Ever wondered why the Elucien arguments pulling out Sarah’s 2016 interview and Facebook comment (yeah that one after ACOMAF came out) are SO annoying? 🙄

Ok so I ended up in a TikTok comment section today (yes I know that was my first mistake) and it occurred to me, we are once again not on the same page about some fundamental ideas on writing. The OP argued Sarah hasn’t changed her mind on the next books &elucien and that she said so in an interview after ACOSF.

Ok, but there’s a huge GLARING problem with that.

Basically, a writer makes promises in the text. I’m paraphrasing Sanderson here (I watch his lectures for fun, even tho I don’t write cuz I’m a dork) so he was talking about the first chapter and prologue of a book, or movie… but if you’re writing a multi-book epic, then you’re probably going to make promises about plots and characters of your future books, right?

So what are these promises? Basically what kind of book it is, plot&trope hints, the tone, goals, journeys and obstacles.

Ok back to SJM: why is the argument that “she said Elucien and hasn’t changed her mind infuriating? Because she made different promises in the books. And that is what Elriels mean when we say “set up”.

I mean just from the amount of interactions, Elriel have more than Elucien.. not to mention the warmth, positivity and thoughtfulness she put into their interactions over seriously 4 books. The promises are crystal clear: there is a romance that started as friendship==plot, but she has a bond w/someone else==obstacle, and Rhys forbade it in a moment resulting in her thinking he rejected her, but he didn’t == twist.

These promises need to be addressed, resolved, fulfilled. Is there something even CLOSE to this kind of story promise existing for Elucien?

I have seriously seen people claim that Elucien are both “friends to lovers” AND “enemies to lovers”…. These cannot both be true, like come on… you’re not even sure what kind of story they promise to be? You’re not sure what kinds of promises Sarah made about Elucien?

Why are you not sure? Because it’s not in the text. My personal view is that Elucien is neither… if they happen it’s kind of worse than either trope, they’re certainly not friends, they are at best indifferent to each other and at worst resentful. Mmmm … delicious “indifferent to lovers” 🫠

On a serious note, I don’t “hate” Elucien, but SJM hasn’t made a single promise in the text that I can quote in here that would make me excited about them. He gave her gifts that she didn’t throw away…. ?? Really?… she made a half step toward him… once… no, just no! And that’s how I feel, regardless if “Lulu deserves love”… sure he does, then write a love interest that brings out flirty firey fox boy from book1 and I’m on board 🫡 ….and don’t try to convince me after 4 books of a tepid nothing that all along it was Elain. Because. I. Don’t. Buy. It.

And my last point (I swear!) why did I get my panties all up in a twist… basically this: a writer makes promises IN THE TEXT, and if what you are saying in interviews directly CONTRADICTS your actual text, then you kinda have a problem. … at that point either you’re a bad writer, or you can’t blindly trust an interview from 7 years ago, it’s outdated!

The great GRRM himself said how often his “gardening style” of writing led to character arcs and romantic pairings changing… so why don’t we start treating Sarah as an adult author, and trust the text, and not an old interview?

It also comes down to trust. You don’t wanna be left feeling like “hmmm this doesn’t feel real, I don’t buy it” it takes you out of the text, and it happens when an author messes up promise-delivery . When an author foreshadows well, and sets up the story with their promises, still manages to surprise us while keeping the promises… well I trust THAT PERSON to tell me the most satisfying story.

Realm of the Quarantine Reread End-of-Book Questionnaire: Assassin’s Apprentice

Any differences between your first/previous reading experience and this one?

Uhhhhh yep!! I can’t even believe how different it was. Every scene has taken on an entirely different colour and flavour in my memory. I skimmed far too much the first time, yes, but also I just went into it with the wrong framework. I think I’ve mentioned this before but my mum recommended me these books on the basis of my love of A Song of Ice and Fire. She directly compared them and said how similar they were. Because of RotE’s length I had been putting it off for years, and only finally picked up Assassin’s Apprentice because I was itching to do an ASOIAF reread but was (and am) trying to wait until Winds of Winter to do it. 

So you can imagine the difficulty settling into a book like Assassin’s Apprentice when you’re expecting Game of Thrones. I remember my overall impression on my first read being that it was a pretty standard fantasy novel with the only really exceptional thing about it being the characters and their relationships. Characters are always my top priority so it was enough to keep me invested and progressing onto the next book and the rest of the series, but I did so not having absorbed nearly as much as I should have from the first book in the series.

Now, just from revisiting that first book, my understanding of Fitz and the world he operates in has exponentially increased and I know that will transform my experience of every book going forward. I really made sure to make myself slow down and read every word; absorb descriptions and just be in each moment without racing to the next one. Overall this book (and all the Fitz books) are much more concerned with the human condition and the effects of abuse and trauma and deep loneliness than being an epic fantasy. In fact it barely reads like fantasy at all; it’s incredibly grounded and focused. Of course the elements are there, but while Assassin’s Apprentice may not be as subversive as the rest of the series, it is certainly not generic fantasy. This book just feels alive to me now in a way it didn’t before against the rest of the series. I can regard it as a beautiful piece of the puzzle in its own right instead of just the setup. I wanna reiterate I always really liked Assassin’s Apprentice but it just paled in comparison to my unholy obsession with the rest of it. Idk this reread just really shifted a lot of things into perspective for me and I’m excited!!

Favourite character introduction moments/scenes

It’s gotta be a tie between the Fool, Kettricken and Patience (realising there is a common theme here of Fitz making an idiot of himself). I genuinely was laughing so hard when Fitz is like, actively making himself smaller and so pleased with himself trying to help the Fool, and of course the Fool’s iconic “listen you idiot” ugh it’s just chef’s kiss baby, that’s what we in the biz call a meet-cute! (I know they have seen each other before, but this is the first time the Fool talks to Fitz). Then of course we have Kettricken who poisons Fitz at their first meeting, and Patience who Fitz continuously embarrasses himself in front of before even realising who she is. The fact that all three of these people end up being some of Fitz’s only genuinely loving relationships makes it even better.

Favourite character arcs

I think I’ve gotta go with Verity and Burrich. Verity goes from kind of a bloke’s bloke (he was so different in the beginning than I remembered!) to being a proper King-in-Waiting. He is self-sacrificial but not for pride; he genuinely cares deeply for his people, as a whole and as individuals, and will do anything it takes to protect them. He is far from perfect, and he could have done a lot more for Fitz when he was younger, but once Fitz is in his eyeline and he is confronted with the life the boy has led he seems suitably shamed and tries to do his best for him. He’s a good boy and I love him!

Burrich of course is just. unlucky. His health deteriorates due to injuries. He gets saddled with some kid and is burdened to bring him up to an impossible standard he has set himself (to not shame a man he has an impossibly high opinion of). He’s deprived of a job he loved and was good at, and most importantly he’s deprived of his boyfriend I mean lover I mean “master”.

His arc is not a happy one at all but it is compelling, and I can’t help but love him and feel for him despite also disagreeing with him on almost everything :)

Favourite quote/s

Unfortunately I don’t have any tabs atm so I couldn’t really keep track, but my heart exploded when Fitz said to the Fool after going into his room, “I wish I had a place that were as much me as that place is you.”

Favourite relationships

Fitz/Fool obviously. Even though they don’t have that many interactions in this book I loved every single one of them. The Fool volunteering to care for Smithy after Fitz has endured a long day of horrendous abuse is just!!!!! Kindness! What a concept! I could really see why they develop such a deep bond so quickly.

Fitz/Burrich is just so real and so compelling and it hurts me but I love it. Fitz/Chade breaks my heart bc Chade is manipulating his way into Fitz’s heart - I think without realising it a lot of the time bc he is lonely too, but the power imbalance is not okay when he is the centre of Fitz’s world for a long time and the closest thing he has to a friend. Knowing how Chade behaves not too much later just makes it even worse when he is so nice in this book because it just shows why Fitz has such a hard time being his own person and saying no to Chade ever.

Fitz/Verity for obvious reasons. Fitz/Hands!! They’re cute but it makes me sad that Hands betrays him in AQ. Weirdly I liked Fitz/Molly way more this time but more their friendship than anything. And next is Royal Assassin and their deeply toxic romance soooooo.

And Fitz and his puppies BUT WE DON’T TALK ABOUT THAT.

Favourite setting

Do yourself a favour and read the description of the Mountain Kingdom and specifically the palace. It is STUNNING and something I completely skimmed over the first time cos I’m a dumb idiot bitch I could have been picturing a city of huge colourful tulips all this time but fuck me I guess!!

Favourite chapter

As a rereader I think I’ve gotta say chapter one. There’s just so much to pick apart all crammed into one chapter. It still holds a lot of mystery even when you’ve read the entire series.

Most loved character

At this point I’ve gotta say Fitz. That’s who my heart is with during this book and he NEEDS IT

Most hated character

Okay I found Regal a much better villain on this read and hated him A LOT but whomst I despised even more w the very fibre of my being was Galen bitch disgusting!!!!!! Verity was so like, smug?? when he killed him and it was so satisfying. It’s what she deserves!!

Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimised by Robin Hobb (most heartbreaking and/or visceral moments)

Literally this whole book was so harsh and I was perpetually emo throughout but off the top of my head, Fitz’s depressive episode after Shrewd and Chade test his loyalty fricking broke me, as did the entirety of Galen’s abuse/training; since I was paying so much more attention this time it hit a lot harder that he is an absolute textbook abuser and the psychological torment he inflicts on Fitz is just. deeply upsetting to say the least. It really got under my skin.

Details, observations, spoilery notes made with the benefit of the full picture

Okay this is where I just dump all the notes I took while reading that don’t fit anywhere else. It’ll be long lol so strap in.

- It’s never not funny to me that Narrator Fitz comes across as like a hundred years old when in actuality he is like twenty. Also that he looks back on himself with such a sense of wisdom and superiority, yet we know there is dumbarsery aplenty to come. Amazing.

- I’ve never really registered that for the first six years of his life Fitz had a mother who loved him and I don’t know how to feel about that

- REVELATION THAT SEEMS REALLY OBVIOUS IN HINDSIGHT: Fitz most likely only spoke Chyurdan when he was abandoned, which would have played a huge role in why he was not only quiet but unresponsive to what was happening around him. He probably didn’t even understand that he wasn’t going to see his mother again until much later, and he didn’t know how to ask questions. When he goes to the Mountain Kingdom and Kettricken comments that he speaks Chyurdan like someone remembering the language he doesn’t comment on it, so it’s likely that future Fitz doesn’t register that he didn’t always speak Six Duchies(?). He mentions in the narration that the memory of being abandoned is incredibly stark but not necessarily reliable, and possibly shaped by the Skill, which to me opens up the possibility that his memory is essentially auto-translating for him things he didn’t understand at the time. We also know that at the time of writing this he’s given up his memories of his mother etc. up to the stone dragon, so obviously his recollections of these traumatic events are going to be warped by that. Anyway thanks to my sister for pointing this out and being much smarter than me.

- According to Fitz’s grandfather, Chivalry always knew about Fitz. Don’t know how trustworthy a man desperate to yeet his grandson out of his care is but there ya go.

- Weird and hilarious that Shrewd tries to see Fitz on the day he arrives but then just like. What? Forgets about him? For years? lol

- Chade literally tells Fitz that he is a king’s man now and that’s the most important thing about him YIKES

- Chade becomes the closest thing Fitz has to a friend for quite a long time and that is fucking depressing

- It’s interesting that Chade had to be convinced to teach Fitz. It’s hinted at that there was an ~incident~ the last time they tried to train someone, followed by a long period of Chade being left to rot in the walls.

- Not to be out here diagnosing fictional characters but like.Fitz. Literally has depression.

- Fitz having to turn down Fedwren’s offer of apprenticing for him is so sad. It’s the life Fitz should have had.

- The Fool’s non-binary gender is mentioned as early as Chapter Nine! (Published in 1995! We have no choice but to stan!)

- “So quickly we were all made accomplices in our own degradation.” OOF.

- I really realised this time that the reason Fitz seems so shit at things he trained his whole life for later is because all that training was interrupted by many months of isolation, deprivation and abuse. All at the age of like 13-14. He got out of the habit of subconsciously acting in a way that Burrich or Chade would approve of. For a long time the only person he needed approval from was Galen, and he became completely single-minded about it because that was his means of survival. And you don’t just recover from that - especially since neither Chade or Burrich would give him the time of day for an extended period *after* his training was done. When Chade did finally talk to him again it wasn’t to recommence training really; he just gave him a bunch of tasks to do. By the time Fitz got to the Mountain Kingdom he was completely out of practice, and still managed pretty bloody well in spite of it.

- Kind of related to the last point: I love that while Fitz isn’t a savant at anything he’s a pretty realistic jack of all trades. He not only has an aptitude for learning almost any skill or subject but a genuine broad curiosity too. It’s one of the few things that is just him, ya know? It’s just his personality and something he can find joy in, even if it does also factor into his being used by others.

- Imagine being Burrich and finding out that your son thought you were a dog murderer for like ten years lol ouch

- Fitz thinks about the Fool soooo often in the Mountain Kingdom, pointing out things that remind him of him, or things he would like. It’s v soft tbh I love them so much!!

- Another dumb thing I forgot is that Regal is convinced that Shrewd had Fitz poison his mother to death, which adds a rather important layer onto his motivations lol

"So, what's with all the romance books?" Beau had asked when the incredibly chatty small talk about names and hometowns (which, Beau has only vaguely told the truth about) had come to a lull.

"Oh! They're my stories! I'm a fairy tale reader and analyzer and draw-er!" Her new roommate replied, while bouncing up and down on Beau's mattress waiting for her to hand her a blanket to put on it.

Beau glanced in her direction, blanket in hand. "A... a what? So, like, you're going to school for that?"

"Yeah! Isn't it super cool that they offer that here?"

"That is actually pretty cool. Why do you love it so much? What do you want to do with it?"

"I want to draw and write epic adventures, of love and loss and steamy romance! Like, the real good stuff. Just like the ones while I was growing up!"

Jester's childhood was apparently pretty lonely, and the books to her were a way to escape into another world- one with happy endings and companionship and colors unlike ones she knew to be true. It made Beau's heart ache a bit to hear. Knowing that someone so excited and starry eyed could be so lonely. She almost felt empathy for her, coming from a place of isolation herself, but once again she shook the thoughts aside.

Unlike Beau, Jester had a lovely mother. An entertainer, performer, and Courtesan, Jester's mother was apparently the famed Ruby of the Sea ("She's the best lay ever!" as Jester had said without an ounce of weirdness in her tone.)- someone Beau had heard rumors of, but didn't know much about past the name. Jester was proud to share it, telling her all about the men she'd tricked and pranked as they came and went from her mothers chambers. That led to another fact about Jester, she loved pranks and shenanigans- which explained the dick on her door. Pranks, along with fairy tales, were her way of passing the time she spent kept in secret in her home. The aching returned to Beau's heart once again as she heard that, and once again she shoved it down. Still, she couldn't find it in herself to dislike Jester. She was funny, genuine, and endearing. The type of person that Beau should hate, but couldn't bring herself to. A few times she even caught herself starting to smile, a foreign feeling for Beau when people talked to her.

Every now and again, she even found herself answering a question... well, answering a question HONESTLY- which she would immediately internally scold herself for, Dairon's words still echoing about her headspace. "Know them. Don't let them know you." Jester was her roommate, which was already a position in which she had too much access to her. She couldn't let herself fall into the trap of genuine friendship and connection. Beau couldn't afford to do that. Yet, here she was, setting up her minimal decorations and chatting on and on with this new- yet somehow strangely familiar- tiefling. It was strange, really. The more they talked, the more Beau felt as if Jester was a person she was supposed to be talking to. She was never one for fate, or any of that bullshit, but sometimes life sure felt an awful lot like it.

The more they talked, the more THEY talked, instead of it being a one sided conversation where a head-in-the-cloud girl spoke to a virtual wall. Beau wanted to talk to Jester more. She liked hearing her voice, she wanted to hear what she had to say. It was all very bizarre.

The more they talked, the more Beau also started to feel a warmth inside of her, one that she absolutely wouldn't start to think about quite yet.

SPOILER Review for ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

I repeat, THIS is a spoiler review of the movie. Do not read beyond the cut if you have not seen the movie and don’t want to be spoiled!

I have started and re-started this review so many times now and each times it becomes so damn long. I am trying hard to make it shorter here. Edit: I failed big time. Whatever, here we go lmao

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!

- The cast is lovely. Initially not that fond of Depp being cast as Grindelwald (though not for the controversial reasons people wont stop bitching about) he has absolutely grown on me over the two years and it was worth it. He is sinister. He is calm and collected. Not over the top. He and his followers murder a couple in Paris to take over their home. Then they find they have a baby boy and... they murder him off screen too. Very chilling. 

- Queenie Goldstein. Not a character I connect with, but I don’t hate her at all. I just don’t know what to think. But Alison is wonderful and I personally love the dark twist her story takes. And she goes willingly with Grindelwald was a surprise to me. It broke my heart on Jacob’s behalf wow. That was rough.

- Newt Scamander. Despite obviously being my favorite and I completely adore him - I was still absolutely surprised how wonderful he is in this movie. He is just such a delight and Eddie is just gorgeous. Inside out. Can’t take my eyes off him. He’s funny, but not in a cracking jokes all the time way, but neither in a making a fool out of him for his awkwardness either? It was just such a spot on portrayal even superior to the first movie and he absolutely got the most laugh and love from the audience along with Jacob. This was absolutely what I needed the very most from a character I relate so much with.

- Jacob Kowalski. Again, there’s a reason why Dan Fogler points out his bromance with Newt in this movie. It’s the heart of it all. It’s funny, it’s warm and it entirely endearing. Jacob spends the movie almost like a guide for Newt on how to approach Tina and talk to her because Newt is just terrible at this. And it leads to just amazing scenes both between the boys, but also Newt and Tina. 

- Tina Goldstein. Oh she’s not going easy on Newt at first, but you understand pretty quickly that it’s her way to put up a shield to protect herself. She is very much her own character though don’t worry about that! Both Newt and Tina are given a chance to evolve a bit but also be themselves before a relationship which is a good thing. The Archive scenes in the French Ministry (fondly named Salamander Eyes by fans because of the song playing) is amazing for Newtina fans. No there’s no kiss. No touches, but it doesn’t need that because it is downright amazing and unexpectedly funny. Jacob has already told Newt not to talk about her eyes reminding him of salamanders, but of course he starts talking about it before going “I’m not supposed to tell you” and the whole scene is just delightful. It really ends with Tina herself totally getting it and finishes to compliment for him. After that there’s not much time for romance, but she warms up to him and work together and is therefore the ONLY canon ship in this movie not at a terrible place at the end!

- Credence and Nagini. I’m going to say it as it is. I am not invested in Credence. I don’t particularly like him. Though it’s better off in this movie than the first. But while the moment when he met his old nanny or whatever was lovely, it dragged on. I just didn’t care enough and wanted to get back to literally anyone else. Claudia Kim as Nagini though is captivating. She’s absolutely stunning and like with Eddie it’s not just because she’s beautiful to look at. Just, captivating.

- Albus Dumbledore! His introduction scene is fantastic and the lovely little music playing. Wonderful. He talks about the view and conjures the fog and we know the following scenes with him trying to convince Newt to go to Paris. Eddie and Jude has wonderful chemistry and plays off each other absolutely great! Jude makes a far more likeable Dumbledore. Not to say the old actors were bad, but I’m not really a Potterhead either so I don’t particularly care. 

- Theseus Scamander and Leta Lestrange. Not in it as much as I thought, but I am certain their screentime is less than what it felt like. I adored Theseus. I did expect to like him, but that he’d be so lovely? Wow. I’ll talk about him and Newt further down. Leta was also wonderful. I am not a huge fan of Zoe Kravitz, but girl can act and she gives Leta a whole lot of heart and... she does meet her end in this movie as I expected. I did get the feeling that she would be a one movie character.

- The soundtrack. Wow. Of course I listened to it once it was released. I am very fond of listening to movie soundtracks and while the first one was good, this one is more complete. It’s full songs from full scenes, not cut to pieces from all around the movie. It’s epic, it’s cute, it’s sad, it’s... it has everything. I got to say the Salamander Eyes helped make it’s scene so magical. ‘Wands to the Earth’ and ‘Spread the World’ are the epic ones. Like massively so. Chills down my arms and legs. And big shit going down on screen.

- Creatures. Can’t have a review of a Fantastic Beasts movie without mentioning the beasts eh? I did miss Dougal and the Occamys, but there were new wonderful creatures here. Favorites being baby nifflers of course. Wildely adorable! The Kelpie scene is wonderful and Newt with wet shirt and Bunty suggesting him to take his shirt off was hilarious btw. But the very favorite was the ZouWu. I was enchanted by that creature from the moment we first saw it in the Comic Con trailer. Wonderful creature. Wonderful interactions with Newt. And the Niffler from the first movie. Adorable as ever and even robs Grindelwald at the end. I did worry for it’s life there, but phew! Survial!

- Newt/Leta/Theseus. You’ll be glad to hear there really isn’t a love triangle going on here at all. In fact Newt don’t seem to have no issue with his brother and childhood friend being engaged at all. In fact he humorusly points out that he’s set to be the best man (HEARTBREAK). A curious moment though near the end. We get a close up of Newt, then cut to Leta saying “I love you” before camera cuts to Newt and Theseus. Both of them. Leaving it a bit “Was it meant for Newt or Theseus?”, but afterwards I think it was giving a double meaning. “I love you” to Newt for the years of friendship. “I love you” to Theseus for his romantic love. It was very touching as she then dies. But yes people will start bitching about woman dying for a man and “male tears” as well as people being racist for killing her. 

- Theseus and Newt. Now this one was the big delightful shock alongside Newt’s character. Based on trailers and promos we are led to believe the brothers’ relationship is very strained, but in fact it’s quite lovely. Theseus shows a lot of love for Newt from the get go. Yeah there’s the “Be less like you” moment, but they’re brothers. That’s hardly the worst thing one has said to a sibling trust me. Theseus also hugs Newt quite adorable in which Newt’s like O_O Eh? Without hugging back, but it allows Theseus to whisper that he’s being followed. Theseus isn’t the one chasing after Newt. He only does that once Newt polyjuices himself to look like Theseus in the French Ministry XD Of course the heartbreaker is at the end when everything is over and they get a moment where Theseus has in fact lost his fiance. Newt goes over and hugs him and tells him he’s on his side now. Just wonderful. I am every bit a lover of bromance and this movie gave me so much of it with Theseus and Newt and Newt and Jacob.

- I’m going to try to sum it up here. The minor cast is wonderful too. I quite liked Kama. The young Newt and Leta are great. McGonagall being alive and an adult is not explained at all unless I completely lost out on something. The editing is terrible in this movie and the pacing is a bit off. Some scenes are quite rushed, but at the same time the movie feels long. But not in a bad way. It’s just some editing are weird. Like one moment they are in the sewers, they hear the zou wu roar and suddenly they’re in the streets for a minute clip perhaps and it’s all done so quickly. Which is a pity because it’s a lovely scene. I also wish they had made more out of the fact that Newt’s book titled “FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM” weren’t made more fuss about. Like, it’s the title of the first movie man? 

So it has it’s flaws and I understand why people that are not into these movies wouldn’t really follow on here. I mean I’m not a Potterhead so I didn’t understand the last twist of the movie before someone told me. But in the end the good outweights the bad so far. It’s a very rewatchable movie because so much happens. Too much even, but still. I love a movie that gives and gives even after watching it many times. 

Go watch it yourself. Make up your own mind. I will be watching it again tonight already XD

Hey, what are your top 3 (or 5, if you’re up for it) plots/character dynamics that would’ve made OUAT more interesting but that the writers either didn’t do/tried to do but screwed up royally

Wow, Nonny, I think this might be the best ask I’ve ever gotten (or tied with the one about Regina sending all the random guests at the Captain Swine wedding home with their hearts in favor baggies) and I’ve had some great ones.

And I was going to mull it over as usual and give it the respect it deserves but if I do that it’s going in my drafts and won’t be answered for weeks if ever and will be six thousand words long. So I’m just gonna half-ass it. [Editorial note: it has now been more than a week since I wrote those words and I have been half-assing it in draft all that time. And it STILL got long as hell. This is why no one sends me asks. :-( Sorry, Anon.]

Top 5 characters/character dynamic missed opportunities:

-- First and foremost forever, everything having to do with Neal. Papafire, Fire Believer, Floof Family, Swanfire, Neal/Regina coparenting...every plot since would have been improved, more organic and more interesting by adding Neal. Neal and Emma going back in time and BOTH meeting their parents? Rumple’s Rampage with Neal around--and Neal being the one to banish him? The Dark Two costarring the Dark One’s son? Which wouldn’t have ended with Emma being upstaged in her own story by her Stu boyfriend, but given her the sacrificial moment she deserved.

-- Regina’s love life: With all due respect to OQ, that should have ended the moment Marian was brought back, and Regina’s next and permanent love interest should have been a villain for her to bring back to the light. Hook, if he was kept around after Neverland (the both of them rebounding after Swanfire and Robin/Marian reunited, but growing into something more); Maleficent (written to be a little more bitter/less reformed); Jafar coming off OUATIW (bringing in Aladdin and Jasmine a few seasons earlier, perhaps in place of the Frozen nonsense); even Facilier with the same backstory (which seems to be a fling while she was the Evil Queen, with possibly much stronger feelings on his part that she didn’t return because revenge). 

...OR. If the decision was made to ditch the original story of Swanfire, the only organic alternative would have been to go forward with a full-on love story for Swan Queen. (Which to be honest is one of the few things that I think would have prevented the show’s ratings decline and failure.)

-- Ruby should have stayed a main character, and her romance should have been onscreen. I enjoyed the setup for Frankenwolf in S2, but Kitsowitz have been promising a LGBT couple since S3, when all we got was sad, lonely Mulan in love with her straight best friend. (Cutting-edge wlw content, circa 1925.) Ruby and Mulan coulda/shoulda had a long-term, medium-burn romance like Alice and Robin are getting now. Ruby’s friendships with Snow and Belle could also have been respected (and poor Belle wouldn’t have been used to prop her and her family’s abusers). Even after the show had gone down the Stu hole, there was a period when they could have gotten Meghan back (before she became the queen of the Hallmark Channel) and could have gone on from there.

-- The Sheep Boys BroTP should never have been abandoned--especially so that Charming could play sidekick and patsy to a toxic misogynist pirate who never learned from him. Charming and Hook together were basically two frat boys glorifying traditional masculinity (with Hook being the darker, toxic side and again, never changing through learning anything from David). Rumple and Charming were incredibly different, but they had the commonality of putting their wives and families above everything else in the world. Exploring the different worldviews they came even with that common goal could have been fascinating, and expanded both characters.

-- And, of course, probably most of all: Rumbelle, and Belle’s other relationships. Like, I can’t even begin...there are SO many missed opportunities and lost chances with them--beginning even back in S2. What if they’d kept Lacey for more than two episodes and let her play a part in the main story? (I’ll never get over the hilarious visual of Lacey in Neverland.) But overall...just...not piling on stupid, needless, often OOC conflict without any payoff for three or four seasons. Not to say have them always be in perfect accord like Snowing, or a codependent mess like CY, in which Belle kept brushing off any of Rumple’s wrongdoings. But let them work out issues onscreen, let them fight together against outside threats like Hades, let them address their conflicts in ways that made sense in character rather than being excuses to prop a Stu or Sue. (Let’s not even discuss the constant teasing of the BatB TLK and the  ultimate utter pathetic anticlimax when it didn’t happen.) While I do think that canon Swan Queen is the only thing that could have definitely saved the ratings in later seasons, IMO a strong Rumbelle story that respected their characters and their story as Beauty and the Beast had a good chance of doing it as well. (Especially if Kitsowitz had had the brains to cash on on the live-action BatB hullablaoo.) But Kitsowitz were too small-minded and spiteful (and ABC too prejudiced and cowardly, I guess) to focus on their best romance.

(Honorary mentions to the Rumple/Regina frenemyship, which I cover below, and to poor Will Scarlet, who should have never been on the show if he wasn’t going to be more than a “soul-destroying” unneeded glitch in Rumbelle.)

-- The Anti-Magic Organization that Greg/Tamara supposedly worked for would have made a brilliant arc. Kitsowitz should have played that out before heading off to Neverland (it was obviously the plan because they didn’t expect the NL/PP perms situation to resolve so quickly).

-- My best crack theory: Hook found the author in Season 3B and had been using him to manipulate everyone ever since. Explaining Once Upon a Stu--and more important, getting out of it at the end of S4. https://violetfaust.tumblr.com/post/114245381966/what-if-someone-already-got-to-the-author

-- A S5b based on my second-best crack theory: https://violetfaust.tumblr.com/post/143427662086/things-that-absolutely-wont-happen-but-should Rumple and Belle try to get out of Hades’s clutches by working with Regina--who claims to be Rumple’s second-born child via Cora. We could have had so much juicy stuff exploring their past, what Rumple did to Regina, Rumple and Cora (it’s a travesty that they didn’t even have a passing encounter in the UW). It could have led into Emilie’s maternity leave when Hades discovered the truth and kidnapped Belle--which would have led to a 6A in which Rumple rescued Belle from some other dimension but found their child gone. And one of the plot points of 6A would have been Rumple working with the EQ not in some idiotic parody of a romance, but because she called in a favor.

-- BIG BAD FUCKING BLUE FAIRY. Enough said.

-- And then there’s the most destructive missed plot opportunity in the history of the show: Giving Rumple’s and Belle’s POVs in seasons 4 through 6. Given the reveals about the Dark Squad in S5, the most dramatic story this show ever had was Rumple’s battle against the Dark One (and his near-loss) in S4. A S4 that showed his POV of what was happening would have been epic--especially if it did not sideline Belle but allowed her to play a part in trying to save him at the end, culminating in their TLK that freed Rumple but unfortunately also let loose the Dark One, leading to it taking over Emma. Then S5 would have played out as it was advertised: the current Dark One vs. the only surviving former Dark One. Similarly, Belle’s actions in 6A caused nearly all the drama of 6B--and she wasn’t allowed to participate in it at all. 

Honorable mention to not including Belle in the Mulan/Ruby/Merida adventure in S5--a one-off that included three of her friends versus her enemy and could have really benefited from having, you know, a MEMBER OF THE MAIN CAST involved in the episode.

Holy shit, this was phenomenal!

It was exactly what I wanted. Starting from the breathtaking cover (seriously look at that fucking cover! Hands down one of the best of 2020!), feminist YA fantasy storyline, LGBTQIA representation, badass pirates, adventure with a touch of action in the high seas and let's not forget the well-considered controlled pacing romance between West and Fable that wasn't rushed nor forced—It was damn near unputdownable!

Besides the epic adventure the author takes readers on, what I enjoyed the most was the authors writing. The author's writing has improved drastically since 'The Girl the Sea Gave Back' and dare I say, the ‘Fable’ series is her best work yet. She was able to captivate me far more with the main characters than imaginable and what led the Marigold crew to cross paths, well paced plot, remarkable supporting characters whose backstories I hope is further explored in the 'Namesake' including Fable’s parents Saint and Isolde, the strong friendships and broken families ties. And that cliffhanger though! Take notes authors because that’s how you get readers amped for the sequel.

I seriously can't remember the last time I raved so wholeheartedly for a young adult fantasy novel. I thought for a second I was in a rut but hell to the naw! ‘Fable’ resurrected me from the slump grave and I’m sitting on the edge of my seat eager to get my hands on the next installment, ‘Namesake’ because it’s going to blow everything else out the water.

ooooOOOOOOoooo boy, oh buddy oh pal, this is the best ask I’ve ever gotten. Little do any of you know, I am an extreme book geek, I haunt all the book festivals, I regularly maintain my relationships with the publishing houses, and I frequent author’s conferences and writer’s workshops. Partly because I’m prepping my own manuscript and partly because I love books so much.

I real a lot, like 200 books a year on a bad year, so if you’re looking for something more specific, you just have to say so!

Here are some top ones that I think are great reads that I recommend from a variety of genres in no particular order.

Can you talk more about the reasons you ship Jamie and Brienne and not Jamie and Cersei?

Yes!!! I love this ask!!!

So first of all you have to understand what’s shipping for me. Shipping for me is either wanting two characters to get together or, if they are already together, wanting to watch them grow, challenge each other, solving their problems with empathy and communication. I don’t like unhealthy ships or ships that don’t even have the potential to be healthy because i feel this is wasting my time, i love love (and i have very strong opinions about what love is and what love isn’t), I don’t love  seeing characters i like being into relationships that stunt them emotionally or mentally.

Under a read more because I have a lot of feelings and I might not be very coherent:

With that being said, ever since ASOS I’ve read Jaime and Cersei as the dissolving of a relationship, not as some epic romance that’s gonna end triumphally in murder-suicide. Why? because the books do a poor job of portraying them as an epic romance and the quotes that jxc fans keep using in order to prove that are the same 3 quotes about mirrors and how they’re each other’s halves and they’re usually quotes directly from Cersei.  Who, i don’t know if anyone’s noticed, is paranoid, delusional and a very unreliable narrator.  She believes she loves Jaime but I seriously doubt it as in my opinion she only thinks of him as an extension of herself and her will. The only times they are portrayed having sex are firstly when Jaime throws Bran out the window and secondly, in front of their dead’s son corpse. Speaking of that…both times initiated by Jaime and both times with some arguing on Cersei’s part. (the second time being actually disturbing because she kept repeating no and she also tried to physically fought him before just giving in…creepy but this what you get when a white male’s writing a ‘consensual’ sex scene) When Cersei is saying that the only time she’s enjoyed sex was with Jaime I truly believe Cersei is saying she’s not enjoying sex at all but because Jaime’s the closest person to her she makes herself believe that because it’s in line with the narrative that Cersei’s building about herself and her family. Which, is another interesting fact, comes a lot more in Cersei’s chapters, internal monologues and dialogue, the fact that they’re twins. I feel like Cersei herself is fetishizing the incest because of the time spent in King’s Landing as a young teenager where she learned about the Targaryens and that, in connection to her desire of having power and being queen and combined with the fact that she was away from her twin , probably led her to romanticizing sleeping with her brother. But there’s no evidence in canon that she slept with Jaime before they were both 15 and she came to him at an inn, dressed as a peasant woman and she did that with a goal in mind …to persuade Jaime into joining the Kingsguard, no ‘omg this is totally the greatest story ever and they’re destined to be together’ but more like ‘this is a codependent toxic relationship that’s turning sexual as a manipulation’. I mean there’s an instance in Jaime’s pov when he mentions they were very close as kids and they used to sleep together and that their mother caught them doing something weird but i doubt they were doing salacious things on purpose. Kids do experiment at young ages but they don’t give sexual meanings necessarily to their games. So anyway, my point is that we’re never given any true intimacy between Jaime and Cersei in the books. We’re given some insight into how their sexual affair began and the other two times they have sex…is awkward at the very least. If not downright creepy and disturbing.  Jaime thinks the most tenderly of his sister when he’s away from her because he was taken prisoner and when they’re brought back together they mostly fight and Cersei tries to use sex to make Jaime kill Tyrion?! I’m sorry but i just don’t see the chemistry or the love there. Like i truly believe (and canon will probably show if the gods are just) that by having this affair that literally set the whole realm on fire they also kinda set their actual twin bond on fire as well. And like I said. I’m not the type of person who ships destructive couples.

Why do I ship jaime and brienne?

Because I truly believe GRRM put them in the book especially for me to ship them. Jaime’s povs are funny and sarcastic and also laced with denial if you pay close attention and his descriptions of Brienne are that of a man who’s never spent too much time in the company of women (other than his sister) and who doesn’t really know what to make of his new… companion. Anyway, his jabs at her stature, body type, humour, honour are those of a highschool boy who’s never had a crush before. Never in the history of platonic friendships has a friend looked at another friend’s eyes to say ‘yeah they do have astonishing eyes’. Like this just doesn’t happen, whether it’s reality or fiction. I mean, even though I do tend to apply real life logic to relationships (because i just don’t have patience for destructive relationships especially when people wanna portray them as super romantic)  it would be good to remember that these books are written by a human being, these events don’t just happen organically. Jaime didn’t get a boner when in bath with Brienne just because BONERS HAPPEN because that boner could’ve happened before or after when he was alone. And for his confession Jaime didn’t need to be naked in a bath with Brienne, he could’ve confessed that to her any other time. Another thing that’s very important to remember is that Jaime, who some people claim that he’s attracted to Cersei only, has a dream in which both he and Brienne are naked and Cersei is fully clothed? I mean… I did mention that things don’t happen in books out of nowhere, GRRM is putting them there for a reason. That plus his admission of saying that Jaime and Brienne are a take on Beauty and the Beast (we all know what a platonic story that is) makes me think that he must really really want me to see something between these two. And I do, I’m sorry for the people who think Jaime isn’t on a path to redemption because GRRM himself said that with Jaime he wanted to tackle redemption and what it means and if it can be achieved because they like to call it an ‘identity crisis’. I mean call it a puff pastry cabbage quest for all i care, an identity crisis or trauma are just things that might lead some people to redemption and drive other people insane (see Cersei). Also people tend to forget that redemption isn’t being forgiven by everyone else but becoming better than you were yesterday. Why did I mention Jaime’s redemption? Because people think that saying the meeting with Brienne made him a better man is sexist. But the thing is Brienne isn’t putting in any effort to make Jaime a better man, Jaime meets her and he remembers all the ideals that he’s forgotten or chose to forget ever since Aerys. She basically reminds him of a younger, more innocent Jaime before he was exposed to all the horrors of the world. So just by being in her presence Jaime becomes a better man and I dare say, Brienne also becomes a tad less judgemental in viewing the world. So…they challenge each other. They make each other better. They shared one wonderful moment of intimacy that, for me, was one of the best written scenes in the books. They constantly think about each other (and yes Jaime also thinks about Cersei…but in ADWD he doesn’t think ‘ohh i can’t wait to get to cersei, he’s more like ‘oh i have to go back to king’s landing and i’m gonna have to see cersei too, i guess. if she’s not dead’) and even though they’re still in denial (because how could they not be? Jaime doesn’t know how it feels to fall in love, he’s never fallen in love before, Cersei was always there and he always lived with the delusion that he KNOWS her. Brienne is a young girl who’s been mocked all her life for her looks, falling in love with one of the most handsome men in Westeros is just not smth she would have an easy time admitting to herself) their feelings for each other are right there, it’s not even subtle because GRRM doesn’t do subtle.

So yeah, Jaime and Brienne check all my boxes for couple that has the potential to be healthy and happy. I mean yeah, I know this story doesn’t have happy endings and they’re probably gonna die but that doesn’t mean i can’t enjoy the story of two very different people who inspire, respect and support each other and yes, FALL IN LOVE with each other despite previous arrangements and prophecies and despite the fact that Brienne is ugly and doesn’t suffer a complete and utter transformation a la highschool fantasy when she removes her glasses and releases her ponytail.

PS: I do believe Jaime cares about Cersei in a deeper way than she cares about him but it’s still very unhealthy and obsessive and not the way I personally define love. i don’t deny his connection to cersei in any way because that’s a huge part of what makes him jaime and i love jaime good and bad but i laugh in the face of people who say that ‘jaime can only love cersei’ because the level of delusion is just….wow

IN DEPTH FANDOM QUESTIONS: Final Fantasy VII

Top 5 favourite characters: Cloud’s story is very impressive for a 90s JRPG protagonist, and the glimpses of personality you get over the course of the game and towards the end especially are divine;I gave my heart to AVALANCHE early on, a moment of silence for all those who died so young;the image I have of Elmyra is a lot groovier than what there actually is in the game, but I’m hanging on to it;Tifa won me over just by her battle animations, and from these modest origins it grew and grew;

Nanaki is so serious, and also a baby.

Other characters you like: The bravest pilot-in-training who could. I believe in you, little guy.

Least favourite characters: “The hidden optional characters”, is what I was going to say, but I like Yuffie much better than Vincent. I actively dislike her character design (what is even going on there), but she’s vengeful and proud. All the characters in this game are more enjoyable if you highlight their unsavory qualities.

Vincent, though, is a miss. An unfortunate combination of things that I don’t care about. His main contribution to the story is giving more insight on Hojo and Sephiroth (and the Turks, I guess), but what I’d like to know more about are things to do with Gast, the Ancients, and Aerith’s involvement, and he has nothing to do with that. Also, Shinra by itself just isn’t interesting to me, it’s their involvement with the main characters (especially in the first areas of the game) that is fun, and again Vincent misses out.

There’s also the fact that- if there’s one mythological being that I couldn’t care less about, it’s vampires, and he shares a lot of the aesthetics, and- I don’t like using him in battle. The only time I used him during my first playthrough was when the party first crosses the mountains past Nibelheim, and taking him to the boss battle at end of the dungeon was a bad idea. It liked fire, and Vincent’s monster form whatever-beast liked producing said fire, and one thing led to another.

I love his theme, I guess, but I don’t even think of it as his theme. It’s the theme of the basement of the Shinra mansion and its fantastic, creepymonsters.

Also, Aerith, but more on that later.

Otps: I’m into Cloud/Tifa, but less for the chemistry and more for narrative reasons. I just think it makes a good story? Watching them dance around their memories of their shared past is the true heart of the game, for me.

I like that it’s romantic on Tifa’s part, but when you go back to the beginning of the game, once you know what sorts of questions the characters have been holding back on… how much of it is romantic on Tifa’s part, again?

I like that it isn’t romantic on Cloud’s part… until you get to the Lifestream, and the cause of this mess and the most honest truth at the core of it all was just a little boy crushing on the popular girl next door.

I like the idea of them deciding to stick together, the two survivors, now that they can admit out loud that they never really even knew each other.

I like how, with all of his regrets and failures, Cloud never did fail her.

(And I kind of like that the underdog in the triangle got the guy, in the end.)

I used to be passionately into Aerith/Tifa, early on – her interactions with Tifa are the best I liked Aerith – but I’ve let go of it, since. It’s okay to enjoy relationships without making them romantic, past me.

Not sure whether this is is an “otp “or a “notp” thing, or something else entirely, but I‘ve become very attached to the idea of Cid/no one as of late. Maybe the plot circumstances forcing him and Shera to stay separated helps them realize that it’s healthier this way. I want Cid to be grouchy and middle-aged and difficult to deal with on his airship, with his loyal crew and no romantic interest ever again.

And honestly, I’d be all for an AU where Cloud derails the plot by running off with some random AVALANCHE member in the early Midgar portion of the game. Jessie is the best candidate. Let Cloud and Jessie elope.

Notps: Cloud/Sephiroth. Aerith/Cloud as a reciprocal thing, because I enjoy their interactions better if Aerith isn’t serious about him (Cloud -> Aerith is fine, though).

Favourite friendships: Barret and Tifa. It was framed more as “Barret supports Tifa”, but I imagine that Tifa used to babysit Marlene quite a bit when AVALANCHE was smaller, so it evens out somewhat. They have a lot of shared history between just the two of them.

Aerith and Tifa. And listen, this isn’t pretty, but I want to think that they didn’t like each other that much, at first, even if it didn’t show – because why would they be rude towardseach other? Why wouldn’t they want to rescue innocent people? Maybe Aerith is a bit dismissive towards Tifa, unconsciously. Overrules her on things, without thought. I want Tifa putting up appearances that she enjoys Aerith’s company more than she really does, when really at times she makes her uneasy in ugly, jealous ways. All of that beingsomething they are already correcting themselves on come Kalm, quietly. On the way towards the chocobo farm you can see them walking together more often than not, and it continues that way until Aerith skedaddles.

Cloud and Yuffie. I just think that the detail of the shared motion sickness is nice and genuine. And in general, Cloud is yanked around by the story so much, it’s nice that he has someone he can be a mentor figure to. Good for the both of them.

Favourite family: Cloud’s, painfully unexplored as it was. It would benefit the game if there was just a touch more about Cloud’s mother. Just one more little scene, late in the game, to underline that she was loved, and that she’s gone, and that he doesn’t want to talk about it.

Favourite episodes: The entire Lifestream sequence where player-Tifa finally gets some answers to questions that have been left hanging since the first five minutes of the game.

Actually no, the entire game starting from where Cloud starts unraveling at the Noozupooru and the title of player character bounces back between a couple of party members as you’re putting the story together, culminating in the Lifestream sequence. But especially the Lifestream sequence.

Favourite season/book/movie: Original game? I think I liked the short animation thingy, Last Order, when I saw it ~ten years ago, but I can’t be assed to rewatch it now.

Favourite quotes: Any, as long as it comes with rustic typos in it. Absolutely beautiful.

Best musical moment: “Overworld“, as I had originally written down, like Tina’s theme, is a beautiful epic that encompasses all the highs and the lows of the narrative, but having listened to it for way too long while watching my friend play the game I’m in the “can’t stand” part of my cyclical relationship with the song. So let’s talk about Cid’s theme instead!

My first exposure to Cid’s theme was in the form of a background midi on a friend’s angelfire page, and I had no idea where the song was from. The file that I eventually managed to download on my computer was named something to the effect of ff7-cid, which told me nothing. No one in my family played video games.

As I said, I downloaded song. I used some .mid-to-sheet-music converter software on our computer to make it playable and printed it out. It wasn’t made for piano (and I definitely wasn’t good enough at notation to make an arrangement of my own), so I’d just follow along the notes as I put the midi on. I never did learn to play it. I never got a group together to try to play it – there’s nothing impressive about this story.

Fast forward several years, and I played the game. At that point it had been a long time since I had listened to the original midi, but I still remembered that I had built something way more epic around the song than what actually went down in the game. Not that Cid’s quest for the skies isn’t impressive, but it had sounded like something that would play during a last stand type of scene at the end of a story. My bad.

It’s still an impressive piece.

Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: You lose control of the main character! That’s pretty metal?

When it really disappointed you: My introduction to the game was Advent Children, which I don’t think I had many strong feelings about? But I saw people online mourning the death of Aerith’s character (made even worse by Crisis Core) and how she was supposed to have been amazing in the game. So I played the game expecting something truly spectacular and… well, FF7 doesn’t have bad writing, I don’t think, but the characters definitely need you to meet them halfway before you can truly appreciate their potential. And Aerith mostly just hit on Cloud, so I was unwilling to even try. Disappointing, in the truest sense of the word.

I have a history of hating most Final Fantasy romance, and most of the characters doing most of the romance-inclined things. Edge hits on Rydia? Shit character. Locke hits on Celes? Shit character. Rinoa hits on Squall? Shit character (okay originally I liked her for that and only started hating her later in the game, adding her to the list here isn’t fair). Zidane hits on Garnet? Shit character. Yuna hitting on Tidus initially made me label her as a shit character as well, and I can actually pinpoint the very line of dialogue that made me stop thinking of her that way, but my main point is that in the beginning of FF10, I hated Yuna.

Anyway, I like to think that every time Aerith is hitting on Cloud, she’s joking! Because that’s what the root of my disinterest in engaging with her can be traced back to! Most of my headcanons are about Aerith, honestly. I make kind of half-hearted efforts to like her, occasionally, but I need to do it on my own terms – in order to enjoy her character, I need to be able to own her character. Otherwise I’m in a situation where I don’t care for the character much, and every time people point out some feature about them that makes them “perfect”, the bitterness increases. The “I was pretty neutral on this character, but everyone talking about how they’re the best thing ever made me loathe them” feeling. Yeah.

Saddest moment: I’m currentlythinking about the Nibelheim flashback where Cloud just plain refuses to talk about his mother and that’s a sad moment, isn’t it?

Most well done character death: Rufus went out gloriously. The whole scene with the multiple delayed laser beams whose projections you had to keep track of was magnificent, plus a corrupt corporation sacrificing everything for the greater good was pretty nice. Redemption in death.

Glad he wasn’t retconned into having survived or anything, that’d just ruin everything.

Favourite guest star: Cid had his moment in the spotlight, before slinking back into the shadows until XII?

Favourite cast member: Character, okay. Tifa, probably. A bunch of neutral to positive character traits, distinct nostalgia in the character theme, some half-assed writing, best animations in battle, a role that was fantastically spot-on in unravelling the main character’s labyrinthine headspace.

It’s less who Tifa is as a character, and more the good vibes surrounding her role in the story and some of the aesthetic decisions that went into creating the character. I mean, she’s a female monk. Just give her a version of the AC outfit that isn’t all black and stillhas the suspenders.

Character you wish was still alive: Nanaki’s mom.

One thing you hope really happens: Nanaki’s mom becomes an actual character in the remake. She completely drops out of everyone’s consciousness once it turns out that the Dad was the Important One. You have this rare heroic mother who is remembered for her feats in battle, only for her to disappear from the story completely. I’d like for Nanaki to remember them together. Wasn’t she supposed to have been something of a role model for him, before?

Most shocking twist: When the nameless Shinra grunt took off his helmet.

I keep thinking back to that gifset of that scene with the caption “that’s what Final Fantasy VII is all about, Charlie Brown“, and. Yeah.

When did you start watching/reading?: After Advent Children came out.

Best animal/creature: I have so many feelings about that one house in the Sector 7 slums. Primarily ”how“ and “why“. And “rocket launchers”.

Everything inside the sunken Gelnika is super cool, too. As is the Ruby Weapon, or however you capitalize that. Ruby WEAPON.

Favourite location: First visit to Nibelheim, if I’m being honest. Basement of Gold Saucer, if I’m not.

Trope you wish they would stop using: Will they?? Or… won’t they?? Let’s drag this love triangle shit on f o r e v e r.

Like please, FF10 was the best because they settled the will they won’t they thing pretty early on, just let this matter be resolved so we can have some development in some direction, please. Let him get on with his relationship with Tifa so we can have some real progress, let him break it off for real, just do something. As long as it isn’t ”he’s hung on Aerith forever“, because that goes directly against the development at the end of the game. Give him a new love interest, if you don’t want to piss anyone specific off, just stop beating this horse, it’s been dead for twenty years.

One thing this show/book/film does better than others: That’s what Final Fantasy VII is all about, Charlie Brown.

Funniest moments: When I was playing the game with a friend, and she triggered the bug where you don’t get portable save point in your inventory, and we only noticed halfway through the final dungeon. We still beat the game without any save slots. It’s not a very difficult game.

Couple you would like to see: please just fuckign Cloud/Jessie.

Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: Anyway, I’d like it if there were more female characters in the party, with more varied roles. Any of the main party members besides Barret, Reeve and Vincent could have been female, I think (I like Barret as a father, and Reeve is such a late reveal that it wouldn’t serve the intended purpose. And Vincent is optional). Cid, Nanaki, someone new? Cloud? Maybe Jessie could survive?

Actually, unpopular (?) opinion time, somewhat related, hang with me here, but I don’t think Tifa being ancillary to Cloud’s story is a bad thing at all. He’s the main character, his story is the most important story of the game, and her story supplements his story beautifully. The problem is that after the first disc, she’s the only active female character of any real importance. That’s where her propping up Cloud starts becoming a problem.

More female characters.

Favourite outfit: I love Aerith’s design, it’s spectacular. At first glance all you can see is pink, but it’s super practical, and plain, too. Some of it is probably because that’s how the game is designed in general, no one is very decorated, but still, Tifa wears earrings.

A simple dress, practical shoes. A plain bow, crude metal bracelets, and some random string around her neck. It’s like she just picked one up one day and went, why the hell not? That’s actually something I do when I’m cleaning and find pieces of string or broken rubber bands. Just tie them wherever, arm, neck, around my head.

It’s my headcanon that her dress was originally white, but it was washed with something red (that seems to be her color, no?) and was accidentally dyed in the process.

The short jacket is my favorite. I like the idea that she’d go for that big-shouldered look in other outfits, too. It looks so weird. I love it.

Favourite item: All materia. The ‘all’ materia.

Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: Nothing official aside from the game itself. A couple of art prints. There’s one with Nanaki with his cubs looking over the ruins of Midgar that I need to get framed at some point, if I have the money.

What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: AVALANCHE all the way. The concept of bitter eco-terrorists is something that resonates closely with so much of my youth.

Most boring plotline: A lot of Barret’s stuff could have had better focus, unfortunately. Tying things back to Marlene & Elmyra & the working class more would have been appreciated.

Most laughably bad moment: I can’t decide between the kidnapping of Elena and Yuffie in Wutai, and the cannon-top slapdown between a corporate executive and a lifetime martial artist. It’s a horrible tie.

Best flashback/flashfoward if any: So much is centered around the Nibelheim flashbacks, let’s pick something else.

Cid’s Rocket Town flashback is pretty good, it makes you feel the frustration, and it manages to humanize him at the same time. Also, it isn’t a montage info-dump flashback, which FF7 falls victim to, occasionally.

Most layered character: Much of the plot is about putting different aspects of Cloud back together, sometimes more than figuratively, so, Cloud.

Most one dimensional character: Palmer. You know, because he gets run over by a… truck…

Scariest moment: The Shinra tower, after you escape from the jail. There have been just enough uncomfortable elements shown to you beforehand. There was something unnatural in that tank earlier, but it’s gone now. The soundtrack turned Silent Hill all of a sudden. Maybe you could receive comfort from the masses, now that you are facing a shared enemy of a new, strange caliber. The tower was bustling with life just moments ago.

But where is everyone.

Grossest moment: Cid yelling at Shera. Shut up, shut up, shut up.

Best looking male: Once you get past all the associations you have with white/silver-haired men in Japanese media, and the fact that it’s Sephiroth, Sephiroth is quite pleasing to the eye. The boob window is nice. Looks strong without being overbearing.

But at the end of the day, it’s still…. Sephiroth.

Best looking female: Everyone is a pile of polygons, but in my mind’s eye I always imagine Ifalna as a breathtaking beauty.

Who you’re crushing on (if any): no.

Favourite cast moment: I don’t keep up with creator commentary. I like to live dangerously.

Favourite transportation: All chocobos are beautiful in their own way. Incidentally, nothing that came after the original game counts as canon to me, and Cloud became a chocobo rancher near Corel. He goes snowboarding with Yuffie, sometimes, when she’s visiting and he’s trying to catch rare breeds in the mountains.

Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): Midgar, as a whole. The dirty neon lights hiding eco-terrorists and secret flowerbeds. The ruins in the epilogue, when you end the game unsure whether most of the player characters even survived Holy. It just feels like a lot of love went into creating Midgar.

Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: I was discussing Cid’s small pre-final dungeon Loveless monologue with The Friend Who Played Through My Copy Of Final Fantasy VII, and we came to the conclusion that we couldn’t come to a conclusion. It’s just… vague. Is it talking about dying? Who/what is supposed to work as a parallel to this play?Is it just a bad translation?

While we’re at this sort of thing, let’s talk about sequel stuff! and how Zack is what finally ties all the loose ends back together. About Cloud. About Aerith. He’s an explanation and a motivator, and from a story perspective, unimportant as a character with motivations of his own. Ultimately it doesn’t matter why he did what he did, only that he did them. He should never have been in the spotlight. In Final Fantasy VII, Zack would never have been in the spotlight.

Moreover, he’s gone. Aerith, the one who’d most benefit from having some answers, is gone. And it was fine that way.

Best promo: Uh. The FF4 flash ads with ostriches in them.

At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: Nibelheim.

Merab is a talented dancer. His burgeoning romance with stage partner Mary is thrown into disarray by the arrival of the magnetic Irakli, leading to a forbidden sexual attraction that recalls those in Moonlight and God's Own Country. Georgia is a country that only celebrated its first LGBTQ+ pride event seven years ago and its society remains conservative. Because of this, And Then We Danced has stirred controversy and many involved remain anonymous out of fear. Amid the potential for socially explosive fireworks, Swedish director of Georgian heritage Levan Akin has captured something uniquely tender and personal.

BENJAMIN (UK, 2019) Director: Simon Amstell In English

In Simon Amstell's affecting, bittersweet comedy, a rising young filmmaker is thrown into emotional turmoil by a burgeoning romance and the upcoming premiere of his second feature. It's perhaps no surprise that the imminent release of Benjamin's sophomore feature plunges him into an existential crisis. In this heightened state of insecurity, even meeting his potential dream match, young French musician Noah, doesn't soothe Benjamin's fears and self-loathing. And that's before he has to screen his film to the merciless film festival audiences. Benjamin is a low-key, intimate film, exposing the contradictions of a creative culture while perfectly balancing drama and comedy.

DEFIANT SOULS (Cuba, Switzerland, 2018) Director: Fernando Pérez and Laura Cazador In Spanish, with English subtitles

Defiant Souls is based on the true story of a woman who, disguised as a man, became the first female surgeon in Latin America. In the early 19th century, Swiss doctor Enrique Faber (Sylvie Testud at her best) travels to Cuba to search for his son, who is said to have been killed in a slave uprising. The local population is jealous of Faber's success as a surgeon and his marriage to Juana, an attractive outsider. Before long, rumors spread regarding his high-pitched voice and his gentle features, and a drama of epic proportions unfolds around one of the most scandalous cases in Cuban colonial history.

EVERYBODY CHANGES (Panama, 2019) Director: Arturo Montenegro In Spanish, with English subtitles

The Ponce Family is the perfect family. They live in the quiet, close-knit mountain town of Bambito, where everyone knows everyone and, unfortunately, everyone knows everyone's business. Frederico is the successful father, Carol the loving mother, and they have three wonderful boys. Despite appearances, perfect might not be the best way to describe the family as Frederico and Carol share a secret: Lizzie, the woman that Frederico has always wanted - no, needed - to be.

FROM ZERO TO I LOVE YOU (U.S., 2019) Director: Doug Spearman In English

Pete Logsdon is just a guy in Philadelphia whose fear of intimacy creates his history of getting involved with married men. His father and his soon-to-be step-mother are on him to settle down and find someone who's actually available. Instead, he finds a man named Jack who is fifteen years into a perfect marriage, has two beautiful children and an enviable wife, and is firmly inside the closet. Could this be the one? Featuring strong chemistry between the leads, director Doug Spearman (Noah's Arc) creates authentic characters in this highly engaging, obstacle-filled romantic comedy.

HAM: A MUSICAL MEMOIR (U.S., 2019) Director: Andrew Putschoegl In English

SONG LANG (Vietnam, 2018) Director: Leon Le In Vietnamese, with English subtitles

An unlikely bond develops between hunky, brooding and tough debt collector Dung and Linh Phung, a charismatic young opera singer from a struggling Cai-luong troupe (traditional Vietnamese opera). The two meet when Dung comes to forcefully collect a debt from the opera troupe, but when their paths cross again, a friendship – and then more – develops, awakening surprising, tender feelings in both men. Their story, too, soon scales operatic heights. Director Leon Le has delivered a rich drama, a smoldering relationship between two apparent opposites set against the backdrop of a gorgeous, fading art form. Set in 1980s Saigon, Song Lang is a gritty underworld noir hiding a tender, romantic heart.

STRAIGHT UP (U.S., 2019) Director: James Sweeney In English

The path to relationship bliss is often filled with self-doubt, second guessing and other methods of self-sabotage, but Todd takes this to a whole new level. After all, he is questioning his sexuality… not a good start when forging a new relationship. Todd might be gay. Rory might not care. The result is a neat, romantic-comedy drama with a twist; this is a love story without the thrill of copulation. With wit, humor and poignant moments, coupled with some of the best rapid-fire one-liners in a movie, Straight Up is a feature film about intellectual soul mates.

THE PRINCE (Chile, Argentina, Belgium, 2019) Director: Sebastián Muñoz In Spanish, with English subtitles

Chile, 1970. During a night of heavy drinking, Jaime, a lonely 20-year-old young man, stabs his best friend in what seems a crime of passion. Sentenced to prison, he meets The Stallion, an older and respected man in whom he finds protection and from whom he learns about love and loyalty. Behind bars, Jaime becomes known as The Prince. But as their relationship grows stronger, The Stallion faces the violent power struggles within the prison. The Prince is brutal, raw and cold, yet also beautiful, sincere and honest.

THE SHINY SHRIMPS (France, 2019) Director: Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo In French, with English subtitles

Matthias, an Olympic swimming champion at the end of his career, makes a homophobic statement on TV. His punishment: coach the Shiny Shrimps, a very flamboyant, very bad and very LGBTQ water polo team. They have only one thing in mind: to qualify for the Gay Games in Croatia where the hottest international LGBTQ athletes will compete. It's the start of a bumpy and joyful ride. If the Bad News Bears were a water polo team, and LGBTQ, they would be The Shiny Shrimps. Faster, higher, stronger… and fabulous.

UNSETTLED: SEEKING REFUGE IN AMERICA (U.S., 2019) Director: Tom Shepard In English

A remarkable look at the untold stories of LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers who have fled intense persecution from their home countries and who are resettling in the U.S. The film follows four new arrivals, each of whom have escaped potential peril in their native countries for being different. They've landed in the purported "gay mecca" of San Francisco, yet even there, building a new life in an adopted nation is a precarious undertaking. As new leadership in America continues to restrict immigrants and drastically cuts the flow of refugees and asylum seekers, Unsettled: Seeking Refuge in America humanizes a group about which few people know.

WHERE WE GO FROM HERE (U.S., 2018) Director: Anthony Meindl In English, French, with English subtitles

In Binghamton, an ESL teacher dealing with domestic abuse finds even greater violence at her school. In Orlando, two lovers drifting apart may be separated by the hate of another. In Paris, friends on an introspective night out are caught up in a brutal madness. Three acts of terror disrupt the lives of ordinary people. Will love win out over violence? With gripping performances and storylines all too familiar and frightening, Where We Go From Here is not an easy film to digest nor is it a question easily answered, but both are ultimately worth the effort.
