.r.ethink the path. . Here's something I learned today at #shalayoga after the #tapasya #vinyasa #hatha class when challenged by @kristincampbellyoga to take a familiar pose and deepen it. This is by no means a polished Asana... but that is not what life is about, is it? . To me life used to be about the perfect presentation of myself to the world.... .r.emember that sometimes pain = gain... but not always. . After spending time at @spottedmoosefarm getting ready for the growing season, then a hefty week of landscaping and training and finally helping to put up a kitchen nook roof with @dannydanger33 for @cofoodyvr ... and my body was telling/screaming at me saying I needed to release some tension.... . I, like many, ignored its quiet request cuz I was "busy" and "tired" and shortly thereafter my shoulder decided to speak up, and then my rib slipped. . Ow ow ow... . Shoulda seen it coming.... . Pecs tight, L. Hip tight, low back tight... and PING... excruciating pain, reduced mobility and function.... . So finally on Sunday eve I some Yin yoga with @jodee_hayes in squamish and then did a full 1 hour session of meditative breathwork along with using these crushing beauties and finally I can breathe, twist and use my arms overhead again. . Don't forget selfcare! .r.eturntoplay - pelvic instability is no joke. . In this short my lovely model demos a simple sit to stand from a 90° bend. . Just before her knee reaches 90° (the hardest point for this joint) you'll notice an inward wobble of the knee. . Pelvic and lower back injuries (especially those involving the nervous system and joint laxity from shearing forces) often result in instability when pressing through the legs. . By strengthening the "core", (see my previous video on core), stabilizing the hips and lower back, and enhancing balance through imbalance we can better her patellar tracking and decrease her overall pain and enhance her wellbeing. . If the client can visualize weight distribution into a "footprint in the sand", with a slight outward push to the knee we can better engage the side line. Training the ankle, feet and strengthening the arches helps our alignment. Also if we can fire up the transverse abdominus before she performs the action we can ensure that her pelvis is level before she attempts the lift. Lastly re-teaching the glutes to fire in sequence gives her more confidence moving through her hip joint and low back. . Injured? Want to know how to get better? No they're not truly synonymous but it is necessary to have something that slows you down, chills you out and relaxes your nervous system. . It is funny how such nuances in our language can be taken so differently depending on what camp you're in; the meatheads don't get the yogatards, the type A's don't vibe with what the zenners are doing... but in truth we all need a little of all worlds. . This week I needed to sleep for 15 hours one day and to drink wine with my parental units. I also in that same breath needed aome alone time in the studio to chill out and reconnect to my connective tissue and my feet. . .r.ethink "tone", and fat loss. . Did you know that hydration plays a large role in fat loss? . According to numerous comprehensive studies, More than 75% of us are dehydrated. This means we either a) do not drink enough water b) have an imbalance in our electrolyte or c) have too many things in our lifestyle that dehydrate us in relation to how much water we consume. (Coffee, alcohol, excess salts etc...) . In fat loss water plays a couple roles; . 1) Water makes up a very high % of our blood; therefore our hydration levels affects blood pressure as well as internal cell pressure or "turgor". Energy (or ATP) is produced inside the cell by mitochondria, but in order to exit the cell and be metabolized it needs to pass through the cell membrane first. A cell with low turgor has a skin like a raisin (thick and has a lower surface area), a well hydrated cell is more like a grape and ATP easily pases through it. This simple change makes it easier for the body to metabolize the energy you've produced. . 2) When dehydrated, the body holds on to fluids, and often does so subdermally (under the skin), this can lead to feeling bloated and looking like you are less toned than you are. . 3) as in 1) an increase in your blood pressure can bring about lethargy (laziness) and decreases your desire to move and exercise.
