10. Most disliked arc? Why?

I don't particularly dislike arcs actively cause I jsut accept what comes in the way. But Hurt locker pt. 1 plot where Sue is showing all her obsession on Klaine is nauseating. I literally felt like puking and I never watched it. Hurt locker pt.2? I liked. Also instead of introducing Myron, I hope the double wedding couples had a honeymoon epsiode. Atleast a half of episode.

11.Is there any unpopular character that you like that the fandom doens't like?

Puck maybe? I really like him. He tried to imporve himself as much as he can. I know what the actor did was disgusting. But I have no problem separating both of them.

25. How would you end XXX?

Hope you are asking about Klaine. I would have married Klaine at the end of S5 or in the epilogue. They have a separate fabulous gay wedding.

4. do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?*

these days, definitely leaning that way for both kat*aang and ma*iko. i started off far more neutral, if critical, but it’s one of those things where i’ve only gotten more negative feelings about them due to the culture surrounding (at least the loudest parts of) the fandoms. i would say both ships are pretty popular in general, but it’s all relative—neither is super popular in the circles i’m most familiar with/active in.

10. most disliked arc? why?

aang’s arc in the book three in general, but particularly how his pacifism and ultimate handling of ozai is handled. i’m not saying he had to kill him, but i wish it had been handled differently in many ways. i wish it was a question that came up a lot sooner than it did, for one thing—the absolute latest it should have been introduced is day of black sun. and people can argue it’s not true, but i maintain there’s an argument being made about moral purity and corruption in the finale that i wish has been handled with far more car and nuance. and i wish that aang didn’t just get the answers handed to him—that he actually mastered the avatar state as part of his arc through book three, rather than having a rock conveniently hit him in just the right spot, and that energy bending was something he’d actually had to work for so the pay-off was more satisfying.

21. what are your thoughts on crackships?

i like ‘em! i don’t tend to seek them out because what i enjoy most about shipping is exploring dynamics i’m already invested in in canon, but i absolutely understand the fun of them! love a good crackship manip, too.

one pet peeve is when people call something a crackship but they mean a rarepair, which i define differently. a rarepare is an underrated/underexplored dynamic, but one that’s based in canon—a crackship i generally define as two characters that barely or don’t know each other at all, or are for some reason so diametrically opposed in their roles in the story as to be amusing. so for example, ozai/the cabbage man would be a crackship. but katara/suki isn’t, they’re a rarepair, at least as i define them. and like… all crackships are rarepairs, but not all rarepairs are crackships, etc, etc.

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

Yes and yes because it's Buddie. 😉 I wouldn't necessarily have called them a NoTP before, but they never managed to convince me there's more than friendship between them, even before Tommy came into the picture. But now that Tommy has captured Buck's heart (and ours) and with everything that went down in fandom Buddie has turned into an outright NoTP for me.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

The BuckTommy breakup arc, obviously. It's so poorly done, it's so inconsistent with what we've seen before and it's completely pointless.

18. Does not shipping something ‘popular’ mean you’re in denial and/or biased?

In The Sarah Jane Adventures fandom? No. Overall Doctor Who fandom, yeah probably. But not this segment of the Whoniverse.

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?

Umm, maybe Sarah Jane/Maria and Sarah Jane/Alan. I don't think so? I haven't noticed much shipping talk for this fandom, but those ships through me on AO3.

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?

Okay, I still love Rani. But her attitude and the focus on her in later seasons can annoy me.

12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Well, this is from the original Series 5 plans. But I'm not sure how I feel about Sky being the Trickster's daughter. While in a way it works and in another it doesn't, much like Timeless Child arc in Doctor Who.

17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…

Alan and Maria wouldn't have left because of the job offer in America. In my fic, they will be staying but I haven't decided why. And even if they had, Maria would make a return and she and Rani would get to know each other and have an adventure. Even though I hate Luke leaving, he might still go to Oxford. I still need to read the unproduced episode details in magazines I bought before deciding if Sky's story will follow the same trajectory. UNIT would have more of a presence.

18. Does not shipping something ‘popular’ mean you’re in denial and/or biased?

No. I think the biggest SJA ship was Clani, which I loved. I haven't seen any complaints about them. Honestly, I shipped Luke/Maria because they had a strong bond and Luke/Sanjay came out of left field (plus we hadn't met Sanjay). I respect that RTD was asked to add an LGBTQ+ character by a BBC exec. As for Sarah Jane/Maria, I am creeped out by it. But people can ship whatever they want.

The fandom can't make up its mind on what's supposed to be a joke and what's supposed to be serious because the show can't either half the time. It's a tonally disjointed mess that wants to have absurd over-the-top humor as well as a plot and moments of drama, romance, and angst that demand you see the characters as people and feel for what they're going through. Except you can't do that without also treating the dumb bullshit in a somewhat grounded way. Like, you're still dealing with the same characters. You can't just go "Oh, that? Let's ignore that!" the moment it's no longer convenient to you. You've opened this can of worms and now you have to sleep in it. So, every character flip-flops between two different versions of themselves depending on what the writers need in any particular scene.

This is not to say surreal humor can't be used right alongside characters you're supposed to empathize with, Teen Titans (not Go) did that and it worked. It's just that the absurdity can only come from the setting (Mad Mod, Mother Mae-Eye, pretty much anything Control Freak is in) or from designated joke characters (Date With Destiny). Teen Titans never had the main characters acting in clearly absurd ways as the butt of a joke unless those characters were brainwashed somehow, because the writers knew that would ruin any of the more grounded moments they wanted to write. The writers of Miraculous missed the memo on that one.

I don't disagree. A perfect example is Derision where the show takes all of the bad jokes about Marinette's crush and decides to take them seriously as if you can possible take them seriously without making Marinette come across as unhinged and dangerous. You can't, which brings us to the topic at hand: how do you even begin to understand these characters when the show is constantly making character-breaking choices?

My approach - and the approach I recommend others take if they're going to keep watching the show - is to focus on the characters' cores and reject anything canon does to violate those cores. I don't argue for this stance because I love the characters so much that I only want the good things to count. I take this stance because, if you don't, then the characters fall apart. There is no way to make them work as fully realized characters while embracing every choice canon has made. Miraculous has massive characterization issues that go well beyond the humor.

For example, Adrien has multiple moments of terrible behavior that are played in a serious manner such as the moment in the episode Frozer where he tries to start a fight with Ladybug in the middle of an akuma attack because she wouldn't accept a rose from him earlier:

Ladybug: I can't accept this rose from you. I told you already. I'm in love with someone else. Cat Noir: I know, M'lady. But if he weren't here, would things be different between us? Ladybug: Well, you know, I can't even begin to imagine him not being here. I'm sorry, Cat Noir. I really gotta get going, and you better do the same. (Swings her yo-yo to head back home; Cat Noir is sad, looking downwards, with one petal of the rose falling.)

Payoff

Ladyice: Cat Noir. We need to set up a trap for whoever turned the city into a giant ice rink. (throws yo-yo) Icecat: (bitterly) My feline instincts prefer to track and observe before I attack. You go your way, I'll go mine. Ladyice: Please don't tell me you're mad at me about the rose. Icecat: There may be a certain chill now between us. Ladyice: I get it, but we should really focus on saving Paris right now. Icecat: We don't always have to do everything together, after all. It's not like we're a couple. (skates away)

There's no way to argue this off as a bad joke. While Adrien has every right to feel hurt, those feelings don't excuse him acting like a pouting child in the middle of an akuma fight. It doesn't excuse him acting like this at any point! Ladybug is not a villain for telling him no. She wasn't even mean about it!

I clearly fully agree that Adrien looks awful and selfish here, but I'd still argue that it's not something that should be used to define Adrien's character if your goal is to tell the "ideal" version of Miraculous. "Ideal" being the version that canon seems to be going for based on the overall picture we can sort of make out if we back way, way, way up and look at the extremely abstract picture canon is clumsily painting.

Unless canon is going to do something monumentally stupid, Adrien is Marinette's endgame romantic interest. It's also clear that there is no plan to cut him from the team. He's going to be Chat Noir for the rest of his life or at least well into his adulthood. This means that he is supposed to be a good hero who deserves his miraculous just like he's supposed to be a charming and cute romantic lead. These are the two things I keep in mind when trying to shift through canon to figure out what writing choices I should fully embrace and what writing choices I have to either ignore or treat as true flaws that get an actual character arc. In my book, either approach is fine because most of the characters are deeply flawed at this point and you can't give them all arcs without bloating the story to nonsense levels.

My goal with this approach is never to say, "oh, that moment shouldn't count in terms of how people feel about the character." It's more, "that moment goes so hard against who this character is very clearly supposed to be that I can't take it into account if I want to tell the kind of story that Miraculous is trying (and clearly failing) to tell."

As an example, let's list off Adrien's worst behaviors. The things that make him look terrible:

He sucks at communicating his needs and feelings, leading to multiple moments where he gets mad at Ladybug for things she's totally unaware of

He has quit or considered quitting without warning multiple times and only one of those was because of something he did "wrong" (NYC Special)

He puts his feelings before the safety of Paris on multiple occasions, even going so far to purposely miss akuma fights to see what happens

He is incredibly pushy about his crush, often ignoring Ladybug's feelings on the topic by continuing to bring it up even after she asked him to stop

There have been multiple instances where he almost cataclysmed multiple people in a fit of anger

His love for Ladynette isn't strong enough to let him break free of things like akumas and nightmare dust even when he's looking her in the eyes making him a pretty crappy romantic lead

People will argue that some of this behavior makes sense for his character because of the abuse that canon has technically introduced, but that the writers seem blissfully unaware of. I don't disagree with that argument, but that doesn't change the fact that none of this is acceptable behavior for a hero and Adrien is a hero who keeps doing these things. A sad backstory doesn't give you the right to behave poorly without consequences.

At the same time, if I fully embrace these elements of canon, what I get is an Adrien salt fic where he loses his miraculous for good while Marinette finds her real true love or even just a non-salty fic where Adrien leaves for his own meatal health and gets replaced by someone who can handle being a hero right now. Canon's not writing either of those, so the only way to engage with these flaws while enjoying canon or aiming for the same end goals as canon is to say, "I guess this doesn't count" or "I guess I need to tone this way down and work through it via a character arc" or even "I guess that was just a bad joke maybe?"

That is the essence of what I mean when I call myself a writing salt, character sugar blog. It comes from looking at canon and seeing that there's simply no way to embrace the worst moments and the best at the same time. We're not dealing with a coherent plot and/or complex characters. We're dealing with a nonsense plot that will warp the characters to bizarre shapes to make random ideas work even if those idea go wildly against canon's end goals.

As an example, Glaciator and Frozer should not exist in the same universe or, at the very least, something should explain why Chat Noir randomly changed his stance on Ladybug's crush from acceptance to pushiness. As is, the pieces don't fit together. The behavior is too contradictory. Remember, this is how Glaciator ends:

Perhaps Ladybug will love me someday. I mean, like, I love her. I have to believe. In the meantime, her friendship is the best gift of all.

Where did this version of Adrien go? Why did he regress in Frozer? There's no in-universe reason. It happened because the writers weren't ready to let the love square date or grow close, but they also wanted the love square to cause drama, so Adrien ends up looking terrible just like Marinette ends up looking terrible when it's her turn to cause love square drama. Her terribleness takes a different flavor so it can be hard to realize that this is a systemic issue, but that's what it is. It's deeply frustrating, but it also clearly stems from cheap writing and not quality characterization.

This is also why my stance is that canon as a whole only supports my Doyalistic core-character analysis style of approach. The writing is too poor quality to do Watsonian analysis where you embrace the full picture and try to put it all together. The closest I'll get to Watsonian analysis is pointing out how much the writing botches a Watsonian take by showing you all the way the writing contradicts itself, twisting into a nonsense pretzel of frustration where the payoffs never satisfy! (See the season four rant for an example or anything where I talked about Chloe's supposed damnation arc.)

There are even characters where canon is such a total mess that you can Doyalistically argue for two separate takes! Gabriel is a perfect example. He is all over the place and his ending was so poorly handled that you can make strong arguments for writing him as a cold-hearted villain or a sympathetic villain without the end result feeling like it spits in the face of canon because both takes maintain his one core element: villain.

That's the big thing I keep in mind when I look at the characters and the lore and the plots and try to come up with versions that the average fan would like. I don't think that there's one true version of any of these things, but I do feel comfortable saying that there are versions that will very clearly only appeal to people who are salty about a specific thing that canon did poorly. That's not who I want to appeal to in my adaptions, so while I'm not going to argue that those takes have no backing in canon, I will argue that those takes are not supported by canon as a whole. Embracing them requires you to take the worst parts of canon at face value while ignoring what canon is clearly trying to do with the overall story.

I get the appeal of that, but it's not fun for me because that approach feels like rolling around in the mud with the pigs. I don't want to sink to canon's level! I want to have fun! That's why I talk about how to make canon into its best self, not its worst self. If you want its worst self, just go watch the actual show. I will be shocked it if disappoints you.

1 (the character that everyone gets wrong): ok this one is tricky for me bc to some degree im cool with ooc-ish stuff on the case of like aus/personal interpretation/whatever AND i am actually someone who doesnt actually read a lot of fanfic and doesnt have tooooo many really strong feelings abt characters outside of phantom hourglass so this one i had to think abt for a bit for a character that i have strong enough feelings on and actually like. care and know how ppl popularly interpret them. i am a bit of a hater but its very specific haterism a lot of the time. so i don’t really have much of an answer for this? (except to say im a bit put off by ww/ph link as like some hardened rough and tumble pirate type, that’s always felt off to me)

8 (common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about): shut up about linebeck committing tax fraud shut UP about linebeck and tax crimes he’s a THIEF like CANONICALLY textually theres a whole fucking subplot that’s caused by him being a THIEF BITCH. he recommends theft to link at least once. shut the FUCK up about fucking tax fraud. what you all want is that mob psycho cunt. burglary is a hotter crime anyways.

🧪 [1] What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I’ve seen some people pair Walt / Jesse and that’s so gross to me ‘cause there’s no level of compelling fanfic that’ll make me believe either of those dudes could be bi or gay or that either would be romantically or sexually interested in the other. It’s like trying to make Mettaton straight.  

I see them strictly as a toxic paternal relationship and nothing more. That’s where such fics and art portray them best.

I’d argue it’s the infantilization and woobification of Jesse which I’ve mentioned here. But it would also be the dismissal or hatred of the complexity of the female characters. Especially Skyler and, for some fucking reason, Kim. Although I do vibe with Kim more than Skyler.

Sukuna, your husband, was a menace to society to say the least. Not only because he was a dangerous, bordering on two meters tall, tattooed, muscular guard dog who's eyes would kill if they could, but also, because he was extremely judgemental.

Going outside with him was an actual nightmare. Always having critiques for everything. Food? Too salty. Drinks? Too watery. Places? Too dirty. Clothes? Too itchy. Everything in the world was fauled in his eyes. Specially people. The cashier at the store? Too slow. The waitress at a restaurant? Too ugly. That old lady standing at the bus stop? Too old.

But with you, with you it was entirely different.

Nothing you did could be wrong in his eyes. Of course you were perfect, after all you were none other than his wife. If he chose to marry you was because you were nothing short of perfect. Every part from your appearance to your personality was perfect in his eyes. And as such, his critical personality... softened.

And people tell you about it. His friends, your friends, your family. He was too critical of everyone, but you have never felt so. Not even when you were dating did you get a single complaint from his part... at least about yourself.

So you decide to test your theory. With a plate of deliberately salty pasta.

"It's perfect." He says while chewing, uninterestedly scrolling through his phone. And your jaw drops.

"It's salty." You say, palms clashing with the table, making it shake a little. And he takes another bite, staring right into your eyes, as if defying that claim.

"Is it now?" He asks, a satisfied grin over his face, canines showing as he chews, bites. "I think this might be one of the best dishes ever made."

"Sukuna!" You say, still in shock. And he chuckles.

"Sweetheart," He answers back, standing up, plate empty. He presses a kiss to the top of your head. "You'll have to try harder to drive me out of my mind."

what is this old thing you cant remember. a roblox dragon game ?

yeah i guess i should try and mention it here shouldnt i lol

preface that i dont think the game is going to be up anymore, but itd be so cool if it was! so, i approximate that it was sometime during 2014-2017 that i played this game. first off, it was a roleplaying game. it had the typical blocky-ish character models of the time, the generic terrain of the time (if you know, you know. i dont even know if those tools are still available in roblox game maker? probably are) and it even had a physical morph room with buttons you step on like roblox rp games tended to have (i think most rp games nowadays dont do that anymore?)

i have to say that this wasnt a wings of fire or wof fantribe game as far as im aware. it was similar in that the dragons were in different 'tribes' that were themed, but thats about as far as the similarities go, aside from them also having themed areas on the map to live in. yknow, snow area for ice dragons, dark rock volcano for fire dragons, etc.

now, an important thing is that i still have the list of the different dragon kinds! i wrote them down when i played it because i loved the idea of the game and i wanted to draw them and write about them and i genuinely dont know if i knew about wings of fire at this point or not. i also have descriptions, but those are less accurate because i dont know how much i changed the descriptions for my own reasons or not. i could say them if people wanted, but again, not the most accurate.

so heres the list of the dragon kinds. i want to believe i didnt add any, but i know for sure i didnt get rid of any.

i also believe that a few of them were behind whats known as a VIP area, AKA if people paid robux to the creator either for a badge, or some other way, and got access to a special room with special morphs. i want to say that the skeletal, plushie, maybe ocean and maybe pastel? were in there, but this is also if the game had a VIP room at all.

ive done several searches both on google and roblox itself to try and find this game, but nothing i saw was it or even very close. also, the roblox search function kinda sucks and most of the results are completely irrelevant games anyway.

i know for a fact its not role-play as a dragon by cutemooshi, and i know its not dragon life by shyfoox studios however i do wonder if maybe it was an old or early version of dragon life, but i doubt it. i wish i could ask the staff of shyfoox studios (is it just the one person?) but i dont know how i would lol

also note: i could swear during the tail end of my time playing it that the creator changed it kinda drastically? the issue is that i dont remember any changes because i stopped playing soon after, mainly because i didnt like the changes.

Getting a PHD literally anywhere else: Wow! Congratulations! What a great achievement! Amazing!

Getting a PHD in Gotham: Wow! Amazing! You're now on several Government, Civilian, and Bat watchlists.

So if any of the Wayne kids get a PHD, then the entirety of Gotham would be squinting at them suspiciously. They're rich, so resources, and most likely already insane with all the shit they pull.

What I'm saying is if Jason went and got himself a Doctorate in Literature, the whole city would anticipate the appearance of his villainsona called the Dead Poet(emphasis on the dead) or Bookkeeper or something else similarly nerdy and themed like that for sure.

I just know that it would turn into some Gotham inside joke with memes abound, and everytime Jason would, I don't know, give more funding to the neglected Arts Departments in Gotham University, or go to a school for read alongs to encourage kids to read, Gotham social media would go crazy and be like:

"The Dreaded Villain Dead Poet Reads Alice in Wonderland to Children! How Despicable!"

"Villain Dead Poet Lambasts Government on Banning Books! Leads Librarians to Riot!"

"Dead Poet Ramps up his Villainy by Establishing Educational Programmes in Crime Alley! Uplifting the Poor! What a Dastardly Villain!"

"Dead Poet Goes on Live Ranting About his Favourite Books! Favourite Author is Jane Austen! Is this the Feminist Agenda?"

And so on! It's a meme that refuses to go away. His siblings actively participate, and make the situation worse.

Dick held an online Gotham Villains and Anti-Heroes Poll and Dead Poet came out on top, over Red Hood. Jason is an actual Gotham crime boss, but his crowdfunded villainsona is more popular. No he's not salty about it at all.

Duke would create a montage of Dead Poet sightings.

Stephanie would make a Dead Poet meme compilation.

Tim would arrange Wayne Enterprises to donate to local libraries after allegedly being threatened by the heinous villain Dead Poet. (Jason did ask Tim to do that but not like that)

Barbara created an extremely popular Villain Watch account for Dead Poet.

Cass tweeted out Jason's favourite books as the villain Dead Poets reading list telling people to avoid them 'wink wonk', causing a massive uptick in the sale of those books ala Bigolas Dickolas.
