I’m very glad I turned on email receipts for asks yesterday (I didn’t even realize it was off!), because tumblr ate this one from @toli-a!

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

Oh, this is a hard one, because I’m very bad at remembering when and how I learned information unless the circumstances in which I learned it were very memorable, and most of my fic research involves getting lost in a link chain rabbit hole for hours and coming back up like I’ve just woken from a fugue state. Actually, as I was writing this I was thinking about the justified og au and remembered one of the things I researched in depth for that: the details and dangers which “robbing a mine” entails, as well as some very specific instances where attempts to do so ended in disaster. A lot of mining companies would pay people under the table to do this for them, but of course some people did it for themselves because they could make more money per ounce on the coal than the mine was willing to pay them for it. Guess which of these equally illegal activities more often resulted in arrest? Yep; if you were doing this for yourself behind the company’s back, you weren’t just accused of robbing the mine, but also of robbing the mining company.

This is from a collection of prequel snippets in the heavy heart universe. It was never intended to be published and instead is really just for my own reference, so it’s rougher than I’d prefer:

"Arlo says the two'a you's queer for each other."

Boyd freezes, but Raylan just rolls his eyes. "Arlo says the mailman's queer because he—I’m quotin, here—‘spends all day shovin things in mail holes.' And when my mama told Arlo that's just his job, Arlo said that made it worse, on account'a he's gettin paid for it."

Johnny laughs. "Shit. Your old man may be an asshole, Raylan, but he's a funny one."

Raylan's said far worse about Arlo himself, but he feels his hackles rise anyway. "You oughtta watch what you say, Johnny."

Johnny lounges back on the dugout bench and looks at Raylan through hooded eyes. "Careful, Raylan. We ain't in high school anymore, when our families left us to it. Your affairs are your daddy's, now, and his affairs are yours, and he ain't exactly got his affairs in order."

Boyd, still lounging against the chain link, having since recovered from his earlier jolt of fear, smirks at him. "Maybe you're well-served to mold yourself blindly in your daddy's image, cousin, but if I am truly to become my daddy, I must first become my own man."

Johnny spits on the ground. "Long as your own man ain't a fag."

As dogs tend to do, the newest furry Compound resident makes everyone’s lives just a little bit brighter (unless one dares to wish harm upon Tony), up to and including throwing off the whole betting pool and accomplishing what the rest of the team had been unable to do in regards to the three pining idiots.

Summary: Peter Parker missed out on a lot in life while being raised in a Hydra facility. Tony has just introduced him to a cat for the first time, and Peter is determined to enjoy as much time as possible with her if there's a chance she won't be allowed to stay. Shenanigans & fluff.

Finding Liho (ao3) - WhoLetThisHappen wanda/natasha G, 6k

Summary: At first, Natasha assumed that Tony had finally started balding. Sure, the hair on the sofa didn’t quite match his shade, but with the sheer amount of gel the billionaire used on a daily basis, it was bound to happen at some point. Then, when the milk started to disappear faster than usual, she assumed that Clint was just back on his Lucky Charm’s kick. The scratch marks on her favorite chair? A little less explainable, but then again, they lived in a compound full of superheroes. A lot of things around here were weird.

“It’s begging for scraps. It’s a scam,” Bucky gripes.

Fixing Myself to Find You (ao3) - Bardic_Beauty, WitchyLurker steve/bucky G, 5k

Summary: Post-Endgame Steve Rogers discovers that his soulmark has some in. This would be amazing after waiting almost 100 years for them, except it came in when he was doing humanitarian work, so he has no idea who it is.

Bucky Barnes is a one-armed engineer who isn't sure what to do after the dusting of half the earth and the returning of them all. So he goes soul searching, but not soulmate searching after finding his mark lit up in his new temporary housing.

Will they find each other after therapy and soul-searching? Only time will tell.

Also, there's lots of cute animals.

Making Me A Habit (ao3) - Kangofu_CB clint/bucky T, 20k

Summary: Bucky is a disabled vet struggling with reintegrating into civilian life. He has a routine and a rhythm, and he doesn't like to let anything - big or small - disrupt it. That all changes the day Bucky finds himself inside CATastrophe, the local pet rescue, recovering from a panic attack in the back room of the shop.

He’s used to walking by the place, not visiting, but the next thing Bucky knows, he’s hanging signs and being used as a climbing tree for a bunch of freshly-acquired kittens. And he just...keeps going back. First for the kittens, then for the disaster shop owner who rescues actual kittens from actual trees and teaches archery as a side-gig, and eventually because he’s hopelessly in love.

(Clint was in love before Bucky ever walked in the door.

Even though she had his full attention, she hadn't stopped tap tap tapping on his upper arm with her whole hand, insistent as she marveled at the creature she couldn't seem to look away from.

He looked back and forth between Gamora and the animal she was staring at. Then he squinted at her. “You want one of those?”

Gamora nodded, turning to him expectantly. “Go get me that black one. We have a connection. It wants to come home with us.”

So, as far as things on AO3 goes, I have a Stucky rec list that I made years ago here. Fair warning, though, it hasn’t been updated since I made it XD That was an undertaking and a half, I nope’d out after it was complete

For specific authors...my favorites are togina & hitlikehammers, but afaik, they aren’t active in Stucky anymore.

I know for a fact togina now writes Old Guard fanfic, ‘cause I follow her XD (She’s @toli-a on here, if you’re curious.)

It was amazing what you could push through when the punishment for failure was so much worse. But he hadn't needed to do that for over a year now. He'd gotten used to not being in pain, remembered what it was like to be human. He knew no one would ever put him in the chair again. He knew he was safe here. He knew Tony could fix his arm without hurting him. Of course he did. But it didn't make a damn bit of difference to the terror that shook him like a dog at just the thought of sitting down and stretching his arm out for Tony to fuck with. Might as well stretch out his neck to have his throat slit. Hell, that'd be easier.

Fic Rec: Upon Love’s Road

So I read a lot of fanfic, like a lot, and an unfortunate side effect of that is that the stories can go in and out of my head pretty quickly. I’m trying to be better at saving quotes and writing mini-reviews on my faves. But almost never does a story hit me as hard as Upon Love’s Road by Togina/ @toli-a. It checks off all my boxes:

It’s long. 30K+ words. Long enough to really sink your teeth into. And it’s not an easy 30K words. No, it’s dense and packed with ideas that need to be pondered and cried over and cuddled and re-read. It’s written like poetry at times, written to puncture your heart with the sharpest needle at others. Which leads me to #2...

It’s angsty as fuck. Nicky’s gone on walkabout, leaving the rest of the team to figure out why. Except for Joe, who obviously knows why but hates it. The team’s already in shatters post-Merrick (and Booker’s back so it’s extra shattered) and they’ve still got to figure out the puzzle and then figure out how to solve it. And it’s messy as hell, with emotions just all over the place. Which makes #3 more amazing....

Perfect characterisations. I mean, to the point where I could see every action and hear every word spoken. Watching these older-than-dirt but thicker-than-mud immortals work through their emotions should not feel as naturally in character as every scene in this story does. Also, as an unrepentant Nicky lover, I hesitated to read this fic at first because I thought his absence would hurt the story. Nope. Perfect characterisation is perfect. He is present on every page, even if it’s just a Nicky-shaped hole.  

The Big Questions: It’s got them all. Faith. Purpose. Love. Family. Guilt. Memory. Amends. Choice and destiny. Redemption. Jambalaya. 

A well-deserved happy ending.

I swear this fic broke me, in all the best ways. In over 15 years in fandom, I can count on one hand how often I’ve been so touched by a story. I’m forcing myself to read other fic now and I’m trying to hold out until the weekend to re-read it. But if I’m being honest, I’ll probably just stay up all night...

Instead, he is warm, very much alive, and wrapped in a cocoon of feathers.

He’s also naked. And with a man lying right next to him.

23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.

Oh this is very difficult because I write fiction pretty much exclusively on my phone! I don’t require a consistent writing space, and pretty much the only constant between my many writing environments is a way to avoid or block out distracting sounds. I’ve written in my bed across 4 different houses and apartments, on couches in the same, on trains and buses and in the passenger- or backseats of cars; on porch swings, tree swings and fire escapes; even in hammocks in the woods. For me, being distracted by things around me is actually a pretty important part of my writing process—or maybe it’s more the ability to use those things to distract myself. I like to be surrounded by interesting things to focus on when my mind wanders or when I need to puzzle something out or take a little brain break.

Near where I grew up, there’s a little public park at the base of a dam. It’s not a park in the traditional sense; there’s no grass, and the area around the river is steeply inclined and thickly forested. Huge rocks jut up from the base of the falls, and continue down along the river, and in the summer when it’s dry, or when the dam hasn’t been running, the water collects in the deepest crevices and leaves most of the bedrock bare. Deep gouges scar the stone, vestiges of the dynamite boring holes they used to level the ground there and give the dam waters somewhere to fall. The river splits around several towering shelves of rock that stand much higher, and on one of those shelves lies a giant felled tree, a good six feet of trunk hanging out over the river, lifted some fifteen or twenty feet above the riverbed. I used to walk out onto the log and sit or lie at the end of it and write. I also liked to climb down and sit on the lower rocks close to the water. I’ve always been drawn to moving water, mostly for sensory reasons—the sound of it, the reflection and refraction of the sunlight as it tumbles over itself and the rocks and roots in its path. Anyway, that’s probably my favorite place I’ve gone to write.

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

Another hard one! Usually the reason I’m struck by lines in fics and novels and poems is inextricable from the context they’re written in, so isolating them from that context takes away some of their power in my mind. My brain is always trying to make connections—I dislike simplification. So if something specific strikes me in a piece of writing, it’s usually in a specific context or in connection to something else. I’m also not a very inventive or innovative person. Most of my creative output is more focused on synthesis and reframing. I guess what sticks with me more are conceptual threads shared across multiple perspectives, the little things that connect stories and memories and pieces of writing that maybe on the surface don’t seem to share much in common—and often these things end up threaded through my own writing.

One of my favorite poems is “The Hour and What Is Dead.” Here’s the first stanza: “Tonight my brother, in heavy boots, is walking / through bare rooms over my head, / opening and closing doors. / What could he be looking for in an empty house? / What could he possibly need there in heaven? / Does he remember his earth, his birthplace set to torches? / His love for me feels like spilled water / running back to its vessel.” In high school, we read Beloved by Toni Morrison, along with its companion essay, “The Site of Memory.” That essay contains the following quote: “You know, they straightened out the Mississippi River in places, to make room for houses and livable acreage. Occasionally the river floods these places. ‘Floods’ is the word they use, but in fact it is not flooding; it is remembering. Remembering where it used to be. All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was. Writers are like that: remembering where we were, that valley we ran through, what the banks were like, the light that was there and the route back to our original place. It is emotional memory—what the nerves and the skin remember as well as how it appeared.”

These two excerpts and the connection between them caught in my mind, and together led to this piece of narration from one of my current WIPs: “Raylan . . . scoots over. ‘Come on then, get up,’ he says, resigned, and reaches out to steady her as she climbs up on the bed. She scrambles in beside him, Boyd following after. Raylan loses his breath a little, winded, as she burrows her head under his ribs, the place she’s always trying to get to—like spilled water running back to its vessel, though it’s hardly where she came from. Boyd moves nearer, closing her in like a comma between parentheses. They sleep.” This paragraph in my fic is in conversation with both those other excerpts, and mirrors their themes of love/memory/familial relationships. My intention with the story as a whole is to explore inherited trauma, inter-generational relationships, systems and cycles of violence/crime/poverty/abuse, and the idea of Harlan living on in Raylan (and Boyd) and passing to his children through him—how it’s reflected in this child who had never stepped foot there in her life prior to the beginning of this story. It’s just one line, fleeting and fairly inconsequential, but I think something about it brings to mind these themes. Several people remarked on having enjoyed that line in particular, so at least there’s that.

So, whenever a line sticks with me, this is what my brain does with it. I know no one reading the story is going to make these connections, but they both fit in with the themes and ideas I’m constantly preoccupied by, and therefore constantly worrying at in my writing. And I do feel like it helps me to clarify those themes for myself and anchor them in the story, even if the references aren’t recognizable to readers.
