as constructs.
Honestly, this has a lot of overlap to PD, with his army of thralls. And, well, Danny may have inherited them when he accidentally took the crown, but we both know that boy would hate having thralls, even if he couldn't release them for reasons ranging from esoteric legalese to not wanting people who would sell their souls for power like that running free. So he gives em to Tuck instead. His best bud used to be a Pharaoh, and already has an army in the hundreds, what's a few quintillion more (there's a lot of lives in the multiverse, ok) for Tucker to have at his command?
Um... a lot, Danny. That's a lot. Especially When Tucker can comfortably equip each and every one with an orange lantern ring as they're now an extension of himself. So Tucker may tend towards a non-combatant role, but when he feels the need to he will go full IRL-RTS on you and zerg rush your ass, except each and every one of his zerg also wield a lantern ring, one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, so like a zerg rush where every single zergling was a max level primal Kerrigan.
Yeah, remember what I said about all the gods not being enough to help you if you so much as look at his PDA? Starting to see why?
Dan the Yellow lantern: Unlike the first two, for Dan it's the fighting style that doesn't change much. He's always been a calculated brawler through and through, not to mention part Danny with the neverending grab-bag of powers that entails, what's a few more that largely amount to a more solid and complex shaping of ecto that he could already do.
What does change is his look. Not so much his outfit (although that does get some nice gold and glowing highlights as well as the emblem for the corps as the clasps for his cape on each shoulder) but more him in some subtle Eldritch ways. At first, nothing would seem different, which is intentional on his part, but the longer you look at him the more you start to notice things are not normal. Like, how many eyes did he have again? Or limbs for that matter? Can those actually be called limbs? Did he just rearrange the holes on his face? Or is his normal and yours was rearranged and you forgot about it? Oh shit, you're pretty sure not-limbs aren't supposed to bend like that? Are they even bending? Is the space bending? Is he smiling, with those many many "mouths?" All over his "body?" Is that blood or brain matter trickling out of your "nose?" From trying to comprehend what you're looking at?
Yeah, usually he'll just beat up his opponent, but when Dan really doesn't like someone there's a lot of horrified screaming and then they tend to be eerily quiet for as long as the life support can keep them alive.
Danny the Green Lantern: Much like his big brother Dan, Danny's suit stays pretty much the same. He gets some green highlights, but eschews the logo on the chest because hell no is he trading *his emblem* for the logo of a cop, especially once he learns about even a few of the more unsavory parts of the guardians' history now associated with that logo. What he does do is incorporate the glow that lantern rings give with his own ghostly aura, surrounding himself with an aurora effect, and adding a solid green circlet inset with tiny shards of space in place of the floating rime-bound cracks in reality which previously made up his crown.
His fighting style doesn't undergo any major changes either, save also adding more and stronger barriers and the occasional construct weapons just like Val. It is worth noting that Him and Val team up as the team's front line now. Danny will leverage his insane durability and use his quips to draw ALL THE AGRO, while Val dishes out the DPS and prevents escape using her greater comfort with ranged attacks. It also helps that Danny can throw up a barrier to contain her blade storm to a desired area in an emergency. Is this hinting at GrayGhost? ...maybe. But I still don't have time to write it, so...
Jazz the blue lantern: Jazz is one of the only ones to actually take on a uniform which would normally go with her ring. There was a piece of fan art floating around of Jazz as a fully outfitted blue lantern which was actually what kicked off this whole part of my continuing brain rot, but I can't find it atm. If I see it again, or if anyone else has it, let's try to get it attached to this so the artist can get their well deserved credit.
As to fighting, Jazz, like most blue lanterns, tends more towards a support role, but I also say let's give our girl a supercharged Fenton Peeler. Does the blue ring amplify the green Ecto her parents primarily work with? Absolutely! And I also can't imagine a world where her dad didn't tinker with his little princess's favorite weapon over time to give it more features. At the moment it has the normal blast, charged blasts, FlashBang shot, shotgun mode, sniper mode, Gooooooop (crowd control via ectoplasmic glue, and also a Ben 10 reference), various elemental attacks, a lightsaber bayonet, a healing beam like the TF2 medic, and *Three* bottle openers. Danny probably still has her best for sheer number of tricks he can pull out his ghostly butt, but Jazz is giving him a run for his money.
And then there's her scariest ability, so power that she's only ever used it once, and only told Dan, who now has a *very* healthy respect for his older sister. First thing that needs to be understood for this is that all the Amity lanterns have been so saturated with Ecto/emotional energy due to their proximity to Danny and the portal and all their various misadventures over the past five years or so since the portal opened, that they had to master it or be destroyed by it, and they had to do so without the aid of a ring to offload a lot of the focus and strain on to. The ring just gave them a tip tier tool to focus and amplify the control over ectoplasm/emotional energy which they'd already mastered. Each of them is at least as skilled with their ring as the top echelons of their respective corps, and Jazz, is no exception. And while the blue lanterns are all about being hope amidst the atrocities inflicted by others, they've never needed punishments for terrors inflicted by themselves.
So when Sinestro sent his men, they didn't find themselves a fight. And Dan rushed in to find only Jazz. Jazz standing, tired, but satisfied she did her duty. Bent in weariness from a mind filled with memory of what she'd just done, in room filled with husks devoid of hope...
It's honestly a good thing Dan was the one who knew to go first since his yellow ring gave him a heads up that there were other yellow rings approaching. His ability to break people with fear is similar enough that he can understand the nuance of Jazz's ability to literally and permanently suck all of the hope out of an enemy. He doesn't judge her for it either, both because him, and because he knows she was defending herself in an ambush. It means she has someone to talk to about this ability which reminds her uncomfortably of spectra but several orders of magnitude worse. Honestly, it makes for a great bonding experience for the two, with Jazz getting to be the one being taken care of for once in her life, and Dan getting to both ensure he doesn't lose her again to this and to be the bringer of peace instead of fear and destruction.
Sam the Indigo tribe member: Indigo ring-bearers' outfits are typically canonically described as looking hand made; does anyone here seriously believe that Samantha "ultra-recyclo-vegitarian" Manson *doesn't* make her own clothes already? Maybe she adds a *little* more indigo as underlayers to her usual black. And sure, underlayering indigo into her hair goes well with her look already, so she'll do that. What's that you say? She can get her corps emblem tattooed and her parents won't be able to do a damn thing about it because they're "blue-line" folks and they think the indigo tribe are also space cops because they work with the green lanterns and sam never bothered to correct them? And the indigo tribe scout would be happy to do it for her as she's already proven she's one of the strongest members in the corps, and clearly embodies their ideal with her activism even before she got the ring? She wants TWENTY!
The real highlight of Sam's outfit is her staff though. All of the indigo lanterns have a staff they wield. And for this headcanon, Sam is also a bit of a weeb (as are Danny and Tucker, and Jazz to a lesser extent, it just didn't come up in their sections) so she leans into it when making her staff. She GROWS (because the indigo ring awakens the dormant Ecto left after the undergrowth incident) a wooden copy of Hagoromo Ōtsusuki's staff with one key added detail. Each of the six rings on one end contain one of the other lantern corps emblems, with the central ring being the emblem of the indigo tribe with a glowing indigo orb in the center.
As to fighting, Sam really isn't a combat oriented member in this tale; her role is more of an ambassador. Her team makes sure there's a world at the end of the day, and she'll work through even the darkest of night to make sure their sacrifices mean something by using the chances they give to make the world better one speech or reformed villain or assassinated power hungry asshole at a time... ok, so maybe she does do combat, just usually not the same flashy large scale combat as her teammates.
What really gets interesting is when some of those power hungry assholes start catching on to their suddenly increased risk of fatal nightshade poisoning and start hiring some surprisingly skilled bodyguards. Note that I said skilled, not effective. These ninja looking fuckers aren't able to *stop* Sam, but they actually slowed her down by several whole seconds, she's impressed. What organization did the asshole brag he'd hired them from before she tore through them again?
And now Sam is head of the league of assassins. Ras is very much no longer the Demon's head, as it's quite a difficult title to hold when one doesn't have a head of their own anymore, and she's probably banging Talia on the side.
And then there's the Violet Lanterns: Which yeah, I'm going with Vlad, Jack, and Maddie all got a violet ring, because I choose VIOLENCE. They don't though, they're all lovers, not fighters, now. Yes there are multiple ways of interpreting that statement. Yes they're all correct.
The throuple's antics aside though, they mostly work in the lab now. They provide all kinds of tools and weapons for their kids and occasionally the hero community at large as an expression of their love.
And as a last note, I'll leave you with this. For anyone who's seen the Violet lantern corps (also called the star sapphires) uniform, well, you know what it looks like. For anyone else, go look that up and come back.
Did you look it up?
Good.
Now.
Live with the mental image of the throuple in that and constantly flirting with each other.
I warned you I chose the violent option for the violet lanterns.
Due to his unrelenting determination to keep his town safe, Danny is bestowed a green lantern ring. Which on one hand: Yay! He gets to explore space full time. But on the other hand: Ew! he's a space cop now.
He had to rectify this immediately or he would never hear the end of it from his ghost friends. Or his regular friends for that matter. Sayyy, it'd be a shame if he.... bent a few rules. Maybe even broke some of them every now and again. And it would surely be a tragedy if say.... random pranks started happening around Oa?

Note
Hi I just had a question about the ectoberhaunt. So the 150 words after the Read more or 10 lines/chunks of text. Is that basically a hard word limit? If so that what ballpark are we looking at for summary/preview before hand?
hello!
the word/line limit is for if you need a readmore or not. the 150 words/10 lines is an example of when you should include a readmore.
there's 0 limit to how much you are allowed to write, we just ask that longer fics get posted under a readmore with a summary of what to expect before clicking it.
if long fics do not get a readmore, we simply will not reblog it.
i hope this answers your questions!
