Broadway Divas Tournament: FINAL
So. It's all come down to this. Were any of us truly surprised? Are any of us really prepared?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald (1970) holds the record for most Tony acting awards a person has ever won. She is one of five actors to be nominated across all four respective acting categories and the only person to win every one (and the only actress out of the three who is still living...). Her stage work includes: Ragtime (1998), Porgy and Bess (2012), and Lady Day at Emmerson's Bar and Grill (2014). Internationally acclaimed concert tours, Tony host, crown jewel of the American Stage. Grammy winner, Tony winner, Emmy winner. Get this woman an Oscar, stat. This is a BROADWAY Diva tournament, and Audra Ann McDonald is BROADWAY.
Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). She has a thriving concert career, and was a co-founder of the beloved Broadway Barks event each year in Shubert Alley. She has an honorary third Tony (Isabelle Stevenson Award) for her outstanding advocacy and philanthropy. This is a Broadway DIVA tournament, and I mean come on, look at her. That is the quintessential DIVA right there.

"I don't know what to tell you if you're somehow on the fence here. Audra Ann McDonald is Broadway's most beloved darling, and that's a quantifiable fact. Look at her award shelf. Her voice could resurrect the dead. She is an Oscar away from EGOT status. She has overcome almost insurmountable racism on the Great White Way. She is everything to me. A triple threat of acting, singing, and dancing where not one takes a backseat and she looks and sounds amazing at all times. "

"I have been besotted by Bernadette Peters (and her bosom) for more than two decades. Her name is synonymous with Broadway. She is THE Broadway Baby. She started in showbusiness as a child and has not left in seven decades. Her voice is emblematic of a time when we let people with unique, fascinating, wildly different voices star in shows rather than have everyone bow to the BA-ification of Broadway where everyone sounds the same and no one is distinctive."

Their Ring , Their Rules: How The Kliq’s Influence Impacted Pro Wrestling
Professional Wrestlers are like fans in a few ways. They also have lifelong friendships with other wrestlers as well do with people from our childhood whether it be neighbors, teammates , classmates, or colleagues at work. These relationships can be either positive or negative. In the world of professional wrestling, a group of five wrestlers with different personalities came together to create one of the most influential groups. This group is known as The Kliq.
The Kliq was a group consisting of Kevin Nash ( Diesel ) , Razor Ramon ( Scott Hall ) , Shawn Michaels , Hunter Hearst Helmsley ( Paul ‘Triple H ’ Levesque), and X-PAC/Syxx/123 Kid ( Sean Waltman). The group was mainly known backstage and forming in the WWF in the 90s. The Kliq would hold a little power by helping each other advance their careers and use it to influence their rivals’ careers in a negative light. The group caused some controversy in May of 1996 after a match at a house show at Madison Square Garden. This would be known as the ‘ Curtain Call ’. They would break kayfabe by embracing after the match and embracing each other before Scott Hall and Kevin Nash would leave for WCW. They would also be known for starting the most popular factions in wrestling , D-Generation X (DX), and the New World Order ( nWo). Sean Waltman would be among member of both factions. The group was formed in 1994 by Michaels , Waltman, Nash, and Hall. Levesque would join in 1995 after leaving WCW for WWF. Shawn Michaels would state that the name for their group came from Lex Luger due to them always hanging out backstage. They all had individual success during their careers as well.

He would be a two time WWE Hall of Fame inductee in 2014 as a solo inductee and 2020 as a part of the nWo. Hall passed away at the age of 63 on March 22, 2022. His nickname was The Bad Guy.

He is also a martial artist and is currently signed to a WWE Legends contract.
Tumblr media
Paul Michael Levesque ( Triple H ) was born July 27,1969. He is a nine time WWE Champion, a five time World Heavyweight Champion, two time WWF European Champion, one time WWE Tag Team Champion ( with Shawn Michaels) , five time Intercontinental Champion , 1997 King of The Ring , seventh Triple Crown Champion, winner of the 2002 and 2016 Royal Rumbles , winner of the 2006 Road To WrestleMania Tournament Winner , second Grand Slam Champion , two time WWF World Tag Team Champion ( 1 with Shawn Michaels and 1 with Stone Cold Steve Austin ) . Triple H would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 as a member of DX. He is now the head of Creative and Chief Content Officer of WWE.
My Final Thoughts:
The Kliq is the , if not , one of the most influential factions in pro wrestling history. They changed the game. All of these wrestlers are legends in their own way. I also adore their friendship as well. I’ll be meeting Kevin Nash at WRESTLECADE this year and I’m hoping to meet X-PAC there too!
Love You All,
- Kay

basic post for if you want to get into superformula
superformula is the top flight of motorsport in japan, home to the fastest single seaters after f1. it's been around since 1973, which is quite a while!
4 races of the season may have passed but it is not too late and since there is increased interest this year i thought people might want to know, so...
the format
there are 22 cars and 2 groups of qualifying, Q1A and Q1B. the top 6 of each group then go on to fight for pole in Q2. each session is 7 min long.
the polesitter gets 3 points, starting p2 gets you 2 points, starting p3 gets you 1 point. this makes qualifying more important than other series imo
the races are typically 40ish laps; over 250km. you are given 2 sets of tyre compounds and you need to use both during the race, which means everyone must pit at some point. expect strategies like an f2 feature race.
the race winner gets 20 points. p2 gets 15, p3 gets 11, p4 gets 8, p5 gets 6. p6 down to p10 gets 5 to 1 point.
the drivers
they are mostly japanese, clearly. the radio and bulk of the onsite interviews are in japanese, but english comms will translate so i think it's not a problem. also the interviewer switches languages at the drop of a hat she's insane (in a good way).
i'm going to introduce the names you might have heard of in other series. but shoutout to tomoki nojiri, the current reigning champion.
ok. if you're reading this chances are you've heard of liam lawson (#15) and his exploits in this series thus far. one of marko's twinks-in-waiting and arguably the most promising one rn. has had a decent amount of lore in his career for his age thanks to dtm. and twitch 💀 bffs with yuki tsunoda and appeared on dts bc of it
ryo hirakawa (#20), the beloved little brother in the toyota gazoo racing #8, won le mans and the wec wdc as a rookie. youngest ever super formula driver. has come close, but has never won the championship. which he should bc he's won super gt and japan f3 already and if he wins this it's the japanese triple crown. bffs with nick cassidy of fe championship leader fame (sorry i had to mention it somehow)
kamui kobayashi (#7), who is somehow driving and being his own team principal in wec (where he coincidentally also drives a toyota #7). was in f1, has multiple wec titles to his name. but no super formula title either. in fairness i doubt it was ever his main focus. still fun to have him around.
if you've followed f2 since like 2018? you'll recognise some names such as nirei fukuzumi #12 (cousin nirei if you follow albon_pets, also has been sf vice-champion), nobuharu matsushita #50 (the embodiment of that tomato girl aesthetic on tiktok), giuliano alesi #36 (son of the jean alesi), and cem bolukbasi #55 (most recent f2 to sf grad alongside liam)
the calendar
ok there are only 5 races left.
sugo, 16-18 june
fuji, 14-16 july
motegi, 18-20 august
suzuka double header, 27-29 october
that's it! i'm new to this too tbh and i understand the timezones are pretty ass for people that aren't in the asia pacific region but i hope this helps you out regardless!

I found a great idea from one of my all-time favorite bands. Ten questions and answers about my live concert experiences. I had posted them on my sister site @ourladyofomega, but this is the remix. I took the time to explain each one in full.
Dollar values double with each one.
First concert: Dream Theater + Big Wreck @ Vanderbilt Planetarium. A former “friend” became the lucky winner of a radio-station giveaway. The prize? 16 free tickets to this show. We ended up with balcony seats and my “friend” invited our former co-worker from the department store we used to work at.
Last concert: Cold Waves XI (Lana Del Rabies + Ash Code + Sierra + JK Flesh + Orphx + Front Line Assembly w. Skold) @ Le Poisson Rouge. Part of the Triple Crown Victory Weekend that consisted of meeting my Italian-Irish family at a cousin’s engagement party (Friday), and getting an amazing cakeday gift box from a Welsh girl in Detroit (Saturday). This was a (Sunday) show that I waited at the last-minute to purchase tickets and wound up going. Who in the fuck’s idea was it to not have a NYC Cold Waves this year?
Worst concert: none. I make sure all shows I go to are ones to remember. But, if you ask me about the worst band I saw, then Hemlock takes that title. They opened with Meshuggah and Ministry (headliners). Everyone in Irving Plaza just stood there silent seeing this outdated nu-metal band trying to get it going. They were still unknowns after being fifteen years of band, and looks like no one remembers them after that. Good.
Loudest concert: Dream Theater + Big Wreck. Did I say this was my first-ever concert? I had no idea how loud it was going to be. Without question, this one was deafening. I’m not sugarcoating it. I had to cover my ears the entire time up in the balcony seats because all I heard was this shrieking wall of white noise. I remember almost nothing of that night other than the fact that I was there.
Best concert: Hospital Productions' 20th (Godflesh + Prurient + Orphx + etc.) @ Warsaw. This was at a time when I started taking the NYC scene seriously. I just got out of nine months of stay-at-home post-surgery recovery, and I had a new clarity coming out of it. Hospital Productions 20th marked an important point in my life: it made me decide that this was the place and people I wanted to be associated with. I also got to see some amazing artists: Dominick Fernow / Prurient, Orphx, Dedekind Cut, Nothing, and Godflesh. Three of those artists I’ve already seen twice in one point in life and another.
Seen the most: Uniform (3) @ Output, Saint Vitus, and Knockout Center. There was a bill with Uniform opening, then Pharmakon, Prurient, Aaron Dilloway with Genesis P. Orridge, and Merzbow. The line to get in Output was pretty long that I missed half of Uniform’s set and didn’t know who they were until I got more into them. I finally redeemed myself to see them in their entirety at Saint Vitus with a lineup of Michael Berdan, Ben Greenberg, touring drummer Michael Blume, and bassist Jenna Rose of Anatomy. Redemption fulfilled. The third? At Sacred Bones 15th. They were an added bonus right after Jim Jarmusch / Squrl, so why not?
Most surprising: Sacred Bones 15th @ Knockout Center. I have dreams where I end up in so many weird places that could have existed but didn’t. They are no different from the places I experienced. Downstairs record stores, schools, quiet snowy roads, city streets and highways. It’s an alternate reality that’s slightly shifted within itself. I entered Queens’ Knockout Center for Sacred Bones’ 15th where Constant Smiles started the evening so quietly. I was blown away by the first moments of it. People were standing and sitting on the floor in silence during the set. The sinking sun’s rays blasted through the venue’s windows giving light to the current space, as if this show started in the wee hours of the day. This was surreal! It wasn’t anything like I ever experienced before. But that’s not all. What other show I went to had a lecture hall on the line-up ? LD Deutsch’s essay about time, which had everyone sit in classroom setting. I said to myself: “these weird things are happening that normally aren’t. Am I dreaming, or am I in a dream?!” I look back and it was an amazing experience. Nothing like it ever since.
Happy I got to see: Skinny Puppy + Lead Into Gold @ Irving Plaza. No other show I went to had the biggest one-day payoff. You will all kill me when I say this, but I once told myself that it was no big deal if I never got to see Skinny Puppy. WRONG. They announced a farewell tour, and I asked myself how big of a deal that was. I quickly reconsidered. I got my tickets the minute they went up for sale. So what did $150.00 buy me? An unforgettable experience; that’s what. Meeting up with five Tumblr mutuals to see Lead Into Gold and one of Skinny Puppy’s final legendary shows. We had pizza nights, walks around Manhattan, car rides to club night for an amazing after-party, and just shilling around absorbing an experience that’s very rare to have. And, as a special bonus, meeting Ministry's Paul Barker and buying merch- from him. I still can’t believe it. It’s very rare to have Perfect 10-days in my life. This was indeed one of them.
Wish I could have seen: none. I have seen all my desired bands on my list. Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Killing Joke, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Front Line Assembly. That leaves KMFDM the only one left on my bucket list. I’ve seen other artists I wanted to with little or no effort. Those were Indecision, Unsane, Bauhaus, Linkin Park, Cold Cave, Snoop Dogg, Boy Harsher, Atari Teenage Riot, Pharmakon, Prurient, Merzbow, Black Marble, Nas…I could go further if you want me to. I have all day.
Next concert: I’m still on the fence to go see KEN Mode + Hide @ TV Eye and / or Balvanera @ Synthicide. I may not go, because I decided not to do anything by myself again after seeing both of last year’s shows with mutuals. But, we shall see. Wanna' play? Be my guest.

2024 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival In Photos: A Spa-tacular Saratoga Weekend
---
The 2024 Belmont stakes festival was pretty amazing. I don't know which race I enjoyed most, so here's my favorite 10 in no particular order:
Thorpedo Anna crushed the G1 Acorn, stamping herself has the absolute best 3yo filly and possibly the best 3yo period
The 3-way grey photo in the G2 Belmont Gold Cup, where The Grey Wizard got the win and a trip to the Gr1 Melbourne Cup if they choose to accept it.
Book'em Danno got a huge win in the G1 Woody Stephens with Nutella Fella closing like a freight train to get the show money off a 9month layoff.
Didia took the G1 New York, her first G1 win in the US after scoring 3 Gr1s in her native Argentina
Dornoch's gutsy G1 Belmont win – giving his dam Puca a second Triple Crown leg after his big brother Mage won last year's G1 Kentucky Derby
Cogburn setting the track on fire, setting a new North American record for 5 1/2 furlongs by winning the G1 Jaipur in 59.8s – the first horse to run 5 1/2 furlongs in under a minute.
Idiomatic and Randomized dueling under the wire in the G1 Ogden Phipps with Pretty Mischievous right behind them in third. Love to see the distaff division really heating up.
Baby Yoda putting on one of his spectacular performances to fly home to get his first graded stakes win in the G2 True North.
National Treasure putting on a show in the G1 Met Mile.
Venti Valentine getting back to the winners circle in the Critical Eye stakes on NY bred showcase Sunday.

One of the giants of American racing in the 20th century, Seattle Slew left an indelible mark on the sport on and off the track. Purchased for only $17,500 due to his relatively obscure breeding and awkward appearance (one observer noting that he "looked like a mule"). He went on to win champion 2 year old honors, champion 3 year old and Horse of the Year in 1977, and champion older horse at 4. A charismatic and fierce competitor, he was the first undefeated Triple Crown winner and went on to be one of the most influential thoroughbred sires of all time. He died in 2002, 25 years to the day after his Kentucky Derby victory. He was 28.

This is an original 1937 photo of Rosemont and trainer Dick Handlin at Santa Anita Race Track. Rosemont should have earned the sobriquet "the Giant Killer" for his racing career. Although he is famous for defeating Seabiscuit in the 1937 Santa Anita Handicap, he also bested Triple Crown winner Omaha in the 1935 Withers and outlasted Discovery in the 1936 Narragansett Special. Rosemont was bred in Virginia by Edward McLean, the owner of both the Washington Post and the Hope Diamond. He was sired by The Porter, a son of Sweep and was out of Garden Rose by the immortal Colin. William DuPont purchased Garden Rose while she was carrying Rosemont from a dispersal of McLean's bloodstock. As a two year old, Rosemont's best performance was his victory by four lengths over the nice filly Nellie Flag in the 1934 Eastern Shore Handicap in stakes record time. He finished second to both Chance Sun in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and to Psychic Bid in the Hopeful. He came up lame while preparing for the Pimlico Futurity and was retired for the season. His first start back was a second place finish to Plat Eye in an allowance race in May 1935. His next start would be the Withers Stakes where he would meet not only Plat Eye, but the winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness - Omaha. Most commentators dismissed Rosemont as a sprinter who couldn't carry his speed very far and was sent off at 8-1 with Omaha at 1-2. While the pace was very fast, Rosemont was not on the lead, but had settled into third with Omaha just behind. As they turned for home, Rosemont took over from a tiring Plat Eye and held off Omaha by a length and a half in the fastest Withers since Jamestown's victory in 1931. Two weeks later Omaha would register an easy victory in the Belmont Stakes over a muddy track and over Rosemont. His third place finish that day would come at a price as he would be out of action until late September after wrenching himself badly in the sloppy going. In his return to the races, Rosemont was unable to find the winner's circle, finishing fourth in an allowance at Harvre de Grace, sixth in the Jerome, second in the San Vicente Handicap and another fourth in the San Antonio Handicap. On February 22, 1936 he went postward in the Santa Anita Handicap with fourteen others including Time Supply, Azucar, Top Row and the favorite, the mighty Discovery. The race through the stretch was nothing short of a slug fest among Time Supply, Top Row and Rosemont. Foul claims were lodged by both jockeys against Top Row, the winner. While the finish was allowed to stand, it was conceded that Rosemont would have won but for the interference at a critical juncture. His stature was greatly enhanced with this third place finish, but the rough treatment he received that day caused him to be laid up for at least six months. Rosemont returned in August to second place finishes in both the Delaware and Aqueduct Handicaps. In September he was entered in the Narragansett Special where he would carry 121 to Discovery's 130. Initially Rosemont broke slowly and was sixth at the half mile, but jockey Harry Richards found an opening on the rail, and gunned Rosemont through. Now he was in the lead and was suddenly clear by 1 1/2 lengths entering the stretch. At this point Jon Bejshak untangled Discovery from the pack and began his drive. Soon he was bearing down on Rosemont with every stride. Even with Discovery lapped on him, Rosemont refused to quit and held off the great champion by a neck at the finish. He would begin his 1937 campaign in California with a second attempt at the Santa Anita Handicap as his objective. Rosemont began slowly with a fifth to Seabiscuit in an allowance race, but would turn the tables on him in the San Antonio carrying top weight of 122, while giving the Biscuit 7lbs. For the Santa Anita Handicap, Rosemont would draw post 17 out of the 18 horses entered. At the start Rosemont was eleventh and would stay there through the first half mile while Boxthorn and Special Agent set a blistering pace with the first quarter in 22 2/5 and the half in 45 4/5. Seabiscuit was fourth at this juncture and would take the lead as they turned for home with Rosemont moving into fourth just behind Time Supply. Relentlessly he closed the gap with Seabiscuit until at last he had put a nose in front. This memorable finish over the great Seabiscuit would be the last time Rosemont would get to the winners circle. He would register disappointing finishes in both the Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps coming up lame in the latter race. While Rosemont is best remembered for his victory over Seabiscuit in the Big Cap, his wins over both Omaha and Discovery were no less impressive. He raced in an age of giants and more than held his own.

while i usually keep this blog focused on art and bugs, movies are my third big passion, and since i don't believe in streaming services i don't have a spotify wrapped for 2022 to show off but i do have a letterboxd account so i felt like going through my 2022 movie watching stats. this post is basically for me alone and will be obnoxiously long so i'll put in a read more thing here out of courtesy:
Tumblr media
ooh so close to almost 1000 hours of movies! still 718 films is pretty good, though that does also include around 80 or so shorts, mostly animations, that i also logged.
Tumblr media
i was averaging around 2 movies per day for the year. being 500 miles away from all your friends, family, and partner does give you a lot of free time it turns out. the most movies i watched in a single week, december 10-16, was 28. the weeks i only watched a couple things were either when i was visiting my partner or too depressed to even watch movies
Tumblr media
one of the things i've done this year to keep myself sane in isolation was to stream movies for friends. however since i have multiple non-overlapping friend groups, there were a number of movies i watched multiple times because i have a deep psychological and emotional need to share weird shit with the people i care about. NOVA SEED, FANTASY MISSION FORCE, and BUDDHA'S PALM were the triple crown winners this year.
Tumblr media
i only watched 7 movies that came out in 2022. my sweet spot is genre movies made from the late 70s through the mid-90s which you can see clearly if you look at my lifetime stats. predictably, i have very strong opinions about practical effects and stunts and film stock
my ratings spread for 2022 is about what it normally is for other years with a lot of things ending up in the 3.5-4 star range. maybe i'm just generous with my stars or maybe i just like what i like and try to not watch things i won't like unless they're bad in a fun way but i really feel like i've been moving away from the whole so-bad-its-good thing over the years and focusing on things that i unironically like--though these are often films that other people do categorize as bad or so-bad-its-good.
Tumblr media
my most watched actors is a bunch of golden age hong kong dudes because i went super hard on the kung fu and wuxia films this year. like about half of these are big name stars and the other half are less well-known character actors that still are in like 200 movies playing assorted emperors and evil administrators. really glad to see my main man lo lieh running away with first place. he's most well known for playing evil white-haired kung fu masters usually named pai mei or variations of that, but he's also played the protagonist or antihero of a number of great films like FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH or THE FUGITIVE (1972, not the harrison ford one). my favorite role of his is without question Bi Gu of East Island the rascally kung fu wizard who hollers his name from offscreen before every time he enters a scene in BUDDHA'S PALM (1982).
also very pleased to see one of my favorite american character actors, brion james squeaking his way onto the list, though sad that he got separated from his best friend and frequent collaborator tim thomerson, who i think is just below the cut here.
Tumblr media
most watched directors. i've been a huge fan of the very recently deceased albert pyun for years now, largely on the strength of his absolute god-tier masterpiece NEMESIS (1992) though he has a number of other very entertaining movies (RADIOACTIVE DREAMS, CYBORG) and also a cavalcade of very bad movies that are nonetheless all fascinating in their own ways. i could go on about him at length but this post is long enough. maybe another time.
other than that, chor yuen (THE MAGIC BLADE, DESCENDANT OF THE SUN) and chang cheh (CRIPPLED AVENGERS, FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS) are gods of early wuxia cinema and fucking rule, and keita amemiya's 90s work (ZEIRAM, MECHANICAL VIOLATOR HAKAIDER, CYBER NINJA) are pinnacles of kickass japanese practical effects work.
i also watched a lot of russ meyer and john waters films because i'm a pevert.
Tumblr media
this is mostly just a reminder to check out my WUXIA WIZARD WARS tumblr post and letterboxd list if you like movies about wizards shooting lasers at each other and summoning fucked up monsters and shit like that
Tumblr media
finally, because i have a brain disease, i made a list of the 100 best films i watched this year, mostly first-time watches but probably like 15-20 rewatches that i especially enjoyed or think more people should know about or give another shot. if i didn't already have way too many projects i'd consider setting up another sideblog just going through all these one by one with reviews and screenshots but that's a lot of work and i am a tired old man. i might give an occasional highlight post like i did for THE BARON AGAINST THE DEMONS
and i guess that's about it? this has been an especially heavy year for golden age hong kong kung fu and wuxia films but i explored a lot of other interesting places and times and genres and microgenres and have a lot more i plan on checking out next year. i've got stacks and stacks of unwatched japanese V-cinema and pinku violence and kaiju and tokusatsu films; tons of giallo and hammer horror and eurotrash lesbian vampire flicks; classic westerns, revisionist westerns, spaghetti westerns; SOV horror, eastern european stop motion, hong kong CAT III sleaze, russian postapocalyptic dirges, poliziotteschi, krimi, and noir films; AIP and PM Entertainment action schlock; italian mad max ripoffs, italian alien ripoffs, italian conan ripoffs; approximately 300 movies with NINJA, BLOOD, or SHAOLIN in their titles; and probably some other shit too.
finally, if you've made it this far and you're a nasty little film freak like me i'll let you in on a secret: i have copies of every single one of these movies on my hard drive. literally thousands of movies dug out of dozens of digital dumpsters with my own two greasy grabby raccoon paws. if any of them particularly catch your interest but you can't find a copy, well you can maybe slip old professor bfly a little private request and get yourself a copy of whatever you need. it may take some time since i only have so many google drive accounts unless someone wants to subsidize a deluxe mega.nz subscription for me to mass-upload things to. i also have a soulseek account sharing the entire hoard but it's very slow and not always online but you can DM me for that as well. again though you may have to be patient because i am old and tired and slow and have a full time job and a hundred dumb hobbies and social anxiety and generalized brain damage
happy new year everyone now go watch a movie about some dudes kicking the shit out of each other for me

Secretariat
Rating: 10/10
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over her ailing father's Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery -- with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin -- manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years.

Review:
I saw this movie when it came out in theaters (2010) and I remember being in complete awe. My mom and I were running late so we didn't have time to get popcorn or anything. We snuck in right during the opening credits and took the first seats we could find, which were only a couple of rows back from the movie screen. We basically had to look up the entire time which wasn't our ideal situation but in regard to this movie, I thought it was perfect and the best way to experience Secretariat.
I re-watched the movie today with my mom in honor of the Preakness Stakes and it was just as good as I remember, maybe even better in some ways. As I've gotten older, I've grown to appreciate the art of movies more. I've also taken a couple college/graduate courses in movies to fulfill elective credits which has expanded my knowledge and increased my interest in them.
This movie wasn't a huge award winner and it had mixed reviews from critics. Some claimed it was predictable, which makes sense considering it's based on a true story (do people not know that?). Some claimed it was cheesy and similar to Hallmark movies. Some thought it was full of cliches and lacked character development and a decent written plot. To each their own.
There also were comments about how the film wasn't entirely realistic, which is true. Some things were altered. Most films based on true stories are, though, as it makes for better plots or viewings.
There was a lot of ground covered in 2 hours, the plot spanning over about 6 years or so. There were times when I didn't know what year it was but I felt the script did as good a job as it could have to provide those details. I'm not sure how they could have made it more in-depth without dragging it out, to be honest. Anything past 2 hours seems to be extremely hit or miss. So given the circumstances I wasn't put off by how they went about this.
I felt the characters had enough depth to add to the storyline. Of course part of me wished they went into more detail, such as with Penny's kids or with Eddie/Hollies/Miss Ham etc. but again, I'm not sure how feasible that would have been with the 2-hour time stamp.
I thought the cinematography and camera direction were very well done (I'm not a professional though so this is just a personal opinion). I felt the lighting and camera angles contributed to a sense of power and intensity consistent throughout the film. It also added warmth, joy, and comfort.
Tumblr media
I thought the music selection and scores were also well done. Nick Glennie-Smith provides a selection of original scores for the film I thought added to the intensity of it and conveyed certain emotions words couldn't. I wish the scores were available via Spotify but I can only find them on YouTube. And of course the selection of songs chosen for this film were well done. The scene of Big Red, or Secretariat, rounding the corner at the Belmont Stakes is one of my all-time favorite scenes in cinematic history. The low camera angle, the lighting, the sounds of the horse followed by the chorus of "Oh Happy Day" all contributed to this euphoria feeling that's hard to replicate just by thought. Anything that can provoke that kind of emotion, in my opinion, is worthy of some kind of recognition.
Tumblr media
Overall, I thought the film was an exciting watch. It's one of my favorites and one of my comfort movies. I thought it did a decent job of sticking close to the actual story (with the real Penny making an appearance) and it was able to portray a certain intensity and excitement that can be hard to achieve properly. It's worth a watch in my opinion :)

Secretariat Belmont Stakes 1973 & extended coverage (HD Version - NEW!)
About 3 weeks ago I posted Secretariat’s explosive Preakness Stakes run. This Saturday is the 3rd Jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont. While there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, it is the 50th anniversary of Big Red’s Triple Crown. This is his run in the final jewel. It is possibly the most impressive display of athleticism I’ve ever seen. Another hand ride(Turcotte didn’t use his crop), and a 25 length victory. Chick Anderson with the famous call, “...and he’s moving like a tremendous machine...” Red was unbeatable that day, breaking Sham physically and spiritually, as he suffered a broken leg(not fatal, he was able to be saved) trying to keep pace with Red. Secretariat broke the Stakes record that day, and 50 years later, it still stands. Happy Anniversary Red!
P.S. A lot of the farms let you take tours and you can “meet” the various stallions/mares. Secretariat was retired to Claiborne Farm where he lived out his life being loved and doted on by his fans. He is one of two horses to be buried in an actual coffin(he and Man O’ War are the only two to have actual coffins) and one of 5 buried complete at Claiborne. I wish I could have “met” him. I know people that had and they said that he knew he was special but was always gracious and kind(some stallions are not - looking at you, Palace Malice).

McLaren unveil special Indy 500 Triple Crown liveries | IndyCar
McLaren have unveiled a special set of liveries its three full time cars will run in next month’s Indianapolis 500, commemorating its victories in each of the three ‘Triple Crown’ races. McLaren will run four entries in this year’s Indy 500. Full-season drivers Pato O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Rossi will be joined by Tony Kanaan in a fourth car entered for his final attempt to repeat his 2013 victory in the race. McLaren will run O’Ward, Rosenqvist and Rossi’s cars in special liveries across the month-long event, each commemorating a different win McLaren achieved in each of the three races of the Triple Crown – the Indy 500, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours. Rosenqvist will race a tribute to McLaren’s MP4/2 livery that Alain Prost raced in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix – the team’s first Monte Carlo win in a race that was infamously cut short by a red flag due to rain as Ayrton Senna hunted down Prost for the lead in his Toleman. O’Ward’s number five McLaren will ruin in a black livery reminiscent of the McLaren F1 GTR BMW that won the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours, driven by Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya and JJ Lehto. Rossi’s car will reflect the McLaren papaya orange livery that 1974 Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford raced to victory in the McLaren M16C/D that year. McLaren CEO Zak Brown said the special livery series was intended to celebrate the team’s historic achievements in its 60th year of competition since the team was founded by Bruce McLaren. “We are proud to have achieved motorsport’s prestigious Triple Crown as a constructor,” Brown said. “In our 60th year, we are shining a light on the legacy of the team that Bruce McLaren built and role this plays in fuelling our ambitions for the future of the team. “As a lifelong McLaren fan, I fondly remember watching Alain Prost’s dramatic 1984 Monaco victory and the incredible moment when the team conquered Le Mans on its debut entry. Meanwhile Johnny Rutherford’s first Indy 500 win in papaya is one of the most important moments in McLaren Racing history. I can’t wait to see our four-car star-studded line-up flying the colours of our Triple Crown victories at this year’s Indy 500.” Alexander Rossi’s 1976 McLaren Indy 500 livery Alexander Rossi 2023 Indy 500 livery Johnny Rutherford, McLaren, Indianapolis 500, 1976 Felix Rosenqvist’s 1984 McLaren F1 livery Felix Rosenqvist 2023 Indy 500 livery Alain Prost, McLaren, 1984 Pato O’Ward’s 1995 McLaren Le Mans livery Pato O’Ward 2023 Indy 500 livery Yannick Dalmas/Masanori Sekiya/JJ Lehto, McLaren F1, Le Mans, 1995 IndyCar Browse all IndyCar articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/
