Intertidal Zone: Ahhhh, everything that can live where the tides change so drastically are so cool. Thriving when they're deep under the water or exposed to the air! Leaving behind little tide pools! And when you get to explore one it is so stunning to be walking on the ocean floor.

Deep Ocean: I specifically am thinking about ares surrounding hydrothermal vents. These places of extreme temperature that are incredibly hard to study. That is is so amazing that things can live there at all. Things living in high pressure and/or at extreme temperature. The extreme darkness. I mean, it's like space in the deep ocean. Drifting in space you're far less likely to see something strange and unknown that you are in the deep ocean.

Tundra: Lichens!!!!!!! Little shrubs! The distances with which you can see the land itself. The beautiful exposed rocks. Animals with big thick coats! I also just like the cold and the colours.

Lotic: Ahhhh, I love how varied these can be, and I love that these will shift their location over time. The way a river carves through the land and slowly shifts its own location over time. It's got places of slow moving water and fast moving water allowing for different conditions of life.

Wetlands: Birds!!!!!!!!!!!! So many cool birds!!!!!!!!! Birds and bugs!!!!!! So many things live in them! Also, they're very important with regards to erosion and preventing damage during storms. They do so much to keep the things past them *safe*

Killing Talon. I love why he did it (to save Cressida, of all people), how he did, and how different the framing is compared to other bat-canons lol.

top 5 romangerri moments 🫶

i am finally answering this almost one month late!!!! this is the kind of question that requires a lot of ruminating, okay. and oh, i have been ruminating!

this is more a scene than a moment, but! their whole slime puppy phone call scene. i think it's just magic. they're both chilling and having fun snarking at each other! the situation escalates in a way that clearly baffles and delights them both! and i find it really moving for roman how easy it is for him to interact with gerri and have an effortlessly sexy rapport with her, right in the wake of his failed call with tabitha that ended so miserably. not to mention that it's, to me, one of the only times we see gerri choose to do something on impulse for fun. (that's how i read her reaction, anyway, rather than something tactical. i honestly think she just had a shitty day at work and she and roman have been secretly vibing for awhile and that's hot and entertaining to her so she just leans in in the moment.) it's just so interesting to me that she makes that choice, especially knowing that this situation is going to become SO repressed and she's going to take a stance of such denial that it ever happened. they're both just really loose and free and fun with each other in this scene and i think it's a glimpse at what they would be like as a couple if they could ever actually just exist without everything keeping them apart.

gerri doing up roman's buttons in 2.03 -- specifically, if we want to pick a precise moment, when she looks up at him. it's the one moment of physical touch + realization of attraction that they ever get to share, and i think it believably lights the match for the fire that never goes out.

gerri watching roman at the funeral. just, like, getting to see her pain for him all over her face, and in maybe the most public setting we have ever seen them in. especially in the wake of everything that happened in the episodes before and how over their relationship felt. to get that proof of how deeply she still feels for him -- beautiful agony!!!

the moment where roman realizes that gerri isn't actually berating him but is engaging with him sexually in the "tern haven" scene. just, like, the face journey he goes on in that moment. jesus!!! again, i find it really poignant that in the wake of a failed sexual encounter with tabitha, gerri is just like right there totally understanding how to connect with him. they're in a dance now.

it's SO hard to definitively choose one last one when there's such a festival of riches, but i shall go with the "stone-cold killer bitch" / "who says you don't know how to flirt?" exchange, because it immediately set the tone of their dynamic. there's a little fun, a little dryly flirty energy going on there, and the visual of roman flopping awkwardly down on the couch next to her and then sitting lower than her -- it's all just so their vibe, baby. it really impresses me that that first interaction holds so much of what's to come re: their dynamic even though what's to come wasn't, at that point, planned at all. (presumably because j and kieran's chemistry and dynamic was already long-established due to their friendship and that informed the relationship a lot!) basically: meant 2 be!!!!

“top 5” 80s shows, top 5 characters and why

80s shows

1. The A-Team (1983-1987) This is the only show on this list that I've finished. It's horribly cheesy when it wants to be, and when you get a bad episode, it's a legitimately bad episode... but I'm weirdly fond of this series. The way the writers sort of drip-feed (?) you overarching storylines and character backgrounds is done in such a strange way that I'm not sure that original viewers would've gotten the same viewing experience as modern viewers who are able to binge the show. The Vietnam War veterans angle isn't something that starts to take proper shape until s2, but from s2 onwards, the episodes that allude to the characters' war experiences are done in good taste and I think make the characters feel more complex. Granted, there's no real payoff for these references, but there's also a sort of silent understanding among the main characters. They all worked together during the war, and they all understand that they don't need to talk about what happened. I think there is an argument to be made to the fact that even tho the characters left the war behind, the war is something that will continue to follow them for the rest of their lives.

2. Remington Steele (1982-1987) I haven't watched past s1 mostly bc I'm not ready for the show to abandon Murphy and Bernice and double-down on the Laura/Steele romance. I really like this show tho. Decent set up, decent episode plots, a good balance of humor and seriousness. For as much crap as I put Laura through on my blog, I seriously do really like her. She was apparently the first female private eye on television too ?? and this show became the blueprint for what would become Moonlighting. So that's cool!

3. Magnum P.I. (1980-1988) This show is at it's best with the Vietnam War-based episode plots. Apparently this was the first tv series to show Vietnam War veterans as protagonists in media; everything before this showed veterans as some trauma-possessed mass killers ?? which feels very '70s, honestly... While you sometimes have to power through half a season of cheesy monster-of-the-week-esque eps, it's worth it for the more serious performances. Tom Selleck was literally the perfect casting choice for Magnum.

4. Booker (1989-1990) Even tho I didn't finish s1, I liked this more than 21 Jump Street. While I like the og series, the concept becomes very wash and repeat after about 20 eps in when you consider the implications of how many high schools exist in the same city. The acting in Booker is a lot better, and it's an interesting setup for a private eye plot.

5. MacGyver (1985-1992) This is not my favorite 80s series by a longshot, but I watched the first 4 seasons and the tv movies, so I feel like I need to mention it. The pilot is the best episode, as weird as that sounds. MacGyver is known for things like being able to escape a locked room with a stick of gum and a lighter... but weirdly he only does that in the pilot ???? The series overall is... not good? *snorts* The plots are half-baked at best, the supporting cast makes you groan when they make appearances, and for some reason every single woman that MacGyver is friends with or in a relationship with, dies in some horribly tragic accident. While I would recommend this, dO NOT watch it expecting some cinematic masterpiece.

1. James Bond (from the book series, not the movies, tho Timothy Dalton is closest to book!Bond) Oh my beloved James Bond, always on the verge of turning in his resignation letter akjdnakjbfajbf. I've only read about half the books so far, but I've jumped all over in the timeline and Bond is honestly a very jaded character. He's the epitome of a workaholic, but at the same time he knows he's not happy. Every time he tries to make some sort of change in his life to seek happiness, all his plans blow up in his face and he's often left lonelier than he was before. It's very interesting to follow a character who sort of just lives in the present, bc he fully expects not to live past the age of 40.

2. Sonny Corleone from The Godfather Love me a slightly unhinged male character who supports women's rights. There's a whole thesis I could write about how Sonny and Michael are essentially foils in the plot. Their father assumes that Michael is the more "Americanized" of his children and they butt heads over that, which is so hysterical bc Michael ends up proving that he was the most traditional of them all; Sonny was the one who was the most "Americanized" despite being g.roomed to take over the business from his father. Hate what the sequel films did to his character and background, but alas, book!Sonny will always be my favorite.

3. Janis Ian from Mean Girls I like Janis for the simple reason that's she's petty. She sees through a lot of the bullshit, but she's also self-aware enough to know that she's not above bullshit of her own.

4. Fanny Price from Mansfield Park I like how she made up her mind and stuck to her decisions and didn't let herself be bullied into changing her mind.

5. Ed Chigliak from Northern Exposure I think his character is really well done, showing sort of a modern Alaskan indigenous experience through the eyes of a character who's half-Tlingit, half-White. He's a nice person and enjoys his hobbies and wants to tell stories. He's not bitter like other characters on this list; he's just happy to be here.

top five paintings all time

Happy Holiday by Agnes Martin: Honestly, I could just post five Agnes Martin paintings for this. I got to see a retrospective of her work a few years back at The Esker Foundation in Calgary and it took my breath away. I don't think photos do anything for her work. In person, her paintings make me feel like nothing else does. It's like the first breath of blistering cold dry air when you step outside on a clear day in Winter.

Park Place by Wayne Thiebaud: I love all of Wayne Thiebaud's landscapes, but especially his Californian landscapes where the roads jut straight up into the air. They're so flat but then evoke such a sense of scale. He's also an amazing food painter, though I'm less swept away by food paintings.

we have a pool next to our apartment, we swim every day by Aya Takano: this actually my desktop background, haha. Like the others, I like all of her work. I think she is one of the most interesting artists working in the Japanese Superflat movement. I like her colours, I like her shapes, I like her wiggly lines, I like her sense of space. It all just really sings in this painting.

Claude Cahun by Calude Cahun: I was waffling because you specified painting, and Cahun was a photo artist, but I don't have a top 5 photographers and it's still 2d art and this self portrait just in general is one of my favourite pieces of art. I love how Cahun played with gender and identity in their art! I love that they're an important artist in surrealism that isn't a part of the real boys club of that art movement. I love that they were a playful activist!!! I'm claiming photography as painting for them.

unknown title by A. Saryan? So this painting is not by like. A known artist. This painting was up in the living room of my friend’s mom’s roommate. It sat facing the couch directly and on the opposite wall there was a mirror facing it, so no matter where you were in the room you could always see it. This painting haunts me. I’ll never forget it. I wish I could make something as evil as this thing is.

the guys:

jason todd (all encompasing that he is) is obviously number one. please act shocked.

bruce wayne. he's a fucking menace. i can say that affectionately (i.e. gotham), derogatorily (i.e. gotham war), or simply flabbergasted-ly (i.e. gargoyle of gotham).

dick grayson. he's so me sometimes.

eddie bloomberg. I barely know him but the one issue I read about him from teen titans v3 HOOKED ME.

turner hayes (from gotham knights). I think they did something quite good with him there. unappreciated. a BLOND wayne son which already proves this bruce is a better father than most IMO.

hm: alan scott (another one I barely know but whose recent run caught my eye) and gotham knights!harvey dent (I think they went in an interesting direction with him... right before the show was cancelled lol. and I liked two-face in task force z as well).

1. Chairlift - Funny story, theres a lot of music that I’ve just refused to listen to again because it reminds me of a specific time in my life. One off-limits album that I used to love is Moth by Chairlift. I randomly discovered recently that I can listen to it again without it feeling tainted so that’s exactly what I’ve been doing! I’ve had that album on REPEAT!

2. flor - One of my favorite bands since high school. I adore the lead singer’s voice so so much. It’s just really lovely. Check them out!

3. TWICE - Yay! It’s Twice! I love them! Honestly it’s been a little while since a Korean Twice release has really clicked for me but With YOU-th really really clicks. So happy! (☆_☆)

4. Liang Lawrence - honestly I don’t know a thing about her but I found her on one of those “made for you” spotify playlists. Really like unposted letters, really like the pilot, feel positively but not strongly about the rest of her songs. She did get bumped up in my streams because I know that I fell asleep with her on loop once.

5. Caroline Polachek - The deluxe edition of her latest album came out this month! Or well the “Everasking Edition” whatever thats supposed to mean. Desire I Want To Turn Into You is really good and I was happy to revisit it! The added songs are really nice too. Listened to it quite a bit this month :)

1. Moth to the Flame by Chairlift - Ugh this song is just fantastic. Caroline Polachek’s voice is so hauntingly beautiful and she’s just doing her beautiful thing all over this dance-y beat. It just elevates what would already be a good song to a whole other level. That basically describes the whole album really.

2. Dangerous by TEN - AREN’T YOU A DIVA?! This is so good! Congrats to Mr. Ten on his solo debut. Absolutely infectious groove.

3. Show U Off by Chairlift - More from this same Chairlift album. Sooo good! This one is especially fun and funky.
