(klance friends with benefits to boyfriends with benefits. and it kinda got...carried away? whoops? mild angst but with a very mushy ending, because it’s me.)

“Hi, I’ve been subtly hinting that I want your attention all day and you haven’t noticed once and now I’m pissed.”

“Hmm?” Keith looked up from his book to see a rather irate Lance doing his best to glare daggers at him.

“I said,” Lance enunciated very clearly, “you’ve been ignoring me, and it’s pissing me off.”

Keith scoffed, doing his best to return to his book. It wasn’t his fault that Lance didn’t know how to deal with not being the center of attention for once. “I thought you wanted me to ignore you. Wasn’t that part of the arrangement?”

Lance groaned and flopped back onto the couch, tossing an errant arm over his face, mumbling incoherently into his his skin.

Keith sighed and closed his book and put it down next to him, resigned to the fact that he’d get no peace until Lance had decided he would. 

“Friends with benefits, that’s what you said. None of that, and I quote, ‘mushy boyfriend stuff.’ You don’t get to be pissed at me for not paying attention to you.”

“But I want you to!”

This time Keith fixed Lance with dagger-like eyes. “Again, this is not a relationship. You said so.”

Truth be told, Keith had been paying attention. Too much, in fact, which is why he’d decided that today, he wouldn’t. Just to prove to himself that this...thing that was going on between him and Lance didn’t consist of real feelings on his part. Because Keith having real feelings meant that they’d have to stop.

So he’d resolved to train without lingering eyes, to fly without any unnecessary competitions-a.k.a.-flirting, to finally read the only fucking book on this goddamn castle-ship. It happened to be Pride and Prejudice, which Hunk’d had in one of the many pockets on his cargo pants for some unknown reason. Safe to say, Keith hadn’t gotten very far until he got distracted by Lance’s own pair of fine eyes.

“And besides,” Keith said, getting heated, “even if it were a relationship, which it is not, as you have stipulated many times, I wouldn’t be looking at you longingly every single second!”

The silence that rang out allowed the echoes of Keith’s words to come bouncing back to him, and Lance’s silence only made the fear grow stronger that he’d given too much of his own heart away.

“I...”

“Lance, just--” Keith sighed. “I can’t do this anymore.”

Lance sat bolt upright. “What?”

“I can’t do this with you anymore. Friends with benefits, or whatever it is. It’s not working for me.”

Keith pushed up from the couch, grabbing his book before trying to walk away. But a tug on his arm stopped him, Lance’s gentle fingers gripping his wrist.

“Can I....can I ask what changed?” Lance’s eyes peered up at Keith’s, and Keith could see the same tears threatening to fall down his own face shimmering in Lance’s eyes. In a smaller voice, Lance asked, “Was it me?”

“Of course it was you,” Keith said quietly, intensely. “You made it impossible not to lo--not to care about you.”

“Keith...”

“It’s okay, Lance. I broke the rules, I’ll suffer the consequences.”

Lance’s grip tightened on Keith’s wrist as Keith tried to walk away.

“Lance, just...just let me go.” Tears were streaming relentlessly down his face now.

“No.”

“Lance.”

“No, I won’t let you go.”

“Lance, please.”

“Nope, not gonna happen.”

“Lance, you’re making this so much harder than it needs to be. Just let me go.”

Lance shook his head. “No, because I love you too.”

The castle could have gone careening into a wormhole at that very moment, and Keith wouldn’t have been any the wiser, because to him, time had just stopped.

“You...I’m sorry, what?”

“I love you, too.”

Lance said those words like they were the simplest things in the world, not something fundamentally earth-shattering. 

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Yes, Keith. God! I love you!”

“You--you do?”

And suddenly, Keith was tugged off-balance---though admittedly that wasn’t very hard to do considering the metaphorical rug being pulled out from under him---and he went tumbling into Lance’s lap on the couch, eager hands bringing his face up to Lance’s, even more eager lips pressing up against his until Keith started to kiss back.

The sensation was so familiar but so, so new, with smiles threatening to break across their faces.

“You love me?”

“Yes,” Lance said, pressing a soft kiss to Keith’s lips. “You love me?”

“Yes,” Keith said. And he found that the words were easy.

“Good,” Lance said, wrapping his arms around Keith to pull him more securely into his lap. “Now, pay attention to me. I’m your boyfriend now, so you have to.”

A grin tugged at the corner of Keith’s mouth. “Oh do I now?”

“Mm-hmm,” Lance said primly. “That’s the rule.”

“Hmm, I don’t think that’s how it works.” Keith reached behind him to pick up his discarded book, holding it up behind Lance’s head and continuing to read. 

Lance tried to snap the book out of Keith’s hands, but Keith was well-prepared for it. 

“I don’t think so. Let me read--I just got to the good part.”

“Keith!”

Keith just laughed, and Lance buried his face in his neck. 

“I love you.”

Keith felt the vibration of the words against his skin, and his body lit up like a live wire.

He tossed the book behind him and pulled Lance’s face up to meet his. “And I love you.”

It was safe to say that Lance felt thoroughly paid attention to.

fandom asks 1, 14, 24

1: favorite fic you wrote this year? - (according to ao3 i wrote 25 fics this year which is just…wild so um…this is hard to choose) I guess its probably either Get Some, or maybe To Welcome You Home? I had a blast writing Get Some (even this last chapter that is driving me crazy) but I’m also so weak to family fluff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯…but uh…this was harder than I thought it would be

14: a fic you didn’t expect to write? - um any of the prompts i got from @lesbianakari were a surprise honestly but especially the shlav ones…those definitely were not fics i ever would have written on my own and i still can’t totally believe i wrote them lol

24: favorite fic you read this year? - this is so hard to pick! i read way too much fanfiction to remember this! um I dont think i can name a singular favorite but a singular favorite from my main fandoms rn:

just come to me once by laallomri (voltron, klance, T) which i just realized is now updated/complete so i need to go finish that asap bc it was exactly the post s6 voltron i needed. the klance is so soft and good but there is also some actual development for keith and krolia that we were totally skimped on in canon and their travels in space were far more what i expected b4 they go to earth than what we actually got 

journey to the past by aloneintherain (bnha, class 1-a feels, T) makes my heart feel so warm and full even in the more heartbreaking moments like izuku’s friends being “imaginary” bc they! all! love! him! so! much! (and this is cheating bc this is abt a whole series and journey isnt even a part of it, but aloneintherain’s entire see it all in bloom (T) series is iconic and what i consider post-canon now until proven or convinced otherwise)

And like the cycle of the year, we begin again by katherynefromphilly (bbc merlin, merthur, M) this was such a good conclusion for the series set in modern day with amazing OCs and it felt so much like a story of its own i wanted to print it out and curl up with it like it was a real book

and last but not least

The Chronicles of the Virgin Asahi by Ellessey (haikyuu!!, asanoya, E) my hq obsession comes and goes and my latest bout of it struck about a month ago and ive just been scouring ao3 for daisuga fics i hadn’t read yet or rereading old favorites when i stumbled upon ellessey’s work and read 90% of it in like a week and reminded myself in the process how much i love other ships in hq as well (but chronicles also has some adorable daisuga and the family dynamic between daichi suga and asahi is my favorite thing in the whole world the 3rd years are my absolute favorites from the original series and they had such a good dynamic here with such wonderful writing it was literally a blessing to stumble upon this fic)

I’ve decided to pick my own prompt from the Grumpy Affectionate Starters to get me going, so this is #7.

“Hey, stop looking at me like that– I don’t like how cute you look.”

“…please?”

“Keith, listen to me. I don’t care how well you’ve mastered puppy-dog eyes. I love you, but I swear to god do the fucking dishes.”

Judging by Keith’s expression, Lance had just broken his heart.

“But–”

“I cooked, you clean. That was the deal.”

Keith gave a long-suffering sigh and flopped back down on Lance’s couch.

“They’re just so gross.”

Lance reached out and gave Keith’s leg an affectionate pat. “They’ll only get grosser. Just do them now so we have time to cuddle before you go.”

Keith just moved his legs to cover Lance’s lap. “I wanna cuddle now, though.”

Lance leaned over and gave Keith a kiss on the forehead. “You’re really fucking cute, you know that, right?”

Keith hummed, ready to settle in for Lance’s unabashed adoration. It was one of the things he loved about their relationship–Lance was never afraid to tell Keith exactly how he was feeling. Usually when Keith was being overly affectionate himself. 

“But I’m never gonna ask you to move in with me until you do the fucking dishes.”

Of course, that could backfire incredibly easily too.

Lance laughed at Keith’s alternately horrified and delighted expression.

“You want me to move in with you?”

Lance nodded, and Keith surged up to kiss him.

“Yes,” he said. “I’ll move in with you.”

Lance kissed him once, twice, three times before he shoved Keith off the couch.

“Good. Now do the goddamn dishes.”

From his stance on the floor, Keith beamed up at Lance. 

“Jeez, all you had to do was ask.”

8, shallura

“You need to see this.“ Shallura, modern/post not!canon-ish. Shiro and Matt are roommates and Allura is his lovely Altean girfriend and Shiro loves Steven Universe, shhhh don’t worry about it.

“Shiro! Come here, you need to see this!” he hears Allura shout from the den.

Shiro pauses the message he was typing out on his data pad.

“… How many legs does it have?”

“It’s not a–that was one time! Come here!”

“I’m serious Allura, how many legs?”

“How was I supposed to know you had acrobatopia?”

Shiro holds down a laugh, saving his document. He picks his robe off the chair and slides into his house slippers.

“I do not have arachnophobia, stop listening to Matt’s lies,” Shiro says as he shuffles into the doorway. “But seriously, how many legs?”

Allura rolls her eyes. “Two, it’s me, Shiro. I want to show you something!” She waves him over to the couch, he sits down carefully.

“Okay, I’m here.”

“I was watching the show on the television, and I had an amazing idea!”

“The show?”

“Yes, the show that you like.”

“Can you be more specific?”

“The one where there’s all the colors and the songs?”

“… That narrows it down, yeah.”

“Fine, I won’t show you anything ever again,” Allura huffs, picking up her ukulele from the table.

“Were you going to sing for me?”

“Yes but you’re being an ungrateful sarcastic grump, so I’m afraid I’ve lost my motivation.” She turns away, nose in the air.

Shiro raises an eyebrow. “Allura… Princess…”

One violet-pink-blue eye opens and looks his way.

Shiro pulls down the side of his robe, exposing his left pectoral. "Eh?“

“You’re ridiculous.”

“Woah-oh… I think my other sleeve might be slipping…”

Allura grins, and props the instrument up on her chest, strums a few familiar chords and sings:

“All I wanna do, is see you turn into… A giant woman, a giant woman! All I wanna be, is someone who gets to see, a giant woman!”

Shiro smiles as he watches her start to slightly grow as the song progresses.

“Okay, this was worth a wardrobe malfunction or two.”

Allura’s head nearly bumps the ceiling when she’s finished. Shiro claps and she carefully bows.

“Wait… you can play that?” he gestures to the instrument, now dwarfed in her giant hands.

“What, is it not played on this? Did I mis-hear the sounds? Should I have used the thing with the black and white buttons?” she gestures to the keyboard in the corner.

“No, it’s played on that, I just don’t remember you having one.”

“It’s Matt’s.”

“He taught you?”

“I taught me.”

Shiro laughs. “Allura! You can play music by ear!" 

"What, like it’s hard?” Allura scrunches her nose. “Takashi Shirogane. I am a giant woman, I think you’re overlooking what’s important here.”

Shiro opens and closes his mouth a few times. “You… you’ve got me there.”

“Finally!” Allura puts down the ukulele and scoops up Shiro in her giant arms. “I was going to put so many spiders in your room if you didn’t come to your senses!”

Shiro wraps his arms around her neck as she carries him back to their bedroom. “Wait… where would you get spiders?”

Allura blinks. “Certainly not from Matthew, who does not have a bunch of pet fluffy ones hidden in his bedroom.”

“… He told me the heat lamps were for growing plants. I just assumed he was secretly growing weed or something, am I living in a house full of tarantulas?!”

“And a giant woman! And maybe a snake or two.”

Shiro pinches the bridge of his nose. “Okay. One thing at a time. First, giant woman. Then, we plan the murder of Matt Holt.”

Allura laughs and ducks her head to enter their bedroom.

7. favorite books. the raven cycle series, gone girl, the dust of 100 dogs by a.s. king (i adore this woman’s work), and several other ya books that just really stood out to me. i get a feeling, though, when i’m done with where’d you go bernadette, it’s going to be added to this list

9. last film watched. i actually went to go see the new aladdin today! different, but def way better than the new lion king!
