Godzilla in pop culture: Look at this funny dinosaur guy fight other dinosaur guys. He's so wacky!
Godzilla in the original film (and Shin Godzilla and Minus One): This beast represents our fears and damaged psyche caused by nuclear destruction. We must be staunchly anti-war or risk the annihilation of our species to petty grievances. We will never truly heal from the pain and suffering that occurred in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Godzilla in every other movie: Look at this funny dinosaur guy fight other dinosaur guys. He's so wacky!
I should mention that I legitimately love both styles of film, but the mood whiplash between them is pretty intense.

The fact that Godzilla's atomic breath actually scorches him in Godzilla Minus One is a fantastic little detail.
Remember when we all saw this clip and we thought "what the hell did that to him?"
But that was him! His wrath, his fury, his flames burned so hot that it boiled the water around him and burned his flesh away. His roar isn't merely one of absolute victory, but also of indescribable suffering. A hate so powerful that it burns the one holding it is an apt metaphor.
Imagine the kind of pain he must be in, and yet he continues to freely use this terrible weapon, like stabbing a knife into someone while holding the blade. It's as if he couldn't care less.
"I know I will heal." he's probably thinking, "But you won't."

Somehow, Godzilla Minus One does the impossible: it makes it personal. It makes the lizard, an amorphous metaphor throughout its years, the spectre not just of WWII, but of survivor guilt, of grief, of the ghosts of those lost coming back to say 'how dare you move on, how dare you live whilst we have perished.' Not only that, but it made me feel Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a way that, whilst spectacular, Oppenheimer failed to do. Such a fucking good movie.
