@jegulus-microfic / sleep / 301 words / a self indulgent bday fic for myself / thank you for everything mwuah @star4daisy
“Can you just keep talking to me?” Regulus asked softly. He had been on the phone with James for an hour. His birthday was tomorrow, and James’ flight had been delayed, meaning he wouldn't make it back in time.
“I’ll do anything you want, love.”
They whispered sweet nothings to each other for a few more minutes before Regulus drifted off to sleep. He was certain he had fallen asleep while James was still talking to him—his voice was his favorite lullaby.
He woke up to the sound of his doorbell ringing. Regulus glanced at his watch and saw it was still early morning; Sirius wasn't supposed to come over until brunch, so it couldn't be him. Still half-asleep, he didn't bother putting on a shirt and headed downstairs in just his pajama bottoms.
“Happy Birthday, love.” It was James.
There stood James, holding a bouquet of flowers, a balloon with a silly pun about his age, and his suitcase. Regulus launched himself at his boyfriend, and James dropped everything to wrap his arms around his waist.
“Oh, baby, the balloo—” James tried to reach for it, but Regulus quickly snatched it back, insisting his hand return to squeezing him.
“It’s okay. You’re here.” Regulus pulled back slightly to look at James. “You’re not a dream.” He smiled.
“There was something I needed to do in person,” James murmured against Regulus’ lips before finally leaning in to kiss him tenderly. Regulus deepened the kiss, his hands tugging at James’ hair. James lifted Regulus and pressed him against the wall, slowly moving his kisses from Regulus’ lips to his jaw, and then to his neck. “We’ll get the flowers later; I have another birthday gift I’d like to give you first.”
No dream would ever compare.
“I’d like that, baby.”

'Ten should've treated Martha better by acknowledging time travelling as a Black person and not comparing her to Rose' and 'Ten and Martha were an interesting duo by having a doctor x doctor pairing an had some great character moments' and 'RTD's handling of race in s3 was dookie' and 'Martha had great character traits and many Black fans felt seen by her' need to coexist. Because I feel like bc of the way things went down in s3 people think Martha never wanted to travel with Ten AT ALL or she would never wanna travel in space or time ever again. All this 'she hates the Doctor' 'she wouldn't wanna come back' whoa hold on now...

until i recently read posts on here about how there is an inherent queerness to the doctor and rose's relationship in how it's unspoken and filled with yearning that i'd never really considered that element, despite knowing for ages that RTD is gay but. man. it's just reframed a lot of the series for me, like the idea that you have this lonely man who's just watched his people die and is self-destructive and misanthropic and traumatised and he can love again and he wants to but it has so many risks.
but especially S3 and how it adds even more weight to the doctor's grieving widower status. how he tells martha that he and rose were together but martha refers to rose as a friend to tallulah; the fact that he can only say they were together once she is gone; how the only other person that both can feel how he feels but also understands the depth of his feelings is jack, a queer man himself. and I've been thinking to myself lately oh, it's ok, the doctor and rose probably accidentally got married on at least one planet or something but also the point is that there was no official title that could convey to people the extent that they meant to each other, that the doctor can really only tell donna that rose was his friend even though it is so wholly inadequate and she comes to see that by the end of the episode (and martha too of course). how people who saw the doctor and rose together assumed they were a couple, like on krop tor, but once there's no more physical evidence of the relationship it becomes more vague (and simultaneously clearer).
anyway something about how christopher eccleston said he based his portrayal of nine on RTD and something about RTD saying that his husband is "in every good man i write now" and how the doctor and ruby seeing each other in the club mimics his first meeting with his husband aka the one moment he would use a time machine to go back to hmmm
