Day 47/100: The 'Doubt Point Pattern'. The doubt point lent itself to being a fun #punctuationpattern with its zigzag nature reminiscent of lightening. Can lightening strike twice? Day 23/100: The Umlaut. Nominally two dots above specific vowels in German, the word "umlaut" comes from one of the Brothers Grimm... Jacob Grimm was not only a collector of fairy tales (along with his brother Wilhelm), but also one of the most famous linguists ever. In 1819 he described a sound-change process that affected the historical development of German. He called it umlaut from um (around) + laut (sound). Technically, "umlaut" doesn't refer to the dots, but to the process where, historically, a vowel got pulled into a different position because of influence from another, upcoming vowel. Quite a lot going on for two tiny dots! Day 84/100: The Bullet Point. In typography, a bullet ( • ) is a typographical symbol or glyph used to introduce items in a list. The bullet symbol may take any of a variety of shapes, such as circular, square, diamond or arrow. Typical word processor software offers a wide selection of shapes and colors. When writing by hand, bullets may be drawn in any style & are usually used to highlight list elements. Day 100/100: The Full Stop (it had to be, right?!) In punctuation, the full stop (British, Australian, Irish and New Zealand English) or period (Canadian and American English) is a punctuation mark placed at the end of a sentence. The stop glyph is sometimes called a baseline dot because, typographically, it is a dot on the baseline. This term distinguishes the baseline dot from the interpunct (a raised dot). The full stop glyph is also used for other purposes. It is often placed after an initial letter used to stand for a name, and sometimes placed after each individual letter in an initialism (for example, "U.S.A."). It also has multiple contexts in mathematics and computing, where it may be called dot or point (short for decimal point). The full stop symbol derives from the Greek punctuation introduced by Aristophanes of Byzantium in the 3rd century bc. In his system, there were a series of dots whose placement determined their meaning. The full stop at the end of a completed thought or expression was marked by a high dot ⟨˙⟩ or "terminal dot". The "middle dot" ⟨·⟩ marked a division in a thought occasioning a longer breath (essentially a semicolon) and the low dot ⟨.⟩ or "underdot", marked a division in a thought occasioning a shorter breath (essentially a comma). In practice, scribes mostly employed the terminal dot; the others fell out of use and were later replaced by other symbols. From the 9th century, the full stop began appearing as a low mark instead of a high one; by the advent of printing in Western Europe, the low mark was regular & then universal. Day 90/100: The Multiplication Symbol (×). Arithmetic: the symbol (⋅), (×), or (∗) between two mathematical expressions denotes multiplication of the second expression by the first. In mathematics, the symbol × has a number of uses, including: • Multiplication of two scalar numbers, where it is read as "times" or "multiplied by" • Cross product of two vectors, where it is usually read as "cross" • Cartesian product of two sets, where it is usually read as "cross" • Geometric dimension of an object, such as noting that a room is 10 feet × 12 feet in area • Dimensions of a matrix, where it is usually read as "by" In biology, the multiplication sign is used in a botanical hybrid name (botany), for instance Ceanothus papillosus × impressus (a hybrid between C. papillosus and C. impressus). Day 85/100: 'Noughts & Crosses' Time for another #punctuationpattern using motifs from previous days. Day 72/100: The Israeli Shekel. The official currency of Israel, the origin of the name "shekel" is from the ancient biblical currency by the same name. Shekel is any of several ancient units of weight or of currency in ancient Israel. Initially, it may have referred to a weight of barley. In ancient Israel, the shekel was known to be about 180 grains (11 grams or .35 troy ounces). The symbol is a combination of the first Hebrew letters of the words shekel and ẖadash. Day 70/100: The Macron. Strictly speaking it's a diacritical mark: a straight bar (¯) placed above a letter, usually a vowel. But trust me to subvert the norm! Its name derives from Greek (makrón), meaning 'long', since it was originally used to mark long or heavy syllables in Greco-Roman metrics. Nowadays it more often marks a long vowel. In the International Phonetic Alphabet, the macron is used to indicate a mid-tone; the sign for a long vowel is instead a modified triangular colon ⟨ː⟩ [Magazine typography + paper cut out] #100daysofthepunctuationproject #100days #the100dayproject #gm100dayproject #punctuation #diacritics #diacriticalmarks #typography #letters #macron #makron #themacron #greek #pronunciation #papercutouts #syllables #language #punctuationproject #punctuationsymbols

Day 64/100: The Crossed D/Dyet. Known as crossed D or dyet, the-D-with-the-line-through-it that I can't recreate here, is a letter formed from the base character D/d overlaid with a crossbar. Crossing was used to create eth (ð), but eth has an uncial as its base whereas đ is based on the straight-backed roman d. Crossed d is a letter in the alphabets of several languages and is used in linguistics as a phonetic symbol. Day 63/100: Ampersand Pattern. I couldn't resist using the ampersand again, in a quick repeating pattern and with a colour change. Day 61/100: Square Brackets. Square brackets are used to modify another person's words to make it clear that a modification has been made, not by the original speaker, in order to clarify the situation. Sometimes they're used around a quote that contains the word "it" to clarify the antecedent. This is done for a number of reasons, but most frequently because when a writer uses a quote in a paper, the reader is encountering the quote out of its original context and since readers rely on context to determine the antecedent, the antecedent needs to be provided. Square brackets are also used to enclose the Latin word sic, which means "so, thus." In academic writing, [sic] is used to denote an error that originally appears in the source material and is not attributable to the author who is using the quote. Square brackets can also be nested (using square brackets [like these] inside round brackets). Day 20/100: (Round Brackets.) I use these a lot when I'm blogging, but try not to overuse them - if I use them at all - in fiction writing. Brackets (parentheses) are used within a sentence to include information that is not essential to the main point, meaning that if it were removed, the sentence would remain unchanged. Clever huh? Day 17/100: The 'commercial at' symbol that was a bit unloved prior to email. Now it's in constant use everyday around the world, and in languages other than English it has some pretty cool & clever names: In DUTCH - "apestaart" meaning 'monkey's tail'. In ITALIAN - "chiocciola" meaning 'snail' In NORWEGIAN - "kroellalfa" meaning curled 'a'. In FINLAND - "miukumauku" because it looks like a sleeping cat. In DENMARK - "snabel-a", with snabel meaning the trunk of an elephant. And so many more. Where you @? Day 15/100: The Semicolon; one of my favourites. Some writers say you should never use them but I find comfort in their presence. And it stops me comma-splicing... sometimes.
