If it weren't for the objective superiority of the other episode, this one would be my Top 3. And let's be honest, is anyone surprised?
Genie Beanie needs more episodes like this one, where the writers take him more seriously. My baby is such a complex character as any of the other Belcher kids, but they insist on let him in the shadows as a merely comic relief.
Beyond the Gene element and him being a christmas bell, what make this episode one of my favorite is Gene having to face the fact that they destroy something that it was invaluable and irreplaceable, even if it was by accident, and the fact that no matter what he do he can not fix it.
(I have had to deal with this kind of situations so many times in my life, and I don’t deal well with it. And I'm a grown up!)
We see a Gene full of guilt, desperate and impotent. It broke my heart but is an approach on their character that I just would loved to see more. We usually see how Gene struggles with others rejecting them or underestimate them. Or (my favorite) Gene doubting themselves.
Everything escalate to a next level when his family, tryed to make her feel better, giving her a cover version of her record "Percy McTinsel-Bud's Tinsel Machine" sung by them. And Gene totally hate it.
Many other shows will write this as an ungrateful thing to do, like a bad thing Gene does, or would make Gene happy for the gesture like the love of her family fix everything, but Bob’s Burgers is not any other show.
Here Gene’s feelings are totally valid and understood. Gene herself feel awful about not loving what her family did for her. But loosing her album is not the problem, she is, the fact that she ruined everything as always.
But when she can finally forgive herself and understand that yeah something bad happened but is not the end of the world (love), she can appreciate what her family did for her, and can make it perfect with her genius-musician touch, cause maybe she can not fix the broken record but she can make that the songs in it are not forgiven.
Oh and the subplot with the adults playing Secret Santa, but especially Teddy and Mort's part DAAAMN I don’t ship them and I still live and dye for this one moment.
