Random question but do you know if the 616 Coffee Bean gang and Felicia have canonical birthdays?

Oh, this is a tough one. Superhero comics birthdays are a little rough -- sometimes there's no information, sometimes there's contradicting information, sometimes there's a birthday but it's for one Eisner winning miniseries that is about the fictional "real people" who, in the comic, inspired the superhero characters. (And even in that example it was two different birthdays, one in the single issues and one in the trade.)

I don't think there's an "official" canonical birthday for Peter. I've seen a lot of people use Spider-Man Day -- August 1st -- as his birthday, because it's the anniversary of Amazing Fantasy #15, Peter's very first appearance. Even though it isn't, actually, the anniversary -- there's conflicting dates for the release of Amazing Fantasy #15. Some information says it actually came out June 5th, other information says August 10th. So you can see how we're getting tricky already. I don't think there's anything wrong with using any of those dates for Peter's birthday, but if you're someone who wants one specific date -- there just isn't one. I know his passport is flashed in Spider-Man: Far From Home, although I can't remember if the date is shown (and I'm not looking at that movie again), so it's possible there's a concrete birthday that could be pointed to for MCU!Peter. But would it apply to 616!Peter? Shrug. That's the kind of thing people need to decide for themselves. Personally, I think the Amazing Fantasy #15 dates (all of the various ones) are really interesting if you wanted to run an astrological chart to look at the impact of the character on our world -- his continued relevance, the shifts in characterization and tone throughout the decades, how he reflects and is reflected upon by our real world. But that's a different thing than an in-universe canon birthday.

And it's difficult to use first appearances as birthdays for the other characters in the gang -- you could for Mary Jane and Felicia, if you wanted, but Harry and Gwen appear for the first time in the same issue, which would give them the same birthday by that rule, and the same goes for Flash, who appears for the first time in Amazing Fantasy #15 alongside Peter.

Harry does have a birthday listed in canon -- Dark Web #1 says his birthday in December 13th. I don't have any particular feelings on this or reason not to just go with it, aside from my deep and burning hatred for the whole Dark Web event. It's a little cute if Harry Osborn, given the sliding timescale, was born on the exact same day as Taylor Swift. He has the energy.

For Gwen and Mary Jane -- we don't have birth dates in 616. We do have issues that contain birthday parties. And I really need to get my refs folder back on my laptop because this would go so much faster if I could just look it up that way. (If you google "Mary Jane Watson birthday" it will tell you August 19th, but that's from someone's wiki for their fan project. There seems to be a general September birthday for Gwen from ITSV, but I don't know if I would choose to use that for 616 Gwen, personally. That's another "you gotta do you" situation.) Spectacular Spider-Man #9's backup story, Sweet Revenge, features a surprise birthday party for MJ, explicitly on her birthday. Again, the older comic dates screw us a little bit -- the cover date is September. The information I can dig up says this was actually released May 16th. Gwen has a birthday party in Amazing Spider-Man #87.

Again, I have conflicting dates for this one, but it's a little funny -- the two dates I've found are August 1st and August 10th, two of the dates given for Amazing Fantasy #15's release date. I kind of like the idea that it's actually Gwen's birthday that the grand Peter celebration falls on. There's something very starcrossed lovers about a date assumed to be Peter's birthday actually being Gwen's. Something something how intertwined Gwen is with the text, long after her death.

For Felicia -- I have nothing, unfortunately. I can't think of anything that would even give us a reference to get close to a month, let alone a date. The same goes for Flash. If anyone knows differently, please let me know!

616!Eddie Brock should not be allowed on Twitter because he'd see something like "would love to see more mlm romance in media 😔" and he would immediately launch into a 12-tweet-long thread about how we should NOT be romanticizing multilevel marketing schemes and how they are a way for the rich to get richer and how instead we should boost stories about small business owners and on and on

until approximately one hour later he quote-tweets himself saying "I have been informed that 'MLM' is a more versatile acronym than I originally thought. My apologies for the misunderstanding and let me also clarify my unwavering support for the queer community of this city.

still thinking about the fact that one of my mutuals didn't even technically tag me in a thing about Spider-Man 3, she just did a casual little "@ kita" without making it a real "@" and somehow I still managed to come across it in my massive dashboard. the universe is conspiring against me. she knew that somehow I'd see it. she manipulated the energies of reality and so now here we are and against all good reason I want to rewatch SM3 and by that I mean suffer.

My #1 post of 2022

I think my favorite kind of comics-based fanfics are the ones where you can tell the writer went into it with at least 200 issues of whatever they're writing behind them because they have a lot of good characterization and reference to multiple events in canon and tons of knowledge

but they have very obviously cherry picked what they did and didn't like to create the story THEY want to see the whole time I'm reading with tears streaming down my face yelling "yes.... YES!!!" because they're so galaxy brained for that

Spider-Man - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27.

Will answer the ones I can.

1 Norman/Otto. Just...where did this come from?

2. Peter/Harry, of course.

4. Most versions of Peter/Gwen, and sadly yes, they are.

5. Not quite, but ALMOST Peter/MJ, believe it or not!

7. Venom and Carnage in the 616 comics. Both started out as cool villains, both decayed into obnoxious, badly drawn and out of place edgelord characters who ought to have been left behind in the 90s. A close second would be 616!Doc Ock. Dan Slott ruined him forever.

9. Carlie Cooper's the easy answer here, though she never took off into anything else. In other stuff, there's been no version of Philip Watson or Miles Warren who I've liked, they're just horrid people.

10. For comics, One More Day/Brand New Day, easily. For TV, the "Return of Hydro-Man" two-parter in the 90s series, the second arc in The Spectacular Spider-Man, and the "Bring On The Bad Guys" arc of Marvel's Spider-Man (2017). For movies, the Amazing Spider-Man duology.

12. Spider-Man: Far From Home seems to be LOATHED by hardcore Spidey fans and purists, but I still love the shit out of that movie and think it did more to set MCU Spidey in the right direction that any of his previous appearances (tellingly, No Way Home only happens due to what Mysterio pulled in this movie).

13. On MJ... Raimi!MJ and Kirsten Dunst's portrayal of her was not only mostly alright, it's hands down one of the best iterations of MJ and the GOAT love interest/leading lady of Spider-Man movies. And Zendaya's Michelle Jones Watson in the MCU is not only better than some straight up Mary Jane adaptations, but she's also a GOAT leading lady so it's a damn close call between her and Raimi!MJ.

14. The Spider-Man purists suck and usually have no idea what they're talking about.

15. The earlier Ultimate Spider-Man comics are underrated, MCU Spider-Man was never bad, and the 90s animated series is overrated - both The Spectacular Spider-Man and even Marvel's Spider-Man (2019) are superior to it.

A/n: damn I can't write anything except actress reader? smh but this is for @londonspidey ‘s sit-com Writing challenge (ik I'm early lol) but I was so excited I wrote the whole thing in one go lmao the prompt is bolded!

Calling yourself a fan was an understatement. You were obsessed with anything and everything marvel. And oddly enough, you could after today say you were in the club. It wasn’t a public fact yet, until later that day actually, at the Marvel panel at comic con that you were being announced as the actress for the character, Felica Hardy and no one else knew except for the people who cast you and your best friend who signed an NDA. You were technically still a known actress for your roles on television mainly as Thalia on the PJO Disney + series and a couple of still decently sized films. 

You were currently wrapping up signing autographs for fans of yours for today. Your team had planned it out so it wasn’t suspicious that you were at the con with a few of your castmates scattered doing other junkets and press so people wouldn’t guess who they were acting as the cast for new marvel projects. 

You had been planning to go meet your best friend, who wasn’t in the industry before getting a text that she bought you both a photo-op with someone and she wouldn’t tell you who. You couldn’t only assume it was a marvel actor that you would indeed, freak out. 

Y/b/n: btw I brought you a mask. I get the wig lol.

You: please tell me it doesn’t cover my full face. Also, how are we posing?

Y/b/n: I bought as many photo ops as I could so a lot of different ones, And if I tell you the poses it’ll spoil it.

You: is this with the money I pay you to be my assistant with? Lol fine I’m omw with security

Y/b/n: maybe… 

Y/b/n: and they’ll need more backup security for who we’re getting a photo op with than you do for your hellfire.

You roll your eyes before taking your stuff and exiting the booth, before heading out the backways with staff security and your detailed security for the day. You only had security because you wanted to explore the con when you weren’t needed.

Your best friend had also been your assistant for the con weekend, but you didn’t want her to be confined to you the whole three days so when she could, you would let her explore it, at least she could experience it as a fan, right?

When you made it to that part of the building, you wanted to wait in line with her, which your security didn’t agree to so she texted you when there were about five people ahead of her. She was one of the last in line, with you asking her to be kind, so others would get their chance to be first with whomever it was. 

When she texted you and your detailed exit, getting a few stares and others taking their phones out to either take photos or tweet, you wave at them before joining your best friend in line.

“Here,” she says before handing you none other than a black cat mask before she puts on a red wig. 

You glare at her slightly trying to not make a scene, before putting it on. 

“I’m assuming you're Mary Jane?” you laugh figuring out that it had to be someone from Spider-Man.

“How’d you- never mind.” She laughs with you.

She then explains how she’s going to pose for your five photo ops, joking in between how she should “get a raise for this”.

You catch sight of him before sucking in your breath. This was either going to go down amazingly or terribly, there was no in-between with you. 

“Excuse Me, are you Y/n Y/l/n?”

You turn around and are met by some fans who were standing in line behind you.

“I am! How’s your con going?” you ask politely to the two of them.

“It's going amazing! We love you as Thalia! Could we maybe get a picture? Only if it’s okay?”

“Of course! Thank you for supporting me!” your best friend grabs their phone to take the photo, before you take off the mask, and stand between the two fans, and your best friend snaps a few photos. 

“Thank you so much! And Are you fans of Tom?”

You start slowly walking back to catch up to the line. 

“Yeah, I love him as Spiderman, but I also enjoy his other roles. He's very talented, I'd love to work with him one day!” 

“Have you seen him in Uncharted?  We love Him as Nathan drake!”

“I have, he was amazing per usual! How are you two posing with him?”

They show you their innovative pose. You laugh and tell them it's great before you have to wish them goodbye before heading up for your turn for the photo op. 

“How do we want to pose- hang on, I recognize you!”

You freeze slightly before your friend mouths for you to flirt. You look down at the mask in your hand before getting into character and saying “Of course you do Spidey, I'm always causing you trouble.” you put on the mask and wink. 

He seems slightly stunned, laughing, feeling like he’s seen you somewhere, not only because he found you extremely gorgeous, while in his peripheral vision he sees his brother/ assistant, Harry waving like a madman on the side. 

Your friend directs you both through the poses, first, one both him putting “webs” onto you as she looks over his shoulder, the second one, both of you kissing his cheeks, the third, all jumping in the air in your best superhero poses, the fourth one she gets a photo op alone and the last one she gives to you,

“Seriously, who are you?”

“Your Wildest dreams, baby,” you say, taking off the mask. 

Your best friend yells “freestyle” from the sidelines before Tom dips you, gently, with you shocked, holding the mask out with your free arm and the photo captures that moment. 

 He gently helps you stand back up fully, not before you drop the mask.

“Nice moves Spider-Man.”

“Not so bad yourself, Black Cat.”

You laugh before, taking off with your best friend, well more her dragging you to the printing station leaving the mask behind. Tom picks it up before shoving it in his back pocket to hopefully give back if he could find you.

`You were sitting in the green room, trending on Twitter before you were actually supposed to be trending on Twitter, and god knows where else.  

Someone had snuck a video of you and Tom, up till him dipping you, and a video of you interacting with the fans in the line.

Your Y/b/n was currently reading off some tweets out loud

“‘A kind queen we stan.’  I agree, I also agree with ‘Date her if you can't date me tom!!!’.

‘THALIA AND PETER PARKER??? My two fandoms have collided.’ same, same. Oo this one says, ‘if she ain’t playing black cat I will sue marvel.’ I'm dying at the reply ‘She needs to post the photos or I'll sue her!’. This one’s funny, ‘she could squash him like a bug in heels but he liked his queen like that.’.”

She pauses watching you texting.

“Y/n? Y/n?”

“What? Sorry I was only half listening. I was texting my publicist. She said to stay on the DL until tonight. 

“Well we should get food, you haven't eaten since this morning.”

“By the way, your show has shot to number one on Disney +. Also, you have like three times the followers you had before, probably cause you're trending on every platform, even Tumblr!”

“Wow you should just become my social media manager now.” you joke trying to ease the joy yet weirded out feeling in your stomach.

“Does that come with a raise? Because after today I've spent way too much of what I'm paid.” she jokes back.

After finishing his photo ops Tom asked Harry who she was and to find out. By the time he finished autographs for the day, Tom and Harry walked to the panel room in the back for announcements, one that included him for the new Avengers movie, while Harry gave him the rundown.

“So she’s an actress, she plays Thalia on Disney plus’ Percy Jackson series, and that's her most known project. The other girl with her is her assistant best friend, and now she's trending everywhere. People dug up some old photos of her being a marvel/Spider-Man fan, so there's that. And she's here at the con for the rest of the weekend. She's doing photo ops tomorrow at one, and yes she's single from what I gather since you were looking at her like this.” he makes a weird face before tom smacks him.

“And plus you have time in your schedule to get a photo op with her, that is if you eat lunch quickly.”

That gave Tom an idea. 

“Harry I’m going to need you to book me one, oh and help me find a Spider-Man costume!” He says, before leaving harry to do ‘assistant’ work. entering the green room for the announcements, watching them announce a new movie.

“We are so excited to announce to the Marvel Universe, and spider-verse-” that perked tom’s ears, “-directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and today we are announcing our amazing Miss Felicia Hardy, please give a warm welcome to the stage, Your Black Cat!”

You suddenly emerged in an aisle way, dressed in all black with a leather jacket, black ankle boots, and of course black sunglasses indoors.

The music is marvel music until it suddenly changes after a recorded laugh from you into “I can’t be tamed by Miley Cyrus”.

You start owning the music while saying hi and touching fans’ hands. You decide to take off your sunglasses and throwing them to a fan, for them to keep, before getting on stage.

“What a Performance from the one the only Y/n Y/l/n!”

You laugh, being met with the loudest applause you had heard all con before being handed a Mic. 

“Thank you but I'm a terrible dancer.” You Joke.

Tom was staring at the screen stunned. You had been the black cat all along. You were in the marvel universe and spidey one,  so he'd definitely be seeing more of you. The hard part is that you seemed so genuine when you talked, interacted with fans and was no doubt, stunning. 

“Better close your mouth or the flies will get in.” Tom turns around to find the voice of none other than his friend slash bully, Sebastian Stan, along with Anthony Mackie.

“Looks like the kid has a crush!” Anthony laughs, pointing to the screen you were on.

“I-I don’t! I don’t even know her!” Tom tries to come to his own defense, hopelessly.

“She’s got you whipped already don’t even deny it.” Harry comes in, joining the teasing of one, Tom Holland.

“Maybe we can invite her out for drinks tonight, then fanboy over here can meet her, and then probably scare her off!” Anthony mentions.

“You haven’t looked on the internet? They’ve already met.” Seb says, before showing Anthony twitter. 

Anthony stands there slightly shocked before bursting into laughter.

“Well, she’s damn well a keeper for Tom since she obviously likes him.”

A staff member peaks their head in the green room to tell Tom he’s up next.

“Well, that’s my cue to leave you two!”

On the other hand, you were on an adrenaline high from being on stage, and seeing all the fans. You knew tomorrow was going to be crazy, as you expected people to book your photo op left and right since the announcement. 

You had decided to decline an offer from your fellow marvel universe castmates, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, which they so graciously told you that whenever you’re free, the offer still stood. 

You had gotten to your hotel room seeing your phone blowing up on the social media apps for the second time that day. 

You responded to the important stuff, before heading to bed, knowing it was going to be hectic.

You had been right, it was absolutely insane, the number of people who showed up. You had fully booked all your time slots for photo ops. You had seen so many people dressed up in marvel cosplay, ranging from Loki to Ironman, even some people dressed up as your character, which was wildly insane to see.

You had been nearing the end of the line and had enjoyed every moment with the fans, and you couldn’t wait for your autographing session later that day, to truly get a chance to talk to the fans and connect with them and how they felt about you being their beloved Black Cat. 

After a few more photos, posing how they wanted, you see a fully dressed, head to toe, mask and all, Spider-Man. You had seen some spider-mans but most took off their masks to snap a picture. The person was the last in line. 

“Hey Black Cat.” The southern American accented voice tells you, seeming very familiar. 

“Hey, Spider, what poses do you have up your sleeve?” you ask kindly.

“I bought a few, Cat.” they laugh.

“Okay, You can do whatever a spider can right?” you pull out a line out of the comics jokingly.

“I can do flips if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Is that some kind of nerd pick-up line? Because it’s only kind of working.” you laugh. 

“I really can, but this is one.”

He gets down on one knee, holding a black cat mask instead of a ring. The photographer captures the shocked expression on your face.

“I- Don’t- What- Spider I-” 

“Ow My feelings…” Suddenly their voice changes into a British accent before they pull off the mask to reveal-

“Tom?”

“I guess you don’t have a spidey sense darling?” The photographer captures the moment without warning eating the moment up. 

You laugh at that. 

“I guess you found out my true identity Spider. And it’s nice to officially meet you, Tom.”

He laughs, just as nervous as you, he notices he has gotten closer to you and a strand of hair loosely is blowing in your face, so naturally, he pushes it behind your ear. Another snap of the camera can be heard. 

“NOW KISS!” a voice belonging to your best friend yells from the side, mid-eating a churro.

You both laugh really hard at that.

The both of you calm down, slowly leaning lost in the moment. The camera snaps again. You both look at the photographer weirded out, and they just shrug.

“Wait can you actually do a flip?” you ask, pulling away, not wanting prying eyes aka the photographer, to pry in your business. 

“I can, though I’d show you later, maybe in the greenroom?”

“That sounds naughty, but, sure.” you joke around. 

He laughs before, you both take off from the area going to grab the photos.

After spending most of the day together when you could, you get Tom’s number, before heading back to your hotel room. He texts you as soon as you get back. 

Spider: I had fun today, minus finding our assistants making out.

You: we should ‘snog’ too, it’ll gross them out ;)

You: I had fun too btw. Are you leaving tomorrow?

Spider: lol we should. And yeah an early flight, 6 am to be exact. Hbu?

You: Yeah me too... another day another dollar lol

Spider: ill miss you, Cat.

You: stop talking like we’ll never see each other again lol. As a matter of fact, come to my room, we’re watching a movie!

Spider: alright, I’ll order snacks. 

  You sigh smiling at your phone. You haven’t felt this giddy in a long time.

Your phone pings with a few Instagram notifications.

if you could choose any spidey ship to make canon, what would you choose?

I guess it depends on what canon we're talking about!

So for MCU Peter, I really want to see him get back what he had with MJ because they were so cute and their dynamic worked really well. I love that MCU Peter has sidekicks and that his MJ isn't damseled in a way that subtracts from her character. Like she doesn't let people into her life so when Peter saves her, it's a symbol of her choosing to be vulnerable and let other people in (as opposed to other MJs that are very open and trusting so them being saved doesn't add anything to their character). So my MCU canon pick is Peter and Michelle (although if Peter goes to college and meets Gwen and Harry, I'd be so down for him to date either or both of them. Also, there are rumors that Reed Richards is going to be in Multiverse of Madness so that means a fantastic four and that means Johnny Storm!!! Honestly, I think the really youthful starry-eyed hero-worshipping Peter would be so fun with Johnny!! Like Peter vlogging Johnny, fully leaning into the superhero celebrity thing and Johnny instantly falling in love with the first hero he's met that's his age)

For Andrew Garfield's Peter, I'd say give him an MJ, just make that MJ a black man. But If I had to pick an existing character, it's Deadpool obviously it's Wade Wilson!! Spideypool has been teased in the comics for so long, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield have amazing chemistry, the amazing spider-man franchise has a darker tone that could fit Deadpool, it'd be a great way to establish where in the multiverse the Deadpool movies fit. Come on it's spideypool this should have been canon canon like yesterday!!

If we're talking comics... my answer is complicated. Because nothing and everything is canon in comics. Like Peter has a long list of women that he dates off and on in the comics depending on the run and the author. I kinda just want to see that with dudes too. Maybe he and MJ are married in one run, but in the next he's not and is in friends with benefits situation with Wade that turns into more than that, the next he and Gwen are dating but it's complicated because he and Harry had a thing in high school and it's making goblin drama difficult, the next one he and Johnny Storm are teen flames that are trying to make things work now that they're older and they have very different relationships with being public superheroes, and then the next one Felicia Hardy and him have a thing. You know? Who is Peter's canon love interest is a long list and it changes frequently. I don't expect Peter and Wade to hold the same weight as Peter and MJ because sometimes Peter and MJ aren't even a thing. Basically, I want Peter to be confirmed bi and I'd sell my soul for a Spideypool romance run

"It's too bright." I hide my face from the sunlight into Harry's chest making him chuckle.

"You should've seen the sun come up from our view." He sits up.

"Did you stay up all night?" I rest my head on his lap, and his eyes showed he didn't sleep at all.

"I wasn't tired. Do you work today?" He plays with my hair.

"No, are you wanting me to work? Boss?" I make him laugh.

"I want you to stay with me while I work."

"That sounds like work to me so will you still pay me?" I reach up tapping his nose.

"As long as it stays between us and no one else finds out." He smiles pulling me to sit up on his lap.

"Trust me, I wouldn't tell a soul. But if you're making me stay... I need to go home and change clothes." I lean into his chest.

"That will take too long. Just go to a store near buy and buy a new outfit." He wraps his arms around me.

"You're gonna make me buy a new outfit with my own money... when I could just go home?" I lean back giving him a look.

"No, I was gonna give you my card to buy it." He kisses my nose.

"That sounds better. Now... we should probably get dressed." I get off him putting my hand out to help him off the couch.

I put my clothes that I had on yesterday on while he walks over to the other side of the room putting on a new shirt and blazer.

"Well that's unfair." I walk over to him dressed and he pulls out his wallet giving me his card.

"Now...don't go on a shopping spree." He says as I reach for it but he moves it away, "Promise me."

"Don't worry. I'm not that kind of girl."

He places a finger on my lips, "I didn't hear promise." He smiles so I mumble promise.

He just looks at me slightly smiling before leaning down to kiss me while his hand held my face. I of course kiss him back with the same amount of passion he was giving me.

"Thank you. And I promise I won't spend a lot. Like I said, I'm not they type of girl." I step out of the kiss but he grabs my hand pulling me back for one more long kiss.

"Good morning, Mr. Osborn." Felicia walks into the office making Harry and I pull out of the kiss.

"Good morning, Felicia." Harry gives her a smile. "Don't take too long." Harry lets go of my hand.

"I'll be back soon." I leave walking past Felicia giving her a small smile.

After buying a new outfit, I changed in to it before heading back to Oscorp. When I get to the office I see a guy in a some kind of body armor and three workers stand by watching.

Harry sees me eyeing it as I walk into the room, "New military body armor." He bounces a ball towards me and I catch it.

"Looks cool." I hand him the ball back along with his card.

"How much did this all cost me?" Harry lightly tugs on my shirt pulling me closer to him before wrapping an arm around my waist holding me super close to him.

"I can't tell you it's a secret." I joke leaning closer to his face as I Felicia and Peter come in.

"Maddie?" Peter says confused to see me.

"Did you call him while I went to the store?" I lean back some.

"Yeah, I wanna show him what I showed you." Harry smiles, kissing my cheek before walking over to them a little bouncing the ball while Peter frowns looking at me.

Harry tells Peter about the Military body armor before the guy leaves the room. Harry starts to talk about work upset and when he throws the ball too hard it breaks a vase then almost hits Felicia in the face but Peter catches it.

Felicia walks over to clean up the mess but Harry stops her. She sees his hand acting up and he tells her, he's fine and he needed a moment with Peter.

"You okay, Har?" Peter asks him.

"Oh, not really. I'm dying. But I think you can help save my life." Harry bounces the ball to Peter.

I just knew this wasn't going to go very well as we all go into the conference room. Harry shows Peter what his father left him and one of the files were labeled Peter.

"What is this?" Peter asks.

"He had you, your aunt, and your uncle under surveillance. It's crazy right? He spent more time watching you than me." Harry takes a seat next to me as Peter stands up to look at it closer.

"Why?" Peter asks.

"Isn't that the question? Did they ever tell you anything?"

"I know nothing." Peter shakes his head then Harry shows Peter the video I saw last night.

"They never made it to human trails. It's 14 years of research, and nothing to show for it. Except maybe this." Harry throws down the newspaper with Spider-Man. "Spider-Man."

"What about him?" Peter says exactly what I said.

"He was bitten by one of those things, and it worked. I don't know how and I don't know why... but he can do everything else a spider can... including self-heal. I need to find him. I need his blood." Harry explains to Peter.

"His blood?" I speak up since he didn't tell me that last night just that he could possibly help.

"It will save my life." Harry looks at Peter as he sits down.

"It may not. Har. It may not be that simple. You saw what happened to Curt Connors, right?" Peter says what I told Harry last night.

"As I told Maddie, who said the same thing, Connors was weak. This is me, Peter." Harry says softly.

"I don't think you can just set up a van... and have him donate. I mean, I'm sure he's sensitive about people shoving needles and..." Peter has trouble telling Harry.

"Well, then, maybe you could just sensitively tell me where he is... and I will go ask him myself." Harry raises his voice slightly.

"What?" Peter asks.

"You took his picture." Harry shows him the paper closer.

"So?" Peter asks, trying not to look over at me.

"You know him"

"Harry. I took a picture from a long way away. I used a long lens. I don't know him." Peter tries to explain.

"I put together what you both said at the river. About how he gives people hope. Come on. Just say yes." Harry looks at both of us.

Peter gets up slowly walking towards the door making Harry turn him around, "Don't turn your back on me! I don't wanna end up like my father, Peter. Please. Peter, please. I can't. Please." Harry hugs Peter.

"I'm gonna try... and find Spider-Man." Peter leaves the room.

"I'll talk to him." I go after him.

"Peter." I rush to his side.

"You two seem ever closer now. Kissed you on the cheek this time. You leaning towards his face... Did you know he was gonna ask that?" Peter whispers yells at me.

"No!" I whisper yell back at him.

"What are you two a thing now?" He stops turning to face me with a disappointing look.

"I stayed with him all night because he was having a breakdown after finding that video and other things. He doesn't want to die, Peter. And I tried to tell him what you just told him. It might not work." I get frustrated with him.

"How you kiss him?" He asks not caring about anything I just said.

"Peter," I let out a tiny sigh.

"How you?" He says through his teeth, tearing up.

"Why does it matter if I have? Explain to me because we aren't together." I raise my voice as he presses the button for the elevator.

"Because I still care about you. I still love you!" He shouts at me.

"If you did you would have never made me break up with you. And it shouldn't matter if I've kissed Harry when you still love me because I told you I loved you and then you went and kissed Gwen right after it!"

He just stares at me before roughly pulling me into a kiss and I can't help but kiss him back.

As the doors open we both step inside standing away from each other. "You just kissed me." I decided to speak up.

"I know, I'm sorry. I couldn't help it." We avoid looking at each other.

We are in an interesting point in time when the three major Spidey love interests each have solo books.

Amazing Mary Jane by Leah Williams, which is currently up to issue #6

Gwen Stacy by Christos Gage, which is currently up to issue #2

And Black Cat by Jed MacKay, which is currently up to issue #10

In the case of Gwen Stacy it could be argued she in fact has two titles if we include Ghost-Spider by Seanen Maguire, which is currently up to issue #9

I’ve finally caught up with all 4 titles so I thought I’d sort of evaluate them.

In terms of artwork all the titles have decent-great art. Gwen Stacy is the clear winner here but she’s only had two issues so there hasn’t yet been time for new artists to do fill-in issues or pages. Black Cat’s art was serviceable at best at first but between the annual and the artist on the latest storyline it’s stepped up big time. In ontrast I feel Ghost-Spider’s art is perhaps the weakest exempting Black Cat’s initial artist. I can rarely call out art as good or bad so this is 100% subjective. But for my money Todd Nauck’s work is my absolute favourite closely followed by Carlos Gomez on AMJ. Cover art is a whole other kettle of fish. Black Cat and Gwen Stacy win this for me because Adam Hughs is a god-tier artist and J. Scott Campbell is a guilty pleasure for me.

In terms of writing things are far more clear cut.

Black Cat is by leagues and bounds the best title. Once it warmed up in the first 5 issues it’s slapped hard. It’s characterization of Felicia is superb. She’s fun, flirty, confident, but fully capable of making mistakes. She’s well rounded when all is said and done. Maybe she could be moreso, but it’s absolutely a-okay for now. The book’s concept is fun and has a real direction that allows for variety in the storytelling. We can be at the Baxter Building, the Sanctum Sanctorum or Madirpoor and it will never feel jarring. And honestly Felicia was long overdue a spin-off. She is simply the most obvious character to be spun-off from Spider-Man.

In second place I’d put Gwen Stacy and no one is more surprised by that than me. The plotting of the book has thus far been good exempting one kind of major detail. It uses continuity well and does add detail to Gwen and George Stacy and gives us a rare chance to glimpse Jean DeWolff back in action. It’s so far proved to be an intriguing police/crime story. Where it falters is in it’s characterization and it’s relevance. I know I just said the book adds detail to Gwen and George but let me explain what I mean. This book doesn’t go into Gwen’s head, it fills in details we didn’t know about her. How and when did she meet Harry and Norman Osborn? When did her Dad get injured? Who was her boyfriend in high school? When did her mother die? Oh and I guess she cooked for her Dad which I always presumed but I guess it’s nice to have that confirmed.

And whilst it’s…nice I suppose to find this stuff out…it just doesn’t matter. At all. Whilst not as problematic, this book has one of the major problems Sins Past had. Sins Past actually made Gwen Stacy a better character retroactively (and also kind of a worse character but that’s another discussion). But there was simply no point in doing that. She was dead. She wasn’t coming back. Nobody wanted her to come back. Her role was defined  through the fact that she died and would always be like that so long as she remained dead. Sins Past in developing Gwen retroactively at least had a little bearing upon the then-present stories.

Gwen’s affair in theory could’ve been an emotional scar for Peter to bear and add an extra layer to his duels with the Goblin. Not that we needed anymore of those, but theoretically it could’ve served that purpose. This absolutely doesn’t. It doesn’t matter what Gwen was like before she met Peter because Peter himself never knew her back then. Fleshing out MJ in this manner or Mysterio or even the Shocker would hold relevance because those characters appear alive in the present, they interact with Spider-Man. Similarly Untold Tales of Spider-Man gave Peter more villains he could duel in the future, plug in plot holes of his continuous narrative and flesh him out a bit more. That matters because again…he’s not dead.  Even fleshing out Uncle Ben could possibly have a purpose as he’s Peter’s role model and enduring motivation. Peter strives to be Ben as a man so knowing who Ben Parker the man was can add substance to those moments. But knowing when George Stacy injured his leg or that Gwen ran for class President just doesn’t. It retroactively adds slightly more substance to like 3 issues from 1971. Maybe that’d be an okay back-up story…but a solo-title dedicated to that shit? It’s just pointless, there is no creatively justifiable reason for it to exist.

And that’s before you get to the problem of characterization. As I expected, Gage’s Gwen is total revisionism of the character. Maybe no one is explicitly putting her on a pedestal but literally the only people who don’t think she’s wholly likable are two creepy football players and the explicit villains of the story. Gwen herself beyond this is flawless. Even things we might argue as flaws (her endangering of herself and her friends) is never framed as a flaw, but instead a mark of her bravery and her desire to seek out justice.

It doesn’t help that this is a comic obviously made by and for the Cult of Gwen that never needed to be fed anything else at this point. Their precious Martyr Princess is the star of her own title, she is the super hero in it, the guy she died to motivate instead died to motivate her. Then that version got to appear in 2 cartoons and a movie. THEY WON already, what more do they really need? So whilst the plot is good, the characterization has problems and just on principle the book shouldn’t exist.

Ghost-Spider is similar yet different, ironically mirroring the protagonists of the titles. Ghost-Spider in concept was always very strong. I never disagreed with the title existing. It’s just that Latour and Maguire’s execution is problem riddled. Continuity and characterization is borked. And the current status quo moronic. Gwen visits 616 for school…why? How is that relevant? How is anything she learns going to qualify her for a job in her universe. Even if the skills are practical there would never be any proof of her qualifications, no records. And that’s not even considering how a character who doesn’t goddam live in 616 is embroiled in a 616 event crossover.

Finally there is Amazing Mary Jane. I’ve spoken far too much about this title. I never had a problem with this as a mini-series…but as an ongoing it removes MJ from Peter’s narrative which is asinine. Why remove the best supporting character from Peter’s story? It’s not like she didn’t have subplots of her own when that wasn’t the case. So on principle this shouldn’t have been an ongoing. And in terms of execution…holy shit.

It’s aggressively bad. The plot is nonsense. The characterization is inconsistent within itself let alone when you consider the history of the characters. The best way I can sum this up is that issue #6 is about MJ going into witness protection because she’s a valuable witness to a murder case…where the guy wore a mask…so she couldn’t ID him no matter what…And the guy knows  that.

It’s just so bad I want this book to be put out of it’s misery.

What upsets me most is that Marvel CLEARLY put more effort into Gwen’s solo than MJ’s or Felicia’s. The superior characters get less effort (and one of them gets a far worse title) than the worse character who instead gets more effort and 2 titles just to herself.

I can do that, especially in light of it being Spideytorch week. (I can even tie it into the first two days of @spideytorchweek‘s themes because I’m brilliant like that.)  If you’re coming from a mostly MCU background, what you need to know about Spider-Man comics is that, by in large, they’re a very different animal, especially in terms of Peter’s personality and supporting cast. Unlike in the MCU, he doesn’t have a best friend in high school – there is a Ned Leeds in comics, but he’s a reporter for the Bugle who functions as Peter’s rival for the affections of his first girlfriend, Bugle secretary Betty Brant, and Peter wouldn’t meet Harry Osborn or become friends with Flash Thompson until he entered college. If Peter does have a male friend he’s close to during this point, for the relative value of “friend”, it’s Johnny Storm.

Peter and Johnny first meet in the very first issue of Amazing Spider-Man. This is partially because the Fantastic Four’s brief appearance in the issue were used promote this new superhero book. One thing you have to understand at this point is that the Fantastic Four were wildly popular at their debut, and featuring them in the first solo Spider-Man story was a surefire way to get people to pick up the book. What this ending up cementing was a long and storied in-universe connection between Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. Peter’s served as an Avenger in 616, but he’s family to the Fantastic Four. 

Not that Peter and Johnny got along at first.

(Strange Tales Annual #2) There was some pretty extreme pigtail pulling going on at first from Peter towards Johnny.

This is one of the premier friendships – developing at this point as it is – in Marvel comics. It basically predates all of the other big ones: Captain America and Iron Man, Luke Cage and Danny Rand, any other big Spider-Man friendship. This came first. There’s a lot of reasons for that – team ups between the Human Torch, who at this point was big enough to have his own run on Strange Tales in addition to the Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man, an instant hit with fans, was good for the sales on both books, and the relationship made sense and was organic because both characters were teenagers who were the same age, who had gained powers in fantastic accidents, and who both had personalities suited to a banter-filled rapport filled with fun bickering.

In spite or maybe because of that early bickering, though, it quickly becomes apparent that Johnny really respects and admires Spider-Man:

Peter Parker, on the other hand, who Johnny’s at the time girlfriend Dorrie Evans thinks is just so polite and gentlemanly? Peter Parker, Johnny doesn’t like so much at this point.

(Amazing Spider-Man #21) And here we have the beginning of our identity porn, practically a staple when it comes to superhero ships. This kind of dynamic between Johnny and Spider-Man/Peter Parker would continue up until Peter revealed his identity to Johnny in the middle of a crisis, having to silently trust him to understand:

So you’ve got this amazingly long history, and from the beginning the shippy tropes are piling on – Johnny saying he could understand if his girlfriend fell for Spider-Man, Peter and Johnny having their own special meeting place, and then there’s the fact that Johnny gets kidnapped to use as bait for Spider-Man:

Fast forward a bit. After the death of Gwen Stacy, who Peter was very much in love with and who he was seriously talking about marriage with, Peter unsurprisingly falls into a dark mood. One of the bright spots for him? Building the Spider-Mobile, which he’d been hired by an automotive company to drive, with Johnny:

In an updated version of this story in Spider-Man/Human Torch #3 (they even had their own team up comic!), Peter speaks to Gwen’s ghost-slash-memory, and says that when he’s with Johnny he feels like he’s “her” Peter again, the best version of himself:

“And for the first time in a long time, it doesn’t feel like I’m putting on act, or going through the motions. Suddenly, I’m Spidey again. No, I’m Peter again. Your Peter.” Considering Peter was head over heels in love with Gwen and planned to spend the rest of his life with her, that’s one hell of a romantic statement.

Couple this with the fact that, in and out of the mask, Johnny’s consistently one of the best people at calming Peter down and making him take a step back. That might not sound too impressive if you’re not familiar with comics Peter, but in comics, when he’s angry and upset, he has a tendency to verbally lash out at people he loves and isolate himself. It’s generally not a good idea to get in the middle of one of his fights, either – think like inserting yourself into the fight when your dog’s trying to fight another dog. Your dog might love you, but there’s still a very good chance you’re gonna get bit. Johnny’s success record here is unmatched.

Then there’s the fact that Peter clearly feels protective of Johnny. (Though, to be fair, 616 Peter feels very protective about everyone he loves.) When Johnny lost his powers and was on a self-destructive bender, Peter teamed up with Johnny’s other best friend, Wyatt Wingfoot, to snap him out of it:

(Fantastic Four v5 #12) Look at that hand on Johnny’s stomach, steadying him on the building’s ledge. Also look how pretty Johnny is – the real question is, why isn’t he shipped more?

Peter also spent served as Johnny’s personal taxi afterwards:

When the Red Skull recently possessed Johnny and failed to make Johnny hurt his teammates, he taunted Peter by threatening to kill Johnny in front of him, a threat to which Peter violently reacted:

So there you have your hurt/comfort, the second trope at play here. (Also, Johnny is a champion damsel of the Marvel universe. I once tried to average out how much he faints and came out with something like 1 out of every 3 issues in the early Fantastic Four days. If you like your hurt/comfort, Johnny Storm is right here, collapsing all the time and getting kidnapped by giant gorillas at least three, one time of which – Amazing Spider-Man Annual #4 – Peter has to save him.)

There’s a million other factors that play into “reasons why I ship them” here – they canonically consider themselves family. They have an established tradition to meet up every Christmas morning at the Statue of Liberty. When Johnny died (he got better) he left a video will instructing that his place on the team be left to Peter and saying that “we all love you”:

They lived together when Johnny was recovered alive for a short period of time, during which Johnny cooked Peter breakfast in nothing but his underwear and a saucy apron, yes, really:

(FF #17 – there are word bubbles here in the finished issue, but they just distract from the rest of this, honestly.) And when Johnny’s family disappeared and Peter found himself unexpectedly a millionaire (long story), he bought the Baxter Building to keep it safe for Johnny. They’ve mentioned having movie nights in canon. Whether or not anyone ships them, it’s hard to deny in canon that they love each other, and that they have a bond forged over decades and decades worth of canon. They’re incredibly close, to the point where, when Peter’s identity was wiped from the minds of just about everyone on the planet, Johnny was one of the few people (along with Felicia Hardy, Peter’s ex-girlfriend) who knew that he used to know who Spider-Man was, and the loss of that knowledge hurt him deeply. They’ve fought together, they’ve saved each other lives, they’ve celebrated holidays together, and they’ve propped each other when the other needed it. It’s a ship with so much history it’s honestly hard to sum them up quickly or efficiently – honestly, they have more history and more reasons to ship them than, I would say, at least 80% of other popular ships and I mean ships in general, not just Marvel ships. It’s pretty amazing to have a relationship in canon that has endured the test of so many years and still remained incredibly relevant to each character. Keep Dylan Brock away from Miles

I don’t hate Dylan Brock. I think the idea of a kid who hates Spider-Man but loves Venom to be fun. I like how he is and honestly, I have nothing against him except how he was born but again, that is not on his character.

Just keep him away from Miles.

Now the Spidey-Office(which Venom is apart of. don’t get it twisted) has been pushing legacies of everything Spider-Man. Of course there is Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. Those are the obvious ones. Then you have Starling.

Tiana Toomes. Granddaughter of Adrian Toomes and arch enemy of Tombstone. She has been sort of Miles’ Black Cat except she is just a more ruthless anti-hero than she is just bad.

Spider-Zero who is essentially Madame Web.

Her job is to watch over the Web of Life. She goes as far to say that after the first one was destroyed, the new one needs to be taken care of by the new Spider-people i.e. not Peter Parker Spider-people.

Kraven’s son or clone of Kraven.

Who looks exactly like Kraven but without the suicidal tendencies. Kraven killed himself again after yet another Hunt, but this time he had the decency to pass on his legacy to his son.

Ana Kravinoff, Kraven’s Inhuman and self-renounced daughter.

Billy Connors or Billy Connors’ clone since the Lizard ate his son and had to clone him because Slott said whoops.

And Normie Osborn who was already taken over by the Carnage Symbiote. And he is the grandson of Norman Osborn, son of Harry and Liz Allen. He is the heir to Alchemax. And he is essentially Norman Osborn Jr.

And mark my words. There probably will be some girl or boy or someone coming out of that Black Cat book who Felicia is going to mentor or some shit. Superior Spider-Man appears to be ending soon and that conclusion seems to be that classic Otto is back.

Now you may think I am tripping but this has been accross 4 different books in under a year. And within that year, Dylan was created. And then all of the sudden Sleeper shows up. And both Dylan and Miles get roped in Absolute Carnage together. In fact, Miles was literally only solo other character outside of Eddie’s Venom that has been involved with Absolute Carnage for three issues. Everyone else has given the issue only 1 even fucking Amazing Spider-Man.

And I will be real with Venom fans. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that, in a period where there is no way Anne and Eddie could have had sex, Dylan was conceived through dubious means such as giving birth via Symbiote bonding. Cates created Dylan for a reason. Cates was the only writer who featured Miles Morales after Bendis left Marvel and his last issue with the character ended until Miles own book came about. That Dylan is around the age of Miles just like Normie just like Billie and just like Tiana. Mayday or Annie May ain’t even the twinkle in Peter’s eye yet in Marvel 616 yet. Miles getting transported to 616 in a rather crude way. And suddenly the majority of Spider-Man’s rogues start having kids around his age and shit or their kids have powers or are in positions to have powers?

Billy has been in Spider-Man for as long as his father and now he gets his father’s Lizard powers? Normie was created over 30 years ago and now he suddenly starts being crucial to the storyline? Kraven has always been...fruitful but now he suddenly has two heirs to his name that would look at Miles and say it’s destiny or some shit. Dylan’s hamfisted origin turns to a writer just quickly and hastily trying to create an foil to Miles with a ‘here, Eddie for no logical reason has a kid too.’ Then you suddenly bring in the other symbiote child of Venom and Eddie that isn’t evil? Vulture now has a granddaughter and as soon as the Web of Life is destroyed, there is a new one with a new watcher? Naw. Spidey-office, this is not a coincidence. It is purposeful.

The Not-So-Amazing Mary Jane Part 35: AMJ #6.2

Much as we did for AMJ #4 we will be turning this issue into a three parter. This is because the next page we will cover has a Hell of a lot to unpack. As always, if you want the full context read the previous post.

MJ’s mental rehearsal continues, with her imagining Peter’s questions and the answers she plans on giving.

Why didn’t she call Peter? Because she couldn’t get to her phone safely

Why didn’t she scream for help/aren’t there security guars on set? Because she was the only one being pursued.

MJ plans to pause for dramatic effect and say (with enough conviction that Peter would have  to understand): “I’d just seen this guy kill someone. Who knows what else he was capable of? I didn’t want to endanger anyone else by making them my shield. Especially since this guy was intent on following me and only me out of the building.”

Whilst MJ is going through this in her head she is shocked and scared at the sight of Oni. Oni reaches into his jacket (seemingly for a gun). MJ’ facial expression changes (I don’t really know what it’s trying to convey) and she smashes a fire alarm. Oni pulls his hand out of his jacket revealing nothing but his hand in a gun pose. Behind him the audiences rushes out in a panic.

Okay, the storytelling between the art and captions is actually very well executed here. If this was an original character rather than Mary Jane, someone who was perhaps characterized as brash, impulsive (possibly self-destructive), then this page would actually be really cool.

I appreciate how the art and dialogue marry up together creating irony and a contrast to what is happening. The framing of Oni and the ‘lighting’ (for lack of a better word) are also excellent as is the pacing and ‘rhythm’ of the page. It’s just executed very well.

Too bad MJ isn’t an original character and the context ruins the page.

Not only is MJ planning on deliberately lying to Peter but going to extra lengths to do it. It’s not just the one lie it’s several about her being in danger and unnecessarily. The worst part is the ‘I will say with enough conviction that my….boyfriend has  to understand…’ It’s just so underhanded and exploitative, its MJ planning on in a sense tricking Peter into believing her lies.

And I do not know why.

Why  is she planning to lie to him about this at all? Is she so egotistical that she can’t admit she made a mistake? Has she or is she planning on always lying to Peter about pursuing crooks herself?

I just do not understand the need for MJ to lie to Peter about this. Yes it will upset him but surely she knows he’ll get over it. Even if it’s just to save her some kind of hassle with him later surely she knows lying is just generally bad for a relationship, especially over something as serious as this. Peter doesn’t lie to her about being Spider-Man or the risks that entails for God’s sake.

This isn’t even connected to the Mysterio thing. This is just an extra pack of lies about an essentially unrelated event.

The most grating aspect of the page is that MJ recognizes the obvious questions and the obvious reasons she should have done something different. Which means Williams does too. Williams knows there were other more reasonable options for Mary Jane to have taken but has chosen for her to not take them.

And let’s dig into those options shall we.

She could have called Spidey. She is planning on lying about her phone being out of safe reach. Except it wasn’t.

She could’ve screamed for help or screamed about the murder. She could’ve gotten the security guards to help her. She plans to claim she was the only one being pursued. She wasn’t, the guy was leaving and she  pursued him. He isn’t even pursuing her on this  page.

Even if she was the only one being pursued she still could’ve gotten security guards involved. Putting aside the fact that that’s their job, this guy is seemingly not a super human. If he was why is he walking away, keeping to the shadows and using a weapon to strangle his victim. If he had enhanced strength he’d not need that. Therefore there is no evidence to suggest this man couldn’t be stopped by several burly guys or a bullet. After all, even in New York city the number of regular human criminals outnumber the costumed criminals.

And yes, this guy is seemingly a cold-blooded killer so MJ couldn’t be sure what else he was capable of. But if this chat show hosts celebrity guests then surely the security services have provisions in place to protect them? They are celebrities, there are always going to be one or two lunatics who might take things too far. So provided they aren’t incompetent the security guards should  be armed and prepared to deal with a normal non-powered person at the very least, even an armed one and a cold blooded killer. In fact I’d have thought a crazed and armed celebrity stalker would be far less predictable than a sane and rationale killer.

Also, MJ’s point about not knowing what Oni is capable of applies to her. She  doesn’t know what the man is capable of beyond obviously being willing and able to kill; we’ll come back to that in a moment.

MJ final point on this page regards not wanting to make other people her shield, especially since he was just after her. Again he wasn’t. In fact her pursuit of him wound up endangering more people. Not by accident either, she  deliberately put them in danger by triggering the fire alarm.

That’s aggressively out of character for Mary Jane. Risk the lives of innocent people to save her own skin? Get fucked, Mary Jane would never do that. I can’t say I’m surprised. MJ’s moral compass has been utterly broken throughout this series. She’s been mind bogglingly selfish throughout this series.

You know when I wrote part 16, I was only thinking about MJ prioritizing her career over other people. I honestly never expected that I’d have to point out that she’d obviously not use other people as her shield.

There is an element of good craftsmanship to that moment though. The juxtaposition between what MJ is doing and the rehearsal dialogue MJ is running through in her head. As a moment intended to deliver irony it works magnificently. It just isn’t something Mary Jane would ever do. Oh, unless it was six villains and they were threatening the movie.

I guess in this series MJ’s priorities are:

Mysterio’s dream film project/Mysterio’s ‘redemption’/The employment of current super villains/Her career/Her life

Her relationship with Peter/the lives of innocent people

In that order.

Why do people sill laud this series again?

Anyway, MJ’s point about not wanting to use people as shields doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Not just because that is literally what she is doing on this page. Not just because she basically did that last issue when the cast and crew battled the Savage Six for her. Not just because Mysterio battled them in issue #3.

But MJ has sought the help of others countless times before.

In part 20 I recounted several instances of MJ getting assists to save her self. Whilst some of those instances entailed help finding her, others involved her actively seeking help. In ASM #261 she asked Harry about Peter as she wanted Spider-Man to come help them. She asked Spidey to help rescue her and Liz from the fire in the same issue.

In part 17 I also pointed out that Mary Jane sought assistance from the police, body guards and Peter to deal with her stalker. In that instalment I also went over the time she encouraged Peter to go out and deal with a gangland shoot out going on. Obviously MJ was not in any direct danger there but wouldn’t asking Peter for help qualify as looking to him to protect innocent people, as MJ is herself was (allegedly) trying to do by pursing Oni?

There are numerous other instances where MJ has looked to others to help her in times of peril or when innocent people are in danger. 

When Smythe abducted her in ASM Annual #19 she tried to get the attention of Peter or the authorities.

In Web #49 to Peter to sort out Lorraine’s drug dealer?

In ASm #317 she suggested calling in the marines when Venom was on the loose again.

In MKSM #11 she called S.H.I.E.L.D. to save Peter and Felicia from she (correctly) presumed would be a trap.

Or how about Spec #228 where a pregnant MJ was pursued by a mind controlled Peter bent on killing her? In that issue Mary Jane sought the help of the New Warriors and Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider who acted as a shield between her and Peter.

No matter how you slice it, if MJ is in danger or thinks others are, she is more than willing to seek assistance from people who’s job it is to protect others. Shit, how many times has MJ suggested other heroes or the police could save the day instead of Spider-Man?

These do not mark her out as a weak coward. If you know your limits and can reasonably assess danger then often you serve the greater good by seeking the assistance of others. Sometimes serving the greater good means handing over responsibility to them if they are better qualified.

Spider-Man himself has sought help from other heroes when he feels outgunned on countless occasions. One of the most recent (as of this writing) occurred in FNSM v2 #12-13 where Peter asked the F4 to help him.

It’s all about scale. I went over this in parts 19-22, but MJ is not a super hero. She’s just a very capable civilian. But a capable civilian is still not on the same level as a very capable trained cop or trained security officer, someone who knows what they are doing with a gun basically. She’s probably more resourceful than those people, but her resourcefulness boils down to luck. She needs the right resources around her to exploit. Hence why her only course of action on this page was to create dozens of human shields.

Noticeably she was scared and unprepared deal with him one-on-one. Like what the fuck did she think was going to happen when she caught up with him. Her apprehension seemed at it’s worst when he was seemingly pulling out a gun and…yeah. What would  she have done if he was armed.

Look back at the prior page. The distance between them would’ve been too great for her to have knocked the gun out of his hand or even attack him hand to hand. The pacing of the panels on this page make it clear that Oni would’ve had ample opportunity to have shot her if he wanted, even after MJ hit the alarm.

You could argue that her distraction worked because he wouldn’t have dared kill her with so many witnesses. That is to say he might’ve refrained from pulling a gun specifically because MJ hit the alarm. Or maybe you could argue if he had pulled a gun he wouldn’t have fired because of the witnesses.

The problem there being that he apparently wasn’t that fussed about witnesses because he knew MJ saw him but was leaving. And again, he’s wearing a mask! So what if people identify him. People know Spider-Man is guilty of countless property damage and other acts of vigilantism. It doesn’t matter because he wears a mask. Obviously he doesn’t want to be framed for a more serious crime like murder, but he’s on the side of the angels. Oni clearly isn’t and clearly doesn’t care to be. Not only because he just murdered someone but because he is literally dressed as a demon!

His decision to wear a mask like that at all actually destroys the idea that he is particularly worried about being spotted. From a realistic stand point no one would wear something so garish unless they wanted to be spotted. Super villains often want attention and have big egos, hence the flashy costumes. If this guy’s job was to be a shadowy assassin who kills with no witnesses why wear a bright red mask (which is specifically how MJ spotted him btw) with big impractical horns on it. I’m not saying this guy is actively trying to get noticed, but he clearly wouldn’t care about witnesses because his disguise is highly attention grabbing. Look how nonchalant he is amidst the crowd on this very page? If he really did want to just get in and get out, no witnesses he’d never have worn that.

Oh well. At least MJ isn’t nonplussed like she was last issue…Hey wait a minute. Why isn’t Mary Jane nonplussed like last issue? She could hold her own against the Savage Six single handily but one guy in a scary mask and some garrotte rope and she’s intimidated?

How does that  make sense? I mean yes, it makes sense and is totally believable if you take this situation in isolation. But it this series isn’t consistent even with it’s own stupid ass rules!

headcanon. ( Harry )

*Small Reminder: My portrayal of Harry is strictly from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as I have not read any of the comics. So my headcanons will be based from my deductions from the movie, as a heads up!

It’s been obviously shown by several moments throughout the film and by mostly minute details, but Harry Osborn is an alcoholic. He started drinking while in boarding school, and from an early age had quickly learned to lean on the numbing of alcohol as a coping mechanism. It’s possible that his father had been tipped off about Harry’s addiction, as it’s very possible that he’s gotten into trouble at school because of it. ( Which makes his absent minded gift for Harry on his 16th birthday being a bottle of scotch even more cruel than initially thought. )

Despite appearances, he does not have a good handle on it. He drinks almost constantly; in his apartment after moving back to New York following the death of his father, his fridge is filled more with alcohol than it is with basic necessities. And as he grows more stressed with his position as a CEO and finding the cure for his progressing illness, he keeps at least a bottle or two of Scotch and/or Whiskey in his own office.

He’s not shy about this issue, having been shown to drink in front of Felicia during one of his more stressful and vulnerable moments; while also keeping his apartment a mess. ( Mostly with take out and pizza boxes and empty bottles of alcohol. ) He is careful, however, on not drinking in front of the executives of his company or his employees in general, knowing it will be used against him.

According to him, he doesn’t have an addiction though. It’s just normal-- it’s how he de-stresses; how he copes, and even if he’s killing himself faster he can’t see the harm in what he’s doing himself. All Harry knows is that it helps with sedate his own demons and dark thoughts, so he’ll continue as he sees fit.
