20 and 35 from the fanfic asks game!

20. I think it depends on the fandom, but I don't have a lot of AUs. For Animaniacs, I LOVE writing Groove AU fics in particular. Honestly, I'm surprised I'm the first person I know of to put Yakko in a band instead of Wakko, because Yakko as an optimistic wannabe rockstar is just such a fun concept! And then aging up Wakko has really let him show off a more mature side. Add that to Dot and the Warners work so well off each other! Strawberry Shortcake fics from me are all AU fics, but that's mostly because I feel the two versions I really like don't have a lot of fanfic opportunity. Roleplay-wise, one of my friends and I have done a lot, but it's a bit different, especially since my partner's the idea guy of the two of us. Everything else though, such as Papa Louie, Jellystone, Punch-Out, etc. is just canon-based with a few theories thrown in.

35. Hoo boy, favorite fic is TOUGH. Right now, I think Babysitter in Blue is my favorite. Wakko and Dot's dynamic was so much fun to write, and I feel like I developed Wakko a ton as a character! Rounding out my top five are the four fics with the "Author's Favorite" tag on my AO3, being Suck it Up, A Heart in a Dream, Lollipop Milk, and It's My Party.

Rules: Post 10 of your favourite movies and tag 10 people! Thanks @glamorouspixels for the tag. I’ve actually been thinking about this of late because I’ve listening to Brett Goldstein’s podcast Films To Be Buried With. These are in the order I watched them:

1. Lord of the Rings

My favourite films of all time, based on my favourite book of all time. Also I consider them to be one very long 11.5h movie (yes, I refer to the extended editions).

2. Chicago

One of the first movie musical adaptations I ever saw, which left an indelible impression on me. To this day I could probably describe the Cell Block Tango scene shot by shot. Catherine Zeta-Jones! 

3. Once Upon A Time In Mexico

This bonkers finale to Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi trilogy has everything. It has Antonio Banderas as a brooding guitar-playing hitman. It has peak Johnny Depp in the era when it was not weird to have a Johnny Depp phase. It has Salma Hayek looking absolutely smoking. It has Enrique Iglesias, whose guitar has a flamethrower. It has Danny Trejo! Willem Dafoe! Eva Mendes! Mickey Rourke! all playing these absolutely unhinged roles. I adore it. 

4. Sin City

So there are two Rodriguez films on this list, but I don’t think I could do without either. Sin City is perhaps one of the best graphic novel screen adaptations of all time. I was obsessed with this film from quite possibly too young an age, especially with Rosario Dawson as a dominatrix with a machine gun. It’s utter pulp and I’m not sorry.

5. Brick

I maintain this high-school neo-noir with baby Joseph Gordon-Levitt is still Rian Johnson’s best film, and this is despite the fact it was so low-budget they had to fake a transition by pulling a garbage bag over the camera and then playing it in reverse. It also contains a scene with a chicken jug that will live in my heart forever.

6. Singing’ in the Rain

Do they make them like this any more? They do not. I can’t begin to pick what I love most about this - the hysterically funny script, the OT3 vibes, the fact that nearly every musical number is a colossal achievement of its own (Donald O’Connor running up the walls in Make ‘Em Laugh! The tap-dancing in Moses Supposes! Cyd Charisse in that green dress in Broadway Melody!) or even just the comic genius of Jean Hagen, which could sustain an entire film on its own.

7. Inception

This film managed somehow to be both a cinematic masterpiece and fandom catnip, which is rare. As an architecture/urbanism geek who also loves heists and devastatingly competent men in suits, I feel like this film was made for me. Also, Arthur/Eames! One of my all-time ships. 

8. 28 Days Later

Best second-generation zombie film, for my money - both stunningly shot and horrifying. The way the final mansion massacre is filmed while John Murphy’s soundtrack builds on that eerie four-note crescendo - chills. Also, young Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris! really the most beautiful zombie film ever. 

9. The Maltese Falcon

I dithered over whether to put this or The Big Sleep in the bracket of “classic book-to-film noir adaptation starring Humphrey Bogart” - I love them both equally - but went with this because it is, marginally, the better film (and the better book - Raymond Chandler could write the hell out of a novel but he could not tie up his plots). It also has the fantastic villain duo of Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, as well as a young Elisha Cook Jr as the gunsel who gets played for a sap. That ending! “If they hang you, I’ll always remember you.” 

10. In the Mood for Love

This is, hands-down, the greatest film on this list. Definitely one of the greatest films ever made. Every single shot is a work of art. That iconic scene of Maggie Cheung buying noodles in a dark high-collared cheongsam, walking down a smoky alleyway swinging her tingkat to the strains of the plaintive violin of Shigeru Umebayashi’s theme, brushing past Tony Leung in his steam-rumpled suit - it gives me shivers. I’ll never be over the ending of this film. I’ll also never be normal about buying noodles.

Ok, so, I have mostly been ignoring the fact my favourite character is leaving Holby, but I can’t ignore it now. It’s happening, so this is my post about it. I don’t know if anyone cares, but i figured since I have this url, I might as well say something.

When I started watching Holby city in 2008, I already knew who Jac was. My mum watched the show, so I started paying attention properly. I think It’s something of an indication of Jac’s/Rosie’s presence on screen that I went in already knowing the majority of what had happened to her. She’s hard to ignore even in passing.

Now at this time, we were still on livejournal and fanfiction.net. No easy tag to follow on here for me. I used internet forums (Though mostly this was to post fanfiction about Cyd/Greg from casualty) and Lj. I made my own Holby/Jac livejournal. I made my own icons. I was about 14, and this was my fandom, small as it was. I once got an ill advised Jac haircut (I do not have those cheekbones and so could not really pull it off) I sent off for her autograph and in the post (this was in the days they gave you fan adresses on the holby website)

She took me through my teen years. she took me through university. After meeting one of my best friends at halls and bonding through our mutual hatred of a fellow resident, we also bonded over Holby and watched it together every week.

There are a lot of different people who find something to relate to with Jac. She speaks to lgbtqia+ people, gender non conforming people, people with abusive parents, NA people,and so many other facets of her personality. But for me I think she embodied something hard to define.I think the teenage angst I felt could translate through to her. She was rude, she made mistakes, she was judged. Sometimes it felt like she was never given the chance to get it right. But she came through it. And she came through it as one of the most loved and iconic characters in the whole show. She also wasn’t afraid to be a total fucking bitch. Love it or loathe it, you have to respect it.

I’m sad that she’s leaving. I’m sad that she won’t get the exit she deserves. But I’m happy for Rosie. They put her through so much shit to make this show. She’s lost a lot. She’s fought a lot. She’s been through a lot of trauma on and off screen - not just with the recent mental health storyline, but that certainly is the most obvious and painful example of the emotional labour actors have to go through - And if it’s right for her to go then it’s right. But I hope we remember that Jac was a character who started with almost nothing and came through with her dream job and a family that loves her. The show won’t be the same without her. There won’t be another character that compares. There won’t be another actress that compares. 

I don’t know how to finish this off. This character has been part of my life, and my fandom life, for 13 years. She was rude. She was cruel. She was sad. She was happy. She’s a mother. She’s changed. I want to think that means something. I know I’m being sentimental and a bit soppy. I hope i see her again. Even if I don’t I know she’s leaving for the right reasons. I can imagine Jac living her best life, which is more than i can say for some of my faves. 

Rosie, thanks for all the work, and all the years. Jac, thanks for all the pure fucking drama.

SPIN TO WIN GAME AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ON DELFINO!!

As you’ll know if you saw my post yesterday, I’ve been planning to host a spin to win game on my island for a long time now and finally decided to do it! Here are all the details!

Rules of spin to win game 1:

2k bells for each spin of the wheel! Spin a wheel with the numbers 1 - 8 on it, and if it lands on an even number you win a prize! (Please don’t spam the wheel, press it once to spin and then once again to make it stop). Prizes are all wrapped so you can pick one at random. When it’s your turn to play, you can pay for up to 5 spins at a time so you have a good chance of winning. Prizes for this game are all furniture items with a buy price of at least 3k bells, though MANY have a higher buy price!

Rules of spin to win game 2 (win big!):

This game will use a different style of wheel, with a large “lose” area and a much smaller “win” area. 10k bells per spin and again you can ask for up to 5 spins at a time! Prizes for this game will have a buy price of at least 70k bells, though MANY have a higher buy price!

MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF BOTH GAMES:

Okay so this WAS a section about how the wheels will say different things for different people but that must’ve been patched because all the people I’ve had over tonight have been seeing the same numbers!! So uuuuh I guess instead the most important rule will be that if the wheel lands in the middle of 2 numbers on the small game, it’ll be the host’s decision ultimately if it’s a win or lose. And ofc on the off chance that your switch does display something different, I and the group I currently have over will come to a consensus (but that doesn’t appear to be happening anymore thankfully).

Island will be open from 7pm - 10pm BST tonight (Saturday 11th of July) and from 2pm - 5pm BST tomorrow (Sunday 12th of July) to hopefully include some people with different time zones (as long as there’s prizes still left tomorrow ofc!) 

The games will be held above Cyd and Diana’s house (follow the path to the left when you come out of the airport, over the bridge and up). My island is a work in progress and I don’t get much time to play anymore so it’s not very spectacular yet, sorry!

Top 7 comfort movies

I’m roughly 12 years late to the party but I was tagged by @ajoblotofjunk and @ilikeblue ! Thanks so much!

So confession up front - when looking for comfort stuff I actually tend towards TV! So here’s a mix of comfort media XD Also, like, in which I ramble only semi-coherently about things I love. 😅

1. Singin’ in the Rain

I... have no deep reasons for loving this. I just - I love Cosmo Brown. I love tap dancing. I love the earnestness of this whole flick and the OT3-ness that is just, like, everywhere in this damn movie. The songs are catchy, the dancing is impressive as all get out, it’s a lot of fun. The dorky scenes about enunciation - even if I could do without the sexist overtones to Lena’s storyline. I used to work in TV, so the stuff about where to put the mics was RELATABLE (if... not exactly the same ofc). The cast is attractive. There is 1 space mom (Debbie Reynolds) and 1 space aunt (Cyd Charisse) in it, which tickles me xD 

Let’s see, I’ve given random headcanons on Singin’ before, but let’s go with this one. When watching it the first time in my twenties and “Make ‘em Laugh” came on, my pal said with such deep earnest and pained joy, “Cosmo is doing all this just to make Don laugh,” and I think about that every time I watch that sequence. 

THE LOVE. it’s eVERYWHERE.

2. Parks and Recreation

Look, I can totally see how Parks & Rec isn’t for everyone. But to me, it’s a half-hour long televisual hug of people doing their best to love each other and make the world better, with helpings of political commentary and utterly absurd comedy. It definitely doesn’t come without caveats and is already dated in some ways, but in a weird way, I appreciate that Schur & Goor have grown in their politics that missteps taken in P&R aren’t repeated in and are often actually rectified in B99 & The Good Place. I deeply, deeply love the relationship between Ben and Leslie, and how hard Leslie loves: people, Pawnee, politics, public service. The families-of-choice vibes are strong in this one and there are few things I am more of a suck for than families-of-choice. I could ramble endlessly on this one, so I’ll cut myself off there.

Anyhoops, I have very many feelings about P&R and if you’ve been wondering whether to watch it but holding back for whatever reason, please DEFINITELY message me and I will share with you my many thoughts on why you should watch, where there might be squicks, and why you should actually start with season 2, episode 21 (yes, even the completionists amongst you).

3. Jurassic Park

... I love dinosaurs, and I love Dr Ellie Satler. She is amazing and if there was a gif of her with the triceratops I would have chosen that one. Between her general personality/competency, her unabashed feminism and her face, she remains the best 🥰Also I appreciate that Lex also got to save the day, in a way v specific to her skillset and that the film didn’t dismiss her despite being v scared and way outside her comfort zone in the outdoorsy survival parts of the film. 

I also have fond memories of going to see it for my sixth birthday and going to the bathroom when the T-rex eats Gennaro, so not totally understanding why all my pals were terrified when I got back. Ofc I then had fears that a t-rex would stomp and crush our home, but *handwaves* I grew out of that fear. And grew a new one.

4. Avatar: the Last Airbender

Ho-hum. Where to start with Avatar. Lmao, in the context of Game of Thrones (to which it has been ofc compared lately) just having a long-form television show which delivers on the vast majority of its themes and premises is a relief and satisfying. But, I liked Avatar long before I was back in the GOT-verse so. It’s a compelling narrative, carefully constructed and mindful of the stories and values it’s putting out into the world. And those stories, values and themes aren’t light. It tackles war, genocide, familial abuse, revenge, and redemption alongside things like building family, accepting differences, forgiveness, and honesty. That said, it balances those things with children-being-children, and moments of grace and humour. Each character is well-drawn, their personalities and choices respected, and the idea that character-drives-plot is masterfully demonstrated. Hey look - we’ve got some families-of-choice vibes here too!

I think I’ve previously rambled in the tags of a post about Katara specifically. But as someone who has, ah, an appreciation for anger and an awareness that women + anger = bad, societally speaking, Katara was a breath of fresh air. She is as compassionate as she is angry, and while there are philosophical differences between characters when it comes to her acting on her anger, the anger itself is never questioned or denigrated, by other characters or by the narrative itself. Her anger is never used as a tool to invalidate her other characteristics, or the reverse (her compassion, her nurturing side, etc, are never used to invalidate her anger), and she means a lot to me.

Also idk what this is but it came up when I searched Avatar and if I have to see it and be slightly confused and embarrassed then so do you:

5. Pacific Rim

lmao I rambled so much about the past few I’m tempted to just say: I JUST LOVE IT OK. Which is true, but. A bit more. Pacific Rim is like two hours of hope. I think I have in my queue a post that describes the relationship between Mako and Raleigh as two hurt & hardened warriors who nonetheless find softness with each other, and that is 100% true. But that ignores how in many ways, the same is true for Stacker and Mako, and even Stacker and Raleigh to degrees. Stacker’s adoption of Mako is very important. A black man with an East London accent being the most vital person in the movement to save the world is important. The multi-national, scrappy and semi-guerilla response to a weird af global threat, and the related deep humanity in facing the end of the world and hoping against hope that there’s a chance, also deeply resonant. 

It’s also stunning: Guillermo del Toro and his colour schemes, y’all. The fight scenes are so GOOD and INTERESTING and just so blatantly done by someone who knew exactly what they were doing and loved every minute of it. The idea of the drift and of drift compatibility is lovely: that philosophical belief in the interconnectedness of people. 6. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Women being competent and supported is deeply comforting. I’ve particularly found myself rewatching MFMM as the world is on fire. Just - watching Phryne build her family (families of choice!) and her community, get her men, and win the day through cleverness and determination is heartening.

7. The Holiday

I love Kate Winslet’s arc in this. But honestly I think much of my love for this centres on the fact that I saw it when v much longing to move to the UK and it is the most charming/romantic portrayal of Britain and that appealed to 20 y-o K who was so desperate to go. That said, the arc between Iris & Arthur (eg the gif below) makes me cry every time, so there’s that.

2017 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (preliminary)

More than two hundred movies since 2017 began and just after passing six hundred total write-ups on this blog, it’s that time of year again! As all who have been tagged here probably know, I host an Oscar-like ceremony celebrating all the movies of that year’s Movie Odyssey at the year’s end. I contacted most of you beforehand to ask if you could help narrow down the shortlist for the final round of Movie Odyssey Award nominees in this category.

We have 23 songs (up from 17 last year... yikes!) in this preliminary round, separated into two groups -- songs that appear in the same movie have been placed into separate groups; all other songs were randomized. Unlike last year which was a La La Land/Moana/Purple Rain/Saturday Night Fever/The Slipper and the Rose party, this shortlist features more non-musical movies. No movie was shortlisted more than twice this round. With English, Hindi, Japanese, and Spanish involved, it is also the most multilingual field ever over a mixture of musical genres.

INSTRUCTIONS In the group that you have been sorted into, please rank (#1-10) at least five and at most ten of your assigned group’s songs. Please consider (to the best of your ability): your personal preferences (most important), how musically interesting a song is, the lyrics, context within the film (if you’ve seen it), choreography (if applicable), and the song’s cultural impact/life outside the film (if applicable, and also the least important factor). TABULATION Two tabulation methods will be used this year - one will have actual bearing on the results; the other is experimental and may be used in 2018.

The former is a points-based, ranked choice method which has been used since the first time I asked friends, followers, and family to help out. Here is last year’s example. A respondent’s first choice receives 10 points, the second choice receives 9, the third choice receives 8, etc. The winner is the song that ends up with the most total points. This will be used for the preliminary and final rounds this year.

Tiebreakers for above: 1) total points earned; 2) total #1 votes; 3) placement on my ballot; 4) placement on @monkeysmadeofcheese’s ballot; 5) tie declared

The following method may be used in 2018 and will be conducted this year for experimental purposes only. It uses the instant-runoff voting (IRV) method (the Academy Awards uses this method to choose a Best Picture winner, visually represented here). It’s a bit confusing (and it’s probably best if you see the visual example), but here’s how it works:

All #1 picks from all voters are tabulated. A song needs more than half of all aggregate votes to win (fifty percent of all votes plus one).

If there is no winner after the first count (as is most likely... if there are thirty respondents, sixteen #1 votes are needed to win in the first count), the song with the fewest #1 votes is thrown out. We look at the The last-placed song’s ballots are then given to the remaining nominees according to the voters' #2 choice.

The process repeats, eliminating nominees and giving votes to the highest-ranked, non-eliminated song on each ballot. It is possible after several rounds of counting that respondents who did not entirely fill in their ballots will have wasted their votes at the end of the process (if a person voted the second-to-last place song as their #1, filled in no more slots, and the count has exceeded two rounds, they have no say in which song ultimately is the winner).

A song wins when it reaches more than fifty percent of their #1 and re-distributed votes.

Tiebreakers for experimental method: 1) first song to receive fifty percent of all votes +1; 2) total points earned; 3) total #1 votes; 4) placement on my ballot; 5) placement on @monkeysmadeofcheese​’s ballot ; 6) tie declared
