I've been rewatching elementary (2012)

obviously great show love it love it to bits ESPECIALLY how much of it is shot precisely on location but why did we invent a fake train/alternate timeline where the K wasn't discontinued in 1988 and also its iconography doesn't adhere to the exacting new york city transit authority graphics standards specifications

I just realized the absolute wait of El saying "maybe he's right" when Mike told her about Hopper.

That was a reveal. And it meant nothing to her. There is even a romantic trope of the situation they were in and they refused to do it. They could have drawn it out and had El find out at the end (although that would have antagonized Hopper) and that be the big romantic moment, but instead, she finds out in episode 4.

In season 3 episode 2, El breaks up with Mike because he avoided her then lied about it and she didn't know why. In season 3 episode 4, he tells her that the reason was because he didn't want Hopper to break them up...

And she didn't care. She didn't care! Like AT. ALL. Barely even acknowledged it. Then she said that since hanging out with Max, she had realized that him doing that was not the only issue in their relationship so solving that one doesn't solve anything and she was happy to stay single.

Uh.....DAMN. THEY LITERALLY DID THAT. If he had said what he said before she went to Max and that had somehow been the order, I think she would have taken him back. But instead, and instead of having a single conflict and solution, they used that conflict as an OPPORTUNITY, a starting point to jump off of for the next one. They wrapped it all up with that conversation in the first half of the season.

From there, the conflict was Mike telling El he loved her, something that was not the source of their breakup and therefore should not solve it, and El didn't really have a conflict pertaining to him as she was not seeking to initiate anything. Once he genuinely apologized, they got on good terms again and she was more willing to communicate with him about trusting her and allowing her to be independent now that Max had helped her realize that she wanted that.

But at the end of the day....they could have done a romantic angsty plot and didn't. Because that isn't what their arcs are. Instead, they said "yes, the breakup was for made up reasons, but once she was fully informed, she chose to stay broken up because although the original reason for the breakup was a miscommunication, she noticed that she had been happier since breaking up and that was more important."

I will never shut up about how season 3 grew on me as their friendship season and how, in connection to that, they made up about halfway through the season during the m&m scene (which was very downplayed ftr) and remained broken up for 3-4 more episodes.

Mike was trying to tell her he loved her but that was not the source of the breakup so it should not have solved it. Even if it had, he didn't anyways. And if it would have solved it, then why didn't she get back together with him immediately upon knowing? Or at least after a couple of days of him not being able to say it. You might all die again, especially you, there is at least some urgency to the situation. Why not make sure to get back together right before the big battle like Lum@x did in season 4?

And I will always remember the analysis about how her romantic moments with Mike coincide with her grieving Hopper. Here are the facts:

After finding out that the reason for their breakup was a miscommunication, she chose to stay broken up for other reasons she had since come to realize.

After making up and getting to a good place platonically, she did not initiate getting back together and neither did he.

After hearing him say he loved her, she did not initiate getting back together.

When he didn't work up the courage on his own, she did not bring it up to him in order to get back together

After her father died and she was moving across the country, big, jarring changes happening in her life, she initiated getting back together.

She had many an opportunity she did not take, initially directly denying the chance, but even after that seeming content with either getting back together if he initiated it or not if he didn't. That was always my interpretation from my first watch, that formulaically they probably would but she seemed content with either.

When introduced the option, she broke up with him. When given the full information and direct opportunity, she chose not to get back together with him for other, more credible reasons. After making up, when given indirect opportunity, she did not initiate getting back together with him.

tldr: They could have made a thing of it. They could have drawn it out. They could have made it big and romantic - like I thought they were going to when they introduced it in episode 1 as if it were the primary conflict. But they didn't. They said "yes, she broke up with him for faulty reasons, but that was just so she could realize how much she loves being single."

5. Honestly, I'd steal your number 5 bestie, 6Teen was great. In the spirit of obscure animated TV shows, though - and It's been so damn long I forgot the names of some characters, had to look up the guy's name, lol - Zero and Vin from The Invisible Network of Kids. It left a profound impact on my psyche because they did something really fucked up in the last episode, plus left us on a cliffhanger, and then the show got cancelled </3 rip. Haven't watched it in a decade or so. No idea if it holds up, but I was super invested in these kids doing spy work and experiencing insane levels of trauma that would be ignored come each new episode </3. I was literally 8 years old <3. It has a TV tropes page and the entire show is availible on the Internet Archive, of all places, sooooooo I may browse. For nostalgia's sake. There are literally zero gifs available for this one, because. I mean. No shit.

Plus, they both just ended up with much better canon ships (stalia, marrish) that then got shafted for this mess to be the endgame and then the movie breaks them up anyway!!! OFFSCREEN!!!! they didn't even last 2 weeks!!!! fuck!!!!!!!! I don't like them. But I used to. Playlist, for proof. I feel like this counts, because I shipped them when I first watched the show as it aired (I was 10 when the show started), but I did still ship the pairing until well into my teens (16 or so) before I wised up (the show made them very bad in a really boring way. Not that they weren't bad before. Love how they both do things that are otherwise reprehensible but the show frames them as romantic for some fucking reason </3 I was like 13 when I saw this kiss on screen. They're lucky I did research and didn't just take it at face value or I could've gotten some really bad ideas about what's healthy in a situation like this!).

Season 3 does not exist <3 [also, the way they wrote the 'cheating' plotline was fucked up. That woman planted one on him!!! he did not consent!!! Why are we supposed to be blaming him for being sexually harassed in the workplace!!! No!!!]. Still ship them fr fr.

Ignoring the horrendous movie adaptation, when I read the hp books I basically just defaulted to shipping whatever was canon. Luckily for me, the canon hp ships are actually pretty good ones! If you ignore the canaries in the room. (I. Do not. Famously. Well. Infamously.) As for Hinny, whilst its a garbage ship name, the pairing itself is pretty great <3

Shoker is a major missed opportunity in ME, and I've been mad about the choices for my fem!shep for YEARS because. Look. Kaiden she did not cheat on you. You left!! You accused her of being evil and fucked off after she was resurrected!! what else was she supposed to think other than 'guess he doesn't want to date me anymore. Rude.' And. You could have sex with Jack but not romance her, that was locked to male characters >:| biphobia [Jack can have sexual relations with women, but her only real connections are to men. Rude!]. And, Liara in my games always turned herself down for romance because she assumed my shep wanted to date Kaiden because she's not a total dick to him and there's no way for me to clarify otherwise, also people making assumptions :/ not great. Plus Li becomes the shadow broker and it's a whole thing, so that doesn't really work out narratively for me anyway. Can't romance Miranda. Can't romance Tali (wouldn't anyway - Tali/Garrus <3). Refuse to romance Garrus that is just so platonic a dynamic it's not even funny. Jacob cheats and dips, so fuck him. Like... all of the fem!shep romances are terrible (or Trainor, I guess, but she's... kind of. Nobody. She's Just There. Sorry. It's not narratively interesting enough for me.) and Joker was right there and augh. Augh! Still ship. Still mad about it. Hatboy Project is doing the lord's work! I salute thee soldier in thine endeavours. Waiting to replay LE until it's been finished <3.

Season 2 Ramble#10 - The Wind Down

This month my focus was on the slice of life genre, specifically the subgenre called iyashikei, which from Japanese to English roughly translates to healing

Been wanting to do an episode like this for a while now, firstly cause I've read a few before and they fr changed my life, really broadened my horizons on what manga as a storytelling medium has to offer,,, and that runs into the second reason I wanted to do this which is that often times I feel that the animanga community focuses too much on trying to read “heat”.... and even when a slice of life series does get in the limelight it's usually filled with drama of some sort.… so I wanted to bring the focus to/share my findings on the more exceptionally mundane things so to speak, finding peace, joy and contentment in normal day to day life

how this episode goes is:

usually I try to be very detailed with manga info like author, artist, chapter count, etc. but in the spirit of winding down I'm gonna keep it really simple, first up are 5 older reads ranked then after that reads from this month unranked but grouped by similarity. I also free balled the descriptions in the audio and here I'm gonna give very short and probably inaccurate summaries (my bad, it's the wind down ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯)

Lastly, the intended focus was on iyashikei or healing manga but not that many manga reading sites actually have the subgenre listed, it's all categorized as slice of life so some things in this list aren't exactly fully healing manga but they're all slice of life.

Sorta's CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Collection

Tons of notes under the cut

The Beatles Red and Blue albums are the 2023 remixed and expanded versions, not the 2010 remasters with practically the exact same packaging.

The Bad 25 case has been jammed since I got it in 2019, so despite it having a bonus disc inside, I've only ever been able to use the first disc. Yeah, that's nice.

I do have the slipcover on Echoes in a drawer, but not on the case because the case is kind of busted and can't fit it.

The tiny replacement case is for Running with Scissors by "Weird Al" Yankovic.

I don't actually have Rio or Surf's Up (at least not the discs anymore) but I'm using them as replacement cases for the Snow White 2001 cases, since that case wasn't in great shape. Prepare to see something like that a lot.

The Tangled DVD case has disc 1 of the Atlantis DVD due to a bad disc holder in that case (disc 2 isn't too bad though)

The copy of Iron Man on the third shelf was one I bought from a record store in 2020 that somehow didn't have the bonus Blu-Ray, but instead a DVD copy, and for some reason I didn't think to get a refund (it was the same visit actually when I got Echoes and its bad case).

I put the discs for the Steven Universe box set in those four clear cases due to how bad the sleeves were. However, I also keep the original Season 1 DVD there (which I got a couple years earlier in 2018) because the identical S1 discs in that specific box set might have been particularly ruined. (Now do you see why I want disc sleeves in box sets banned?)

I do have Angry Birds Toons S2, Vol. 1 on DVD, but due to, wait for it, another bad case, I have the disc in the Lion King 2011 Blu-Ray case, which conveniently was missing the DVD. (Same story actually for Finding Dory as I moved my Kirby's Dream Collection case into there from a bad GameStop case, although nowadays at least it's backed up through USB Loader GX.)

The Star Trek Compendium steelbook version on the 2nd shelf (which was also from that visit to that record store that I swear was way better than I'm making it out to be) was such a nightmare packaging-wise that I just ordered the case version of it.

The version of Star Trek Beyond I have is the Target 2-disc Blu-Ray, with the DVD thrown into the Snow White 2001 case.

The Cartoon Saloon box set's weird disc holders were bad (especially for Song of the Sea, which had to spend a few days after Christmas '21 in an empty Wii U case) so I have those 4 discs in a plain case.

The Arrested Development S1 DVD I bought in 2023 had a broken disc spindle, so the 3 discs are spread across an empty Minecraft Xbox case, a LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens PS4 case, and the actual case.

I also have a VERY old DVD of Batman (1989) via a Wii copy of LEGI Batman: The Videogame.

Ftr, I still haven't mentioned that I'll probably need replacement cases, for varying reasons, for Encanto, A Bug's Life, every 2018-present Pixar movie with 2 Blu-Ray discs, MCU Phase 3b (and 3a if I ever get that in 4K), Holy Grail Extraordinarily Deluxe edition, SpongeBob 100 Episodes, and especially del Toro's Pinocchio.

Tl;dr: my tastes might be a bit limited and weird and apparently making a reliable case is 100 times harder than you think. Viva La Disque!

Is there a link to an article that confirms 911 is getting 10 episodes for season 7?

Not yet, but going by what's left of the usual schedule once the show returns in March, if the show were to end around the same time in May, we're looking at 10 episodes. 11 only works if they get the extra week like they did with the s4 late start. And that's also assuming there'd be no week off at any point, btw. If the choice were between 10 and 11 episodes, I would bet that everyone agreed to the more "complete" number to match what was done in the inaugural season. Ftr: 10 episodes straight through would be the 16th of May, the same time frame as seasons 2, 3, 5, and 6. 11 is May 23rd. Season 4 ended on May 24th. What I can say is there is no room for a 13th episode because this show isn't going into June, lol. (Yep. I saw.)

Hi anon ✨ I’ve actually seen s5 being compared to s3 before, but in a vague way, not as succinctly articulated as your ask. 

If I may go off on a tangent, I’ve sometimes tinkered with writing some Skams fic (it didn’t go anywhere ftr) and what I’ve found is that the s3 structure just works really well. You could probably write dozens of possible Skams seasons with that structure, which is: 4 episode set up, main hits rock bottom on week 5, their views get challenged on week 8, then 2 weeks to wrap shit up. 

So like, if that’s the structure Skam France s5 had followed, it would’ve been very obviously based on the s3 structure, but I think it would’ve yielded a decent enough first original season. 

Anyway, I’ve spent so much time pondering just what went wrong with Arthur’s season, so I’m kind of envious that you managed to put it into, like, 2 sentences. 😂

2. if you could have saved one TV show from cancellation, which one would it be? my so-called life, like, a million times. it was the only prime-time drama that spoke to my existence at the time and losing it so soon affected my choice of media for years afterward. i’m still so bitter.

3. have you ever quit a show before it finished? why? i quit things like it's my job. fuck them if they're not entertaining me anymore. shits not worth it. the big one, which took me years, was elementary. i watched fewer eps per season until i realized i didn't wanna come back anymore. they just don't care about joan and marcus as much as i wish they did. (edit: i wrote this answer weeks ago just before leaving on vacation and now i have to admit i did watch the final three eps. they were okay. it was a good place to leave them.)

11. which TV show has the best musical soundtrack, in your opinion? this is limited to shows that i paid enough attention to that i got to know the soundtrack--very small sample size ftr--but skins had some great music. also steven universe is wooonderful.

i know it’s not the show’s fault netflix is forcing them to release weird batches of episodes. but OMG the result of that sure was a boring, listless s2 and an extremely tight s3 huh. s3 was awesome

it screws the pacing a bit... scorpia and catra for eg had an interesting arc across s2-3 but it would have worked better in one season

another unfortunate consequence is fans of other characters barely even saw them in s3... but... i dunno how to get around that. if it had been all one season like it was obviously designed, they would’ve had a decent amount of screentime to start. it wouldn’t have made sense to interrupt a tight 6-episode arc to shove in a filler episode

but the upswing was that there were six solid episodes and i wasn’t bored in any of them

i’m a casual enough fan that some of the lore gets lost on me, so like... definitely lost track of whatever’s going on with micah and shadow-weaver and all that backstory lol 

likewise i only kind-of remember what was up with mara, cutting of etheria? people thought it was bad? my main memory of it was that mara was a gay disaster for madam razz? but unlike with micah and shadow-weaver i’m super interested in it regardless lol. more mara!! my main disappointment in the finale was that adora saw her in the flesh (sorta) and they didn’t speak. i assume it will happen later but i wanted it nooooow

also she’s got the same va as amara in borderlands 3 lol

looking back i think i expected more from adora re: wanting to open the portal to go “home”. she very nobly immediately gave that up. i guess that’s why she’s the hero... but... would’ve been interested to see more conflict there. i assume it will return though w “hordak prime”

can’t honestly say i ever found angella anything other than tedious so... her sacrifice didn’t hit me. also as soon as glimmer in like ep 2 or whatever it was said “you’ll ALWAYS be there to lecture me”, or whatever, i was like oh she dead

sucks for glimmer though. and she’s absolutely definitely going to be manipulated and abused by shadowweaver before that whole thing wraps up. lol every time the “heroes” teleport in their Sinister Shadow Cloud i’m like hmmm totally innocent

that entire sequence with shadow weaver, where glimmer was half-in half-out of shadow, and eventually stepped fully into the shadow, was EXTREMELY on-the-nose directing ... but also should assuage the fears of anyone who thinks shadow weaver is totally our friend now and got a redemption arc while catra didn’t. shadow weaver is still awful and is gonna do something awful very soon. just wait.

“you made me this and now YOU get to be a good guy?” - the writers aren’t dumb, they know what this is, they’re not like, unknowingly redeeming the abuser first or whatever. it’s gonna be bad.

i mostly see a lot of handwringing in the tag about how catra is irredeemable now, she’s too far gone, unheard of!!, etc, and i don’t really think any of that is true. i still feel like this show couldn’t be telegraphing a redemption arc for catra more clearly if it tried, even before you take into account noelle stevenson’s general... like... body of work. 

same with catradora. it was inevitable that they reach a point where even adora has given up, and i think that is necessary for them to ever reach a point where they come back together. if catra’s going to be redeemed (which again i think is almost inevitable, much like shadow weaver inevitably betraying the rebellion), it needs to be because catra wants it, not because adora or even scorpia were nice to her a few times. adora making catra take responsibility for herself is important in the long run. it would be significantly less meaningful if, after being asked five times, on the sixth time of “run away with me” catra was just like “yeah aight” 

there’s supposed to be what, four seasons total, which netflix will probably split into eight? this is season 3 of 8? not even the halfway mark. of course catra’s got a long ways to go. she’s very close to rock bottom now (if not already there) without anyone -- including scorpia and adora -- looking out for her. i think that’s where we’ll see her for the next season or two before she starts to climb out of it

i mean if people wanna bail on the ship bc it’s too #problematic or w/e like fine (although i gotta lol @ the fandom deciding catra’s iredeemable now but loving entrapta and hordak) but if you’re worried bc you think the show just quashed your ship or doomed your fave to a life of evil misery.... i really don’t think that’s the case

My Top 10 Twelfth Doctor Stories

I’ve seen other people do this, so I decided to make my own Top 10 of Twelfth Doctor stories.

10. Flatline

I have a soft spot for stories in which the Doctor gets in a bit of a situation and putting him in a shrinking TARDIS was a hilarious plan. I have to admit, I wasn’t that fond of the episode when I first watched it, but to be quite honest, I love it a bit more with every rewatch. I think this really is one of those episodes that you have to watch a couple of times to really appreciate it. I’m also glad that the Boneless were picked up again in one of the comics because who doesn’t love a recurring monster? They were creepy, they were threatening and quite difficult to defeat - which the Doctor eventually did while giving an amazing speech. I think it was the first Twelfth Doctor speech that really struck me because of how fierce and powerful it was. And a cute bonus: Doctor Oswald. All of these things definitely put Flatline in my Top 10.

9. The Zygon Invasion / The Zygon Inversion

Another thing I love about Doctor Who? Kate Stewart! So it would be a shame not to include one of her stories in my Top 10. I have always preferred two-parters over single episodes because of that little heart attack causing “to be continued” thrill and these episodes do it quite brilliantly. The Zygons as monsters aren’t exactly my favourites, but they were really well used in this case. I really enjoyed the storyline and the many jokes that were put in the episodes (Why do you have a Union Jack parachute? - Camouflage. - Camouflage? - Yes, we’re in Britain.) There really are so many things I love about this two-parter: the Doctor’s emotional speech, Jenna marvellously playing two different characters, Kate tricking the Zygons, . . . The final product is a thrilling episode and wonderful entertainment.

8. Dark Water / Death in Heaven

The finale of S8 has to be on this list for one reason alone: Missy. Michelle Gomez really, really rocked that part and I will love her forever for it. I never really liked the Simm!Master because of various reasons (mainly cause his version of the Master collided with the version in a book I’ve read and loved). Yet the Twelfth Doctor and Missy really brought that “true friendship gone horribly wrong” part across. There was also the storyline of Clara losing Danny and later losing the Doctor by letting him go which I think shaped her S9 character to a large degree that I really, really love. The Cybermen were less creepy in this episode than in others (the S2 two-parter has scarred me forever), but this story wasn’t about the Cybermen or an invasion at all, at least it’s not how I see it. This two-parter is about loss and friendship. And it contains yet another Twelfth Doctor speech that I will love until the day I die. He’s my idiot with a box and a screwdriver. 

7. Oxygen

I feel obligated to put at least one episode from S10 on my list and since this was the only one that really stirred something in me, here we go. I loved the space station setting (because I’m a sad sci-fi nerd), I loved the dystopian “oxygen on sale” bit, but you know what I loved the most? The Doctor going blind. Oh my God, how I loved the big reveal in the end when he said he still couldn’t see. The Doctor is a Time Lord surrounded by humans, he is always superior to them simply because of the fact that he’s (like he said to Clara in FtR) “less breakable”, but finally, we get to see that he is breakable after all, that he’s vulnerable, that he’s no longer the superior hero. I love that bit. Sadly, the episodes that followed didn’t really put this plot twist to use in my opinion.

6. Mummy on the Orient Express

Who wouldn’t want to go on a trip on the space Orient Express with the Twelfth Doctor? This episode was beautiful from start to finish: the setting, the costumes, the dialogues, the storyline, the tension between the Doctor and Clara. Every moment of this episode was wonderful and a pure joy to watch. It was also a big turning point in the relationship between the (new) Doctor and Clara because, for the first time, she saw him for who he really was. Now, a couple of weeks ago I bought Doctor Who - The Complete History and I read about the making of this episode and I have to admit that I probably would have loved the original script (in which the Mummy is a life-extending body suit that won’t let people die and Clara briefly gets turned into one) a little bit more because it contains more sci-fi elements than the version they ended up using. But hey, I’m not complaining. The episode is awesome.

5. Into The Dalek

“I see into your soul, Doctor. I see beauty. I see divinity. I see hated.” Just hearing these words in my head gives me goosebumps and I think that is a very good sign that this episode definitely belongs in my Top 10. A lot of things have been done with Daleks over the past 50+ years, but miniaturizing the Doctor and putting him inside one is definitely one of the more brilliant ideas. I also really love the early version of the Twelfth Doctor, I love my grumpy, old alien and he’s at his peak in this one. But he’s also still struggling to find out if he is a good man or not and I really enjoyed that conflict that we saw in Peter’s first season. Rusty the Dalek plays a big part in that conflict and their dialogue makes me shiver even after watching it about 30 times.

4. The Magician’s Apprentice / The Witch’s Familiar 

The Doctor riding a tank into a medieval castle while playing the electric guitar! Do I need to say more? Yes, I’m definitely going to say more, but, oh my God, that was probably one of my favourite moments of the entire show. I sat in front of my telly, gawking at the screen. There will never be a season opened better than this. You won’t believe how much I enjoyed watching it the first time and how much I am still enjoying it every time I watch this episode. The rest of the two-parter is anything but a let-down. I loved the Twelfth Doctor/Missy interactions in this one because up until the end of the episodes you can really see the former friendship, you can see just how long they have known each other, how much they meant to each other back then (I live for this kind of thing). Also, bringing back Davros is always a nice touch. Bringing back Skaro was amazing (and seeing the fear in Missy’s eyes when she realized where she was). The Clara/Missy duo was amazing. The Doctor pleading for Clara’s life on his knees when he thinks he’s about to lose her. Honestly, there isn’t anything that I don’t love about this two-parter. Add “The Doctor’s Meditation” to this and you’ll get 10 minutes of pure, silly fun as well.

3. Listen

This episode was the one where I decided that Twelve was my Doctor. In fact, it was the pre-intro scenes with him that showed him sitting on the TARDIS roof and talking to himself by candlelight that got me. But that’s not why I loved the episode. It was properly creepy. I love the creepy episodes the most and sadly, there has been a bit of a lack in those in recent years, but Listen was definitely one of the best. I first watched the leaked black and white version and even then it gave me chills. This episode also showed how much of an impact Clara really had on the Doctor (apart from getting him to save Gallifrey and asking the Time Lords to help him). She saw him as a young, frightened boy and she put those thoughts in his head that would accompany him for the rest of his life. It was a wonderful, little twist. I also really enjoyed the fact that we never got to know what the monster actually was. I love that some people believe it’s a kid under a bedspread and some (like me, cause I’ve paused and seen a screenshot of what looked like Voldemort) think it was an actual monster. Whatever it was, I’m glad we never got the solution handed to us. That makes it even more interesting to me.

2. Under the Lake / Before the Flood

I don’t think I’ve said it enough, but this two-parter is actually perfect. Everything about it is perfect. The Doctor and Clara are at their peak, they’re having their “glory years”. It’s very likely that there was a large time span between TMA/TWF and this two-parter because we see them in full action, we see them incredibly bonded, we see them trust each other completely. This is the first time we see how intense their relationship actually is (“If you love me in any way, you’ll come back”, “I’m changing history to save Clara.”). They are the perfect TARDIS duo in this one, but we also get a sense of foreshadowing as to what is going to happen to Clara in the future. The minor characters in this story are all perfect as well, I can’t say a single bad word about them. I normally don’t care about minor characters because I’ve learned that many of them end up dead anyway, but in this one, I can’t help but feel for them as well. As for the storyline and plot twist, it was a two-parter full of exciting moments and surprises with a lot of laughs and emotions thrown in as well. And the Fisher King was a great monster. Perfect television entertainment for a Saturday night that almost ended up being Nr 1 on my list.

1. Heaven Sent / Hell Bent

Heaven Sent is, in my opinion, Steven Moffat’s masterpiece and always will be. It felt like he was working his way up from The Eleventh Hour to culminate in the S9 finale with two episodes that actually managed to blow my mind. I am very critical when I’m watching TV and I’m not so easily impressed, but Heaven Sent actually blew my mind. Heaven Sent, an episode that is longer than usual, that features only one actor in only a handful of rooms and it’s the best damn thing I have ever seen on TV. During S10 I often complained about seeing the “plot twist” coming, but this one took me completely by surprise and broke my heart in the process. Oh, the tears I’ve shed over Heaven Sent! It’s that moment the Doctor realizes what he’s doing, what he’s been doing and for how long that always breaks me and it’s underlined by the most perfect Murray Gold score I’ve ever heard. And of course the big reveal that Gallifrey was waiting on the other end. 

I think Heaven Sent / Hell Bent are the perfect depiction of the stages of grief in the Doctor’s 4.5 billion years quest to save Clara. And oh, how he did it! It’s not a secret that Clara has been my favourite companion from the moment she appeared on screen and after watching her become more and more like the Doctor over the course of the seasons, it was such a satisfaction to see her get her own TARDIS and run away. There is something so bitter-sweet, so emotional about this series finale and at the same time, it’s so full of twists and turns and surprises. It’s devastating and uplifting at once. In one word: perfect!

Gif 1-2: The Candidate's Wife Affair (S3), Diana Hyland as Irina. There is a lesson here for THRUSH, and that lesson is that if you’re going to replace an important figure with a brainwashed double, maybe see if you can find one who isn’t a professional Judo instructor -- or your plan might just backfire.

Gif 3-4: The Girls of Nazarone Affair (S1) Danica D'Hondt as Lucia Nazarone (and Kathy Kersh and Sharon Tate as two THRUSH agents). Nazarone herself is cheating slightly, as she’s had her metabolism hyped up by a healing serum, (her assistants from the second gif are merely relying on old fashioned strength in numbers). Gif 5-6: The Project Deephole Affair (S2) Barbara Bouchet as Narcissus. Though the staging is a little clunky, what I love about that second gif is that that ankle lock move she’s doing is a recognisably legit takedown move (and actually one of my instructor’s favourites). It may not be as showy as the judo-flips that were so popular in sixties TV, but  I can say from experience that when someone gets it right, it’s like having the rug pulled from under you.

Gif 7: Hey, remember that time in The Double Affair/The Spy With My Face (S1) where Napoleon nearly escapes his THRUSH captors, only to be knocked cold by a random woman in a two-piece bathing suit who has no other role in the scene? Yep, that happened. And people say S1 was less weird than the later seasons. (FTR, she does later reappear as a masseuse called Nina, played by Donna Michelle.)
