DRAMA REVIEW | Blossoms in Adversity (2024)

I was in the mood for a historical romance story and Blossoms in Adversity seemed like a good idea since it features some of the actors I like. I was pleasantly surprised by this drama. I really thought it was going to be yet another run of the mill romance but what I found was so much more.

The story it's not about romance per se, that's a side story, the main plot of Blossoms in Adversity it's a family torn apart when their patriarch crosses the Emperor in the wrong way (for the right reasons). As a consequence the men, including the children, are exiled to the north and the women, find themselves without the family's fortune and no men to support them. So, out of necessity, they create a matriarchy and end up finding agency of their own for the first time ever with incredible results as they slowly rethink the "rules" they have been living by so far. Slowly, each women starts to show their true self, their personal interests and strong characteristics, they start business, struggle and succeed, the road it's never easy but their bond it's stronger.

I will be honest, you will have to push through at first. There’s some catty behaviour but it’s important to understand that most of these females characters never thought they would be anything other than brides or mothers, as set for the society, but these women prove to be mature and sensible enough to hold proper conversations with each other and realize why they need to work together.

The male lead's story it's also very interesting and it complements well the main characters but I found the women's story far more compelling. This drama is very uplifting and consistent in its characters's development, never betraying them.

I recommend it!

No one has to agree with me on this, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of He Xuan/Miao-er(He Xuan's finace)/Shi Qingxuan throuple AU.

I don't know that I could ever pull it off, mostly because in a universe where He Xuan didn't lose his family, and Miao-er, He Xuan would be a very different person who we tragically never get to know. I don't know that I could write him as anyone else but the He Xuan we already know.

Hua Cheng’s Design

Hua Cheng’s character design. As we all know, the image of Hua Cheng was established based on the Miao ethnic group, so let's see the specific origin of things on Hua Cheng’s person.

1. Red umbrella:

The red umbrella in Miao culture is one of the indispensable props at marriage and celebrations. The red umbrella symbolizes great auspiciousness as one’s desires, numerous children and grandchildren, sheltering from the wind and rain, exorcising evil spirits, and shielding people from disasters. All of these together are a perfect fit to represent the blessings of the heavens (Tian Guan Ci Fu, the name of the novel) with no taboos or misfortunes.

At the same time, in the opening episode of Tian Guan Ci Fu, Xie Lian mistook Hua Cheng for a bridegroom ghost. The situation fits perfectly like a miracle as a red umbrella is required for a wedding. 

2. Silver butterfly, maple leaves.

The Miao people have long had an ancient song, "Feng Mu Ge" (Song of the Maple Tree), to praise the beauty of life. The Miao people also consider butterflies as the ancestral mother, who can bless the village to be peaceful, the children to thrive, and the nation to flourish.

Maple leaves and butterflies represent rebirth, and reincarnation. These motifs can be seen in the culture of the Miao people everywhere, from clothes to jewelry to household decorations. The most famous is the Hong He area, located in an autonomous district of the Miao ethnic group in Yunnan. Whether it is nature or people, maple leaves and butterflies are popular, cherished symbols.

ps. The butterfly decoration that the author saw while traveling in Yunnan is also an inspiration.

"When I was traveling in Yunnan, there was a butterfly decoration in front of the hotel elevator,” Mo Xiang looked at it and thought. After a while, she said proudly, "He will raise a kaleidoscope of butterflies." (From MXTX Author’s Notes and Interview) 

3. Silver Jewelry

This goes without saying much, silverware is an important component of Miao culture, "the more beautiful, the better;” "Miao people’s iconic silver jewelry is used to pray for peace and as a token of love or a proposal of marriage.” Speaking of which, Hua Cheng’s character design is based on ethnic Miao people. Of course, the same jewelry is used. The inheritor of the art of Miao silversmithing, Shi sifu, also said, Hua Cheng is steeped in Miao Guang symbolism and aesthetics.

4. Other

If you read the novel, it’s not difficult to figure out:

Huacheng used a red umbrella because when he was young and weak and had nothing. Xie Lian gave him a red umbrella to shield him from the wind and rain.

Hua Cheng uses corral beads because this is one of Xie Lien's lost earrings. In Taoism, coral represents the heart. Taking this into account, Xie Lian in the book had two corral earrings. The implication of this symbolism then becomes quite enticing. 

Hua Cheng strung the red string of fated love because, during the Gentle Fragrance part of the book, Xie Lian gently cut a hair strand and gifted it to him. In our country's traditional culture, tying your hair together represents binding marriage. The red line represents your destined intertwined path.

From the beginning to the end, the author demonstrated the changes in Hua Cheng. "Become a better, stronger person because of him, for him". All of Hua Cheng’s character progressions developed according to the plot, gradually revealing layers of meaning, and not built by forced intention. Therefore, in successfully portraying such a character, the author moved the reader’s heart and created a miracle. 

A Love that is unchanged even in the face of death.

I was literally shaking and internally screaming when I saw the news. I remember back in the summer when the Shi Qiang spinoff was announced, some fans were bummed that there's no mention of Wang Miao, and I always thought it'd be about Shi Qiang's cases from years ago. But last month (Dec 2023), they submitted the show info to the National Radio and Television Administration, and the summary 100% tells a story of Shi Qiang and Wang Miao:

Based on the info sheet, this show will have 12 episodes, and filming starts in September 2024 (so it'll probably air in 2025 the earliest). And this is the plot summary: After Project Guzheng, Shi Qiang (with leukemia from the radiation) works again with Wang Miao because some nanomaterial gets stolen. After some investigation, they find that it's not simply about the stolen material. An unknown organization is planning something to prevent the humans to work together. When they are close to the truth, Shi Qiang and Wang Miao have a fallout due to their different principles, but because they trust each other tremendously, the issue is resolved. And they get to save the day again.

I'm curious what made them add Wang Miao to the show? Did Yang Lei get bombed with messages of how much people love Miaomiao and Shiwang? I also wonder if Liu Cixin will have any amount of input to the script, or is it going to be 100% original writing from the scriptwriter. Will Tian Liangliang and her team write the script because she nailed the Shiwang dynamic in Three-Body? Will Miaomiao cry like Dashi feared when he hears about the illness, or will Dashi try to hide it from Miaomiao for as long as possible? Anyways, I'm just so so so so so excited for this. What a good start of 2024!!!

Shang Bu Huan: Had a license once, but it expired and he never got around to renewing it because he's been perpetually on the run from the government. Drives a beat-up rustbucket that has seen better days and lives in the back. Excellent driver--calm, steady, able to navigate hairpin turns without breaking a sweat--but prone to getting lost and ending up in unexpected places.

Lin Xue Ya: No license under his own name; 'Gui Niao' has one with a fake birthday that he forged himself. Spends most of his time bumming rides off other people in spite of being an excellent driver and how much he enjoys taking people for a ride.

Lang Wu Yao: No license but he can drive if Ling Ya is riding shotgun; gets nervous in heavy traffic and is prone to road rage whenever someone cuts him off.

Shou Yun Xiao: Has a license, can drive better with one eye than most drivers can manage with two.

Juan Can Yun: Learner's permit. Shou Yun Xiao is his unofficial driving instructor. Wants to get his license because he thinks it will make him more appealing to girls.

Dan Fei: Cannot drive, never learned (too busy studying the blade). Juan Can Yun ends up teaching her in exchange for swordfighting lessons.

Xing Hai: Does not see the point of human conveyances OR traffic conventions.

Sha Wu Sheng: Tried to apply for a license but the clerks ran away screaming when he showed up at the office, so he tossed some money on the counter, and called it good. A skilled driver who can pull off all kinds of incredible stunts; Lin Xue Ya originally hired him to be his personal chauffeur back in the day.

Mie Tian Hai: Technically has a license, but it just says, "I do what I want". Leader of the Onyx Demon motorcycle gang. Looks good in black leather and wears a helmet. Capable of crazy stunts, but gets shown up by Lin Xue Ya (who he didn't even know could drive) and never recovers from the embarrassment.

Xie Ying Luo: Has a license. Good driver, but prone to breakdowns.

Lou Zhen Jie: Legally licensed driver on a road trip of self-discovery that somehow turns into Bonnie and Clyde. Stops to help Xie Ying Luo when she's stranded on multiple occasions.

Xiao Kuang Juan: The asshole at the DMV responsible for passing or failing applicants.

Wan Jun Po: Has a license, very dedicated to keeping his registration, insurance, and other paperwork accurate and up to date. Excellent driver, gets nervous when Piao Miao is driving, though.

Azibelpher: Rich guy who doesn't drive much, but he got a license under a false name for the lulz. When he drives, he enjoys deliberately pissing people off (especially his son).
