Summary:

Charlie wanted Harry, but he’d never planned on having him. He’d never planned on Draco Malfoy, either. He hadn’t planned on anything but living out his days in Romania, with his friends and his dragons and his safe, peaceful distance. Apparently, it wasn’t a very popular plan. This is a story about crumbs and flickers and roots, running away and coming home; about falling in love without meaning to (twice), and having truly good friends, and the mutually revealing recognition between two people in love with the same man.

One thing you may or may not already know from my previous recs, I love, ADORE, a good poly fic and I have to say Licurici is at the very top of my list. I wasn't sure about this pairing at first, because I am a very hardcore Drarry shipper, yet this fic has demonstrated beutifully how freaking deliciously Charlie just makes sense in this dynamics. He is the calm they need, the experience, the wilderness, the absolute devotion and acceptance. He is somehow exactly what both Harry and Draco need and I just... *melting*

There are quite a few aspects that make this story exceptional, let me enlist just a few:

Charlie being an empath (!)

while Draco is an excellent Occlumens (the angst!!)

THE DRAGONS! I would die for Mathilde. I kept imagining her as Hiccups from "How to train your dragon" and I couldn’t help falling in love with her 🐉🖤

the fact that the Malfoy grounds are being repurposed for a dragon sanctuary – as in, a place of healing and safety and DRAGONS

Charlie coming home. Not a lot of works out there describe that and I absolutely loved this aspect of the story.

Last but not least, big shoutout to @phoenixortheflame who has done a stunning bind of this fic with @saijordison Challengers-inspired art on the cover no less <3

6. I am a complete sucker for situations where the third person is simply needed, like, logistically. So when Harry does his Auror stunts and Draco needs Charlie to take care of him or when Harry is in Mungo's and Draco needs Charlie there – I AM MELTED INTO THE GROUND.

7. Oh and the sex. I mean, phew, oh boy, these scenes were just SO HOT.

OKAY NOW MY FAV PART: Freaking Draco/Charlie dynamics.

I have a soft spot for the less obvious relationship in the triad, between „the others", so to say. Because Harry and Draco – that's just natural. Harry/Charlie – as we get Charlie's POV that’s also somehow... just makes sense. But Charlie and Draco – now, that's new.

At first, it seems that Harry – and their love for him – is the only thing they have in common (as beautifully illustrated in the Final Battle scene). But as the story progresses, we learn Draco's POV, we can see his "soft belly", we see Charlie falling for him and for Harry AND Draco's feelings. So once we are at this moment in the story, Harry basically just became a (cery pretty) ornament in this relationship for me 😅 And I LOVED how it was portrayed, how Charlie and Draco MAKE SO MUCH SENSE IF THEY JUST LET THEMSELVES TO.

Cress’ firstborn, Sorrel

I was talking with a friend on Discord about terrible prototype ideas I originally discarded for this AU, but because I have no self control (and she made a convincing argument), I modified the idea and am reimplementing it. As a warning, it involves the idea of Ghetsis having a child that’s within the age range of the other fankids, so that right there should tell you why I initially discarded this idea and why you should probably just skip this post altogether. But if you really want to know how far down the hole of ill-advised decisions for this verse I’ve fallen, feel free to read on!

So a very very early prototype idea I had for the Striation Trio once I decided to run with the idea they were the Shadow Triad was that for whichever brother ended up being the omega, they would end up pregnant with Ghetsis’ child. I’ll be straight up and admit I read a lot of fics during the early days of BW that featured creepy, manipulative Ghetsis who wasn’t opposed to taking advantage of others sexually.  As a result, a lot of my preferred characterizations of the BW cast come from those earlier headcanons, and it does color how I view Ghetsis. So while the conception of the child isn’t forced, it’s still largely coercive. Ghetsis essentially has been raising the Striaton Trio since they were about 8, and while he doesn’t take on the role of foster father with them, that’s still kind of what he is (just, you know, about as shitty of a father to them as he is to N, Concordia, and Anthea).  He still wants them to be ninja bodyguards/servants first and foremost, but once Cress is old enough to start his heat cycle, he’ll sometimes indulge. Ghetsis essentially grooms Cress to go along with it, plus all three brothers are loyal to a fault, willing to do almost anything for Ghetsis.  Despite the ongoing arrangement between Ghetsis and Cress, sex isn’t really the point of keeping Cress around. It’s generally occurring while one of them are in heat/rut or if Ghetsis feels like indulging. But Cress being part a ninja bodyguard is still his main duty.

Sorrel is conceived shortly after the final showdown with Ghetsis in BW, during the brief interval of time where the brothers rescue Ghetsis from captivity. It’s largely Cress getting pregnant that causes the brothers to give up their position as Gym Leaders, since they want to keep the pregnancy a secret. Their ability to easily disguise as each other comes in handy while this is going down.  To anyone that asks, they say they’re going to travel and focus on training, saying it’s because they felt so useless during the final showdown with Team Plasma. Ghetsis has up and disappeared at this point, but the brothers are still loyal to him and are biding their time until he returns.  Cress is in turmoil about what to do with his pregnancy.  Due to his feelings about his own parents, he doesn’t want to abort the child, but knows raising the child would also interfere with his duties as a member of the Shadow Triad.  Chili and Cilan are also torn about how to handle the situation, but promise Cress they’ll remain by his side in whatever decision he makes.

Since Cress can’t go to a regular hospital, the few medical checkups he does have are done with a doctor who works for Team Plasma. Even at this point, some members of Team Plasma remain.  Without a clear leader, tensions are rising about how to move forward concerning the group’s goals and loyalties. Concordia and Anthea are still with Team Plasma at this point and are aware of Cress’ situation as a result.  Near the end of his pregnancy, Ghetsis finally reestablishes contact with the remnants of Team Plasma with the intention of reforming the group and using them to take over Unova (the schism that leads to the two separate groups of Team Plasma forms at this time, but that’s not actually important for this explanation).   What is important is this is what makes the decision for Cress. Not only will he now not have the time to look after a child, since Ghetsis takes priority, but he also knows how Ghetsis treated his own son. Even if Ghetsis did let him raise the child without argument, there’s a good chance it would only be because he wanted to use the child as a tool.  And while he is willing to accept his fate as someone else’s tool, he doesn’t want that for his child. 

Cress is the one that approaches Anthea and Concordia about taking his child away with them (since the brothers can tell they’re going to jump ship with the portion of the group that don’t agree with Ghetsis). Concordia and Anthea agree, but also tell Cress they’ll only raise his child until Cress changes his mind and comes back for his child one day.  Cress tells him this isn’t going to happen, but they just smile knowingly at him.  When he actually gives birth to his son, he’s overwhelmed by how much he doesn’t want to give him up, but still forces himself to hand his son over.  Anthea and Concordia are the two who insist he names the child at least, and even though he planned to leave it on them, he relents and names the child Sorrel. Concordia and Anthea leave and the brothers don’t hear from them for a while (since the sisters are sort of in hiding and for them, helping Ghetsis reform Team Plasma keeps them busy for the next year). 

B2W2 happens and after Ghetsis eventually disappears again, the brothers are stuck with what to do. It’s at this point they receive a letter from Concordia and Anthea, which includes pictures of Sorrel as well as updates on how he’s doing.  Cress doesn’t handle this well, since it brings back all of his regrets about the entire situation, so when the brothers leave for Kalos, it’s without any of them visiting Concordia and Anthea to see Sorrel. The sisters still send updates to the brothers once they’re in Kalos, and while it tears Cress up, he does still cherish the little glimpses he gets of his son.  It’s after Cress gets pregnant with the triplets that it finally breaks his resolve and he reaches out to Concordia and Anthea, wanting to talk to them directly about Sorrel. They talk over Xtransceiver and the sisters encourage Cress to come back to Unova to meet his son face to face (and to consider bringing Cilan and Cress as well to meet their nephew). Cress puts off the idea, saying he doesn’t want to complicate his son’s life like that, but the idea still brews. Once the triplets are born and maternal instincts are running high, he caves and contacts Anthea and Concordia, telling them he’s changed his mind and does want to meet Sorrel. 

He flies back to Unova alone and things progress from there. After roughly a year and a half of slowly re-establishing contact with his son by flying out to visit him on occasion and frequently talking with him through Xtransceiver, he reaches an arrangement with Concordia and Anthea where they share custody (this more being for Sorrel’s sake since the Harmonias are the family he knows).  Since Concordia and Anthea had always planned on giving Cress back custody of Sorrel, he ends up spending more time in Kalos than Unova, but will fly back for substantial periods of time to visit Concordia and Anthea (and inevitable the N/Hilbert family since the sisters live with them on their Pokemon Sanctuary). It’s important to note that during all of this, Cress never told his baby daddies anything until he turns back up in Kalos with his long lost son. He makes some excuse about a messy situation with an ex making it so he had to give up custody, but things happened and “look, here’s my son, and if you have a problem with that then you can all leave.”

As a side note, what partially influenced this turn of events was I was looking up how adoption works and it turns out that, at least in most places in America, if a mother puts her child up for adoption but the father never actually signs away his parental rights, he can come back at any point and contest the adoption, possibly gaining sole custody of the child. I can see all parties involved wanting to avoid this possibility with Ghetsis, thus Sorrel would more be considered the foster child of Anthea and Concordia with Cress not actually having given up his parental rights as a failsafe (as such, his full name is Sorrel Pratt, not Sorrel Harmonia).
