there’s something so crazy about the way they’ve been building up ruby and blake parallels from the very start of their friendship. one of their first interactions arises because they’re both fans of books and fairytales, but they have wildly different perspectives of them. blake, who thinks that happily ever afters are naive, meets ruby, who thinks happily ever afters are the goal to strive for.
after this, though, we don’t get a lot of moments between them. however, the little moments we do get are packed with loads of meaning. whenever they’re in a difficult situation, blake looks to ruby to have a plan. she both supports ruby and looks to her for support (something that she didn’t have a lot of experience with with the last leader [cough, adam, cough] she followed).
“we’ll follow your lead, ruby.”
the biggest interactions that we see between them by far, however, is in volume 8. blake reflects about who she was before adam, and how she’d also been positive and hopeful like ruby (who now looks back on her own optimism with disgust). she even goes so far as to say that she’s admired that someone can hold onto that trait as long and as hard as ruby has.
“i know you don’t always know what to do, but that’s never stopped you from doing something. i was like that as a girl, but time — and a lot of other things — took their toll on me. then i wasn’t sure if that kind of girl could survive in the world. until i met you… i’ve always looked up to you ruby, and i still do.”
and now we've reached volume 9, where ruby's influence on blake has helped her find her old true self once again. at this point, it's established that blake and ruby are following the same sort of character arc, both determined to make the world a better place but both continuously beaten down and defeated until they no longer believes in themself. and now that blake managed to pull herself from the trenches of self-loathing, we'll be following ruby's own journey of doing so as well.
but that's why ruby's "shut up, don't do that." line to blake hits so fucking hard. because she hates facing the same thing that she'd said once upon a time. she hates facing her own naivety and her own attempts to salvage a situation.
she hates facing herself.

fabian’s insistence on calling someone to tell them about lucy & yolanda because he thought people just deserved to know, out of respect. both deeply sweet & incredibly gutting. (bill seacaster move over that’s MY darling boy)

Fiona and Cake spoilers seriously
(Something I noticed abt Betty and Simons relationship)
I love Betty and Simon’s relationship, I think their back story is so cute and romantic and all that lovely stuff don’t get me wrong.
But there’s this under tone of Betty constantly giving things up for Simon and we don’t really talk about it a lot???
Like, Betty let Simon have his moment with the artifact and the pubic, she also doesn’t go to her trip in favor of going on an expedition with Simon. Then when she goes to leave again she stays for Simon.
Even Fiona is like “you went with her on the bus?” And Simon just looks all confused like “what? No, why would I do that?” Like- hello???
Then after that she gave up her entire life and mind to get Simon back to the point where she literally says “I don’t know who I am without him anymore.” And that just sucks! Since the beginning Betty has been the one giving up the most, her mind, her own possible career, and it’s a story of love of course and it’s very sweet but it’s also a story of sacrifice.
Their love wasn’t a perfect solution, it was already sort of imbalanced when it started and I lowkey love how we see those cracks even before they’re together.
Again, I love their relationship and I think it’s sweet. I just think we should talk about Betty’s side more, especially when she tells a story of what most women do in relationships, sacrifice.

The Owl House takes place on a corpse. That's clear from the beginning. The people we meet, the fantastical things we see, every part of it is life that comes from death, and it's beautiful. Luz says that, the first time she's far enough away to see the bones. It's beautiful. The Titan was so full of life and magic that what he left behind could be passed on and made anew, and the people who sprung from that, who rely on it, understand that and are grateful. Everything they have is built on the bones of a god.
But what grows from the bones of children? Nothing. Nothing at all.
The Titan hunters killed children. They said they were monsters, but they were children. Children who played games and laughed and from their first conscious moments wanted to be loved and belong. And they hunted them to extinction, and kept their pristine skulls as trophies. An entire room full of them, of tiny skulls that could've become something wonderful and terrible and life-giving but never had the chance. They wear them, as a badge of honor. Look what I've done, look what I destroyed.
Philip Wittebane had been making grimwalkers for hundreds of years, sure, but even knowing that, there's so many of them. How many could've reached 20? There's piles of them, of bones and identical masks, scattered at the bottom of a pit, and god, were they dead, when he threw them down there? It's clear that he doesn't care, that the only thing that matters is disposing of them once they wear out their usefulness, moving on to the new model. Children tossed aside, left to rot and decay, and when we see them the bones are all clean.

man while i'm on my felix kick it fucking sucks that they keep not knowing what the FUCK to do with this character when he's actually very strongly characterized. i went off about this last night but like, underutilized aspect of felix: he's like, a really good leader?? and i'm not talking an uber-inspiring protagonist-type leader like the PC; i'm talking an extremely functional organizer of people that you especially need in a military context. it's kind of hard to clock at first if you're not paying attention, especially because you're introduced to him while he's desperately trying to stave off a mutiny; but considering he's on a shithole iceball with a group of restless 18-to-25-year-old recruits who, as far as they're concerned, are trying to kill an immortal enemy, the fact that only one of them winds up ultimately raising a hand against him is impressive. he boosts morale, he makes good tactical calls on his own while not being too proud to take assistance, he metes out swift discipline without being needlessly punitive. and when the squad splits up, people keep in touch with him!!!
like, felix is extremely good at his job, and that aspect of him kind of deepens the tragedy of his permanent stagnation in rank when you compare him to other soldier comps like Rusk or even early-game Jorgan. i'm not a fan of fictional or real militaries but this character's skillset as an officer has been a repeatedly underutilized resource narratively & it makes me want to eat glass

I keep thinking that Celebrity Booze is an objectively shit episode that I mostly like because they’re dangling Breaking Bad actors in front of me and I’m easily amused and then every time I watch it I’m like No this is good actually
And a big part of it IS like meta humor in how they’re using their guest stars who are most well known for starring in a prestige crime drama like. The commitment to the bit of only acknowledging Malcolm in the Middle and the premise that these guys are this famous in-universe for their Malcolm in the Middle role. Referring to them almost exclusively as ‘Malcolm’ and ‘Malcolm’s dad’. And then also casting the fictionalized versions of these actors in a weird ambiguous abusive situationship so they can perform a secondary narrative function of paralleling and the shows own ambiguous abusive situationship. Like you get Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston and that’s what you do with them. Extremely funny choices I love it.

Hmmmm, having many thoughts about the new episode.
I really enjoyed seeing Jack Black, that was awesome. And I loved Din “petty” Djarin knocking over droids. That was fun. Still very much enjoying the season, but I am starting to get a little nervous for how it’s going to end. We’ve got, like, 2 episodes left and I’m not quite sure where we’re going with the plot.
We all assumed Din going to the Mines of Mandalore to redeem himself would be the focus off the season, but it happened in 2 episodes. We’ve gotten some fantastic insight with the covert, and even more growth with Bo Katan. But it still feels like something is missing.
I do feel like Bo reclaiming the saber by killing the creature that attacked Din to be a bit…sloppy in writing. I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic or interesting than that (we don’t even know what that thing was either. It was never explained.) I’m okay with Bo being the leader, but I was hoping to see Din get more action with the Darksaber.
Was also hoping we could get more growth between droids and Din this recent episode. He is obviously still very paranoid of them, and kind of has it out for them. Seeing the battle droids that ATTACKED his home as a kid, I was hoping we’d have something a bit more with that too. He obviously seemed very angry, but like…where’s the trauma from season 1? It obviously wasn’t cured and he’s obviously still distrustful of droids. Idk I guess I also assumed if he’d come face to face with the droids that attacked his village he’d have more of a visceral reaction.
Also thought this would give him a new perspective with droids, what with them wanting to live and make a life for themselves. Hell, I was hoping it would go into them helping him find the piece he needs for IG-11 to restore him.
It just feels like there are a lot of loose threads, and we’re getting so close to the end, I’m worried they’re not going to tie them off. I’m still enjoying this season, I’m beyond excited every Wednesday to see what happens next, but this season does feel a little all over the place.
Anyway, I’m gonna say optimistic anyway! Still looking forward to these last few episodes and still crossing my fingers that Boba shows up! I’ll withhold my entire opinion of the season until the last episode airs!

this series is a delight
what made me giggle and kick my feet the most yelling at every character in this series "it's me!" is the fast pacing of it all which - while needed to make the best use of 24 minute episodes - really drives home the somewhat frantic undercurrent that exists as a 30 year old
probably not much different in your 40s etc but they really do catch the wild pendulum of "i am a professional earning money" and "my crush from highschool turning up thouroughly derails my life"
they are both grasping for life experience they still have to go through to help them which....is obviously not how this works
if anything the preview for next episode makes me even more optimistic: both deciding to lean into their attraction for each other and telling themselves they are able to anticipate the outcome since they're adults...while I can already feel that both will be delightfully wrong

this might sound dumb, but listening to WizBru and in particular hearing Holden talk about the times he, as the children say, put his whole pussy into some pop culture phenomenon and had a great time with it, has kinda changed how I take on things like that and has increased my enjoyment 1000%.
like idk, it might particularly be bc he's a 40 year old dude who's embracing fun and often "girly" things instead of being derisive and superior, admittedly. bc there are a lot of those kinds of dudes in my day-to-day life and seeing a dude be not only Chill but Enthusiastic is a nice change. also might be because I come from tumblr where everyone's shitting on anything popular and a little silly the instant it comes into existence.
but listening to him talk about how he wholeheartedly loves Blackpink and thinks they're super cool, or how he started a singalong at the tswift concert movie, or wearing pink and going to Barbie, or just...anything. is like. oh right sometimes pop culture is just for fun and you can just have fun and be in the Fun Space for a while and you can still critically examine it but also just. have fun. and let having a good time be a profound experience for you.

it's TRULY a pity that there's no prospective "fandom" around here for La promesa (for one, idk how easy it'd be to watch the show outside spain). because yes, I know people IRL that watch it and that I can talk to about it (mainly my mother xDD).
BUT. although there are plenty of things I can say about the show and discuss with those people (singing praises to Jana as a protagonist, complaint about the cop's stupidity, laments on Pías tragedy, my curiosity about Simona's past, theories about the secrets, my appreciation for how this show writes the working class characters, etc. etc.)...
if I tried to talk about how hard I'm falling for the Rebecca-Mrs. Danvers vibe these two bad bitches bring to the show they'd all look at me like I've gone insane xDD
I'm obsessed with them <333
