I was like, 'Fuck, this is fucked up!' So I think my whole life, I was very interested in the subjectivity of reality because it was always weird for me."

I so desperately need to see more folks write abt the inherent dynamic of how Cygate is like. a very much mutual, back-and-forth protective relationship. They protect /eachother/ and I think that thats such an important part of it all. Tailgate gets dumbed down a lot but he’s soooo far from stupid or plainly naive, his naivety comes from his optimistic attitude and lack of experience with more extreme situations. But he’s so fucking smart, and hes a stubborn lil’ shit, and he’s gathered every bit of how Cyclonus works and keeps it all in mind for whenever something happens and the guy /needs/ someone who /gets/ him to step in.

The “See, that wasn’t so difficult.” line speaks soooo many words. He’s so fucking patient man, if there’s one thing he has oodles of experience with it’s the passage of time having to be spent for a Good Outcome. That’s sorta what the whole arc of that development was about, showing what /he/ is willing to do. They are equal in what they give and take. They’re anchors for eachother and I NEED more of that it’s like my favorite thing to see in art and writing of them. They’re going to make me so ill i genuinely teared up writing this wtf

I saw your reply to someone asking about the writers were making political statements and the manosphere and incels and they kind of were but I think they chose the wrong character to me that has always been Luke with how he treated June and all women in general he's even like that in the book.

Yes, it’s honestly the worst. I’ve never understood why they wrote Luke like that. Why couldn’t he just be a decent guy? I always thought, okay, maybe they’re building contrast with Nick on purpose. Because Nick is respectful, honors emotional boundaries, understands what freedom means even in captivity. He always listens to her.

Then there’s Luke - the complete opposite. He gets a wife who’s nothing like the one he remembers, and he can’t deal with it. He tries to tame her like an animal, to train her. He tells her what not to do, to drop everything about Fred. He doesn’t let her process her emotions. He even goes to therapy with her to monitor what she says. He controls her. When she expresses anger, he tries to shut it down like he’s ashamed of her, even though her anger is completely valid. He compresses her like she’s in a psych ward, forcing her to behave the way he wants.

And I didn’t get it. But I had faith - I thought if they’re writing him this way, they must know it’s wrong. I even applauded them, thinking they were brave enough to show this kind of abuse - the dangerous kind that happens in families all the time. The kind where one person plays the angel, does everything “for” their partner, while making them feel like they’re never enough. That quiet abuse where the victim slowly dies inside, every day, because no matter what they do, they feel unworthy of love.

I thought it was genius, because this kind of dynamic is hard to recognize. He’d never hit her or yell - but he gaslights her. He says things like “stop loving that f***ing Nazi,” “you were pinning over him the whole time,” “what did you think, that you could trust him?” (Literally when he himself trusted him before). All those accusations when she’s already shattered. Everyone’s judging her, and the last person who should is her husband - the one who should protect her, give her space, be her safe place.

But turns out, the writers didn’t get the difference. And honestly, if they don’t understand these dynamics, they shouldn’t be writing this kind of show. Because what they’re saying to women is damaging. They ended up glorifying Luke - the emotional abuser - and demonizing Nick, the one man who gave her freedom. Nick never judged her, never controlled her, never asked for anything in return. He just stayed by her side.

With Nick, she could be anything - angry, broken, messy, soft. And he still loved her. With Luke, she had to be good. That’s not love. That’s a trap. And if the writers don’t see that - they really had no business telling this story.

It’s not just a creative misstep. It’s dangerous.
