Insomnia.
Reader has trouble sleeping.
Abby Anderson x Reader
Word count: 1058
Warnings: Sfw. Established relationship. A very slight and tiny hint toward sex. Not proofread. Pet names used instead of y/n. Babe, bun, love. Reader referred to as girl.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Your eyes watched the night sky. A faint breeze came through your open window. Every so often Abby would cuddle closer to the pillow she was holding when a cold gust of wind would fly through the room. You smiled to yourself seeing as the pillow was practically being crushed by Abby's strong arms. You were once in the pillow's place. After laying in bed for what seemed like hours you quickly replaced yourself with the pillow in hopes of not waking Abby. Usually, she would wake up when you removed yourself from her embrace but today she was extremely tired so you got lucky in not interrupting her slumber.
Now, you were sitting below the window ledge, you were positioned on your knees which were currently cushioned by your favorite pillow, blocking you from the hard floor. Your back was stretched as far as it could go and your forearms were against the ledge while your cheek was smashed into the back of your hands. You loved looking at the stars. It was always so peaceful at night. You looked at the clouds. You could only tell that they were there if you focused your eyes on them. As your eyes danced from star to star you began to hear the sound of your puffy comforter moving around. Your quickly turned toward your girlfriend.
The tired blonde had a confused expression on her face as she began to realize you weren't laying next to her. She searched around the bed, her sleepy state making her mind take a few seconds longer to fully register that you weren't in bed. "Babe?" Her raspy voice asks although it could have easily been mistaken for a random groan. "I'm right here." You call out. She looks up to you and her shoulders instantly relax seeing as you're okay and still in the room with her. "What are you still doing up, bun?" Abby asks. "I can't sleep." You respond simply and look back up at the moon. "Looking at the sky again?" She asks. "Mhm," You hum with a slight nod. "The stars seem brighter tonight for some reason."
Abby lays back down and stares at the ceiling. You both know that she won't be able to fall back asleep unless she is able to feel you. The silence that filled the room was interrupted by a sigh from Abby. "Do you want to come up here or am I gonna have to go down there with you?" Abby asked as she propped herself up on her forearms. She knew all too well about your insomnia and she was sure you had tried to fall asleep many times before you decided to get up and sit on the floor. "I dunno." You responded. You looked at the clock. 4:38 am. "I can't sleep. I've tried everything." You mumbled referring to a book Abby had gifted you not too long ago. While she was out she found a book full of methods to help insomniacs sleep. However, none seemed to help your case.
"I'm sorry, bun," Abby said. You moved from your perched position and laid down on the bed next to Abby. "Can we stay awake together?" You ask as you look into her eyes. "Yeah, we can. I'll stay awake while you're still up." Abby yawned. "What do ya' wanna talk about?" Abby asks knowing that conversation always manages to get a yawn out of you. "I dunno." You say making Abby chuckle slightly. "Well, what's on your mind?" Your girlfriend asks you. You take a second to respond, trying to think of an answer. "I was just looking at the stars. My thoughts were kind of, I don't know, frozen? I guess. Like I wasn't really thinking? I don't know how to explain it..." You sigh. "... Do you think it's too late for me to go to bed? Should I just wait for the morning?" You ask.
Abby turned her head to look at the clock even though no matter what time was shown Abby would have given you the same answer. "You need your rest, love. You know how you get when you're low on sleep." You sighed knowing Abby was right. You scoot closer to Abby, resting your head on her chest. Your arm wrapped around her torso and you threw your leg over hers. Her strong arm wrapped around your body securing your position. She placed a soft kiss on your forehead. The two of you lay there with each other. Neither of you said anything. A few minutes passed by and you were almost sure she had fallen asleep but to your surprise, she spoke up.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" The blonde asks. You shook your head 'no.' Her hand trailed down to the waistband of your shorts. Her fingertips toyed with the elastic. You giggled at her silent suggestions. "No." You grinned. "No?" Abby asked. With the tone of her voice, you could tell she was smiling. "I think that's a first." She joked and removes her fingers that were tucked under your waistband and moved them to your waist.
"Shut up." You yawn and push your head further into Abby's chest. With her free hand, she moved a strand of hair that was covering your face. "That's my girl." She praised as you yawned into her chest. You blush at the girl's words. She kissed your forehead again and began rubbing your back. You close your eyes and focus all of your attention on Abby. The way her hand was slowly but surely hiking up your thin t-shirt with the way her hand was going up and down your back. Her chest rose and fell with every breath she took. Your breathing was in sync with hers. You focused your hearing on the sound of her breath and her soothing heartbeat which was right below your ear.
Soon enough you let sleep take over you. Abby wasn't sure when exactly it happened but it was now 5:12 am. She fought sleep for as long as she could. Every time she felt her eyes closing she lifted her eyebrows in an attempt to lift her heavy eyelids. She kissed your forehead once more then finally let herself fall asleep with the morning sunrise peeking through the window.

Would you be open to writing Abby Anderson x veterinarian reader (Like it takes Place in the cannon apocalyptic world and the reader is the veterinarian at the WLF)
puppy love (lil blurb!)
abby anderson x fem! reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
cw: just some anxiety and panic from abby, needles, a tiny bit of blood (normal for injections) and fluff. mutual pining!🤍
aw this idea is so cute!
like imagine baby alice catching a stomach bug and getting really sick (poor thing :( ), and abby quickly takes her in between her strong arms and runs towards your clinic in the WLF, panting and with a panic attack by the time she gets there, scared that she was gonna die since she was so little.
and as you work and take the puppy in, you are reassuring her that everything will be okay, and that she’s just dehydrated due to all the vomiting.
and even though it breaks her heart, she watches. watches as you cut and buzz the hair on her little tiny paw and find a vein to stick a needle so big she fears for the puppy, her blue eyes watering at the sight of blood sticking to your fingers.
and once everything is done and alice is peacefully sleeping with a drip on her paw, you shush abby.
“is she gonna be okay? please tell me she’s gonna be okay. i’ve only had her for a week! she can’t die. she can’t…”
you hush her, your warm palms taking her shoulders and caressing up and down her muscled arms to calm the panicked girl in from of you.
“hey… everything’s gonna be okay. it’s just a stomach bug. she’s a strong pup. she’s gonna make it.” you promise with a sweet reassuring smile. and abby might be falling fast just for that. cause you’re soft, and sweet, and smart, and you don’t mind spending the whole night up with her in the clinic to keep an eye on the puppy, assuring her that she’s just fine.
and by the time alice is back to jumping and barking and licking all over abby’s face she was completely smitten with you.
“see, i told you everything would be alright.” you smiled at her, petting alice, who basically jumped to your arms from abby’s to lick at your cheek. “oh! you’re welcome alice, you’re welcome…” you laughed, scratching behind her ears. “i think she likes me.” you said to abby, happy.
“she’s not the only one.” abby muttered back and when you stared at her, her blue eyes were on yours. your whole face flushed at her words.
“well… i like you too.” you talked to alice, by a moment your eyes meeting hers once again at the end of the sentence.
let’s say… you met abby a couple more times after that. and that you found out that you really liked her.
you two end up dating, become the cutest couple of the whole WLF and alice ended up with two mommies <3.

Harvest Moon Ch. 3
Farmhand Abby Anderson x Femme Reader
See ch.1, ch.2
Inspired by:
──────────୨ৎ─────────
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
──────────୨ৎ─────────
Description: Fluff, angst, friends to lovers, time skip. Abby Anderson farmhand AU. Modern AU.
Plot: You and Abby had been best friends since childhood. You basically grew up together in a small town in eastern Washington. However, a vicious fight separates the two of you. Only the most unpredictable circumstance can bring you back together. This is the third installation.
Author’s Note: I just finished my finals and now it’s spring break! I have more time to write now. 😊
──────────୨ৎ─────────
After Dan reluctantly consumed the vegetables and baked salmon you had cooked for him, he retired to his bedroom. He was completely knocked out before his head even hit the pillow, snoring like a bear.
You washed the dishes from dinner (and previously neglected dishes…) in the sink downstairs. You hum a song as you work. Singing parts of the lyrics that you remember.
“I wanna see you dance agai-“ You stop yourself.
You are instantly back in the hot gym of Dry Creek High School. You giggle about how old the song is, dancing awkwardly to the rhythm.
“Who still listens to Neil young?” Says a voice.
Abby’s voice.
You blink and the moment is gone. Now your eyes fixate on the tap water running over the dishes in your hands. You turn the water off and dry your hands on your jeans. The thought of that night doesn’t leave you no matter how hard you try to think of something else.
You step into your childhood bedroom and register the untouched belongings. The ones that used to belong to you. Or, a version of you. Your simple attic bedroom had accumulated dust. You watch dust particles flow through small beams of moonlight that slip through your window. The old lace curtains frame the full moon. Your dark oak bed frame creaks like it always used to as you climb onto the mattress. You pull the layers of quilts over your shoulders and try to get comfortable.
You feel like a little girl all over again. Coming back to this room feels like stepping into it for the very first time. When you were young and scared. Living with your uncle, a man you barely knew after your parents had passed. The thoughts of how much things have changed infest your mind. Every event that occurred in your childhood plays on the inside of your eyelids like a never ending movie.
That night you end up tossing and turning until early morning birds chirp loudly outside of your window.
──────────୨ৎ─────────
Clouds roll over the farm, giving the land that signature grey filter that appears in the awkward stages between the end of Winter and the bloom of Spring. It dulls the vibrant greens of the trees and blues of the sky. The fog covers any sight of the regal mountains. Like a secret kept hidden to those who are patient enough to stay for the beauty of Summer.
The cold stings your face as you walk around the farm. Not much has changed. You notice a few new fences, a stump where a tree had once stood, and more peeled paint on the exterior walls of the stable.
The inside of the stable is warm. Horses grunt at you as you walk by, analyzing them. You recognize some of them, except they were only foals when you last saw them. Before guilt can creep into your heart again, a bark interrupts your thoughts.
“Shep!” You crouch down as the panting golden retriever runs into your arms.
“Hi buddy!” You say running your hands through his fur. When you were little you begged Dan for a puppy. You convinced him that the dog you get could help him on the farm by herding the animals back into their pens. Then came along Shep on Christmas morning. A tiny puppy Dan had brought in after you finished opening the rest of your presents. You quickly realized this dog could barely find his own tail, let alone herd sheep. So instead, he became your loyal sidekick in every adventure you dragged him into as a child.
“I missed you!” You say scratching behind his ears. Shep pants happily as he sits for you, wagging his tail.
His ears suddenly perk up and his head twists towards the entrance of the stable. He quickly leaves your embrace and jogs over to a tall figure leaning against the stable entrance.
First you notice the boots. Then the hat. Then the braid. You stand up and walk towards the figure to make sure you aren’t seeing things.
There stood Abby. Except, it wasn’t the Abby that you knew. Her stance was confident, a stark comparison to the socially inept teenager you had to beg to come with you to school events. Her scrawny limbs were replaced with lean muscle. Her hair was longer, more parts were bleached from being out in the sun too long. And her face, her face had changed too. New freckles that you didn’t recognize litter her cheeks. The soft baby face you once knew was replaced by a hardened expression. One you could no longer read. You gain a small ounce of comfort from the realization that her eyes had stayed the same.
She stands at the entrance of the stable with her arms crossed until Shep approaches her. She crouches down and gives him ear scratches.
“Look Shep, it’s the traitor.” She says in a baby voice. Your nose crinkles. So this is how its gonna go…
“What are you doing here? How did you know I was coming back into town?” You ask. Abby looks around for a stick to throw for Shep, still avoiding your gaze.
“I didn’t.” Abby says picking up a small stick. Her voice was slightly deeper. Your heart pangs as you remember when it used to crack whenever she got nervous. Her country accent somehow got thicker too. Who was this girl?
“Then why are you here?” Your eyebrow quirks.
“I work here.” Abby says nonchalantly as she waves the stick in front of Shep and then throws it a few yards away.
“What? When did you start working here?”
“Couple days ago. Dan officially hired me after his visit with Doc. But I’ve been helping him out here and there for about… hm.. when was it that you left again?” Abby says finally meeting your gaze, arms crossed.
Anger surges through you. How could Dan not tell you about this?
“Oh thats right! Six years. Six years ago when you left everybody to go to your fancy-pants school. I forgot.” Abby says. The words dig into your skin, skin that she knew how to get under all too well.
“Well Im here now alright? And Dan doesn’t need you here because he’s got me. So you can go home and let me take care of it.” You say placing a hand on your hip. Shep comes back with his stick and happily gives it to Abby who throws it again. He is blissfully unaware of the heated conversation as he chases after it.
Abby scoffs. “This farm wouldn’t survive without me. I don’t even know why you came back. Dans got me to take care of him and the crops. This place doesn’t need you.” Abby says harshly. Your brow furrows and your fist clenches.
“That’s funny. I remember you saying the exact opposite before you left me out in the woods to walk home six years ago.” You say, your cheeks burning from the confrontation.
Abby’s eyes narrow. “I don’t think we wanna talk about mistakes that were made six years ago.”
“Well maybe we do, because you seem to care. A lot.” You point out.
Shep comes back with the stick but this time Abby takes it from him and throws it angrily, as far as she can. Her tone turns defensive.
“I don’t care! I could give a horses ass about what happened that night!” She says throwing her hands up into the air.
You meet her energy. “Well good! Because I certainly don’t care about it either!” You shout.
“Im glad.” Abby taunts you.
“Im glad you’re glad!” You yell.
“Well Im glad you’re glad Im glad!” She yells back, realizing the stupidity of her words. It seems like you still knew how to get under her skin too.
Abby pivots away from you in frustration and angrily stomps in the opposite direction of the stable. Shep follows her with his stick.
“Not now Shep!” She yells. Shep whimpers and looks over at you with puppy dog eyes. He then reluctantly turns to follow Abby with droopy ears.
Your heart beats fast. You can barely believe what just happened. You had no idea there would be such an explosion on your second day back in town. You feel like throwing up.
Your queasiness is quickly replaced by anger. Anger towards a certain someone. Not Abby…
Dan.

Silly Abby Candy’s for Kids
Tumblr media
Abby tries sneaking candy before Halloween and reader is not having it
Hellooo I’m in the mood to write some halloween themed stuff the rest of this month so stay tuned for a couple more stories!! Anyway just quickly wrote this which means there are deff mistakes on there. I’ll do my best to edit as I catch them but sorry in advance. Hope you enjoy!!
Warnings: Mainly fluff, tini tiny bit suggestive
Part 1: Donation Boot
Part 2: Damn the Chief
You grabbed yours and Abby’s dinner plates off of the dining room table and headed into the kitchen to deposit them in the sink.
Abby followed suit rolling up the place mats and grabbing both wine glasses, now empty.
There was a warm ember in your stomach from the alcohol just waiting to strike into a roaring fire.
At the sink you quickly rinsed the lingering bits of food off of the plates and slotted them into the dishwasher.
Before you could walk away from the sink however you hips were pined to the counter as Abby moved into the space behind you.
You giggled at her closeness, constantly feeling like a bumbling teenage version of yourself around her.
Your wife however acted if nothing was out of the ordinary. She went about her business swirling a bit of water in the bottom of the glass to rid them of the dried red line and placing them ever so gently onto the top was rack of the appliance.
Chills broke out across your neck as you felt her warm breath fan across your shoulder with each movement. This was seriously not helping the alcohol buzz.
You needed to clear your head before you both got distracted and wasted the rest of the night away. The idea of it was too enticing. Dangerous.
You bumped your bum back towards her hips, “Give me some space Anderson,”
She chuckled and placed a quick peck to your cheek, “Never Anderson,” though she complied and backed up and leaned against the opposite counter.
Next to her sat a big black bowl, or not really a bowl you guess, more of a cauldron. In it was mini individually wrapped candy bars.
Halloween was only a few days away and you had to get some treats before the grocery store shelves were bare. You’d hate to disappoint the neighborhood kids the night of.
Abby however thought it was dumb to buy all that candy. For some reason she was convinced you guys would only get two trick of treaters this year and then be stuck with three months worth of candy.
It wasn’t true of course, you were usually out of candy by 10 pm on Halloween night but Abby was more or less… a halloween Scrooge; at least when it came to kids taking the candy she was hoping to eat.
She complained about the candy but secretly she hoped no one would knock on that door come the 31st so she could hoard it all to herself like a dragon with gold.
She was already reaching into the cauldron as you dried your hands, trying to sneak a piece.
Not on your watch. You whipped the towel in her direction hitting the side of her thigh.
The movement made her jump in surprise. She looked over at you, the picture of innocence.
“What the hell was that for?”
You raised your eyebrows at her, “That candy is for the kids this weekend.”
“Oh come on one piece won’t hurt.” She tried to use her best begging eyes.
It was not going to work, at least not when it came to the candy but the wine was getting to your head now and other ideas came to mind.
You walked past her only slowing to grab her belt loop and drag her behind you.
“Where are we going?” She asked as the pair of you trailed over to the staircase.
You stopped at the base and turned to look up at her, “You can’t have the candy as dessert,” you paused for dramatic effect and whipped your baggy t shirt over your head. What can you say you have a flare for the dramatics, “but I have a better one for you, if you want it of course?”
Abby’s mouth hung open in surprise before she finally gathered herself, “Hell yes.”
You spun around to run up the stairs, giggling as Abby chased behind you.

Hello, I've absolutely fallen in love with your writing for The Last of Us and so I submit my humble request. If possible a piece where reader and Abby navigate intimacy when the reader is on the Ace spectrum (will engage in everything except receiving when they get down and dirty XD). Thank you so much for all your good work!

You weren't sure how to bring it up with her, if you were being honest. It was early on in the relationship, so maybe it was too soon to tell her. Or maybe it was becoming too late, it was a question you'd been bouncing around for a long time, but you weren't quite ready to catch.
Overthinking was a habit, you knew that but this time was different. Because what if she'd thought you were weird? What if she didn't want to be with you? You liked her, a lot.
More than you'd ever liked anyone, and that scared the hell out of you.
"Hey." You jumped, turning around from where you sat at the bar. "Hey Abbs." You smiled, her hand resting on your back as she moved around to stand beside you. "How was patrol?" "Good, boring and Manny drove me fucking crazy." You laughed, taking a sip of your drink while watching her sit down.
"What about you?" "Mm, Jordan was his usual annoying self but Leah helps with that. M'glad you had a good day." Her hand moved to rest on yours, seeing you hand her your glass. "Have the rest, I wanted to try something new." You shook your head and made a face, Abby laughing. "We can't hang in my room tonight, Manny's all over that damn place."
You made yet another face making Abby laugh into the drink, trying not to spill it as she set the glass down.
"Thank God I don't have roomates." You murmured, Abby handing the glass back to the bartender. "Mm, just wait till I move in." She winked, smiling as you giggled while standing up from your seat. "You wish, I'm gonna let you be stuck with Manny for as long as I can." "Dick." You laughed, walking away while she followed.
"Y'know I missed you today." You said softly, turning around to smile at her. "It was so boring with those two lovebirds, I missed my own." Abby grinned, grabbing your hand as you walked up the stairs. "I missed you too, hard being around Manny talking about all his 'conquests' when all I want to think about is you."
You felt your face go hot, even if you couldn't see it.
Keeping your eyes forward thought you continued up to your room and opening up the door.
"So I've been thinking..." You started off, not sure how to start the conversation in general as you turned to meet her clouded eyes. A shy smile lingering on your face, "yeah?" "Well, since we're getting closer... and getting... serious." "Mhm." You took a breath, backing up towards your bed while she followed, staring you down like prey.
"What if we... took things... somewhere else?" "Like where?" She asked in a teasing tone, lightly laughing when you shrugged. "Anywhere you want. But I–" You didn't get much time to speak, Abby leaning down and kissing you, hand cradling your jaw as you felt the backs of your knees hit the edge of the bed.
Her hands moving down to the buttons of your jeans.
"Abby.." "What's wrong?" You shook your head, taking her hands into yours instead. "Nothing, it's all great but... I wanted to talk to you about something before we go further." She stared at you, your heart feeling like it was going to beat out of your chest and fall onto the floor in front of you.
"You okay?" It felt like forever had gone by when she said those two words. But in reality, it was only a few seconds. You nodded profusely.
"Yeah it's just.." You paused, staring into her worried eyes. "..I don't like when people do things to me.. during sex?" It came out like question, watching her face as you formed the words. "I know it's weird–" "It's not." Glancing down, you played with your hands, avoiding her gaze. "You like giving, but not receiving. Works for me." You snorted, shoving her shoulder playfully as she laughed.
"That's one way to put it. I like kissing and all of that just not.. receiving." You laughed awkwardly while using her words, seeing her smile grow, watching your shoulders relax and eyes begin to wander back to her own.
"You don't think it's weird?" She shook her head with a light laugh whilst you continued on. "I just... thinks it's gross freaks me out, but at the same time it just... doesn't get me going like at all."
"But that doesn't mean I don't like doing other things.." You said slowly, hand wrapping around her wrist slowly turning her so her back faced the bed. "Oh really?" "Mhm." "What if I make you uncomfortable?" You smiled, tilting your head. "I'll tell you. Don't worry."
"One step at a time?" She nodded at that. You leaned up to kiss her, her hands moving around your waist. "We'll go slow." Abby muttered against your lips. "Wouldn't have it any other way."

A Heart’s a Heavy Burden
Abby Anderson x GN! Reader
Tumblr media
After arriving on Catalina Island, Abby is afraid to let her guard down. She lives with this constant crushing weight on her chest that she fears will never leave her. It’s not until she meets the reader that things begin to change.
Warnings: Copious amounts of fluff, swearing, basically just a lot of cute shit lol
Anon requested one where the reader goes on a hike with Abby and Lev, I hope you guys enjoy (especially if you requested it) <3 it’s been really nice getting back into writing and this request was so adorable aaaa.
A/N: I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted and for that I apologize. In the meantime, I hope this will suffice. Also peep the Howl’s Moving Castle quote I used for the title lol
After the death of her father and that night in the theatre, Abby has come to the realization that pain and suffering is nothing if not inevitable. There has never been a point in time in which an instance of joy or peace is not soon followed by the truest forms of human depravity. When Abby and Lev arrived in Santa Barbara she thought things would be different. She was filled with this brand new feeling of optimism that she thought was long forgotten, and for the first time in forever she had hope.
Then—almost as if some higher being was mocking her for finally letting her guard down—the Rattlers happened, and it all came crashing down. As easily as a sandcastle is destroyed by the tide, that newfound happiness was gone in an instant and that feeling of despair returned once again. She had almost become accustomed to the suffering and heartache that accompanied those short increments of happiness.
So when Abby and Lev arrived on Catalina Island, naturally Abby was incredibly grateful, but she was also fucking terrified. The moment that she stepped onto the shore, Abby vowed to never let her guard down again. She never wanted to see Lev hurt again, especially after everything he’d already been through.
It’s easy to imagine how difficult life can be when every happy moment is squandered by the fear of something inevitably terrible happening. It’s been months on Catalina Island and that normalcy Abby has missed so much was beginning to return, yet she is still afraid. A large part of Abby knows that being captured by the Rattlers isn’t her fault, but nevertheless she still feels this tremendous weight on her chest. Bearing down on her, compressing her into something small.
There is something different about Catalina Island though. Something that makes Abby feel as though—despite everything that has already happened—things will be different here. It’s you.
You were one of the first faces Abby saw when her and Lev arrived on the shore. She had sustained multiple injuries and was suffering from severe starvation and dehydration, Lev the same. You however were in the infirmary for a fractured ankle, and due to the shortage of space she was placed in the bed next to yours.
There was something you noticed about Abby the moment she sat down next to you. You couldn’t quite place it at the time but thinking back, it was definitely her eyes. There was so much pain behind them. You didn’t know why or how you knew, but it was there. Maybe it was because you had seen that same pain in the mirror that sits idle in the darkness of your room, the one covered by a tattered white sheet. It didn’t matter though, because all you knew was that the pain was there, and you wanted nothing more than to show her that life can be okay.
You woke up early today, laying in bed and trying to shake the sleep from your body, you counted the dust particles that floated in the small beam of sunlight that peeked through your window. While you lay basking in the warmth and stillness of your bedroom, you heard a quiet knock on your door. A small voice followed, it was Lev.
“Y/N? Are you awake?”
“Yeah, just give me a sec.” You carefully rolled out of bed before slipping on a hoodie and answering the door.
When you opened the door Lev had a huge smile on his face. “Hi Y/N!”
That was something you really admired about him. Even after everything him and Abby had been through, he was just full of this giddy optimism that continued to wonder you every day.
“Hey Lev, what’s up?”
“I was wondering if you wanted to come on a hike with Abby and I? Apparently there’s something she wants to show you.”
“Of course, I’d love to! Just let me get ready and I’ll head down in a bit.” Just as the words slipped out Lev embraced you tightly. You giggled as he leapt into your arms.
“Awesome! I’ll go let Abby know.” Lev released you from his grip before hurriedly running downstairs.
When you found the two waiting outside your room, you couldn’t help but grin at the sight of Abby and her adorable freckles. She looked so much happier now, having grown her hair out a bit and built up some of the muscle mass she had lost.
“You ready to go?” Abby had her hands hooked in the straps of her backpack as she took a small step closer to you.
“You bet your ass I am.”
As Abby led you and Lev along the shoreline you noticed how her skin was almost glowing. You figured it was most likely a product of all the time she spent helping out in the California sun.
Rather than resting like any normal person would’ve, as soon as Abby was back on her feet, she was desperate to help out as much as she could. Whether it was patrolling the beaches or running the farms, she didn’t care. She just wanted to help.
It seemed like it was a way for her to somehow compensate for being rescued off of the coast, and you wished you could tell her that she didn’t owe anyone anything—that after everything she went through to get here, there was nothing to repay. Of course though, it’s difficult to console someone when they haven’t exactly told you what was troubling them.
The shoreline bordered between an abundance of rocky cliffs and the tide, and the area was littered with lush greenery. Lev walked ahead of the two of you, jumping from rock to rock with surprising ease.
“Be careful Lev! There are sharks in that water you know.” Abby yelled at Lev to no avail. It was sweet how protective she was over him, even though she knew he wouldn’t fall.
You lightly nudged Abby’s shoulder with yours, the warmth of her skin against yours was comforting. You gave her a small reassuring smile. “He’ll be fine Abs, you know he can handle himself.”
Abby sighed, looking down for a brief moment before continuing. “You’re right… I just worry you know.”
“Yeah, I get it. You know, you’re actually pretty cute when you get all protective.” You said it teasingly, but you’d be lying if there wasn’t a small ounce of truth to the words.
Abby smiled, blushing at the comment, but it was difficult to tell in the sunlight. She was grateful the sun had already made her cheeks a light shade of pink. “Shut up.”
It was nice with Abby and Lev. You spent the day burying Abby in the sand on the beach and chasing the crabs that hid under the rocks with Lev. Abby had packed a whole bunch of food in her bag, and the three of you quickly devoured it all.
While Lev was building a shark out of sand, you and Abby laid side by side as you basked in the warm sun. After a bit you felt a shift next to you as Abby rolled on her side, leaning on her arm while she looked down towards you.
“Hey.” Her voice was quiet, soft, similar to Lev’s when he woke you up this morning.
You opened your eyes and nearly melted at the sight before you. Abby was completely shielding the sun from your face which created a halo effect that outlined her entire head. The small strands of hair that stuck out of her ponytail glowed like threads of gold, and you could see clearly now the freckles that danced across her face all the way down to her arms.
You replied with a soft smile on your face as you laid there admiring all the little details of her face. “Hey.”
“Can I show you something?”
You gave her a small nod. “Do you want me to get Lev?” As you began sitting up Abby put her hand on your arm to stop you.
“Actually, I was kind of hoping it could just be us. Is that okay?” There was a small hint of nervousness in her voice and you weren’t sure if it was due to the thought of leaving Lev alone, or if it was from something else.
“I would love that.” The corner of Abby’s mouth curled into a small smile at your answer.
The both of you stood up from the sand, brushing the excess off of your pants. Abby jogged over to Lev and whispered something quietly before quickly returning to you.
When you and Abby began walking away from the beach you heard Lev’s voice in the distance. “Have Y/N back by ten o’clock young man, I have a hunting rifle and I know how to use it!”
Abby rolled her eyes as she yelled back in response. “Yeah, yeah.”
You looked at Abby with a confused face. “He has a hunting rifle?”
“Nah, I think he got it from a movie. I need to stop showing him those old rom-coms.” Abby chuckled as she responded and you couldn’t help but let out a small laugh as well. It’s almost annoying how infectious her laughter was.
Eventually, the two of you reached a long stream of rushing water. It wasn’t too deep, but if you were to fall in, the current was definitely strong enough to swiftly sweep you away.
There was a tiny path of rocks that travelled in a crooked line across the stream, and it was obvious it hadn’t been used in a long time. “Please tell me we aren’t going this way.”
“Come on Y/N, I got you. You trust me right?” Abby didn’t wait for a response as she grabbed your hand and led you across the mossy rocks.
As you reached the last rock, you let out a breath of relief. All you had to do was prop yourself over the log in front of you and you were home free. Carefully, as you reached your arms up to grip onto the ridges of the bark with your fingertips, you somehow lost your footing and slipped. You yelped and nearly fell face first into the jagged rocks below you, but luckily before you could, you felt a strong arm grab your waist. Abby almost on instinct quickly hoisted you up and onto the log just before you fell to your death.
While you laid your body down on the dirty log in an attempt to calm the adrenaline that was coursing through your veins. Abby nonchalantly stood up next to you with a huge grin, acting as if you didn't just see your life flash before your eyes two seconds ago. “See? I got you. Now let’s go.”
You groaned. “Can I get a second? I nearly just died back there.”
“Don’t be so dramatic Y/N, you know I’d never let anything happen to you.” Abby grabbed your hand and dragged you over the log. “Come on, we’re almost there.”
She wasn’t wrong about it not being far (and for that you were extremely grateful). It only took a couple more minutes until you finally reached your destination, and the moment you saw it, you were speechless.
Before you was a small clearing that had a view of the entire island. There were two large trees with ripe oranges hanging from it’s branches, and an abundance of wildflowers that danced in the wind like small fairies. The sunlight that shone through the leaves on the trees reminded you of the small beam of light that you were admiring this morning, except this was a thousand times more beautiful.
“Holy shit Abs.” It was one of the most beautiful things you had ever seen, and to get to see it with Abby was seriously a dream come true.
“You know, if you don’t like it we can always head back.” Abby teased.
“Oh shut up.” You plopped down onto the soft grass beneath you, breathing in the warm air and letting the blades encompass your body. You noticed Abby was still standing and quickly patted the grass beside you “Lay down with me, you gotta experience it from here.”
Abby lowered herself tentatively beside you, and although she tried to hide it, you could tell out of the corner of your eye that her gaze was fixed on you.
Things between you and Abby have always been pretty platonic; sure you guys flirted every once in a while but it never extended beyond that. And as much as you’d like for the two of you to be more, you never wanted to overstep your bounds. You didn’t want to burden Abby with your feelings especially if she didn’t share them, and you definitely didn’t want to ruin your friendship. It was hard sometimes trying to ignore the longing in your heart—trying to ignore the urge to jump into her arms and kiss her whenever she gave you that adorable freckled smile, but you knew it was for the best.
However, with her gaze fixed upon you, and your fingers just inches away, something in you couldn’t help but move your pinkie just slightly in search of hers. It was a small touch. So small it could almost be accidental, but something in both of you knew it wasn’t.
You heard Abby’s breath hitch quietly and nearly pulled your hand back, but then you felt hers move towards yours. Slowly, Abby’s fingertips traced lines against your hand before lacing them together with yours. The gesture was so sweet you nearly melted.
When you turned your head to face her, her cheeks were flushed and her eyes squinted closed like she was waiting for a bomb to go off. It was in that moment that you realized she felt the same longing that you did—that she knew of the ache that occupied your heart, and everything just clicked.
You tightened your grip on her hand as you brought her fist to your lips, planting a soft kiss on her knuckles. The act softened her expression and she opened her eyes to look at you with that damned smile on her face.
Abby propped herself up the same way she had at the beach, looking down at you with those beautiful blue eyes. The wind blew loose strands of hair across her face, and you reached up to brush them behind her ear. But instead of retracting your hand, you rested your palm lightly against her cheek, tracing small circles with your thumb.
Leaning closer, Abby finally broke the silence. “Hey Y/N?”
Your voice was quiet and raspy as you responded with a small. “Yeah?”
She was closer now, her nose against yours and her warm breath fanning across your face. “Can I kiss you?”
You didn’t respond. Instead you closed the small gap with your lips, kissing Abby tenderly. It was the kind of kiss you couldn’t ever explain to anyone, like a dream you couldn’t quite recall but knew was good. It was perfect.
You could feel her smiling against your mouth as she ran her fingers through your hair and down to your chin.
When Abby pulled away she had this stupid grin on her face, and it was easily the cutest thing you had ever seen.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that for.” Abby laid back down next to you as she let out a sigh of relief.
As you rolled over to rest your head on her chest, Abby’s arm moved to hold you closer. “You’re kidding, right?” She looked at you, urging you to continue. “Abby, I’ve been waiting to do that ever since you gave me that seashell in the infirmary.”
Your heart swelled as you recalled how nervous she was—how she didn’t say a word to you the entire time there, until that day when she shakily introduced herself. It was one of the sweetest gestures anyone had ever done for you, and you’ve adored her ever since.
Abby blushed when you brought up the seashell. She remembers that day clearly; you were leaving the infirmary because your ankle had finally healed, and she saw her opportunity to meet you begin to narrow. Abby initially wasn’t going to go up to you because she was way too afraid, but Lev had seen the way Abby looked at you and forced her to go over and introduce herself.
He is pretty much the entire reason you and Abby were here in the first place, having given Abby that small purple seashell so she could give it to you.
As you lay there listening to the sound of Abby’s heartbeat you heard a rustle in the bushes nearby and nearly jumped out of your skin. Abby quickly stood up, the both of you backing away from the noise. Reaching for the closest thing to you, you grabbed a stick and pointed it towards the source of the rustling. “Who’s there?”
Relief flooded through you as Lev jumped out with his hands up, screaming sarcastically. “Oh no! Please don’t murder me with that tiny stick.”
While Lev giggled hysterically, both you and Abby groaned.
“So did you guys finally kiss or did all my work go to waste?”
Abby rolled her eyes as she reached out to nudge Lev. “You’re such a goober.”
Lev looked at the two of you suspiciously as he crossed his arms. “You didn’t answer my question.”
Abby gave him an amused face as she reached for you without warning, picking you up bridal style. And you couldn’t help but giggle as she leaned in and planted a short kiss on your lips. Abby then pulled away and placed you back on your feet, looking at Lev as she spoke “Did that answer your question?”
Lev excitedly embraced the both of you with a gigantic smile of his face. “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this.”
You and Abby looked at each other happily as you answered in unison. “Trust me, we know.”
The three of you spent the rest of the evening in that small clearing. Abby held Lev on her shoulders as he picked ripe oranges from the trees, and when the sun began to set you lay in Abby’s arms as you watched the cascading pinks and oranges in the clouds paint the sky.
While you lay in Abby’s arms she looked at you with a sense of contentment that she hadn’t felt in a long time. Time had healed the wounds that decorated Abby’s arms, and though the emotional baggage still weighed heavy on her heart, life was brighter here with the Fireflies—with Y/N.
She knew in that moment that it didn’t matter if things came crashing down as it almost always did. The pain and suffering of life was worth enduring because Abby no longer feared the inevitable. She had found something to fight for here and as long as she had you and she had Lev, Abby would continue to fight regardless of the obstacles that stood in her way.
