Unfortunately our old fundraiser deleted after collecting 82457€ , but our ultimate goal was 150000€ , so I’m asking you to read the last update before start reading my words to understand everything ❤️ My name is Abdulla Daoud , I’m a 4th year medical student at Al-Azhar University Of Gaza , I have 7 sisters , four of them are married, and have their own families , one of my sisters and her family were lost in this war I’m fundraising for me and my family , to survive our souls , and catch up the remains of our lost dreams , we fully lost everything we own (homes, works, futures, souls and loved ones) We were briefly displaced from our home which is completely destroyed , and moved to more than 7 places . I was dreaming of being a doctor such as my father , and already finished 3 years of the journey , which costs me 15,000 dollar per year, As like as My sister , Menna Daoud , was dreaming of being an architecture , and since 7th of October our academic education is stopped for unknown period. My father is a doctor lost his clinic and lost his job as a lecturer in Al-Azhar University which is also destroyed. Black trans woman/singer-songwriter trying to sell my music to raise money for safer apartment

I'm a black transgender woman and singer-songwriter trying my best to promote and sell what I believe is the best song I've ever written, performed and recorded. I also mixed and mastered it myself. It's called "Be W/U" and I'm hoping to raise enough money to move into a safer apartment in a more trans-friendly area that's about 25 miles away. I've been alone for the past 4 years stemming from family rejection and I've just been displaced living in motels and hotels and once in a homeless shelter for trans women in Los Angeles. Last year I finally moved into my very first apartment and it's been very painful, to say the least. I've been harassed and bullied by the upstairs neighbors constantly and though I've complained to the landlord countless times, they've done absolutely nothing to help me. I've gotten chased out of the grocery store twice by transphobic lunatics and I had to quit my job after being attacked by a mother/daughter duo after correcting the mother, who intentionally kept misgendering me very sarcastically. I had to end up running in the back of the store and locking myself in the bathroom. To add insult to injury, my manager refused to ban them from coming back in the store. This area is not a trans-friendly area and my manager let me know just how much he cared by refusing to ban these people so they could have just came back in at any time for a round 2. This is not a trans friendly area and I was afraid to press charges. I'm already 3000 miles away from home and it's scary enough trying to just co-exist. I ended up quitting, scared to go back in the store. My manager just did not care about making sure his employee was safe. I was super offended when he told me he wasn't gonna ban them. It's been difficult to find another job and the past few interviews I had ended abruptly after they would inquire if I've used another name in the past 10 years. That would force me to have to reveal to them I had an old name but I now have a new legal name and gender change because I'm actually a transgender woman. That would cut the interviews short and I never received any call backs. The past few years have been painful, but God has kept me safe this whole time. My trans sister was murdered last August and I've still been trying to cope with that. She was the only friend I had. I was sexually assaulted and diagnosed with PTSD as a result and I've been trying to cope with that too. There are no trans support groups in this area and I'm beyond fed up with being here. It's been difficult finding another job so I figured I would try to see if I might can sell my song and raise the money to leave. It's a long shot but I need to raise $10,000 to move to a better area in this LGBT community not too far from here, get an apartment and pay at least 4 months rent in advance, which will give me plenty of time to acquire a job where I'm working around more people who can relate to me. I don't drink, smoke or do any drugs, I don't hang out and I never go outside after dark. I'm not sexually active in any kind of way and have no desire to be, so there's been nothing to "numb the pain" sort of speak. Holidays and birthdays have all been very lonely and depressing so I also plan to get a puppy and a cat so I won't be so alone. I'm sure that would do wonders to help my mental health. As far as donations I have a HUGE hangup about money (trauma you know how it goes). Any time someone sends me money I want to give them something in return, like it has to be transactional because I myself don't feel like I deserve it simply for existing and being likeable. I don't want nor do I enjoy receiving charity or hand outs.

There's people that have it worse than me that need it more. Also, the last time I had my info up someone tried to hack it so that was fun 🙃

I'm just disappointed in myself for not being better at this. Writing is something I enjoy but I'm very slow with getting to it and then sometimes have bursts of chapter after chapter, and i took on these donations/fic gifts when I was on an upswing.

Diabetes rant

Been awhile since I posted but I'm just really sick of having to pay x amount to live. I need to vent or the urge to off myself will win and i'm not going to let the assholes win. So ignore if you want I just want to vent. My bg is five hundred currently so yeah. I'm just kinda pissed.

Diabetics in America, type 1 and type 2 have to make do by buying insulin from other companies, paying out of pocket prices that can range from 200 to 1500 for a month supply. Relying on Diabetic Facebook support groups where other Diabetics donate extra supplies, copay cards that only work half the time, and fiancal assistance programs that you only qualify if you're in the lowest possible income bracket. This is the fault of Pharmacy benefit managers, insurance companies, the top three pharmaceutical companies, Eli Lily, sanofi and novonordisk that own the patents. Then all three blame each other for the high price, blame the pbms and insurance companies who into blame each other as well. Fun fact Eli Lily came out with a generic insulin. Insulin lispro it's basically humalog. Not that they have been advertising it, the bastards. I've been told at my pharmacy an out of pocket price of humalog is $546 for a month's supply of vials, what's is insulin lispro's out of pocket price for a month's supply? $180 per vial. Had anyone had any luck finding out what it cost the companies to make their analog insulin? I've been looking for that data for 8 years still haven't come across a legitimate source. I heard once from a novonordisk drug rep that Eli Lily makes one vat of insulin for $50 dollars. Lol representative was trying to make the other company look bad but they all do it. So you have insurances that pick which insulins get to be on their formulary. BCBS for example favors humalog. So good luck unless you're allergic to humalog they will deny any prior authorization for another fast acting. My BCBS ins doesn't care that fiasp and novolog work better for me. Now I'm using humalog u 200 which is working for now thank God. Let's now get started on Continuous Glucose monitors, dexcom g6, freestyle libre and guardian sensors.

Having a CGM literally saved my life, I have a 'good insurance plan' I have an 800 dollar deducible, 5000 out of pocket. Met my 800. Dollar ded at the first of the year. Wanna know how? I had to drop $1000 to pay for a 3 month supply of dexcom g6. So I met my deductible so now everything is great? Wrong! I still have to pay %20 coins. So if I want 3 month supply I have to pay $367 dollars of my portion. I don't know about most people but I find it difficult to come up with that sort of lump sum of cash. It's September and I'm only 2000 in on my 5000 out of pocket. Why because I don't go to the doctor unless I have no other choice. I have enough trouble just paying for my diabetic supplies let alone the copays, and remaining balance left over at the end of doc visits. Only doc I see regularly is my Endo. Then BCBS had the gall to keep making me use dme (durable medical equipment) companies that charge a hell of a lot more than pharmacy benefits do. Supposedly bcbs is going to let commerical insurance patients use pharmacy benefits in October so if you have BCBS and use a dexcom CGM have your doc or Endo send prescription to community Walgreens who also has a $120 coupon.

Freestyle libre is at least trying to do something, funnily enough because they market their CGM as a meter and for type two diabetes. Out of pocket price is 75 using e vouch for a month supply, sensors last 14 days, 1 hour warm up time, no alarms but they are working on it. You can use a smart phone and save some money by not getting a reader. Guardian don't know much about but I tried one and sensor died on day one. If the senors work then it does have some advantages. transmitter lasts a year and is rechargable, and you can restart sensor fairly easily.

Pumps Omni pod, tandem and Medtronic.

Gotta Omni pod hands down even though I got a tandem tslim x2 pump. Omni pod is tubeless, Omni pod pods can be potentially pharmacy benefits. So go omnipod also because you can hack the classic pump with the open aes algorithm and get a artifical pancreas because #we aren't waiting. FDA approval takes forever!

Good news on dexcom front, G7 supposedly will come out in end of 2020. It will last fifteen days, 1 hour wait time and transmitter is inside senors so you throw whole unit away. Why is it going to be less expensive? They want to market it towards type 2s.

Did you know you can restart dexcom g6 transmitters and senors. Well you can check out YouTube for fellow Diabetics' instructions. It will save you money and stick it to the assholes trying to monetize diabetes.

It sickens me that Sir Fredrick Banting and his cohorts sold the patent for insulin for a dollar each, total sale being $4 dollars to Ontario college. They sold it so it would be affordable and accessible for everyone.

Back in 1942 Eli Lily and two other companies got in trouble for price fixing insulin. What's the difference between then and now? The government actually did its job and stepped into to stop them.

Everyone who price gouges insulin and Cgms and pumps should be ashamed.

I'm sick of being taken advantage of for an autoimmune disease I don't have a choice in. I'm pissed. I want justice.

I want a healthcare system that won't bankrupt me. I want a system that actually focuses on preventive care and not being for profit. Fun fact our healthcare has not always been for profit. You can thank president Nixon for that.

Longer and more painful situation under the cut.....

But tbh, I had been thinking about setting up a donation pool in general with how bad things have been going. I already had patreons and felt hesitant to start one, but with my depression being so bad for so long and unmedicated, I’ve had a hard time keeping up with those and don’t feel I’ve really earned the money till I’ve finished what I owe... And I owe so much now that I can’t even try to take on commissions to make up for it.

I tried getting health insurance a while back to cover behavioral health bc that’s what I needed most to get me to work regularly again... but it turns out all the clinics for that out her suck ass apparently so I’m just wasting all my money and I feel like an idiot and now it’s just another thing to stress over... I feel dumb even admitting/explaining it but $400/mo for health insurance is something I can’t even afford and I need to fix that asap now bc I’m literally running out of money. Not to mention all the vet bills we had back in Feb when Birb’s health declined again and then even the budgie, who we both inevitably had to put down only weeks from each other... I never asked for help then tho I probably should have... We spent over $1k just in that month with trying to help them and then just for paying for euthanization and ashes... Also part of the reason I got so behind on work stuff. I’m still hardly coping (and actually tearing up just writing it out tbh).

Our living situation changed in the past year and I hardly said much online, but it’s just been Zuka and I mostly paying for the house bills since her family went to live in CA in an already furnished house for a year to do a job with someone. They had a good deal and took it, and while I’m glad to finally having the house to ourselves, it’s been hard doing everything and paying on bills more... And I feel horrible I can’t even help support Zuka more and myself bc of my health insurance bill that I couldn’t even use to help solve the real problem: my crippling depression that I’ve been dealing with horrifically already with the past 3 years (technically longer but it’s been so bad to the point where I wish I had disability for it bc I’m not working to make any money and I’ve been living off savings for that long and now I’m running totally dry). I currently have less than $1k in my bank account shared between my checking and savings... I have more in my paypal, but like I said, I don’t even count all of that yet until I finish my work owed in case of needed refunds.... After this next billing coming up in a few days for the end of the month I’m gonna have close to maybe $500 left.... My patreons have helped me survive scraping by just for this long at least but even that isn’t enough right now and things are dire. I’m really feeling fucked rn. Like I said... any bit helps. I could go into it more but honestly it’s just... I don’t wanna bother writing out more pathetic shit about myself and I’m sure nobody wants to bother reading it either and I don’t blame you... I get even more depressed just thinking about it. Everything has just plummeted and I’ve been wanting this year to be better and have been really trying but there’s only so much I can do without the proper care and medication I need.... I feel most of it is my fault and I’m just a useless piece of shit that’s continuing to be a burden but that’s what severe depression does.... It’s been a while since I’ve even wanted to consider suicide, but boy does not existing or being conscious at all sound great...

‘We Are All Accumulating Mountains of Things’

It’s easier than ever to buy things online. It’s so easy that Ryan Cassata sometimes does it in his sleep. Cassata, a 24-year-old singer/songwriter and actor from Los Angeles, recently got a notification from Amazon that a package had been shipped to his apartment, but he didn’t remember buying anything. When he logged onto his account and saw that a fanny pack and some socks were on the way, he remembered: A few nights back, he had woken up in the middle of the night to browse--and apparently shop on--Amazon.

He shops when he’s awake, too, buying little gadgets like an onion chopper, discounted staples like a 240-pack of gum, and decorations like a Himalayan salt lamp. The other day, he almost bought a pizza pool float, until he remembered that he doesn’t have a pool. “I don’t really need most of the stuff,” he tells me.

Thanks to a perfect storm of factors, Americans are amassing a lot of stuff. Before the advent of the internet, we had to set aside time to go browse the aisles of a physical store, which was only open a certain number of hours a day. Now, we can shop from anywhere, anytime--while we’re at work, or exercising, or even sleeping. We can tell Alexa we need new underwear, and in a few days, it will arrive on our doorstep. And because of the globalization of manufacturing, that underwear is cheaper than ever before--so cheap that we add it to our online shopping carts without a second thought. “There’s no reason not to shop--because clothing is so cheap, you feel like, ‘why not?’ There’s nothing lost in terms of the hit on your bank account,” Elizabeth Cline, the author of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, told me.

Shopping online also feels good. Humans get a dopamine hit from buying stuff, according to research by Ann-Christine Duhaime, a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. “As a general rule, your brain tweaks you to want more, more, more--indeed, more than those around you--both of ‘stuff’ and of stimulation and novelty,” Duhaime wrote in a Harvard Business Review essay last year. Online shopping allows us to get that dopamine hit, and then also experience delayed gratification when the order arrives a few days later, which may make it more physiologically rewarding than shopping in stores.

Sites like Amazon have made it especially easy to shop. In 1999, the Seattle retailer patented a one-click buying process, which allows customers to purchase something without entering their shipping address or credit card info. It launched its Prime program in 2005, and now more than 100 million people have signed on to pay $119 a year for “free” two-day shipping. As a result, most other major retailers offer free shipping too. Returning stuff is a little more difficult--shoppers usually have to print a label and then go to the post office or a UPS or FedEx site to return packages. Many wait too long, or decide the hassle isn’t worth it because the stuff was cheap anyway. A recent NPR/Marist poll found that nine in 10 consumers rarely or never return stuff they’ve bought online.

Justine Montoya, a caregiver in Los Angeles, buys all sorts of stuff online--baby formula, clothes, household goods. She estimates that she shops online twice a week. “It’s just so easy--you click a button, and it’s on its way,” she told me.

In the last few months alone, I bought an $18 smart watch from Wish.com that I will probably never use, a second Kindle because it was on sale and I am worried my first Kindle is going to die soon, an electric space heater I no longer need, and a pair of wireless earbuds that I had hoped would allow me to charge my iPhone and listen to music at the same time, but that instead just fall out of my ears whenever I put them on. I also bought, on Amazon, a (used) book about hiking in the Sierras for $1.99, only to find the exact same book in a box of my stuff in my parents’ basement. I didn’t return any of it.

In 2017, Americans spent $240 billion--twice as much as they’d spent in 2002--on goods like jewelry, watches, books, luggage, and telephones and related communication equipment, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which adjusted those numbers for inflation. Over that time, the population grew just 13 percent. Spending on personal care products also doubled over that time period. Americans spent, on average, $971.87 on clothes last year, buying nearly 66 garments, according to the American Apparel and Footwear Association. That’s 20 percent more money than they spent in 2000. The average American bought 7.4 pairs of shoes last year, up from 6.6 pairs in 2000.

All told, “we are all accumulating mountains of things,” said Mark A. Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He sometimes asks his students to count the number of things they have on them in class, and once they start counting up gadgets and cords and accessories, they end up near 50. “Americans have become a society of hoarders,” Cohen said. Montoya said she has more stuff now that she has started shopping online: “It’s easier to accumulate more, and it’s easier to spend more.”

At the same time we are amassing all this stuff, Americans are taking up more space. Last year, the average size of a single-family house in America was 2,426 square feet, a 23 percent increase in size from two decades ago, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. The number of self-storage units is rapidly increasing too: There are around 52,000 such facilities nationally; two decades ago, there were half that number.

Of course, not everyone is a part of this hoarding revolution. There are people who can’t or don’t shop online, because they don’t have credit cards or because they are barely making ends meet. Only about 29 percent of households with incomes under $25,000 are members of Amazon Prime, according to Kantar Consulting. Some people are embracing the zero waste movement, or have followed the example of the author Ann Patchett, who published a widely-circulated op-ed in The New York Times about how she resolved to stop shopping for a year. When she ceased buying things like lip gloss and lotion and hair products, she started finding half-used versions of them under the sink, and realized she hadn’t needed new things after all. “The things we buy and buy and buy are like a thick coat of Vaseline smeared on glass,” she wrote. “We can see some shapes out there, light and dark, but in our constant craving for what we may still want, we miss life’s details.”

But most Americans are not curtailing their shopping habits. And as consumers demand cheaper clothing, electronics, and other goods, manufacturers are spending less to make them, which sometimes means they fall apart more quickly. The share of large household appliances that had to be replaced within five years grew to 13 percent in 2013, up from seven percent in 2004. Cheap clothes might lose their shape after a wash or two, or get holes after a few tumbles in the dryer; electronics become obsolete quickly and need to be replaced. While some of this stuff can be recycled or resold, often, it ends up in landfills. In 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, Americans put 16 million tons of textiles in the municipal waste stream, a 68 percent increased from 2000. We tossed 34.5 million tons of plastics, a 35 percent increase from 2000, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency. Over that same time period, the population grew just 14 percent.

“Sometimes, people sit down and cry when they see the amount of garbage we produce in a day,” said Robert Reed, a spokesman for Recology, which handles recycling for West Coast cities like San Francisco. Centered in America’s tech capital, Recology has seen an increase in discarded electronics, including products with lithium batteries, Reed told me. In 2016, a lithium battery fire burnt down a waste management facility in San Mateo.

The 16,000 students who live in dorms at Michigan State University left behind 147,946 pounds of goods like clothing, towels, and appliances when they moved out this year, a 40 percent increase from 2016, according to Kat Cooper, a spokeswoman. The university packs up these goods and donates to them to its surplus store, so that incoming students can buy used, rather than new, stuff. In recent years, dorm cleaners have been finding so many packages of unopened food and toiletries that the university started a program to get students to donate leftover food and toiletries to local organizations like food banks when they move out. This year, it collected 900 pounds of personal care items and 4,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to donate. Pomona College has seen the volume of packages delivered grow by 325 percent in the last 12 years, according to Patricia Vest, a spokeswoman; it, too, asks students to donate unused goods to a resale program. This year, it diverted 42 tons of clothes, furniture, and office supplies.

The Internet has also made it easier to recycle some of the stuff Americans buy and no longer want. Online consignment shops like thredUP and Poshmark help people buy and sell clothes from their closets. Secondhand stores like Goodwill have moved online, too, selling the growing pile of goods they get on the Internet.

But the ability to easily get rid of stuff may be making people feel a little better about buying things they don’t need, and motivating them to buy even more. On a recent weekday, I stopped by the massive warehouse where workers from Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin sort donations to Bay Area stores. Some of the stuff that’s been donated has never been used. Near the front of the warehouse stands a rack of clothes with their original tags on--a $245 blue Nicole Miller cocktail dress, $88 Kit and Ace pants, a pale green J. Jill blouse. “We are seeing items that have been barely used or not used, because when people shop online, it’s a lot of work to return it,” William Rogers, the president of the Goodwill, told me. Rogers himself is guilty--when we met at the warehouse, he dropped off four wall sconces he’d bought a year ago on Amazon. He had tried to put them up, decided they didn’t look good, and brought them to donate.

Secondhand shops can’t resell all of the donations they get. Cline estimates that 85 percent of the clothing that is donated to secondhand stores ends up in landfills every year. Just nine percent of plastic that ends up in the municipal waste stream gets recycled, according to the EPA, and only 15 percent of textiles get recycled. It can be difficult to take apart clothes and re-use the fabrics, Cline said, so lots of clothing in the waste stream gets sent to the developing world, used for rags, or sent to a landfill.

Fifty years ago, the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick coined a phrase for these “useless objects” that accumulate in a house: “kipple.” In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which served as the basis for the movie Blade Runner, he theorized that “the entire universe is moving toward a state of total, absolute kippleization.” Kipple reproduced, Dick wrote, when nobody was around. The ubiquity of mobile devices and the ease of online shopping have made Dick’s prediction come true, with one small tweak: Our kipple does not just multiply on its own, every time we turn away. We grow it ourselves, buying more and more of it, because we can.

so i’m ill. my joints and muscles are flaring up with pain again. i’m getting constant migraines. my vision keeps blurring. i can’t walk more than twenty paces before my legs feel like jelly spaghetti. my forearms are nothing but shooting pains along the nerves which is  n o t  f u n. and i am suffering something awful with ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), alternatively known as The Time of Farts That Kill and Three Hour Toilet Escapades.

i went to my job centre appointment today with my sick note. got that copied and they’re sending it off because i refuse to send it in the post when a) i can’t make a copy of it and b) if it gets lost in the post, they’ll blame me. because it’s sent internally, they can’t accuse me of anything.

i received a letter from uc saying i’m no longer entitled to ANY payments from them because of the sanction they gave me - a 2.5 month long sanction btw.

i need to call them up and demand request a mandatory reconsideration because they’re really dragging this out now and i feel like just slitting my fucking wrists ffs. i don’t even want to call them. the very idea of just waiting for them to answer me on the line, telling them the circumstances, listening to the faux fucking ‘sympathy’ that’s really ‘judgement’, and being left in limbo even fucking more... i’d rather rip my own skin off and it’s really fucking tempting right now (my skin is itching for me to do so fucking fuck).

i’ve signed up to this thing online where i review books and might get paid for them (not all of them tho) but like, even a £1 a review from them makes a difference at this point.

i’ve been told i can’t get another eye test through the nhs because my last one was too recent (tho since they keep sending me letters about it i have no fucking idea) and so i’m stuck with this single pair of glasses that i don’t think are as helpful as they were.

i’ve stopped taking my amitrypline medication because the side effects were horrific and i felt more unstable on them than i’ve ever felt before in my life. i don’t know if they’ve caused some of the stuff i’m experiencing now but i recently noticed that i keep getting a tingling sensation in my face, sort of like pins and needles, and there’s a significant decrease in sensitivity on the left side of my face compared to the right.

i’ve had numbness and tingling issues for years now but the hypersensitivity i have from being autistic sort of counters it to some degree because, when i’m asked “can you feel that?” and the doctor pokes my leg, i answer “yes” because i still sort of can. even when i’ve mentioned “i feel it less though” it’s like it’s just something irrelevant and to be dismissed.

idk if anyone has followed me long enough (or cared about my personal life tbh), but about two years ago, back when i first started trying to get doctors to take me seriously, i genuinely believed that my symptoms were potentially MS related. this was before my brother’s diagnosis of fibro, so i assumed “i have a cousin with MS that zig-zags her body and the things she’s described match a lot of the things i have”. doctor i saw back then dismissed it though.

i’ve tried to contact my rhuematology specialist to sort of my medication and, maybe, see if there’s anything to my worries about this. but i s2g, if i get dismissed again i might scream. i mean, i’ve never had an MRI. when i asked for one two years ago, i was told point blank “we won’t waste the money on you to have a scan” and i just- wtf? MRI scans are incredibly useful for diagnosing and ruling out a multitude of conditions/illnesses/injuries. not only that, but they can help reveal problems or issues that you don’t even know about that could be dangerous or harmful ffs. but it’s a “waste of money” to spend right...

still bitter about that.

mason is doing better than he was but he’s still had some bloody pee today. we think he’ll be okay but we’re keeping an eye on him. the money for his treatment came from the amazing people on here who donated and i can’t thank you enough for that! we made sure to buy additional toys and change the litter we use as well to see if that makes any difference overall. so far, i think it might be. and none of that would have been possible without ya’ll sending money so thank you from the bottom of my cold, shrivelled, cat-shaped heart.

i’m pissed off at my lecturer for what he said in monday’s class when we complained about the one-and-a-half hour long video he made us watch with no subtitles on fucking philosophy of all things. he told the class that we need to be engaging with material at this level and have no excuse to not bother to do so.

Help a Trans Teen and His Family Find a Safer Place to Call Home

Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to everyone here on tumblr to try and help a friend of mine find a safer place for her transgender son, Malcolm, to live. We live in the same city, and I can testify that it is incredibly conservative. We have no resources for transgender people. I’m trans and when I was trying to access transition related heath care I had to travel to two cities over (about an hours drive) to find someone. Even when I did find someone his transgender patients were never his first priority as he was primarily a fertility specialist. The schools are making it incredibly difficult for Malcolm. He can’t try out for the male basketball team, use the correct restroom, and is constantly mis-gendered. His mental heath has really suffered. More details about all this is below. All his mom wants is for her son to be able to live in place where he will be treated with respect and where he can have access to the resources he needs. We all want to see him thrive.

“My name is Stacey Shearrion. My husband and I are living in Collier County, Florida with our three children. Last November we started planning and saving to move to Sacramento, California at the end of the school year. When folks at work ask why we want to leave I give a vague “This area just hasn’t been a good fit for our family.”

Here’s the bigger picture. My husband and I are originally from Boston, Massachusetts. We moved here about 5 years ago. My husband has RA, and the weather is better for his health; the cost of living is lower than it is in the Metro Boston area; once my husband was forced to retire on disability, this was more affordable for us. The schools in Collier County are supposedly above average for Florida, and it’s generally a clean, safe area. We thought we would do alright here…then our oldest started having trouble in middle school. We weren’t sure what was going on until last year when he came out as being transgender. We love and support our son, and I wish our love was enough to make everything alright, but it’s not.  He has been harassed and misgendered by students, faculty and staff at his school. He had to give up the basketball that he’s always loved because he is only allowed to play for the girl’s team even though he identifies as male. When he needs to use the bathroom at his huge school, he has to cross campus to use the bathroom in the nurse’s office. We have reached out for legal assistance and received some, but again, not enough. With all of this, he is now struggling with major depression. Our child is very bright. He was in advanced and honors classes. But now, after numerous suicide attempts, the school system wants to put him in a part time remedial school for problem students. We’ve decided to home school him instead.

This is not an ideal situation. We want him to have the opportunity to go to school where he is treated with dignity and respect, just like every other kid. We want him to be able to at least try out for the basketball team. We want him to have access to mental health services. We want him to have access to transgender welcoming medical care. That’s why we decided to move our family 3,000 from here. And through a lot of budgeting we were on track, but a major part of our plan to leave was a plum seasonal contract I had working at a local hospital. Last week the hospital let a few of us go early. The numbers are down and they can’t justify keeping all their seasonal workers at this point. I’m hustling to find work, but Naples has a very seasonal economy and this isn’t the best time of year to be looking for work. At the moment, we are $5,000 short of making the move.If this were just a matter of us wanting to move for greater opportunities, I would resign myself to waiting another year to get the money together. A year delay isn’t that big a deal to me or my husband. But to a teenager entering his Junior year, it’s an eternity. It’s another year of homeschooling, not out of choice but out of fear for his safety. It’s another year that he doesn’t have to chance to play ball. It’s another year of sub-par mental health care and the daily fear that today he might succumb to hopelessness and become a statistic. Which is why I’m humbling myself and appealing to friends, family and strangers to help us to help our child. I wish our love and support were enough, but we can’t change the entire culture around us. Therefore, I am asking you to help us bridge that gap. We are asking for $5,000, which will cover a low budget move; a U-Haul truck, gasoline for the truck and our car, a few stops in hotel rooms along the way and security deposits. They grew up together, their families practically one thanks to their family’s businesses being tied together at the name. Levi and Stella’s great-grandfathers had created their own wealth, using their intelligence and charm to create what would become the most successful investment banking group the city had ever seen. They were babysat together whenever their parents had events to attend, and when they were old enough, they made fun of the snobby, rich couples trying to suck up to their parents’ wealth. Levi and Stella had always been friends, but it always felt as though their friendship was built artificially, not through genuine interactions. Although they were thick as thieves when they were kids, they slowly grew apart as time passed, realizing that there were others that they clicked better with, who maybe accepted them better for who they were. 

Still, they were never completely out of each others’ lives – they attended the same university, were in similar social circles, and of course, the dinners and galas never stopped requiring their attendance, so they would see each other now and then. Having been one of the few people who actually knew his mother personally, she was even there for him (albeit briefly) after his mother’s passing. It was at one charity event (a Saturday after the longest week Levi could remember) when he spilled. Too much whiskey was consumed on his end, and quickly, he was unloading his frustrations as she listened intently – of course, Levi himself has no memory of her helping him back to his apartment, no memory of her telling him that she was planning to disappear soon. After she actually disappeared, Levi had shrugged it off, and was even happy for Stella, who had told him at a young age how she dreamed of living along the coast of the French Riviera, indulging in fine champagne and sitting front-row at the Monte-Carlo Masters and marrying a famous tennis player. He thought she was going to go live out her dreams – never in a million years did he think she’d actually disappear. Never in a billion years did he think that she would return, especially with information he never remembered telling her. Despite being two weeks early and causing his mother to endure a surprise caesarean section,  Levi Christian Calderón was born into the world with big, curious, hazel eyes,. His mother had called it–she believed he would one day have the knowledge and power to bring a force, a change to the world. Little did she know, as frail and and in-awe that she was, how right she would be. From pointing to the Van Gogh and Picasso originals lining the walls of the Calderón Mansion in the Upper East Side in his high chair, to highlighting newspaper articles for new vocabulary words, Levi never stopped wanting to learn. What’s this, how’s that–the boy simply did not stop asking questions. He’d read books until 3 AM as a kid, snuggled up in his father’s desk chair with a blanket wrapped around his knees, flipping pages until he conquered his latest endeavor.

With all the questioning and shoulder-tapping, most would have thought that Alejandro and Jane Calderón, Levi’s loving (and madly-in-love) parents, would have grown tired of answering questions that prompted thought, perspective, and impartiality. In fact, Alejandro, who was the Chairman and CEO of Maddox Calderón, only the most prominent investment banking group in the world (the position, naturally, was populated only by the offspring of Levi’s great-grandfather and his partner, James Maddox, the original founders of the company), was ecstatic to realize how dangerously smart his son would be when he became of age to succeed his role. On the flip side, Jane, one of the loveliest and humblest women to grace the streets of the Upper East Side, was simply overjoyed to see that her son shared the same curious mind she possessed. Jane, the founder of the international non-profit organization called Enfantisse, was quick to feed into Levi’s spirit of inquiry, inviting him along on her global trips to conferences and visits to teach him about the cultures of the world.

Levi, of course, jumped at this chance: as a young child, despite his closeness with books, he was ready to escape the confines of the spacious, crown-molded rooms and explore the genuine, colorful tastes of the world. From age seven, Levi jumped willingly onto his mother’s private jets, notebook in hand, ready to learn. They traveled to African cities where he helped install plumbing and painted desks for local primary schools, taught kids his age in Thailand how to read and write in between games of soccer, and most of all, absorbed every piece of knowledge he could. Cultures, recipes, jokes, signs–but the most important thing he came back with was a passion to learn languages. Upon entering St. Jude’s, Levi picked up verbs, words, and conjugations like no other, mastering several languages before even reaching his high school years. During his holidays, he’d fly off with his mother once again, ready to show off his newfound Swahili skills to the locals he had met just a summer prior. Simply put, he loved seeing the beauty in the world, and believed that the more he knew, the more he could understand, and the more he could appreciate about the world.

As Enfantisse grew, Levi’s mother’s job became less about the hands-on experiences she had once spent all her time doing, and more about spreading awareness, attending conferences, and educating others of the Calderóns’ status about their work. Slowly, the trips decreased, probably just around the time when Levi’s father started pressing him to focus on his schoolwork–he had reached the start of his high school career, after all. He excelled in his work, becoming a model student in his humanities classes, but struggled in his STEM-related coursework–it wasn’t that he wasn’t smart enough to understand, his mind was just elsewhere. For Levi, his thoughts were at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, or climbing the steps of the temples of Kathmandu, not solving second differentials or determining the molarity of an acid. He was brilliant–any one of Levi’s teachers could see that, he just needed a little guidance on where to prioritize his thoughts. You could often see him reading a book on his way home from school, tucking a pencil in his pocket so it could be ready for him to underline profound passages whenever he pleased.

With a little help from his parents and his guidance counselors, Levi blossomed into one of the best students St. Jude’s had ever seen–acceptances letters were thrown in every which way (although, his last name did help in that regard), and soon, Levi was moving out of the Calderón house and into a dorm room at Columbia, the school his entire family had attended since his great-grandfather first immigrated to the United States. For once, Levi’s father was not worried about his son’s future in the banking business–Levi was smart beyond measure, talented, passionate, and charming, and finally knew where to put his head. Twenty-year old Levi was just beginning to get his life in order when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Since the moment her medical results came back, the Calderon family was in shambles. The lively Spanish culture that once colored the family turned into a monochrome grey, with smiles seen seldom around the house. The joy and love that was once flooded the halls of the Calderón Estate vanished; once Jane’s fight with cancer ultimately ended, nothing was the same. Alejandro turned cold, channeling all his energy and anger into his work, never really giving Levi the time of day. As father and son grew apart, so did Levi’s drive and commitment to his family.

It was one day, after Levi and his father held another heated argument in his father’s study, when Levi slammed the door, eyes watering, and bounded up the stairs to revisit his mother’s old studio. A photographer, Jane had always loved to capture her moments around the world and write journal entries about the things she had learned, the cultural differences, and what she would have wanted to do better in each location she visited. He found her desk untouched, her camera still loaded with pictures from her most recent trip to Paraguay. Immediately, the tears that had pooled up in his eyes started flowing down his cheeks, the beauty of the world through his mother’s eyes overwhelming him completely. He missed her, dearly, missed her perspective, her knowledge, her passion, her compassion. He checked in on Enfantisse from time to time, and while they were still steadily increasing their outreach to children all over the world, Levi wanted more for them. He wanted to build a school year, hire more staff there–most of all, he wanted to be out there himself, just as his mother had done just years prior. In his daily life, he felt almost sick handling money the size of some nations’ GDPs, and wondered just how far one transaction could go. He crunched numbers in his bed at home, chipping at the little free time he had to figure out how he could siphon some money out to help the kids he had known growing up.

Little by little, he started selling minute percentages of stocks that came to his desk, making sure that the money he would take would be small and insignificant enough that no one would notice–and immediately began donating this money under an anonymous name to his late mother’s organization. Today, he still juggles between hiding from his father (not that he truly gives much attention to Levi anyway, aside from social events and company business), and struggling to come to terms with what he truly wants to do with the rest of his life. While he wants to honor his family by taking on the job of running their company after his father retires, Levi cannot help but feel drawn to the travels and the concept of continuing his mothers work–and writing about and photographing the world, just like she did.

A few days ago I scraped a co-worker's vehicle in our work parking lot. She wasn't in a proper parking space, but whatever, it was clearly my fault. I am paying for repairs to her car.
