seven or eight times now ive watched the episodes in which they take the andromache and this is the first time ive realized that during the initial battle, after they board, every time the camera is from dufresne's perspective it's blurrier than otherwise because. he took his glasses off for the fight

#real velma hours #i have a soft spot for s1 dufresne that i dont have for s2 & 3 #part of it is that jannes bore a passing resemblance to a longtime mutual of mine so i feel like im watching someone i know #the other part is . well its like andy whitfield versus liam whatsisface when they were on spartacus #i dont know for sure bc they passed and that's the reason their characters were recast. but the actors have a different energy #from seasons one to seasons two and three. and i really wonder what jannes would have brought to dufresne's betrayal #roland reed's take is extremely bitter and self-preservationist #but from what we did get of jannes' performance i imagine his version would've been more confused and fear-based. jaded/feral #and i always think it really wouldve been something #black sails #q #everything about this battle sequence is a masterpiece. from the shot of joshua getting his false fangs ready to put in #to mr beauclerc's pile of like a dozen muskets up in the crow's nest. because it's 1715 snipers can't reload . he has to shoot #a different gun every time #to the way most pirate media glosses over the minutia of battle or even priacy in general because it's about the vibe the aesthetic #but sails' piracy is a means to an end and so its pirates are just like. guys with jobs #the minutia of their battle sequences even in their comparatively less insightful first season are INCREDIBLe. like o'brien levels of detai #and the camera work in this sequence! even on my thirteen-inch laptop screen where my show is on a nine-inch window #i am right there in it i feel like im watching it in 3d

The Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz getting an audio series is unexpected for me but not unwelcome. It'd be nice for those two to get a proper run as a duo. I was thinking of making predictions about the series, but then I realised I was just being a cynical sod and listing all the things Big Finish does that I don't like, so I won't do that (even though I'll probably be right about most of them).

I will say, though, that Big Finish is losing a lot of good will from me because of their pricing. They just spent years transitioning over to doing box sets for all their releases... and now they're starting to split up episodes produced as box sets to sell them separately - purely and shamelessly to sell them for 1.5 times the price.

This coming soon after Big Finish adjusted their download prices for inflation, means that their audios are now 3-4 times more expensive per hour than when I started buying them a decade ago. The Thirteen audios are just over $19 (Australian) each?? For 1 hour?? That, if I'm honest, I'll probably find almost entirely formulaic and just okay? I try my best to support Big Finish legally, but my god do they make it hard. I definitely won't be buying Thirteen and Yaz.

#I try to avoid making a post complaining. a criticism that i absolutely despise about thirteen is the "she's socially awkward, less confident, and more nervous about coming off as weird and this is out of character" take. because this ties into one of her defining character traits as an incarnation. yes all the doctors previous have been strange and offputting to some degree and have mainly not cared about coming off that way (save for ten, who mostly does want to come off as a friendly affable dude and asks if he's being rude sometimes but doesn't have moments where he's apologetic about his oddness in itself). but for thirteen her whole deal is that after twelve's dying wish was basically "ALWAYS BE NICE TO PEOPLE NO MATTER HOW MUCH ETERNAL RAGE AND SADNESS YOU KEEP IN YOUR SOUL" she tries to hide/repress any negative, less "presentable" sides of her from her close friends even when they can tell she's trying to hide it and are attempting to offer emotional support. she tries to be conscious of how she comes off after like, centuries of not really giving a fuck about this. and she clearly struggles with it and this is why she feels so fish-out-of-water in multiple different ways. it's not out of nowhere nor is it ooc (especially bc it was something you saw a little bit of with ten)

#ive seen this criticism in many different places and it . Annoys me! for many reasons.#5 hour chibnall hate video essay you were right about the companion character writing and the politics being bad but this is like #one of thirteen's most notable traits that also ties into the most interesting part of her character #'thirteen is oblivious human social conventions' like both eleven and twelve at MULTIPLE different points?#'thirteen is needy' Oh you mean like ten was needy? like ten had a scene where he was straight up talking to the air #bc he missed martha so bad and generally absolutely needs a companion with him lest he literally be driven insane?#dr who #13 era #the 'i'm very socially awkward' scene is so fucking bad though im not defending it
