Flint and Steel no longer functions when used in a Dispenser in the Aether, and can now ignite all explosives, not just TNT, when used in a Dispenser. Additionally, a bug has been fixed where Flint and Steel in a Dispenser would not lose durability when igniting TNT (MC-124991).

Fire charges shot out of Dispensers will no longer ignite blocks in the Aether. However, mobs can still be damaged and set on fire by them.

The Ignition Ring and Volcanite Amulet projectiles can no longer create fire or lava in the Aether. Additionally, the Ring of Arcana fire projectiles no longer create fire in the Aether. However, mobs can still be damaged and set on fire by these projectiles.

Increased the chance for a Repair Talisman to be found in a Woodland Mansion chest.

A warning is no longer shown when using an outdated version of Java, which fixes the issue where this warning would often be inaccurate. A warning is still shown when using 32-bit Java.

Slightly increased the delay before the darkness damage in the Dark Realm begins.

White Apples no longer have an EMC value.

Removed the crash report URL in the VanillaFix config since it’s been down for a year and a half now and it’s not clear if the developers even own the domain name anymore. I’m looking into alternatives to re-implement this functionality in some form at some point in the future.

Known issues:

The Whitening, Darkening, and Blue potion effects given when eating Sprouts do not render properly on players unless status effect particles are enabled via the toggle keybind.

Bouncing with Knightslime Boots no longer resets fall damage with each bounce. As a result, when holding the sneak key while bouncing with Knightslime Boots, a potentially much larger amount of fall damage is applied. Normal Slime Boots, Magma Slime Boots, and Congealed Blood Boots are unaffected by this.

Bouncing with Knightslime Boots on a server creates a huge amount of log spam because of this issue.

NOTICE: Worlds created in earlier versions of ZackPack are not guaranteed to work properly with this update. Creating a new world is highly recommended.

It’s OC-Tober! And I’m following @oc-growth-and-development‘s prompt list; today’s prompt was “Medicine”

POV: 3rd Person Warnings: Death/Disease Mention Word Count: 216

When Wyrm came into being, she brought with her the very concept of “living”, from a newborn’s first breath to an old man’s last one, from the very first cell to the time when, unfathomably many years later, the last living thing would die.

Sometimes, that made her seem more benign than her brethren; everyone could imagine that Blaze’s wrath might burn their skin like a wildfire, that Zephyr’s anger could flatten their houses like a storm. But healing? Life? Few people believed her capable of doing harm.

Some would learn better.

An elf asking for eternal life, aging decades in the span of minutes. A child wanting to be the tallest and strongest, cursed to never grow older. A human demanding her powers, soon fallen ill with a sickness no medicine could cure, be it ordinary or magical.

Wyrm was, perhaps, a little gentler, a bit more patient than other primal dragons, and most who found her left unscathed. They did, after all, carry a little of her within them.

But she was not kind.

She was a fact. A facet of nature. Just like all her siblings.

People might care about morality, about the concepts of “right” and “wrong”, but Life did not; neither did Wyrm. And forgetting that was a dangerous thing indeed.

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus rewritten pt. 2

Here is part 2.

After giving an update to Talwyn , Qwark calls the duo saying that the planet he is on is under attack by the Nethers and ask Ratchet and Clank to help. While in the planet the duo discover the Nethers are trying to help Mr. Eye find the location of the real Dimensionator by attacking information centers, so the two and Qwark go to deactivate the planet’s connection to the holonet to stop the Nethers from finding it, which it does but this only buys the heroes some time. The three are almost killed by a Nether but Neftin appears and defeats it, surprising them. Neftin tells them he has a plan to defeat the Nethers and tells the 3 to meet him on Thram. After arriving on Thram and acquiring some horns for the Smuggler so he can activate hoverboot platforms and jetpack refueling stations, Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark eventually get to Neftin’s harder to get to ship, where Neftin tells them that if Ratchet and Clank can get the Dimensionator for him and Pollyx, they can fix it and thus use it to banish the Nethers back to there dimension as well as save Vendra. Ratchet says he will do this if he and Vendra turn themselves in as well as allow Qwark to stay behind to keep an eye on him and Pollyx which Neftin agrees and gives the duo the code need to get the Dimesionator out of its display case but they will need help getting through the museum defenses. Ratchet and Clank go to the Intergalactic Museum of History where after the Talchet hug and Talwyn still missing Cronk and Zephyr scene even having a memorable plaque made for them, Talwyn says that they duo will need to take the museum tour to get to the Dimensionator while she tries to disable the security system as its revealed that the museums is closed and Qwark forgot the password to turn it off.

I can see many changes to the museum that can make it more fun visually and gameplay wise. One improvement is not having to carry a tourbot around with you, instead you follow it from room to room while it talks about displays when you walk over holograms of it. Another change is having a few more rooms to explore like a Galactic map wing where your learn about some planets of the Polaris Galaxy like how planet Reepor has been turned into a junkyard after Tachyon’s defeat, a creature wing filled with Polaris creatures seen since TOD, and a “Mysteries of the Universe” wing where it contains displays of mysterious items scientist are confused by, but are really just references to other PlayStation video game series like an Ottsel skeleton and Precursor egg, a hieroglyphic of Sly Cooper’s cane, and a drawing of an adult Spyro the Dragon. I also have some ideas for some of the existing rooms, one being to make them more challenging as Qwark said the place was impenetrable yet there wasn’t much security there. One idea is having to fight guards in the Groovitron room where once in awhile the Groovitrons in the room can cause the enemies to dance, allowing you to defeat them with ease. Another is having more items in the Lombax room such as the blue Lombax artifact from TOD, having a replica of Azimuth’s ship, and a Alpha Cannon, which you could actually acquire for your arsenal if you hit all the hidden buttons in the museum. Also once Ratchet grabs the Dimesionator I can see him and Clank activating a security system where they fight waves of enemies, including a strong Blaze bot, maybe there is a funny moment where after defeating the Blaze bot 3 more come out and when it looks like there going to destroy the duo till they are deactivated by Talwyn.

With the Dimesionator on hand Ratchet and Clank meet Neftin, Qwark, and Pollyx at the museum’s gift shop where they give it to them, but just like in the original the Nethers start attacking the city trying to find it and thus Ratchet tries to distract the forces while the others fix it. Ratchet first takes out the Nether leaders but he then gets a message from Talwyn saying that Nethers are attacking the building they are hiding in so the duo go and take them out and once they finish fixing the Dimesionator allow Clank to go save Vendra while Ratchet takes the Dimensionator and tries to get away from Mr. Eye but eventually fights him head on in order to protect it. During the Clank sections, I can see Vendra telling the story of Mr. Eye, as he really could have used some development in the game. Turns outs once ever few generations a Nether is born with the ability to reach a Nethers true form (as they usually stop at there Netherbrute stage) and at that form they are given great power which is usually used to replenish the barren Netherverse at the cost of there life, however Mr. Eye decide to us his power to conquer. This caused Vendra and Neftin’s parents to sent them to Ratchet’s dimesion to be safe from him and though Mr. Eye was angry with this, he eventually realized he could use them to enter and eventually conquer that dimension.

Clank saves Vendra and after Ratchet wounds Mr. Eye, he uses the Dimensionator to bring Clank and Vendra back and open a portal to the Netherverse where with Vendra’s powers, is able to cause the portal to suck in all of the Nethers including Mr. Eye though this time his protective gear gets torn off causing him to start dying but luckily the portal closes before he combusts. With Mr. Eye dead, Vendra loses her powers and falls but Neftin catches her and after a warm moment between the siblings Neftin takes her to jail while Ratchet, Clank, Talwyn, and Qwark stare confused till Clank shrugs it off. The game then cuts to the museum where after we see a scene of Talwyn laying down the memorial plague at the Cronk and Zephyr display we see Clank walk up to Ratchet where Ratchet reveals that the Dimesionator is broken again but laughs it off. Clank then ask the question of if Ratchet would use the Dimesinator to see the Lombaxes, Ratchet says no saying there more for him here then there followed with more people he loves, looking at Talwyn when he says love. Ratchet tells Clanks they should join with Talwyn but while Ratchet’s back its turned, Clank grabs the Dimesinator hinting its use in future games.

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.

“We want your help,” asked the Prodigies as they all frowned at the relaxed grin on Cardinal Changeling’s face. The Titan of War of the Alpha Centurion War slowly looked at them taking in everything before he/she/they shook his/her/their head with disappointment. Cardinal Scarlet Shapeshifter still had dignity as founder of the Elites and the Paragons. The Prodigies had not comprehended his/her/their earlier words. “No,” he/she/they replied. Rebecca shook her head. She could not help but wonder what more this person wanted from them. “You owe us,” she snarled with her half demonic powers as her two eyes became two red eyed slits glowing with demonic energy. She exuded angelic and demonic power as a nephalem. There was a change in the atmosphere that the Prodigies ultimately became conscious of. It was getting colder and they felt their combat and power armor suits weren’t up to par anymore. The chill up their spines scared all of them. It was like someone was watching them and that someone was well above them. The indifferent eyes that shapeshifted from ruby, emerald, to indigo that seemed to pierce through each of their very souls seemed to be the cause. “Do I?” “Do I owe any of you Prodigies anything?” He/she/they asked coldly. “How can I owe you anything Prodigies?” Keondr Kojix quivered and clenched her teeth and her fists that were blazing malachite with energy blasts in fear to defend herself. It was the command and strength of someone or something stronger that transparently told them that they were all weak. The cold green, blue, or red eyes were back. There was a reason why he/she/they were known as the Champion of Terra, the Warlord of the Vega System, the Liberator of the Sol System, the Destroyer of the Polaris System, the Savior of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Conqueror of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Devil of the Zephyr Nebula, & the Fallen God of the Romulus Nebula. The Prodigies trembled again. He/she/they looked godlike, divine, or supernatural. They eyes of the truly strong.

Analysis

Legault debuted nearly a year ago alongside other Black Fangs compatriots as the latest colorless dagger with an interesting dagger and unusual base kit. While his Atk and defenses are midline his high Spd has yet to be matched by any other dagger since his release. Now a year later Legault still remains one of the fastest, readily accessible daggers in the 3-4* summoning pool.

Legault, like many daggers, optimizes his offenses over his defenses. His defensive stats leave little to the imagination starting at 24/19 Def/Res. However with his offense stats starting at 31/38 Atk/Spd Legault can easily push these stats further with refines and skills readily accessible in the 3-4* summoning pool such as Life and Death and Fury.

His weapon of choice, The Cleaner+, also helps in this regard. The Cleaner+ will add additional damage based on how many bonuses (buffs from Hone, Fortify, Rally, etc) are present on a foe. This means that if a foe Legault attacks has a +6 buff to their Atk, Legault gains an additional +6 damage. This effect has mixed results; while the more buffs a foe has equals more damage for Legault, one must also be cautious as these enemy buffs could just as easily spell Legault’s doom. On teams that fail to run buffing skills this dagger’s effect will not come into play at all. Therefore it’s best to pair Legault with teammates that can support him with their own buffs and help escort him back to safety after defeating an opponent.

His base kit is rather mixed containing skills that benefit his allies and yet fail to benefit himself. Atk Tactic is a great support skill and allows Legault to easily integrate into mixed teams. Swift Strike on the other hand does little for Legault other than provide him an extra 4 Spd when he initiates combat. The additional +4 Res he obtains is negligible at best only bringing it up to 23 Res in combat. It’s for this reason that his A skill be swapped out for another skill. His special, Glimmer, relies on his foes being buffed granting him extra damage that he can then use to boost his Glimmer damage. For this reason it’s recommended that his special be swapped out for something else.

Builds

Budget/Low Investment:

With plenty of offensive skills readily accessible in both the summoning pool and past GHB units Legault can make do with minimal investment.

In the set on the left we stack both Swift Sparrow and Sturdy Blow to help net more damage, make ourselves covertly fast and bulkier than we seem. Swift Sparrow will grant +4 Atk/Spd while Sturdy Blow will grant Atk/Def+4 should he initiate combat. Combined with a Spd refined dagger this pushes Legault’s stats up to 51/44/28 Atk/Spd/Def without any further buffs.

The set on the right works in a similar fashion except here we use both Death Blow and Darting Blow to make a budget Swift Sparrow setup. Death Blow will provide +6 Atk while Darting Blow will grant +6 Spd if Legault initiates combat. Combined with an Atk refine to his dagger this pushes his offenses to a respectable 50/44 Atk/Spd.

Desperation will allow him to make multiple follow-up attacks once below or at 75% of his base HP. Moonbow will reduce a foe’s Def/Res by 30% once it activates making it easier to take care of foes with higher Def.

Legault’s seal options include: Atk+3, Spd+3, Atk/Spd 2, Darting Blow, Sturdy Blow, Flashing Blade, Bond skills, and Quickened Pulse.

Player Phase:

Legault should be built with his offenses in mind and with a wide range of daggers to choose from he has his options when it comes to player phase setups.

The set on the left decks Legault out to be a dragon counter. With dragons posing a considerable threat in the current meta having a counter to them is proving more crucial than ever. Cloud Maiougi+ grants effectiveness against dragons however this weapon cannot be used in combination with popular player phase skills such as Desperation or Vantage as this dagger ignores these skill’s effects completely. Instead we take Watersweep as his B skill which will allow Legault to hit his opponent once freely if they use magic (tome, staff, dragon) and have 1 less Spd than him. Phantom Spd will only increase Legault’s Spd gap adding an invisible +10 Spd if Watersweep’s effect is active. This means that both dragon and other magic foes will have to have a massive 55 Spd to avoid a free hit from Legault.

The set on the right meanwhile focuses on your basic Fury/Desperation setup. Fury grants +3 to each stat in exchange for dealing 6 damage after combat. This helps set up Desperation which will allow Legault to make his follow-up attack immediately after the first hit. Because Legault has the highest Spd of an infantry dagger he can easily run Flashing Blade to help reduce his special cooldown charge. Barb Shuriken+ will reduce a special’s cooldown by -1 turning Luna into a 2 turn special. This means that once Legault falls into Desperation’s range he’ll be able to activate Luna every fight on his follow-up attack effectively taking out opponents. Savage Blow acts as chip damage softening his foes up for his allies or himself.

High Investment:

As an infantry dagger unit Legault has access to some of the most powerful skills currently in game. The following sets are best intended for players who plan on fully merging Legault.

The set on the left combines Special Spiral and the Starfish dagger for a deadly combination. Starfish+ has Desperation built into it freeing up Legault’s B skill. We take Special Spiral as his B so that we can set up an AOE chain with Flashing Blade as the seal and Growing Wind as the special. Growing Wind is a 4 turn cooldown special. Special Spiral will reduce a unit’s special by -2 if said unit activated their special in combat. This means that if Legault activates Growing Wind, after combat his cooldown charge for this special will reduce to 1 instead of just 3. We can take this a step further and have his special always active with Flashing Blade which in combat will reduce his special by -1. This means that if Legault activates it and has more Spd than his foe, he’ll always have Growing Wind up and ready to go. Joint Hone Atk is taken for its +5 Atk buff given to both Legault and any adjacent allies.

The set on the right focuses on making the best out of Legault’s high Spd. Red-Hot Ducks+ will add a max of +7 extra damage if Legault is faster than his opponent. Bonus Doubler meanwhile will add any bonuses on a unit’s stats to said stat while in combat. This means that if Legault has Even Atk Wave and Even Def Wave up for +6 Atk/Def, he’ll receive an additional +6 Atk/Def while in combat. This is done to maximize his damage output and making him bulkier than he seems. Null Follow-Up meanwhile will negate skills such as Vengeful Fighter, Daggerbreaker, Quick Riposte and Desperation making it so that foes that wish to take him out will either have to attack him through brute force or be faster than him. To best utilize this set it’s recommended he be paired with allies that can further buff his skills or refresher units such as Legendary Azura.

Turn 1 Special:

Earlier this year daggers gained access to the unique Ouch Pouch+ dagger which reduces a special’s cooldown by -2 versus Barb Shuriken’s -1 cooldown charge. This made it easier for dagger infantry to effectively have Turn 1 Specials ready to go.

While Legault can be run on an Infantry Pulse team to achieve the same goal as displayed above he may also achieve a Turn 1 special on his own. Here we have Blazing Wind as his special of choice which has a 4 turn cooldown. Ouch Pouch will reduce this cooldown by -2. Then Time’s Pulse will reduce this cooldown by -1. Finally Quickened Pulse will reduce the cooldown again by -1 effectively having Blazing Wind ready on Legault’s first turn. Unlike with Infantry Pulse this special cooldown charge is not affected by a unit’s HP and is instantaneous. Fury 4 is taken to help bulk up Legault’s stats by +4. Lull Atk/Def is taken to help soften up foes, inflicting Atk/Def -3 while nullifying any visible buffs to Atk/Def on said opponents.

5. In your story, are there more close relationships between family, or between friends? Talk about one of these relationships, and why they’re so close.

As much as I love writing and reading about siblings, Tears of Iron is filled with close friendships fundamental to the character journeyes. Skye and Zephyr brought Hal back from his slumber and returned hope and will to live again. Then Hal shared with them the knowdlge of the lost Art of dragon knights and together with Leander they made a new order together, a special magical school on the Flying Islands. These four were incredibly tight before their fallout 5 years ago and will have to fight tooth and nail to get back together again.

10. Are there any relationships in your story where one primarily “protects” the other? Do they protect this person physically, or do they keep secrets for the sake of the other’s well-being? Does this take an emotional toll on them?

Zephyr is the protector and leader of the others, the shining honroubale knight in armor, with blazing ideals but also endless patience and compassion that makes him the perfect mediator, connector and leader.

But who protects the protector? Leander. They grew up together as rivals and best friends and Leander took it upon himself to be to Zephyr what Zephyr is to the world. That's why in any situation, Zephyr is the one making the morally highest choices while Leander might see selfish, cause he only cares about Zephyr and the cost of his next mission.

Yarin the Fire Keeper

This ones lore is inspired by this story https://hungrytundras.tumblr.com/post/188161606160/madrigalism-fr-imagine-a-guardian-whose-charge I felt the Guaridan needed to exist :) The Flame Guarian At a very young age he felt the call for his charge. Scarcely old enough to fly he found his charge on a lonely hill within the Zephyr Steps. There he began his watch, tending and keeping the flame roaring even in the harshest weathers. Years passed and he dutifully kept his charge safe. Greeting travelers that would stop by and rest before continuing their journey. Over time these travelers began leaving gifts on the edge of the road for him. He welcomed the gifts they left for that meant less time away from his charge. One of these gifts was a flamecrest fiendcat that helped him stoke the flames when they began to dim. When the storm ravaged him and his precious fire he thought with certainty he had failed in his duty. Then the others came dragons from all around building him and his beloved charge a wonderful inn where they were safe and warm. Now that inn still remains open to any who need a place to rest. The blazing fire roaring warmly in the hearth its ever faithful Guardian watching over it. It is a waystation for all of the merchants of the Windsong Clan he is always welcoming them with his charge and warm food and drink before they continue on their journeys to the markets and other settlements. He often finds himself in the company of Maiya the energetic merchant always ready with a tale from the road she frequents his establishment more than most of the others. Her and her gold throated sparrow livening up the inn with beautiful song.

Infernal

The Force binds every part of the galaxy together. A single room cannot contain it within mere walls.

A/N: On the one hand, writing Anakin having meltdowns is fun because I get to go ham on the over the top sandstorm metaphors and there is basically no limit to how dramatic I make it save my own inability to write anything beyond a certain level of intensity.

On the other hand, settle the hell down, Ani.

Warnings for discussion of pain and injury, mention of death.

In a single blazing moment he will learn what he has wrought, and it may destroy him.

In the flames his violent heart has thrown into the dry kindling of a crumbling world around him, he will see the disasters that have befallen us all because of him.

In the afterglow of his implosion the embers of his downfall will scatter in the world and settle to the ground, awaiting his lashing out, the final cruelty of this most powerful of Sith Lords.

And we will all stand braced and awaiting his wrath, alive and dead, lost and found in the Force. We will watch the furnace swell and consume like the dark heart of a star bursting free of its plasma cage.

We will watch the son of suns explode.

And we will beg of his mother, with her ash-streaked hair and her broken, inhuman smile, that we do not all unravel as he tears the galaxy apart.

Visions ached like any war wound.

She was alive, she’d live. Twins. Ghostly cries still rang in his head, a cosmic storm beyond the stars that stained his eyelids. Her fingers tightened around his nothing more to fear.

The cold whispers were not him. The walls bowed under the weight, coalescing around the fires in his flesh, Obi-Wan’s not the only one here choking them to smoke.

His vision refocused on Padmé. Her brown eyes stared up, wide open in the same shock that the two children what world will they grow up in that the medical droid still held swaddled in off-white blankets one without masters shared.

“…Anakin?”

She knew him.

Though the fires that had torn through his flesh, she knew him.

“Yes.” Shivering fingers, the dust between stars contained by cold gravity, laced with hers. The golden afterglow of the stars they’d been born under held them tight. “You’re going to live, Padmé.”

“The child…”

“Children.” He leaned forward, the breeze between planets catching in his teeth. “They’re twins.”

“Twins?” Eyelids fluttered with the exertion of her speech.

He nodded.

“Can I…”

The droid brushed against Anakin’s over-wide robe like it had been pulled there, whisper-songs echoing as it held the two swaddled babies they will be safe out to Padmé. No more scars. No whips, no chains, no cages. A hand caught her shoulder as she sat up, shaking with the feeble effort. She flinched from the glow, but the droid moved forward, and though he could still feel her shudders what is there to be afraid of now her mouth turned up as she reached out to touch her children.

They shone as bright as he did in the galaxy’s web of matter.

“Oh…” Her smile brightened, strengthened as she took the children in her lap. Golden zephyrs made him glow brighter for a flash of a moment as he watched.

Sparking white like a bottled fire shattered the air. He froze someone’s outside. Heat cracked the fractures in the fabric of the room wider open. The transparent wall out to the corridor shimmered with low light and the haze of his stinging, soot-smeared eyes, but there were figures beyond it, moving, watching. A blaze like Obi-Wan’s slumped presence, hesitant outside who else made it out alive?

Something shuddered beneath his hand. Her head turned. He followed her gaze to the corner of the room, where Obi-Wan had fallen. “Ani…” Then a gasp.

No! “You’re safe, Padmé. You’ll live.” A feverish wordspring, gasping reassurance how hollow is it now as spectral fingers tightened. Careful, careful. No scars for the angel even if I’m made of them now. “Everything will be okay.”

“Obi-Wan…” Bright mist in her eyes fear against the shielding glass of their whites.

“Padmé, no…” Hurried shakes of his head. Soot in his throat again, charring already scorched flesh. “He’s alive. He’s alive. But he… he blacked out. When the droid said you were going into labour…” Hissing whispers scraped against the medbay’s calm, Mustafar’s simmering breeze in places it did not belong. Padmé’s jaw had lost its tension. There is no passion, there is serenity. “He’s alive. I promise you.”

She nodded. Dark eyes turned away from his gaze what is she seeing now to return to the twins. Their twins, their children, but if she won’t look at me —

“Who are you?”

He blinked, pushed away the darkness in his thoughts to the searing whitelight as a figure filled the door. Familiar. Ripples of something twisting and calculating in the void-warm glow of the Force. Bail Organa. Fists tightened, metal crunching. “What are you doing here?” Weak whispers, drawn from a broken throat but I’ve been mute before that vanished into the hum of the droids that hovered out of the way, their buzzing circuits background noise to every far-flung sound that rang in his head from everywhere and nowhere.

“I rescued Obi-Wan and Yoda from the betrayal of the clones, and joined Obi-Wan here after hearing about Padmé.” A hand drifted towards a blaster. Narrowing eyes. As he hesitated, breaths rough against a tortured throat, shattered lungs, the Senator’s gaze turned to the corner of the room turned to the corner of the room, then darkened as he drew his blaster.

He lifted a ghost-warm hand he’ll be the only one hurt but no words passed in the air before the blaster fired. Wild heat congealed between them, frozen into coherent form, frozen in place. Air rushed through him, a sandstorm seeking dust and decay to spin into the air. “Obi-Wan is alive. He blacked out. I don’t know why.”

“Who are you?”

His words rose higher now, fraying at the edges. The storm of a Senator’s anger compacted, drawing tighter as if it no longer dared approach him. “We know each other.” One of Padmé’s best allies in the Senate. But how many identifying features — the smile, the scars, the Jedi uniform — had been cremated by the aftermath of Mustafar’s forge and the void-hot presence of the Force keeping him standing despite Obi-Wan taking both his legs off?

“Bail…” Padmé’s voice cracked like a whip above his head. Shivers made his ice-glass skin flicker. “It’s Anakin.”

Another hand settled on the blaster, but shaking, shaking with a weakened spine and a storm below his skin, one of tearing power that found an echo in the thermonuclear furnace where dragons and serpents are they gone now or just asleep tore dirt off the ground and threw it into the howling space between stars.

“From what Obi-Wan said there’s no way he should have survived Mustafar.”

The words were stronger because they’re true but the blaster didn’t steady. Red pain still simmering in the air between them. He let his hand fall, slowly, mind still fixed on that bar of light. “I can’t explain it either.”

A shake of the head. “What’s happened to you? You’re half burn scars and half hologram.”

Was that what he looked like now what else would people who don’t know this supernova see to Bail — to Padmé? How had she known him when Bail hadn’t, when his old Master hadn’t but no more masters. No chains, no cages.

“Deal with this I must, Senator. Beyond your abilities this matter is.”

Bail didn’t let the blaster fall, but he stepped sideways, away from the door, closer to Padmé.

Somewhere below the folded cloak his chest rose and fell, but it didn’t trap air, just sharp stabbing pieces of something vital. Of all the people who could have survived… of course it would be the Grand Master of the Jedi Order did his clones even turn on him who was here to judge him now. The red blast in the air sputtered into nothing in a clenched fist, held as if to shield his heart, the glove hiding the metal arm, the one that the Masters had stared at with sighs in their throats is that what makes me less than human still. Through speckled vision the stooped figure of the Master of Masters never again entered the room. His ears turned down as he glared at Anakin.

Something dark like the hidden heart of a kyber star caught fire, burst through the sandstorm and through rime skin to fill the room with the spittings of the furnace that had forged his flesh anew. Below the storm he heard a muted chirp, an unfamiliar sound on a tongue not broken to a language yet. What world will they grow up in?

Bail shuddered, shoulder against the wall. Never mind. Blasters were harmless now. Gaze turned on Yoda. “You failed.”

Yoda tipped his head, large eyes narrowing. Blotting vision and shifting colours hid the rest of the room from him. Silent presences one collapsed don’t forget yourself between his furnace and whatever emptiness Yoda had managed to gather into himself in a galaxy full of feeling. “Blame us you would, young Skywalker, hmm? Suggest that becoming Darth Vader is irrelevant, do you?”

Below the blankness… there is no emotion, there is peace but something echoed from Yoda’s deep glare. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. “A Sith Lord in the Senate and he had to tell a Jedi Knight about it himself to be discovered.” Hissing again, the sandstorm a childhood he thought he’d buried. Home is an anchor and it will drown you. Burning eyes ta vara på ditt vatten he brushed an ice-covered hand against the burn scars. Ignorance, yet knowledge. “But you couldn’t end the war. The clones, the Separatists, it was all Sidious’ work.”

“Hmm.” Yoda tapped his cane against the floor. Droids shuddered as the faint shivers chilled the room. “And you could?”

A fist clenched around the burning heat, condensing matter in his chest that would crush his ribs with its collapse. “Sidious is dead.”

“One death won’t pay for thousands.” Bail’s voice trembled, but with the serrated roughness of a rising storm.

Yoda nodded, face set as he took a shuffling step forward. “And followed him you did, hmm? Grant you greater power than we would, you thought he could?”

Knowledge, yet ignorance.

The air — the rippling warp and weft of the Force itself — cracked with the shockwaves coursing out of the explosion in his chest. The dragon lifted its head again never dead enough as burning eyes let their fire fall on this being he once called Master. A deep breath, another. Bail slumped against the wall, legs weakened. Somewhere to his side, a gasp, a faint cry. Yoda bowed further over his cane as the trapped storm began to whine, only his wide, whitened eyes to reveal the pressure at the edges as the sandstorm broke free, the dragon’s children slipping out between his ribs to hiss in the room as his fist closed, a cold hand around the heat of rage, ice to channel the fire of the furnace.

“You would have let everyone I ever cared for die!”

“And how many others have died to save those you cared about?”

Through whiteout vision he spun to face Obi-Wan. As the serpents split his ribs the man struggled upright, bracing against the corner of the room. His overflowing eyes burnt through the skull-splitting everything that ran through Anakin’s veins. “You know what you did, Anakin. What you brought on the Order. On the Republic.” Obi-Wan shook his head. “If it was so easy to kill Sidious, why wait until after thousands of us died to stop him?”

His mouth kept moving, but if he made a sound it was lost in the sudden roar of the sandstorm.

And the crying of the Force as every darkness that his kneeling to Sidious had brought on them unravelled to show its shape. No chains, no cages, and what price to pay for that ghost of freedom?

Visions ached like any war wound. Like every war wound.

The medbay blurred out behind the sandstorm, the star-fire heat of the dragon’s breath to show him every cruelty again. Watch your water, Ani as he’d gone through the Temple. Younglings, Padawans, Knights with a sick core of fear there is no emotion, there is peace, fear to anger to hate behind the bewilderment that had tainted every trembling hand reaching for a sabre hilt hate to suffering. “No…”

They’d shot Obi-Wan out of the air. Aayla had looked out among the trees for the threat her clones had to have seen. Yoda’s clones had been late to get the message — the Master of the Order had already felt that disturbance tearing the Force in two, had already been alerted to the crumbling pillars who was the Order afraid of? “Who were you afraid of, Yoda?”

A silent lake zephyr below the storm. So easily torn away into the maelstrom, the turmoil of the interstellar weave turned on itself.

Shards of faces filtered through the storm surrounding his static existence. So many identical what becomes of the clones now and so many foreign despite it. And so many faces that he should have known, should have stood side by side with as they fell but I didn’t because you were afraid of me and fear to anger, anger to hate, “…hate to suffering.”

Visions ached like every war wound, black holes in his flesh. Star-cold rage, the banked coals of pain to strike across the throat of the galaxy itself to drain the life out of us all an icy hand clenched and struck bone.

The sandstorm shattered into Obi-Wan’s ashen face, close enough that his gusting breaths like something struck him but I couldn’t have raised a hand heated the ice holding phantom flesh together. “I don’t know what you’ve become, Anakin.” He shook his head. Serpents twisted around his heart. “But justice is justice… and the Emperor’s life alone…” Slick palms slipped on the burning rime of Anakin’s Force-hot flesh.

His fingers unfolded from Obi-Wan’s wrist. Death, yet the Force. “The Force shall free me.” Silence seeped into him again as he turned away. Away from what had been, what had been torn apart just the two of us and the burning bridges by words spat on the hot rocks of Mustafar.

Shut-down droids lingered in the corners of the room, surrounded by shards of glass. Bail straightened from a braced crouch as Anakin turned, a darkness in the set of his jaw that made the dragon hiss as it curled back around his heart. One side of the Senator’s face was scratched by the glass you shattered. Only breathing and a startled child’s noises.

He turned his head. Padmé was bowed over the twins, but none of them bore a single bleeding mark.

“The Sith Code you recall, hmm?” Yoda’s usual grumble had become something flat, like a sea waiting to have its surface broken by a monster of the deep. “Consider you fallen we must, then.”

“Master Yoda…”

Padmé? She hadn’t moved, but her lifted chin carried all the confidence everything that made you call her an angel that the Queen and Senator had ever been able to summon. “We’re all distressed and in shock after the events of the last few days.” Not a quiver though her voice was weak with pain you inflicted. She shifted the weight of the twins in her lap. “Now is not the time to make rash decisions. We must return to Coruscant and attempt to salvage the political situation. If the Emperor is indeed dead, there will be chaos throughout the galaxy.”

Blue shock filtered through the Force, freezing the thoughts in his mind. Yoda sighed, ears drooping. “Defeated the Order is, Senator. Helpless we are. To restore order, those with power you need… not those scattered by betrayal.”

Too lacking in power to make a difference to this abandoned Empire. A clenched fist under the folds of his robe. Padmé sighed. “You’re the only ones with authority enough over the clones to rein them back in. We need you in the capital, Master Yoda. And you, Master Kenobi.” Her gaze only skimmed him in seeking out Obi-Wan, but something ran through the Force, a red warmth he didn’t know. “Anakin’s present situation is clearly far beyond either of you. Wait on making a judgement until that changes.”

Was that a defence? If anyone would…

Yoda gaze fell to the floor. “Much you ask of us.”

“These are desperate times, Master Yoda.”

Bail straightened his back and sighed, folding his hands over his blaster. “You’re suggesting that we leave the man who slaughtered a Temple full of youths alive and free?”

Burning ice in his veins again. The cracked edges of the window snapped with the chill.

“I don’t think we have much of a choice, Bail.” A Queen’s command in her darkening gaze.

He turned his head, glanced and Obi-Wan, Yoda, Bail. Padmé and her children. Their children.

Yoda heaved out a sigh that left him doubled over his cane. “Argue with you I cannot.”

“Then we’ll arrange for departure immediately.”

Bail started. “Padmé, you’re not well…”

“I can recover along the hyperspace rout as well as I can on a medbay bed.” She swung her legs down to let her feet hover above the floor. “Any time we lose now is time for disarray to establish itself throughout the Republic.”

Still the Republic, in her mind. His clenched fist relaxed. Democracy, a word he’d only ever had shouted at him. Obi-Wan’s allegiance, the reason he could never have been a slave because that didn’t happen in a democracy, this shining ideal of a galaxy he’d never lived in.

A galaxy sobbing a broken song of bloodshed and disaster in his head, chaos stretching out across it like shattered glass across the medbay floor.

He was reckless, impulsive, quick to act, not quick enough at thinking to make up for it. It nearly ended him once.

I nearly ended him once.

And I died for it. How many will follow my path? Fall victim to the cold blood of one born of the Force itself, a human dressing on a force so old, so inexorable, so passionate in its consuming of everything it loves that the vessel it shapes can hardly be compassionate?

I wonder still that he seemed so human when I first met him. The recklessness… it does not seem the act of something that knows it will live long. Perhaps the act of something that does not believe it can die.

Watching him now, I have to question it all. He is insecure, he trembles, he freezes when the Force begins to scream. How many others stand behind him as the glass explodes with his anger? I see shades in the mist, but I cannot speak to them. If they do not hear me, does he?

I might, perhaps, forgive him if he does not want to hear. His mother already screams at him enough, fills his head with… things that I don’t pretend to understand. It is for the best that I do not. Sidious’ teachings corrupted me enough — I feel it, now, I feel the way the aether I live in turns on me, tears at me.

He knelt for Sidious, but the Force does not consume its own tail in his chest now. That furnace no longer burns simple steel. There is kyber below the ice, and I can only fear what it means for the day he breaks.

I pray his mother will have mercy. He will not.
