I can't believe my first proper post is a rent post. But it's bugging me for the past two weeks so have it.
I don't like Atsuhina. Everytime I see this ship my chest hurts, like physically hurts. I know it's because KageHina is close to my heart. But everytime I try to imagine Atsumu and Hinata as couple there is this nagging gut-feeling that they would break-up at some point in the future. And I don't like seeing haikyuu characters in pain. I want to spare them the trouble and heartbreak because I think both of them deserves good time after time-skip.
And why every other Atsuhina fic have Kageyama as Hinata's ex. I don't read any Atsuhina fic but I know this is like a given for them. My people can you spare him. I don't think Kageyama is the kind of a person who would ever fall out of love. Tobio is someone who feels a lot and is sensitive to people around him. We do not see it at first time around because he doesn't understand social cues.
I've said this before and I will keep saying it Kageyama Tobio would love his partner like he loves volleyball, with devotion. His love would be all-consuming, everlasting and forever until the day he dies. You won't see it in his face but that how he is. As someone who has been abandon before he would never let go of something that gives him Joy and peace. At his core he is a person who feels deeply and loves too much.
This is why I don't like exes to lovers tropes. It doesn't make sense in his case because of the way he is. And Atsuhina fics where he is the ex l can only imagine how heartbreaking it would be to look at him. Cause he would never fall out of love with the first person he fell in love with. It's as much a curse as it is blessing. And we don't put much faith in Hinata's ability to understand Kags without him having to say anything. He's the ultimate Kageyama translator. And Kageyama also understand when Hinata is hiding something or being anxious. They have some kind of psychic connection. Yes, they would fight but it will be their silly little thing like they're always been. It would never be serious enough to break them apart. Not even distance would have an effect on them (👈 this is canon.)
I know what the solution is. To stop looking at Atsuhina fics. But I'm not actively looking at it. Everytime I try to look for other characters ship fics in haikyuu fandom Atsuhina is in the background. For the last few days I try looking up good Ushisaku fics (l got UshiSaku fever cause of that one panel of Sakusa seeing Ushijima folding his handkerchief with wet part inside and having fun while playing volleyball opposite him.) and there is Atsuhina in back. 😑
I know that might be cause Sakusa is paired with Ushijima in it, so that left the Atsumu alone in his fan-favourite ship which leaves only Hinata as other option. But I can't look at them without physically being ill. For me every other characters can swap places in ships but not KageHina. Their my ultimate ship, at the centre of haikyuu fandom.
(This sounds more like I'm trying to convince people to stop liking Atsuhina fics. But all I'm trying to say is stop putting Kageyama as his ex. It's seems too much like a mischaracterization. And put Atsuhina in tags so people who don't like it can avoid it. Put proper tag of Miya Atsumu x Hinata Shouyou and not bg!Atsuhina. I can't filter it if you put half-assed tags.) 😤

the cast of the magnus archives is great I love them! I also despise most of them too
Like Tim Stoker. I love him, he’s my little guy, I sympathise with him. I also think he’s a massive prick and I’d more than willingly kick his ass
Daisy. I love her, she’s such a badass and I love her character arc. I just hate her guts at the same time. Maybe a little less since she’s one of the only characters to realize her shitty behavior sucks and actually owns up to it more or less.
Melanie. She’s so likable, I really empathise with her anger towards feeling trapped, she’s also quite a humorous character. I also hate how she takes her anger out on Jon for things he had literally no control over and would throw a vase at her.
Basira. Basira’s such an interesting character and I love her development and story throughout the entire podcast. She’s such a badass. She’s also an utter bitch that doesn’t get nearly enough shit for being absolutely awful to almost everyone around her (mainly Jon, Melanie, and Daisy). I have a deep hatred for her and if I ever met her I’d launch myself at her and try to rip her throat at with my own teeth.
Jonah. He’s so cool and amoral. He’s a truly fascinating character that’s hard to see as anything but just another human being albeit with dubious morals and a long lifespan. That being said, I’d also love to stab the shit out of him.
I love these characters and I also have a deep resentment towards them and I think that’s cool and that it shows how complex they are as characters.

My Thoughts on Sakura Haruno & Hinata Hyuga
I do like both characters, but, I'll never understand why some fans of Sakura hate on Hinata/why some fans of Hinata hate on Sakura, as well as other characters in the same series... I feel like, if you have the need to talk crap about another character in the same series to uplift your fave and to say they're so amazing, then they probably aren't...
Design wise they're both very cute characters. Personality wise, they both have their flaws, and that's okay...
Now... While I do like them, they do have their flaws.
Sakura:
She isn't the best of friends (and no I'm not talking about her betraying Ino when they were children, but that was mean). Her wanting a guy to call her so-called best friend ugly isn't a very nice thing to do; lying to Naruto about her feelings in an attempt to manipulate him into abandoning his desire to bring Sasuke home; drugging her friends/team and leaving them exposed, she basically put them in danger, in a foreign country, when she went to try to kill Sasuke. Constantly hitting Naruto, I hear it was a whole lot less in the manga, but still, hitting someone isn't comical, like during the Pein Arc.
When she gets the byakugō seal during the war arc, she insults Tsunade, saying she doesn't have to "waste" any chakra to maintain a youthful appearance. Like, Tsunade figured out how to maintain a youthful appearance using her chakra, something that, for the looks of it, no one else figured out or has bothered to do, so why is it bad that she does it, it's not like Tsunade is weak because of it, she is very strong while also using her chakra to maintain her appearance. To me it was just perfectly dreadful of Sakura to say such a thing about someone who invested their time in teaching her, helping her to get stronger and more skilful, while also being the Hokage and one of the three Legendary Sannin. Why try and shame Tsunade? I'll never understand.
She's not a great mother (Sasuke isn't a great father either, he prefers to spend time/teach Boruto than his own daughter, or is gone for 10+ years on a mission with no contact and that was shameful)... From not telling her daughter anything about the Uchiha Clan (since her dad is gone on a long mission (even though he could keep in contact with them)) (she didn't even know if her dad had the sharingan), to yelling at her and right after that, using her psychical power to break the ground underneath her, causing the house to break apart and collapse in the process, in order to silence her daughter for asking too many questions about Sakura and Sasuke's marriage.
Hinata:
She was a slave owner... The Hyuga Clan (main house) enslave other members of the clan (branch house) by placing a cursed seal on their foreheads (caged bird seal) that the main house can control, Neji got his on Hinata's third birthday. To "protect the byakugan from getting stolen" they say, meanwhile Ao has had a stolen byakugan since the Third Shinobi War
Taunting Neji during the Chunin Exams, telling him to be at peace (at peace with what exactly?) And telling him that he is the one that is suffering, more than her (who is no longer the heir to the Hyuga Clan)(I am not trying to diminish the pain Hinata has had to endure, because of her father. He sucks), because of their clan, but at least she acknowledged that it's him who is torn and suffers because of the clan dynamics. (Side note: Why did 4 Jōnin have to intervene during that fight anyways? Was 4 even necessary at all? And why did she go through with the fight to begin with? She knows, that if he hurts her, he will most likely get punished, just as we saw in Neji's flashbacks from when he was younger)
She never did anything to honor Neji's memory and sacrifice. And by that I mean, she never tried to reclaim her position as clan heir, in order to abolish the gross slavery her clan has placed the branch family in since before she was born. Nor did she talk to Hanabi/father about getting rid of the cursed seal forever. (And no, Hinata and Naruto's children not being subjected to the caged bird seal doesn't prove that it's not performed anymore, Hinata is a princess and member of the main house/former clan head's daughter and now sister of the clan head of the Hyuga Clan and Naruto is the Hero of the Village/The Kyūbi's Jinchūriki/Saved the whole world and also, now Hokage, why would their children be subjected to that...?) (I don't know if that putrid practice was banned, if it was, please do tell me where it says so, like manga or novel, so that I can read it)
I also wish they had both ended in a better relationship, with more a attentive, loving and present husband... Especially Sakura.

Tank Dempsey is....something else. While he is indeed my favorite CODZ character, it honestly sucks how little substance he actually got in comparison to every other character in the main squad.
Richtofe took up most of the spotlight (obviously), Takeo’s devotion to the emperor was deconstructed beautifully in Zetsubou no Shima and the real reason behind Ultimis Nikolai’s alcoholism was revealed in Gorod Krovi.
And Dempsey is just...Dempsey.
I mean, the ending cutscene in Der Eisendrache didn’t really reveal that much of him. Like, yeah, Dempsey is more reflective than he seems. But other than that, nothing in particular. Not even his real first name.

I love tumblr because it's a site where someone with an aesthetic blog and a username like lovelyswan will post "I hope you are all having a fantastic day and love yourselves no matter the circumstances." Then scroll down and see a post by someone with a fandom blog and a username like nocturnal-caffeine-junkie will post "I need to get dicked down by a femme girl."
These two are also very close mutuals.

PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!
regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!
regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.
gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!
no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!
Please Stop Spreading Misinformation About Drinks!!! It's fine if you drink things that aren't water!!!! Yes you should probably always be drinking water but drinking something else As Well isn't going to hurt you!!!! okay!!!! its fine!!!!!!
honestly so long as you are consistently getting Any (non-alcoholic) fluids in you, you're doing great!!!!!! okay!!!! i love you stay safe <3

the thing about art is that it was always supposed to be about us, about the human-ness of us, the impossible and beautiful reality that we (for centuries) have stood still, transfixed by music. that we can close our eyes and cry about the same book passage; the events of which aren't real and never happened. theatre in shakespeare's time was as real as it is now; we all laugh at the same cue (pursued by bear), separated hundreds of years apart.
three years ago my housemates were jamming outdoors, just messing around with their instruments, mostly just making noise. our neighbors - shy, cautious, a little sheepish - sat down and started playing. i don't really know how it happened; i was somehow in charge of dancing, barefoot and laughing - but i looked up, and our yard was full of people. kids stacked on the shoulders of parents. old couples holding hands. someone had brought sidewalk chalk; our front walk became a riot of color. someone ran in with a flute and played the most astounding solo i've ever heard in my life, upright and wiggling, skipping as she did so. she only paused because the violin player was kicking his heels up and she was laughing too hard to continue.
two weeks ago my friend and i met in the basement of her apartment complex so she could work out a piece of choreography. we have a language barrier - i'm not as good at ASL as i'd like to be (i'm still learning!) so we communicate mostly through the notes app and this strange secret language of dancers - we have the same movement vocabulary. the two of us cracking jokes at each other, giggling. there were kids in the basement too, who had been playing soccer until we took up the far corner of the room. one by one they made their slow way over like feral cats - they laid down, belly-flat against the floor, just watching. my friend and i were not in tutus - we were in slouchy shirts and leggings and socks. nothing fancy. but when i asked the kids would you like to dance too? they were immediately on their feet and spinning. i love when people dance with abandon, the wild and leggy fervor of childhood. i think it is gorgeous.
their adults showed up eventually, and a few of them said hey, let's not bother the nice ladies. but they weren't bothering us, they were just having fun - so. a few of the adults started dancing awkwardly along, and then most of the adults. someone brought down a better sound system. someone opened a watermelon and started handing out slices. it was 8 PM on a tuesday and nothing about that day was particularly special; we might as well party.
one time i hosted a free "paint along party" and about 20 adults worked quietly while i taught them how to paint nessie. one time i taught community dance classes and so many people showed up we had to move the whole thing outside. we used chairs and coatracks to balance. one time i showed up to a random band playing in a random location, and the whole thing got packed so quickly we had to open every door and window in the place.
i don't think i can tell you how much people want to be making art and engaging with art. they want to, desperately. so many people would be stunning artists, but they are lied to and told from a very young age that art only matters if it is planned, purposeful, beautiful. that if you have an idea, you need to be able to express it perfectly. this is not true. you don't get only 1 chance to communicate. you can spend a lifetime trying to display exactly 1 thing you can never quite language. you can just express the "!!??!!!"-ing-ness of being alive; that is something none of us really have a full grasp on creating. and even when we can't make what we want - god, it feels fucking good to try. and even just enjoying other artists - art inherently rewards the act of participating.
i wasn't raised wealthy. whenever i make a post about art, someone inevitably says something along the lines of well some of us aren't that lucky. i am not lucky; i am dedicated. i have a chronic condition, my hands are constantly in pain. i am not neurotypical, nor was i raised safe. i worked 5-7 jobs while some of these memories happened. i chose art because it mattered to me more than anything on this fucking planet - i would work 80 hours a week just so i could afford to write in 3 of them.
and i am still telling you - if you are called to make art, you are called to the part of you that is human. you do not have to be good at it. you do not have to have enormous amounts of privilege. you can just... give yourself permission. you can just say i'm going to make something now and then - go out and make it. raquel it won't be good though that is okay, i don't make good things every time either. besides. who decides what good even is?
you weren't called to make something because you wanted it to be good, you were called to make something because it is a basic instinct. you were taught to judge its worth and over-value perfection. you are doing something impossible. a god's ability: from nothing springs creation.
a few months ago i found a piece of sidewalk chalk and started drawing. within an hour i had somehow collected a small classroom of young children. their adults often brought their own chalk. i looked up and about fifteen families had joined me from around the block. we drew scrangly unicorns and messed up flowers and one girl asked me to draw charizard. i am not good at drawing. i basically drew an orb with wings. you would have thought i drew her the mona lisa. she dragged her mother over and pointed and said look! look what she drew for me and, in the moment, i admit i flinched (sorry, i don't -). but the mother just grinned at me. he's beautiful. and then she sat down and started drawing.
someone took a picture of it. it was in the local newspaper. the summary underneath said joyful and spontaneous artwork from local artists springs up in public gallery. in the picture, a little girl covered in chalk dust has her head thrown back, delighted. laughing.
#writeblr#warm up#this is longer than i wanted i really considered removing that part about myself and what i went thru#but i think it really fucking bothers me that EVERY time i talk about being an artist#ppl assume i just like. had the skill and ability to drop everything and pay for grad school.#like sir i grew up poor. my house wasn't a safe space. i gave up a FREE RIDE TO LAW SCHOOL. for THIS. bc i chose it.#was it fucking hard? was i choosing the hard thing?? yes.#but we need to stop seeing artists as lazy layabouts that can ''afford'' to just ''sit around and create''#when MANY - if not MOST - of us are NOT like that. we have to work our fucking ASSES off. hard work. long and hard work#part of valuing artists is recognizing the amount we sacrifice to make our art. bc it doesn't just#like HAPPEN to us. also btw it rarely has anything to do with true talent.#speaking as someone with a chronic condition i hate when ppl are like u have it easy. like actively as i'm writing this my hands r#ACTIVELY hurting me. i haven't been posting bc my left hand was curled in a claw for the last week#this isn't fucking luck. after a certain point it's not even TALENT. it's dedication & sacrifice.#''u get to flounce around and do nothing with ur life'' is a narrative that is a direct result of capitalism#imagine if we said that about literally any other profession.#''oh so u give up 10 yrs of ur life to be a doctor? u sacrifice having a social life and u get SUPER in debt?#u need to work countless hours and it will often be thankless? well i wish i was that lucky''#we should be applying that logic to landlords ONLY#''oh ur mom and dad gave u the money to buy a house? and all u did was paint it white and rent it? huh.''

Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt during the Lovecraft fight has always been so interesting to me...
Tumblr media
Because it's the kind of worry you'd never expect from a character as gruff as Chuuya, who had displayed nothing but hostility towards Dazai so far. Usually, characters that are labelled as "angry" or "anger issues" (which Chuuya is much more complex than that but you get my point) act more as a tsundere type of way when the one they "don't care about" gets hurt. And show their care in very, very subtle ways (ex. their eyes widen, their mouth parts and closes again, etc) before putting up their front once more.
Chuuya, however, is open, and vocal about it. His worry is clear not only to us, but to Dazai himself, the one he shouldn't be displaying the concern to (as per the cliche). Shouldn't it be some sort of secret that Chuuya does care? Isn't that what skk's dynamic has been shaping up to be until now?
I'm telling you- the way my mind blanked when Chuuya just casually.... showed concern not once, but twice, was a sight to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides, the context makes it much more confusing, because Dazai isn't some rookie, and Chuuya knows that more than anybody. He was the youngest executive in Port Mafia's history, of course he can handle a hit or two. Of course he'd seen him handle a hit or two, sometimes without batting an eye.
Heck, Chuuya himself was hurling Dazai like a ragdoll in their reunion, which was their last meeting. And you could argue that he was going easy on him, but Dazai has mostly withstood the same damage (as far as I could see), and Chuuya was as bitter as ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So that kind of contradicts both what we knew of Chuuya so far, and how their dynamic was shaped to be. I mean, that just makes Chuuya a hypocrite, yeah? What makes him care now, all of a sudden? What makes him care at all?
Well, to me, this backasswards reaction implies one (or more) of the following:
- Dazai rarely got physically hurt during their partnership and thus this is an unexpected thing for him to see (during a mission).
- The four years of separation made Chuuya unsure of how much Dazai can withstand physically now. Also the fact that he isn't in the mafia anymore, aka fighting enemy organizations on the weekly, would naturally make Dazai lose his touch in a way, what prompts Chuuya's reaction.
- Dazai getting taken off guard took him off guard which led to panic. Especially since the situation was (momentarily) out of their depth. Seriously wtf even was Lovecraft?
- During the dungeon scene Dazai was an enemy, while in the Lovecraft fight he was as an ally. The difference might be significant to Chuuya.
- This has always been Chuuya's reaction to Dazai getting hurt regardless of the situation.
- "Only I can hurt him like that" ahh logic
- Asagiri was still experimenting with their dynamic and thus there are some inconsistencies.
This scenario didn't play out again (after their reunion) for me to exactly determine which one is more plausible, but it is 100% canon for Chuuya to shamelessly show his concern and run to Dazai to check on him before properly dealing with their opponent, which I find to be such an appealing layer to their dynamic, and a good spin on the type of character he gets stereotyped as.
Bonus: Dazai also becomes a softy when Chuuya's hurt, especially post corruption. Dead Apple alone displays that multiple times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, Skk are doing a terrible job at maintaining their 'hostile' and 'antagonistic' relationship post their reunion. Freaks.

I think 90% of my gripes with how modern anime looks comes down to flat color design/palettes.
Non-cohesive, washed-out color palettes can destroy lineart quality. I see this all the time when comparing an anime's lineart/layout to its colored/post-processed final product and it's heartbreaking. Compare this pre-color vs. final frame from Dungeon Meshi's OP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much sharpness and detail and weight gets washed out and flattened by 'meh' color design. I LOVE the flow and thickness and shadows in the fabrics on the left. The white against pastel really brings it out. Check out all the detail in their hair, the highlights in Rin's, the different hues to denote hair color, the blue tint in the clothes' shadows, and how all of that just gets... lost. It works, but it's not particularly good and does a disservice to the line-artist.
I'm using Dungeon Meshi as an example not because it's bad, I'm just especially disappointed because this is Studio Trigger we're talking about. The character animation is fantastic, but the color design is usually much more exciting. We're not seeing Trigger at their full potential, so I'm focusing on them.
Here's a very quick and messy color correct. Not meant to be taken seriously, just to provide comparison to see why colors can feel "washed out." Top is edit, bottom is original.
You can really see how desaturated and "white fluorescent lighting" the original color palettes are.
[Remember: the easiest way to make your colors more lively is to choose a warm or cool tint. From there, you can play around with bringing out complementary colors for a cohesive palette (I warmed Marcille's skintone and hair but made sure to bring out her deep blue clothes). Avoid using too many blend mode layers; hand-picking colors will really help you build your innate color sense and find a color style. Try using saturated colors in unexpected places! If you're coloring a night scene, try using deep blues or greens or magentas. You see these deep colors used all the time in older anime because they couldn't rely on a lightness scale to make colors darker, they had to use darker paints with specific hues. Don't overthink it, simpler is better!]

i was never as optimistic about the ending of bnha as some villain stans were, but i never thought it'd end so badly it left me wondering why horikoshi ever bothered to humanize the villains or make them complex characters at all.
like-- i expected that at least 1-2 of the 3 villains who were heavily foreshadowed and outlined by the narrative as people to be saved would be, you know, actually saved. i didn't think that was a high bar. i've been let down before in fandoms where everyone was certain a character would live and then they didn't, so i tried to keep my hopes low. AND YET.
what happened to tomura was upsetting, but i wasn't that shocked after how disinterested the manga has seemed to be in him for like, the past 100 or so chapters. a bit surprised, because you'd think if anyone would succeed in the 'saving' mission it would be the MC, but whatever. dabi, well, they've spent a lot of time showing the way his quirk destroys his body even before this arc, so that also sucked but at least it didn't feel completely out of left field.
........but they're not even letting toga live???
i just-- what have we even been doing here? when zero out of the 3 characters that were marked out for saving were actually saved, you have to acknowledge that something has gone seriously fucking wrong with the storytelling. not even just from the perspective of a villain fan but from the perspective of someone who likes stories to be thematically consistent or satisfying in any way.
you can set up an expectation of these characters being saved and then subvert that and turn it into a tragedy- if done well that could even be worthwhile and interesting. but you can't turn it into a tragedy and then just... keep trucking along with the happy ending messaging and act like anything in the manga has been resolved and that the characters have somehow successfully completed their heroic origin stories.
like, maybe i shouldn't have expected this much from a shounen- at the end of the day it is still a shounen so i didn't expect to feel that it truly satisfactorily wrapped up all the themes it brought up around societal ills. but i expected it to at least resolve those things in a shounen-y way where they punch the problems and help these specific people and then you can feel good assuming that the state of things will continue to improve in the post-canon world of the manga.
instead we got... uh, none of that. the story refused to answer a single one of the larger questions it's been outlining for the past 400+ chapters. in the end, it was all flash and no substance, which again could've been fine, if it weren't for the way the story seemed to spend significant chunks of time trying to delude you into thinking it had substance.
truly makes me wonder what horikoshi thought he was doing the entire time. can it really all be blamed on burnout? the most that can be said for this ending is that it is, well, an ending. fuck dude, it is that.
and that's just... such a sad way to end a project that took up 10 years of your life.

Really I think nothing shouts "my first Presidential election as a politically active person was 2016" more than the fact that when I feel hope and excitement for the future (possible President Harris) for more than five minutes I immediately get a crushing, all-consuming anxiety of "feeling this positive emotion now is going to make it so much worse when the worst thing possible happens" to the extent that I'll probably need my break-glass-in-case-of-emergency anxiety medication.
