remember my vampire au where they can only drink the same blood type they were before they were turned? and how i kind of glossed over how ghost escaped roba’s starvation pit?

he uses his anger and desire for vengeance to distract from the bloodthirst; holds the wretched heat of them close to keep his will strong enough to withstand the urge to feed from the toxic humans roba torments him with, dotted around his bar-less prison like a mocking, poisoned banquet before the destitute

the venom in his fangs turns on him, eating away at his gums and working into his calcified veins; desperately searching for safe blood, for an end to this slow death. it drips from his slack mouth, burning away his lips after melting the sinew in his jaw to the point that he can’t close his mouth anymore; his flat, human teeth loose and falling out by the day with nothing to hold them to his porous jaw

even then, ghost doesn’t waver

until finally, enough time passes that roba's underlings deem him weakened to the point of harmlessness

they get sloppy when they dump the carcasses into the pit; getting closer and closer to the edge and paying less and less attention to the starved, melting vampire left amongst the decomposition

they don't see the body ghost sequestered away; one of the first, festered and putrid, hidden under the ever growing pile and left to be forgotten

they don't see the calculating edge in his eye as he watches its flesh rot and soften; waving it off as longing, as hunger as he looks into eyes melting from their sockets

they don't see ghost sink his fingers into the rotting caverns, giving him the perfect grip to rock the head back and forth as he stares at the hand-dug dirt walls of his prison. ceaseless, repetitive movements, bone grinding on bone, muscle tearing from flesh as he slowly rips the skull free from its spine

they don't see ghost rear back and, using all the hatred and loathing he's let build in the long weeks of his hollow imprisonment, throw it at the vampire about to drop another caustic human on him; striking him in the head and tipping him off balance so he falls...

By general rule, Ashe prefers to give people the benefit of the doubt, and assume the best of most folk, even total strangers. That said, the lack of a second lie doesn't do much to ease him down, because there's... everything else. The other's nonchalance towards his break-in, the fact that he keeps moving things around as if to hide something... And then, bribing, of all things?? Someone is about to find out just how poor of a judgment he made.

"What?? Of course not, that's... That's wrong in so many ways!"

Ashe finally gets out of the doorway and walks in, trying to take a look before Gaius conceals all of the evidence. It's apparently true that he's baking, it seems, but still... He then glances at Gaius again, with a frown that doesn't quite go into scowling territory.

"I may be here to bake too, but, I asked the staff to let me have the kitchen for the night and some ingredients in exchange of some extra chores. You... didn't bring your own, did you."

He wishes and prays that he's wrong. But it may not be more than that, a naive wish.

We talk about Rook being trapped in the fade for weeks but have you considered at all that this means Neve or Bellara are in Elgar’nan’s hands for weeks and weeks too? Like.. the fade prison time + the time it took to battle and get them back.

And I keep thinking about how Elgarn’nan likely honors his sister by peeling Neve apart and seeing what ice her blood can offer just like she said she wanted to do..

Guys I have found the most incredible Languagehat thread

First, I'll point out the length: almost 2k comments! LH comment threads can be quite long and meandering (and the cool thing is its totally acceptable to start posting on them years later & revive the thread; it's like Tumblr!) but that usually means dozens to hundreds of comments. I've only found two threads that that clear four digits, and this one is BY FAR the longest.

At first it's the usual pleasant meanderings of the regulars, but since the topic of this one is "The Indo-European Controversy" cranks soon appear. (I swear, *nothing* gets cranks to show up in your comment sections like Proto-Indo-European!)

First we get some guy trying to suggest that PIE originated in North America. Which, maybe *slightly* less crazy than it sounds given that we're* all bullish on Dene-Yeniseian here, but Na-Dene languages are (mostly) in the close-to-Asia corner of the continent... this guy's just picking languages at random through the continent and pointing at single-word similarities. hmmm)

Anyways his proposals failed to convince the regulars (to say the least) but we got some pretty good jokes out of his nonsense sound-change proposals:

Anyways, that's all good fun, but at the start of it, someone mentioned a blogger called German Dziebel. This name means nothing to me, but it turned out to be an omen of things to come.

Eventually the guy himself shows up in the thread, to chime in withe support for the North American-PIE hypothesis, even double-down on it with claims that genetic evidence supports a back migration from N. America to Eurasia. (It doesn't.) He also wants to completely overturn mainstream PIE root reconstruction and brings his own new cognate sets to the efforts. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence; well, German Dziebel certain provides extraordinary obduracy.

He eventually gets banned for insulting the other commenters, particularly for his strident insistence that only blogging under your real name is valid and all the pseudonymous commenters are trolls.

German Dziebel posted maybe 90 comments before getting banned; we're only about a quarter of the way through the thread now. What really makes this thread go the distance is about a week later when Vladimir Diakoff enters the thread. He positions himself as an interested amateur and support of Dziebel (though he says Dziebel doesn't return his emails), and he's here to further explain (his understanding) of Diakoff's PIE reconstruction proposals and also proposal a few of his own. He's (mostly) much friendly than Dziebel and he Will. Not. Stop. Posting.

This lasts from late November 2015 through late March 2016, when languagehat's host finally persuades some of the other comments to set up a separate blog to discuss Diakoff's proposals. By my count Diakoff racked up almost 500 comments; between him and the people arguing with him we're now more than 90% through the thread. Conversation on the original thread meanders from there, dying down across spring of 2016 with a few resurgences in 2018 and 2019.

And then, in 2023:

I'm afraid of academia.edu so all I can tell you is that the titles seem to match. But if TR and the followup comments are correct that means either:

German Dziebel finally started reading Vladimir Diakoff's emails, and wrote a paper based on his ideas, without listing Diakoff as a co-author (maybe he's in the acknowledgements?)

The guy who got banned for insulting other commenters for not posting under their real names came back a week later with a sock puppet for 500 more comments.

Troubleshooting Photoshop: you just need a manual, a dictionary, and a topographical map of the entire interface to find what setting you fucked up with an accidental shortcut keysmash

Troubleshooting cameras: probably missed a hidden menu or something. Start over from the beginning. Cross your fingers you find it before the setting is moot because the subject of the photo is gone

Troubleshooting computers: try 10 different fixes and find out you should have just rebooted to begin with

Troubleshooting weaving: most likely an issue with the warp

Troubleshooting writing: either the problem is 3 paragraphs back or it's 3 a.m. and nothing makes sense

(Is this a safe space to say that I’ve long thought the reason many/most of the songs on Midnights that aren’t on the surface about her then-relationship were there was because they detail issues that WERE happening in her then-relationship that she was exploring/revisiting through those experiences and not just because she was trying to find a way to save her then-relationship)
