Leo looked at his phone for a good second and then left it on his bed, unattended. he ran to your residence hall— it didn’t matter to him that it was quite literally on the other side of campus. he needed to hear you say the words he had been waiting to hear since he was fifteen. he’d always had a slight crush on you, mostly off and on.

But during the summer, he had fallen for you even harder than he thought he could. he never thought that he could love someone as much as he loved you. anyway, he was practically dying as he ran to your dorm! his hair was disheveled, and he was panting a bit. he wasn’t sure if he was sweaty because he was nervous, or because he had just ran to get to your dorm.

He knocked on your door three times.

You jumped out of your bed. you felt like throwing up from how nervous you were. you quickly slid on your slippers, and looked in the mirror before you opened the door for him. (making the poor boy wait). you adjusted your hair, making sure it sat right.

You took a deep breath before opening the door. you almost didn’t, but a voice in your head was telling you that you’d be an idiot if you didn’t open the door. your hands gripped the doorknob, and then unlocked it. leo was practically dying because you were taking years to open the stupid door. you finally opened it, getting met by a disheveled-sweaty-flushed leo valdez.

“Hi.” he croaked out, his voice cracking slightly. he felt like he was on fire, literally. he wanted this to be over with! well, no, that’s a lie. he just wanted to be your boyfriend already.

“…Hi.” you answered, your voice was quiet. you had an awkward smile on your face. you were praying that you would just drown at this moment. you’d much rather enjoy that than this.

He cleared his throat, and finally spoke after a long minute of awkward silence. The two looked at each other “I really… really like you. I.. Uh.. You obviously know that already, but I wanna tell you in person?” he said, nodding along with his own words. his hands went to fumble with the hem of his shirt, anxiously waiting for your response.

“I really like you, too.” You replied. you didn’t feel as nervous as anymore when he started to talk. you felt your face getting hotter, and your smile getting bigger. he grinned at you like an idiot.

He thought that he was dreaming when you said you liked him. The start of something. “Really?” He asked, just wanting to hear you say it again. He couldn’t help but grin like an idiot. He thought never in a million years that you’d ever like him! You were totally out of his league. you were so awesome, so pretty, and so sweet.

You nodded again, rolling your eyes. “Yes, really.”

Neuvillette releases a sigh through his nose and continues perusing the documents before him, not even glancing up at the Duke of Meropide. “How fortunate am I to have a friend that is unfailing in pointing out the obvious.”

“In all seriousness, though, are you alright? You look like you haven’t slept a wink for a week.” Wriothesley’s perceptiveness strikes again. The Chief Justice dips his quill into the ink jar and scribbles his signature on the dotted line of a paper upon some recently-overseen hearing. “I haven’t.”

“And you’re not your usual amiable self either. You know, if you’re worried about your wife, there’s a nice Inazuman restaurant that just opened downtown. The Tonkotsu Ramen is divine.”

“I don’t even know if she likes Inazuman food.” Neuvillette isn’t really in the mood to entertain Wriothesley’s company today, but the dark-haired man seems to be making no move to leave. The warden of the Fortress appears to be more than eager to give the Iudex some unsolicited love advice from the ‘love expert’—Wriothesley’s words, not his.

“Everybody likes Inazuman food. Oh, and did you hear that Lyney and Lynette’s holding a massive magic show in two weeks? Maybe you could take her along, have some fun.”

“Did you forget that this marriage is contractual? There isn’t any real reason to take her on dates, Wriothesley.” The Duke’s eyes widen in incredulity at his words. “You don’t mean that. I can just tell that the very cause for your lack of sleep as of late is the very woman you don’t have ‘any real reason’ to take on a date. Do you think I’m stupid? You’re like an open book, Neuvillette.” “The thing that I don’t understand is how adamant you all seem to be on making us into a happy, loving couple. Have you been colluding with Furina in secret?” “She’s had a few cups of tea with me, but that’s besides the point. Isn’t the Madame bedridden with an awful cold right now? I bought some of my favourite tea up here so you and I could share some, but maybe you could take it and have it with her instead. What kind of husband would you be if you didn’t help nurse your ill wife back to health?”

That worries Neuvillette. “Do you think she’d be offended by my lack of checking-in and visits? I already had some chicken soup made for her yesterday, though.” Wriothesley’s spirits lift once he sees he’s starting to get through to the clueless man. “If I was your wife, I’d be insulted, whether contractually married or not. And chicken soup, Neuvillette? How cliché. I bet you told her maid to not let her know you requested it for her.” Neuvillette’s subsequent silence was answer enough.

Wriothesley rolls his eyes. “Whatever happened last week that caused this rift between you two is just silly. So, tell me—what did happen?” “Uh…” Neuvillette’s ears flush red at the memories that instantly flood him. “N-Nothing much.” “Did you two kiss or something? Oh, yeah, real scandalous. It’s almost as if husbands and wives don’t do that kind of thing!”

“We’re husband and wife on paper and by arrangement only, Wriothesley. It would be going against the contract to initiate any kind of intimate contact with each other like that. And no, we didn’t ‘kiss’. It was just…” The Duke leans forward in anticipation for the Iudex’s answer. “Well?”

“…Well, we ran into each other at the beach in the dead of night and talked.”

“Did you two do the deed?” “No!” The Chief Justice’s entire face flares bright pink at Wriothesley’s innuendo. “Goodness, Wriothesley, how on earth did you come to that conclusion? Did you just come here today to bother me about such private matters?”

“Kissed! Kissed—we almost kissed.” Neuvillette waves a hand in front of face in defeat, trying to ease his embarrassment. He didn’t want to think about how if they weren’t interrupted, it probably would’ve escalated way further. Archons, I sound like a right idiot. He shoots the smug man before him a look. “What books have you been reading? You’re making me seem like an airheaded teenage girl giggling about her first kiss to her gaggle of friends.”

Wriothesley looks almost offended. “The only things I have time to read are reports upon convicts and the management of the Fortress, Your Honour. And I’m sorry, but I really didn’t know you were so sensitive about this matter. As if I didn’t see how you carried her out of the tea party, all bridal style and everything. Looked way too real to just be an act. Isn’t that just so interesting?” Neuvillette purses his lips, throwing Wriothesley a side-long glance. “You have just as wild of an imagination as Furina. I’ll take up your suggestion about the tea, though.” “What about the magic show and restaurant? You could go dine at the restaurant after the show. Don’t you think she’d like that?”

Quiet, the Iudex stares blankly at the document before him, contemplating. Would that be overstepping my bounds…? Oh, to hell with it—I’ve already done so too many times to count. What hurt is a small date going to do?

“…Alright. Your counsel is sound, I suppose.”

“Of course it is. Oh, and do you know when the banquet will be?” “…In two weeks’ time. What day is the show?” “It’s on the Tuesday.”

“The banquet’s on the Friday. Are you going to attend?” “Furina’s…coerced me into attending. I’m going to be stampeded by frenzied mothers desperate to marry off their equally crazed daughters again.” “Careful, or—how do the youngsters call it these days?—she’ll ‘hitch’ you up with someone, too.”

Wriothesley gives him a look. “You sound like a ninety-year-old.”

Neuvillette side-eyes him in return. “And why do you think that is? I can never keep up with the ever-changing colloquialism of the kids these days.”

The Duke shakes his head in amusement, seeing he’s succeeded in his mission and thus can leave. “Alright, old man. Send my get-well wishes to your wife for me. And don’t tell her I sent the tea. It’s supposed to be all you.”

Neuvillette is too polite of a person to tell someone outright to get lost, so he opts to wave for the door. “Yes, yes, I get it, Wriothesley. I’m sure you’ve got plenty of things to attend to, or would you like me to assign you some documents to peruse for me?” Wriothesley instantly gets the message and hurries for the door before Neuvillette can follow through with his threat. “I’ve got a date with the Pankration Ring, so sorry. Have fun with your wife!”

His office door quickly clicks shut. Neuvillette shakes his head and continues on with his work, perturbed.

Neuvillette debated with himself over whether he should deliver the tea to you anonymously, say Wriothesley heard of your sickness and sent it out of friendly well-wishes, or just man-up and go personally brew it for you.

Eventually, Neuvillette decided on the latter.

Now, he stands hovering outside of your bedroom door, hand raised to knock, but hesitance keeps him back. He’s worried you’re sleeping, and would disturb you—and that’s why you knock, idiot—or, if you’re awake, subject himself to even more embarrassment upon the remembrance of what almost happened a week ago. This is a bad, bad idea.

He almost leaps out of his skin when your voice calls out from behind the door, a slightly muffled: “Neuvillette, I know you’re out there. Stop dawdling and come in.” Resigning himself to his fate, he clicks open the door and shuffles in, embarrassed. “My apologies. I was worried you were sleeping and that I would be disturbing you.” You haven’t looked up from the book you’re reading. He recognises the book title with a start—The Soul of a Human. The box of tea in his hand almost slips out of his grip at his shock. “Well, you were fretting over it outside my door for five minutes.”

“I…apologise. Am I intruding?” He understands why you would be grumpy—your voice is awfully stuffy from the cold, and your face is pale. And lo and behold—you’re in the very same nightgown as you were that night. Neuvillette averts his gaze, ears burning. Ugh, what’s going on?

“No, you’re alright.” You pick up a bookmark to your side and slide it into the book, closing it, giving him your full attention. You look up at him, before your stare falls to the item in his hold. “What’s that you’ve got there?” “Oh, uh…” He glances down at it, searching for the right words. Wriothesley told me not to tell her he sent it… Neuvillette finally manages out, “…I brought some tea to clear your head. Care for a cup?” “How thoughtful of you!” An abrupt swell of pride at your thrilled affirmation envelops him, and confuses him. Ignoring it best he can, he ahems and turns for the coffee table. There’s a rustle of bedsheets and covers and you’re padding across the carpet for him. “Here, I’ll go ask Anaïs for a fresh pot of tea.”

“No, you must rest.” Neuvillette doesn’t even think before he’s already put a hand upon your shoulder, stopping you in your tracks for the door. You turn to look up at him in surprise, and he quickly removes his hand. “Erm—I can go and ask her. Just relax. You need as much bed rest as you can get, yes?” You stare at him silently, and he takes in your appearance. Hair unbrushed, up in a messy bun with wild strands of it flaring out, lips pale and chapped, nose red with your cold and your eyes are sunken with fatigue. I was a fool, staying out for as long as we did that night. But, despite it all, seeing your complexion bare and sickly, he’s rather struck with admiration.

He doesn’t realise he’s staring even more intensely than you when your quiet call of his name snaps him from his stupor. Blinking, Neuvillette takes a small step back. “Uh, sorry? Yes, I’ll go brew it.”

“That’s not what I sai—” But he’s already rushing for the door, leaving your hand outstretched in a feeble motion to stop him. Now it’s your turn to blink in bewilderment.

Man, he sure likes to stare. The bouts of chills you’ve been getting are traceless now, heat left in its place. You’ve never had someone look at you so appreciatively, and you’re sure you look like a gremlin right now. Neuvillette was dead silent and just studying you intently, like he was looking at the moon.

You move to pull open a window, disliking how abruptly hot the room has gotten. Should I do something about my appearance? He’s already seen you practically naked, and that thought makes you blush even more. Anxiously patting at your hair, you head for the bathroom and take a look at your reflection, almost recoiling in disgust. I look ghastly! You quickly run the tap water, splashing at your face, sucking in a breath at the chill of it. Goodness, no wonder he ran out of here! I look like something out of a nightmare.

You jump when the sound of your bedroom door clicking open reaches you and, with a rush of panic, you whirl around and shut the bathroom door. Soft footsteps pause, and Neuvillette’s voice calls out, “[Name], are you alright?” “Fine! Just—one moment, please.” You hurriedly pat your face and hands dry, then moving to yank your hair tie from your bun, wincing at the sharp pull. That’s right, I haven’t brushed my hair for a few days, I was so sick! It must be a rat’s nest, and I probably have split ends now! No matter how much you try to pry the tie from your hair, it won’t budge, and it hurts like hell.

Okay, stop panicking. Why are you even panicking anyway? It’s not like you can help looking so dreadful at present. What are you trying to do—impress him?

“Ow, ow, ow, ow,” you softly whimper, bent over the sink awkwardly, gently trying to untangle the snag your hair tie has hit. You forget Neuvillette has exceptional hearing when three soft taps knock on the bathroom door.

“Are you sure you’re alright? You sound like you’re in pain.” He catches you by surprise, and you jump, hand still in your hair, ripping some strands out. Involuntarily, you yelp, cursing under your breath, arms sore from the angle. You hear Neuvillette’s polite, “I’m coming in” before the door clicks open.

Great. I wouldn’t blame him if he started laughing. One look in the mirror and it’s quite clear just how ridiculous you look right now. Hair flopping over your face, the end of it still tied together. Hot with humiliation, you rush to explain. “I…was trying to untie my hair, since it’s been up like this for a few days—” “Would you like some help?” Neuvillette shuts the door and approaches, hands reaching for your hair slowly, as if awaiting your permission. Seeing no other way, you nod feebly, your hair bouncing comically with the movement. “…Yes, please.” Neuvillette begins to remove his gloves; biting down on the material covering his middle finger and sliding it off smoothly. The action is so minimal, so natural—but you can’t help but find the sight extremely attractive. His eyes meet yours, and he tilts his head slightly in silent inquiry to your ogling of him. You look away, fidgeting. Things are starting to get out of hand.

At least there isn’t a hint of amusement in his face—he doesn’t seem to find your current state funny at all. You were expecting him to tease you, maybe chuckle at your silly state, but he’s perfectly expressionless. As usual, you suppose. Although, he does seem to smile a lot at you. His eyes are soft, too.

“Where is it tangled?” His voice is quiet. Neuvillette’s fingers wind into your hair, quickly finding the hair tie and observing the state of it. You have to keep your head bowed awkwardly—but you suppose it’s nice that he’s significantly taller than you, so you don’t have to lean over too far. You reach up and lightly grab his hand, guiding it to where it is specifically twisted. “There. It’s knotted, I think.”

“Mm, it is.” His fingers are gentle, never tugging or pulling, just carefully working away at untying the knot in your hair as best he can. “It’s not so bad it has to be cut, though. You are fortunate.”

Relief fills you. “I’m glad. I suppose you have to deal with such incidents yourself with your hair?”

Neuvillette chuckles. Gods, his laugh is so nice. “From time to time, yes. But I take very good care of my hair. Wouldn’t it be so silly if the Chief Justice oversaw a trial with matted hair?” “They wouldn’t let you in,” you laugh back, straightening slightly as your back muscles are beginning to ache. “Do you ever tie your hair up? Or try different hairstyles?” “I…can’t say I have.” Neuvillette shakes his hand, some strands of your hair falling to the floor, before he continues untangling your hair again. “I think I prefer it out, with just the ends tied.”

“I see.” You’re the opposite—having your hair down all the time gets in your way. So, you opt to have it up in a hair claw or gathered on top of your head in a messy bun. You really can’t fathom how Neuvillette gets around so easily without sitting on his hair or getting it stuck in doors. But then again, you suppose, he has been wandering around like this for centuries, so he ought to have learned how to manage it by now.

But the little girl in you always wants to reach for his hair. It looks perfect to braid and brush to your heart’s content, but you wouldn’t dare ask. All you know is that it’s soft and very well-kept, considering its lucent shine and the handful of times he’s picked you up and you had to hold onto his neck.

Such a train of thought makes you curious—what’s his morning routine? Nightly routine? Does he put his hair up in a net before sleeping? How long does it take him to brush it out each morning? Doesn’t it get bothersome at times? Has he ever had a haircut? And what are those blue things in his hair?

You voice that last question. “Neuvillette, what are those pretty blue ornaments hanging down from your head?” The movement of his hands in your hair freezes, and you immediately wish you could take your words back. You and your big mouth, [Name]! Haven’t you learned how to mind your business yet? Biting down on the inside of your right cheek, you move to apologise. “I’m sorry if it was a personal question, they’re just so peculi—”

“They’re, uh…” His quiet reply silences you, and Neuvillette begins to untangle your hair again. “I can understand why you’re curious. I can’t explain it, but they’re just…well…” “I dare say, they look like antennas,” you offer amiably, hoping to ease his clear awkwardness. “Or horns?” Then you giggle lightly. “Are you a dragon or something?”

Neuvillette swallows, beginning to sweat bullets. You just hit the nail on the head, and I can’t even tell you. He really can’t think of an excuse for them, but he isn’t about to indulge you in his secret. “I’ve been around for a long time, [Name], so surely it can’t be strange to realise that I may be some kind of mystical creature.”

“You said you’re not a vishap, so are you a dragon?”

“…Not exactly. I can’t really tell you, to be frank.” Sometimes, he wishes you weren’t so perceptive. It’s a valuable trait, yes, and he admires you for it, but it’s uncomfortable when he witnesses you practically unravelling his own secrets he’s kept very down-low right before his very eyes. Your quiet, observant demeanour is worth its weight in gold, but he wasn’t aware that you had been silently studying him also.

Well, it makes sense, if you think about it. You’re both married, and live in the same residence. It would be more logical to consider it strange if you weren’t curious about him—as he is you.

“Oh, I won’t pry, then.” It isn’t that factor that bothers him, he’s just a bit worried you’ll become suspicious, connect the dots—and it’s game over for him. If you haven’t already.

Silence reigns for a few moments, Neuvillette just gently unknotting your hair from the tie before finally pulling the band from your hair completely, holding it out to you. With the de-tanglement came a lot of pulled hairs, and a clump of some is still latched onto the tie. “There you are. Would you like to shower and wash your hair before joining me for tea?” “Uh, yes, I will.” Embarrassment fills you again. You glance at yourself in the mirror, letting loose a humourless laugh. “I look ridiculous.”

Neuvillette surprises you by patting your head, much like he does to the Melusines he’s so fond of. He’s smiling at you with that same gentle smile, too. “You look cute, if anything. There’s no need to be embarrassed. Things like this happen.” You stare at him. He thinks I look…cute?

Neuvillette appears to be perturbed by his own words. His eyes widen a fraction. “Uh—that is, there’s no need to put yourself down. Feel free to take your time.”

You, again, don’t get a chance to answer as he’s already whirled around and shut the door behind him.

The bathroom door clicks open and you step out, towel wrapped around your head, hair up. You look and feel much more refreshed than before, face washed and moisturised. Neuvillette glances up from the newspaper he was reading and turns to you. “You look much better. I managed to keep the tea warm. Care for some?” “Of course.” You take a seat beside him, briefly shooting a glance towards the newspaper. And, as expected, the headlines are still going on about the announcement of Neuvillette’s marriage. One of the most notable headlines, Will There Be A Wedding? lines the top of the front page, along with a long string of columns holding articles on the matter.

“The Steambird is just eating this up.” You’re somewhat amused. You’ve, effectively, thrown the entirety of Fontaine into chaos. There’s a picture of you both at the tea party someone must’ve managed to snap just in time—Neuvillette’s lips upon your cheek, your expression perfectly surprised—displayed across the front page. You pick up the paper and begin reading the first few sentences of the article aloud, “For once, Fontaine has been graced with something much more exciting and shocking than the latest murder mystery resolved at the trials—the very man known for overseeing such hearings, Iudex Neuvillette, has recently announced his marriage to a young woman, Madame [Name].” It’s so ludicrous. Furina must be overjoyed.

You hear Neuvillette sigh from beside you, then the trickle of tea being poured sounds. “It gets better. The subtle slights thrown your way, in particular, are especially riveting.” Sarcasm drips from his tone. “I don’t recommend reading it. I’ve half a mind to send for them to halt publication of such an offensive article.”

“No need, I was prepared for this.” Society is fueled by vanity. Everyone likely expected Neuvillette, an unreachable, enigmatic figure with the face of an angel, to follow down a fairy-tale storyline. He would choose a woman equal to him in appearance, someone gorgeous and loveable, not someone who looks like every other person you pass by on the street. Not someone normal.

You’ve long grown a thick skin to scornful comments from those around you—commonly people you don’t even know, and who don’t know you—but it hurts a bit to be compared to the man next to you. So you opt to ask him what he thinks of your appearance.

“Well, Neuvillette, what is your opinion on me?” You brace yourself for the worst. But he’s too nice a person to give it to you straight. Perhaps his hesitance to confide in you of his true, maybe even superficial, views on you is a factor that could wound you deeply.

“Opinion?” He echoes, surprised. Neuvillette sets down his cup upon the saucer in his hand with a soft clink, mauve eyes rather bemused. “…Could you be a little more specific?” You have to choose your words carefully—you don’t want your deep-seated, pushed-down insecurities revealed, nor do you want to look like you’re fishing for compliments. For attention. You just want honesty, not flattery. “Erm…well, have you found that you would have rathered a more comely wife?” “I will be perfectly frank.” Neuvillette places his cup and saucer on the coffee table before you both, before leaning back and facing you fully. “I am not someone who goes for what’s on the outside. However, in this sense and our situation, I never had a choice anyway—not that that’s turned out to be a bad thing.” He, too, seems to be having trouble wording it right. “What I mean to say is, I like you. Your personality. And it’s very easy to look past all those superficial, facile ideals of beauty and appeal once you understand the heart of who you’re dealing with.”

Yeah, he should’ve been a poet. You want to tease him, but now is not the time. You also didn’t expect his words to comfort you so much. Beauty is a double-edged sword, and so is being average. Then it hits you—wait, could this be considered a…confession, of sorts?

“So, you’re saying…you don’t care about my appearance? Like how the entire country and Furina does?” “I never did. Why do you think I chose you? If I wanted a beautiful woman, I need only have taken my pick. I could send a letter to some nobleman with a particularly attractive young daughter and solved all his problems with marrying her off. But I didn’t. Although this situation is unromantic and unideal, that doesn’t mean I wanted it to be unrealistic.”

His words make you ponder. He had options, but he selected me. “…You could still say you had no choice, Neuvillette. The only reason I wound up here is because we danced and sent the ball rolling—a ball Furina herself put there, waiting for someone to kick.”

“Yes, you could. But you had a level head, could manage yourself under pressure, and you’re not the type to take much to heart. I needed someone rational, and it seemed like you were the only logical woman there.”

But it’s not like you were different from all the others. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, really. You give him a rather rueful smile. “You’ve misunderstood me once more, Neuvillette.”

“Sorry?” He almost flinches at your words. “Misunderstood you? How do you mean?” “I am not some sensation. We were both in sticky situations and we both appeared before each other in the nick of time. And I didn’t see you talking to any other woman apart from Clorinde that night. You didn’t try to seek someone out—it’s like you just hoped the right person would come along. And they did.” Neuvillette’s gaze drops, hurt flashing across his features. You feel pierced, like you just hurt yourself too, but you push that guilt down. This is not going how I intended it to. Miscommunication strikes again. And it’s the only thing you’re both capable of, because you have some silly little piece of paper to stick to and blurring lines to stay behind.

It’s frustrating, actually. You want to know more, but the contract says no. You’ve both come so close to breaking those rules you set for yourselves, only to pull away just in time. A chemistry you never asked for sputtered to life between you both, but it’s something to be adamantly—indefatigably—avoided. Why is it such torture?

Torment like no other. Ha. You’re talking as if you know what this is. But you don’t. And you won’t. All you know is that you can’t.

“I…” Neuvillette seems to be at a loss for words. “I’m not sure what to say.” “It’s alright.” You lean forward and pat his hand, which is curled into a tightly clenched fist. “You didn’t have a choice. This isn’t your fault.” But it will be your fault if this continues on and becomes something it shouldn’t. No matter how you strain to touch his face, you will be lost beneath the waves.

How did you get started modding npcs? I’d love to work on making the elderly people in Skyrim feel less identical but the creation kit is intimidating. Is there an easy way to dip into the modding scene or do you just have to crack things open and make mistakes? It’s hard to find guides that don’t focus on cbbe 😔

Sorry for the lateness of this, Tumblr won't let me edit drafts for asks on mobile, so I couldn't jot down my thoughts as I had them which is my usual method of answering stuff like this.

Oh man, my start was probably learning to edit the NPC from Tame the Beast 2 lol. She stood out like a sore thumb in my game. I found a tutorial that ended up becoming my method through the RS Children page.

It primarily focuses around using RaceMenu, which has a function that allows you to export the head you make directly from Character Creation. This allows you to use the extra facial sliders (like the ones from and overlays (like Freckle Mania 2, my beloved). So basically, it allows for potentially far more unique NPCs than editing via CK.

I am going to warn you, it definitely is not simpler than editing NPCs in the Creation Kit alone. Sorry.

Links are to the SE version of the mods, as that's what I'm most familiar with. They likely have LE counterparts. Sorry, I am not the greatest at writing tutorials.

Things you will need:

RaceMenu (and SKSE; be sure to get the correct versions of both for your game)

NifSkope - you will use this to open and edit the mesh. Here's GamerPoet's setup video

Things I recommend:

Creation Kit Platform Extended for Skyrim - makes using the Creation Kit way less like pulling teeth

Unofficial Creation Kit Patch - if you're using AE

an alternate start mod - I like Dimes Quickstart for its simplicity, but any would work

Another Race Menu Rotation Mod - handy for seeing how the back of hairs look

Stand still in RaceMenu (OAR) - stops the character from wiggling out of frame

For your quest to edit elders specifically, you will probably need a playable Elder Race mod (I have not tested any, but just searching for them yields plenty of options.) You will have to know exactly what races the NPCs you're editing are, though

Fun Stuff for diverse options:

Extra slider mods (I like Expressive FaceGen Morphs)

Skin Overlay Mods (for extra detailed faces)

If you want to get REAL funky with it, you can also use OutfitStudio to have a lot better time sculpting/getting super wild with assets, but that's too advanced for this tutorial (and my method is very 'goof around until it just works.'

I don't really want to cover using mod-added headparts (like eyes, hairs, etc.) There are basically two options there: add them as new headparts for your mod or make your mod dependent on the mod the headparts are from. The second way is probably simpler for beginners, but I definitely suggest installing Creation Kit Platform Extended, as it will allow you to load the other mods as masters without the Suffering™.

The Workflow

1. Design your character like you would a player character. For this example, I am redesigning Arcadia.

A recommendation: unless you really feel like you need to change it, it is typically better to make the Weight slider match the NPC's actual weight. You can see this value using either SSE Edit or the Creation Kit. It is no big deal if you don't, but if you change the weight and load the mod into an already existing save you will get a gap between the NPC's neck and body (unless you use Save Unbaker.) Be careful, though, there is a RaceMenu bug where if you load up RM again after exiting, it changes the weight by .01. So annoying.

For Skin Tone choice, if you do a custom skin tone (by pressing 'E' while hovering over the slider) I would recommend leaving the transparency slider (the 'A' value) at 100% (though I usually make the exception for Khajiit and Argonians.) This info will go into the Interpolation Value box in the CK, and the RM values can't be directly input, so you have to calculate the value with a (RM Number/255 = X/100, solve for X which is your Interpolation Value)

1a. If you are planning on adding faceparts from mods to your own plugin, I recommend saving and doing that now. Then come back to your save and change your headparts to the versions from your plugin. If you want to just have the other mods as masters, you can skip this.

2. Once you're satisfied with your design, I recommend saving your game and saving your head as a preset (click to enlarge):

3. Now, you will need to write down some stuff.

Skin Tone (RGB value):

Hover over Skin Tone slider. Press 'E'.

write down the R G B values (and A if you change it, see above note)

Even if you use a default skin tone, this is the best way to make sure you get the correct value for the CK.

Weight (number)

Scars (name) (if applicable)

Hair (name)

Facial Hair (name) (if applicable)

Eye Color (name)

Brow Type (name)

Writing down Hair Color is optional: with this method, the hair will inherit color from the head you export, not the CK value. Plus, RM's values are not really useful, because the default hair colors are named. It's the same with the Face Complexion (wrinkles, etc), with this method it is exported with the head mesh.

4. Export the Sculpt:

It should end up in your SKSE folder (SKSE\Plugins\CharGen), wherever that is for you

5. Now you can close down the game and open the Creation Kit.

Use the folder icon to load your masters.

Pick Skyrim, Update, any official DLC (if applicable), and any other mods you want to be masters for your mod (for eyes, hairs, etc.) If you've made your plugin already for headparts, just load it up.

6. In the Object Window, expand the Actors -> Actor -> Actor tabs and now you have a lot of tabs with Race names. Find the race your NPC belongs to then open the appropriate gender tab. Alternatively, you can just search the character's name in the searchbox.

7. Find your NPC's name and double click. This opens their Actor window, which is where you will use all the data you wrote down.

If you want a preview of their face, tick the box at the bottom of the window.

For weight adjustments: go to the Traits Tab. For all other values you need to worry about for this tutorial, go to the Character Gen Parts.

So, to parse this: you can ignore the Face Tint Layers box and pretty much everything on the left side of the screen.

Face Tinting Color

Type in your values for R G and B (you can ignore the Preset dropdown completely.) The Interpolation value corresponsed to the 'A' value, so unless you are working on Khajiit or Argonians, it will probably always be 1.

Base Head Parts

To change stuff in this section, click the line you want to change then go down to the dropbox below it and change it to what you want Face - unless you're using something like High Poly Heads, you can ignore this Everything else in this box: change to what you wrote down for each

Additional Head Parts

This is mainly used for scars and functions a little differently To add a scar, you need to go to the Object window again You can expand the Character tab and click 'HeadPart' then search the name of the scar you want. Click and drag the line with your scar into the Additional Head Parts box and it should show up there.

8. Once you've got the above like you want it, hit 'Ok', save your plugin. Now, to make the next step a little easier, you can click the NPC name in the Object Window again and hit f4.

This will export the meshes/textures file folders to wherever you have CK set up to export files (if you use MO2, it goes directly to the Overwrite folder by default.) Your plugin will be in the same place, (probably. Mine is bugged.)

Go ahead and exit the CK now

9. Go your your files exported from the last step. Open a second window from the files you exported from SKSE.

Open both meshes in two separate NifSkope windows.

You absolutely must make sure your headparts match the head you exported from RaceMenu exactly, or you will get the dreaded dark face bug.

If your SKSE head has a weird broken neck mesh, that's not a problem and can be ignored.

Now, you will need to find the Head textures in the head you exported from the CK. If your NifSkope is set up like mine, it should look like this:

Copy this line and paste it into the SKSE head in the same slot.

Save the SKSE NifSkope and close.

10. Rename the SKSE files (both .dds and .nif) to the number your exported heads are. You can then copy and paste your your SKSE files to their respective folders:

the .nif file goes in meshes/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceGeom/[name of plugin]

the .dds file goes into textures/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceTint/[name of plugin]

And now you're ready to pack up your mod for testing! At this point I also recommend taking a second and converting your plugin to an ESPFE via SSE Edit. It's pretty simple and there are probably tutorials out there.

Why I think Nocturne is way better than the OG Castlevania series

Sorry, when I try to shut up about this show I be like

so here’s my unsolicited, highly biased word vomit that will contain spoilers at the end (but those will be under a cut) so read at your own risk! Okay, leggo

It’s actually diverse.

One thing about high fantasy is that it’s almost always Eurocentric. Even if it’s not set in Europe, the characters are gonna inexplicably have British accents because we associate that with high fantasy. We’re gonna have European style “old” clothing choices. And if everyone isn’t white, they might as well be because they’ll only throw in a couple ambiguously brown side characters and call it a day. Or if they make a main character a POC then best believe everyone around them will be white.

Nocturne, tho? Oh, you can tell it’s made with more than just a sprinkle of representation. They didn’t just make Olrox indigenous, they tied his Aztec lineage in beautifully. Annette was a slave but it’s not flattening her character because of it. Drolta came to slay but even she has her authentic background. Which leads me to my next point!

The Black characters especially are done tastefully.

Like… don’t get me wrong. I love Isaac. He was the only reason I stayed tuned into Castlevania past season 1, LMAO! But his backstory felt like straight trauma porn cooked up by a non-Black person who wanted an excuse to see a Black man whipped for character development.

Zodwa Nyoni wrote some episodes for Nocturne and she put her FOOT in it. When it came to addressing Annette’s time as a slave, her connection to the Orisha through her bloodline… I was gobsmacked at how accurate everything was and now I know why LOL! Like, for me, it’s always gonna be hard to see slavery in fiction but I can’t say shit bad about how it was tied into everything in this show. Annette’s ancestors play such a huge part in her growth and it just warmed my heart to see a Black girl whoop some colonizer ass without it feeling hamfisted. 🥹

The token relationship is the cishet one, everyone else is gay asf

I love that trope flipped on it’s head, ngl LMAO! I, by default, HC everyone as bi anyway but MAN was it nice to see Olrox and Mizrak speedrun enemies to lovers and a hint of Drolta’s devotion/gayness to Erzsebet.

I know the majority of my fictional character thirsting leans male but don’t get it twisted; I jump for JOY for gay shit in media 😂 The only reason I don’t thirst as hard for female characters is because I prefer my men fictional but my women real.

That being said, this series sent me into bi panic and I’d like to be manhandled in a room by Drolta and Olrox.

Nocturne’s first season plays out neater than the OG’s first season.

Like… okay. My main beef with the OG series was that after they defeated Dracula, the rest of the show felt like a meandering fanfic. Sure, there were a few badass moments, but the energy kinda faltered for me and I was bored with a lot of it. I hope they don’t do the same with Nocturne; they left off at a nice cliffhanger which builds anticipation for the next season and… idk it feels more cohesive already? They coulda speedran kicking Erzsebet’s face in like the OG trio did to Dracula but I’m so glad they left us a lil something to look forward to.

Like damn for the past fifty-leven years he was in that castle by himself going “do I wanna talk to Sypha and Trevor plushies again or do I wanna make myself even more of a bad bitch?” Then he chose the latter, went to the salon, got his hair bleached platinum along with some sew in extensions for volume, beat his face with Fenty, and said “sorry Drolta but there can be only one vampire baddie on this earth and hunny I’m TAKIN IT”

He looks more like his video game design this way too, which I love! I hate that he took out Cuntress McSlay tho 😔 Drolta I will always love you!!

Mmkay. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to start a cult to Olrox real quick. Erzsebet ain’t the only god walking the earth and I feel he just needs good marketing!

Soldier, Poet, King - The Oh Hellos (Now this one is more the Performance Trio as a whole but still. Preston is the poet, obviously 😌 while Nerris is the soldier and Harrison is the ruler.)

I/Me/Myself - Will Wood (Because he's just so ✨gender✨ Plus if you headcanon him as gender-fluid it makes this even better.)

Oh No! - Marina & The Diamonds (A desire to succeed. To make it big in this world. He knows what he wants and he won’t stop at nothing to get it. He definitely has a fear of failure. And who’s to say he doesn’t feel like he’s the worst? He already acts like he’s the best. Who’s to say that’s not a cover up?)

Everybody Loves Me - OneRepublic (Consider this the beginning of Preston Goodplay’s Good Play. He finally has a performance piece that people seem to like. He’s finally getting the love and attention he so deserves 😌 But at what cost?)

Non-Stop - Hamilton (Turns out his new performance is the only thing people seem to want. So why not just keep writing up new ideas for it? Sure he’ll eventually run out. But right now’s not eventually! He’ll just have to keep coming up with new ideas for it! Thing is it’s getting a lot more stressful than he intended.)

Left Brain, Right Brain - Bo Burnham (Oh Y’know just that one scene where he’s arguing with his own fucking reflection. Unsure whether he should sell out and give the people what they want, or follow what he wants with the risk that no one would like it.)

Show & Tell - Melanie Martínez (Ok this is getting ridiculous. They’ve started showing up to his practices and commenting on HIS writing process. It’s overwhelming. But what can he do about it? They’re his target audience. Well his only audience but still-)

Everyone is Dumb - Mazie x Everybody Likes You - Lemon Demon (Seems self explanatory. Everyone actually pays attention to him now. They’re excited for his performances. Everyone likes him. But they’re also stupid. It’s a stupidly simple performance that’s virtually the same every time. Yet they never get tired of it. Yes they like him, but is it worth it if this is the reason they like him.)

Shine A Light (Reprise) - Heathers (Oh y’know just the silly little nightmare he has :,D And then the hallucinations of his own reflection laughing at him. Plus him pulling out that prop knife uh- was he just being dramatic or??? Like he did have a bit of a psychotic break, man’s was hallucinating. How do we know he didn’t think the knife was real? Like was he actually trying to- y’know? Seriously is he ok-??)

Are You Satisfied - Marina & The Diamonds (He talks to David for a bit. And something’s called to question. Is he satisfied with this? He’s worried about his future yes, but then again what’s the point of making art if he doesn’t actually like it himself. It’s pointless. And he realizes no one else should get a say in what he wants to create. It’s his problem. No one else’s.)

Drama Club - Melanie Martinez (Honestly just doesn’t give a shit about anyone’s opinions anymore and that’s kind of a good thing. Even if they hate it. “Any reaction, positive or negative, is still a reaction :D” As tomatoes are pelted towards him. Honestly a healthier mentality than he had before. And I think that’s the end of the Preston Goodplay’s Good Play section of the playlist!)

Recess - Melanie Martinez (I’m here for Preston’s grandmother raising him and teaching him everything she knows 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Stg every lyric fucking fits. Also I think this could apply to his new mentality of “Fuck you it’s my art not yours I do what I want.” A nice little summary to the fiasco that is Preston Goodplay’s Good play.)

Mirror Man - Jack Stauber’s Opal (Mostly just gives me Preston vibes. His desire to become famous and what not.)

Art Is Dead - Bo Burnham (Vibesss man. “I am an artist, please god forgive me. I am an artist, please don't revere me. I am an artist, please don't respect me I am an artist, you're free to correct me. A self-centered artist. Self-obsessed artist. I am an artist. I am an artist. But I'm just a kid. I'm just a kid. Finale (Can’t Wait To See What You Do Next) - AJR (Honestly just thought it’d be cool to have the last song in the playlist be called Finale 💀 But I think it’s a nice little summary of his character. A final bow if you will 😌)

things i think should (should’ve?) happen in DL before it dies (if it’s not already dead??)

carla, shin, & kino character songs. i know kino already has imitation game, dystopia, & count off, but i don’t count them! carla & shin also deserve their own songs & not just solo versions of operation x

a song with all 13 diaboys. that sounds so chaotic & so fun 😭 that should’ve been for the 10th anniversary honestly

bats can purr. i would love if they gave us at least one fluffy scenario with our boys where it happens 😔🙏 i’m also talking about all 13 boys doing this btw don’t think i’d leave your boy out of this. it would be so catboy of kou to purr dude cmon let him be the bat-catboy he is, rejet! & the tsukinami’s could totally purr! even if they aren’t technically vampires, they can turn into bats, right? like how shin turns into a wolf. so they’ve got that dna in them! but also consistency hardly matters to rejet. so yeah i think this could work. also i think it’d be cute to hear each boy purr, no matter how jarring it might be coming from some.

it will always be weird to me that they didn’t make versus songs of the rivals. like kanato & azusa. like cmon you had yuki kaji & daisuke kishio in the studio for that versus cd drama & didn’t use their godly voices for a song together??? i really don’t understand why they haven’t made sakamaki mukami duet songs by now. the only thing close is bad howling where kou replaced subaru..

also isn’t it strange how the mukami’s didn’t get any more solo songs?? each sakamaki got 3 character songs per boy (if you don’t count the ending songs sung by ayato), the mukami’s only got one each. although neither of the tsukinami’s got real character solo’s so it could be worse 💀

animating some of the tokuten cd dramas. this is also something they could’ve done for the 10th anniversary. although, i’m not really that hung up over this. it’s just something that’d be cool. animation is expensive. plus DL getting another anime, especially one so different from the original, would be even stranger for the anime only’s to see.

a little self indulgent but i really want a cd drama line where the boys are in our role.. like i wanna see them be the M’s for once. (aside from u azusa, you already give us both <3 but i would love to see more of it so-) i would also honestly love if we were the vampire this time. pls tell me i’m not the only one who’s really interested in that concept. just once at least? please rejet hear my pleas (though idk how they’d be able to do it now..)

if we had to get another game, i personally want it should be like VC or LP. some of my favorite routes come from those games, & i think kino lovers deserve to have a route like that with their boy.

man.. wouldn’t it have been funny if some of these things were gonna happen before the cheating scandals with tatsuhisa suzuki & takahiro sakurai 💀 i really wonder what the new drama cd & those character songs announced in house of vampire were gonna be like…….. will we ever find out…? rejet..?

𝐑𝐏 𝐏𝐄𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐒?: when someone brings in another character to harass their character in the middle of a conversation to make their character look stronger, especially if it’s just an anon role play and we aren’t friends. I think that’s just a me thing though.

𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 / 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗬 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦?: only really seriously the last two years (online) I tried online rp when I was younger and it didn’t go well so I just… didn’t for a few years. However I’ve been a writer basically since I could write. Language is beautiful man.

𝗙𝗟𝗨𝗙𝗙, 𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗦𝗧, 𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗠𝗨𝗧?: probably angst? I enjoy fluff but if my guy isn’t freaking out internally during the fluff it’s just not right 😔 I just seriously love angst. Dead dove is my favorite.

𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗦?: it really depends. I feel like Husk is definitely a “get straight to it” character so he uses fewer words. But when I’m doing longer plots with people I enjoy writing his body language, everything he is doing, inner thoughts ect ect.

𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗦?: PLOT PLOT PLOT!!!! I absolutely LOVE plotting *rubs hands together evilly* I just tend to get overwhelmed when I have more than one going on at a time. And after I finish up the double date plot (wherever that goes 🤭) I’d love to plot some newer stuff too hehe. I absolutely ADORE the date thing going on right now and how it just feels connected to everything that’s been going happening on my blog. I enjoy the memes as something to hold over until I either start a new plot or finish the current one. Cuz my fellow role players are people and need time 🫰 I also need time sometimes too…

𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗘?: ehhhhh see it really depends. Most of the time I am in writers mode but when writers block hits. IT HITS. I’ll try to answer to try and push through, but it doesn’t feel in character and I give up. So a few days give or take

This is just a fun post of me ranking the fandom given nicknames for the obey me boys! If I missed any let me know and I can add them or do this again depending on how many! Honestly I just don’t vibe with it? Idk it’s not terrible or anything but I’ve seen better.

Again I know Lucifer isn’t the easiest to give nicknames to but I’m like, again it feels insulting almost given how feminine the name sounds but at the same time it’s such an easy name to whine if you wanted him to give in that sounds so sexual sorry😭 like I could see you trying to get him away from work and just “Luci pleaseeee” and that’s like the only time he appreciates it

There’s just better out there yk this is the kinda nickname you use when you want something and the other person is like “shit what do they want now”

It’s only ok because it’s him saying it out loud feels awkward tho like “barb” and then an actual person responds idk but it’s ok because it’s butler man

I’m sorry but it’s hard for anything to beat the number 3 spot… anywho I think Levi is a good nickname but side note I had such a hard to trying to figure out how to pronounce it caus it it like the Levi in Leviathan than or is it more like “Levie” idk maybe that’s the same thing and I’m going coocoo

YESYESYES look it’s so good cause Angel is just a general pet name but yk he’s an ACTUAL Angel so it’s just yk.. o.o ok also it’s super cute and I feel like he’d get flustered cause he’s been called “an Angel” but it’s just diffrent yk ok yea I think you get it

It’s cutie patootie of him and it’s giving he wanted a nickname so bad that he decided to make it work and he couldn’t be happier whenever you say it so I love him and he loves the name we’re all happy

Ok it’s basic I know but it’s cute. Like he’s such a Belphie yk? I’d expect literally nothing else but for Belphie to act like a Belphie and we’ll he does!

ITS. SO. CUTE. Am I biased because Beel is my fav? Uhm maybe maybe not… But Bub is such a cute nickname for literally anyone but for him it hits ten times harder since it’s part of his name. Bub or Bub’s just feels like such a soft name and given how powerful and even aggressive his name naturally sounds giving it a more tender sound is AHHHH it’s so good.

hey I'm just loving the story so so much and that scene with Yvette was *chefs kiss*...sorry this will probably be a long rant its just the things you've made me feel 😩😔...if I could read the entire story right now I'd sell a kidney 😂

I'm hoping we can have more conversations with Yvette like we did to really dive into her character, thoughts and feelings especially towards our MC...I usually have a hard time with her character because it always seems like she doesn't really regret what she did as much and seems more like she's approached MC and doing what she's doing mostly, if not solely, because she feels cornered and not as someone that also regrets their decisions and wishes to repair the relationship they DONT have with their child...I know she can feel both those and they can be her motivations, but it just feels like she's driven by the former and not the latter..so I'm looking forward to our interactions with her and if there will be options to let MCs frustrations, sadness, anger and longing bare before her I will...I'd be open to making amends but she has to know and feel everything her absence put MC through and my MC needs to see her genuinely, proactively and consistently care for them before they consider thinking of them as their mother again, nobody can top papa Vic 😂 he set the damn bar too high but if she can put half as much effort hey then we're getting somewhere...

And i have to say, your characters as well are so well written and realistic and raw that I get so engrossed in every little thing they do and I can't help but feel that they're real people with real scars, issues, hopes, dreams, problems and aspirations and relate with them...because I understand Yvettes thought process its like 'I've come too far to look back now' and she feels like she can't let go of everything she built because it would sort of make all her sacrifices meaningless or she may feel she doesn't deserve too and I think she did mention something like that but I wonder if she knows that hurts my MC more 😭😭

Anyway for an ask i wondering what Yvettes fears and or regrets are 'if they're not spoiler' are towards MC and the relationship between the both of them especially because Yvette is asking them to hunt the man that killed her former lover and father of her child 😅...especially if its a vengeful 'I WILL STOP YOU EVEN IF IT KILLS ME' MC...do they fear losing MC like they did Victor or has that not crossed their mind

Sorry it got pretty long but before i vanish I just want to encourage you and say you're awesome and stay blessed!!! its probably not easy making your content and living your life irl but you do it anyways and for that we are more than grateful 🙏

So, about Yvette, yes, MC will have an optional chance to do a little hang out session with Yvette in the future where they’ll be able to have another conversation with her ☺️

Also, I love how readers interpret the talk with Yvette a little bit differently from each other. Some readily accept her apology and see it as sincere regret, while some, like you, are more skeptical and don’t readily forgive her right away.

Right now, I planned to let those that don’t forgive her the first time to change their mind in the future if they want to. It’s not 100% guaranteed as all plans are subjects to change constantly , but I’d really love to include that.

As for your question, I’m actually not really sure what Yvette’s fears are in the context of her relationship with MC other than messing up her second chance if MC decides to forgive her and MC dying 🥺 She doesn’t really fear MC hating her per se, because it is what she has been believing and expected all these years.

And yes, the thought of losing MC has crossed her mind before, and you can actually see that in the Luka and Yvette Funeral Talk Side Story in case you haven’t checked it out. She would be devastated if MC died, she doesn’t want that. When she came to ask for MC’s help, she just expected MC to talk with Luka or Grandpa and basically just be on standby to help with sharing information about the underworld that’s needed and connecting the group to the Morozovs’ resources and connections, instead of MC actively participating and hunting down the killer 😔

Anyways thinking about Katsuki with a little girl and how he cannot say no bc his little girl is a daddies girl 😔 she wants daddy to do her hair and he will do it with no complaints whatsoever bc whatever his little girls wants, his little girl gets, however he is also a pretty good father, bc i like to think he's much closer to his dad than his mother, bc his dad is so mellow but only gets nervy when his milf of a wife is like she hulk, and Katsuki listens to his advice and understands that no dad is the same, and no dad is perfect and Katsuki has a lot of trouble accepting that he won't be the perfect dad bc he wants his little girl to see him as this great man, but he understands that she might, but with a little flaws

So when she comes to him with her first heartbreak, he immediately goes into anger mode but then remembers how he couldn't go to his parents with that issue, and immediately calls you for help because he has no idea how to help

It's a learning experience for everyone, and no doubt his little girl listens and learns too because in every photo they have together, he smiles, because he didn't with his parents and he'll be damned if he makes his little girl suffer or cry.

One time he did and tried his best to fix ot by giving her his black card,,,,,,, and it was maxed out an HOUR LATER

but if anything Katsuki is so grateful to have you by his side because he wouldve been dubbed worst dad ever if it weren't for your help, and if anything it makes his love for you grow

literallyyy yes like if katsuki ever had a daughter she’d definitely be a daddy’s girl. like he’d just spoil her rotten and have a hard time saying no so that would leave you to do the discipline. and I also feel like the older he gets the more willing he is to ask for help. like when he was younger he used to think it was almost taboo to ask someone for assistance, but now he asks you for help everydayyy when it comes to his daughter.

and I’d pray she never gets upset with him because he’d just be devastated. kinda piggy backing on your daughter heartbreak thingy, let’s say she were to get a bf and katsuki find out right. and yk he’s all in ‘protective dad mode’ bc nobody can treat his little girl right in his eyes. so he does the cliché and scares off her little bf right. so his daughter finds out and is just lividdddd, I mean smoke coming out the ears type pissed.

“no fucking way you just did that shit dad.”

“hey, watch your fuckin’ mouth.” he barks, crossing his beefy arms over his chest. he didn’t rlly understand why she was upset in the first place. the boy was just some little punk katsuki scared off, and now he’s getting lip for it?

“dad, I’m at an age where I’m going to start bringing guys home that I like.”

“not in this house sweetheart.”

“and in what other house would I being doing it in?”

“I don’t fuckin’ know, but not this one.”

and she gets all huffy like he usually does and just decides to stomp off before she says something that might get her in real trouble, “whatever.”

and he’s just all wide eyed and confused like he doesn’t know wtf he did wrong ??? doesn’t quite understand that his little sweetheart could even catch an attitude with him, but there’s a first for everything !

you were listening to the whole thing tho and you’re just standing there kinda shaking your head at his obliviousness. he stalks over to you with doe eyes and is all like, “what the fuck just happened?”

“she’s pissed at you kats.”

“yeah but I don’t fuckin’ know why? i ain’t do shit wrong.”

“well then, figure it out.” and you just leave him there all awe struck, going to find your daughter to comfort her.

eventually he gets it after overhearing yalls conversation and grows enough balls to apologize. he realizes that his little girl is going to have other people in her life, other people that make her happy. and though it’s going to take him some time to get used to, he’s as on board with it as he can be!

Hi! I love CFLDF so much! I have so many theories about where the characters are going and what their past is, I feel like I'm trying to piece together a mystery book. It's similar and different enough to canon that I can guess the major plot points and still be blown away! I really like the way you weave the characters and their relationships and how you make them feel like real people. Special highlights for me are Senjuro my favorite anxious mess, Nezuko my queen, and the rest of the thunder fam; Kaigaku (world's worst older brother), Zenitsu (he should have been at the club), Jigoro (crazy old man), and the honorable member Tanjiro (world's best older brother).

I'm also trying to write a role swap kny fic and I was wondering if you had some advice? If it isn't asking too much! I've had half finished versions of a first chapter sitting in my docs for months because I can't decide what direction to take the story 😔

I keep swinging back and forth between thunder breath! Nezuko (probably found by Mitsuri the stone pillar before she was sent to Kaigaku) (where Zenitsu fits in this au depends, sometimes he is a demon and others he is the world's equivalent of the butterfly girls) and moon breath! Nezuko (ft. Koku being the Tamayo of the world and teaching Nezuko); and I also alternate between having Tanjiro stick around like canon Nezuko or having the DK take him and Tanjiro forgetting all about his human life and Nezuko's mission being more about revenge before the grand reveal. And also, just for example, I can't decide if I want to have a Shinobu-Tomioka swap (Shinobu has a lot of dead relatives 🫤 and Giyuu is the medic always pretending he is not filled with untamable hatred) (Aoi is his tsuguko and Sabito is the dead brother lover), or a Doma-Shinobu swap or the flower sisters as the spider family. Or a Doma raises Inosuke and Kanao but they're still human and they infiltrate the corps for him sub plotline in between everything. Or, every member of the Kamaboko is working for the DK as demons and Nezuko's gang is just a bunch of minor (probably demon characters) and everything plays out fairly similar. Or a Shinazugawa and Rengoku brothers swap based on my mom's (an anime only) theory that the Shinazugawa brothers were experiments and that was why Sanemi was all scarred and Genya could eat demons.

Some of this can coexist but a good chunk of them can't and I'm not settling for anything. Like there's so many possibilities, and I was wondering if you had some advice on how to settle on something?

That’s awesome to hear that you’re writing your own role-swap! And I’d love to offer some advice. Feel free to take/use whatever you feel will help you best or ignore what you think you don’t need.

(Also I’m not an expert on writing this, so please, for anyone reading this, use what you’d like and know this is just my opinion on writing AUs for KNY.)

So, the first thing you should work out when planning a role-swap is WHAT KIND of role-swap you want to do. Based on what I’ve read, there are probably five different ways people have done Protagonist Nezuko Role-Swaps:

The Classic Swap - Tanjiro and Nezuko swap roles, but everything in canon (story and character-wise) remains the same

The Mentor Swap - Tanjiro and Nezuko swap roles, and a different Hashira/Demon Slayer takes them in (typically resulting in Nezuko learning a different breathing style); everything else in canon (story and character-wise) remains the same

The Hashira - Upper Moon Swap / The Human - Demon Swap - All members of the Hashira/Demon Slayer become Kizuki Demons and the Upper Moons/Kizuki become Hashira/Demon Slayer; can also be expanded into all humans being demons and vice versa too

The Character/Role-Swap - A specific character has their backstory (and at times, personality) swapped with that of another character (Ex: Rengoku - Shinazugawa, or Tomioka - Sabito)

The Customized Swap - May use a combination of some or all of the above swaps, or just take the story in a different direction (Ex: Tanjiro and Nezuko being separated for a majority of the story, or simply giving characters a new role without giving them a clear/strict “swap”)

Once you decide which one to do, I suggest “working from the inside out” when planning the rest of your Swap AU. This is more for the last three swaps but can be used for the others depending on how much you change.

Start with the characters you KNOW you want to swap (whether it be members of the Kamaboko Squad, the demon “defecting” from the Demon King, or the Hashira). Once you have those figured out, you can start filling in the blanks. It might take a little time to come up with, but whenever you have a thought, write it down and play around with the idea for a bit to see if it will fit with the story you are writing.

If it’s easier to start with the Kamaboko Squad, get everything you want figured out with them first. If it’s the hashira, have your line-up and see what details you can give them in the moment. If it’s the Demon King, come up with a basic idea for his/her appearance, personality, and motives. Start with what you know, and then move on from there.

Once you’ve figured out most of your characters, then look into how you’re going to develop the story. Will you be following the canon events exactly as they happened in the manga/anime? Will some events be rearranged? Added/Removed?

I recommend creating a rough (and I cannot express this enough, ROUGH) timeline of how your story’s main events will unfold, and then walking your characters through them. See if it makes sense, and take note if you find areas where you might need to revise things or add another scene.

And as a final piece of advice, read a few role-swaps and see what you like. I know before I even started writing the first chapter of this story, I read through a lot and found a few favorites that gave me inspiration for concepts such as potential swaps, different ways to explore characters/events/themes, and how to handle changing what’s canon without taking away what made it good in the first place. Have fun with your research, and you’ll slowly start to see things come together!

(Manga Spoilers Ahead)

Now, to address some of the ideas you have…

I'd go with whatever breath-style you feel most confident writing Nezuko in. I know writing her as a thunder breather can be a bit tricky since we only see Zenitsu perform the first form in canon and Kaigaku’s version of the other forms are influenced by his blood demon art, I do think it’s one of the best breathing styles to play to her strengths. But I’ve never read a story with her as a moon breather, and that could definitely open a lot of segways into different storytellings (especially if you decide to go the Human - Demon swap route). Plus, having Kokushibo in a different role other than Upper Moon One or a Hashira could be a fun storyline to explore that would definitely catch some attention.

This is also a very interesting idea that could really set the story apart. Kind of like what I said above, I’d say go with what you’re most confident writing. Having Tanjiro stick with Nezuko is one way of keeping the story close to canon, and I think there’s a lot of popularity/meaning in having their strong sibling bond emphasized as they navigate the world of demons together. But having Tanjiro separated from Nezuko makes a lot of sense as well, considering their heritage and how the DK (if they are different from Muzan) may want to take advantage of a descendant of sun-breathing being a demon. That would probably change the story a lot, but if you have a plan for how you will navigate the split POVs and how their characters will be affected by the separation and development of their ideals, then I think that would be a fun route to go and lead to a lot of awesome content.

I can definitely see Tomioka and Shinobu swapping. I’d be curious to know how much of their personalities would change as a result (such as Shinobu being more open with her feisty attitude or being more subdued like canon Tomioka, and then Tomioka being like you said having some hidden anger).

I think any of the Doma swaps would be fantastic ideas to implement. Especially the one with Kanao and Inosuke being spies infiltrating the Corps! I don’t think I’ve heard of anything like that before, and given the amount of development that could bring about, and how much of a twist/shock that would be for their “allies” with their reveal, that would be such a great plotline to include.

I’d love to see more of the minor demons that were killed off early in the series get bigger roles! I think it boils down to what I mentioned in the first part of the post, and deciding what the exact parameters of your story’s swaps will be. If you do go this route, I’d be excited to see what other backstories the other demons/humans will get.

I think switching the Rengoku and Shinazugawa brothers would definitely be a cool idea! Especially given how they share a lot of similarities, like how the older brothers would do anything to give their younger siblings a better, happy life. And that’s actually a really interesting theory your mom came up with! I think that would be such a cool idea for an alternative backstory for Sanemi and Genya, given how unique their abilities and conditions are (Sanemi having incredibly strong marechi blood and Genya being able to eat demons and gain some of their strength).

Ultimately, have fun with it. If you’re having trouble deciding, try and write out rough story outlines for your ideas and characters and see what works best. Or, just pick the one you’re most excited about. After all, it’s your story, and as I’ve found, if you’re really passionate and excited about a certain idea or swap, the planning and writing comes so much easier.
