Star Sister Flying Ointment Ritual

First of all, Flying Ointment is a salve or balm made with psychotopic herbs, supposedly used to give witches flight so they could go to their Sabbats. In modern times, Flying Ointment is often made of non-toxic herbs. There are a few reputable sources for authentic flying ointment on the internet, Sarah Anne Lawless being one of them, however you should read all precautions and use authentic Flying Ointments at your own risk.

Flying Ointment Ritual

The first part is an Intention Setting Ritual, in which you make your intentions known to Star Sister, the Spirit of Night and Magic and Dreams. This part of the overall Ritual should be done outside, or in a well ventilated area with proper fire precautions taken.

Note: if you only have one of the three crystals listed below, that is fine. just say the part associated with that crystal. they will all protect you, they will all lend their energy to your journey.

Items Needed

1 Black Candle and a lighter or matches

Quartz, snowflake obsidian, and/or black tourmaline

piece of paper large enough to write your intentions on, and a pen/pencil

fireproof container

cleansing spray, smoke cleansing bundle, or incense

If your path includes a circle casting, perform it now. If not, sit down in front of your working altar with the black candle placed in the center, the three stones placed in between you and the candle, and the fire proof container between you and the stones.

Light the candle and take three deep breaths. Continue breathing normally until you feel a calmness in your mind and body. Say:

Star Sister, I ask that you please join me in my ritual tonight, aid me in my flight, and guide me to where I need to be.

When you feel ready, take up the quartz crystal and hold it between you hands. Say:

Please help me to be clear of mind and purposeful in my actions during tonight’s journey.

Replace the quartz and pick up the snowflake obsidian, holding it between your palms. Say:

Please help me to be balanced and to surrender to my flight, to allow my spirit to seek the answers to our questions.

Replace the snowflake obsidian and pick up the black tourmaline, holding it between your palms. Say:

Please protect me during my flight and help to shield me from any spirits that wish to harm me.

Place the stone down and take up the paper and pen/pencil. Begin writing exactly what you intend to do during your flight. Make it detailed, use complete sentences. Take as much time and space as needed to write your intentions. Read over the paper as many times as you need in order to focus on your intentions.

When you are ready, use the candle flame to light the paper and place it in the fireproof container. Make sure that it burns thoroughly, relighting the paper as needed. Dispose of the ashes outside, under the stars.

If you cast a circle, close it as required by your path. Otherwise, clean your space and take the crystals to your resting place. Have them as close to the top of your head as possible, without risking them moving or getting lost.

Cleans your resting place as your path dictates, then sit and apply the Flying Ointment to your pulse points and your Third Eye, between your eyebrows. Lay back, close your eyes, and count your breaths to twelve (12), visualising the numbers and putting your mind into a light meditative state.

At this point, you should feel something akin to being out of phase with your phsyical body. Let it happen, don’t fight it. You may take flight, or you may sink into the earth below you, you may step to the side - your experience will vary. From here, you will begin your journey - the gateway you come to will be determined by you and your path, but once you cross the threshold you must see the journey through to the end.

If your physical body falls asleep, that is perfectly fine. Some of us cannot journey any other way.

Star Sister

From my Personal Pantheon.

Star Sister is the Spirit of the Night Sky. She aids us with spirit communication and workings, as well as with Dreams, Divination, Shadow Work, Necromancy, Witchcraft, Magic, and Underworld Journeys. Her energies are most commonly felt when Grandmother Moon rests, when the nights are darkest, and during the Dark Moon. She also assists He Who Ferries the Dead with bringing souls cross the Milky Way to the Otherworld.

Associations

Time: after the moon sets and the sky is dark, and during the Dark Moon, Winter

Crystals: quartz, snowflake obsidian, hematite, black tourmaline

Colours: black, silver, deep + dark blue

Plants/Herbs: sage, lavender, pine, cypress, belladonna (toxic), oleander (toxic), henbane (toxic), mugwort, aconite (toxic), hemlock (toxic), datura (toxic)

Animals: owls, black felines, fireflies, bats, moths

Workings: communication and working with spirits, honouring ancestors, shadow work, underworld journeys, releasing and removing, banishing, curses and hexes, divination, making wishes on stars.

Honouring Star Sister

Ritual Offerings - rice, lavender, sage, pine needles and bark, or cypress foliage. Fresh, incense, or oils for an oil burner are all good. If you choose to offer toxic flora, please do your research and handle appropriately - DO NOT INGEST.

Share Drink - make a cup of tea, or coffee, or hot chocolate (or whatever you want) and make one for Star Sister; sit outside, or near a window, and share a drink with Her.

Share Food - rice, pomegranates, blackberries, apples, honey milk, dates, black olives

Prayer - praying to any deity, communicating with them, is a way of honouring them.

Work with Her - just like prayer, working with a deity can be a way of honouring them.

Learn about Her - looking up at the stars, learning about the stars and constellations, watching space documentaries

Name a Star - do one of those star naming things

Ask Her - honouring any deity is a very personal experience. Talk with Star Sister and see what different ways she would like you to honour her.

Read Poetry - find poetry about the stars are the night or the dark. Here is an example:

She walks in beauty, like the night  Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright  Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light  Which heaven to gaudy day denies. Things to do during Her Time

Make Star water - just as you would make Moon water, set water out on the Dark Moon to be charged with the light of the stars.

Shadow Work - as she is the Spirit of Shadow Work, this is an excellent time to do it.

Underworld Journeys - travel to the Underworld, or Lower World, and do necessary work there or explore and get to know the surroundings.

Release/Remove Things - this is the perfect time to release/remove bad habits, toxic relationships, things that no longer serve you.

Curses/Hexes/Banishings - if you do any of these things, Star Sister’s time is the perfect time to do it, as these are often considered Dark Workings.

Write Poetry - Star Sister loves poetry, so sit under the stars or beside a window and write the lines that come to mind.

Rituals for Spirit Communication/Workings - Her time is one of the best times to do these workings, because it is the time that she helps He Who Ferries the Dead bring the spirits across the Milky Way to the Otherworld.

Divination - scrying with a Black Mirror is her preferred form of divination; also, the making of a Black Mirror is best done during Her time.

Make a Wish - you remember Star Light, Star Bright from your childhood? Make a small, simple ritual out of making a wish on a Star.

Dream Work - spells and rituals for dreams and dream messages are best done during Her time.

Magic - magic of all sorts is within Her realm of influence
