DD2 Ask Game

WORLD & STORY: 1. Do they have any pre-existing relationships with any particular NPCs from before the start of the game? Has becoming the Arisen changed those relationships?

(Dragon’s Dogma 2 Ask Game)

This is one of those ongoing discoveries that I love about the game, because I'll just talk to an NPC one day - nothing, and then the next day an entire minific lands in my head. (I also find that with most things, Olivia tends to get more fleshed out in these areas as a "second playthrough" character than Reverie did on account of me having a better grasp on things 😅)

Reverie does have history with the Nameless Village though. They raised her and were her family for all intents and purposes, and Srail was her friends-with-benefits, they would have been the king and queen of thieves, lover.

(I'm also fiddling with the idea that Klaus and her actually had some run-ins a few times while she was in the thieving business and despite her operating on the questionable side of things he was pretty smitten with her.)

But for all of her relationships, becoming Arisen and more importantly cursed to forget everything has definitely altered those relationships with some significance - mostly just making things kind of awkward tbh X'D Most who knew her are still supportive of her, though.

Olivia has a lot of connections throughout all of Vermund, I'd have to go down a long list. The most recent one for her though is Luz, who she regards like an older auntie/grandmother figure. Back in her youth, Luz had yet to divine that Olivia would become Arisen, but had shared some stories with her about former Arisen (personal details always left out).

Luz was probably one of the few older ""parental"" type figures in her life that she actually had a positive relationship with, and she respects and loves her a lot. ; - ; I wouldn't say becoming Arisen has changed their relationship, except that Luz is slightly more open and honest about her own past, and Olivia feels the weight of her charge a little more keenly for not wanting to let Gramma Luz down.

I didn't expect him to become a familial f/o when I started watching F.inal F.antasy 16 so I guess you can say it was quite Shocking- [SMACKED]

Horrible puns aside, my S/I and Cid aren't related by blood. The two met by chance when Panchi was pretty young! By that point in their life, Panchi has experienced a rough life and met many people who didn't treat them very well so they were very skeptical of Cid when they met him for the first time. Poor kiddo didn't even speak a word- They even used a bit of ice magic on Cid during a handshake!

Fun Fact: The first time Cid ever heard them speak was when Panchi noticed some enemies nearby and they called out his name to warn him!

But yeah! Years pass ofc and by the time the game starts, Panchi is now much more talkative and also a little smartass (affectionate). They both tease each other a lot and it's fun to watch! Especially when Panchi develops their crush on Clive-

17.) Your favorite character to write this year?

Likely would be Yugi! I know I tend to be drawn to writing Atem, but Yugi is extremely fun to write as well! :D I find myself relating to him a lot more, and his character has so much potential that I find hasn't been explored much. :3

18.) The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

I think I'm going to have to go with Yami- when I started writing his character more frequently, I started stressing about giving him a personality that was separate from Atem and Yugi, but still made sense for Yami. I eventually figured it out after tapping into some older fics that I wrote about the three, but yeah, figuring him out and being comfortable to post more fics about him was a bit of a challenge. :3

27.) What do you listen to while writing?

I tend to just listen to music. ^^ If there's a specific song that's inspired that fic, then it's usually that song on repeat. If I have a playlist that I accidentally associate with certain fics, then I'll listen to those playlists. On the rare occasion, I'll sit in silence and do some writing.

TLDR; She has whimsy in her heart despite her love of violence! (Much more detailed lore/character ramble below ^_^)

I am so glad you asked, anon! They’re the same person. Both have always been Lunara. And that’s why I’ve always enjoyed her character so much out of my main 4 characters.

Having grown up in such a violent cult-like environment, it’s only natural that she’d still have SOME remaining mindset lingering in her. Only, it’s not the cult of Lolth that she reminisces or holds on to, it’s the violence. It’s what was fun. It was what she knew.

When she escaped the Underdark, it wasn’t because she wanted to live a life of peace... It was because she wanted to live a life for herself. Now that she lives on the surface, although she can’t be AS violent as she used to be, she’s discovered SO many things she had no clue about back at home.

The moon, the sun, the stars, the sky… All the trees and fresh air… These were the things she’d only heard of vaguely through stories. But now she’s seen it for herself. And she loves them. She thinks they’re weird… but she loves them. And that fills her heart with whimsy and light.

So yeah, she may be a little creepy… violent… and perhaps a little cannibalistic! ^_^; But she is happy to have found a new world. And she only survived this all because her journey to the surface lead her to Selûne (this was an accident. She had meant to find an Eilistraee temple and landed at the wrong moon goddess’ front steps LOL but that’s a story for another day) but she is happy nonetheless… And that’s how both exist. <33

Saw your 'The Horrors' comic and 1. Absolutely loved it, and 2. I love love LOVE the progression of Dazai's fears and his reactions to it. There's the immediate fear of Chuuya dying, and his response is to go numb and emotionless. In RESPONSE to that reaction, the mirror switches to copying that apathetic state he was in his mafia days, and he snaps back to being emotional and keeping his priorities to 'keep Chuuya safe' to distract himself, which is what he does in the ADA now and critically, what Oda wanted for him. So of course, it latches on to THAT fear, and without the cold, analytical side of him on the front, it completely catches him off-guard. The build-up and progression is SO good and my God you're amazing.

!! Yessss oh my gosh I'm so happy you noticed all that!! I spent a lot of time thinking through the different shifts of form it takes — and how because the only thing the mirror-ability can do is reflect, Dazai initially thinks he can beat it by remaining unemotional. The problem is, the mirror-ability can reflect the darkest part of any side that Dazai shows it, including that lack of emotion, so he can't beat it at all. I thought that would be a really messed up antagonist for him to face :0

Also, another backstory tidbit because this made me think of it, is that whenever no one is looking at the mirror it starts borrowing elements of forms that have scared people in the past, which leads to it becoming big and fucked-up looking. This is because in the past, one of the people that it reflected was afraid of the mirror gaining a memory and intent. So the mirror now intentionally hunts people, and tries to scare them into looking at it with ominous noises and such. But yeah, that's why it takes on these forms when nobody is watching!

I just love the idea of a monster that essentially weaponizes the fear of the unknown. It's that whole concept of "not seeing the monster is worse because the real monster can never be as scary as what you imagine it to be", except in this case it can genuinely be as bad as anyone imagines, and if they think of a way to make it worse, the monster will immediately get worse. A complete runaway affect as people get more and more scared of it.

Anyway, this ask made me super happy, I'm really glad the motivations behind the shapeshifting came across, as well as the shifts in Dazai's mentality!! Thank you so much for this ask, it made my day :D

On a semi-related note, is the reason you split the chapters into two parts because that's how SJ+ releases them? I already buy the magazine for other reasons, would you translate them in one shot if I posted them?

Yeah, the translation is split because I only follow SJ+ updates. The entire chapter would be too long to TL at once and posting them ahead of their online release is essentially spreading spoiler, so maybe it's for the best? 😅

It'd be lovely to have access to the magazine! But you might've noticed that I'm only TLing chapters featuring Law, so I may not translate the immediate upcoming chapters. I'm down for translating more but that's too much work to do all by myself. I haven't received a request to translate more than what I do and my audience for OP Academy is niche and small, around 100 people or less lol. probably would've forced myself to churn out translations for every update if they blew up djfkdkd

It’s canon that this fact is not common knowledge so is it just that In this au Jay told the others and they believed him even though he didn’t have proof.

And if Kai didn’t already know I’m wondering what happened for that to be brought up in a conversation

you are correct in assuming that jay hasn't told the others in this au! only nya, pixal, and zane know; nya knows from skybound and zane and pixal know from the ending of prime empire. jay doesn't actually mean to keep it a secret, he just forgot that the others don't know in this timeline and nya, zane, and pixal all assume it's a sensitive topic and so they don't bring it up.

once libber realises that kai is a part of the ninja, she assumes that kai knows her son as she can successfully predict that he would've been recruited by wu too if ray and maya's kid was. particularly since they're both elements of creation. in her years in superhell (sorry im going to keep calling the netherspace that), she's spent countless hours imagining the kind of person her son might grow up to be, hoping that he would be ok without her, and now she finally has the chance to get some answers and closure. she's not exactly going to pass the opportunity up.

for a moment, kai can't figure out who she's talking about since none of his teammates have a missing mother to his knowledge, and he only makes the connection that it's jay when libber prompts him about lightning powers. the following emotions are shock, then confusion, then embarrassment at every time he's labelled jay as the token guy-with-no-family-trauma (a title that jay was fine with accepting). after that, i do believe that he might hold a little anger on behalf of his brother, wanting libber to justify her abandoning jay and wondering why jay's biological father, who very much wasn't in superhell, wasn't there for him either.

kai possibly also uses libber to displace some of the emotions he felt about his own parents' return that he wasn't able to properly express at the time with wu's disappearance and the expectation that he would be joyful that they're back. this puts a slight strain on their dynamic at first, but libber quickly gains his trust.

Emrys is actually really good with kids, and has a lot of fun playing with them. He'll give them piggy back rides, play hide-and-seek or tag, teach them how to fletch an arrow or make a basic trap to catch small game - basically just be a big brother.

They tend to ask a lot of questions, which he isn't a big fan of, but they also usually ask the really interesting things like "Why does it rain?" or "Why doesn't the sky fall down?" And he's just like yanno, that's a really good question, why do you think it doesn't fall down? 😂 Basically, he can just be a big kid himself and have fun.
