HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Polly Bergen, Ingmar Bergman, my sister Jennie Blair, Bebe Buell, Bob Casale, John A. Chapman, Gerald Ford, Lee Friedlander, Rosie Grier, Maulana Karenga, Angélique Kidjo, Gustav Klimt, Jamie Johnson, Paul McCartney’s 1986 “Press” single, Tommy Mottola, Peta Murgatroyd, singer-songwriter Bret Putnam, Adam Quinn, Phil Reeder, Del Reeves, Dan Reynolds (Imagine Dragons), Dale Robertson, Jerry Rubin, Dirty Dave Rudabaugh, Matthew Seligman, Stan Shaw, Harry Dean Stanton, Rubberlegs Williams, and the social activist and iconic figure in American folk music, Woody Guthrie. The legendary singer-songwriter gave us The Dust Bowl Ballads and “This Land is Your Land.” He was a major influence on Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Sixto Rodriguez, Pete Seeger, and many others. He also fathered a musical family with son Arlo and grandchildren Gabe and Nora.
Woody gave us the song, “This Land is Your Land”—a land for all people. He taught people how to view America and social issues through the lens of a song, saying, "I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim or too ugly or too this or too that."
Here’s my take of Woody’s autobiographical song “Oklahoma Hills,” co-written with his cousin Jack Guthrie (a cowboy star who went #1 with this in 1945). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aYTpJETVcQ Meanwhile, HB Woody, and thank you for creating “the machine that kills fascists.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert part 2
Colbert: Welcome back. Now to explain why Madonna is not the last name on Phillip's sick list: Phillip and Cole's Variety Team.
PBC: Madonna is not the last person on Phillip's sick list. Each of us do have some criticism of the beloved and prolific entertainer. First of all, Phillip is too sick to leave home these days, but he did say the following:
Phillip: The most objectionable thing about Miss Ciccone was her first choice of a husband, a man who continues to show himself a poor representative of mankind.
PBC: Rupert, you're next.
Rupert: (On a projection screen) Cheerio, this is Phillip's cousin Rupert in England. I had no problem at all with Madonna. After all, compared to some of the singers in the UK she held herself in an almost respectable way. Then she married a British subject as her second husband and moved here. That put her into the same septic tank so many of our own singer bred in and she began to smell like them. Not only that, but she eventually divorced her British husband and didn't even move away! Folks, especially women all over the globe, if you marry an Englishman stay with him for life or move away!
Ford: Thank you Rupert. I'm Ford, a former judge in Tennessee and, as a judge in Tennessee I have no jurisdiction, nor do I have authority over persons accused of crimes in other jurisdictions. However without exception I can not watch any crime related movies without passing sentence according to the laws of Tennessee. On at least 2 occasions I have watched movies in which Madonna played characters who confessed to crimes. For those I have no choice but to sentence her in absentia to a period of not less than 3 years in prison in any Tennessee jurisdiction and I certainly do not approve of that.
Cole: (On the projection screen) I'm Cole from Tennessee, a cousin of Ford. I don't care much about crimes or who she marries. I figger I never had a chance. What bothers me about Madonna is her name. Hell, she ain't never been no parygon of virtue, and I don't know why the Catholics changed the name of the virgin Mary to Madonna. I ain't Catholic, so I figger that's their business. Still, a young slutty woman who goes into singin' can call herself anythin' she wants. Why mess up people by takin' a name that about half the world thinks is sumfin holy. If I go to see a concert with someone named Madonna I expect hymns and arias, not erotic gyratin'. So for about 30 years I was mad about that. Then I found out Madonna is the name her parents gave her! Now I'm even madder. Y'all's supposed to keep the name yer parents give yer, no matter how much yer hate it.
PBC: Thank you Cole. It's my turn now. My biggest objection to Madonna was the way she dressed, notably those ugly lopsided outfits in that first movie she did. I was a young man when she became famous and couldn't look at the screen because the clothes were such a turnoff, the complete opposite of the reason I wanted to see it in the first place. You're next, Brad.
Brad: (On the projection screen) I'm Brad, Cole's cousin and Ford's younger brother. I'm with ya Phil about the clothes, especially showin' off her bras all the time. She became famous just about the time gals in Tennessee started learnin' to go braless and boy did that send ever'thin in the wrong direction. Anyway my biggest problem with Madonna is her songs. We like ballads down here in the south, and even if she figgered she had to sing kinda fast on accounta the songs weren't any good she coulda found a way to make 'em into a little story. Did that feller open his heart? Who was that girl? Did she keep the baby? Come on, gal, tell us. It only takes one line!
Norbert: I guess I'm l-l-l-ast heh heh heh heh heh again heh heh. m-m-m-my-my-my-my p-p-p-pr-problem with Madonna, es-es-es-especially. wh-wh-wh-wh-when I was young heh heh heh heh heh heh is is-is-is that I have...as...as-asthma heh heh heh heh heh heh heh and -and-and wh-wh-when I s-saw her first vi-vi-videos I-I-I c-c-c-...heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
(Norbert falls down. Curtain closes.)
Colbert: we'll be right back.

I was 20 blocks away from our house. Nobody believed me. They thought I was trying to cover for my father. But what I saw that night was real. As real as the man that ripped down that metal door with his bare hands. That's why I look into cases like this. The ones nobody believes are possible. Maybe if I can just make sense of one, I might be able to find out who really killed my mother. And free my dad. I am sorry I lied to you. Better find another plus one." "He did lie about who he really was." "And what do we do every day?"

"Good evening National City, it's Cat Grant. Yes, I've been away for a while but I'm back. Now I can imagine that you're feeling afraid and feeling like your world is spinning out of control but, believe me, you have power and right now you have a job to do: resist. Resist these invaders with everything you've got. They come with empty promises and closed fists. They promise to make our world great again and yet they know nothing about the people that make this world great. They think they can con us and if that doesn't work, what, they're going to beat us into submission? They have no idea what they're up against. Aliens and humans, we need to band together and we need to stand up and fight back. Everyone needs to be a superhero. Everyone needs to get up and say, 'Not in my house.' Let's prove to these thugs that we're strong and we're united and we're not going to be conquered. And Tiara Woman, if you and your minions happen to be listening, you have come to the wrong town. Yeah, I'm Cat Grant, not going anywhere."
"Now see, the thing that make women strong is that we have the guts to be vulnerable. We have the ability to feel the depths of our emotion and we know that we will walk through it to the other side. And by the way, you have accomplished great things this year. Your articles: 'Slaver's Moon', 'Alien Registry', 'Alien Fight Club'. I mean, it's all very powerful. And your prose, your prose is not bad. I mean it's not great, but it's not bad."
 5.      Reset (Arrow 8x6)
Tumblr media
166, Written by: Onalee Hunter Hughes, Maya Houston, Directed by: David Ramsey
"Oliver, I've seen one daughter die and come back to life twice. I've seen another come from some other Earth. I've seen a guy in red run so fast he can reverse time. This is not exactly outside the norm, is it? Also, I'm done learning my lesson about doubting you because that always bites me in the ass."
4.      Fast Enough (The Flash 1x23)
Tumblr media
23, Written By: Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Gabrielle Stanton, Directed By: Dermott Downs

Tumblr media
63, Written By: Aaron Helbing, Todd Helbing, Greg Berlani, Andrew Kreisberg, Directed By: Dermott Daniels Downs

 1.      The One Where We‘re trapped on TV (Legends of Tomorrow 5x13)

CHAPTER TEN
CW// Under age drinking, and drugs
Tumblr media
Sitting in the back of Sam's shitty little Ford Ka was an interesting experience. They were parked in Brair's garage after driving around for who-knows-how-long. Brook got to see some of the girls favorite stores, and she made mental note to check them out.
Despite the fruity smell the girls had, they ended up pulling out a bottle of vodka. Brook had denied it the first time around, but eventually took a few swigs straight from the bottle as the night progressed. The conversation was light, and the radio was set to a low enough volume to where it didnt inturrupt conversation, but you could still clearly hear what was being said, and played.
It was nice. "So tell me. How...did you even end up with..this?" The brunette motioned, the few sips of alcohol having a deliberate effect on her tolerance; affecting her speech. "Please. Don't even with that! I ended up perfectly fine, thank you" Brair shot back, a smug look on her face. "NO no no! NOT like that. I mean, I had to shimmy my ass halfway down a building!"
Brooklyn raised her arm to show the scratches which had slowly begun to redden. It was comparable to a cat scratch, visually, and it didn't hurt. It was just enough to show her escapades of the night.
"Well, I am a bit older than you.." She trailed off, bottle in hand. "It's not like they really condone it, but they get that its apart of the whole attachment process..." Brair finished her sentence with the cadence of mocking and slight understanding. It was like she knew she needed to mesh with it, but didn't like it.
"What do you mean older than me? It's not like there's a huge difference between us, anyway."
"She's off her rocker" Jennie popped in, grabbing the bottle from Brair. "It's not about age, its about the fact that, she" the artificially blonde girl took a swig between her words "does what she wants, when she wants." "It's apart of the process!!" Brair bit back "You wouldn't get it! You got fostered out as a baby. Shove off" Brooklyn let out a small laugh before reaching her hand out, getting the bottle in return. she took a swig before looking towards sam. "i'm good, thanks. I have to drive."
Brook shrugged and took another drink before handing the bottle back.
"Okay, you hog! Tell us something" Jennie borderline shouted. Brook couldn't tell if it was the drink, or if she was always like this.
Sam spoke before Brook could answer "Her new grandma is in town! isn't that annoying? It's like when Angela randomly came over unannounced!"
"Yeah...annoying is one way to put it..........who's Angela?" Brook responded, throwing her head back. She was positioned backward with her back against the dashboard, and her knee's touching the back of the car seat.
"UHG! My bitch step-mum! She and my dad are an actual pain in the ass! If you're going to fight over where you work every week, do something about it!" Brair shot back, grabbing the bottle and taking a worryingly-long swig.
"I need a fag." Jennie pipped out. "OH! I think Brook can one-up you on that!" Sam retorted back, turning and grabbing a pink lighter and a pipe from the middle console of the car. "Oh, yeah!" Brook shot out, quickly fumbling for her purse. She unzipped it and rummaged for her little baggie before handing it to Sam to pack.
"Holy shit, you weren't kidding earlier when you said we weren't on the same level!" Brair shouted, clapping her hands together. "Well, it's not like either of the Guys knows!" Brook quickly clarified, waving her hands in front of the girls. "I think they'd actually kill me.."
"The guys? Who's that?"
"Dan and Phil, the guys who adopted me" Brook responded. There was a slight tension before the car went silent.
"You're joshing, right?" Jennie finally responded, earning a snicker from Sam. "What? Why would I just believe that?"
"Why wouldn't you? She's got no reason to lie about it." Sam responded rather matter-of-factly.
"You're actually having a laugh, right? How do you take things at face value like that?"
"Cause I talked to amber! I was trying to avoid bringing up amber! Jesus christ!" There was another moment of silence as sam continued to grind up the weed with her hands before Brair finally spoke. "Just leave it be, Jennie, she's not worth it.."
Brooklyn was...confused mainly, but tense. Amber had hurt her, yeah, but what had she done to Jennie. She had A LOT of good times with Amber, and she couldn't imagine a world where she would intentionally hurt anybody.
"I know she's not worth it! She's a stuck-up cow!"
"Woah, okay, what the fuck did Amber do to you?" Brooklyn finally spoke, genuine confusion in her voice. Whatever tension existed was now gone, soon replaced by a wave of unanimous anger. "She stole my fucking boyfriend! Straight up slept with him while I was dating him! Then she goes off and cliques up with that Isabelle bitch!" "Woah, wait- Isabella? You're fucking kidding me!" Brooklyn responded, fully engaged. "You know her?" "She broke my ribs!" Brook lifted her shirt, showing off her now faded bruising. "She's actually fucking evil and Amber has been aware of this since the second she got there!" She finished.
"I'm honestly not surprised amber buddied up with her! It seems exactly in her repertoire!" She finally spouted off, taking a drink from the almost-empty bottle. "What do you mean exactly? Amber wasn't exactly evil when I knew her....we were actually kind of friends."
"Friends? Yeah, that's what I thought too, and then she slept with my boyfriend! she always does this! she leeches onto you to get whatever fulfillment she needs and then she ghosts you the second you disadvantage her!" Brair was visibly drunk at this point, and slurring her words.
"I mean.." Brook began to speak before looking down at her phone, and unlocking it. She clicked open hers and Amber's messages and paused. "She kinda did do that.. up until I got adopted. I was really worried she was going to be upset or resentful of me, but she was just really...excited? I thought it was nice at the time but in hindsight it's kind of...weird." "I got the bowl ready!" Sam interrupted, the mood of the conversation soon shifting. "Let's get cross-baited already!" Brair added, grabbing the pipe and lighter.
"You need help" Jennie quipped while reaching into the backpack, pulling out another bottle and storing the empty one in its place.
"Shut up"
The sound of the lighter clicking and the scent of lemon and pine replaced the smell of alcohol in the car as Brair took a toke and passed the pipe and lighter to Brooklyn.
Taking the tiny glassware and lighting up the lighter, Brooklyn took her own toke off of the pipe. It burnt her lungs, and she let out a hearty cough before passing the pipe to Jennie.
"This is fun!" Sam finally replied, the smoke in the car starting to create a thin haze across the four girls' field of view. "Why don't we hang out more"
"Because you're a bum who doesn't leave your bedroom"
"Brair! I'm going to cut you off if you don't watch your mouth!" Jennie shot back while lightly shoving her counterpart "You're no better, don't make me"
"Oh whatever!" Brair responded, jokingly waving her hands as she grabbed the bottle from Jennie.
Brook lamented on the information she had gained tonight. She reached her hand out for the pipe again and continued to smoke off of it while listening to the girls talk. It was starting to get late, and sam had already started to put up the garage door up and Brair and Jennie had packed away their bottles. "You're going to need these" Sam spoke, handing brook a bottle of eye drop and a bottle of perfume. "Obviously, don't mix them up." "what's it for?" She replied, uncapping the perfume and spritzing it on. "The eyedrops, i mean"
"They take away the redness in your eyes."
There was a silent agreement as Brook handed the perfume to the back seat and uncapped the eyedrops, flooding her eyes and swapping it between the girls.
before they knew it, the other two got out of the car, and sam and Brooklyn had pulled back onto the roadways. They were driving through the night town, the sky was a dark murky color, and the street lights littered the pavements on the side of the road, illuminating the car as they passed by. There was a comfortability in the silence, and it's something Brook wasn't used to. Silence generally made her uncomfortable. She would always run from it or try to find a way to fill it.
But something about this was nice. Maybe it was the light buzz she had going, or maybe it was the high. This was cut relatively short by a text message from Dan. "Please be home by 3"
She felt a bit guilty, he didn't seem upset or her absence. He clearly had to have figured she went out through the fire escape, and she knew she'd have to have a conversation about it later.
She stared out the window and watched as the unfamiliar slowly became familiar houses again, and eventually pulled up to the spot she was picked up at originally. Brooklyn hopped out of the car and sprayed some extra perfume on herself before saying her goodbyes.

'...Iconic episode Blink, helmed by Steven Moffat, The Waters of Mars, written by Phil Ford, and Midnight, written by returning showrunner Russell T Davies, are just some of the times Doctor Who has turned a little terrifying. While fans love the show all the more for how those stories are handled, it seems the writers are no different...
Phil Ford, who wrote the terrifying David Tennant episode The Waters of Mars, recalled: "I remember, I grew up with Jon Pertwee predominantly and, looking back, I remember stories like The Green Death being really quite scary for me as a kid.
"I'm not so sure that it's moved away from that so much, I have no doubt that there will be another Doctor Who story coming down the road that will be every bit as scary, if not more than The Waters of Mars..."
Ford went on to say: "The Waters of Mars, from my point of view, was always going to be scary because that's what I like to do. I think the team around Doctor Who then and now is just so good at what it does, I think we all have confidence in each other in knowing just how far we can go.
"And certainly, whenever I went too far, I knew Russell was going to pull me up on something... my memory of Russell is not so much hauling me back on The Waters of Mars, but on other episodes, him pushing me harder to make things even scarier and even bleaker in some cases! Which is just wonderful, because he has this amazing opinion – and talent to back it up – that really there is no story you can't tell for kids. It's just a question of how you tell that story."
Meanwhile, Keith Temple, who wrote the David Tennant story Planet of the Ood, said: "Thank goodness we're past the days of Mary Whitehouse! There are other sorts of censorship restrictions we have to take into account but I don't think there are any topics that Doctor Who can't handle, as long as it's done well. Really, Doctor Who, if you look at every story, there's so much death and mayhem in it!
"People maybe don't realise how much there is in the way of death. Doctor Who is a family show, there are a lot of young people who watch it, and children - you have to be careful as a writer and a programme maker that you address all those ages within the episode and that makes it quite a difficult show but as long as you don't patronise children, you can do anything, I think. There are no barriers to what you can do."'

Groundhog day - Thursday, February 2nd 2023
The date of the celebration (the second day of February) coincides
with medieval feast of Candlemas,
and its pre-Christian predecessor,
Imbolc, a day also rich in folklore.
An old Scottish prophecy foretells
sunny weather on Candlemas
means a long winter.
The tradition is recounted in this poem:
As the light grows longer The cold grows stronger If Candlemas be fair and bright Winter will have another flight If Candlemas be cloud and snow Winter will be gone and not come again A farmer should on Candlemas day Have half his corn and half his hay On Candlemas day if thorns hang a drop You can be sure of a good pea crop.
Punxsutawney Phil is the focal point
of oldest and largest annual
Groundhog Day celebration,
held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania,
every year since 1886.
Members of Phil’s “Inner Circle”
claim he is now 137 years old, (rumor circulates this one groundhog lived
to make weather prognostications
since 1886, sustained by drinks
of "groundhog punch"
or "elixir of life" administered
at annual Groundhog
Picnic in the fall),
hence thanks to said magical
life-extending serum
they feed him each year—
and his predictions
one hundred percent accurate.
Groundhog day - Thursday, February 2nd 2023
Coincides with astronomy's first cross-quarter day,
marking the midpoint between
winter solstice and spring (vernal) equinox,
which will occur at 5:24 PM on
in Northern Hemisphere
Eastern Standard Time
Monday, March 20, 2023
Small consolation old man winter
spans fewest days
of all four seasons,
especially when
A powerful nor'easter
will develop in western Atlantic
beginning late Friday,
(February third two thousand and twenty three)
bringing heavy snow,
strong winds and
coastal flooding to parts
of the East Coast,
but there remains
a larger than usual amount
of uncertainty in forecast
for this storm.
Yours truly remembers
when spry Jack (hoar) Frost
(just yea high -
both arms stretched to sky)
came early, left late and bossed
zealous vernal equinox
rattling barenaked lady branches
obviously inapropos
to budding friendship.
Now (courtesy global warming/ climate change)
mother nature experiences feeling strange
within valleys and atop many mountain range,
wherein goods traded away on stock exchange.
Fortunate concerning yours truly
versus daring to brave
inclement treacherous weather
getting stranded in the process
(possibly becoming gratefully dead)
risking life and limb venturing forth
amidst near whiteout conditions
creating debacle perilous and grave
shoveling snow lest he get buried
he can remain holed up
(in tandem with the missus)
snug as a bug in his mancave.
While nestled inside warm abode for awhile
(at least until temperature upwards doth dial
safely ensconced against elements (of style),
I stopped at metaphoric woods edge
trekking until... for no rhyme nor reason
the poetic metered equivalent,
viz another mile
then stopped for coffee break
burst of energy gave me cause to smile
fording imponderable stream of consciousness
impossible (airy) mission to dodge regarding
aforesaid daunting task to craft worthwhile
poetic endeavor to entertain anonymous readers
gleaning how one bard (with his shaky spear)
evokes fiction being snowbound
as if cast adrift within Siberian exile.
Straightaway I continue writing askew
aware how literary trademark modality
characteristic of one hapless wordsmith
unwittingly indelibly embedded
analous to mine Caucasian
versus swarthy melanin hue
man automatically confers eligibility granting
innumerable known mighty opportunities
(privileged skin color - how unfair)
bigoted prejudices shade those
either hashtagged as black,
naturally copper toned gentile and/or Jew.

#JOSH WISE ALL STAR RACR DRIVERS#
#JOSH WISE ALL STAR RACR SERIES#
It’s one of those things where you didn’t know if people were just telling you they were voting for you or how many times they were voting, so I thought it was definitely a possibility.”Įven if Wise doesn’t come home with the $1 million prize for finishing first in Saturday night’s race, he already considers himself a winner. There’s 110 million people that regularly use Reddit, and there was a large portion of them that knew about this and were a part of it, I felt like. Not only that, but Patrick herself has close to 100 more points than Wise, making this whole scenario seem even more unlikely.īut the power of the Internet is strong, my friends. Wise has started 10 of the series’ 11 races thus far in 2014 and stands 36th in points, even trailing a cast of rookies such as Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Cole Whitt and Alex Bowman. It’s a lot of young kids and people from around the world and I’ve had a chance to interact with a lot of them and there’s a lot of people that never watched a NASCAR race who’ve now watched several, so this is a pretty cool deal.” “Something I wanted to say, too, was that this is kind of a big deal for our sport, I felt like. I really don’t have an answer (why the Reddit community picked me) it’s just one of those things, you know? If you asked me two months ago, there’s just no way I would’ve thought this was possible. “I’m just super thankful to be a part of it, really. “Everybody knows about them raising money to sponsor us at Talladega and then it was on to the Fan Vote,” Wise said. 98 All-Star Weekend ride - this time a Chevrolet.Īnd in a true underdog - or should that be under doge? - story, the same group of fans had a heavy influence on his case for the Sprint Fan Vote, as Wise overtook the Stewart-Haas Racing driver. 98 Ford in the Aaron’s 400 at Talladega Superspeedway. In March, the Reddit community raised 67.8 million Dogecoins - a cryptocurrency that equates to about $55,000 - to help Wise put his No. “Really, it just started with a 16-year-old kid posting something on about some good runs that we’ve had and for whatever reason this huge, awesome community just got behind us.” “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it,” Wise said in his post-race news conference.
#JOSH WISE ALL STAR RACR DRIVERS#
Thank you everybody watching.”īut how did it happen, exactly? How did Wise, a relatively low-profile driver, unseat one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers in reigning winner Danica Patrick? ET, FS1) via the Sprint Fan Vote and a large contingent of Redditors who pitched in a few different ways.
#JOSH WISE ALL STAR RACR SERIES#
Phil Parsons Racing’s unsung internet hero Josh Wise, who has 79 Sprint Cup Series starts and a career-best finish of 19th under his belt, has earned a berth into Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race (9 p.m.

Ask and ye shall receive @fantasy-the-final-frontier
I have to confess though, never saw Agent of Shield until like a few hours ago. I do know (most) of their names and I'm aware of the canon (someone said it's not canon but I think MCU counts it. If they can count Daredevil, then they should count AoS. Pretty sure that's how it works.) and the over arching plots were for each season. Leverage on the other hand, I have way more knowledge about, but since we're only focusing on one character, I'll try to keep it brief. No guarantees.
Quick synopsis for both though:
Agent of SHIELD follows a group of super secret spy agents take on world ending threats that don't require superhumans to assist to ensure world peace.
Leverage follows a group of thieves take on corrupt businessmen and turn them into two buck chuck.
Both have found family tropes, socially awkward dads, and chaotic children.
That aside, I'm gonna do a basic run down of both Nate Ford and Phil Coulson, compare a little between the two, and then parallel their core philosophies and backgrounds. We'll see if they're really all that similar. My money is that they aren't. You can decide for yourself if they're at all similar.
Feedback is welcome, and if you want a different kind of meta for me to do, Please request! I love meta analysis and I get bored. Very bored.
So, to start, Agent of Shield is a show that starts a few months after the first Avengers movie in 2012. Phil Coulson had originally died a few months earlier during the first Avengers movie by the hands of none other than Loki, the God of Mischief/Frost Giant/Prince of Asgard. It is revealed during the first episode that he is alive and well thanks to Project Tahiti -or as Coulson calls it, "Tahiti - its a magical place" through the introduction of Wade. During his introduction, we know that he is a hero and admired by many, but very few in the public eye actually know who he is or are aware that he is, in fact, alive. Phil Coulson leads a "rag tag team" within SHIELD, aka Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division - a secret government agency, to take on missions monitoring people who could potentially end the world as they know it, and deal with the threat in any way SHIELD sees fit. Coulson is a strong believer in doing the right thing, even if it means making hard decisions, and believes in SHIELD's mission to protect the world from any and all dangers. He is passionate, quick witted, empathetic, kind and caring, and occasionally socially awkward. He's self aware of who he is, his strengths and weaknesses, and has an awareness about others that makes him a good and efficient leader to his team. Throughout the five seasons he's there (the seventh one is... iffy. I don't want to count it because at that point, his conscience is in a robot (LMD) and it feels... off, but you can count it if you want to), we see him stay true to himself, and to who he is as a person during the development of his character.
Nathan Ford on the other hand is introduced as a drunk bastard who used to work as an insurance investigator for IYS - mostly art thefts, and is hired to go steal back airplane designs from Pierson, a private corpration whose main competitor is Victor Dubenich. Dubenich is an unassuming, panicked businessman who approaches Nate with a job offer to lead a team of thieves to steal back the designs stolen from Dubenich's company. It's revealed that Nate is familiar with each thief introduced in the episode, but he is hesitant about the job. It isn't until he's offered a chance for vengeance against his old employer for his son's death that he accepts. He and his team are then double crossed by Dubenich and Nate forms a revenge plan, running a con on him. At the end of the episode, he reluctantly becomes the leader/mastermind to the band of thieves he's worked with after successfully pulling off 32.2 million dollars on their revenge heist. The show then ensues a modern day Robin Hood episodic plot for five seasons (erm six now with a seventh coming up later in the year). Nate Ford is characterized as a self-serving man who is, in essence, an asshole. He's not sociable, he's not charming or affectionate, and he's a cynic for all to see. He's clever and cunning, has a knack for psychological manipulation on anyone who crosses him, and is always ten steps ahead of everyone else. You can literally never win against him because he has the mental fortitude to never be wrong.
Tldr: Phil Coulson, soft nerdy boy. Nathan Ford, a raccoon from a landfill that just never got cleaned out.
Now that you get a picture of who these characters are, you're gonna be asking yourself "well, wait a minute, these are two completely opposite characterizations, they can't possibly be similar to each other." Au contrare mi amigos. It is precisely this opposition that makes them similar. (They're also both Catholic which is the funniest thing I found out through my search)
Nathan Ford will do whatever it takes to make sure corporations who screwed over the "little people" (a title coined by many of the rich), get what they deserve. Often times this means bankrupting them, humiliating them, and putting them in jail. Phil Coulson will do whatever it takes to do what is right and protect SHIELD's good name. Both characters actions are done with a conviction in believing that they are doing the right thing. (I know, I know, Nate Ford isn't about doing the Right Thing, but self satisfaction, but he does do it for the right reasons.) They are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and are more than willing to put their lives on the line to accomplish it.
Another similarity I've found is that Nate and Phil started from places that didn't have them in leadership positions and there were specific reasons for it. If we take in the MCU movies into account for Phil's character, then we know that Phil was introduced as a grunt for SHIELD. Nathan was an insurance investigator, but he never actually picked the jobs. People told him what to do and he followed it to the ends of the earth. Phil was a grunt because he didn't show any sign of wanting anything more than to be a representative of SHIELD. Nate was a grunt because he never cared about becoming an executive and filling out the paperwork. He was all about the thrill of the chase and the challenge that came with it.
The way they get put into leadership positions are quite different, but they do their jobs very well. As the mastermind, Nate plans for everything, and tells his team what to do and where they have to go, even if it means pushing his team to the very edge of danger. While Phil does do a lot of planning and much of the direction, he's more of a take action kind of guy. He is always in the middle of a conflict, and he doesn't endanger his teammates unless he absolutely has to. Though there are moments where Phil can be seen being ruthless and cold, he isn't forcing his teams into situations that can have a plan B or that can be done by him instead of the others.
As leaders, both clearly have different methods, but in terms of responsibility, I think they both are very good at balancing out skill levels among their teammates. Nate can read people and knows what his team can and cannot do, but pushes them to try anyways. Due to this push, his team are capable of putting forth the effort that is required for their jobs to be done and learn a new skill in the process. (Hardison is the best example of this) On the other hand, Phil is empathetic to his team and understands what his team is capable of. They are highly trained professionals, but he understands that there are limits and ensures he, or backup, is always there to make sure the job is a success. I realize that Phil actually shoulders quite a lot throughout Agent of Shield, and sometimes it's hard for him to handle the responsibilities he's given in perfect balance.
Phil and Nate have similar grievances and identity crises in the middle of their arcs. While Phil grieves and laments on having missed a chance for a family and the loss of many of his friends and coworkers to HYDRA(HIVE?), Nate grieves the loss of his son. One grieves much healthier than the other one does. At least partly. Phil's sorrow isn't really touched upon and it's kind of brushed off, but it is important, and it is there. Nate's is the barebones of the show, and why he continues to be a criminal for five seasons.
Identity crises whew boy. That's a really long one. Phil was supposed to be dead like, several times. Apparently eight or so. He literally barely felt human anymore and I think it got to him. Like it really got to him that he just dies and comes back when he shouldn't. He's Phil Coulson, but also not. He loses his footing for the second half of the first season and regains it through the third season. Then loses it again by getting his revenge on Wade and kills him. This haunts and distresses him because he has never, ever done anything for the sake of revenge before and that is just something he has never experienced and it turns his whole world upside down. Look, he was SHIELD's star hero, okay? The golden boy, the heart and soul, and the successor to Director Fury. Yea, he's killed before, but he's never done it unnecessarily, and that's what gets to him. He killed for all the wrong reasons and it ruins his psyche for a good while and it eats at him, knowing that he can never go back to undo it all.
Nathan Ford has an identity crises for all of season two due to being unable to come to terms with himself of being very good at crime while also being very good at winning. He doesn't know how to stop and it is killing him. There is an immense pressure on his own psyche when it comes to being a thief and a criminal just like his dad and it pains him to know that he is exactly like him in almost every way that matters. When Sophie leaves it makes him worse because, well, he essentially becomes a monster after that. And whose to stop him? Right? He keeps winning, and nobody can outdo him, and no matter the dangers, he always comes out on top, right? Until he doesn't. And he falls down to earth the same way Icarus did when his waxed wings couldn't support him anymore.
Both of their identities are questioned, their philosophies thrown aside, and are reborn anew (Phil literally getting resurrected), by the end of their middle arcs.
Their guilt though. That's the one I have to like really touch upon. Because I think that as much good as they both do for the world (Debatable for Nate), and doing things that help others, they suffer from this deep knowledge that nothing they do is enough to fix the world they live in. While Phil is an optimistic kind of guy, he knows that despite everything he is capable of, he can't do it all, and it really makes him feel like he's letting people down because of that. He knows he has a team that can help him with that problem, but he still feels the guilt of the choices he could've made that he didn't to help others or the choices he made that didn't help others. Like with Wade or John Garrett (I butchered something here ssshh). When he knows he's going to die really soon, he tries his best not to make it everyone else's problem because he feels guilty for not being able to move forward with everyone else. But ultimately, him pushing them away isn't enough for them to leave him alone.
Nate feels so much guilt and weight of being the asshole to everyone and getting away with it that it impacts his psyche in season three to four still. He knows that he could be a cruel monster if he stepped over the edge just a little more and it is killing him. There is so much of his soul that is being eaten away when he does a grift or plans a con on another schmuck CEO that it suffocates him and he is unable to get out of it. The team do their best to try and alleviate it and cheer him up, but there's only so much they can do for him because they don't have the same feelings he does unlike the SHIELD team. Nate's team like what they do, so they can't really understand why Nate feels what he does, but they do their best and that's enough.
I think both of them as mentors to their teams are very similar. They give good advice when necessary, aside from social relationships, and don't hover too much when it comes to being a guide to the younger ones. Phil and Nate play the roles as Team Dad, and are often the ones most of the younger teammates aspire towards. Nate's affection isn't as apparent because he doesn't seem to be that kind of guy, but we know Phil is very much a caring Dad and makes Dad jokes to make people feel a little better.
As for fan reception, I'm not sure what that means, but I think Nathan Ford is received with begrudging enthusiasm while Phil Coulson is met with awe and adoration. Like, alright Nate, you can come into the house, but you're on really thin ice man whereas Coulson is met with acceptance and mutual respect.
Coulson is our hero that we all love and adore versus Nathan Ford the anti-hero whom we treat like the grumpy cat that he is.
Whose more badass? Coulson. Whose more cruel? Nate.
Personalities wise, I think that while both are socially awkward, and can be very clever and quick witted, they wouldn't really see eye to eye with each other. Coulson believes in the good in people and keeps trying to improve and be better than he was before whereas Nate... doesn't. He believes that people need to change the world so that the world can be better, but I don't think he really sees much good in people unless they show it in their actions. People follow Coulson because he's the unsung hero in the MCU, and a friendly, mild mannered man who just wants to make the world a better place. People follow Nate because it's not just his good judgement and clever plans that make the most fun for their jobs, they follow him because of his iron strength to keep trying to do good when all the world wants to do is be cruel and unkind.
P.S
Phil Coulson is aligned as Neutral Good.
Nathan Ford is aligned with Chaotic Neutral.
Fight me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Polly Bergen, Ingmar Bergman, my sister Jennie, Bebe Buell, Bob Casale, John A.
Here’s my take of Woody’s autobiographical song “Oklahoma Hills,” co-written with his cousin Jack Guthrie (a cowboy star who went #1 with this in 1945). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aYTpJETVcQ Meanwhile, HB Woody, and thank you for creating “the machine that kills fascists.” .

Scott Shannon in the Morning part 2
Shannon: Welcome back. Scott Shannon here speaking with our guest Phil Cole and Phillip and Cole's Variety Team. Phil, we have one more legal matter I'd like you to comment on before we switch to more pleasant topics. In Colorado and Maine, so far, maybe other states, they are blocking former President Trump from the ballot. The Supreme Court is going to hear the case next week I believe. Do you have any thoughts on that?
PBC: For that I defer to Ford, our legal and Supreme Court expert.
Ford: Hello, Ford here. I'm a recently retired judge from Tennessee, criminal division.
Shannon: So what is going on with the effort to remove Trump from the ballot?
Ford: If the court decides that he must be permitted on all ballots provided he has enough valid signatures and pays the fees they will be clearing him of the charges pending regarding the January 6 insurrection.
Shannon: Really?
Ford: Those charges will have to be dropped.
Shannon: My my, and what if it goes the other way?
Ford: The court has 2 options. The first option is to decide that all states have the right to exclude people from any ballot.
Shannon: Indiscriminately?
Ford: The decision should read that these are local matters and the state judges have the final word. In other words, don't bother us again about this.
Shannon: Wow! And the other option?
Ford: The other option is to uphold the decision to keep him off the ballot in Colorado and anywhere else. That will be the same as declaring that that man is guilty. At that point the trial for insurrection should go directly to the sentencing phase.
Shannon: Guilty of insurrection.
Ford: Just like Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and the other heroes of the Confederacy. By the way, I reckon it is much better for everyone if they decide that in May or June instead of December after he wins the election.
Shannon: Indeed..that's a...grim picture of the future of the country. Thank you Ford, for your great insight...well, folks, those of you who were listening to our show 8 years ago when Phil was on every week might recall a song he wrote and sang here. It's exclusive to our station. At the time we had a spirited race going, and on the Democratic side Senator Bernie Sanders was facing an uphill battle against Hillary Clinton. One day in April Phil sang this song. I'm going to play it now. It's called Don't give up on us, Bernie.
