Top 7 moments:

When we find out the Jiang Cheng sacrificed himself to the Wens to save Wei Wuxian. It was dropped so casually and I had to backtrack and go "wait, wait, WAIT! DISCUSS IT PLEASE!!"

The juniors in the Yi City arc, they were so adorable, I loved reading them putting on a brave face and investigating.

Wei Wuxian murdering the crap out of Wen Chao with his sexy undead ladies. Him and Jiang Cheng together torturing him while Lan Wangji was sent out and it's like, LWJ is confused, shocked, and horrified.

The scene where Wei Wuxian's roasting Jin Guangshan at the conference post-war and everyone's scandalized. I love it when Wei Wuxian gets bitchy.

Jiang Cheng's intro scene in the donghua where he emerges from the shadows of that tree, pushing aside the leaves. That's so hot of him.

Wei Wuxian covered in blood in the second siege of Burial Mounds and Lan Wangji is defending him. That scene's so cool and romantic in all its iterations. The donghua went above and beyond and made it seem like a wedding.

Jiang Cheng giving Zidian to Jin Ling ;_; It hurts me. It's so much worse knowing that MXTX was planning on killing Jin Ling soon after to really hurt Jiang Cheng.

Reasons I like:

Jiang Cheng-

He's so complicated! You can't immediately look at him and say he's the good guy or the bad guy. I personally think he leans more towards the good guy category.

He's the perfect opposite of Wei Wuxian, he's not a genius cultivator like wwx, he had to work for every bit of progress he made. He started off simply wanting to keep his family together and at peace, but the war happened and his priorities shifted. He's duty-bound, he's always fighting and scraping to be recognized but no one ever does. He wanted so bad to help wwx, but duty made it so that he was forced to pick between his sect and wwx. Forever chained, closed off.

He's jealous and vicious and so, so angry. I get it, I understand the worst parts of him and relate to it.

Wei Wuxian-

Again, super complicated as a person. Wronged at every turn. He wanted to do good and protect people, and for that he kept sacrificing himself over and over again with little value given to himself as a person. He's got his sharp edges and cruelty too, and I feel like people often forget that Wei Wuxian's traumas and his lack of self-appreciation and value on himself show in ugly and vicious ways.

His story obviously shows a key message of MDZS, which is that when people sacrifice themselves thinking that they're protecting their loved one, they only hurt them in another way. I understood his desire to do good, protect people, but there's no one to stand at his side. The loneliness and fear that comes with fucking up so bad that no one even tries to hear you out, no one's listening no matter how loud you shout.

Xiao Xingchen:

He's like Wei Wuxian but 100% times worse and more self-sacrificial. Too trusting, too good, and everyone kept taking advantage of that without bothering to guide him or be honest with him. Like legit, no one told him what they were truly thinking.

I love that xxc wants to be a good person, i hate that he was ruined for it. God I really wanted him to have a happy ending because he's just, he's so NICE. In a world filled with betrayal and deceit, xxc wanted to spread goodness. And yet.

I think these characters made me see the point of MDZS in a very clear way, or in a way that impacted me most. So they're my faves.

Being a Jiang Cheng liker is a struggle! I was getting into MDZS even before the donghua started airing, like around 2018 and back then Jiang Cheng hate was so bad. I kept waiting year after year for the hate to go down but it just got worse the more popular MDZS got. The misunderstandings built up too. I got black and got into a million arguments too ;_; We have to stick together!!!

i have so many thoughts about Jiang Cheng specifically because, okay I read and watched everything about 3 years ago, so I don't remember much other than my fav, so I'm always thinking about everything he did.

Do you love/hate/not feel strongly about this character? i hate him. passionately. ardently. with abandon. i hate him in the "Doctors HATE Her! Local Woman Discovers One Weird Trick to Staying Healthy Forever" way. like, how dare he! he made everything else moot. he is the answer to all things. thank glorb for him but also what is even the point of anything other than him now that he exists. he ruined my life. i'm obsessed with him.

What’s your favorite trait of this character? what kind of a question is this? ridiculous. how could i possibly answer? i don't see it and i won't respond to it.

What’s your favorite moment/event involving this character? also impossible to answer. do u remember when he wrinkles his nose at the bunny rabbit. or when he puts his body between his mom and his brother whose hand she's trying to cut off. how about his dream sequence in which his dad pays attention to both him AND wei wuxian. how about take care. what about i'm his jiujiu. him holding hands with his siblings and crying in a boat. making a badass entrance and then getting his ass handed to him thirty seconds later. toasting the yiling patriarch. my future nephew. eye rolls #1-256. i will scare all the dogs away. the chenqing toss. can you introduce me to this famous cultivator. taking the chopsticks upside down. who made you cry. the utter trust as his big brother blindfolds him. sneaking in a post-torture steamed bun. like hello. we will be here all day.

If you could have one power/attribute/etc. of this character, what would it be? he Gets Shit Done. i would also very much like to Do Shit! i would not, however, like to have to undergo any of the things he underwent in developing that facet of his personality. hopefully that goes without saying.

Have you ever pictured this character naked? nope.

When did you fall in love/hate with this character? If you don’t have any strong feelings toward them, why not? i actually do remember this! i was SUPER unimpressed with him for the first several episodes. my original reaction to his crush on wen qing, for example, was "pshh. you and everyone else [meaning me]. get in line mofo." first major nail in the coffin was in episode 11 when he has that sweet little smile on his face watching wei wuxian beat him at archery. clincher was episode 14 when he rescues wei wuxian and then brings him soup in bed, followed by parental fight and yunmeng shuangjie promise. that was it for me. there was no turning back after that.

Who’s your OTP for this character? my most important relationships for him are with his siblings, but for romantic ships i'm partial to chengqing, though i won't say no to a crackship, especially if it's to annoy wei wuxian. post-canon jc/lqr, anyone?

okay since a bunch of you asked, here is my review of kris' podcast with snc ! :)

first off, i highly recommend you go watch it. i'll link it right here. it was seriously so fun to watch and very silly. but it had some really good points in it too.

i'll give some overall thoughts and then i'll point out random things that i liked.

so i think the flow of their conversation thru out the podcast was really fun, even if they were hung over from the night before. kris is really good at interviewing ppl, or at least snc. so i'm interested to see her do other podcasts in the future.

the beer pong element was a fun way to break up the podcast without getting it too far off topic.

this podcast also really made me love kris. i've watched her from time to time, never been a huge fan or anything. just someone that i could occasionally throw on in the background or whatever. but her banter with snc… top notch. i want to be friends with her just so we could sass snc together.

they were all so giggly together and it was just so cute to see. 10/10 watch this podcast again.

also…. was it just me or was she flirting with colby??? i KNOW they are just friends. i'm not actually shipping them…. but if they ever got together i wouldn't be mad. just saying.

okay, here are some random things that i liked that happened during the podcast:

kris saying colby should do voice acting: YES. she is just like me forreal. especially with the mics she was using, my god his voice is hot.

the reoccurring joke that colby is conceited was kinda fun, until i started thinking of ppl taking it too seriously. that man already gets enough shit, yall better STOP before it gets bad lol

kris' hair looks so nice. i love that color on her. it really warms up her face.

when kris made the joke of "are you guys gonna quit now since you hit 10 mil", and colby said "he (sam) gets to decide that, not me." and then followed it up by explaining their dynamic as "he's the leader and i'm lazy as hell, i don't do anything." this man was feeling SPICY that day lol i love sassy colby it's kinda my favorite

I LOVED EVERY MOMENT

Do you have any book or movie recs? I like most anything (tho i do tend to stay away from horror/body gorey stuff, psychological and thrillers are good tho)

OMG That umbrella is cute! But yes, I get it would be a waste if it doesn't keep you dry 😭 Maybe keep those 30$ for something else. Who knows, you might find another umbrella less expensive that would keep you dry 👀 Tell me if you end up getting it or not.

As for books and movies recs, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES! (both the movie and the book, it's one of my favorite movie and my fave book). Also you should read The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel. I dream to have it adapted as a mini-series like Sharp Objects. Speaking of Sharp Objects, any books by Gillian Flynn. I LOVE Gone Girl (and same for the movie). Factory Girl with Sienna Miller is also an underrated movie you should watch. Then I'd say any Sofia Coppola's movies (tho I haven't seen them all, but their aesthetic is always neat 👌🏻), I think you could like The Beguiled from what you told me. Then, I like lot of horror movies so my recs are a little bit limited here, but if you want one which is fun and not gorey, you can try Happy Death Day.

And for underrated shows, the first one coming to my mind is The Royals with Elizabeth Hurley. It's the story of an original British Royal Family and it's absolutely funny, tho some moment might break your heart 😭 But Eleonore, one of the main characters, has such an amazing arc and she will be forever one of my fave characters. Also, the soundtrack is a BANGER!

Building the SS MianLin

Ok, bc of the existence of the Lan Wenhui au, I'm content to disembark from the jc/zyx ship. And, of course, forever happy to go where the story takes us. But Mianmian and Yunxun! This could be fun! And unlike lxc/zyx, doesn't require as much 'hasn't happened yet' to make the shop float. (My personal feelings on ot3 are already documented.)

- Comparable levels of snark. I mean, the two are basically trying to raise jzx into a normal human being, and they understand that this is an Undertaking and must be done w a certain level of humor/exasperated self-awareness wrt to difficulty of the task that no one asked them to do

- And they're part of Gucci Gang together! Established friends! Trauma bonding!

- Lqy would fit in beautifully w Shuangfeng, is my bet. Just enough gremlin, just enough political savvy, would be over the moon at ppl not taking her less seriously bc of her gender

- Least likely to take zyx's gender fuckery as deathly injury to their worldview/paradigms. Would honestly probs be amused and Understand thoroughly

- No need for any sort of widespread gender reveal!

- If they got married, she could be in on the gender fuckery. "Ah, yes, my....husband... 😏" "Oh no, this is my sister-in-law"

- (Congrats her on bagging one of the jianghu's top 5 lmao)

- Would not infect zyx w the Drama. Lqy isn't immune to Drama (see her canon quitting of the Jin Sect), but she's too sensible to suffer fools and knows when to peace out. Unlike the rest of the contenders on dbd's The Bachelor, she isn't a Drama Magnet

- Also, zyx wouldn't be tied to a sect leader/heir. Big sigh of relief

- Previously referenced sensibility means she'd also be able to bring the side eye of judgment down on zyx when they get too wrapped up in convoluted research and neglect bodily needs, but also knows when to let things be

- Lqy is the closest thing this franchise has to a normal, emotionally even-keeled character. A selling pt all on its own. Also the character probably least likely to make zyx feel like they have to tend to their partner's emotional needs and growth

- Would be A-OK w trolling the hell out of wwx for his longstanding crush on zyx/be unimpressed w his tryhard insinuating teasing

- And, most importantly, basically guaranteed that there would be no untoward biomechanics troubleshooting 😂😂

i think you're the first to really bring this possibility up, too. addressing each point

- yes, there's already personality chemistry between the two of them, esp when lqy comes out of her shell

- friendship is a very important foundation, and they've started on their way to building it (even the current issues, of which lqy's part hasn't been fully addressed yet, is all part of sweet sweet development)

- true, but a lot of the misfits of the cultivation realm (ie. most of the canon characters) would do okay-to-well there, too

- true to an extent - i feel it still depends on when and where and other developments between them. while we all like joking that lqy is the best and most boss-ass, rational bitch in the house, she's still a teen that's growing and maturing, she's still a person that has human flaws and biases. when everything settles, amusement and understand will probably the general feeling, yes.

- also true - but depending how things play out for others and wherever gender reveals are dropped, can be the same for others (not saying i'm dropping these genders whenever i feel like being saucy - a lot of these moments and instigations have already been plotted)

- YES. 100% post-canon shenanigans, bonus points in really annoying the shit out of nosy canon-folk that want to know about zyx's family (eg. wwx only gets nosier and nosier w his favorite people)

- (damn bro, yes, you clocked the self-indulgence, zyx will absolutely go up in rank)

- Also yes to the lack of Drama(tm), just regular drama.

- Also very true, and it also makes [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] easier

- Another aspect of lqy and zyx getting along, having inherent balance in their respective personalities

- Equality is important in a relationship (even if not perfectly 'equal'). Helps that zyx would have to get to know lqy as a person more than what the media showed her as (sassy, rational, etc etc). it's more organic

- see the point on gender fuckery, this is an extension of it

- no one's gonna die via a giant skewer, but there's definitely a learning curve nonetheless

all of these are nice points made... but none of them take into account to how it takes two to tango

so while we're seeing dbd and the other characters through zyx...

(A/N: If you're wondering about a certain other someone, he will have a wonderful, full life of his own in Suzhou in this AU but is not in this story. 💙 There are some brief mentions of offscreen ace-antagonism, not by anyone we know.)

Jiang Cheng had been Wei Ying's best friend in the whole world for his entire life.

Okay. Well, not quite his entire life, but certainly since Wei Ying’s parents moved to California when he was little little, which was about as far back as Wei Ying could remember anyway. Wei Ying’s baba and Jiang Cheng’s baba had grown up in Wuhan together and been best friends when they were kids, so naturally, when Wei Ying’s family moved into the same neighborhood as the Jiangs, it made perfect sense for Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng to become best friends too.

It was Jiang Cheng who had taught Wei Ying that he didn't have to be afraid of dogs, by introducing him to Princess, Jasmine, and Lil' Love. Lil' Love lived up to her name, coming and quietly sitting in all her fluffy glory on Wei Ying’s lap every time he went over to play.

It was also Jiang Cheng who Wei Ying got drunk with for the first time. They snuck booze from the cabinet where Wei Ying’s parents kept it and laughed at the faces each other made with every shot until they stopped tasting the harsh burn, and then laughing more just because.

(Wei Ying’s mom had not laughed, not at the time, when the two teens had been sick as anything the next morning, but instead made them a gloriously greasy late breakfast and gave them lots of advice about proper hydration.

Then she told Jiang Cheng’s mom and let her scold them.)

It was Jiang Cheng who came out first, their first semester in college, when he told Wei Ying he didn't think he wanted to have sex with anyone, ever, and asked if Wei Ying thought that meant no one would ever want to date him. Wei Ying hugged him tight and told him he didn't know about everyone out there, but he knew Jiang Cheng was the best guy in the world and would be an awesome boyfriend, and he'd fight anyone who said differently.

Jiang Cheng found a group on campus for third culture LBGT kids, and Wei Ying went with him, as a supportive ally.

Which was how Wei Ying figured out that he was not just a supportive ally.

In listening to the others talk about orientation and identity and attraction and cultural expectations, Wei Ying realized that what he'd always assumed was normal—finding all kinds of people physically attractive, regardless of their gender—was actually his bisexuality. So that was kind of cool.

"So yeah, now we can be queer together!" Wei Ying said, when he excitedly shared his newfound realization with Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng snorted. "Yeah, 'all' and 'nothing,'" he joked.

It was Jiang Cheng who'd helped him practice what to say to his parents when he wanted to change his major at the end of sophomore year, and Jiang Cheng who reminded him to eat and sleep and "take a fucking break, Wei Ying," those next couple semesters when he took way too many hours so he wouldn't have to rack up a whole extra year's worth of student loans to finish his new degree plan.

It was Jiang Cheng who graduated first, on a gorgeous blue-skyed sunny day in May, and Jiang Cheng who suggested Wei Ying keep living with him at his new apartment, so he wouldn't have to try to find a one-semester lease until he finished in December.

(They renewed the lease together every time.)

Jiang Cheng ribbed him playfully each time Wei Ying met someone new, but he was always there each times things fizzled out after a few months for reasons that never quite made sense to Wei Ying.

Jiang Cheng occasionally dated too, and Wei Ying was glad he never did have to fight anybody—though he did drive Jiang Cheng to the emergency room the time he came home with split knuckles from punching a guy who, "seemed to think I didn't know my own mind about certain things."

But dating sucked for everybody, right? It wasn't like Wei Ying or Jiang Cheng were in any hurry to settle down and do the whole spouse and kids thing or whatever. Wei Ying tried to imagine it and just... couldn't, though the image of Jiang Cheng with a baby was admittedly pretty cute.

It was not Jiang Cheng, but Jiang Yanli, a few months after she proposed to her girlfriend and they started planning their wedding, who Wei Ying finally asked, "Yanli-jie, how does a person decide someone else is their person?"

Jiang Yanli looked across the room to where Jiang Cheng was showing her soon-to-be-wife how to put side spin on a billiards ball and smiled. "I think you just know," she said. "You meet someone and you get to know them, spend time together, then one day you realize you love them and want to build the rest of your life with them."

Wei Ying wrinkled his nose. "I dunno if it works that way for me. Just some random person? I've never met anyone I can imagine wanting to live with all the time. Well, besides—huh..." he cut off suddenly and darted a look over at Jiang Yanli, who just calmly sipped her drink.

"Have you ever told him that?" she asked, after a moment where Wei Ying reassessed his entire life and dating history. "I think he might appreciate hearing it."

"I... huh. Yanli-jie, you're kinda blowing my mind here," he complained.

"I gathered," she said wryly, before fixing him with a smile that made all the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "Of course, I trust," she told him, "that I do not need to explain to you of all people how very dearly I hold my didi's happiness and well-being."

He swallowed and raised three fingers in the salute he'd used ever since the summer that—hah—he and Jiang Cheng had decided as kids that they would make their own oath of brotherhood like the heroes of their favorite show. "I, Wei Ying, swear to you that I would kick my own ass before I did anything to hurt him."

Jiang Yanli leaned over to knock her shoulder against his and nodded. "That's what I thought."

Turned out, dating Jiang Cheng didn't suck at all.

It felt easy in a way Wei Ying’s past dates never had, less like trying to keep up with a game whose rules everybody knew except him, more like... well, like spending time with his best friend in the whole world, but on purpose. There was also a tension in the back of Wei Ying’s mind that seemed to have lifted, though he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was that had gone.

It was Jiang Cheng who helped him figure it out.

"I think it's that now I'm able to count on this. On us," he said, when Wei Ying brought it up. "Before, whenever you went out with someone new, I wondered if this would be the time you'd find someone to fall in love with and leave me behind."

"Aww, Chengcheng! I would never!"

Jiang Cheng huffed and rolled his eyes, but his cheeks were pink. "Well, I know that now," he said, a pleased little smile breaking through his attempts at a scowl.

"As long as you're sure—" Wei Ying began, still getting used to thinking about himself with the word "aromantic." Still a so very sure that Jiang Cheng deserved to be fallen in love with.

"Hey!" Jiang Cheng cut him off. "None of that. I know you. And I know you don't see it this way, but I personally think it's pretty damn romantic that you choose to love me, on purpose."

"I simply have exquisite taste in life partners," Wei Ying sniffed, embarassed the way he always got when Jiang Cheng declared something he'd done "romantic."

"You do," Jiang Cheng agreed. "Someone told me a long time ago I was the best guy in the world and would make an awesome boyfriend, and that he would fight anyone who said differently."

Wei Ying laughed. "That's you and your sister I've promised to kick my own ass if I ever break your heart, then. Guess I'll just have to keep you forever."

"Damn right, you will," Jiang Cheng agreed, grinning smug and happy and breathtakingly beautiful. Wei Ying leaned across the couch to give him a sweet, closed-mouth kiss—the kind Jiang Cheng had shyly admitted he actually did like, a lot—and smiled too, at how lucky he'd gotten to be with his best friend in the whole world for his entire life.

Top 5 Movies you saw this year

wow tbh I didn’t watch many movies this year as I realized yesterday when I was thinking about this for certain reasons. Or at least I feel like I didn’t watch that many? Nothing really stuck with me it seems.

Because of this, I will only mention two: Parasite and The Old Guard. Those were both wonderful in their own ways and I’m very happy I got to watch them both ^^

Top 5 TV shows you watched this year

this one is difficult bc I watched so many (and forgot even more?) but:

The Lost Tomb Reboot (my introduction to DMBJ. this drama stole my heart and helped me through the tough autumn semester!) 

Joy of Life (it’s nuts that this happened during 2020? it feels like it was ages ago)

Kingdom (such a positive surprise and I really hope we get more of this :o I really recommend!)

Detective L (easy, nice aesthetics, amazing costumes. Bai Yu was a delight as Luo Fei)

Sand Sea (I am still baffled by how much I loved this bc I had so many doubts? am happy I did tho)

Bonus: Guardian (bc it has come to stay and the rewatch has been so emotional but so rewarding)

Top 5 songs of 2020

this is a tough one too bc I’ve heard so much new music during 2020 but I will try to put it simply:

Black Swan by BTS (I absolutely adore this song. I listened to it on repeat when it came out at the beginning of the year, I have cried for it a ton, I enjoy every stage I see for it and it’s just a masterpiece. it has also helped a bit with my writing struggles that I’ve felt creeping up on me lately)

Always by By The Coast (an amazing song that always leaves me in my feels. inspires me a lot all the time)

Love me or Leave me by DAY6 (this whole album was a masterpiece and I listened to it on loop for like. two weeks? this was my favorite song on it even if I adored the rest too, especially Zombie)

all of my life by Park Won (listened to this a lot in relation to my xicheng and the wedding I finally got to write for them ;; that’s one good thing that came out of this year tbh)

雨人 by 刘畅 (Liu Chang) (with the Reboot’s ending song, this one is my favorite on that ost. I love Liu Chang’s voice, I loved Liu Sang as a character and as I said, I loved Reboot as a drama. I get super emotional about this ost so I think it defined this year a lot for me)

All For The Game -trilogy (listened to these as audiobooks but that counts right?)

The Song of Achilles (as an audiobook too and really adored the reader’s voice)

The Smoke Thieves -series (I really just binge read the two first books in this series and am so excited for the next one!)

Call Down The Hawk (love love love)

Guardian novel (am not very into these novels usually but I was positively surprised this time? it was so cool to finally get the original story and compare it with the drama version)

5 positive things that happened in 2020

joined mdzsnet and met all the amazing ppl there and got to become part of this loving community and :’) I’m so thankful, it’s been a joy

learned more about editing? or started doing it regularly. I still can’t do shit but am having fun learning more all the time and I really hope that maybe the upcoming year I can switch to PS and try out giffing?

went to Halsey’s concert! it was in february so a bit before all the hassle with covid happened over here ;; it was super cool and so nice and I just. I love Halsey

fell into the DMBJ hellhole which am very much enjoying. it’s a great universe and the story is so good and the dramas have been so fun to watch and. it feels like a good continuation to The Untamed somehow haha (also brought me a new friend! you’re amazing ashen!! ♥)

started therapy and it’s been... a journey. but towards something better I think? it’s something I would’ve needed ages ago but it’s better late than never I suppose

1. first creation and most recent creation of 2020: wow it’s been a while since I’ve looked at this horrible creation but here ya go jkdhgk [x]. I’ve come a long way from this (and my xicheng has come a long way from this too). most recent one is this xiaoge edit that I absolutely adore [x]. 

2. one of your favorite creations from 2020: this wwx edit that was part of my agust d2 edit series [x]. I loved to give him blue instead of his typical red. 

3. a new style you tried this year and a gifset edit that uses it: this [x] wwx edit which I don’t know if I like or not but I was playing around with the font and all the effects instead of just normal screenshots + coloring. also I just adore the quote.

“Welcome to Gusu Lan I assure you there is nothing wrong , I just don’t think humans and non-monsters can handle what the Cloud Recesses has become all at one .Please take this Stone and experience our true home at your lesiure . - Lan Xichen , Current leader of Gusu Lan.

- So Gusu Lan’s main base The cloud recesses is an Eldricht Demon realm . Which is why Xichen has filter over it for someone who is a good Cultivator like him it’s pretty easy to look at Gusu Lan in its full warped Eldricht Beauty with out going insane .

- this dose Bring Concerns about about Sizhui the only human there who sees the true Cloud Rescesses everyday and is still sane . There are. Many theories that people have which includes Him actaully having a personal Filter , him being adopted at an age were he could adapt to it and the most ridiculous being Sizhui being a higher Eldricht Being hiding using Sizhui’s body as a way To manifest itself.

Xichen seemed to change hes serene Tone for a more Melancholy one looking at one spefic Slug person with two Juniors one was a Slug like Him and other completely human . The Slug Junior seemed to have done something wrong as he was being pulled the older slug .

“Who was that you asked ? Hes my Younger brother Wangji…. I mean Lan Zhan .Wangji is a courtesy name.”

- Wen  wanted  to  Assert  Dominance   . Basically  in an Archery match the sects  have  every year  in Wen sect  no body  from  Wen  sect came in the top 4   Lan  Wangji came in  4th despite  throwing the competion  halfway  ,He's  brother Xichen  came in  second ,Jin Zixaun was third  and in first was JC's Adopted Brother Wei Wuxian  .  This  made Wen worry  

- The  first thing that Wen  did was   attack the  cloud recesses of Gusu Lan  .However Wen   didn't just  stop at forcing them  to   burn the place  down  not  they did something worse after they had burned the  Cloud recesses  they then  release  a  Large amount of   Parasitic Slugs on  the  poor sect  and since  thier Home was burned they had no where to  go , since Wangji 's Leg was  broken  and everyone  left to  run  Wangji   was  infected more severely than most of the  sect .

- However  Lan sect was Surprisingly resistance. to  Changes these Parasitic  were  making to thier  bodies and  Lasted a long while until  Xichen came back  with allies .Where Qiren  inform him of the  state  Gusu Lan was in , If the slugs weren't removed they'd all sex addicted feral  frankly ugly eldritch Slug creatures  known as Deformers  and says some have already transformed and left the sect in search of  what ever  unfortunate  partner they can get thier hands on. 

- Luckily, the Order of the Chief god heard the Plight of  the sects  fighting  against Wen's sect and thier healer/doctors could help them  . Not really ...the order of the chief god are kinda  horrible   people when it comes to  monsters  including the Chief god  himself and When Xichen  asks for  help removing  parasitic monsterizating slugs  from members of his sect most healers/ Doctors  from  the  order  turned him down saying Gusu  Lan was a lost cause and Xichen couldn't  get  help  from healer's or doctors from the area even with help of Jin Guangyao and  Nie Mingjue asking  around when they weren't  fighting  no one would take the  Job  as it would require a skilled surgeon and Gusu Lan's resitiance to the  change  was dwiddling .

-  Xichen  started to notice  that his own brother  would sometimes  attack him  in a brief feral Lust fuel rages before  snapping out it as if Wangji couldn't discern Xichen  as  his brother .

- Xichen was getting desperate he  didn't want  anymore of his Sect to become these  feral minded sex fuel Monsters that barely any remembered  who  they were. Even if they did win the Sunshot campaign , Wen would still have the last laugh .Xichen  even  consider  infecting himself with the slugs  so that  he'd aleast be able suffer with his sect  in thier final moments of being human and being capable of  having  rational  thought .Even though Jin Guangyao and Mingjue protested him doing this  they both knew thier was no point  Xichen was going  to go down with his  ship . “That was until  a strange man  who was eating  cake at the other   table  put down his  fork  he seemed to  have  be from Zipangu“ Xichen countined his Story ”however Mingjue got  more defensive when  he saw the strange  belt  around his waist the man  was a Masked Rider one the orders many  Hero's several of whom help us out in the fights against Wen. “

- However this rider  stated that he  meant no harm as he hand over heard Xichen's  plight about  the parasitic slugs and give the men the hard  truth ,The order  doesn't operate on people  with these Parasitic  slugs inside them because Removing  doesn't prevent people from  becoming  monsters.But it dose save thier ability to  think rationally  though they become  an entirely different  monster from a deformer .

- The rider then  said  He'd offer to help as he's known through the order as being a Master surgeon able  operate on any organ. Xichen accepted his  offer  with  tears of joy and hope it wasn't to late to save  his brother  and Uncle .

The Rider called his  two female  assistances  over  and told them they  were headed to Gusu lan's Section of the battle field and then to  the cloud recesses itself

- The  Cloud Recesses  now  regard this rider  and his assistances as a hero who selflessly put themselves on a the order's chopping block as they resisted the order commands not to help them .

” The Rider told me to call him Brave as to not give The order any reason to attack Gusu Lan .” Xichen snapped out his Reminescening when you ask a question “ What are the Slug people called now well Beforers .”

Beforers

- Beforers and Deformer are a Type of Eldricht Slug monster That was an Idea that me and a friend came up with during her Recent Star Wars obsession . I expanded upon Cloud Recesses and Beforers After taking a look at Junji Itos Uzamaki you know the story where people turn into snails and spirals .

- Anyways beforer just like Other Eldritch monsters are Weird . Beforers and Deformers are classified as Tritionia subspecies as they look like Sea slug though thier body structure mimic The struture of blue Dragon sea slugs( though they often are seen with legs ) they can have the Look of anything kind of sea slug.

- Deformers come from a Parasite . Deformers are basically Feral Eldritch beasts that basically Attack anyone the see as a potenial Vessels For the slug parasites and Taking them out is A basically only one way to become a Beforer as previous Said Gusu Lans Music can also cause humans to become beforer .

- So Beforer don’t manifest Genitals until they take partners. but they do Birth Asexually little slug creatures That eventually turning into Beforers basically cloning themselves

Jin Guangyao's Violation of 忠孝仁义

So I had written about WWX and his strong sense of 忠孝仁义 last week. While I was writing it, I kept on thinking about JGY and how he managed to violate all of these virtues. I wanted to go into this characterization of him because I find it so interesting how opposite he is to WWX in the decisions he made. (Warning: i’m not nice to JGY here so if you don’t want him dragged, don’t read?)

忠- loyalty, devotion, fidelity (usually for country or monarch)

(Can I take a moment to talk about how much I LOVE THIS SHOT?! The blood of WRH on the camera lens, WRH falling over, the sudden shift to brightness that mirrors the scene in ep 50 where JGY obscures the sun in his bow (picture above the read more cut)! I can’t get over how much I LOVE the lighting and the way WRH collapses, making way for JGY to become the new sun. Foreshadowing much CQL Crew?!)

This one might be a stretch depending on how you read JGY. I fully believe he went to work for Wen Ruohan as Wen Zhuliu did -- seeking someone who will value his skills. However, WZL died for WRH and JGY just bided his time. (Note: While we know very little about Wen Zhuliu, we know he was at least 忠 and 义. He died for WRH and Wen Chao and refused to let WC desecrate Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s bodies. For that, I have to give him respect. He, despite everything, still had that jianghu sense of 义. Also, the man can count. And knows what a golden core feels like.)

So we know JGY gave Lan Xichen the maps, but he also lured them to Nightless City where the puppets were waiting. Had WWX not brought out the Stygian Tiger Amulet, would JGY have murdered WRH? Or would he have stayed in the shadows forever? As a viewer I have no idea what JGY is thinking, what he’s doing, or what he’s hoping for. He hides so well his intentions that there is debate about if he really was helping with the Sunshot Campaign or not! That isn’t something you can say about someone with loyalty. 

What upsets me further is that Nie Mingjie, having been JGY’s superior officer, sees JGY more clearly than LXC can. NMJ has seen JGY murder and has seen the level of self-serving vindictiveness JGY is capable of. In the case of the Sunshot Campaign, this self-serving attitude made JGY become a double agent uncommitted to either side. Too bad NMJ could not convince LXC of JGY’s duplicity. I’m gonna blame those dimples. 

The fact that we do not know JGY’s intent really shows his lack of 忠. If You Stand For Nothing, JGY, What Will You Fall For? (Answer: Himself and that is not 忠)

孝 - filial piety (deference to your lineage)

So for 孝, you’re supposed to respect your parents, honor your parents, and defer to your parents. What are you not supposed to do? Kill you father. That’s what.

So this should’ve been a really short section because that’s pretty cut and dry. But I want to look at what JGY says to JGS when JGY brings in Sisi and the other women. 

(He’s so creepy in this picture! *shudders*)

“父亲,我给你找来了你最爱的女人. 有很多个. 你高兴吗?”

“Father, I have brought you your favorite -- women. There are many. Are you happy?”

(Translation note: you can translate the line as your favorite women or your favorite -- women. I chose to translate it as the latter due to the context.)

First of all, the tone. JGY’s voice is breathy. I can almost hear a smile. He has zero moral qualms about this. He addresses his father as father, not dad or anything close. But he does acknowledge that relationship. And then he says he’s brought JGS’s favorite. There’s a slight emphasis on the favorite there. And it’s creepy. JGY adds the next line and goose bumps start to form on my skin. He knows his father’s sins and he’s punishing his father with it. Why are you doing this JGY?! And at the end, when it asks “Are you happy?” his voice is so sinister I want to scream. JGY clearly knows what he’s doing. He knows exactly what it means to be 孝 and chooses to make a mockery of 孝, to make a mockery of his father, and to kill his father. 

And then, after he watches JGS die, he tells Sisi and the other women to continue -- to desecrate JGS’s body. This is about as un-孝 as one can get! Remember, WWX and JC were willing to die to get JFM and YZY’s bodies back so they could be cremated and honored. The difference here is night and day! Yes, JGY was very good to his mother, including building a Guanyin Statue in her likeness and sparing Sisi who was a friend of his mother’s, but I cannot get over how much of an abomination he was toward JGS (even if JGS deserved an awful death).

仁 - benevolence, humanity, love of man

JGY has no 仁. Does JGY love anyone other than himself? Maybe his mom. (He might have some 仁 towards Su Sh*t She but that’s only suggested by the last couple of episodes.) That’s really it. He might have loved Jin Ling as his nephew. He might have loved LXC for LXC’s kindness and brotherhood. He might have loved Qin Su as whatever relationship he thinks they had. But when push comes to shove, JGY has zero benevolence towards anyone. He’s willing to kill Qin Su, take Jin Ling hostage, and take LXC hostage. (He also has no 义 but that’s the next section!)

And there’s ep 23. When LXC, JGS, and NMJ were discussing what to do with the Wens,  JGY suggested the Wens be imprisoned at QiongQi Path. Since WRH had ordered the slaughter of multiple clans, including the Jiangs at Lotus Pier, doing the same to him would not be considered unreasonable. Ruthless, yes, but a good show of might and order. This acceptance of murder is due to the concept of 诛九族. 诛九族 (zhū jiǔ zú) is one of the most severe punishments in ancient China. The character breakdown makes it fairly self explanatory:

诛 - to execute, kill, put to death

九 - nine

族 - family, clan,ethnic group, or tribe

诛九族 condemns you and your entire family to death (Depending on the source, some say it’s you + 8 types of relatives. Some say it’s everyone related to you from 4 generations above to 4 generations below).

By suggesting the Wen remnants be imprisoned and not slaughtered, JGY presented himself as 仁. However, by turning around and slaughtering the people per JGS’s wishes, JGY knowingly chose the immoral path where blood flowed like rivers. 

(Also! The way this shot pans down makes me think about how JGY is descending into a hell of his own making...)

义-  righteousness and code of brotherhood

Good god, 义. I have so many feelings about 义. Let’s start with some history because CONTEXT is so important. So when you ask a chinese person on the street to give you an example of 义, I’m willing to bet one of the most common answers you will get is 桃园结义 (tao yuan jie yi, or peach garden/grove establishment of brotherhood). This is THE story of fraternal love between non-blood related men. 

So quick and dirty synopsis of 桃园结义 and the three kingdoms story (I actually haven’t read it and it’s been a while since I actually tried to figure out the plot… so hopefully this is all correct!). Three men (刘备、关羽、张飞/ Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei) met on the streets, fought each other, became besties, and decided to start a rebellion. They took over one third of the country with the oldest (刘备) being the monarch and the other two working at his side (a little Yunmeng bros feel there, right? You’ll be the leader, I’ll be your right hand man). And they died for each other. 关羽 was the first to go. To seek revenge, 张飞 worked his men to the rebellion. Two of 张飞’s subordinates ultimately decapitated him while he was sleeping and brought it to their enemy. 张飞’s head and body are buried in two different cities in China (doesn’t this make you think of NMJ’s fate? Because it did when I was thinking about this and I wanted to cry. Also, 张飞 started out as a butcher. SERIOUSLY CQL/MDZS, can we pretend to be SUBTLE!?). 刘备 continued seeking revenge. Prior to 关羽’s death, the three kingdoms were in semi-equilibrium where the two smaller ones were allied against the larger. However, 关羽 being killed by their kinda-ally destroyed the delicate balance between the three kingdoms. 刘备 could’ve tried to make peace but he wasn’t going to let his sworn brother’s murder go unavenged. They all died in the end but with honor and brotherhood intact. 刘备 and 张飞’s determination to avenge 关羽’s death epitomizes the virtue of 义. They are willing to die for eachother. 

In CQL the parallelism to the 桃园结义 imagery is obvious to anyone who has a cultural background that screams Romance of Three Kingdoms at you. Let’s take a look, ok?

And you know what that reminds me of in CQL (ep 23)? 

Are you freaking out now about the visual parallels? Ok. Good. Because we’re moving onto a tiny bit of text comparison because i’m excited and i can. 

Per Romance of Three Kingdoms (note: historically inspired novel, not history), 刘备、关羽、张飞 swore the following oath: 

“念刘备、关羽、张飞，

Hope that Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei

虽然异姓，既结为兄弟，

Even though we have different last names,since we have sworn to be brothers

则同心协力，救困扶危；

Then let us unite our hearts and efforts towards helping the needy

上报国家，下安黎庶。

Repaying our country, bringing peace to the people.

不求同年同月同日生，

We do not ask to be born on the same day of the same month of the same year

只愿同年同月同日死。

But hope to die on the same day of the same month of the same year

皇天后土，实鉴此心，

Heaven and earth, verify our hearts

背义忘恩，天人共戮！”

If we turn our backs to righteousness and forget charity, may we be slaughtered by all. 

Now, let’s look at the oath said by the 3zun:

“神明在上。

Brilliant gods above, 

今日我兄弟三人在此立下重誓，

Today, we three brothers swear a solemn oath here 

上报仙门，下安黎庶 ， 

To repay our cultivation sects, To bring peace to the people.

天地同证，如有异心，

Heaven and earth be our witnesses. If we become disloyal, 

千夫所指，天人共怒”

May a thousand men point their fingers at us and may we be incite the anger of all

Even some of the wording is verbatim. The parts I bolded are what I was excited by since they’re either parallel or verbatim. 

The first set of lines: 上报国家，下安黎庶 and 上报仙门，下安黎庶 . (Remember when I guessed in my WWX post that since there are no countries, the cultivation sects are the target of 忠? This is my proof that I was right!) My hubris aside, this is the part of their oath where they swear to be both 忠 and 仁 together. The wording is verbatim except for the part that doesn’t apply to the CQL universe! 

The second set of lines: 天人共戮 vs 天人共怒. The sentence/phrase format and message is identical-- betray this oath and incur wrath.  (I can’t help but headcanon NMJ wanted to say 天人共戮 because it’s so much more metal but JGY was like, that’s really severe and convinced LXC to side with him to get it changed.)

Even the structure of the oaths are similar. Both oaths start with an introduction (we are three who want to be brothers), both oaths ask the heaven and earth to see them (Heaven and earth, verify our hearts & heaven and earth be our witnesses), and both oaths call upon the wrath of the people for vindication in case of betrayal. The CQL version is an abridged version of the three kingdoms oath and the writers set that up along with all the imagery because they want us to be constantly thinking about the three kingdoms bros and their amazing “even after death we’re still brothers” sense of 义.  They want us to compare JGY’s 义 with that 义 and find JGY lacking. 

The obvious betrayal of 义 is NMJ’s death.  Not only is JGY the cause of NMJ’s death, he butchers (i’m cringing at my own pun... but it’s so accurate) NMJ’s body so that NMJ’s spirit cannot rest. 

But, to me, what JGY does to LXC is betrayal on par with what he does to NMJ (and not dissimilar to what Xue Yang does to Xiao Xingchen). As we went over in the section about 仁, JGY says one thing so that LXC suggest JGY handles the matter. When everyone leaves, JGY does the un-仁 thing, essentially with LXC’s blessing. JGY kills NMJ but he does it by asking LXC to teach him how to play guqin. LXC becomes an unknowing accomplice (like XXC who becomes the killer of tongueless victims of corpse poison). 

So remember in my WWX post how I said WWX took on what he perceived as JC’s debts so JC doesn’t end up 不仁不义? JGY says one thing and does another in front of LXC. He knows LXC cares deeply about being righteous and kind. He knows LXC wants to do good. And he leads LXC down a path of self doubt and regret. LXC ends up teaching JGY the techniques that kill NMJ. LXC lets JGY handle the Wen remnants. Thus, unlike WWX who tries to absolve JC, JGY intentionally puts LXC into the position of 不仁不义. 

Can WWX and JGY be more diametrically opposed (foes)?

i think the moment that jc led the wens away from wwx and never telling wwx about it (when he could have used that as a way to get wwx with his feelings of ALWAYS needing to protect jc because of what the jiangs said before he died) is suppose to indicate that in some ways that jc is not too far gone to reconcile with wwx, but he needs to be the one making the active changes and showing that he's capable of it if he allowed himself to actually grow as a person 1/?

Note, I actually consider JC as my favorite MDZS character, but spending a few days going through your blog has actually helped me articulate in words some of the things that do frustrate me about the larger fandom, where they take a fascinating and complex character and whittle him down to someone that he isn't. I won't say that I agree with everything in the grapehate tag, but some I actually do and some that was made me sit down and actually think about his character through a new lens 2/?

And unlike many people in the JC fandom, I actually like his ending. MDZS is a romance novel about Wangxian and JC is at most the fourth most important character in the book, if not even fifth. (JL is def 3, JGY is a strong argument for 4.) Him getting an ending where he's literally starting to let go of the anger that he's been feeling for (lbr) over 13 years and remembering one truly heroic and selfless moment that he did for WWX, the one time he truly lived up to the Jiang family motto (3/?)  

Shit, I don't remember what exactly was in part four. 😅 I think it was likely my rant about how it's how unfair that JC fandom treats WN like shit for revealing the truth about the GC when they say that JC had a right to know in the same breath, and that WN didn't have a right to be absolutely /furious/ at JC for everything he done with his family when it's perfectly fine for JC to be mad at all Wens for what happened to his own.

JC's the major character in the novel who can truly make a big and vital change in his life without dying or going through unspeakable trauma (God, how JC fandom treats WN pisses me off. . . . if the roles were reversed we would be cheering WN on, and honestly, while I do think the core was a dubious thing, WWX did it for the best of reasons and if you're so pissed that they did this without his knowledge, aren't you glad he knows now?). He can actually be happy! 5/6

Anyway, that's just what I think the JC sacrificing himself is suppose to mean, and especially that he doesn't or never told WWX means at heart. Hey, glad to be of assistance! As for your points, it’s certainly possible that JC leading the Wens off is intended to be at least in part a sign that things aren’t entirely hopeless for him. Even if it was in part a selfish act, it proves he is (or was at that point) capable of doing something for WWX’s sake. That’s an important thing to have, because it allows there to be some hope that maybe things will get better for them someday (although likely not any time soon; these things don’t happen quickly). That might actually be why MXTX chose to reveal it when she did; things are bad now, and their relationship will certainly never be the way it was before (and honestly that’s a good thing), but that doesn’t mean they’ll be enemies forever. If JC is willing to put in the effort and take risks the way he did that day... who knows what’ll happen? Personally I think some relationships can’t and shouldn’t be recovered, but if you think things could work out between them... hey, maybe it could.

Re his ending... honestly, I think anything happier for him would’ve felt too... I don’t know, unearned? I guess? Wangxian had to fight tooth and nail for their happy ending. WWX had to die for thirteen years and LWJ had to spend that same period remembering his lost love in a world that celebrated WWX’s death. Pretty much everyone else ends up with a miserable or at best bittersweet ending, largely through no fault of their own. JC just... getting a happy ending without trying wouldn’t have felt right, and I think I’d probably have the same reaction even if I did like JC; MDZS isn’t the sort of novel where characters get handed happy endings. He spends the entire present day arc being a dick to everyone, it wouldn’t feel deserved if he just... got what he wanted just like that at the end. It would feel incredibly forced and like MXTX was playing favourites.

And WN! My precious baby fierce corpse WN! He gets so much shit from parts of the fandom, it’s infuriating. But you know, the thing that gets me the most is that... if WN followed JC’s metric for Acceptable Vengeance For The Deaths Of Family, he’d be within his rights to wipe out every living member of JC’s extended family, maybe even to burn Lotus Pier to the ground. And he’d be able to do it, too! But WN would never, because he’s just too good. WN has every reason to despise JC, to want him dead, but he only steps in when JC is threatening WWX, who WN loves so much that he’d give his life for him (...so to speak) in a heartbeat. And even then he doesn’t physically attack him, just... tells him the truth. WN is a good boy who doesn’t deserve the slander he gets from parts of the fandom. And yeah, you’d think that if JC not knowing about the transfer was such a horrible thing WN should be praised for telling him!

(Last point: I’d argue Sizhui is higher up the Important Character Chain than JC, both in his role as Wangxian’s sort of son and as a symbol of hope; his existence is almost the narrative’s way of saying that even with everything that went wrong WWX’s attempt to protect the Wens wasn’t for nothing, and that means something important. Things went wrong, a lot of people died, but even if for only one person WWX succeeded in making the world a little better. Something something even in tragedy there’s still hope something something.)

Ah, favorite musicals! My all time favorite is Sweeney Todd. I do prefer the movie adaptation and think it’s the most cohesive version of the show, but I still like the stage show. I can go on about that one for a long time. Others, in no particular order, are: Into the Woods, Les Misérables, Hamilton, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Book of Mormon, Company, Fiddler on the Roof, and Avenue Q. I’d say Into the Woods to JCS are in my top 5 with Sweeney Todd and the others are ones I really enjoy.

Farmer Lan’s Rewatch Guide to The Untamed - Episode 1

HERE WE GO I am strapped in with my Topo Chico and ready to take on Episode 1 of The Untamed. It’s going to be wild. I have no idea what I’m doing. If you’re reading this and have a better suggestion on how I should format everything, feel free to tell me because right now this is just the diary of a madwoman.

CAUTION: Due to the chronological differences between the novel and the drama, there will be instances where I bring in references further along in the novel and/or drama to explain what is going on, so there will be spoilers if you haven’t finished the series.

[Starting scene – there’s a voiceover of people rejoicing over WWX’s death, we see a chaotic battlefield and people fighting over the Stygian Tiger Amulet (here forth abbreviated as the STA because abbreviations are my jam). WWX commits suicide by falling off a cliff, LWJ tries to stop him and then JC sends him to the depths of hell. Flash to the present when some storyteller is narrating this story, and we’re told 16 years has passed since the Nightless City incident and WWX is seemingly gone forever – although his body has never been recovered despite extensive search efforts.]

Differences from the novel:

In the novel, there is no mention of clans trying to fight over the STA during the bloodbath at Nightless City. It’s definitely true that the existence of the STA and WWX’s unchecked power led to the actions of the Nightless City, but it was a combination of multiple events that led up to the battle, and not an explicit cause and effect.

It is also explicitly stated during Chapter 1 as people recount the tale of WWX that he destroyed the STA prior to his death.

In the novel, it is stated in Chapter 1 and confirmed by WWX himself (in Chapter 43) that WWX’s death was caused by his own power rebounding upon him and he ended up being torn apart by his own undead creations. So unfortunately the epic cliff scene was entirely scripted for the drama.

13 years has passed in the novel vs. 16 years in the drama. I can’t remember if there was an exact reason why they switched up the timeline, but just know that the timeline of the novel series of events itself is also very confusing and I will probably do a post with my take on it sometime later.

[Cut to present – WWX is summoned by MXY’s sacrifice, there’s some weird mask action going on, WWX creates a ruckus at the arrival of the Gusu disciples, they set up shop with the Demon Summoning flags, tell WWX to go wait inside and then they wait for the spirits to come their way.]

Differences from the novel:

The mask does not exist in the novel. In the novel, the body that WWX is summoned into is that of MXY’s, and MXY is a different person in every way from WWX in terms of face, height, etc. So everyone who sees WWX thinks he is MXY up until he finally reveals himself. It’s obviously a stylistic choice made to reflect why no one can recognize WWX in the drama series even though they are played by the same actor, because otherwise I can see how it can get confusing for viewers.

WWX is shown to be playing the WangXian melody in the room but this does not happen in the novel, although it does lead to a pretty epic snark from my favorite boy LJY about how awful WWX’s playing is (which IS in the novel, but happens later in the story instead). WWX does NOT use a flute at all until the Da Fan Shan arc in the novel. Also Jingyi, never stop being you.

It is not explicitly mentioned that MXY went to Lan Ling Jin sect in the novel at this current point, only that he was accepted as a disciple by a sect before being kicked out. We find this out later.

Other than that, the scenes with MXY closely follows the novel up until the Demonic Left Arm (DLA) to show up.

[WWX is hauled in to confess his crimes by Matriarch Mo, things go to shit in about 3 seconds and the disciples realize they need to call for backup STAT, the flare for LWJ is sent. WWX realizes this needs to end fast in order to avoid meeting LWJ and exposing himself. A-Tong becomes possessed by the DLA, dies, and then the DLA possesses Matriarch Mo. Attempts to restrain her fail and WWX revives the other now-undead Mos to fight her.]

Differences from the novel:

The sassy verbal takedown of Matriarch Mo by WWX is indeed in the novel and just as great.

The drama identifies the black marks on the victims’ necks as being caused by the STA. There is no such scene in the novel. Basically, there is no mention of the STA being the cause of ANY of this, because in the novel, it’s not.

In the novel, the disciples send flares for back up but are uncertain how quickly back up will arrive, and they definitely did not specifically call for LWJ. However, WWX realizes he needs to intervene to end this quickly because the spirit is too powerful for the disciples to deal with, and he can’t leave the Mo household until the revenge curse put upon him by MXY is lifted (i.e. until everyone MXY wants dead is dead).

A funny scene that gets left out of the drama is: Matriarch Mo leaps to attack LSZ, who can’t dodge in time. Instead, WWX literally KICKS LJY into her path because he knows that the Gusu robes are imbued with magical protective spells, so he basically used LJY as a human talisman as a last resort. LJY did not find this funny, and WWX plays the “I didn’t do anything, I have no idea what I just did and I can’t be held culpable because I’m batshit crazy” card. Ah, my boys.

 [LWJ appears just as Matriarch Mo appears to have gotten the upper hand, and subdues her with the POWER OF MUSIC dundun (also sensually massaging the guqin strings helloooo). WWX is hiding but HE IS HERE for all of his boo’s actions. LWJ clarifies that the DLA is a spiritual sword ghost with traces of the STA, everyone gasps because didn’t WWX die? OR DID HE NOT? Time will tell, my friends. Anyway, with the DLA subdued for now, LWJ hears the footsteps of WWX running away and chases after him but sees nobody. He thinks….”WEIYING IS IT REALLY YOU??” WWX A MYSERIOUS PERSON (to be revealed...but OK it’s NHS I told you there would be spoilers) gives money to the storyteller, and then we see WWX with Little Apple and he has one more wound left on his arm, indicating there’s someone else he needs to kill on behalf of MXY.]

Differences from the novel:

In the novel, WWX leaves the moment he hears LWJ’s guqin and does not stay to spectate.

See above re: no mention of what caused this, and certainly no discussion of the STA.

There’s no mention of LWJ suspecting that it is WWX in MXY’s body, or even suspecting that he has returned at all.

In the novel, the four wounds left as a physical reminder of the body count for the revenge curse is for the three members of the Mo family and for A-Tong. Therefore, WWX leaves the Mo family effectively free of his debt to MXY, but in the drama, he is shown to still have one remaining person left to kill…dun dun dun.

Storyteller man is not around in the novel – consider him a convenient voiceover tool for the drama ha. Thanks to the @redisthecolouroffate​ for the catch, I missed this but this is also the episode where NHS first shows up to reward the man for his storytelling, which is a nice bit of foreshadowing done by the show which is not in the novel at all.

Overall Thoughts

The drama does a really good job of setting the tone from the beginning. There’s not too much deviation here compared to the first five chapters of the novel (which covers this whole Ep 1 arc) since the majority of it was to set up the premise for the show and introduce our main characters.

The main difference here is we can see the drama is already setting itself up for the STA to play a much bigger role than in the novel. In the novel, our protagonists really have no idea what is behind the DLA at this point, and they certainly don’t immediately assert that it is a ‘sword ghost’ that has been tainted by the STA. In the novel, the only explanation for the DLA at present is in Chapter 5, when WWX notes that the spirit is more powerful than most, given that this spirit has already claimed three lives in the span of a few hours. WWX also deduced that this was the arm of a person who died by dismemberment, and to summarize the novel, the ghost arm is effectively trying to find the rest of its body. Until then, it moves between ‘live hosts’ like a parasite.

Also – WWX is also noted to be wearing badly applied make up in the novel but not in the drama. It is clarified in Chapter 1 that MXY was homosexual and was kicked out of his cultivation sect as he harassed a fellow male disciple and is now basically a gay lunatic, which is unfortunately not a great look in ye olden days.

Lastly, cute tidbit in the novel in Chapter 3 that didn’t make its way into the drama – WWX secretly marveled at LSZ’s knowledge and manners, and wondered “Who in that godforsaken, old-fashioned place (referring to the Cloud Recesses) could have brought him up/taught him so well?” OH YOU’LL FIND OUT WHO HA.

I am not sure if we need another werewolf in the cast, although I would still applaud JC if they had the balls to have Ismelda being injured badly enough to leave permanent scars as the way the model is (technically, lycanthropy is only transmitted if the target is bitten, but any severe wound would leave cursed scars that cannot be fully removed).

I think what would really make the difference, if they really decided to do something like this, would be that the lycanthropy wouldn’t be a background detail of the character from jump. It would be something that happens to them over the course of the story. With Remus, with Chiara, even with Greyback...we’re introduced to them as werewolves. Sure, technically it’s a later reveal, but it’s a reveal that is telegraphed from the start and people will absolutely be able to guess apart from maybe the young kids. It’s a detail about their characters that is already true from the moment they first appear. Now imagine getting to know a character well, a totally ordinary character, and then one day they get infected in a terrible accident or incident. Bam, all of a sudden that is a major part of their life and it will be forever. I think that could be an interesting story to be told as well. You’re right, we probably don’t need another werewolf in the cast. Chiara has covered that ground pretty well. But on the other hand, werewolves are for all intents and purposes, one of the minorities in this world. So getting more representation of them could be a good thing. Reminds me of Jacob Kowalski from Fantastic Beasts. He’s probably my favorite character and one of the reasons for that is that honestly, having a muggle as one of the lead characters is pretty damn cool, we haven’t had that before.

She’s lived in BRooklyn all her life, all twenty-four years.

“So, I’m gonna be a little late this morning, seeing at it’s almost ten AM, and I just woke up.” She laughs dryly, making her way down her front steps as she heads to work. Slipping into her car, in twenty minutes she finally arrives to work, her cellphone buzzes across her desk in the loft.

“Hello?” She answers, flipping a soft, caramel curl from her face.

“Hey, you busy right now?” A soft man’s voice rasps through the phone.

“Uh, not sure what kind of prank this is, but you’re not funny.” She groans, pulling her phone away just to hear a shout from the other end.

“Wait! Wait! It’s JC, from Brooklyn ten—nineteen. I was just wondering what you were doing right now. I need your help hacking into a database. I need a name.”

“Well, I mean, I’m at work right now. What database?” She inquires, her free hand scrubbing up and down her thigh.

“Yours. I just need an address, and he’s ordered from your company before. Charlie Duncan. Ordered parts from you a while back. That’s all I got.”

“Yeah, I got a hit on him, address is a house over from mine actually. What do ya need it for?” She asks, eyes looking over the profile.

“He’s been talkin’ some shit lately.”

“Oh, alright well. Have a good night JC. Later.” She hangs up, finishes her day off and heads home for the night. As she makes it in the door she coos to her cactus at the front door, and then to her small lemon tree. She loved her little plants, they made the city life feel a little less closed in. Once her shoes were kicked off at the door, she took a moment to put her purse down and her phone rings loudly.

“Yeah?” She answers, looking down to her table.

“It’s JC, I was just wondering if maybe you wanted to come to Cali for a week.” He cheers through the phone.

“It’s just, I’m getting patched in and your my best friend, I just, I just want ya to be there, ya know?” His eyes met Clay’s, nervous and begging him to help. The man, Duncan, threatened Juice with her. Said he already had her being watched and trailed. He had cried when he found out, said that his best friend needed protected.

“Juan Carlos, I’m sorry, I can’t just drop everything and run to California.”

“Yes you can, I already talked to Cassidy, she said you needed a vacation anyway! I already bought the tickets and everything is paid for Chiquita, you just gotta enjoy the vacation.” He laughs, calling her his favorite nickname. He didn’t know any Spanish, he was just a kid from Queens, but he once stomped a man’s ass for taking her banana.

“JC, I can’t just—“

“How bout I come and pick you up?” He barks, cutting off her sentence.

“Jees, you really want me there, huh?” Jax stood close enough to hear what was being said and laughed a little.

“Yeah, I just. I just really need you here. This is a really important gig. And I need my really important lady here, ya know?” He tries to smooth talk her, and normally it worked, but she heard how desperate he sounded.

“What’s really going on?” She whispers. Jax’s brow furrows as his eyes meet Juice’s.

“Nothing, doll. I just really miss you. I just really want you. To be here, I really want you to be here.” He stammers, eyes widening.

“I miss you too, JC.” She murmurs, suddenly the hole in her heart was huge. Tears filled her eyes and she grabbed his sweatshirt from the back of the chair and headed to her bedroom.

“Pack your stuff, Chiquita. I’ll be there tomorrow.” He murmurs, his hand gripping his knee. He missed her. He missed her touch, her laugh, her smile. She was so beautiful and smart, he missed her dearly. But now, she’d be here with him. She’d be here with him.

“Jesus, why did I just agree to that?” She murmurs, packing a couple suitcases and a carry on bag.

The next day and a half flew by, without so much as a sideways glance from a hotdog cart guy and she headed into her apartment once more after work, eyes smiling at her little plants by the door. She kicked off her shoes and stepped around her suitcases to the kitchen for a glass of almond milk and a sandwich. A crash in her room makes the glass hit the floor and shatter, milk splattering against her bare legs. She grabs a kitchen knife from the drawer and heads back to her room.

“HEllo?” She calls, hands quaking as she steps another couple feet towards the rustling.

“Hello?” JC calls back.

“JC?” She calls back, brows knit together in concern. Lowering the knife, she toes the door open and swings her top half through the door.

“Hey Chiquita.” He coos, arms out to her like a welcoming hug. The knife clatters to the floor and she pounces on him, a little taken aback by his newest inks. He now had a tribal tat on either side of his head and a Mohawk.

“What are you doing here? I fly out tomorrow.”

“I cancelled it. Me and a couple of buddies came to get you. Ride back to California in style.” He chuckles, leading her out to the front room where her suitcases had disappeared.

“Where’s my Stu—-“

“Hey.” A blond biker meets you as the two of you step outside, his short hair spiked and swept to one side. He gave off some weird hippie/surfer vibes and she giggled a little.

“Hi, who are you?”

“I’m Kozik. Juice said we could put your bags in my tow along. We got ya packed up babe.” He chuckles, watching Juice glow fiery hot with rage. She couldn’t help but giggle. She always had a thing for bad boys, and here they were, calling her babe and swooning her.

“Jesus Christ Kozik, we haven’t even made it out of her fucking yard man, chill out.” Juice groans, leading her towards his Dyna. “Here, I forgot another helmet, through this on.” He assures, helping you mount his bike. His eyes wandered her body, he’d felt the way he was feeling in this moment. He wanted to spin her around right now, plant some sloppy kisses on her and have his way—.

“Wait, wait, I forgot my lemon tree!” She sprinted back inside, filling a waterer for her plant while she’s gone and sticking it in the pot.

“Yo, you have a lemon tree?” Kozik calls from his bike, hat now taming his styled hair, but a little spike poked through the front. He was sexy, she thought as she sauntered a little down her steps. Swinging a leg back over Juice’s bike, she clasps the helmet once more before they take off for California.

A week into her stay, she’d met all the boys, but for some reason, JC was always angry when they came in. Sure, they catcalled here and there, but she found it nice to be thought of as so beautiful. He sure wasn’t giving her the attention she wanted! Kozik and her had drank their weight in liquor and were currently laughing together at the bar, his hand sliding down her hip and grabbing her butt, eliciting a giggle from her.

“You’re so hot,” she groans against his scruffy cheek, her giggles setting fire to Juice’s rage. He stalks up to her, grabs her arm and hauls her away from Kozik, who laughed when he dragged her away.

“You think I don’t see you? The way you fuck Kozik with your eyes? Tell me, am I a joke to you?” He yells, his knee between her thighs pressing her against the wall, face milimeters from hers. “Tell me what you want.” He growls, hands resting on either side of her head.

“You.” She whispers back. “I only want you. I’ve wanted you since the moment you left New York,” she whines, grinding her hips against him.

“Kozik?” He asks, pressing his throbbing piece against her.

“Just-ju-just an act. Only you.” She murmurs, grabbing his face with both her hands yanking them together, his lips pressed to hers. “Want you. All of you.” She whispers against his lips as he drags her to the bed, pulling feverishly at the clothing that separated their burning flesh. Her hands finding the kutte and tossing his clothes aside.

“Tell me, baby. What do you want?” He demands, a husky whisper against her tender neck.
