been feeling a bit nostalgic tonight. I miss the people i used to know online but time spread us far apart and all over the place. wherever they are i hope they're doing well
woke up and someone spilled vanilla extract all over my dash, so as punishment you strange little beasties are getting all the VANILLA FACTS i know:
vanilla is the 2nd most expensive spice in the world (2nd to saffron)
which is why more than 99% of what we call "vanilla extract" is actually vanillin (vanilla's dominant flavor compound) and is not extracted from real vanilla.
luckily, even professionals struggle to tell the difference when it comes to things like baked goods. but there is a distinct difference in non-heat treated products like vanilla ice cream. real vanilla has a more complex, individualized flavor profile.
why is vanilla so expensive? because it is a ridiculously delicate & demanding crop. complete primadonna.
vanilla beans come from vanilla orchids. these crazy flowers bloom for A SINGLE DAY and have to be HAND-POLLINATED in a process that is exhausting, delicate, and requires specialist knowledge passed down over generations.
then, if you're lucky, you get vanilla beans.
which then require months of further specialized treatment.
the entire process takes about a year and can go wrong at any stage
vanilla has been cultivated for over 800 years (possibly much longer). the first known cultivators are the Totonac, an indigenous people of Mexico.
the Aztecs used it as a sweetener to balance out the bitter taste of cocoa. it was popular in a drink called xocolatl--the precursor to modern hot chocolate!
it is only pollinated by a very specific orchid bee!!!
which is why no fruit could be grown outside of Mexico until the 1800s
Edmond Albius, born into slavery, invented the pollination method we still use today--launching a global industry when he was just 12 years old.
today, the majority of the world's vanilla is grown in Madagascar
if you want real vanilla, read the labels carefully--it's harder to find than you think!
in conclusion, those tiny black specks you see in fancy vanilla ice cream? those are vanilla bean seeds! itty bitty orchid seeds!!! they are delicious and also a PRISSY BITCH!
my take on saffron masala for @tulliok and @bixels grand galloping 20s au.
i'm south indian (so this may be inaccurate plz let me know if that's the case) but it can be assumed from the food that her resteraunt serves in the show that her family is northern so i tried to keep that in mind. i've always loved the name simran and it for her i think.
i wanted her to be trans because, like with many cultures honestly, trans women are so important in the history and culture of queer people in india. and i'm genderqueer and this au is really fun queer fantasy.
also while i was brainstorming her, i had a vision of her and moondancer as a couple so she's a lesbian :) (their ship name is moon masala. u know that's peak don't deny it)
the saffron-billed sparrow is a small member of the new world sparrow family found in argentina, bolivia, brazil, and paraguay. they live in tropical deciduous forests, and feed on fruits, seeds, and insects. the birds’ name comes from their distinct bright orange beaks. males have a distinct black head with a white supercilium and a soft yellow back; females look similar, but are duller in color.
🗣️lazzaaaa, your man is throwing your child into the ocean again!!!
(befores and afters of the first two pics under the cut bc i'm kinda proud)
let's not talk about how long i spent DRAWING water like ??? 1- i don't know how to draw, 2- how 3- i really don't care if it looks bad, the mxao line looked worse 😌
for this one i was big brain bc i just cropped the sea from another screenie and layered it twice on this one (and then made it look like waves, added shadows and lights and called it a day)
It's so students can enjoy it I guess I don't know.
Anyways, I'm celebrating with a coupon for my book. It just launched with a super fun reading and I'm still glowing about it.
Saffron and Honey - HSIKY? is a novel starring...
Ravi Beausoleil - a clinically doomed, bi-sapphic, masc, nonbinary chemical science postgrad with a grim, nihilistic vision for their future
Nicole Doyle - a couch-crashing, towering femme beauty and exiled faerie-in-disguise with a dark, dark history and a guilt complex the size of a mountain, who refuses to let Ravi wither away before their time
Felicity Vicente - a meddling, book-excavating archaeology postgrad and old unrequited highschool crush of Ravi's, who can't stand to let her toxically-beloved bestie be exploited by a mysteriously seemingly magical couch-crashing parasite

Saffron went to his new home today. He has a very important job. His new owner struggles with PTSD and has suffered a lot of tragedy recently. I think little Saffron is up to the task and hopefully he will be a great addition to their family he is incredibly docile and gentle.
