Hope
Last night I was sobbing and listening to Fast Car by Tracy Chapman on repeat.  Worried that even with my two jobs we wouldn’t be able to pay rent.  My partner is different from the partner in the song, but he was still desperately job hunting for any kind of job every day.  But we went driving and talking with hope anyway about our future plans (furniture, having a kid, buying a home, etc.) with the underlying anxiety of our growing debts from the payday loans or my month off work as a teacher.  The fear was there but we found that “feeling I could be someone” when we drive through LA together.  I put on fast car and listened to it on repeat as I fell asleep.  It described how I was feeling
Today my partner got a phone call.  The union job he applied to hired him.  Not only does that mean he will bring money and benefits in - but his confidence is already back up.  Rent is still iffy, but we can take another loan if necessary since we now KNOW we can pay it back and I’m still trying to sell my motorcycle for cash too.  He will be doing a job that will help him travel to help workers around LA unionize their workplace which is also a very noble Talkin’ About a Revolution type job.
I spent months thinking my partner might kill himself from unemployment.  That I would have to follow him if he did because without him I didn’t want to go on to live a traumatizing life.  But we have hope.  It will still be hard to get out of the debt hole we dug these past months - but my fiance and I are gonna do it.  I’m glad that we made it work.  The two off us and our cats have a future now.  His mom will be able to retire one day since we will be able to support her better.  Things will be ok.

TRACY CHAPMAN | Fast Car (1988)
See, my old man's got a problem
He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

Tracy Chapman has herself said that she didn’t mind the remake because she is the sole writer of the song, and as such, she appreciates the royalties.
Luke’s version is getting a lot of airtime, but so is Tracy’s original version.

And Luke’s sincere and obvious appreciation of Chapman’s song is just icing on the cake:
When Luke Combs set out to cover Tracy Chapman's 1988 hit “Fast Car”, he did it out of complete admiration for the song
Although not every lyric makes sense being covered by a male vocalist, he decided not to deviate from the original lyrics out of respect for its original songwriter.
“You want to just be mega respectful of the original song,” Combs tells Kelleigh Bannen on Today's Country Radio. “That's why in that song ... it’s, ‘Work in the market as a checkout girl.’ I didn’t change that in my version — I really wanted to just do the original version of the song.”
Combs really wanted to bring the song as it was intended to be in presenting it to a new generation of fans who may have only been vaguely familiar with the original.
“It’s weird because you’re doing a cover of it, and you say, ‘I don’t want to make it my own, because I really just want to shine a light on the original version and bring that.’”
“Because I think there’s so many people that maybe know that song, or it would be familiar to them, but they really don’t know anything about it,” he explains. “They’ve never really listened to it.”
“When I recorded this, literally the engineer in there asked me who I wrote that song with,” Combs adds.
