15. (5 entirely self indulgent headcanons) ramble warning number 1 ‼️‼️‼️

1. THEY ALL WATCH STAR TREK this is technically historically accurate (although for the book, Dally and Johnny died before TOS officially started) but the rest of the book gang and the entire musical gang could have watched it. Johnny and Pony love that it shows a future of their world that's better than the one they're living it. Obviously the representation would be a huge thing for all them, and I think in an no-one-dies-everybody-lives-au Johnny seeing Pike be disabled like he is but still treated with complete and utter respect would be a big thing for him.

2. Transfem Two-Bit. Just the idea she thought she just liked girls like any boy but then the feeling never really went away and then got even worse when she started dating Marcia. And Marcia loves her anyways and forever.

3. I think my D/deaf AU counts as self-indulgent but it's cool as fuck and I want more people to get used to disabled people being in their lives and in their favourite medias and all that so I don't feel bad or guilty about it in the slightest.

4. Marcia and Two-Bit's sister being really close. I think they'd team up on him and have the time of their life.

5. Marcia and Two-Bit both dance ballet but Two-Bit can't afford classes & is self-taught, so when they start dating Marcia teaches him what she learns in her lessons and what she sees the boys being taught and they dance together all the time. Sometimes when both Cherry and Two-Bit are at Marcia's house with her Cherry will play the piano for them to dance to.

23. (Opinion on the musical?) ramble warning number 2 ‼️‼️‼️

I really like it! There's definitely some things they changed I kinda wished they wouldn't've, but for the most part I understand why they changed what they did, and the things I don't understand aren't big enough things to actually matter to the story at all (like changing Ponyboy's birthday by a month). Obviously the tech and design of it all are incredible. I'll often see theatre from a technical perspective before I'll see it from a performance perspective because I'm a technician, and seeing the show live was just so damn cool cuz not only did I know all the lyrics and lines, I knew all the lighting and sound cues and the fire and the rain and all that. It's just so damn well done.

I'm also a fan of several other shows that're adaptions of books (namely Les Mis, Phantom, and Jekyll & Hyde), and the Outsiders is the most faithful book to stage adaption I've ever seen (I'll forgive Les Mis for that because adapting all 1463 pages of Hugo's writing into a musical would result in the show being 74 hours. Phantom and Jekyll & Hyde don't have any excuses those books are short they did not need to fuck them up that badly HAHA). The fact they were able to change the story so it worked as a musical that's performed every night for an audience in 2024, and not 1967 or 1983, and still keep the integrity of the story, the plot, the message, and themes, and of most of the characters while elaborating on characters we don't know much about from the book? I don't think everyone gets how crazy impressive that is. There are very few adaptions (not just from books, but anything) that actually do that when turning something into a musical or play.

I definitely have some gripes and nit-picks here and there (which is a good thing!!! You gotta be able to dislike parts your favourite things its fun and good for the soul), but I think a lot of outsiders fans who don't know much about theatre, whether or not they like the musical or not, don't realize how well we were FED with this adaption. And yeah we lost some things but we got more & in-depth female characters, more characters of colour, and a really beautiful show that gives an important message to today's kids, which I think is more important than keeping it completely and utterly faithful (ESPECIALLY having characters of colour). I think people sometimes forget it's a show targeted for today's teenagers, and that's why it focuses more on trying to connect with all the kids in the audience while telling the story rather than being a 1-to-1 retelling of the 1960s version of it. I love never shutting up can you tell? But yeah, I just love it so much.

speaking of gender I think Henry Jekyll is one of those characters that can REALLY be read as transfem or transmasc depending on who’s looking because there’s just… something about using a hypermasculine persona to project your worst qualities and do whatever you like confident in that nobody would recognize you like that because you would never be like that, right?

putting all your skillpoints in one language is something i can relate tbh. i speak portuguese in my daily life but my own writing in it makes me cringe. the mere prospect of writing smut in portuguese makes me cry, and i love writing smut even when i'm not attracted to the characters involved, i just think it's fun.

anyways. i put everything i like into my jekyll. he has it all: mad scientist (obv), cult leader, religious imagery, mommy AND daddy issues, all my disorders, very queer (not like he'd admit to the later two tho), goth, lawful evil (lawful evil jekyll & chaotic neutral hyde is my favourite combination bc they're annoying in very different ways but equal amounts). my frankenstein is not much better, but she's more toned down (still a transfem girlfailure scientist with lichtenberg scars tho)(i went with female frankenstein because of tgs influence and couldn't let go of it after). griffin is there and he's jekylls ex bf/former academic rival/nuisance. sherlock and watson are minor characters and are bot beating the old married couple allegations. dorian gray is an annoying bitch who causes problems on purpose but his charisma stat is maxed so we can't complain. there's also a bunch of ocs, most of them inspired by characters from other adaptations (esp the musical (i don't fully disconsider traditional publishing so i divorced it from any media that wasn't public domain a while ago)) and a few others who are just blorbos from my brain that i try to fit into any project i'm hyperfixated at.

obligarory "sorry for infodumping on you but i'll do it more if you give me permission" line, and i'll be happy to listen (read actually, but semantics) if you want to yap back.

I have to admit when i was boyfailuring on writing bg3 fics i considered just turning to smut in the equivelent of giving up becoming a doctor and deciding to be a stripper. just "PLOTS AND GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS ARE HARD. i have a lot of opinions about that suzy izzard dr. jekyll project bc i think there is like. one perfect note it could hit where it would be a really insightful piece about queer feelings of monstrosity and like. so deeply internalizing cultural myths about oneself as predatory and immoral that you have to literally become someone else in order to express desire and vice.

but there are infinite ways it could go very bad very fast and even if it hit that perfect note you know many people would willfully misinterpret it bc a transfem person is involved so as a pessimist i’m like 😬

I've pondered some possibilities, but unfortunately nothing that quite forms a cohesive whole:

The repressed Dr. Jekyll (and to a lesser extent his friends) is a prime candidate for seduction by Count Dracula (but ??? how Hyde fits in...)

Victor Frankenstein could be a former student of Dr. Van Helsing, maybe he goes to his old teacher when everything goes awry, drawing the vampire hunting squad into it

Dorian Gray would make a pretty excellent vampire, though I'm not sure how that would tie into the portrait, but maybe it could lead to some kind of mystery about how/why he's changed?

Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll could bond over some mad science, maybe Frankenstein would be inspired to try to use Jekyll's serum to "fix" things making everything worse

Lord Henry is just the kind of person to inadvertently encourage Dr. Jekyll in all the wrong directions with his incoherent philosophizing

Basil Hayward, Dr. Seward, Victor Frankenstein, and Gabriel Utterson are all pretty awkward, I bet they'd get along well

I love the idea of a transfem Victor(ia) Frankenstein bonding with Mina and Lucy
