On Project Gutenberg: The Pirates Own Book: Authentic Narratives of the Most Celebrated Sea Robbers, by Charles Ellms, orginally published 1837, with illustrations. An excerpt from "The Adventures and Heroism of Mary Read":
After the birth of Mary, her mother resided in the country for three or four years, until her money was all spent, and her ingenuity was set at work to contrive how to obtain a supply. She knew that her husband's mother was in good circumstances, and could easily support her child, provided she could make her pass for a boy, and her son's child. [...] The ingenuity of the mother being successful, she reared the daughter as a boy. But as she grew up, she informed her of the secret of her birth, in order that she might conceal her sex. The grandmother, however, dying, the support from that quarter failed, and she was obliged to hire her out as a footboy to a French lady. The strength and manly disposition of this supposed boy increased with her years, and leaving that servile employment, she engaged on board a man-of-war.

"Mary Read kills her antagonist": original illustration
A brave and valiant fighter, Mary was also a soldier, though "in every action she conducted herself with the greatest bravery, yet she could not obtain a commission, as they were in general bought and sold. She accordingly quitted that service, and enlisted into a regiment of horse; there she behaved herself so valiantly, that she gained the esteem of all her officers."
The text treats her tragic life sympathetically, concluding:
Though she was inadvertently drawn into that dishonorable mode of life which has stained her character, and given her a place among the criminals noticed in this work, yet she possessed a rectitude of principle and of conduct, far superior to many who have not been exposed to such temptations to swerve from the path of female virtue and honor.

I would not have you think that this was a fight that Hiccup would be proud to look back upon NOW. For Hiccup would grow up to be a Master Swordsman, a Genius of the Art, and this fight, by comparison with the extraordinary skill with which he fought later, was clumsy work, mostly defensive strokes.
Pff... I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not... But I feel like H got nerfed in the movie franchise.
We see him fight with a sword in RttE a bit, we know he's very precise because of when he threw his sword between Drago and his bullhook. (he's also good with a bow and arrow, but does that say anything here?) But beside that? Not much swordfighting. If anything, he's the Rider who fights the least (pretty sure Fishlegs does more fighting than him and if not they're certainly tied) and that's kind of a shame when he's supposed to be this Master Swordsman.
Or so I assume because they decided to give him a sword in Httyd 2. A sword meant to help in communicating with dragons, but still a lethal sword with a sharp blade. And the Httyd franchise is filled with all these references and details from the book series, so...

I would ask you reconsider posting an unauthorized free copy of any trc books. BLLB and TRK almost didn't get published because of book piracy so it's generally bad form. Also, multiple fiction and YA writers have come out about how little they're paid on tight deadlines and Maggie has implied this is at least part of her transition to adult fiction and leaving the TRCverse behind. I'd love to see the fandom grow and expand but I also think we should support artists and writers if we enjoy the things they create.
hey, look at me. do you know that many people around the world do not have access to the wonderful invention that is libraries and cannot afford to spend money on frivolous things such as ya fiction. did you know that anti-piracy is a form of classism and the sooner we destroy the idea that reading is a luxury that one must pay for the sooner our society will become a better more learned institution. maggie will not be hurt by me and a handful of my mutuals sharing a book together i prommy

idk are we forgetting that ed wanted to die like. 2 episodes ago. people be like “staying alive just for one person is so unhealthy” (i don’t fully think that’s my read on it but anyways). being suicidal is by definitely Not Healthy. people stay alive for pets or concerts or other people all the time, and that’s a good thing. working to get to a better place than that comes after, and i would argue that is exactly what the show is showing us with ed rn
yeah that, too!!! i didn’t want to go off about it and trigger people (or myself because i’m actively [redacted]) but, the obsession with keeping everything healthy vs realistic is so weird to me. that’s not the point of this story, or edward’s story, specifically. he’s unmediated in the era of pirates (give or take a few liberties, this is a historical comedy!) and has never been safe or healthy in his life. probably never will be, given the lifestyle.
all that aside, you’re right, it is realistic for suicidal people to cling to that one person/pet/event as a reason. we do it all the goddamn time, it’s human nature. not to mention his reasons for choosing life had nothing to do with stede, not originally. he was listing off normal human experiences/desires (warmth, sex) + wanted to fight for his life before stede showed up and gave him that final boost.
that, to me, is way more realistic and something im really happy the show touched on? suicidal people don’t actually want to die, we want to keep fighting, and having love/connections is one of the things that can push us to continue that fight. whether or not it’s healthy is not the point, because duh, living like that isn’t healthy. wasting time feeling guilty for that is just not a priority. not in life, and not in the themes of the show.
and yes, the show is actually showing us that edward wants to live, he wants to be happy to the best of his abilities, he’s choosing to build friendships and discover who he wants to be. stede helped him realize that, showed him the light, etc, but he’s making the decision to continue that personal journey on his own. the love of his life standing beside him as a supportive beacon is not a bad thing, not even by modern standards. he’s loved + encouraged + thriving and that’s all that can be asked of him tbh!

cooking up new ways for esme to die in canon
#i dont stay committed to ANYTHING on this blog but idc#my current thought: barbossa betraying esme to the navy when the two crews are looking for the cursed gold (thereby significantly increasin#the pearl's crew / his own share)#arranging for jack to be aboard when it happens on a cute lil date with his gf. probably compensated handsomely for the capture of two#captains with a sizeable price on their heads#and i do think lawrence would be involved. maybe also a younger james. (rather see a navy ship at the bottom of the ocean etc etc)#jack obv escapes / survives with the piece of eight which would piss off hector SO much#and tbqh i think barbossa could feign innocence in the ordeal for a good while. considering he's on good terms with jack & esme in the book#and i think him and her would bond over being Gentlemen Pirates with fancy dinners and feathered hats et all#but at the same time. there's not a lot of pieces in that chest for two full-sized pirate crews esp because esme's crew is larger#and jack's romantic interest in esme / his devotion to seeing her get her share / and POSSIBLY even a wavering commitment to actually takin#the chest for themselves (given that esme has an interest in appeasing her ancestors and seeing them at rest as well as knowing abt and#wanting to avoid said curse)#would give barbossa motivation to do what he needed to do to serve himself and his crew first#jack won't separate from her / prioritize the crew over her. so he'll get rid of her himself.#ooc. This is another difference between Hiccup and Horrendous, I believe.
Here in the book, Horrendous (aged 10 still) believes the warning at the front and that's why he doesn't want the coffin to be opened. He believes in the curse to the point of panicking when his father opens a supposedly cursed coffin.
In the movies and shows, Hiccup is a firm sceptic. He's familiar with their rituals and their deities, but doesn't seem to believe in them. Certainly not as much as, say, Fishlegs who was ready to blame disappearing islands on the wrath of Odinn or Thor. Astrid, too, seems to believe when she recalls the tale of her aunt who had to sail off the edge of the world to satisfy Odinn or something.
The only moment we've seen Hiccup believe in any way is when he and his friends made that tribute for Thorr, hoping it would stop the thunderstorms above Berk, thereby keeping scrutiny off Toothless' back.
Even when bones rain down from the sky, he calls it "weird" and still doesn't believe in this Fog Monster that supposedly took Johann's boat in the Breakneck Bog episode in Riders of Berk. He needs hard proof before he believes in anything supernatural or paranormal. (That or Toothless needs to be at risk)
Even so, I still don't think he would've just opened a coffin. Not because he actually believes in curses, but rather out of respect for the person inside.
Maybe it's the difference in age- one is 10, the other 15- maybe it's because the books do hint at magic and the mystic being real. (Apparently, Httyd and TWOO take place in the same universe?) Either way, an interesting difference between the two, for sure.
