I started watching TF: Headmasters, and I'm having fun with it, BUT episode 6 pissed me off so much that it's surreal.

The whole emotional conflict of this episode is that there's this meteor the Decepticons created that distorts and bends metal, and it's heading for the Autobot base. The plan is that they have to send a human ally to deactivate it, but Spike is hurt, and Daniel is scared to go (because he's just a kid). OK.

But like... Carly... The MIT graduate... Is right there the whole time, and they don't even acknowledge her!!!! I know this show is for boys, and I know the episode would be over in 10 minutes, but holy shit, at least don't put her NEXT TO THE OTHER CHARACTERS LIKE A PROP!!

I think people tend to assume that any criticism of worldbuilding is ultimately a demand for a story to grind itself to a halt and give the reader 20 paragraphs of exposition, and like. Most of the time good-faith criticism of this nature is coming from a core aspect of the story not being grounded in the setting in a way that outright detracts from the story's quality. You fix it not by Explaining but by Showing it passively in the makeup of the world.

Like the last instance I saw this critique in was like 'you can't expect an author to stop and exposit the nuances of gender roles/Queerness in a fictional society' and it's like yeah I don't, and in fact this is actually one of the easiest things to show in the text without exposition. If a society has gender norms to begin with you'll see aspects of these norms baked into EVERYTHING. You'll see it in its stories, its religion, its taboos, its etiquette, its clothing, its family structures, its language, its insults, its labor, its leadership, etc. It will have massive impacts on how characters interact with one another and how they perceive themselves. It will help Shape your characters.

If you do this legwork to begin with for the core facets of your story, you will find very natural places for these concepts to be demonstrated without derailing the plot and with little to no exposition. THAT sort of thing is what's being asked of you.

hello kingdom come deliverance fandom. I still have no idea how to make video game gifs so I bring you my speciality instead; gifs of The Actor in a slightly obscure role from their earlier career where we can all pretend its The Character in an au. Helped by the fact that this is a medieval setting and his character has a romantic connection he can't pursue because of an arranged political marriage so he diverts his devotion into looking after his love's child (who just so happens to be called Henry.)

I actually love how ugly Merlin's outfit is in Merlin. BEFORE YOU YELL AT ME - I love his outfit, I think it's fun, but when you look at every other character, even other peasants, he literally is wearing ill fitting rags. Everything is too big on him (despite being like six foot but whatever) and his silhouette reeks of boring character design.

But like!! Yeah!! He is just Some Guy. I love how they never give him som epic mage robes or a cool outfit for more than thirty seconds. He is unassuming. He's over here, commanding dragons and controlling the weather in the medieval equivalent of stained sweatpants and a night shirt. It's great.

Hey uh. Am I misinterpreting something or have you been implying that the entire changeling situation sucks for more reasons than “bad things happen if the changeling gets caught”. Like am I misinterpreting something or are you saying it’s directly terrible, at least the process, for the godkid???

Fifth Consequence of becoming a Fairy: Alterations of the Soul.

The child's body undergoes Physical Changes to become a fairy, but they also undergo a metaphysical change as well. The soul must be adjusted, shaped, broken and remade. These changes allows the child to accept magic into their body, and handle any disruptions in time or perception.

Their soul is transformed into their proper Fairy's Crown, and the child would have officially become a True Pixie! Yippiiiie!!

Thankfully, this part of the process is painless! Or, well, more like Timmy fell unconscious during it. Though Timmy says he sometimes feels strange moments of loss. Like an essential part of himself has been ripped away from where it should be.
