Hi stiff. I come to you for Desert Duo fic recommendations. I am but a fresh soul in the game (Been here since DL but is finally embracing it)

well well well! alright then! so a lot of the fics for desert duo aren't my cup of tea. most desert duo stuff i see is overly angsty and toxic and most of the time its grian focused. If you go looking through the Scar and grian tag youll find plenty of stuff im sure.

but. here are some of my favorite desert duo fics:

DAAU desert duo/scarian fic- a fic Jay wrote for an au of mine! includes alien scar, 6 legged jellie and a grian with a crush on the local alien! its very sweet and fluffy!

    Damian (29) and Duke (28) are investigating a pair of Suspicious Death™- expert circus performers who fell and died in the middle of their show

    They track down Dick (9) to his current Blüdhaven orphanage only to find him not there

    Duke finds him on the streets three days later, failing quite badly at finding the circus

    Duke brings him back to his and Damian’s apartment. Younger Brother Acquired.

    The duo “forget” to tell anyone back in Gotham for Dick’s safety

    Jason (16) is still, on occasion, attacked by Steph (22) with intent to harm (but not kill!). Unfortunately for him, Steph’s insanity has faded over the years but whenever it flares up she goes straight for attacking him

    Everybody assumes that the Blüdhaven vigilantes’ greater silence is due to them Going Through It and leave them alone 

    They refuse to train Dick (for now) because 

a) he is nine and they both know that training a kid to be a fighter from a young age Fucks You Up (duke is fighting the urge to call bruce and ask him Why The Fuck You Did You Train Me I Was A Baby)   

b) this child is so fucking angry that theyre a little worried if they train him they’ll have another homicidal vigilante on their hands (not counting Damian, a vigilante who occasionally kills)

SO at about .. a quarter way through their trip there is a point where Morris introduces the band to Sasha and Milla, a duo of eclectic indie rock stars who will help them on their journey (i havent decided how yet . lmao . but theyre here) if they in turn help Them with this show they're trying to perform at a local festival.

Donatella (who has been restlessly tracking her son, thanks to Morris announcing every place they've been so far over the radio,) has finally caught up to them here, but since the festival is so big its difficult to find him. So she has the family split up and look around.

Frazie in all this has... really been looking for an excuse to have a break from the circus life. She's envious as fuck that Raz basically got to escape and run off on a little rock & roll adventure because she's the entire reason he's into this kind of thing in the first place!! she introduced him to most of the music he listens to. shes even been practicing guitar! and its not fair.

so when she ends up being the one to find him at the festival, well... she's pissed, of course, but all he needs to do is explain why he's doing it. wanting to help their nona is excuse enough for her to say "well move over, pooter- i'm coming too!" because she Cant just let her little brother run across the country without a chaperone, right?

dion catches her in the middle of ditching the family and threatens to rat them both out to their mother, but before he can bust their entire operation gisu mistakes him for a rowdy crowd member trying to start problems and ends up knocking him out lmao. frazie explains the situation and in a panic, they end up picking up his unconcious body and piling him into the van and peeling the hell out of there. Dion Is Basically Being Held Hostage The Entire Time. He's Pissed About It .

so frazie and norma actually knew each other before Lizzie's band gets hired to play the circus- at least loosely.

frazie and norma both have accounts on old ass 2003 youtube . Norma would post videos of her playing various basslines of songs she likes, half informative teaching vids and half like her showing off. frazie in turn posts songs she makes up on the fly on her dinky accoustic guitar ... but both of them have the cameras angled so they cant see their faces in all their videos This Is Important (mostly to show off the chords they play and such) . theyve been following each other for a Long time on there , kind of obsessively in that way where you kind of get a crush on someone that you never really intend to act on because you know so little about them lmao. they just think the others content is cool! and they comment on each others vids from time to time . they build up this little like vague 'friendship' online ...

and when the band plays at the circus, frazie sees norma on stage- and immediately recognizes her by her bass guitar. and at first shes like overjoyed- here's this person she'd made this funny little friendship with , in the flesh... she didnt get to have many friends in person because of how much they traveled, so getting to see norma is like a dream come true!

until she actually talks to her and realizes that... oh. Norma's kind of a total ass . she's stuck up and pretentious, as we know norma to be. She’s not really good at making people like her. and frazie, who is insanely brash and a little rude herself, decides not to reveal who she is at the time because she just had the worst first impression on earth and shes bummed about it.

it’s when they meet the second time at that festival that norma realizes who she is, puts the pieces together, and it clicks in her brain that ohhh god shes kind of ruined that nice little pleasantry they had going. and at first she’s ready to accept it, because in the end she ends up foiling most of her positive relationships anyway so she can focus on her education (she still goes to college because it’s what her parents want for her and she wants to be like.. worth something, she doesnt want to be a disappointment, she cant stand the thought of being useless,) and the band really only keeps her around because shes lizzies sister and they have to.

but now she’s forced to spend all this time in this cramped van with this girl she had a vague weird little crush on and her two brothers and her ex-girlfriend that she broke up with but still has sad mixed up feelings for(gisu, who she is now watching fall for dion and it suuucks) so its all this tension building up in her brain...

one night during a pit stop at a hotel room, frazie finds shes having trouble sleeping and goes out to see norma sitting on top of the band van by herself. she’s noticed that norma ends up doing this a lot, spending a lot of time by herself. So , feeling bold, she climbs up there with her. and normas surprised by it, because theyve spent all this time on the trip getting on each others nerves, but now frazies trying to talk to her again? it’s weird. but she lets her, because it’s better than spending time alone with her own thoughts.

frazie starts off small talk at first , but it blossoms into this whole heart to heart, they end up staying up all night talking about how they hate the expectations forced onto them and how frustrating siblings are, how they got into music and things they like... they get in little arguments, still, but cant seem to stop talking to one another until the sun comes up.

Frazie realizes, oh, maybe norma isn’t so bad! but all norma can think about is oh, that was nice. how long is it going to last?

the raw potential of ???? Servant MC x Fitzie ???? ESPECIALLY if you ruined their matchmaking tests in Tally Ho by letting Mopsie and Figs get married and break off Frankincense and Rory’s engagement, the enemies to lovers drama, the tension and the emotional turmoil 

the two just slowly becoming friends who just argue most of the time, trying to bully or one-up each other like “MY employer won the boat race at Ritornello” “well MY employer just fell down a chimney and won the most dramatic entrance for the noble gases” but who will go OFF if they hear someone else talking shit about the other - the fact that THE epitome of perfection in the cardbury club AND its antithesis are just glued by the hip in their own weird way. SIT right fucking there and picture Fitzie’s emotional turmoil right now, they’ve done worse than falling in love with their employer, they’ve fallen in love with their (maybe one-sided, up to you) archnemesis. THE INITIAL STAGE OF DENIAL, THE SLOW DESCENT INTO LOVE, WHEN THEY CATCH THEMSELF SMILING AT THE SERVANT AND THEN THEY JUST BERATE AND SCOLD THEMSELF BC “NO !! BAD !! THATS SOMEONE I GOTTA BEAT IN THIS ARBITRARY IMAGINARY CONTEST IN MY BRAIN !!”  

Fitzie and the servant sharing quiet moments of understanding, ALSO sharing their respective pasts and finding a common ground they never thought they’d see (since the servant can also have the most unusual backgrounds like, a fucking lion tamer or whatever at CIRCUS ???? the servant FUCKS and thats final), and when they fall in love instead they keep trying to out-do each other just to catch the other off guard and fitzie fucking loves to get risky and just Go Out There Throwing Caution To The Wind sometimes. AND IF THE RELATIONSHIP IS PUBLIC ???? IMAGINE FITZIE BRAGGING TO EVERYONE WHO JUDGED THEM WRONGLY ABOUT DATING THE HOTTEST FUCKING SERVANT THIS SIDE OF ENGLAND. BUT ALSO the moments of insecurity when they’re kept apart by work and formalities and Fitzie WANTS to leave, pretend it didnt happen, assume the worst and so on but the servant keeps bringing them back bc what they have just needs a lot of work but its worth it. the possible over the top fights of “FUCK IT WE’RE DONE” but an hour later theyre already seeking one another unconsciously, looking for ways to make up or subtly and silently come to an agreement. THE MOMENT OF “YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE (your job and prestige if youre still working as a servant or something equivalent to that) OR ME” SIGHS

and then ??? the absolute dumbassery of Jolly Good MC x Rory Wintermint ????? rich kids in big scandals with intimidating aunts/quirky cousins who keep getting them in shenanigans ??? they become THE duo of the noble gases, the way they clearly shouldnt be mingling with each other THIS intimately, the fuss and conflict over whats proper vs what they want to do as young adults with big shoes to fill. all the failures that haunt them meaning absolutely fucking NOTHING because theyre having fun together in the present just playing billiards and breaking another window, sharing stories about their quirky servants and family outings and brunches

and then sharing feelings about not knowing what to do with their lives, feeling bad for depending on their aunts now that their respective parents/guardians are gone because according to aunt matilda and aunt primrose,  that theyre just not mature enough to manage their own finances or manage their own lives since they’re in urgent need of a servant to keep them in check. LIKE THEIR LOVE IS BASED ENTIRELY ON A CHILL FRIENDSHIP UNLIKE WHATEVER THE FUCK SERVANT MC & FITZIE HAVE - and honestly i have no idea how their families would even do upon learning about their relationship bc i got no clue about who supposedly has more “prestige” cause fuckin aunt matilda knows aunt primrose but theyre like the typical ladies who arent friends and just like to brag to each other but anyway

the first is #11 and #86. they were my absolute FAVORITES, a mother and daughter duo, a lot of their stories revolved around the kitten getting lost and the mom having to get to her, or the kitten dying and the mom having a mental breakdown. 11 mostly acted as a single mom but sometimes id cycle out different potential dads, usually the dog lps bc i did Not care abt the actual scientific lack of interspecial breeding possibilities

“Paws off diary” Bull Terrier. ok this ones weird but he came in this lil electronic diary right (you can google how it looks to see what i mean) and there was this like, plastic bubble on top that he came in and you could stick him or any other lps in there and shut it securely cuz it was a diary so i. used it as like. a prison almost where id trap lps and the other characters had to ‘save’ them like they were rescuing a princess from a tower or smth. but it was usually just this lil guy. also he was given a name but i was kinda cheating skjdfsdf it was, “Max” bc that was always his name in the commercials for the diary--

#646 and #647, twin orphans separated at birth. did a lot of princess and the pauper esque ‘long lost siblings from different worlds’ reunion stories with these two

#94. so this one came with a head bandage and a little medical looking case to carry them in. i used the carry case as like an ‘ambulance’ or med helicopter to put ‘sick’ pets in and carry them to the hospital, and this pet had chronic illness so they were always the roommate patient at the lps hospital.

#10 and #142, the goldfish couldnt be taken out of the bowl if i remember correctly so. he felt sad and isolated but the seahorse was his best friend who was able to go anywhere so id stick him in the bowl with him a lot to hang out n make him feel better. solidarity

1. okay so we’ve already talked about this one but i love it sm. peter & dick have been working together for about 2 years by now both super young vigilante babies except one day batman walks in with robin but its not the one peter knows. it goes on for about a week wherein no one addresses the fact that that isn’t peters old friend and he’s getting so frustrated that no one is answering him directly until later that night there’s a knock at his window and its some fucker in sweats and a domino mask and its dick on the verge of a breakdown who tells peter all the dirty details of how he was fired/quit and how he doesnt know what hes gonna do now, maybe live with the titans but that means not seeing peter and just YEA 

2. GOING OFF A NEW52 PLOT peter never finds out nightwings identity (and vice versa unless pete tells batman) so he finds out when the world does. peter watches from a tv when nightwings mask is ripped off and then later when dicks heart stops. he thinks hes dead but he notices batman acting all weird so he goes digging and he ends up finding dick alive & then they work together in spyral and also peter never lets dick live down discowing now that he knows hes meant to be some elusive and cool bachelor dick grayson

3. AU where Haly’s circus was in New York the night dicks parents were murdered so he ends up in a group home in the city. there he meets peter parker, who also just lost his parents. they grow up normal enough & besties in the home cause they have no one else until one day peter gets the spider bite. one of the kids in their home (jason bc im gonna make this complex or die) got jumped the other day and dick has basic martial arts training & acrobatics so HE starts vigilanting and one day the ‘famous’ nightwing & spiderman meet and as soon as they hear each others voice theyre like ‘….bro???’ *cue villain attack*

4. nightwing & spiderman having to run from the law when SHRA takes effect, essentially being runaways together and living in dingy places all around the world (ignoring peters actual side in CW 1 & 2 altho CW 2 could b a cool plot too) 

5. COLLEGE AU okay we could do this several different ways but ima go ahead and say: peter & dick have been heroes for years but when they finally turn 18 they both kind of realize they want normalcy. so they apply & get in to the same colleges, get an apartment together, and slowly keep edging back into the superhero life until its just like *peter sneaks in through the window at 3am to see dick sneaking out of the window in costume* bro.

So let me talk about Molly one last time

So, with the cast officially leaving and moving on from Molly’s grave (and all reunited) it seems to me that we won’t see our purple tiefling anymore during this storyline. A lot of people are wondering why some still haven’t gotten over the fact that he died or upset about the fact that no resurrection attempts were done. And, while I can’t speak for all of us, I want to share my little experience going through Molly’s death.

For a little bit of background, I love every single member of the M9. I love their interactions with each other, how they grow, how they’re developing and all of their backstories are so interesting and exciting! So, why am I hyperfocusing on this one?

First of all, when Molly first appeared he didn’t immediately go to be one of the baes. He wasn’t a favorite then (honestly for a long while Caleb held that spot) and while I was interested in him, I was still not fully into him. And then episode 7 hit.

If anybody knows me, I’m a sucker for Widomauk. I shipped them lowkey in the show but super Highkey in the fandom. I wasn’t expecting them to become canon but I had a bit of hope that they would waaaayy down the line. This wasn’t the episode where I necessarily started shipping them, but it’s the one that got me the whole “hmmm interesting” vibe you get before starting to ship something.

But this is not why episode 7 hit me. Personally I didn’t find the kiss to be super duper shippy... but I felt it was important and while it gave hints to Caleb’s past, it also gave hints to Molly’s personality. Molly, a dude from a circus who barely knew Caleb and who could’ve definitely just left the handling of his panic attack to his much more closer friend Nott, decided to personally douse the flames and attempt to help him out of it (not in the most healthy way or correct way but he’s not the smartest one of the bunch). And so... I became a little bit more interested in him.

What took the gold was episode 9 and the Syphillis bandits and that... was it. After that incident I knew I was a goner and that he was going to be the fave of this campaign. The way he handled it, the way he treated the bandits and the way he kind of did it with some excellent lines along the way? All good shit.

I became more intrigued with him after episode 13 and the reveal (or partial reveal) of his backstory. There was so many possibilities and so many things with it that I had questions and I was excited to find out. So, even more tabs on him were placed.

What got me in the next episodes was the fact that... he didn’t shine in a lot of things. He was an ok character in battle (doing a lot of damage and some disadvantages but not a lot of defense or long range or healing), he didn’t have high charisma (so no talking himself out of stuff, which is something that Tal excels in ) all he had were exceedingly good character moments (Nott and the letter, the swords with teleportation, dunking Fjord in the water, the vases in the dungeon, the tapestry, inciting a drinking competition, etc.)... so then why is he fave? It’s because I could relate to him a lot. Not just because of his representation (which as a fellow bisexual, it is important to me as well) but because of his pseudo confidence, the way that he just put up a wall of bullshit in front of him to prevent people from touching his past or himself... it’s something I personally do sometimes. A wall of flamboyance and overconfidence. The only person that I actually saw him bring it down a little was Yasha whenever he interacted with her. And slowly, so so very slowly, the others.

So, when episode 25 happened and I learnt he was going to be in a situation that forced him to interact with the teammembers he usually had not exactly the closest relationship with? (He essentially had his best friend, current roommate and growing friend, and the tiefling that he instantly clicked with gone and would be forced to interact with the disaster lesbian he was always fighting with, the goblin whom he had a strange but friendly? antagonistic relationship and a wizard who was still dealing with the fact that he was #aLot) and I was very, very VERY excited. Because he was going to have to interact with them, he was going to be forced into a very stressful situation with them and stressful situations could lead to unification. And I was. So. For. It.

A bit into my personal life for this, around the same time that 25 hit major changes were happening in my life. Major stressful changes. A lot of things were happening that I had no control over and that I understood that things wouldn’t be the same. Because I was in the middle of it, I essentially compartmentalized it and focused on CR2, which was my leading fandom at the time (like when we obsess over something for a long ass time because we’re like WOAH) mostly because it was a lot less stressful than what my life was. During the break week between ep 25-26, I had to say a lot of goodbyes to people I really care about and so I was not in a very happy place. So I went into 26 being very excited about this character I super related and was excited to see their development because people kept saying that he barely had any development with other characters before.

And then... IT happened.

I wasn’t even watching the livestream because I was already emotionally exhausted but I tuned in on Twitter to see if the episode was over and saw people freaking out about it... so I tuned in... and within 5 min of me opening the new twitch tab, Molly died.

And everything in me exploded.

And it was dragged out. Because I knew it was very impossible for them to resurrect him on the spot (being a D&D player myself I knew the limitations). I knew that there may not be a high level cleric around. Or anything else. And yet I kept on hoping and hoping and hoping until it was official. Because all I wanted to see was him growing into this family he created and now we may never get a chance to see it.

So of course I’m upset. Not just because of the lack of potential. Of us potentially never finding out what was up with his backstory. Of us never seeing the true winner of the initial shipping wars. Of him and Fjord starting their own version of a prank war. Of the disaster tieflings. Of the unpleasant and obnoxious duo. Of him and Nott snarking at each other constantly. Of him slowly starting to spread his physical affection with the rest (mostly Mr. Caleb-still-can’t-admit-theyre-friends). Of his relationship with Yasha. But because he was somebody I really identified with. Somebody I wanted to see canonically grow into a better and different person. And now I can’t. And it’s unfair, and it’s sad.

I do like Clay. I do like his backstory and his design and the peace he brings to this group that is desperately in need of somebody like him. (Hell I wrote a fic about him because I do believe he does the M9 good.) And he’s not replacing Molly and I don’t think he ever will. And while I’ll be very happy to see his interactions with the rest of the group, it still won’t be the same. And that’s ok! New characters bring new and interesting dynamics, but it doesn’t stop us from missing the old ones.

And so, because of all the mess of emotions that became tangled with ep26. I still can’t go back to the series. But I do still love critical role. And I do want to see the end of it. I just need to re-discover why I love it.

A good friend of mine once lost a character she really liked in a series (he died permanently as well, and well before his time too). And she took a break from it because all she kept seeing was how people moved on from him and while it was beautiful and good, she couldn’t handle the fact that her fave was not there anymore and that people were already moving on. Surprisingly, I got into the series about a year after this happened and because I kept texting her about it and being super duper excited about it... she got back into it and got up to date with it despite what had happened.

And so, I will definitely get back into the series (and writing more stories about it). And I still wanna know what’s up with the rest. But it will take some time and some healing. And then I’m sure I’ll find myself being super duper excited about something that happens that I’ll just HAVE to start watching it again.

But for now I’ll rest up. So don’t blame people who are still sad about this. And don’t expect people to not be upset about a character that died early on in the series. People associate fandoms and art with different things and we still need time to process stuff.
