rei and miri's physicality: a chronological analysis (part 1)

Time to go into one of the meta topics that has been buzzing in my head for a while now. It's about how Miri and Rei interact with respect to physical contact, and how I am smitten by the way he's so gentle with her and lets her take liberties with him. This is gonna be long and image-heavy [NB now has descriptions]. I have to split it into two parts because of the image limit.

Episode 2! This is the first time that Miri and Rei have physical contact with each other, and it's Kazuki pawning her off to Rei so he can make breakfast without her running underfoot.

As I went to get these screencaps, I noticed that Rei's hands automatically come up to hold her even though he's clearly kind of sceptical about the arrangement at this point. (Lol at Kazuki backing away as though he's afraid Miri is radioactive).

Episode 3! And here begins a running gag about Miri's favourite way to wake up Rei lmao.

I'm curious as to why Rei was sleeping on the sofa to begin with, when that's where they put Miri until she gets her own room in episode 4, and Miri didn't know Rei slept in the bathroom until later on.

Miri goes looking for Rei after Kazuki turns down her request to sleep with him. She finds Rei sleeping in the bathtub as per usual for him and eagerly clambers into the tub so she can sleep with him. Going by the setup of Misaki's apartment in episode 11, she's probably used to sleeping with her mother.

Despite his resting bitch face and reserved demeanour, Miri is already super comfortable with him. She's plopped on his chest, pawing at his face, and goading him to smile. And Rei is very accommodating of her whims. He later tells her to stop kicking the back of his seat in the car, but doesn't tell her to stop pawing at his face. Around this time in the story, Kazuki complained about her climbing into his lap when he was trying to eat, but Rei just....lets this happen lol.

There's a cut out and it fades back into her asleep in the tub, wrapped in Rei's blanket as he looks down at her from outside it. The implication seems to be that she just tired herself out pawing at Rei and then he relinquished his sleeping spot, probably to go out on the sofa.

Such a significant moment. I had already realised that this was the first time that Rei had addressed Miri by name, but it was only while I was drafting this post that it hit me that this was also the first time he had willingly and consciously initiated physical contact with her. I also think it's significant that he repeats the 'Let's go home, Miri' line after she's jumped into his arms. It's him fully committing to the sentiment.

It's sweet how after he has made his 'I'm her papa' resolve, he doesn't seem to put her down again until they meet back up with Kazuki.

Episode 4!

It's so adorable how Miri loves climbing on Rei and how he just let's her despite him not being a tactile person.

Him keeping Miri on his lap after they both woke up from their nap is so precious.

Tsundere Rei lol. Even though he acted very put upon to be there, he was clearly paying attention and even anticipated the high five coming before Kazuki did.

I think this is the only instance of her hugging both their legs at once and I love it. I love it! It's so dear to me. I love this family 😭

Episode 5!

Rei's expression here is golden. Miri, like most small children, is very adorable. But, also like most small children, she can be very annoying lol.

We get another instance of her preferred method of waking up Rei--jumping on him--band she even shakes him for good measure, but he's simply too tired to react.

This is also a good point to note the difference between him sensing something and waking up before she even flipped the lights in episode 3 and the way he's now so comfortable with her presence here that can even sleep through her deliberately trying to wake him.

I wish I had a gif because screenshots do not do justice to the softness with which Rei picks up and gazes at Miri while she's asleep. He's 1000% having a 'that's my baby girl; I'm her dad' moment.

And just look at his expression after Kyu reveals he knows what the deal is. He's nervous about what Kyu will do, and there's also so much 'don't take her away from me' energy coming off him. I see in him shades of the Rei who will tell Kazuki that he wants to keep taking care of her after her mother is killed.

People loving android!Robin makes me so happy anansnssndsnsns she's curious and excitable and full of wonder and the world keeps punishing her for simply being alive. Sometimes it's too painful even for me, big whump lover 😭😭 though seriously, there is not enough Robin whump, and while all the characters in the show are very whumpeable, hurting my little blorbo Robin feels special because... she's just so deeply lonely. She's lonely and she thinks she deserves to be because of something wrong with her (pulling this interpretation from Surviving Hawkins lore which is canon to me 😭). That was a big idea I had when I first came up with android!Robin... that there is something wrong with her. Broken. In this AU she's literally broken in a lot of way (battery and memory problems, weak joints in her lower half, etc), but that's all within the range of normal robot problems. The real issue with her is that she's sentient. It terrifies people because it really brings out the existencial horror of... well, existing. It terrifies Robin most of all. She is the problem. She is what's wrong with her. She shouldn't exist.

But at the same time, she loves being alive so much! She doesn't understand it and doesn't know how it happened, but it happened, and now she's real and wants to experience life and the world and know people like human beings do. So it's her constant battle to become human despite humans having hurt her so much in the past... only for Nancy to already see her as human. Just one made of metal and plastic, but human nonetheless. She's the first person to see her that way and maybe everyone else thinks she's crazy, but Nancy is used to that. She's so sure of this, though, of Robin's self-awareness. She trusts her so blindly. She doesn't even need proof. And not only does she believe her, but she defends her humanity in front of her friends and family so ardently, fighting so hard for Robin to be aknowledged by everyone else as human. Fighting so hard to give her a home and family for the first time in her life.

Nancy has it bad for Robin, really. She's just so in love, even if everyone else thinks she's crazy for falling in love with a machine (no one thinks she is, though, because they all know Robin, and once you know Robin, it's impossible not to love her).

the short stories are actually really provocative and profound, heartrending and disturbing and thought-provoking and funny all at the same time and in such a short amount of space.

but i feel like when n*tflix touched them, they were the first victim of a withering away and soul sapping for me, in which i couldn't bear to be around the kinds of discussions and jokes and everything which were coming up at that time as fundamental misunderstandings of them so it just became very painful and very banal because they were all, in essence, forgotten.

however, that damage is not irreversable.

particularly in the case of a good adaptation, the musical, i have begun to remember all of why i love the short stories so much, just how good and painful to my heart they are, as well as thinking more deeply about some aspects which i had not previously considered or paid a lot of attention to (in lieu of other things which excited me more).

i think the biggest strength of a "good" adaptation and a "good" fandom is that they make you realize things you hadn't, interested in parts that weren't your 'favorite,' and generally expanding your mind and love of the source material. in contrast, a "bad" adaptation or "bad" fandom is that which makes you wish to forget and eventually end up forgetting your love and leaving it behind yourself. "good" is to remember, "bad" is to forget.

WHAT IS YOUR PRIMARY FEELING IN LONGING?

frustration

In longing, you feel frustration. You feel that you've almost reached your desire one too many times and you don't understand why you keep getting denied. You feel the universe is taunting you, playing just beyond your reach and leaving you on the brink of breaking every time it dances away. When you let yourself feel your yearning, you bury your face in your hands and turn to look at the sky, not expecting an answer, but pleading for relief. There's a burn in your heart that you just can't explain in words but it's deep, you can feel it in your throat and just under your chest. You take a deep breath and exhale heavily. It settles you enough to continue on as you were. You see others living your desire and you don't feel jealous per se, but the burn raises in intensity and you just wish ... something. You want change from your current situation, at this point you don't really care what it is, just ... something. Have courage, my dear, you can brave the fires of this world if you so wish.

i feel like epilogues are always tricky but at ease really hit all the buttons. the subtle hint to deans alcoholism, cas' suicide attempt. how a conversation can suddenly take a wrong turn, but you have people around you who love you and they will help you through it. how love can be so scary in the beginning but now its a comfortable touch you lean into. and while things could be so much better, you at least have the man you love beside you, holding your mother's wedding ring, while your family sleeps in the other room, all full and content with the life you all have created

📍Worlds 2017 FD practice

-some musings

It’s kinda funny reading a couple of comments on the YT video of this practice that were obviously written before the competition, that said ‘oh I love their new ending pose’ referring to this moment. It’s funny to me coz it doesn’t seem like that at all- knowing this was never the actual ending pose (if they changed it) and that it is obviously just spontaneous in the moment.

The way you can tell that is T didn’t know that was gonna happen, because you can see she started to lean back thinking he was going to lay her down, and when he didn’t, she stays suspended there for a moment, him holding her so gently in his arms as he seemingly got caught in her eyes for a moment and didn’t follow through with the actual end pose.

She wasn’t suspended very far back, it’s quite subtle but it’s so soft how in that little moment of miss-communication, in the most beautiful way, he catches her off guard a bit so even for a brief moment lets her float there semi-weightless in his arms with the most gentle touch while they stare into each other’s eyes. He holds her so effortlessly- no indication in him at all the decision not to lay her down- just a subtle impulse, that right hand on her back holding her so close to himself; no hesitation, no insecurity-like it’s the most natural thing in the world to hold her heart close to his own. Her hand in his hair, him so delicately holding her head so he can stay fixed on her eyes. Then as she surrenders to the magic of the moment, she sits back up and their foreheads fall together as both their hands, so softly still in contact with each other fall away- her’s down his face and his fingertips tracing down her first few vertebrae- made even softer by the fact her beautiful pale skin always becomes flushed pink in the cold of the arena.

It’s moments like this where those of us entranced in their magic are reminded that their entire world exists between their eyes fixated on each other’s. Obviously not the whole time they are skating but when they do come back to that it is like they are being third wheeled by the whole world.

A whole conversation just happened in those few seconds without words, then when he does actually say something and they bring themselves out of that trance, that magical little moment lingers. It’s these kinds of moments I imagine there was so, so many of in the privacy and protection of their home training. They are truly magical when they perform for an audience but little moments like this, that in reality last just a few seconds maybe for them they can make feel like hours, just locked between their eyes or their foreheads resting against each other’s like a little prayer. It’s such a conflict to watch the spontaneity of a moment like this where you feel like you are witnessing the most pure form of love playing out before your eyes, but at the same time feel like an intruder knowing those are usually only reserved for, or rather born in a much safer environment, left wondering just how many moments like this they shared and how a special place that must of been, free of judgement, criticism, or any speculative boundaries, where their love could just exist for what it is.

As they come back from that moment, not knowing what he said, again through his beautiful, soft touch on her bare skin, indicates ‘we are going to hop up now ok’ and guides her back to her feet, ensuring she’s on balance before standing up himself. Again not hesitant about legitimately lifting her up for the most simple on motions, but so gently through using the palms of his hands lifting her upwards rather than squeezing her uncomfortably. Through just about everything they do on the ice it’s so obvious that she is completely at his mercy- meaning that she is never, ever in danger of falling or getting hurt. Her complete and total faith in him to guide her and lead her, to make decisions for the team while still maintaining her voice and role in stabilising their emotions. Completely at peace with their duties and responsibilities to each other, I suspect still in there lies two little kids who at first were shy to hold each other’s hands, yet at the same time certainly felt so special to have been given a partner to skate and dance with. I feel there was still always this little excitement and giddiness in 28 year old her, this special feeling, perhaps best worded by T herself as ‘thank you for.. holding my hand… for 22 years’ kind of special feeling. And while that may have been what they valued as the most intimate gesture that had the honour of sharing, I imagine the same went for moments like this- moments of gentle spontaneity, soft cradling and forehead touches, little whispers and eyes locked on each other creating a world where no one else could enter.

SILENT

a lot has happened to you. its demoralizing, i know. you cry with your head leaning against the wall, tears streaking your face. your lip quivers but your mouth stays firmly closed. you keep your problems to yourself to not bother anyone.

FRUSTRATED

so many big things have happened that a little one sets you off. your angry and that anger turns to hot tears. you scream in frustration and try to verbally or physically release all of the anger by yelling/throwing things. eventually you fall into a pile on the floor full of brokenness.

SOB

you are a sob. youve been through so much and the pain has finally caught up to you. you make soft broken noises as you cry. your life has been hard and everythings piled up on you, and in this moment it becomes too much. you sob for a few minutes before the tears stop and you just lay in pain. one of the worst cries.

HAPPY

a lot may have happened to you, but in this moment it doesnt matter. everything will fall into place as God [the seven] intends it to. you know you will be okay, because whatever caused this cry is how it needs to be. the future is bright and so is your renewed sense of hope.
