Ep14- Just made a headcanon: Bucket and that buddy of his that's always with him whose name I've forgotten are a couple

It saddens me how little character the twins have in this show..

"M- Ma- Maybe because he can't stand the pressure of everybody always expecting him to have the answers!!!" That is so freaking valid, he's right!! Everyone always relies on him to know everything about dragons - wasn't Hiccup supposed to be the specialist? Ask him

Nice to see the two nerds on their early days of "geeking out"

Snotlout considers Hiccup is arch-nemesis?? What da heck, child, what has your dad been telling you? Or what have you been telling yourself

Ep15- Meatlug and Fishlegs are probably the best functioning duo after Hiccup and Toothless

While I'm glad to see the twins saying more than a couple words this episode, it makes me sad they're treating Barf&Belch so bad... They're such a good dragon

Also, Snotlout admires Dagur? And Dagur is a bully, huh

Did Dagur have a braid in RttE? I'm almost sure he didn't

Snotlout is being difficult on purpose and I salute Hiccup for not having hit him yet

I swear, every single episode focusing on the cousins has at least one moment of emotional turmoil between the two

And during Snotlout's bohoo speech, I'm almost 100% sure that if Hiccup hadn't stopped him after Snotlout mentioned his pegleg, Snotlout would continue on, and reveal those are all things Spitelout now mentions to Snotlout, like "Ya see, Hiccup, Stoick's boy, defeated the Red Death! He even lost a leg - what prouder scar on a Viking than a missing limb! - meanwhile you just trail after him, can't even control your own dragon!!" or something like that, like what he does in "Not Lout"

Try to convince me I'm wrong, I dare you

Toothless and Snotlout having a bonding moment defeating enemies together is not something I thought I'd ever see, but I happily welcome it

Also, Snotlout being competent, yes, me like

"Look, Snotlout, I'm-" "Hungry, right?" "...heh, heh.. Yeah, exactly." "Me too." This little exchange was everything, what the heck, why have I never heard of this episode before??

Hiccup's little laugh was so soft, so precious, my god I love these two

I mean, not Valka, I don't think she existed until HTTYD2, but still, just Hiccup's mom is already a lot

Fishlegs is the only teen with common sense in this group

Ruff joining Astrid on hitting Tuff made me snort

Ep18- Fishlegs missing training not necessarily because he's afraid of Snotlout, but because he genuinely doesn't like violence nor Snotlout - flex

He's singing to Meatlug, again, my lord, these two are so sweet

But Fishlegs is a bit codependent, is no one gonna talk about that?

He's selling the fucking eggs......... Snotlout, why

Also, he bought a kid. And he's mentioned owning people before. What the fuck is up with Snotlout and human trafficking, seriously. I'm just wondering what this reflects on Spitelout... What has he been teaching his son??

Is this the episode? Is Fishlegs finally gonna punch Snotlout's face in the face?? Please???

Wow. He didn't even hit him. He didn't have to. Fishlegs is not afraid of Snotlout, not really. He just doesn't like him, nor violence, so he let's Snotlout do his pathetic little number, not really caring about it, because it's really not important to him. He's proud of himself, of his knowledge and intelligence and he's unafraid to show his sensitivity or be kind. Because he's confident and unafraid of being himself, despite what his bullies may say. Fishlegs is so freaking strong and I'm not talking about physical strength here (tho he is that too)

Fishlegs has a level of self-love and loyalty to himself that I can only dream of having

He's just.. so awesome

You know, normally, this type of episode would play out with the character that found the egg getting way over their head with the power that came with it, and abusing it in the worst ways possible, only realising the harm they've done right before its too late and fixing everything on the last minute, with the help of the people he hurt before, during their megalomaniac craze. That's exactly what I was expecting out of this episode.

But then, Fishlegs made the right decision right from the start, putting the egg back in its place, throwing my plot guess out the window. His kindness and sensitivity threw me in a loop, and my love for his character has just renewed here

And geez, he still felt responsible for the mess Snotlout caused!! And he even saved the day!! My boy Fishlegs is just amazing

"Uh, dad, Gobber, other scary-looking vikings, I'd just like to say, in my own defense, that I cannot control Snotlout or the twins 24 hours a day!" pfff, poor Hiccup

An island of Night Furies...? That was Mildew, wasn't it?

"You're giving me, the twins?!" the sheer betrayal Snorlout had oozing from that sentence

Fishlegs - Very aesthetic blog about his life, cute pics of Meatlug, his garden, etc. Reblogs a lot of motivational pics of sunsets with words over them, that sort of thing. He's very particular about what he posts tho

Ruff - A lot of animal pictures/memes she just likes them, her blog is very colorful, she also posts her takes about movies/video games but she's VERY opinionated like don't bother reblogging if you don't agree w her bc she'll tear you apart

Tuff - He posts just about everything, but he LOVES to post a lot of vague, ominous stuff, like he'll be like lol does anyone have a shovel and salt? does anyone need anybody gone?? He and Ruff also just get on each others blogs sometimes and pretend to be each other just for kicks, it leads to some strange and confusing moments for the rest of the gang

ksxjsodkwkkd i have had a post abt their music tastes sitting in my drafts for months so i will just share that!! my own music is kind of limited bc i just listen to the same stuff over & over (bc neurodivergent™️) so!! my apolocheese for this not being as super in depth for some of the gang vs others. i am also open to suggestions ;_; a couple of these were from me talking with a pal, mainly astrid & fishlegs (@despiteherself hiiiii!!!!)

hiccup: lots of indie stuff, leaning more towards indie folk!! he likes anything rlly with strings involved. he's a dragonboy horsegirl at heart & wants to imagine riding through the air with winds blowing through his hair & wistfully wishing he could have a different life. he does listen to indie pop, too. he liked glass animals before they were popular & wants everyone to know it. also loves woodkid.

astrid: she has 5 songs she listens to & they were just songs ppl recommended to her. she only goes out of her way to listen to music if she's at the gym & doesn't want to talk to anyone (if snotlout is there it does not work </3) tuffnut told her "you should listen to mac miller" & she picked a single song & just made it a song she listens to. every single other song she's ever heard is inflicted upon her when she's in the car, at work, etc & her friends have their stuff. she's content with that

fishlegs: everything & anything u could possibly think of. it's all put together on one giant playlist. u will hear 1940s jazz followed by georgian chants followed by sam smith followed by power metal followed by edm & it just keeps going. knows the words to every song he ever hears. any genre, any language!! collects vinyl, tapes, cds, YOU NAME IT!!! very passionate abt music!!!!!!

snotlout: 2000s & 2010s pop & edm, duchess by fergie is one of his fave albums ever. loves lady gaga. everything else is dad rock. 80s thrash metal, nu metal, & 90s grunge, mostly. he wants to be cool so so bad, he wants to be a rockstar. learns to play guitar & is annoying abt it (can shred p well tho). is the reason everyone in the friend group has at least ONE slipknot song on their individual playlists

ruffnut: grunge, hip hop, rap, & house music. lots of in this moment & garbage. big kendrick lamar fan. lots of late 80s to early 00s for rap & hip hop. she likes to groove & vibe, occasionally headbang. i think she'd love mary j blige too. i think she, outside of everything listed, has a soft spot for p!nk & listens to her when she's having a hard time (her & snotlout sometimes listen together). i think she'd also enjoy billie holiday on a quiet day & no one is around. (she is not embarrassed by it ay all, she just likes having things for herself)

tuffnut: grunge, 70s soft rock, hip hop, & rap!!! lots of overlap with ruff but obv there's also a lot of differences!! the 70s soft rock is the main outlier. he enjoys cruising around & being wistful as he listens to america, doobie brothers, seals & croft, etc. he puts pop country on his playlists as a joke but it ends up stuck in everyone's heads & smth they all jam to to have fun.

there is a massive group playlist (fishlegs is the one who puts it together but will add a song if suggested) & it is a cacophony of so much shit. they all have their tastes but by the time they're adults they all know each other's songs & sing/jam along & have a fucking blast, esp in the car or at the sanctuary. the playlist is always on shuffle & there is the chance for a rickroll. always

songs that tend to get repeated by the group are psychosocial (slipknot), custer (slipknot), anything by pitbull, fire water burn (bloodhound gang), bbc (jaboukie), anything by woodkid, somebody i used to know (gotye), & anything by they might be giants & other assorted meme songs they love torturing each other with. (they are the most obnoxious group alive)

Title : How to Train Your Dragon 2

Disclaimer: This isn't a full review on HTTYD 2 the movie.

Once again, Hiccup floating in the air, gliding through the skies on Toothless, seamlessly flying on invisible currents is cathartic. I just wish I could breathe air that clear and fresh. I wonder if some time away from everything will make it easier to make tough decisions.

So far, I don't think I address the question on whether Hiccup wants to be chief. My reviews on Riders of Berk refer to the village's changing perspective of Hiccup and them taking to him as leader. I don't think I've discussed whether Hiccup wants the job. Besides, that question isn't material at the time and space ROB was just yet. Hiccup was still, a kid.

In HTTYD 2, we know he doesn't want to be chief because he still feels lost. Incomplete. His thirst for adventure continues and he will harken to anything calling his name (apart from his dad). But Astrid's advice rings true. He has had so many missions, adventures, discoveries in ROB, DOB and RTTE but they did not quench or answer the inner call to "Who am I?"

Even for us, sometimes wanderlust is just a distractions to the grand scheme of responsibilities we are suppose to take on to answer the question we keep asking.

Believing that being chief isn't innately him, is the very doubt that causes him to discount how much of a born leader he is.

"I was so afraid of becoming my dad, mostly because I never thought I could. How, how do you be someone that great, that brave, that selfless? I guess, you can only try," Hiccup says at his father's funeral.

Self-doubt is the thief of destiny. As such, even after his father's passing, Hiccup struggled to step into the role, to feel worthy of it, until Valka said that his father always knew he was going to be great.

"He always said you would become the strongest of them all and he was right. You have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, son."

A CHIEF PROTECTS HIS OWN

You see. This may sound like news to Hiccup, but for those who have been following his story, he has always been brave and selfless. He protected Berk and his riders, diving to their rescue even at the expense of precious treasures.

Even to the extent of protecting day-to-day relationships. Like what he did for Snotlout at Thawfest, the encouragement he brings to Fishlegs, the validation he gives the Twins. Training dragons to live w Berkians. Defending Berkians. Saving anyone that needs saving. Helping anyone that needs help. Without question or quandary.

He thought that the answer to Who am I was out there, but it was in him all along. And when you are this blind to all your attributes, the only way to answer the all-asking question is by stepping out of your comfort zone.

He has always protected his own. It started w his undying loyalty to Toothless, protecting him from day one.

I hate that Stoick's death had to happen, but it was that drastic nudge forcing Hiccup into the shoes he was always meant to fill.

Parts of me feel like I understand Hiccup, 15-year-old Hiccup and 20-year-old Hiccup because I AM HICCUP. Sure, I don't have a village to run and no legacy to fulfil, but boy am I afraid to do something because I don't think I can.

This show just speaks to me because I hear that same internal struggle tugging at my heart. Where do I fit in this world of very definable squares?

But maybe that's the answer I need to hear. That to find it, I have to go towards it. And to believe, that "this destiny" was mine all along.

Quakens. I’ve never met a Quaken dragon before, not until a few weeks ago, when we came across them on an island. We were supposed to be on a rescue mission for dragons on ships, it did end up being a rescue mission, but instead it was also a recon and rescue mission. We had split up before this, Snotlout, Rhea, Heather and Astrid went to follow the ship to where it was going. Hiccup, Fishlegs, the twins, Torsten and I stayed on the island.

The Quakens were being used as destructive tools, as if they were nothing but their own personal tools. It was like the Quakens didn’t think they were anything but that as well… It breaks my heart to see such beautiful creatures in chains, convinced their only use is to follow orders… nothing and no one deserves that kind of treatment.

I almost killed the Dragon Hunters on that island if Fishlegs had held me back, my mask on and watching them shake in terror as they stared at me… good, it is what they deserve for such a treatment to beautiful creatures.

The island was unstable due to the marble mine and the slams from the Quakens. The shaking we were experiencing was from the island mostly, it was all the Dragon Hunters’ fault. We had tried to convince the Dragon Hunters to leave willingly but they sent the Quakens at us, with a single attack they took down a lot, debris from the mine falling down and making some of the landing unstable.

Fishlegs had figured out a way to get the Quakens to listen. It was all in the giant hammer, the Quakens seemed to follow commands when the hammer was used. Unfortunately the island was too unstable to stay on, with the Quakens following us and the island erupting behind us as we flew away, we met up for the others.

A stronghold… Viggo was building a stronghold to withstand dragons… or contain them. So we flew to the island and Fishlegs commanded the Quakens to destroy the mostly built stronghold. It brings me great pleasure to see it be destroyed, reduced to nothing but rubble and debris.

Fishlegs had set the Quakens free, I did end up petting one, caressing the scales of the dragon as they purred happily at the affection. We flew them to Dark Deep. I showed more of my affection to the dragons before we them there in their retirement. I could understand why Fishlegs was so affectionate to Meatlug before this, but I understand it even more now.

I do, kinda?, have my own Gronckle, but I wouldn't say he’s mine solely because of the fact that I don't ride him. I’ve grown used to playing with that Gronckle, from what I can tell, he has a weird playing style, often stealing my shirt and enjoying a good game of cat and mouse between us. Meatlug doesn’t steal shirts but she steals smaller items, very obviously she gives them back after the game is over but Fishlegs mentioned it was just a friendly dragon thing some of the more friendlier dragons do to bond.

I still don’t have a letter for Dagur, all the words I write just… they don’t turn out right, they don’t sound like how I want them to sound. I… I don't like showing others how vulnerable I can be and talking, or well… writing to Dagur seems to make me feel that way. I feel safe writing to him, but… imagining him reading my letter to him… it feels… weird… like, a burning and wriggling sensation in my stomach, my heart pounding hard in my chest, my face burning and my palms sweaty with nerves.

Bon the Ruthless doesn’t get nervous, The Bear doesn’t feel that either. I’m just overthinking it at this point. I should just write out a letter, it doesn't matter if it isn’t perfect, and send it to him… but what do I write? What should I tell him? Does… Would he even care? Dagur makes me nervous. I want the letter to be perfect, for if it isn’t perfect then it isn’t worthy of his time to read. He didn’t ask any questions, where do I begin with my letter?

My native language is Hungarian. Now Idk if ya'll know anything about the Hungarian lang, but it isn't a fairy tale, very difficult to learn, takes time and practice. Even native speakers have problems with it sometimes.

Sooo, I'm going to start with the 'okay' ones to the 'who?'. (Ofc, just for fun, translators always do their best. ❤)

(I won't give the proper pronounciation for the words, because that would make this post an hour long, to write and to read, too.)

Valka, Astrid and Eret (son of Eret 💅) stayed the same. Heather is Hanga, which is a real, used Hungarian name.

Toothless is Fogatlan, which is the exact same. Fog means tooth, -atlan means the lack of smthng (we lit have 6 different ones: -talan, -telen, -atlan, -etlen, -tlan, -tlen; and you connect it to words based on grammar rules).

Snotlout is Takonypóc. Takony means snot, póc is a kind of fish 💀, but the two together lose their og meaning, and it can be used to say someone is yet an immature child, used to humiliate mostly young adult men.

Ruff and Tuff, let me tell you, are Kőfej és Fafej. Kő means stone, fa means wood, fej means head, és means and.

Fishlegs is Halvér. Hal means fish (singular), vér means blood. Someone who is halvérű (adj) (lit meaning their blood is fish blood, I'm not going to elaborate on that ű, because Hungarian has a lot of that shit), is calm and has a rather cold personality.

Hiccup is Hablaty. Hablaty is a kind of speech that has no real meaning behind it, so the person who "hablatyol" (singular they) is talking about everything but really, nothing.

NOW TO THE MORE CONFUSING ONES!

Gobber is... I'm sorry, it's just. Gobber is Bélhangos. Bél means gut, hang means sound, but see that little -os? Yeah, in this case, that makes it "loud". So his name literally means someone who has loud guts.

Stoick is the funniest, I think. Stoick is Pléhpofa. Pléh means tin, pot or vessel made from metal, or metal sheet, and pofa is face (but in a more animalistic way, the normal way of saying face is saying arc). Again, the two together can be used to describe someone who has a bored face or lit antipathetic, and yes, it IS a real word. My poor man, they did him dirty.

I think I'm done. I encourage you to learn Hungarian, because it is one of the most beautiful languages imo, but at the same time, run if you see ű or ő.

Tuffnut calls Snotlout ‘bro’ in Snotlout’s Angels. Tuff called Hiccup ‘sister’ in Dragon Eye of the Beholder (which yeah, wrong sib-term for Hiccup’s gender).

I’m sure there are other examples of the gang calling each other ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ (not counting the twins).

And also, I love that when Astrid delivers the funeral prayer in Buffalord Soldier she’s surrounded by her brothers and sisters as she delivers a line about ‘There do I see my father, and my mother, and my brothers and sisters’.

KEEP IT UP, GANG, I LOVE IT. Call each other those terms! You are brothers and sisters.

I just wanna hear Hiccup call them ‘sister’ or ‘brother’. Not just Dagur. (And also call Toothless ‘brother’).

fuck it. time to post content that caters exactly only to me. can be read as platonic or romantic. it's christmas season, aka rewatch-gotnf-every-day season, and this time I just couldn't get over how cute the hatchlings are ●_●

Stormfly snored in a corner by the hearth, her chest rising and falling in time with steady puffs of steam from her nostrils. She didn't stir when the door creaked open, didn't flinch at the rush of snow and cold air or the click of the handle that shut it out.

Her mate and father of her hatchlings, a turquoise Deadly Nadder by the name of Shiverthorn, had joined the first fishing expedition following the ice thaw. His rider wasn't much of a fisherman, though, so Kadlae Brodisson had stayed behind on Berk as one of the number of vikings enthusiastic to care for the new hatchlings.

He guided his little sister into the house, holding a finger to his lips so that she copied his silence. Still, a soft gasp escaped her lips as she spotted the nest of furs across the room. 

"Hey Astrid," Kadlae murmured as he clung fast to his sister with one hand and pulled down his snow-sodden cloak with the other, "just making the rounds. Do you mind if Otta says hi?"

"Hi, of course not!" Astrid matched his volume, opening her arms to Otta from under the heavy bear pelt she was wrapped in. It was her father's; both her parents and older siblings were away on the fishing trip, leaving her in charge of the Hofferson house.

Otta rushed over, her little boots leaving snowy footprints. She jumped into Astrid's arms, who fell flat on her back upon impact, moaning balefully as if all the air in her lungs had been forced out. Stormfly cracked open an eye only to decide there was no trouble and settled again. Otta crawled over Astrid's chest to see her face, looking mildly worried. She giggled when Astrid smiled and righted herself.

Kadlae, reassured that Astrid could handle the bundle of adventure that was his sister, knelt by the nest of furs with them. He watched as the warrior helped Otta settle in her lap, then peered into the mess of thick pelts. 

There, nestled in a warm purring pile, lay three Deadly Nadder hatchlings. The biggest was a bold violet, her tiny wings spread over her siblings. The green runt wriggled under his sister's head, trying to get comfortable, but only ended up with his sapphire sister's tail in his face instead. Lucky for him her spines were still soft and blunt; that would soon change.

Kadlae was currently the closest thing Berk had to a dragon doctor, so he carefully examined each of the hatchlings, gently lifting them from the nest. With each one he deemed healthy, they were handed to Otta to hold. Having just woken up, the hatchlings were mostly unbothered by being handled, happy enough to sit and enjoy pets. His sister was cautiously gentle, her touch feathery.

Otta stared at the green hatchling in her lap with wonder. He had been the last to be examined - and proven to be in perfect health - and looked right at home in the young girl's arms.

Astrid, cradling the other two, looked at Kadlae as he stoked the fire. "Have you checked in with the others yet?"

Kadlae nodded in the affirmative. "Everyone's doing alright. You know Fishlegs is right at home."

"And Snotlout?"

Kadlae paused, reflecting on his visit to the Jorgenson household. "Surprisingly in his element. When I got there, he and his mother were knitting little jumpers for the hatchlings."

"They were so cute!" Otta piped up.

Astrid giggled. "Can't they produce their own fire yet?"

"It seems not. For all their firepower as adults, they're the most vulnerable when young."

Astrid nodded. That seemed reasonable enough. This was Berk's first winter with dragons, and as such they were still learning about their tiny tooth stage. The whole Rookery Island fiasco had been a shock - to understate. 

Before the peace, it had been rare for a Viking to hesitate upon seeing a defenseless dragon. There was so much they'd never known about dragons before, and this stage was the most delicate. Guessing could be the difference between life or death.

The conversation died down as their focus shifted to the hatchlings getting up to play in their nest. Stormfly rolled over in her sleep, easing out a long relaxed breath.

Astrid gave Otta a bone gnawed by tiny teeth to entertain them with, then caught Kadlae's eye. A silent conversation commenced - the outcome of which the healer had no chance of deciding. He sighed.

"Otta," he called, effectively getting his sister's attention, "would you like to train one of the hatchlings once they're old enough? You can go to the dragon academy with your friends."

"Have a Deadly Nadder like you?" The young girl gasped, wide eyed at the prospect.

Kadlae smiled, unexpectedly touched. He nodded. Otta hugged the green hatchling tighter to her chest. (He'd crawled back to her, tired out by his rambunctious siblings.)

"Do you want to choose his name?" Astrid asked softly. She bent to meet Otta's gaze, fringe falling over her left eye.

Otta took a long intense moment to decide, eyebrows furrowed as she stared at the little Nadder, taking in his unique features. Finally, she declared proudly, "Spike!"

Kadlae's eye twitched. Astrid's passive smile transformed into something more frightening. "That's great," they hissed past creaking teeth. 

Appeased, Otta went back to petting Spike, who was unfazed by what he had just been subjected to.

Maybe letting children name creatures wasn't such a good idea. Stabby the sword they could handle. Chicken the chicken was niche. But the shame of giving a living breathing intelligent fire-breathing animal a name howlingly worse than anything Vikings could conceive for their own children? There had to be a line drawn somewhere.

(Ultimately, Spike was renamed Crumb in lieu of adolescent shenanigans when his rider was older and so wiser to her unfashionable choice. If Otta hated one thing it was allowing herself to be predictable. 'Crumb' was a marginal improvement.)

First, I know many people don’t like THW. I know some of the the character portrayals weren’t good, or didn’t show development. Like for the Riders, considering that they did have development in the shows that were canon and came out before the release. But I like to look into it a little sometimes because I love my Hiccstrid and see what I like and don’t like. So no hate please. Also, this is my opinion so don’t go typing and saying I’m wrong please. This was a lot to type and i typed it late at night so, maybe there will be errors. Other than that, have a great time reading this very long post. (But it’s not the longest I’ve seen, especially for an analysis)

SO, let’s get started.

We all know this scene:

There are a few things that could have made it even more meaningful and sad. (MY OPINION)

So let’s begin. Here, you see Toothless roar something that we can only assume to be orders to follow the Lightfury to the Hidden World. Then the Lightfury leads the dragons away.

But Toothless stays behind.

Probably looking back to Hiccup, asking if he was sure he could go, or looking back one last time.

So here comes my point. Again, the THW portrayals didn’t have much development show through, but they DID have development! RTTE, ROB, DOB, and all the others are CANON. They did happen, no matter how bad the THW portrayals were. So for those who have watched the ENTIRE series, Race to the Edge, Riders and Defenders of Berk, and EVERYTHING else, the scene would be especially emotional if all the Dragon Riders’ dragons had done the same as Toothless and looked back one last time, together.

Yes, I do understand that Toothless and Hiccup had a stronger bond, but the Riders still had the strongest of the village. They had all connected with the dragons more then anyone else over the years.

Like how Astrid poisoned herself and nearly died to get an antidote when she thought Stormfly was poisoned by the SlitherWings. And there was the time Hookfang lost his fire and was dying, and Snotlout risked getting killed by the Fireworm queen to get the fireworm to Hookfang. And when the Twins had tried to do everything to get Barf and Belch back when they owed a life debt to Hiccup, and then ended up saving Barf and Belch from drowning and Dragon Hunters. Then there was when Fishlegs became Thor Bonecrusher and pushed Meatlug away, but she still saved him from a Scauldron and then Fishlegs saved her when he came back to his senses. For Hiccup and Toothless I don’t need to say anything, because everyone knows about the countless they saved each other.

Just the action of the dragons of The Gang looking back at their human friends before they go, would break my heart. They all were the friends had changed each others’ worlds six years ago. How their lives had been flipped around, and they had to suddenly accept a new reality. Who knew that it would be the best thing that ever happened to any of them? Now it would change once again.

And what about Dragons Edge? They had built a base together, a place to call home. The home where they journeyed from North, to South, to East, and to West! Those lessons learned on their journeys, all the new dragons they found, the enemies they fought, the allies they made, and all the development together. Just thinking about that while watching overwhelms me with nostalgia and how we watched them grow from reckless and adventurous teens, to mostly responsible adults. That’s when the waterworks begin.

Those adventures, the fun, the heartaches, the triumphs, the defeats... EVERYTHING! They had been through EVERYTHING together, all of them, as a team. There would be no more of that. Sure, they knew after Hiccup became Chief that there would be more responsibilities and less fun. Though none of them expected the dragons they love to leave. None of them expected to be on the edge of a cliff, looking at their best friends mournfully... one last time. The best friends,

who were turning around to fly to the end of the world, being separated from each other, and never to experience the thrill of adventure together ever again.

Random HTTYD Headcanons

Someone once tied together the Boneknapper and Death Song, saying that the former would hang around the game sites of the latter and then collect the bones and I agree with that so much. I’d love to re-find that post so I can credit the blog responsible because they are so, so real for this! I had to mention it because it’s such an under-appreciated take. (ETA: I found the original post here, by @dragonjadearts — thank you for this headcanon I think about it all the time.)

Changewings started to put their eggs in trees to deter Cavern Crashers from eating them.

Red Changewings are the ones that inhabit Changewing Island. Green Changewings are from further south.

Male Thunderdrums are actually the primary caretakers of young Thunderdrums. Both parents will look after and protect the eggs until they hatch but after they do the mother often leaves.

Additionally, Thunderdrums will also transport their eggs and/or hatchlings in their mouth.

Thornado and Skullcrusher have actually met. Thornado had gone out when Bing, Bang, and Boom were asleep and visited Berk, hoping to meet up with Stoick alone only to find another dragon by his chair. The encounter was awkward at first for all three parties, with Stoick trying to break the ice, but once the two dragons recognised what they had in common, they became very friendly and respecting of one another.

The Rumblehorn naturally hunts boars as its primary food source. As opposed to fishing for saltwater fish like other dragons, they also fish for freshwater fish like salmon.

Like the Submaripper and Shellfire, and the Skrill and Singetail, the Rumblehorn and Catastrophic Quaken are naturally opposing species.

Dark Deep was originally the home of the Catastrophic Quaken, not the Gronckle. Due to the sheer number of invading Gronckles, the Quaken was then mostly pushed out.

Gronckles are like the rabbits of the dragon world. They can reproduce from a young age and very often and with high egg counts.

Dragons like the Razorwhip, Timberjack, and Typhoomerang have shorter lifespans in comparison to other species.

Barb-shooting dragons grow their spikes like hair/teeth. The spines that are shot out out are ones that are knocked loose by new roots.

The more distinguishable the colours of each head, the older a Zippleback is.

Zipplebacks evolved from a mutation caused by inefficient embryo separation which means most if not all members of the species distantly share the same common ancestor.

Whip & Lash, Bucket and Mulch’s dragon, is actually female.

Bucket is related to the Thorstons.

The twins removed the S from the alphabet in Reign of Fireworms to annoy Snotlout.

The riders have contemplated who is most likely to turn into a Mildew-type, and most of them have come to the agreement that it would be Tuffnut. Chicken is his Fungus.

Mildew actually has a soft spot for Flystorm. Away from the knowing gazes of others he indulges in petting him and giving him fish, muttering “That’s nice,” as he would with Fungus.

Spitelout treats Kingstail better than anyone ever. As such all of his past methodology surrounding dragons is now in vain, and very hypocritical. (That sword analogy? How dare you compare ol’ Kingstail to that, boyo?)

Fishlegs is actually an only child (he’s always stricken me as one and it boggles me if he isn’t). Those kids he teaches in the Gronckle Scouts are actually his younger cousins. They call him ‘uncle’ due to him babysitting a lot and the difference in their ages. Fishlegs has a lot of cousins.

Fishlegs’ mother, Termagant, owns a Snaptrapper by the name of Arrogance, Innocence, Patience & Conscience. This means that Meatlug has older brothers (and a sister. Technically. Allegedly.). At first they were a bit too mischievous/privy with one another for her liking, making them seem like they were hanging up in her a bit, but they eventually got used to one another.

And yes, she makes all six of her children crab cakes.

The Monstrous Nightmare that Valka saves in HTTYD 2 is the one that took Gobber’s hand.

The Night Fury and Light Fury evolved via something similar to the Peppered Moth Evolution. Whichever one was the original species, however, is still unknown.

Gustav is allergic to peanuts.

Fanghook actually has a fear of setting things on fire.

Hiccup sees a lot of his younger self in Gustav, but it frustrates him that Gustav takes a bit more after Snotlout sometimes.

Gustav’s mother actually wanted to call him “Hiccup” (being the runt) but didn’t want to upstage the chief or confuse people, so she chose “Gustav” (meaning god’s staff or popular guest) to be ironic.

Snotlout was originally proud to have Gustav model himself after him, but when growing up and maturing on the Edge he realised that Gustav was or could be reckless because of it and started to resent him for being a “cheap copy” of him.

Hookfang has a soft spot for Gustav, mostly when he was younger. Since Gustav got Fanghook, his patience has been less withstanding.

The dragon with the least patience for kids is actually Stormfly. Just after would be either Barf & Belch or Hookfang, but by a long shot. Hookfang holds more patience for younger kids than older ones.

Spitelout for some reason shows more outwards appreciation towards Gustav, but argues with him over being leader of the A Team.

adsjhfgdfd i was gonna joke httyd but that’s a lie. even tho sometimes it’s really like. god. people be doing the worst shit in the tags, making this fandom a drag. maybe ????hiccup. like post-rtte he’s repulsive and i HATe the “character arc” they give him like post rob/dob.... princess outpost is funny but i can’t stand it being shown narratively as good or right, or even okay.

listen, i love eret, but dreamworks really was like “we’re gonna sacrifice our original characters for his dude we do nothing with :)” and people really ate it up???as he exists now in canon he’s ????? unnecessary. you could have both httyd2 and httyd3 without him - or at least just as a background character without the redemption!!!! because it was a waste of screen time to have ASTRID be enough as herself to cause eret’s change of heart & once again prove hiccup right, and then???? have hiccup fight the bad guys anyway bc idk what??? people can’t change.  httyd2 b like “shows ppl are capable of meaningful change” “ok dudes can’t change gotta fuckign RUIN his captive dragon :)” what a fucking let down. httyd2 rlly be like “httyd sucks and i hate it fuck you”

Fav thing about them: gonna stop bein h*rny for him for a sec and say that his sass is one of the funniest parts of the series. hiccup’s sarcastic lines were p much the only times i genuinely laughed during riders/defenders of berk. not tryin to shit on the writing here, cuz i get that it’s aimed at kids who probably found the series a lot more funny than i did. just personally not my type of humor. also httyd was my fav movie as a kid (and still is!!) so there’s a little bit of nostalgia mixed in there. he was one of the og faves.

Least fav thing: i mean. what’s not to like.

Fav Line: that one part in riders of berk (im p sure ep19) where he’s called into the great hall and is greeted by a bunch of angry lookin men with no idea as to why and the first thing out of his mouth is “i’d just like to say, in my own defense: i cannot control snotlout or the twins 24 hours a day”. and his “there were dragons when i was a boy” bit from the books, cuz like damn bro. go off.

Random headcanon: oh! i can actually say this, since you know who im talking about: i feel like he and blake would get along!!! they’re both nerdy sweethearts and i think they would have a lot of fun sharing their ideas for inventions n stuff!! he wears goggles in one episode and literally all i could think was “blake”

Unpopular opinion: 1) his outfit in race to the edge was the nicest one out of any of them, and every time i see him in his httyd 2 or 3 outfit i get disappointed cuz it just looks so dull in comparison. he’s not goth enough to wear all that black and he looks much nicer in red. i just wish it coulda been in one of the movies or smth cuz i woulda loved to see it animated with that quality. 2) i don’t know if this is unpopular or not, but hiccup is a lot stronger than he looks!! that part in zippleback experience when he punched snotlout hard enough to knock several of his teeth out made me so proud :’3 he can sometimes hold his own in a fight, even without toothless. he’s strong enough to block viggo’s attacks during the sword fight in triple cross and when he can’t beat his enemies through pure physical strength (which is always), he finds ways to outsmart them or use his size to his advantage. he may not be as good a fighter as the other riders, but he’s not helpless. 3) beard!hiccup bad. the only character who is allowed to grow facial hair is blake porter.

Astrid and Heather made her male comrades look more than once like idiots. In the first movie men and woman fought side by side like equals. In the series and following movies the focus got more and more on the femals being smarter and often stronger than her male couterparts. Esprecial the Jorgensons were mostly portrayed as idiots. Best example: Valka winning against Spitlout in armwrestling.

Welllllll... the Jorgensons are a special case, aren’t they? No one likes big mouths, and they’ve got some of the biggest of all. What everyone does like is seeing arrogant characters get knocked down a peg, which is probably where a lot of it comes from. It is kinda... uhuh... that they saw being beaten by women as the best way to humiliate them.

About the other message, yeah, I agree that they portray them that way, for the same reason that I talked about in the first post: too afraid to make fun of them and provoke the hordes. In the movies, though, it’s a lot more tolerable because they also get focus. It’s not just that they’re more competent, it’s that they’re not the comedic relief, which means a different thing in the movies, which are comedic, but not a comedy, and in the series, which are much more of a comedy and so the funniest characters will be the most favored. Hell, even freaking Stoick is a comedic relief character in rtte! In the movies, Astrid does stuff other than lord it over people and kick ass, and when she kicks ass it’s not really framed in comparison to others’ incompetence but as a thing of its own. She kicks ass because she’s great, not because she’s greater. She gets flaws that affect the plot! In the series, how they treat Astrid and Heather is extra noticeable because they don’t make mistakes, which means they don’t have conflict unless they’re scared for their lives (external conflict) or their dragons’ lives (internal conflict, but be real, is it even half as interesting as episodes when Snotlout is worried about Hookfang? No, because these kind of episodes shed light on the great love between them that often goes unsaid and buried between hostilities. Astrid and Stormfly’s relationship is... well... perfect. Stormfly doesn’t even make fun of Astrid the way Toothless does to Hiccup to give her a bit of extra personality). More often that not, they’re vehicles to the others’ plots. 

Heather’s... a special case, because she doesn’t belong in a PG show at all, much less a comedy (although I’m still annoyed because it still seems unequal. Especially after that brilliant scene when she breaks something with her axe in Family on the Edge. It was hilarious!)

Anyway, the big problem for me is the comparison. In the movies it’s not as noticeable because, like I said, the female characters are great even without the other characters to bounce off of. Even in, say, httyd 1, where Astrid is the best in everything Dragon Training, it comes from something none of the other, not even Hiccup, has: focus. Discipline. A grim approach to life, tbh. And you know what? She gets made fun of for that. Look at the scene in the mead hall. She gets nitpicky and Ruff drags her for it.

While you’re right that women in the httyd movies are more competent than men (again, because none of them, except for Ruff, who’s one half of a whole idiot, are comedic relief characters), it barely jumps out at you because they’re not usually even compared, unlike in the shows, where they rarely speak unless it’s to play the straight man to one of the other characters, like in Maces and Talons part 2, where Astrid and Heather took out two guards, but the comedy of the situation lay on Fishlegs and the twins alerting the guards and being either comedically scared or comedically confident. Astrid’s outburst in Sandbusted is funny because Tuffnut cries at the word tears. Sorry, Astrid also gives Hiccup advice, can’t forget about that!

Forever

An old man stepped off the boat, returning to a place he’d never thought he’d ever see again. He breathed shakily- and it was not due to whatever things still rattled in his chest- it was due to the fact that what lay before him took his breath away.

The buildings stood the same as when he’d left. They were more weathered, and as he could see just from standing on the creaky port, a few had trees toppled on top, or trees going straight through the roofs. Some had decayed over time and were crumbling where they stood, while others looked like they’d been sacrificed to Mother Nature’s storms. 

The colors that were once so vibrant were barely recognizable. The paint had mostly peeled off by now, leaving barren brown or grey wood, giving the place a ghostly appearance. 

The old man stumbled a step forward, his heavy fur cape fluttering in the breeze. An old woman stepped up beside him, her grey hair streaked with gold.

“Hiccup, you don’t have to do this.” She said. She grabbed his arm, as if to stop him. “Hiccup-” 

“Astrid, I-” He graveled, pulling away. His voice was the same, only weathered. Still nasally, only a little deeper then it once was. The breeze gusted past, as if it recognized him. “I need to do this.” he finished softly.

Several others were on the boat still, watching, letting him go first. There were only four now, the fifth having passed on a few years prior. Snotlout. As spitely as ever, had always said he’d be the one to die last. And as cruel fate would have it, he was the first to go.

The old man’s prosthetic creaked as he made his way across the weather boards of the pier. He had to pull himself over a few obstacles in the way, but it was as if the years were melting away with each step he took, and he was that young boy again, racing from Trader Johan’s boat to his father’s house to show off the new trinket he’d traded. 

He tried not to the think too much on the large black winged shadow that would’ve followed him. 

Hiccup had a vague recollection that the others were slow to follow. He lost himself to his thoughts and memories. As he turned down a street, one thing would lead to another. “This was where we first held the dragon races.” “This is where Dad tripped over Agur’s son and fell into a barrel of foreign fruit.” “This is where Astrid and I had our first real kiss.” “This is where-” And the list went on and on.

He’d expected the onslaught of memories to be unbearably painful. He’d built it up in his mind for years and years that seeing the things that had once been would hurt- maybe even kill him. And yet, all he could feel was a weird empty feeling in his gut. It did hurt, but not in the way he expected.

His mind just automatically placed the things that were missing. Yes, that post was used for dragon scouts. That was a feeding trough- why, he could see the Terrible Terrors perched up there all ready!

He was almost giddy with imagination when he reached an overgrown place atop a hill. He paused, and although nothing remained, there was no doubt in his mind that he stood before his father’s house.

“Hey Dad.” He croaked. Not far from the hut was the old weather-worn statue of the old Chief of years past. Stoick the Vast. “You’ve been looking out for this place, haven’t you?” He smiled. Something wet slid down his cheek. He hadn’t realized he was crying.

All that remained of the hut were the stone steps. So there, he sat, looking out over the whole of Berk. 

Home.

He sat there for Thor knows how long. Just looking. He remembered everything. How alive it had been. Now, it was just a shell of its former self. 

Eventually the others- Tuff, Ruff, Fishlegs, and Astrid- found him and clamored up the steps to sit by his side. They all sat there for almost an hour, and no one said a word.

“So.” Ruff said. Tuffnut grunted and shifted. He sniffled loudly and wiped his nose with his sleeve.

Finally, Hiccup spoke, “I miss it.” His sob was sharp, and it hurt. His back ached from sitting on the hard ground for so long, and his chest hurt from the pent up emotions. 

Somehow they all wound up in an entangled embrace. There was no doubt they were all crying, but once they were dried up and there were no tears left to shed, they stood and gave the place that had once been home one last look before they returned to the only ship in the bay. 

Hiccup fell behind, not wanting the other’s to see how much he faltered. He now understood why the old men and woman had wanted to move back those many years ago. He felt the wild urgent need to stay rooted to where he stood. Because this was home. Maybe if he stayed, everything would go back to the way it had once been. 

Everyone else was on the boat now. They were fixing to sail. Yet he stood, his back to the ocean, his eyes on the land. 

He faltered, his gaze settling on the woods. There was a little gap in the trees and he recognized it. It was the trail he’d taken to...

He headed for it.

“Hiccup!?” Astrid called. 

“I-I’ll be back! Just... please- wait here, I’ll be back-” He didn’t even look back as he broke into a jog. The fastest he could really go at this point. Even then his joints protested.

He rushed through the trees. Nearly everything was the same. There some more fallen trees, some more broken branches. It was a little more overgrown than he remembered, but the landmarks remained. There’s that old stump Astrid had perched upon when she’d first met Toothless. There’s the old tree he’d dumped her in. There’s-

He stumbled to a halt. His eyes caught a glint in the distance: a disk. It was the shield. 

He came upon it, and knew he could not budge it, no matter how much he wanted to. The rock had grown up around it, embedding it deep within its hold. But he was somehow able to crawl beneath it, into the overgrown place he knew all too well.

The little lake was beautiful, and it sparkled in the setting sun. The tree that Toothless had hung upside down on was still there, hunched and dying, but there none-the-less. It was just as beautiful as he remembered it being.

And just as painful. 

He collapsed against the stone wall, he shoulders shaking, his cries wavering. He’d thought he didn’t have any tears left to shed, but he was wrong. In fact, he wasn’t sure if they’d ever stop coming.

It might’ve been hours later when Astrid found him. She sat beside him in the dark, taking him into her arms and pressing his head against her chest. “Hiccup.” She cried too. “Oh Hiccup.” 

And the thing was, if he’d been there ten years ago, he might’ve hoped that Toothless would be there. But now, there’d be no chance. They'd’ seen each other years apart- Hiccup had continued returning to that same place where they met year after year after year- one year, it was just Toothless, his kids and the Light Fury nowhere to be found. Until one year, eleven years ago, Toothless himself did not come. Hiccup had tried only once more, with the same results. He’d had to accept the truth.

“I thought- maybe-” He hiccuped harshly. “Just I- it was stupid. So stupid.” 

“Shh, Hiccup, of course it wasn’t.” Astrid kissed his cheek. “I hoped too.”  

They fell asleep there. Hiccup dreamt of times where he flew through the sky on the back of a sleek dragon with a toothless smile. He awoke on the hard grassy ground, still wrapped in Astrid’s arms, and to what he assumed was her way of waking him.

“Astrid?” Something bumped his face again, and he cringed back. 

He blinked his eyes open, giving startled breath at what he saw. Familiar green eyes were nearly overtaken by large pupils. There was no doubt. A Nightfury, right in front of him, stared back.
