i am feeling the same way, (((hugs))). ok, here's a distraction, why do you think azula lost it so much once she became firelord? it seemed very abrupt to me and it came out of nowhere. it was almost like they just did it so zuko could become firelord. and, why did she cry once katara trapped her and defeated her?

First of all *hugs forever* I wish we lived closer so’s we could hang out when shit got real. 

Secondly... DISCOURSE, HOORAY! 

Okay so. Azula. *Cracks knuckles*

She was NEVER stable, which is why I don’t think her descent into madness was all that abrupt. Mebbe they didn’t give as much emphasis to her story development as they did Zuko, so it didn’t come off as well? But for me, it was the culmination of how she’d always been. She’s obviously psychotic, and at first I thought she was a malevolent sociopath: manipulative, sadistic, completely lacking empathy.

But now I think she’s just as much a product of their abusive father as Zuko is; desperate and broken and craving love and validation. Like, as a child we see her being gleefully malicious, faithless, manipulative, etc...JUST LIKE DADDY.  Ozai treasured her, complimented her, obviously treated her like the favorite, which means she was probably mimicking Dad’s behavior to get validation. Thing is, no matter how much Azula tried, Zuko was the Heir, not her; which, considering that she was the more talented must have felt unfair. 

Of course, if she’d had good parents, she would’ve been nurtured to feel secure in her worth as the Second Child, and that she and Zuko were a team, etc etc. But her Dad was DEFINITELY a malevolent sociopath, and her Mom was a) an abused woman in a constant struggle with her powerful-and-evil husband and b) obviously favored Zuko over Azula. Her only other family was her Grandfather (who was a family man, but simultaneously super evil? Like he was loyal to Iroh, but was perfectly okay with having Zuko murdered??) and her Uncle Iroh, who once again favored Zuko. 

Azula’s mother actually called her a monster, something which is bound to fuck a child’s psyche UP. 

There was no one to teach her a good path, or to make her feel worthy except Evil!Dad Ozai; she was never praised unless she showed those awful, manipulative, violent behaviors. And at the same time, she was spoiled as a princess, because nobody but her Mom or Dad was allowed to actually discipline her. It’s no wonder she grew up into a monster. 

Zuko’s description of Azula was the Popular One Who Things Always Came Easy To, but looking back at Zuko himself, I’ve noticed something interesting: people are always trying to be his friend. He’s angry,  stand-offish and volatile, AND YET. Everywhere he goes, people immediately love him and want to help him, whether or not he deserves it.  

No one reacts that way to Azula. This may be part of where Azula’s drive for perfection comes from; the idea that if she’s just perfect enough, people will love her as much as they love Zuko. 

What people are responding to is the goodness and honor at the core of Zuko, but think of how that must have looked to a young Azula: somehow people like her brother more, even though she’s the smartest and fastest and most powerful. It must have felt like nothing Azula had to offer was good enough. Everyone always chooses Zuko. Her mother actually leaves them to save Zuko’s life, choosing Zuko over Azula (in Azula’s mind, anyway.) Even after he’s been disgraced and banished, her Uncle (the only family besides Evil!Dad she’s got left) chooses to go with Zuko instead of staying with her!

And then. AND THEN.  She goes to find her two best friends to help her on this quest to capture Zuko and Iroh (and she has to threaten Ty Lee to get her to come,) but like... the SECOND Zuko comes back into the fold, they gravitate towards him. Mai becomes his girlfriend, Ty Lee obviously likes him, (Ty Lee’s another person to be jealous of, because she’s so popular,) and once again it looks like Azula’s going to end up being second best. 

Even their common enemies like Zuko better. Remember when Azula was chasing Aang, that moment in the abandoned village where Azula and Zuko and Aang get in that three-way fight? Everyone ends up banding together with Zuko, against Azula.

With every instance where Zuko goes against Evil!Dad’s wishes and somehow survives and flourishes-- and makes MORE friends? WTF??-- Azula’s sense of what’s “fair” gets more twisted. She’s the one who always does what she’s told, pleases Evil!Dad at every turn, doesn’t break Fire Nation law...but Zuko is beloved. No one loves Azula.

This is, in part, why she set him up to take the fall if the Avatar survived; because in Azula’s mind, Zuko is allowed to fail. Azula can’t take that chance. 

And even after Zuko turned 100% traitor against the Fire Nation, Azula’s best friends (her only friends) betray her to protect Zuko. Betray her. Their BFF. The one who’s made them powerful and special. For Never-Does-What-He’s-Told, Less Powerful, Less Charismatic, Actual Traitor Zuko??

That’s the moment that breaks her. If she can’t trust Mai and Ty Lee, she can’t trust anyone. 

Now. 

Let’s be clear.

The reason Azula can’t command this kind of loyalty is because she’s a bad person deep down. Like, real deep down. Like faithless, cruel, selfish, arrogant, willing-to-murder-innocents deep down bad person. She’s a liar and a thief, spiteful and cruel, doesn’t do anything for anyone that doesn’t also benefit her, and her only goals are to gain more tyrannical power (and then maybe also have a boyfriend who will oppress the innocent with her.) She’s been a crazy bitch her whole life, and has done nothing to deserve the love and loyalty she craves.

But she doesn’t see that. She doesn’t understand herself or others. She thinks friends are something to possess, that you buy them by being powerful and good at stuff, and then you own them.

So when she loses her only friends, her whole world-view is rocked. If you don’t own your friends based on your power and skill, then how do you keep them? If you can’t command loyalty, then how can you be sure anyone is loyal? Azula’s forced to look back at what her mother said about her and either A) face the fact that she is a monster, that her own personal choices have led her to this, that’s she’s been wrong her entire life, and that if she’s to get the loyalty and love she wants she’ll have to change her ENTIRE PERSONALITY--

or B) lose her shit. 

So she loses her shit. Because of the two choices, that’s easier. Plus, she has the tools for that. She has NO tools for expressing her emotions or apologizing.

And the screaming at the end? That’s just rage and pain, babey. She put everything on the line, and she lost. She was wrong, Zuko was right, she lost and no one’s even going to be mad about it because everyone hates her and she knows it.

Bitch I’d be scream-crying too.

SPN Fanfic Reblog Weekend ❤️

It’s the morning after and I’m still feeling a little shocked and empty that it’s officially over. The thing is it isn’t over. In the words of Kripke, it won’t be until we decide it is.

We have written so many stories for these boys, fluff they never got, AUs, alternate interpretations of eps, extensions of eps. You name it. We’ve had them do it, and we’ll keep doing that. Sam and Dean will always be with us having new experiences through our words.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m in need of some of those stories right about now. I need the reminder they’re still here.

Happy COVID test / Day 1 of Quarantine to me!

I’m work in retail and am considered an “essential worker” so I’ve been going to work this whole time. I stayed home for a couple weeks in July when I got sick and test results took forever.  This week, a coworker tested positive so we were all sent home for 2 weeks or until we get a negative test and cleared from a doctor to return to work.  So if you ever wanted to talk to me, ask me anything, send a fic request, etc - now’s the time! Just keep in mind I plan to be an emotional wreck for at least all of Friday following the SPN finale lolll

10. Do you own any signed books/memorabilia in general? Surprisingly, yes! I have a signed copy of Thick as Thieves by @meganwhalenturner that I got from her local bookshop, a randomly signed @neil-gaiman book...I think it’s either Good Omens or American Gods? A signed Bastille poster that was part of a swag-bag at one of their concerts... ooh! And a t-shirt signed by Mike McCready from Pearl Jam from a McCready Foundation fundraiser. 

My problem with signed merchandise is I don’t really vibe with the whole “mint condition” thing. Like that McCready Foundation shirt? I’ve worn it for years, and at this point the signature is all but washed off...but what am I going to do, put it behind glass? Ridiculous. The reason I’m not sure of the Neil Gaiman book is because I can’t find it...because I was reading them both and then I got up to do a thing and now I can’t remember where I put them to check. I guess it’s the “use the good china” philosophy; you’re not really living if all your favorite books and things are behind glass just because they’re signed.

Control and Release - 30 (series) by @thecleverdame​

I think I might’ve nominated this series before, when I wasn’t caught up yet, but I am now and I just have to recommend this chapter. The entire story is gold but this chapter in particular had me sucked right into the scene at the end. The intensity of the fight and the way they deal with everything that is going on; the emotions, the worlds outside of their little bubble of safety. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it for whoever hasn’t read this series yet. But, if you are one of those people, I highly recommend you change that ASAP.

Better late than never, right? At least that’s what I’m telling myself to ease the guilt I’m feeling for how long it took me to finally read this series like I said I would. I didn’t enjoy it any less, that’s for sure. And that was even before I got to the twist that made it even better. I loved the vulnerability between Sam and Erin, and the different kind of friendship she had with Dean.

But what I definitely will say (and I will break into my upstairs neighbor’s apartment to scream it from their balcony if I have to) is this: STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING and go read this fic if you haven’t already. It’s a heavy read, yes. But it is more than worth it, I promise you.

Physically speaking, on the list of things I love about Dean Winchester, this checks almost every single box. I love the little things you’re noticing about Dean as the reader - his freckles, the contrast between his skin and the black shirt he’s wearing, exactly which Zeppelin song he’s singing while he works. The teasing is a nice touch too, especially the line about the night before. Proud Dean is so cute, and it’s exactly how I would expect him to react to being the hero around the house.

But there’s one particular Other Dean, a favorite one his mind drifts to during rare peaceful moments. Daydreaming when he should be researching, drifting off when a particular song plays on the radio while he’s working on Baby, even washing his hands sometimes will pull him back to those dreams.

6 paragraphs in, and I knew Val was going to break my heart. This is a gorgeous gorgeous story! Creative premise, great characterization, and written so that you can see and taste and feel every moment.

I found myself wanting to both read faster, and slow down and savor it. And yes, it broke my heart, but so beautifully that I would let it happen over and over again.

Kathy is new-ish to the SPN family but not to either writing or fandom, and it is immediately apparent in her first piece of SPN fanfic. Her creative storyline, her grasp of the characters, and her way with words make it immediately apparent that you are reading the work of a master!

Salvation (oneshot) by @dontshootmespence​

This story feels like an episode of the show from earlier seasons, just the right balance of angst and monster fighting with tantalizing peeks of smut and feels. Excellent job!

There are no words that come close to explaining what she means to him. How she saves what soul he has left. These flashback scenes are both hot and tender. The voice the author  gives to Sam is spot on, achingly familiar. The contrast between the flashbacks and the action is painfully good.

What’s more frightening, a man like Dean, practiced in his violence out of necessity? Or a man like him, on the verge of losing everything and nothing left to lose? This is a well drawn distinction between the Winchester brothers, and such a good characterization of Sam! It’s easy to forget sometimes what a fearsome hunter he is, but this author reminds us with razor sharp clarity.

“You’re safe with me, Sam. You never have to hide from me.“ Such a beautiful relationship between Sam and this woman! It’s no wonder he’s fighting so hard to save her.

This story has an imaginative plot, fast paced action and some sweet hotness! Plus the author does such a good job with Sam, I’m in love with him all over again. I haven’t read this author much before but you’d better believe I won’t miss a story now!

Also, nailed the “oh shit where did this predatory hotass come from” feeling that I totally imagine would happen during a first time with Sammy.

This is smutty and raunchy and HOT but it also manages to nail the sweet, loving side of Dean. Smut can so easily be one-dimensional, but this fic managed to be both filthy and tender in a way that feels 150% true to character.

An absolutely stunning exploration of some parallel universe Deans. Gorgeously vivid language, such incredible character accuracy, borderline heartbreaking but in a way that isn’t hopeless; it makes you feel FULL. My favorite SPN fic I’ve read in a long time.

Dean fixing a blocked drain under the kitchen sink in a black shirt and Levi’s jeans; what a sight that must be. The writer of this fic is able to describe the scene in great detail. Besides the obvious appreciation of the gorgeous man, it’s great to see him doing something normal and domesticated. It’s the life we all wish for him. A great little drabble for a Sunday morning with a cup of tea on the side.

A drabble that’s absolutely worth mentioning, is this short story. Beka does Dean’s PTSD more justice in 682 words than the writers have ever done on the entire show. A beautiful piece of art.

Dean has a crush on a girl, Sam is calling him out. When his little brother threatens to expose his secret, Dean tries to silence him, and it’s honestly the funniest read I’ve had this month. Writing comedy isn’t easy, but this was flawless.

This one hurts bad, but in the most wonderful way. It’s exactly how Dean would go down, the characterisation beyond perfect. The descriptions, the dialogue, the details, the choices. It’s a Rembrandt painted with letters.

Another brilliant creation, based on the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. A song which surfaces a lot of emotions, much like this poetic and amazing piece of fanfiction. Words that come to mind are heart wrenching, tear jerking, and in a way comforting as well. A must read.

The Voices (oneshot) by @fictionalabyss​

Based on ‘I hear the voices when I’m dreaming. I can hear them sing’ from the Supernatural anthem Carry On My Wayward Son, comes this breathtakingly beautiful piece of fanfiction. Perfect lines, spot on dialogue and it couldn’t have been more true to the character. It’s painfully raw, sad, and tears will fall. It makes you feel for Dean in ways that are difficult to describe. The writer of this story is known for her talent with words, but she outdid herself here.

This story is inspired by the song Nicotine by Chef’Special and was written for my 1K celebration. The lyrics to this song are surprisingly depressing, despite it being an upbeat song, and the writer has captured it better than I could have ever hoped for. If her writing was music, it would be a symphony played by an orchestra. Her way with words is melodic and moving. Goosebumps all over. 

 My Hero (oneshot) by @plaidstiel-wormstache​  

What I love most about this fanfic is the medical accuracy. I am no expert in any way, but after seeing countless medical dramas and having done plenty of research for characters and stories, I really appreciate it when knowledge about medicine practically drips from my screen. A lovely read.
