In the words of GR, "[the] Goodreads Choice Awards reflect the books that are most popular with our members" -- the people who most use GoodReads are adults who are big time readers of YA and grown-up books. The people who care most about kids books and GN are, well... kids. Kids don't use GoodReads.

You can see the difference for yourself -- just look at MG vs adult books and how many ratings each get. I just randomly looked at DOGMAN: GRIME AND PUNISHMENT. Published in 2020, it's an insanely popular MG GN in an insanely popular series that has sold tens of millions of copies. This installment alone has sold 2.5 million copies. It has 7,816 ratings on GoodReads.

I randomly picked a 2020 book from author Sarah J Maas to compare to. It's called HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD -- not a title I'm familiar with, book one of a series I've never heard of (compared to her other huge series that I def have heard of!!) -- I'm saying, obviously she's a super popular author and this book did great by anyone's reckoning, but it's VERY far from the most popular book by Maas, and has sold a fraction of what GRIME AND PUNISHMENT sold in the same amount of time. It has 492,584 ratings on GoodReads. Her more popular have GR ratings numbers in the millions -- whereas Dav Pilkey, who again, in the real world, sells significantly better than Maas, has ratings that hover in the low thousands across the board.

So to recap: 1) GoodReads just isn't catering toward kids/MG/GN readers; 2) The world in general treats kids/MG/GN books as less-than and "not real" books, this is more of the disrespect we are used to. 3) GR is trash -- er, I MEAN, GR is not an accurate reflection of the real world and real readers. 4) Kids books and GN are not going anywhere.

anyway. PREFACE. i love poetry, but i tend to collect it through pinterest instead of reading poetry collections. which i feel like is probably the better way of reading poetry. that being said i do have a few fave poems:

a poetry collection i have read is crush by richard siken! it's fairly easy to digest if you're new to poetry. but it's very evocative and deeply emotional for me. i love the poems snow and dirty rain, dirty valentine and litany in which certain things are crossed out.

jessica gives me a chill pill by angie sijun lou is one of my favourite poems ever. my favourite quote comes from it, 'I ask Jessica what drowning feels like and she says not everything feels like something else'.

this is a book? this a translation? this is kind of a play? i think it's fair to also call it poetry. antigonick by anne carson. it's a little difficult to parse but it's so worth it. my favourite line is 'a husband or a child can be replaced but who can grow me a new brother'.

this last one is not technically a poem. it's a game transcript which u should play. but it reads very much as a long poem/short story. it counts to me. anatomy by kitty horrorshow. if you're into haunted houses/body horror you'll like this. i love it very much, i think about it all the time. this is one of my many favorite lines from it: 'When a house is both hungry and awake, every room becomes a mouth.'

okay so that's poetry done. here are my favourite books:

annihilation by jeff vandermeer. if you've seen the movie (with natalie portman) and have no idea about the book i urge u to ignore the movie and read the book. it's science fiction/horror adjacent. i find the main character incredibly compelling and i love the writing style and the way vandermeer talks about nature. it's just a stunning book and has def influenced my writing even if it's not terribly obvious.

you feel it just below the ribs by jeffery cranor and janina matthewson. this is also science fiction. it's written in the world of a podcast i listen to, within the wires. i approached it with context on the world so i'm not sure how it would come across to someone with less context. regardless i think it's fantastically written. i'm not sure how to describe it other than to say i really connected with it emotionally.

the raven cycle series by maggie stiefvater. this is a young adult paranormal fantasy series. in my opinion it's not a typical YA series. rather than focusing overly on romance or love triangles it instead focuses deeply on incredibly well-rounded and multi-faceted characters, the power of friendship😭 and coming of age. romance is there but it's treated with such reverence. it's such a special series and stiefvater is a wonderful writer.

our wives under the sea by julia armfield is an exploration of grief and loss wrapped up in an abstract horror book. i can't describe how it made me feel but i think everyone should read it.

i wont get into these but also: my year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh, the hunger games series, the girls by emma cline and the grace year by kim liggett (<-i love the first 3/4s of this book. i hate the last 1/4. its worth it for the 3/4s imo).

fantastic and utterly satisfying end to the series. i'm always trying to pitch these books as much as possible because the magic system is one of my favourites ever and rjb has an understanding of themes if i've ever seen one

still love this genre-bending mind-fuckery of a book. it's an interesting take on grief and a positive look at the potentiality of both the universe and individuals

utterly shocked considering how little i liked the first book but i found this one compulsively readable and absurdly fun. it still reads like someone very online wrote it but i enjoyed the ride this time

solid and pretty standard YA contemporary that has some bonus fun fantasy that made it much easier to swallow for someone who doesn't like YA contemporaries very much

a power unbound - freya marske ★★★★☆ (historical fantasy romance)

decent conclusion to the series and a hot romance that kept me invested, but the "plot" dragged and took up so much pagetime

bloodmarked - tracy deonn ★★★★☆ (YA fantasy)

obvious second book syndrome with wacky pacing and a bloated cast of characters, but it handled a lot of trope-y YA stuff pretty deftly and i am deeply curious where this plot is going to lead

moon of the turning leaves - waubgeshig rice ★★★★☆ (post-apocalyptic)

decent sequel that trades in the horror of the first book for a more survivalist bent. i don't think it's particularly interesting if you don't already like these sorts of books, but i do, so i liked this one as well

the trial of henry kissinger - christopher hitchens ★★★★☆ (political non-fiction)

def not kissinger for babies but the writing was solid and easy to follow, even if i knew nothing about the politics going in

eileen - ottessa moshfegh ★★★☆☆ (thriller)

relentlessly unpleasant to read but the frame story gave it an interesting flair. i've always found ottessa moshfegh's works worth reading even if i don't exactly enjoy them

annihilation - jeff vandermeer ★★★☆☆ (scifi)

extremely slow to start but it does eventually cohere into something? the writing was beautiful and i understand why everyone highlights it as atmospheric

complete nothing of a book to me. wasn't good, wasn't bad, totally fine, just didn't make me feel anything and i probably won't ever think about it again

the perfect crimes of marian hayes - cat sebastian ★★★☆☆ (historical romance)

the plot of this book was so so bad and unfortunately rather important to the flow but it did feature two character tropes and a romance that were exactly my type of shit. i would describe this as "if you closed both eyes and ignored the plot entirely it's almost an astrid/wulf fic" and that's how i had fun

you made a fool of death with your beauty - akwaeke emezi ★★★☆☆ (romance)

the banter and relationship with the FMC's best friend was by far the best part of the book. i liked the premise of the main romance, but it ended up being insta-love despite the incredible setup. also read like it was so concerned with being beautiful that it forgot to be horny or passionate or even interesting

lumberjanes vol. 1-2 - n.d. stevensen et al. ★★☆☆☆ (children's graphic novel)

tried to be coherent in the wrong sorts of ways and didn't lean into childish whimsy the way it should have, but the art was cute. it wasn't bad but i'd never choose to give it to a kid

so far i've read 61 books this year (which is below my goal grrr but whatever. when life hits you or something) so it's a tough decision. these are in no particular order:

once there were wolves - charlotte mcconaghy | a really haunting novel set in the scottish highlands revolving around a woman who is working on a project to rewild wolves to the area. the writing is brain-meltingly beautiful. please look up the content warnings tho!

middlegame - seanan mcguire | i do not know how to explain this one except it is absolutely brilliant??? about a boy and a girl with very special talents in language and maths, respectively (and they're not in love!). and like, alchemy and human experimentation. it's very weird but alas, i love weird books

girl, woman, other - bernardine evaristo | a beautifully interwoven story about the lives of twelve black British women (& other) that explores family and love in such a compelling way!!! it certainly didn't win the booker prize without reason

bunny - mona awad | if you like weird things this is the book for you. also if you enjoy unreliable narration, (toxic) female friendships and dark academia. it's a girl's right to be weird and slightly cult-ish

yellowface - r.f. kuang | i cannot make this list without mentioning r.f. kuang bc she is the loml. this book is not my favorite by her but it was certainly a banger, as always. if you're interested in topics of post-colonialism and systemic racism you should never miss out on her books

the deep - solomon rivers | magical alternate history about a mysterious mermaid population in a vaguely post-apocalyptic world. lovely portrayal of culture, (shared) memory and generational trauma

she who became the sun - shelley parker-chan | just another asian-inspired fantasy to add to my list of favorites because i just love them so much. this one was so fun and has queer and nb rep!!!

none of this is serious - catherine prasifka | i didn't really ENJOY reading this bc it kept calling me tf out the whole time. if you, like me, find yourself living in existential dread, the anxiety of a small rabbit being chased by lions, and a crippling social media addiction, this will be a fun one to get through

the raven cycle - maggie stiefvater | i've just finished my THIRD reread of this series in 5 or so odd years. yes it is that good. if you haven't read it GO NOW. it's ya but i promise it's not very ya-ish. paranormal fantasy / magical realism / legends and the most likable cast of characters you will ever see (did you say: where can i find ya books with female mcs that have a personality? the answer is HERE)

her body and other parties - carmen maria machado | i've never really read a short story collection before so this was an interesting experience. i loved some of them more than others but they're def worth a read, some even mind-boggling

sorry for rambling but if you truly expect an english major to not go on a rant about books you've been sorely mistaken

Okazaki, Week 1

Week 1 complete! When I first arrived, I was pretty ok with Hiragana and could barely make out Katakana. By the end of the first week... well, I can read Hiragana pretty well! That said, I've learned a decent amount of vocabulary and learned how to ask questions when I don't understand something, so that's a plus. We are using the Marugoto level A1 book and we're up to section 7 in it now. Yesterday we had an "interview" that felt more like a conversation... just in Japanese. And I feel like I did pretty well, so that's good! I think?

The above picture is of a park I get to walk through twice a day! Honestly it's not much more than a rainwater catchment pond, but in Japan they've stocked it with koi and planted cherry trees around a walking path they've built around it. In the states, it'd basically have a big chain-link fence blocking people from getting close. I've noticed that most of the houses around also have extremely well-manicured gardens in very, very small spaces featuring a plethora of plant types. I haven't really seen much in the way of lawns at all, although vacant lots certainly fill with grasses and weeds pretty rapidly.

I've been utilizing the corner "konbini" (convenience store) for dinners and such. For lunches, there's a regular grocery store nearly in spitting distance of Yamasa, so I've been picking up onigiri (jelly donuts) there. Honestly, even at 24hr konbinis, things are surprisingly cheap here. I've also now checked out not one, but two(!) multi-story malls nearby and... well, I think I've come to the conclusion that if you pay people a living wage and then some, they'll have money in their pockets that they can then use to purchase nifty things they actually want. In the states, malls are a dying breed, and everyone blames online retail. I don't think that's the real problem.

This evening I decided to take a short hike up to a nearby observation deck... thing. Kyogamine Tenbodai, per the maps of Google anyway. It's atop the closest foothill of a mountain chain. I'm still tryina get used to how time works here. It's not as bad as when I was in Maine and the sun thought it was a good idea to rise at 4 in the morning, but it's still like 2 hours off of what I'm used to. By the time I got to the park, it was already getting dark. And I still had way too many stairs to climb.

But climb them I did. And climb. And climb. By the time I got to the top, I was drenched in sweat. But it was so totally worth it. Why? Well, watch the video! Sorry that the quality isn't the best, phone cameras don't handle the dark well. Then, I got to climb back down. All those so many much stairs.

Worth it? Most def.

Emerging authors person here! I need to pick an emerging author for a class but I don't really pick up brand new books till years after, so I just have no clue. I like fantasy and scifi best and I don't really like romance!

haha okay sure. well off the top of my head here's some recent debut sff books I liked a lot (that have romance generally as a side thing, if any). This is a very random list! but maybe there's something here you'd be interested in

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei - beautiful sci-fi mystery/thriller about a murder on a deep space mission, not really any romance. she has another book coming out this year too

Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel - historical fantasy retelling, with an aroace MC. and she has another book that just came out, I'm about to read it

The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera - a very weird and surreal Sri Lankan fantasy that is def not for everyone but also I can't stop thinking about it.. (he has a lot of short story publications under his belt but I believe this is his debut novel)

The Butterfly Assassin - YA thriller / dystopian trilogy, just completed (I haven't read book 3 yet!), about a traumatised teen assassin trying to live a normal life. no romance

The Spider and Her Demons by sydney khoo - YA paranormal about a girl who's part spider demon and accidentally eats a man in front of the popular girl. they become friends

idk what your class counts as recent/emerging but The Scapegracers (2020) by H.A. Clarke is a recently completed YA trilogy about feral teen witches that I love SO so much. also and his adult debut Metal From Heaven comes out later this year (I read an arc it's great)

Fallen Thorns by Harvey Oliver Baxter - aroace urban fantasy/academia vibes vampire coming of age

To Shape A Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose - YA* fantasy about an Indigenous girl who finds a dragon and is made to go to the coloniser's dragon school. has the starts of f/f/m polyamory subplot (*is marketed as adult but feels YA to me, maybe it'll age up with the series though)

also if if counts The Vanished Birds (2020) and The Spear Cuts Through Water (2022) by Simon Jimenez - the vanished birds is a great sci-fi and spear is one of the best fantasy books I've read in years (I guess I'd consider it to have a significant romance but also it's not like A Romance where that takes up most of the plot, if that makes sense. it's the kind of subtle romance my aro ass loves anyway.)

Hello! First off, thank you so much for reblogging my Isekai'd reader post, I'm glad you liked it! I saw in your carrd that you're open to doing Matchups, so if that's true, I hope it's okay to ask for one for Pokemon Sword and Shield. Here's my info, sorry if there's too much:

I’m 20 years old and Bisexual. I also have Autism, ADHD and some health issues like weak bones and scoliosis. I’d probably prefer to be shipped with either a Gym Leader or Champion from Galar, and definitely someone who’s an adult lol. I’m really short, only 5’ (152 cm) at most, with long, wavy and fluffy brown hair. My two favorite hairstyles to do are either the Legolas-style half-ponytail (I don’t know how to describe it…) or two braids hanging over my shoulders. I either look kinda disheveled or I’m really dressed up, there’s seemingly no in-between. I also wear glasses and am very slender. 

I’d probably be really good friends with Allister because I’d definitely be studying Ghost Pokemon, and also I can be very gentle with people. Helping others makes me feel better so I always make a point of being friendly and helpful with everyone I meet. I’d 100% be some kind of researcher in Galar. I'd probably meet them by accompanying Allister to an event with all the other Gym Leaders because he's shy. 

I’m actually a pretty fun person with a witty and sometimes dirty sense of humor, though I’m also very sweet and polite. I enjoy drawing and baking, and I will not stop writing for the life of me. I write whenever possible, and I write very fast too. I once finished an entire nonfiction book in a week. I get flustered easily but I don't have a hard time connecting with people, I'm really not afraid to go up and ask for things. Whenever I do get flustered I giggle a lot (I've been told I have a very cute laugh) and tend to cover my face with my hands. I also have a weird habit of calling people endearing names like "honey" and "sweetie" at random. I give really good advice too.

I'm very soft but have been called argumentative before, but I generally give passes easier than some. I HATE making people feel bad. But if you insult someone I care about there is no mercy tbh. So yeah, sweet but fierce when provoked. I'm very protective over my loved ones. I'm always a little overprepared for everything and have a hard time accepting compliments.

🔥 I feel like Kabu is really just drawn to you! Not only do you care extremely for the people around you, but you don’t let people walk all over you! It’s something that attracted him to you and made him want to get to know you more.

🔥 But when you two first met, it was at some dinner party celebrating the newest Champion’s rise to the throne. Everyone, and Leon ofc, were there alongside the new Champion. So when he saw you were, he was rather confused as it was an event for them, but then he caught sight of Allister clinging to your leg.

🔥 He honestly thought you were his parent, rather than his emotional support. So he def made a fool of himself when he introduced himself to you and told you that he never thought he’d meet the shy boy's parent.

🔥 You laughed so hard at the poor man, you missed how red his face got and how smoke almost came out of his ears. Allister found the situation just as funny, even if he didn’t express it.

🔥 Once you moved in with Kabu when your relationship progressed, his favorite thing to do with you is doing your hair in the morning. He always took note of how you styled it, and one morning he asked to do your hair.

🔥 You agreed, as you wanted to see what he would do, and you were surprised to see he managed to do your usual hairstyles- probably even better than you.

🔥 It warmed your heart to know that he noticed these small details about you. So now every morning before you two go to work, he does your hair for you and kisses the crown of your head before your lips to wish you a good day.

🔥 On your days off, you two often go out to do domestic things like shopping for groceries, doing laundry, and cleaning the house up. Sometimes Allister joins in on your hangouts, and it’s become a thing now.

🔥 In a way, Allister has become your son, and it makes you happy to see Kabu feels the same way.

🔥 Kabu feels like you’d be a good parent. The bag you carry with you always has something he or Allister, even those around you, need. Like band-aids, snacks, tissues, pain medication, etc. Someone could name something and you’d more than likely have it. He likes how prepared you are. It makes him less worried about your well-being when he’s not around, because he knows you can take care of yourself.

🔥 The first time Kabu got a taste of your rage, it was when someone couldn’t understand Allister when he decided to be brave one day and order his own food, but obviously his anxiety got the best of him. The vendor snapped at Allister and you didn’t hesitate to drag the vendor through the dirt, and although you said some unsavory things, Kabu felt himself blush.

🔥 It was just attractive. Very very attractive. He showed you how much he loved that side of you later that evening.

🔥 Overall, Kabu feels like he lucked out with you. You’re the person of his dreams and he can’t wait to see what else the future has in store for you two.

🌲 How deeply does your OC feel? Are they typically empathetic or do they have a hard time connecting with others in this way? What are they like when offering support and comfort to someone they care for?

Oh she can def vibe with someone. Mechanically she has 2 empathy dots so like, she’s decent at it. Better with kids :) She’s really good with kids. 

She also isn’t above doing a little peeping into folks fate to see if there is something deeper to it. Soon, she is gonna get better at mind magic too and be able to sense how people feel real easily so she won’t even need the empathy dots for that. But yeah she does not have a hard time connecting with others. 

As for how they are like offering support, Porphyria is a really hopeful gal :) So if they are in the right mindset for it, she will offer words of encouragement and tell people that everything will work out. And if they know she can do magic with fate and time, they wouldn’t have any reason to disbelieve her so I imagine this is effective. She’d still do this for non-mages of course, just might take more convincing. If they aren’t in the right mindset for that, she is good at figuring that out too and would just give a hug if they are comfortable with it.

Porphyria definitely likes reading and I should have had her bring books with her to the trail… her taste wasn’t super sophisticated. She likes poetry and short stories, the ones that Stick With Ya, you know the ones. But also any by woman authors. Look at this list:

I would say I love how hasty she is lol like it's her flaw but its sooo fun to literally roll before another player does cause I'm like I'm sorry Porphyria would not wait for you to check out this dude's mind before acting. it helps keep the session moving, is fun, and makes for a good story <3 and isn't super dangerous cause she is strong and can fix things. it helps characterize her well too YAYYY

I'm right there with you I love to make him suffer 💕 I've been hanging out with my baby niece (actually cousin) more recently and frequently and so my baby fever is like 💥 right in my face so I have a LOT of ideas for Cece and such. He's so jealous it's unreal. I love it so much 😍 HE'S SO EXTRA but also like really trying to make it casual when he touches her. He's so 😍 She def short-circuited. I probs didn't do a good job of writing it as such because I was focused on how it would feel to have him pick her up hehehehehe thank you for enjoying it 💕

Omg I also have tons of dental issues all the time. The character trait I share most with the MC is that she and I both have cavities ALL the time. I also had to have some reconstructive surgery as well (thanks genetics) plus wisdom teeth. Etc. I had so many issues all at once I genuinely thought I could have been a dentist because I learned so much. I grew up in a small town so my neighbor is actually my dentist but I didn't have the right health insurance for a while to go to her practice (America, ya know?) so it was a lot.

I LOVE a reread of my middle school era books. I think I told you I was a huge Twilight fan. Nothing makes me feel more alive than rereading Twilight snippets 😍 I also loved this trilogy about this girl who could see other people's dreams like really lucidly. I loved it so much and I refuse to part with it through all my book donations. I also read this series that was semi-supernatural? I don't have a better word for it. She could like see the future through touch and through sculpting. I think it was my favorite series ever the male main lead was named Ben and I was OBSESSED. Okay actually I thought of like five more YA books I read and obsessed over so I'm going to stop here before I never shut up 😭

HEAT WAVE POWER OUTAGE. I would sit in the shower. Ugh. 90 🤮 I would scream. It's like 70-80 here. AND the heat compressor broke so my room was a balmy/toasty temperature this morning when I got to work. INSANE. I decorated 😍 Idk if I'm any good at it, but I just enjoy fall a lot and I like fall things. I did what I could. I'm def not a cover every surface but I try to make it look tasteful and not tacky.

I DID have a lovely pretty relaxing weekend. I'm having a pretty good week too *knock on wood* busy but productive 💕

currently reading i'm going to be honest, i tend to read a few books at once, however it is usually one novel and a couple encyclopaedic books, so right now i am reading edgar allan poe's the narrative of arthur gordon pym of nantucket alongside a classical mythology encyclopaedia. i'm also part of a book club and the books that we read together will make an appearance here. we recently read the letters we keep by nisha sharma, so expect a review for that, as well as one for weyward by emilia hart, which we read before that!

reading challenges currently doing a goodreads challenge to read 20 books this year since it has been quite difficult to get back into reading for pleasure + i am obsessed with mike flanagan's the fall of the house of usher on netflix, and i've already watched it twice but before i inevitably watch it for a third time, i've decided to read the tales, poems and novels by edgar allan poe that were referenced in the show; i'll try and include a link to my complete list!

currently listening to i love me some victoria monet and i've had her music on repeat consistently for the last couple years! i have also taken an interest in fleetwood mac, kate bush, and mos def. i've also been keeping up with the kendrick v. drake beef, so i've been listening to quite a bit of his recent releases. i might be willing to make a list (or maybe a playlist - not entirely sure) of some of my favourite songs at the moment.

currently watching not much unfortunately. i spend a lot of time on youtube but i am trying to find a way to watch season 7 of drag race. i've never watched the show before but i'm aware of trixie mattel and katya so i wanted to watch their season. as i mentioned earlier, i am obsessed with the fall of the house of usher on netflix but i am forcing myself to hold off before watching it again.

favourite books suzanne collins' the hunger games series, neil gaiman's american gods, silvia moreno-garcia's mexican gothic, ransom riggs' miss peregrine's peculiar children series (have not finished yet)

what do i like to read i like poetry a lot (though i sometimes struggle to understand it), as well as mythology, all types. i also like fantasy and dystopia and one of my favourite series is the hunger games series by suzanne collins. i am trying to expand my reading horizons, since i read a lot of ya fantasy when i was younger.

i do!! i remember i started learning how to read very young (like in pre-school) but then my parents changed us schools to a hippie school where they would wait until first/second grade to teach us and i was so mad with them cause i just wanted to keep learning ckwjnkjwecw the first book i read may have been one of these really short fairytales my parents had at home, it was like short versions of classics, like the nightingale and the rose, i loved reading them over and over <3 and i don't think i remember what was my first fanfic i've read, it must have surely been of one of the popular ya book series at the time, like mortal instruments of percy jackson, that was my shit back then lwelkewlve it may have been for the mortal instruments spin off, the infernal devices cause omg i was obsessed with that love triangle!! like would consume all my thoughts (and yes my perfect ending would have been them three staying together kcwnekjwe)

and i'm so sad to say i don't read books anymore :c like fanfics i do and i love it, but having to read so much for uni has def killed my motivation to pick up a book, sometimes i read like poetry or short stories but is very rarely, and almost always in school breaks.

Hello! I really liked your post with sci-fi recommendations that aren't just books by misogynistic men. There are some books on the list already but do you happen to have a list of recs just for novels about robots/androids/AI? Preferably where they are the protagonist? No worries if not! Thanks

augh see i love robots/AIs but i have not read NEARLY enough books w them as main characters 😔 i can name a couple u might wanna check out tho!

klara and the sun by kazuo ishiguro (standalone, from the POV of a nanny robot taking care of a sick girl) is pretty interesting, esp in regards to the idea of robots having their own mythos and superstitions. v slow and thoughtful (tho a bit too uneventful for my tastes)

ted chiang has a couple good short stories about robots - exhalation (found in the short story collection of the same name) is a personal fav of mine! (there's also the novella "the lifecycle of software objects" - in same collection - but while i adore most of his stuff i really didn't like that one lol)

if u like YA, def check out the scorpion rules by erin bow (the prisoners of peace duology)! honestly on most levels it's a pretty average dystopian YA book, but then it also happens to have one of THEE most interesting and complex explorations of posthumanism through AI i've ever seen??? like not even in YA, in general (esp in book 2, it's not a major plot until the end of book 1)

if you're interested in the classics at all, i do recommend Asimov's short story collection I, Robot! it was surprisingly fun and it was cool seeing where the iconic 3 laws of robotics thing originated :)
