September 2, 2024 - On the first day of fall classes the Alma Mater statue on the steps of the library at Columbia University was drenched in red paint, as protests continue against the school’s financial support for Israel and the repression of pro-Palestine voices while Israel's barbaric USA-supported genocide goes on unabated. there has been more moments than i can count in the past seven months where i felt destroyed by all the death and carnage i've seen due to the colonialism and imperialism of the world. but there was something in particular about hind's death that made me think the world would stop turning bc how could anything continue given how gruesome and inhumane her death was? and yet, the world did not stop. and i thought we were once again left to remember her story only in our minds as she became another number, as her murderers went on killing unpunished, and as her mother grieved with rage when all she wanted was to keep her daughter warm and as safe as she could manage in this man-made hell on earth.

however, hind, a girl who only got to experience her kindergarten graduation, is now being immortalized in universities across the nation. her story did resonate to the masses and we will not let her be forgotten nor forgive those complicit in her death. real justice would be having hind alive, but these students are showing that they will stop the world and burn the status quo it upholds to the ground if it means her people can truly be liberated.

My sort-of coworker feels strongly that the mater will like The Holdovers.

I have tried to explain that the mater has exceptionally picky taste in film and television after a couple decades of being a TV critic, so don't hold your breath on this prediction.

My sort-of coworker insists it's good enough to win over the mater for Thanksgiving viewing.

I am not convinced the mater will even have the remotest interest in this movie, having seen the trailer. It is, in fact, far more likely that she will want to watch the newest Spiderverse movie at Thanksgiving (she felt the first one was so excellent that she didn't understand why Marvel even bothered releasing the Far From Home Spider-Man movie later that year - seriously. this is a thing she said).

My sort-of coworker is still very sure. She cited Sideways as a comparable - a movie the mater rolled her eyes at when it came out.

My sort-of coworker does not understand that my mother's sympathy for stories about sad white dudes of relative privilege is at an all time low, which is saying something because she is also a Johnnie and so her default tolerance is rather high.

My sort-of coworker wants me to report back. My sort-of coworker is in for a long wait.

Meanwhile, I'm left wondering why my sort-of coworker is so invested in this to the point of not listening to what I'm saying to her.
