I think it’s funny because it’s like the “uptight nerdy girl x delinquent bad boy” trope but better (yuri!!!)

And we have Millie who criticizes people doing stupid/dangerous things for fame learning about MK who does stupid shit for… fun? The thrill? Who IS this girl? MK is also a lot smarter than Millie gives her credit for, which confuses her even more. She’s sneaky, despite the blunt insults she gives to others… and has an interesting choice in alliances. Maybe Millie doesn’t know everyone as well as she thought.

Millie, to MK, isn’t so much a nerd as someone who plays the game better than she does. She made it into the TOP THREE by doing what MK said she was going to do, which was staying unnoticed. And she used Priya to sail through pretty much every challenge! (Well, Millie would never say she used Priya, but MK can admire the strategy.) Sending Damien down the 4 point slide was savage, but she can’t say she wouldn’t do worse to get out of a challenge.

They both aren’t very interested in making friends and are sarcastic and judgmental, and their slander of others led to their elimination. They both think they can bad-mouth people behind their back, but they can’t. They’re both lesbians also! I think they would make each other better/worse (pick one) They could fail miserably at challenges together 💗

But then what about the Hero turning into a Warrior, what about the Warrior revealing themselves to be a Hero instead????

Completely forgot I wrote something along the lines of "Macaque views MK as the person he used to think Wukong was", so reading this ask completely blindsided me AND hurt my feelings (post anon was referring to).

"I mean, she didn’t get any new material to work with." is also cracking me up holy shit. LMK is so dense, who even needs new material. I just rewatch any ep and have a breakdown about it. Tbh there are still so many things I haven't posted about (and the list keeps growing, god help me)

With MK's complacency, I will say that I think he's always been complacent in some way. Like it's definitely morphed into what you've described, but overall I think MK was never someone with high aspirations. He was always someone completely fine with being a noodle delivery boy, someone completely fine with what his life was before becoming the Monkey King's successor. And he's so real for that honestly

So earlier this morning, my friend MK sent me this fic, which hurt me deeply in all the best ways. However, since I have Renchanting/Treebark brainrot, I ended up being inspired to write something similar to answer the question "but what if Ren were there?"

So here it is, 1150 words of Martyn angst involving Ren and the end of Limited Life. Written in a mild fugue state, no betas, no nothing. Not STRICTLY Treebark but can easily be read that way. Too short for me to feel comfortable putting on AO3, but maybe I'll expand it into something fuller. Who knows?

"You did it, my dude!"

Martyn's head whips around to find the source of the voice. The last two other people on this void-forsaken server had just died by his hand—hell, Impulse's blood is still fresh on his blade. The only thing that should be left to congratulate him is the whistling of the wind through the blasted remains of the forest around him.

And yet there he is.

A few steps behind and to the right of Martyn is someone Martyn knows well. He hasn't seen him since the Double Life game; didn't get to see him enough, even then. Though Martyn knows he owns more than one set of clothes, he's dressed in what Martyn first met him in: a red shirt, blue jeans, black suspenders, dark shades. His brown ears are pricked forward in keen interest, and his tail swishes lazily behind him. He's grinning from ear to ear, and though Martyn can't see his blue eyes, he knows the smile reaches them.

"What?" Martyn manages to choke out. His throat has gone impossibly dry.

Ren spreads his arms in an expansive gesture, still grinning. "You did it! You won!"

A trickle of sweat winds its way down Martyn's neck and under his collar. In the distance, a bird chirps. His stomach churns. "That's not… you're not…"

"Not what?" Ren asks, tail pausing in its back-and-forth path.

"That's not how this works," Martyn says. "I get that, now. You don't win this. You're just—you're just the last to lose."

"That's not what you thought back in Third Life," Ren points out, gently.

"Yeah," Martyn scoffs. "And look where that got us. And even if we'd won, it would've just been us at each other's throats."

"It could've been honorable."

Martyn's eyes burn, and he blinks twice to try to get them to stop. They don't. "Didn't you see what just happened? I killed Scott before he even had a chance! There's no honor in any of this, don't you get it?"

Ren's expression turns melancholy: his grin fades and his ears and tail droop. "You don't believe that."

"The best of us always dies with you," Martyn spits. "And you weren't even here this time."

"I'm sorry, dude." Ren's apology barely rises above a whisper. "I wish I could've been there for you."

"I would've killed you." The words tumble out of Martyn's mouth before he can stop them. "I killed Scott like it was nothing. I would've killed you, too."

"I know," Ren says after a moment. "I knew from the beginning. If it came down to the two of us, I knew you wouldn't just let it be at that." He pauses, tilts his head a little as he appraises Martyn. "I think we both know I would've let you win."

Martyn scoffs again and he scrubs at his eyes with the heel of his palm. He's so tired. "Fat lot of good that would've done either of us."

"I'm sorry," Ren repeats. He reaches out, and Martyn recoils.

"You're not real. You can't be."

This statement, one that Martyn is sure will break the spell, barely seems to register. Ren merely shrugs. "I'm as real as you need me to be, dude."

"You should've been here!" Martyn finally shouts. He casts his bloodied sword aside as he takes a shaking step towards the image of Ren. "You should've been here, we should've made jokes about wet dog smell, you could've made a stupid coral crown, we could've all gone to war under the same banner!"

"I'm here now," Ren says, his words very tender. "Can't declare war on anyone, but you've still got some time left. We could watch the sunset together. Just like old times." He extends a hand.

Martyn stares at Ren's fingers; they look just as callosed as he remembers them. He can easily imagine what it would feel like to take that hand and use it to pull Ren closer. But giving into that desire would be just that little bit too far. Instead, he just lets out a breath. "Okay. Alright. I've got an hour and a half left. Might as well do something with it, and watching the sunset with a figment of my imagination is as good as anything else I can think of."

Ren's tail starts swishing again. Not as excitedly as it had been before, but it's no longer still. "Great! Where's the best place to watch on this server?"

"Most everywhere's been blown to bits," Martyn says, "but maybe we can still see something nice from the Clockers' tower."

When Ren doesn't object or supply an alternative, Martyn leads him in that direction. They make it to the top with no incident—if Scar had trapped it, the trap had worked in typical Scar fashion. The view is… not the best. The landscape is pock-marked by explosions and toppled structures, and the sky is criss-crossed by bridges and platforms used to enact the destruction.

If Ren minds, he doesn't say as such. Instead, he stares off into the distance. "Guess I missed a lot, huh?"

"You could say that." Martyn keeps his face forward, but he studies Ren's profile out of the corner of his eye. "Why are you here, anyway?"

Ren's focus on the distant landscape doesn't waver as he says, "Because you won."

"So… what, the game just pulls up a hallucination of the person I've been wanting to see this whole time just because I'm the last to lose?"

"I'm as real as you need me to be," Ren states again, this time turning to face Martyn. "Maybe I'm a figment of your imagination, or maybe I'm here because there wasn't any other way for us to see each other. What's it matter? I'm here now, and the sun's about to go down."

He's right, of course. The sun is slipping close to the horizon, casting long shadows over everything. The day is almost done, and so is Martyn's tenure as the game's 'winner.'

"You're right," Martyn sighs. "Let's just… enjoy what time we've got."

The minutes tick by. The sun creeps ever lower. Martyn's timer grows closer to the end. Finally, when the moon has risen, Ren turns to look at him.

"I'll see you again. You know that, right?"

Martyn breathes in a trembling breath. "That's what you said last time, and look where it got us."

"I'm here now, aren't I?"

"I guess so," Martyn says. "So, now what?"

"Now we wait. It won't be long now."

Martyn checks his timer. It won't be. There's only a few handfuls of seconds to spare. He could spend that time looking out at the carnage that the game had wrought on the world around them, or he could spend that time looking at Ren.

He makes his choice and he does not regret it.

His timer runs out.

LBAU Anon back at it. I’ve got a question for you for more brainrot. Namely, how much tinkering does Monkey King do with Little and Baby Brother’s minds? And second. Does Monkey King’s outfit change at all in the course of this? And even if our heroes could get MK out of there. Could they de Baby Brother him? Oh and lastly, that other anon made me think of wukong just going “leave.” And now the Spider clan are just Furret Walking around the globe. Cause he never told them to stop.

So ok, here's the thing, I feel like SWK messes with their heads way more than he realizes he does. Like, after Macaque showed that he was constantly fighting back and pushing against the brainwashing, SWK probably figured out he could leave triggers in his brother's head to like, push him back down or make him forget the last few seconds or things like that. Little things he could use to help keep Macaque from fighting back and help him be happy again. And he keeps finding little things to add, things maybe SWK doesn't even fully realize he's putting in, because he wasn't careful with his words like he should have been. (Since Macaque was his first 'big' project and the first time he'd done anything more than 'stop attacking people and go home and be a good person' type one time commands) So Liu Er has all of that going on, and he gets triggered by random stuff a lot. Then when Xiaotian got 'brought home', SWK had to add in a lot of stuff to make sure that nothing would trigger his old human memories until SWK got them to finally fade away entirely. (Through a mix of sending his Cub down under the music and helping encourage him to forget fairly often, and then commands to like, overwrite whatever might be in his head with his new 'real' memories) and he probably remembered how much Liu Er struggled at first and just dumped a bunch of those commands in off that bat. As for deliberate changes, there's putting Xiaotian down fairly regularly to scrub out his human life obviously, but while he's down SWK probably edits him a fair bit as well. With Macaque, SWK knew what Liu Er was like (or what his nostalgia said his little brother was like) and so he was just working to get Macaque back to that baseline. With Xiaotian, SWK doesn't have any sort of baseline. He's never had a cub before, or a 'baby' brother (since when Liu Er was that small he'd been fairly young as well) and so he's sort of picking and choosing which baby and childish traits he likes and which ones he doesn't and trying things out and putting thing in then taking them away again if he changes his mind. There's some stuff that he see's as being 'Xiaotian' and he left alone, like how optimistic and bright Xiaotian is, or how forgiving, but everything else is basically fair game. On Macaque's end, he had to get edited to be ok with having a Baby Brother, because with how dependent and needy SWK had made him, when 'Big Brother' was spending all this time with a new little brother, Liu Er straight up thought he was getting replaced and was going to 'run away' to the other side of the mountain so he didn't have to listen to SWK tell him that to his face. (only the other side of the mountain because Liu Er is incapable of realizing there's anywhere but FFM. SWK will NOT let his Little Brother leave him again) So he needs some editing to make sure he takes care of their Baby Brother properly but other than that SWK isn't consciously making too many edits to Macaque at this point. Liu Er is his completed project as it were

As for SWK's outfit, I think it wold slowly go back closer to the types of things he wore during his old warlord time. Fancier, more traditional, and he dresses his little brothers to match. More dark reds that are closer to black or dried blood than the bright ones, and the gold is sharper somehow. But he doesn't wear his armor as much (because then his Cub can't cuddle up to him as well)

And The Hero's saving Xiaotian is... going to depend. Mostly on how soon they can get him, and how much of his memory has been completely lost and overwritten instead of just suppressed. Bottom like, Xiaotian is not going to be ok, and he's never going to be able to 'go back to normal', even if the whole thing hadn't technically been massively traumatizing. There's a certain level of regression that I don't think he's going to be able to just 'get over' and his fine motor control is shot. He's also not going to be able to handle being alone very well, because he was never alone. Starting to freak out if he doesn't get physical contact is also probably going to be a thing. If they manage to save him before there's nothing left but 'Baby Brother' and 'Little Cub' he's going to feel very much like a child trapped in an adult's body. (Age varying based on when they save him) He's going to know it's not right, and that he's not supposed to be like this, but he can't change it, and thing are going to be so confusing and people keep expecting things from him that he just can't DO and it's hard and he feels guilty all of the time and a part of him just want's his Big Brother to come back and make everything better and help him be happy and feel good again. And the mental image of the poor Spider Clan is kinda funny. I think SWK is a bit to practical and cautious about how he uses the music by this point, (because he doesn't want to get caught a part of him knows what he's doing isn't right and that people would stop him, but if they do that he'll loose his Little Brother and that isn't an option) so that's probably not how it ended up, but I love the thought of it.

okaayyy so first is mk right so abt mk's vision,, mk is like the last in the little hero group to get a vision. hes been tryin for SO LONG to get one and ever since mei got hers hes been kinda more driven to get one himself. he knows theres like- special circumstances involved n hes been tryin to like get that cool thing to happen so they can get theirs but,,, nothins worked yet yknow mk like tries to make guess abt what vision theyre gonna get one day and mei thinks mk is gonna get pyro and like woah cool just like his da-- i mean pigsy!!! so hes not sayin itd be his one and only choice but thinkin about it and what tang has said abt visions he thinks pyro is def possible bc hes real passionate about a lot of things!! like his job and his friendships and MONKEY KING LORE and yknow all that good stuff so he gets it after doin somethin similar to the big fight at the end of a hero is born just- beatin' the SHIT out dbk ig along with his friends and while hes there and struggling but knowin he has to defeat this guy for the sake of everyone he ends up getting his vision and he doesnt focus on the element too much (it does end up being geo) at first its more just HOW TF DO I USE THIS NOW.. but he ends up doin somethin real wacky and BOOM dbk gone 4 now and like after all that is over n we're back to chilling he and the others r like celebrating bc WOO mk got his vision AND we defeating a huge demon!! and mei is like huh i really thought u were gonna get pyro like me and tang is like pushes up glasses well acTUALLY-- and proceeds to explain why geo visions r given to people and all that and while mk does have a lot of passion which would make it make sense 4 him to have a pyro vision hes far more hardworking with his job already and now that hes monkey kid hes gonna b working even harder to protect people mk's been working hard all his life really, not just with his job and now defeating demons, hes been working hard to get a vision so he could be something greater, his bio parents he doesnt remember much about but they were always so unimpressed and demanding so he tried real hard to live up to their expectations and make them happy because he wants his friends and family 2 be happy,, and hes always tried hard to be something more than what he is as he got older and all the monkey king stories really inspired him a lot and thats why hes loved all this lore and stuff for so many years but like,, he could never be a hero like that,,, oh wait anywho mk is a geo polearm(?) user, dunno if ya could call the staff a polearm buuut thats what im goin' with hes also got monkey king's abilities along with the geo ones so ohu boy,, ill talk more abt that part when i get to wukong and mac ALSO I FEEL LIKE MK COULD ALSO BE PYRO AND I COULD CHANGE IT BUT,, I LIKE GEO TOO,,,, oops all pyro traffic light trio????

i dont got much for red son either buuut heres what i do got; red son kinda already has,, magic of sorts bc,, yknow partial demon (in this hes only like,, half technically. yknow how yanfei is like half adeptus-) but its amplified a bunch by the vision and WOO FIRE and theyre a pyro catalyst honestly debating on whether or not they wold have a book or whatever that other floaty thingy is called but like when i imagine either they kinda look similar to dodoco tales or blackcliff agate hmm,, red's two big passions are building and cooking- his tech could possibly rival that of fontaine's advancements if he wanted it to,, they actually take some inspiration from the works of fontaine as well as for the cooking, u already know, spice master. i want a cooking battle with them and xiangling- they'd laugh at the hottest option on the menu at wanmin red son got their vision pretty early in life- a bit older than he was in canon,, which was still a problemmm and ya can guess why,, demon power fire element amplification little tempermental fire demon boy go boom boom samadhi fire or somethin,, so yeah theyre not as powerful as they could be and the vision was actually taken from them until they were older and more mature i suppose red doesnt remember this- they think they got their vision at an older age since it kinda just appeared by him one morning

tang is dendro but like he doesnt fight so he hasnt found a weapon yet- i think itd be real funny if he was a CLAYMORE or maybe a sword bc of that one episode yknow the one,, but honestly catalyst could work too and hed def have a book one if so dont got a backstory or vision story for him either :( nor do i have much for pigsy but pyro,, somethin. y'all can add to pigsy's stuff if ya want i also feel bad for not havin anything for him but passion = cooking woo

now to the two givin me the most trouble,,,, wukong and macaque i didnt think too much abt what visions macaque and wukong would have bc like,, they have a lot of powers that could fit each vision really and i was like "AUGH should wukong be pyro or geo or maybe anemo???" and like "should macaque be cryo maybe but agghh electro could also fit but GAH" could they be like,, adepti maybe?? m not sure,, im thinkin adepti with no like specified element but aaauuggh or maybe its a traveler sort of deal with like all the elements but i like the adeptus thing a bit more- then again uhh genshin lore,,,,, yeah i can not keep up with all of it</3 so if it makes no sense it makes no sense,, y'all might have 2 catch me up if somehow they wouldnt b able to be adepti but i still wanna keep somethin similar to monkey king's whole story n whatnot,,

last thing uh,, mk part adeptus or at least starting to match adeptal power now that hes got the staff and monkey king powers?? not sure again genshin lore is,, tricky and then that plus the geo vision

im not gonna let myself keep going on and on and on for too long, or else this post’ll never get made, but this isn't. like. Everything. brain is just scrampled egg rn so these r a little all over the place but. w/e here r the first “favorite” books that’ve come 2 my mind:

- Spider-Man 2099 (1992) big surprise, i know. lay off! it was my first comic! looking back on it, i probably shouldn't have been reading it as, like. a 9-10(??) year old kid. but. y’know. pish-posh. when the chips’re down, sm2099 was what i had during a real rough time that spanned years without letup, and as a result sm2099 has been a Really Important Thing for me ever since. has the relative decade’s worth of Enrichment ultimately also been worth the requisite Nigh-Obsessive Brainrot? 🤷 i’unno. i’m predisposed to say “well, duh, dude, no shit it has been,” so that's that.

- Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man (1995) duh. (in seriousness: fun romp of a one-shot, nd i really like that mig and mj were kinda-friends,., .,,.,)

- Moon Knight (1980) MK v1 was the run that REALLY got me into comic books as something more than just a passive casual interest, back in, uhh-- early-early 2020, i think? it definitely... shows its age in not a great way, at times, but otherwise i can’t help but feel a fond affection for the first volume of MK. (Plus, on the art side of things, it’s really cool to see Bill Sienkiewicz developing his iconic signature style over the course of the run!!!)

- Immortal Hulk: The Threshing Place (2020) .......and tbh, every other Immortal Hulk one-shot, as well, but. Threshing Place especially has some just gorgeous art. I can’t stomach visual body horror very well most of the time, but I otherwise really like what I've been able to read of Immortal Hulk.

- Ms. Marvel (2014) genuinely a really good book and also the only Inhumans thing i like (in no small part, im sure, because there is not a lot of Inhumans stuff in it). starting to run out of spoons at this point so i’m just gonna be blunt if u hate kamala khan Fuck You

- Unbelievable Gwenpool (2016) unbelievable gwenpool is Good it’s a Good Comic marvel has just been absolutely massacring the character ever since it ended. in 2019 the Defiler leah williams took poor gwennie out behind the barn and basically just shot her in the back of the fucking head. we will probably never see the character in any significant or serious capacity ever again :(

- Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane (1958-1973) culturally important to the medium of superhero comic books As We Know Them Today. also generally batshit insane to an objectively hilarious degree ❤️

+ honorable mention(s): that one green lantern story where hal jordan slipped on a bar of soap and bumped his head so hard he not only  was immediately rendered unconscious but then also fell promptly into a coma.

ALSO Blue Beetle (2006) it's been so long that i barely remember what happens in it but i Do Remember that it was Good. i really need to reread the run sometime soon...
